BACKGROUND: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has made tobacco use prevention a primary health issue. All ASEAN countries except Indonesia have ratified the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), the world's first public health treaty on tobacco control. METHODS: Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data were collected from representative samples of students in school grades associated with ages 13-15 in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Vientiane), Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam (Hanoi). RESULTS: Current cigarette smoking ranged from less than 5% (Vietnam and Cambodia) to 20.2% in Malaysia. Current use of tobacco products other than cigarettes was less than 10% in all countries. Boys were significantly more likely than girls to smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products. Exposure to second-hand smoke in public places was greater than 50%, direct pro-tobacco advertising exposure was greater than 75% and over 10% of students were exposed to indirect advertising. Over 60% of students who currently smoked cigarettes wanted to stop, but 80% who tried to quit in the year prior to the survey failed. CONCLUSIONS: Efforts to reduce the current and projected harm caused by tobacco use in the ASEAN countries are urgently needed. ASEAN countries need to expand their national comprehensive tobacco prevention and control programs and enforce those laws already passed. In Vietnam, the stems and roots of the Rutaceous plant Paramignya trimera (Oliv.) Burkill (known locally as "Xáo tam phân") are widely used to treat liver diseases such as viral hepatitis and acute and chronic cirrhosis. In an effort to search for Vietnamese natural compounds capable of inhibiting coronavirus based on molecular docking screening, two new dimeric coumarin glycosides, namely cis-paratrimerin B (1) and cis-paratrimerin A (2), and two previously identified coumarins, the trans-isomers paratrimerin B (3) and paratrimerin A (4), were isolated from the roots of P. trimera and tested for their anti-angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) inhibitory properties in vitro. It was discovered that ACE-2 enzyme was inhibited by cis-paratrimerin B (1), cis-paratrimerin A (2), and trans-paratrimerin B (3), with IC 50 values of 28.9, 68, and 77 µM, respectively. Docking simulations revealed that four biscoumarin glycosides had good binding energies (∆G values ranging from -10.6 to -14.7 kcal/mol) and mostly bound to the S1' subsite of the ACE-2 protein. The key interactions of these natural ligands include metal chelation with zinc ions and multiple H-bonds with Ser128, Glu145, His345, Lys363, Thr371, Glu406, and Tyr803. Our findings demonstrated that biscoumarin glycosides from P. trimera roots occur naturally in both cis- and trans-diastereomeric forms. The biscoumarin glycosides Lys363, Thr371, Glu406, and Tyr803. Our findings demonstrated that biscoumarin glycosides from P. trimera roots hold potential for further studies as natural ACE-2 inhibitors for preventing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection.

Background: Secondhand smoke (SHS) has detrimental effects on community health, including coronary heart diseases, stroke, lung cancer etc. This manuscript exploited data from the Vietnam Population-based Provincial Global Adult Tobacco Survey (PGATS) in 2022 to update the prevalence of adult exposure to SHS and associated socio-demographic factors. Methods: With the sample size of 71,981 adults aged 15+ throughout 30 provinces and cities in Vietnam, data was collected using the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) questionnaire. Bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression modelling were performed. Results: In the past 30 days, 44.4% (95% CI: 44.0%-44.9%) adults aged 15+ exposed to SHS at home while 23.1% (95% CI: 22.6%-23.6%) exposed to SHS at work. Female exposure to SHS in the past 30 days was higher at homes but lower at indoor workplaces. Participants aged 15-24 were likely to have higher odds of SHS exposure in the past 30 days to other age groups. Those living in the urban areas had 1.15 times higher odds (95% CI: 1.08-1.22) of exposure to SHS than those in the rural areas. Current smokers tended to have 2.2 times higher odds of exposure to SHS at the indoor workplaces compared to non-smokers (95% CI: 2.05-2.37). Conclusions: The prevalence of exposure to SHS at home was still relatively high amongst the adult population. While there was a significant reduction of SHS exposure at indoor workplaces, there was a higher prevalence of women being exposed to SHS at home. Herein, we report the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel (E)-3-(3-oxo-4-substituted-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[b][1,4]oxazin-6-yl)-N-hydroxypropenamides (4 a-i, 7 a-g) targeting histone deacetylases. Three human cancer cell lines were used to test the cytotoxicity of the synthesized compounds (SW620, colon; PC-3, prostate; NCI-H23, lung cancer); inhibitory activity towards HDAC; anticancer activity; as well as their impact on the cell cycle and apoptosis. As a result, compounds 4 a-i bearing the alkyl substituents seemed to be less potent than the benzyl-containing compounds 7 a-g in all biological assays. Compounds 7 e-f were found to be the most active HDAC inhibitors with IC 50 of 1.498±0.020 μM and 1.794±0.159 μM, respectively. In terms of cytotoxicity and anticancer assay, 7 e and 7 f also showed good activity with IC 50 values in the micromolar range. In addition, the cell cycle and apoptosis of SW620 were affected by compound 7 f in almost a similar manner to that of reference compound SAHA. Docking assays were carried out for analysis the binding mode and selectivity of this compound toward 8 HDAC isoforms. Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common disease in men over 65 years of age, and should be detected early, while reducing unnecessary biopsies. This study aims to construct a classification and regression tree (CART) model (i.e., risk stratification algorithm) using multivariable approach to select Vietnamese men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) for PCa biopsy., Methods: We conducted a case-control study on 260 men aged ≥ 50 years who visited MEDIC Medical Center, Vietnam in 2017-2018 with self-reported LUTS. The case group included patients with a positive biopsy and the control group included patients with a negative biopsy diagnosis of PCa. Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) was used for selecting the most parsimonious prediction model. Then the CART with 5-fold cross-validation was constructed for selecting men who can benefit from PCa biopsy in steps by steps and intuitive way., Results: BMA suggested five potential prediction models, in which the most parsimonious model including PSA, I-PSS, and age. CART advised the following cut-off points in the marked screening sequence: 18 < PSA < 33.5 ng/mL, I-PSS ≥ 19, and age ≥ 71. Patients with PSA ≥ 33.5 ng/mL have a PCa risk was 91.2%; patients with PSA < 18 ng/mL and I-PSS < 19 have a PCa risk was 7.1%. Patient with 18 ≤ PSA < 33.5ng/mL and I-PSS < 19 have a PCa risk is 70% if age ≥ 71; and is 16% if age < 71. In overall, CART reached high predictive value with AUC = 0.915. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of CART at the 20% diagnosis probability threshold were 91.5%, 86.2%, 86.9%, 91.2%, and 88.9% respectively; at 80% diagnosis probability threshold were 79.2%, 92.3%, 91.2%, 81.6%, and 85.8% respectively., Conclusion: CART combining PSA, I-PSS, and age has practical use in hospital-based PCa screening in Vietnamese men with lower urinary tract symptoms., (© 2022. Electronic cigarette use among adolescents has increased in the past decade. Little is known about the perception and use of e-cigarettes in Vietnam, especially among young people. This study examines the perceptions and use of electronic cigarettes among young adults in Vietnam. The study uses data from a survey of adult tobacco consumption among adults at the provincial level in 2020, which was funded and managed by the Vietnam Tobacco Control Fund-Ministry of Health. Data were collected from 34 provinces and cities throughout Vietnam and managed using REDCap software. The survey engaged 80,166 participants, of which 9478 were young adults aged 15-24 were selected and reported in this paper. The results show that, at the time of the survey, 2.4% of young Vietnamese adults were smoking e-cigarettes. Many survey participants cited more than one reason for smoking e-cigarettes. These reasons included preferring the taste of e-cigarettes (64.0%), disliking the odour of other cigarettes (46.2%), following the example of family members (44.9%), and believing e-cigarettes threatened fewer health risks (39.1%). Almost half of the e-cigarette users wanted to quit (48%). E-cigarette use was associated with males living in urban areas who are aware of the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms. The detection of volatile organic compounds by gas sensors is of great interest for environmental quality monitoring and the early-stage and noninvasive diagnosis of diseases. Experiments found hexane, toluene, aniline, butanone, acetone, and propanol gases in the exhaled breath of patients suffering from COVID-19, lung cancer, and diabetes. However, no studies are available to systematically elucidate the selectivity of these gases on nanosheets of zinc oxide for chemiresistive and direct thermoelectric gas sensors. Therefore, this work performed the elucidation by studying the electronic, electrical, and thermal properties of the bilayered ZnO nanosheets with polar (0001) and non-polar (112̄0) surfaces under the adsorption of the gases. The interaction between the gases and the nanosheets belongs to two groups: electrostatic attraction and charge exchange. The second one occurs due to the peak resonance of the same type of orbitals between the substrates and the gases along the surface normal and the first one for the other cases. The characteristics of the Seebeck coefficient exhibited distinct selectivity of butanone and acetone.

Researchers investigated the modification of the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface with Au overlayers and nanoparticles, which led to the change of various physical properties. However, no research is available to elucidate insights into the interaction of Au with the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 substrate. Therefore, this study is devoted to solving the question using density functional theory calculations. We also studied the optical properties of the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 system before and after the Au adsorption. We found that an additional optical peak occurs with significant intensity in the wavelength region of 600 nm to 1200 nm depending on the LaAlO 3 film thickness. Background: To our knowledge, this study is the first report on the seroprevalence of human leptospirosis and its epidemiological profile in 3 different geographical and climatic zones of Vietnam., Methodology: A hospital-based surveillance in 11 public hospitals in 3 provinces in Vietnam enrolled 3,815 patients with suspected leptospirosis. Two consecutive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay IgM and a single microscopic aggregation test were applied at a 1:100 to 1:800 dilution for probable or confirmed cases., Results: The findings showed that of the 3,815 suspected cases, 68 (1.8%) were Leptospira-confirmed and 248 (6.5%) probable cases, whereas more than a third were positive for acute ELISA-IgM sera. Furthermore, 20 different serovars were found, of which Wolffi (14.2%), Hebdomadis (13.8%), and Icterohaemorrhagiae (12.6%) were the most predominant. The ratio of probable and confirmed cases of leptospirosis between females and males was 1.4:1, and their clinical manifestation was not specific. Cases were more likely to be detected in groups that are farmers, pet raising or livestock farming, of working age, practicing either wading in mud or walking barefoot, or exposed to heavy rainfall., Conclusions: Analysis of human leptospirosis has indicated fairly high seroprevalence and diversity of Leptospira serovars circulating in all studied geographical zones in Vietnam. Introduction: Leptospirosis is a neglected disease in Vietnam. Until now, there has been limited knowledge about risk factors of this disease in Vietnam. The study was carried out to identify agricultural and behavioral factors associated with the transmission of leptospirosis in Vietnam., Methods: This matched retrospective hospital-community-based case-control study was conducted from 1 October 2018 to 31 October 2019. We recruited cases from 11 selected government hospitals in three provinces of Vietnam, while controls were selected from the same communes of cases and matched by age (± 2 years) and sex. Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were applied to determine confirmed cases, while only MAT was used to identify controls with a single high MAT titer < 1:100., Results: 504 participants (252 cases and 252 controls) were identified. Cultivating (OR 2.83, CI 1.38-5.79), animal farming (OR 8.26, CI 2.24-30.52), pig owners (OR 10.48, CI 5.05-21.73), cat owners (OR 2.62, CI 1.49-4.61) and drinking unboiled water (OR 1.72, CI 1.14 -2.59, p = 0.010) were significantly associated with human leptospirosis in Vietnam. Hand washing after farming/ gardening (OR 0.57, CI 0.38-0.86, p = 0.007) and bathing after farming, gardening, contact with cattle and poultry (OR 0.33, CI 0.19-0.58, p = 0.000) were determined as protective factors for this disease., Conclusions: In short, the case-control study has revealed the risks in agricultural and animal practices and protective behavioral factors related to human leptospirosis in Vietnam. The findings suggested promotion of communication and health education programs targeting health behaviors in daily life and agricultural practices. Background: Smoking leads to many smoking-attributable diseases. The promotion of quitting tobacco smoking is urgent as it has significant and immediate health benefits and improves the impacts of other tobacco control strategies. Intention to quit smoking is considered the first step before quitting smoking., Methodology: This paper used data from Vietnam provincial GATS 2020 on 80,166 participants who were 15-year-old or older. Data were collected from 34 provinces and cities throughout Vietnam and managed using REDCap., Results: Among those who were current smokers, 50.3% (95% CI: 49.1%-51.4%) had the intention to quit smoking. Some predictive factors found to be positively associated with the intention to quit smoking were age (from 45-64), education level, received information about harmful effects or encouragement to quit smoking from media channels (from 6 channels), hearing about the Tobacco Control Law and noticing health warnings on the cigarette package. There was no significant difference in intention to quit smoking between current smokers from urban and rural areas or among different age groups to start smoking., Conclusions: Interventions or health promotion programs on smoking cessation should be focused on current smokers who have low education levels as they have a higher smoking rate and are less motivated to stop smoking. Received information about harmful effects or encouragement to quit smoking from media channels is also associated with stopping smoking in the future. In our continuing search for novel small-molecule anticancer agents, we designed and synthesized a series of novel (E)-N'-(3-allyl-2-hydroxy)benzylidene-2-(4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)acetohydrazides (5), focusing on the modification of substitution in the quinazolin-4(3H)-one moiety. The biological evaluation showed that all 13 designed and synthesized compounds displayed significant cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon cancer; PC-3, prostate cancer; NCI-H23, lung cancer). The most potent compound 5l displayed cytotoxicity up to 213-fold more potent than 5-fluorouracil and 87-fold more potent than PAC-1, the first procaspase-activating compound. Structure-activity relationship analysis revealed that substitution of either electron-withdrawing or electron-releasing groups at positions 6 or 7 on the quinazolin-4(3H)-4-one moiety increased the cytotoxicity of the compounds, but substitution at position 6 seemed to be more favorable. In the caspase activation assay, compound 5l was found to activate the caspase activity by 291% in comparison to PAC-1, which was used as a control. Further docking simulation also revealed that this compound may be a potent allosteric inhibitor of procaspase-3 through chelation of the inhibitory zinc ion. Physicochemical and ADMET calculations for 5l provided useful information of its suitable absorption profile and some toxicological effects that need further optimization to be developed as a promising anticancer agent., (© 2021 Deutsche Pharmazeutische Gesellschaft.)

Background: Herein, we have designed and synthesized a series of the novel (E)-N'-((1-(4-chlorobenzyl)- 1H-indol-3-yl)methylene)-2-(4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)acetohydrazides (5) as potent small molecules activating procaspase- 3. The compounds were designed by the amalgamation of structural features of PAC-1 (the first procaspase-3 activator) and oncrasin-1, one potential anticancer agent., Methods: The target acetohydrazides (5a-m) were prepared via the Niementowski condensation of anthranilic acid (1a) or 5-substituted-2-aminobenzoic acid (1b-m) and formamide. The compound libraries were evaluated for their cytotoxicity, caspase-3 activation, cell cycle analysis, and apoptosis. In addition, computational chemistry is also performed., Results: A biological evaluation revealed that all thirteen compounds designed and synthesized showed strong cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon cancer; PC-3, prostate cancer; NCI-H23, lung cancer) with eight compounds (5a, 5c-i, 5k), which were clearly more potent than both PAC-1 and oncrasin-1. In this series, four compounds, including 5c, 5e, 5f, and 5h, were the most potent members with approximately 4- to 5-fold stronger than the reference compounds PAC-1 and oncrasin-1 in terms of IC50. In comparison to 5-FU, these compounds were even 18- to 29-fold more potent in terms of cytotoxicity in three human cell lines tested. In the caspase activation assay, the caspase activity was activated to 285% by compound 5e compared to PAC-1, the first procaspase activating compound, which was used as a control. Our docking simulation revealed that compound 5e was a potent allosteric inhibitor of procaspase-3 through chelation of inhibitory zinc ion. Two series of novel 4-oxoquinazoline-based N -hydroxypropenamides ( 9a - m and 10a - m ) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their inhibitory and cytotoxicity activities against histone deacetylase (HDAC). The compounds showed good to potent HDAC inhibitory activity and cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon; PC-3, prostate; NCI-H23, lung cancer). In this series, compounds with the N -hydroxypropenamide functionality impeded at position 7 on the 4-oxoquinazoline skeleton ( 10a - m ) were generally more potent than compounds with the N -hydroxypropenamide moiety at position 6 ( 9a - m ). Also, the N 3 -benzyl-substituted derivatives ( 9h - m , 10h - m ) exhibited stronger bioactivity than the N 3 -alkyl-substituted ones ( 9a - e , 10a - e ). Two compounds 10l and 10m were the most potent ones. Their HDAC inhibitory activity (IC 50 values, 0.041-0.044 μM) and cytotoxicity (IC 50 values, 0.671-1.211 μM) were approximately 2- to 3-fold more potent than suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA). Some compounds showed up to 10-fold more potent HDAC6 inhibition compared to their inhibitory activity in total HDAC extract assay. Analysis of selected compounds 10l and 10m revealed that these compounds strongly induced both early and late apoptosis and arrested SW620 cells at the G2/M phase. Background: The target-based approach to drug discovery currently attracts a great deal of interest from medicinal chemists in anticancer drug discovery and development. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors represent an extensive class of targeted anti-cancer agents. Among the most explored structure moieties, hydroxybenzamides and hydroxypropenamides have been demonstrated to have potential HDAC inhibitory effects. Several compounds of these structural classes have been approved for clinical uses to treat different types of cancer, such as vorinostat and belinostat., Aims: This study aims at developing novel HDAC inhibitors bearing conjugated quinazolinone scaffolds with potential cytotoxicity against different cancer cell lines., Methods: A series of novel N-hydroxyheptanamides incorporating conjugated 6-hydroxy-2 methylquinazolin- 4(3H)-ones (15a-l) was designed, synthesized and evaluated for HDAC inhibitory potency as well as cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines, including HepG-2, MCF-7 and SKLu-1. Molecular simulations were finally performed to gain more insight into the structureactivity relationships., Results: It was found that among novel conjugated quinazolinone-based hydroxamic acids synthesized, compounds 15a, 15c and 15f were the most potent, both in terms of HDAC inhibition and cytotoxicity. Especially, compound 15f displayed up to nearly 4-fold more potent than SAHA (vorinostat) in terms of cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cell line with IC 50 value of 1.86 μM, and HDAC inhibition with IC 50 value of 6.36 μM. Docking experiments on HDAC2 isozyme showed that these compounds bound to HDAC2 with binding affinities ranging from -10.08 to -14.93 kcal/mol compared to SAHA (-15.84 kcal/mol). In continuity of our search for novel anticancer agents acting as procaspase activators, we have designed and synthesised two series of ( E )- N ' - benzylidene-carbohydrazides ( 4a-m ) and (Z)-N' -(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)carbohydrazides ( 5a-g ) incorporating 1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1 H -indole core. Bioevaluation showed that the compounds, especially compounds in series 4a-m , exhibited potent cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon cancer; PC-3, prostate cancer; NCI-H23, lung cancer). Within series 4a-m , compounds with 2-OH substituent ( 4g-i ) exhibited very strong cytotoxicity in three human cancer cell lines assayed with IC 50 values in the range of 0.56-0.83 µM. In particular, two compounds 4d and 4f bearing 4-Cl and 4-NO 2 substituents, respectively, were the most potent in term of cytotoxicity with IC 50 values of 0.011-0.001 µM. In caspase activation assay, compounds 4b and 4f were found to activate caspase activity by 314.3 and 270.7% relative to PAC-1. This investigation has demonstrated the potential of these simple acetohydrazides, especially compounds 4b , 4d , and 4f , as anticancer agents.

Several novel indirubin-based N-hydroxybenzamides, N-hydropropenamides and N-hydroxyheptanamides (4a-h, 7a-h, 10a-h) were designed using a fragment-based approach with structural features extracted from several previously reported HDAC inhibitors, such as SAHA (vorinostat), MGCD0103 (mocetinostat), nexturastat A and PXD-101 (belinostat). The biological results reveal that our compounds showed excellent cytotoxicity toward three common human cancer cell lines (SW620, PC-3 and NCI-H23) with IC 50 values ranging from 0.09 to 0.007 µM. The cytotoxicity of the compounds was equipotent or even up to 10-times more potent than adriamycin and up to 205-times more potent than SAHA. Among the series of N-hydroxypropenamides, compounds 10a-d were the most potent HDAC inhibitors as well as cytotoxicity toward the cell lines tested. In addition, the strong inhibitory activites toward HDAC of our compounds were observed with IC 50 values of below-micromolar range. Especially, compound 4a inhibited HDAC6 with an IC 50 value of 29-fold lower than that against HDAC2 isoform. Representative compounds 4a and 7a were found to significantly arrest SW620 cells at G0/G1 phase. Compounds 7a and 10a were found to strongly induce apoptosis in SW620 cells. Docking studies revealed some important features affecting the selectivity against HDAC6 isoform. Several novel series of hydroxamic acids bearing 2-benzamidooxazole/thiazole (5a-g, 6a-g) or 2-phenylsulfonamidothiazole (8a-c) were designed and synthesized. The compounds were obtained straightforwards via a two step pathway, starting from commercially available ethyl 2-aminooxazole-4-carboxylate or ethyl 2-aminothiazole-4-carboxylate. Biological evaluation showed that these hydroxamic acids generally exhibited good cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon; PC-3, prostate; NCI-H23, lung cancer), with IC 50 values in low micromolar range and comparable to that of SAHA. These compounds also comparably inhibited HDACs with IC 50 values in sub-micromolar range (0.010-0.131 µM) and some compounds (e.g 5f, IC 50 , 0.010 µM) were even more potent than SAHA (IC 50 , 0.025 µM) in HDAC inhibition. Representative compounds 6a and 8a appeared to arrest the SW620 cell cycle at G2 phase and significantly induced both early and late apoptosis of SW620 colon cancer cells. Docking experiments on HDAC2 and HDAC6 isozymes revealed favorable interactions at the tunnel of the HDAC active site which positively contributed to the inhibitory activity of synthesized compound. The binding affinity predicted by docking program showed good correlation with the experimental IC 50 values. Objectives: This paper explores changes in the level of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure at indoor workplaces between 2010 and 2015 in Viet Nam and the association between the exposure and various demographic factors, using data from Viet Nam's Global Adult Tobacco Surveys (GATS) 2010 and 2015., Methods: Data was pooled from the two GATS surveys and analysed using descriptive and Poisson regression analyses., Results: There was a highly statistically significant reduction in the level of SHS exposure at indoor workplaces from 55.9% to 42.6% (p.

Semaphorins were discovered as guidance signals that mediate neural development. Recent studies suggest that semaphorin 3A (Sema3A), a member of the semaphorin family, is involved in the development of several cancers. This study aimed to analyze the association of Sema3A with the clinical features of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), an Epstein-Barr virus-associated carcinoma, and the Epstein-Barr virus primary oncogene latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1). The expression of Sema3A and LMP1 was immunohistochemically examined in the 35 NPC specimens. The mean expression scores for Sema3A and LMP1 were 20.8% ± 14.5% and 13.9% ± 14.8%, respectively. The expression of Sema3A significantly correlated with that of LMP1 (r = 0.41, p = 0.014). In addition, the Sema3A high cohort showed significantly poorer prognosis than the Sema3A low cohort. Sema3A expression was higher in the LMP1-positive KH-1 and KR-4 cell lines compared to the LMP1-negative HeLa cells. Overexpression of LMP1 in the LMP1-negative AdAH cell line upregulated Sema3A expression, both at the transcriptional and translational level. Finally, Sema3A expression was associated with poor prognosis in patients with NPC. Our data suggest that LMP1 induces the expression of Sema3A, which may promote tumor progression in NPC.

In our search for new small molecules activating procaspase-3, we have designed and synthesized a series of new acetohydrazides incorporating both 2-oxoindoline and 4-oxoquinazoline scaffolds. Biological evaluation showed that a number of these acetohydrazides were comparably or even more cytotoxic against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon cancer; PC-3, prostate cancer; NCI-H23, lung cancer) in comparison to PAC-1, a first procaspase-3 activating compound, which was used as a positive control. One of those new compounds, 2-(6-chloro-4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)-N'-[(3Z)-5-methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-3H-indol-3-ylidene]acetohydrazide activated the caspase-3 activity in U937 human lymphoma cells by 5-fold higher than the untreated control. In search for novel small molecules with antitumor cytotoxicity via activating procaspase-3, we have designed and synthesized three series of novel (E)-N'-benzylidene-4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)acetohydrazides (5a-j, 6a-h, and 7a-h). On the phenyl ring ò the benzylidene part, three different substituents, including 2-OH-4-OCH 3 , 4-OCH 3 , and 4-N(CH 3 ) 2 , were introduced, respectively. Biological evaluation showed that the acetohydrazides in series 5a-j, in which the phenyl ring of the benzylidene part was substituted by 2-OH-4-OCH 3 substituent, exhibited potent cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon; PC-3, prostate; NCI-H23, lung). Most of the compounds, in this series, especially compounds 5c, 5b and 5h, also significantly activated caspase-3 activity. Among these, compound 5c displayed 1.61-fold more potent than PAC-1 as caspase-3 activator. Cell cycle analysis showed that compounds 5b, 5c, and 5h significantly arrested the cell cycle in G1 phase. Further apoptotic studies also demonstrated compounds 5b, 5c, and 5h as strong apoptotic cell death inducers. The present article describes the synthesis and biological activity of various series of novel hydroxamic acids incorporating quinazolin-4(3H)-ones as novel small molecules targeting histone deacetylases. Biological evaluation showed that these hydroxamic acids were potently cytotoxic against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon; PC-3, prostate; NCI-H23, lung). Most compounds displayed superior cytotoxicity than SAHA (suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid, Vorinostat) in term of cytotoxicity. Especially, N-hydroxy-7-(7-methyl-4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)heptanamide (5b) and N-hydroxy-7-(6-methyl-4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)heptanamide (5c) (IC 50 values, 0.10-0.16 μm) were found to be approximately 30-fold more cytotoxic than SAHA (IC 50 values of 3.29-3.67 μm). N-Hydroxy-7-(4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)heptanamide (5a; IC 50 values of 0.21-0.38 μm) was approximately 10- to 15-fold more potent than SAHA in cytotoxicity assay. These compounds also showed comparable HDAC inhibition potency with IC 50 values in sub-micromolar ranges. Background: Target-based approach to drug discovery currently attracts a great deal of interest from medicinal chemists in anticancer drug discovery and development worldwide, and Histone Deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors represent an extensive class of targeted anti-cancer agents. Among the most explored structure moieties, hydroxybenzamides and hydroxypropenamides have been demonstrated to have potential HDAC inhibitory effects. Several compounds of these structural classes have been approved for clinical uses to treat different types of cancer, such as vorinostat and belinostat., Aims: This study aims at developing novel HDAC inhibitors bearing quinazolinone scaffolds with potential cytotoxicity against different cancer cell lines., Methods: A series of novel N-hydroxyheptanamides incorporating 6-hydroxy-2 methylquinazolin-4(3H)-ones (14a-m) was designed, synthesized and evaluated for HDAC inhibitory potency as well as cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines, including HepG-2 (liver cancer), MCF-7 (breast cancer) and SKLu-1 (lung cancer). Molecular simulations were finally carried out to gain more insight into the structure-activity relationships. ADME-T predictions for selected compounds were also performed to predict some important features contributing to the absorption profile of the present hydroxamic derivatives., Results: It was found that the N-hydroxyheptanamide 14i and 14j were the most potent, both in terms of HDAC inhibition and cytotoxicity. These compounds displayed up to 21-71-fold more potent than SAHA (suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid, vorinostat) in terms of cytotoxicity, and strong inhibition against the whole cell HDAC enzymes with IC 50 values of 7.07-9.24μM. Docking experiments on HDAC2 isozyme using Autodock Vina showed all compounds bound to HDAC2 with relatively higher affinities (from -7.02 to -11.23 kcal/mol) compared to SAHA (-7.4 kcal/mol). Background: Even after the implementation of MPOWER, Viet Nam's cigarette tax remains only 36% of the retail price. This falls short of the World Health Organization's (WHO's) recommendation that the tax share be 70% of the retail price., Objective: To assess the health impact of different levels of cigarette taxation by estimating the impact on reducing tobacco consumption and smoking-attributable deaths (SADs)., Methods: A static model was developed based on a previous study by Jha et al. The model calculates the reduction in tobacco consumption, estimating the number of SADs averted and savings in health-related costs. The scenarios for increasing cigarette taxes were aligned with the Viet Nam Tobacco Tax Simulation Model developed by the WHO and the Vietnamese Ministry of Finance., Results: Four scenarios proposed by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health would prevent an estimated 63 339-581 165 SADs, equivalent to mortality costs of US$577-5296 million. In the ideal scenario, 6 258 361 SADs would be prevented and would save US$57.0 billion. Future young smokers would see the greatest health benefits of increasing the cigarette tax., Conclusion: Increasing the cigarette tax could reduce the substantial health impact of tobacco use, and further result in significant financial savings across society. Viet Nam should support efforts to further increase the cigarette tax following WHO recommendations.

In our search for novel small cytotoxic molecules potentially activating procaspase-3, we have designed and synthesized a series of novel N'-[(E)-arylidene]-2-(2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-4H-1,4-benzoxazin-4-yl)acetohydrazides (5, 6). Biological evaluation revealed that seven compounds, including 5h, 5j, 5k, 5l, 5n, 6a, and 6b, exhibited moderate to strong cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon cancer; PC-3, prostate cancer; NCI-H23, lung cancer). Among these compounds, two most cytotoxic compounds (5h and 5j) displayed from 3- up to 10-fold higher potency than PAC-1 and 5-FU in three cancer cell lines tested. Three compounds 5j, 5k, and 5n were also found to display better caspases activation activity in comparison to PAC-1. Especially, compound 5k activated the level of caspases activity by 200% higher than that of PAC-1. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of bone suppression imaging (BSI) in the diagnosis of tuberculosis from chest radiographs (CXRs) in Vietnam., Materials and Methods: A total of 97 images (50 tuberculosis and 47 normal) comprised the dataset for this observer study with unanimous consensus of a panel of 3 expert radiologists. The participants were 9 Vietnamese radiologists (6 chest radiologists and 3 non-chest radiologists). Participants recorded their confidence levels regarding the presence of tuberculosis after reading a standard chest radiograph directly first and then after BSI processing. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate participant performance. In addition, the change in participants' decision regarding the presence or absence of tuberculosis after BSI processing was recorded for each patient. Improvements in sensitivity and specificity were calculated., Results: The average AUC for non-chest radiologists improved from 0.882 without BSI to 0.933 with BSI (P = 0.048). In addition, BSI improved sensitivity by 10.0% whereas specificity decreased by 2.8% among non-chest radiologists., Conclusion: Using BSI improved the accuracy of tuberculosis diagnosis from CXRs, particularly by non-chest radiologists., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. In our search for novel histone deacetylases inhibitors, we have designed and synthesized a series of novel hydroxamic acids and N-hydroxybenzamides incorporating quinazoline heterocycles (4a - 4i, 6a - 6i). Bioevaluation showed that these quinazoline-based hydroxamic acids and N-hydroxybenzamides were potently cytotoxic against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon; PC-3, prostate; NCI-H23, lung). In term of cytotoxicity, several compounds, e.g., 4g, 4c, 4g - 4i, 6c, and 6h, displayed from 5- up to 10-fold higher potency than SAHA (suberoylanilidehydroxamic acid, vorinostat). The compounds were also generally comparable to SAHA in inhibiting HDACs with IC 50 values in sub-micromolar range. Some compounds, e.g., 4g, 6c, 6e, and 6h, were even more potent HDAC inhibitors compared to SAHA in HeLa extract assay. Docking studies demonstrated that the compounds tightly bound to HDAC2 at the active binding site with binding affinities higher than that of SAHA. Detailed investigation on the estimation of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) suggested that compounds 4g, 6c, and 6g, while showing potent HDAC2 inhibitory activity and cytotoxicity, also potentially displayed ADMET characteristics desirable to be expected as promising anticancer drug candidates., (© 2018 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

Background: Histone deacetylases (HDAC) enzymes are emerging as potential targets for cancer treatments. In this study, several series of novel hydroxamic acids incorporating 1-((1H- 1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl)-3-substituted-2-oxoindolines were explored., Methods: The compounds were designed using Autodock Vina program, then synthesized and evaluated in vitro and in silico for their inhibitory activity against HDACs. The cytotoxicity was measured by SRB method. The enzyme inhibitory effects of the compounds were evaluated by the fluorescent assay., Results: Biological evaluation showed that these hydroxamic acids were generally cytotoxic against four human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon; PC-3, prostate; AsPC-1, pancreas; NCI-H23, lung). Several compounds, e.g. 7g, 11c, and 11g, displayed up to 10-fold more potent than SAHA (suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid, vorinostat) in term of cytotoxicity. The synthesized compounds were also comparably potent to SAHA in inhibiting HDAC2. In particular, compound 11c displayed potential inhibitory effects against HDAC1, HDAC2, HDAC6, and HDAC8 with comparable or slightly higher potency than SAHA. Docking results on four class I and IIB isoenzymes indicated that these compounds tightly bound to HDACs at the active site with binding affinities much higher than that of SAHA. Finally, chemo-informatics approaches were employed to assess the pharmacokinetic and toxicity profiles of 7g and 11c. Introduction: The Law on Tobacco Control and the Law on Advertisement prohibit the advertising of any tobacco product in Vietnam. Tobacco promotion and marketing are alsostrictly prohibited. However, the violation of tobacco adverting and promotion is still common in Vietnam., Objectives: This article aims at describing the exposure to tobacco advertising and promotion among the population aged 15+ years in Vietnam based on the data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2015 from the view of the community, identifying any possible associations between the exposure to tobacco advertising and promotion and other individual factors, and discussing its possible public health implications., Method: A cross-sectional study with the nationwide scale. Secondary data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2015 was explored and analyzed. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regressions were applied in the data analysis., Results: The most common type of adults' exposure to tobacco advertising and promotion was points of sale (8.6%); 9.8% adults exposure to one source of tobacco advertising and 4.0% of them exposed to one source of tobacco promotion. Around 13.3% of Vietnamese adults were exposed to tobacco advertisement, while 2.0% were exposed to tobacco promotion, 5.3% were exposed to both tobacco advertising and promotion, and 16.6% were exposed to tobacco advertising or promotion. Gender, educational level, age, occupation, marital status, socioeconomic status, location (urban, rural), and current smoking status were associated with the exposure to tobacco advertising, tobacco promotion, tobacco advertising and promotion, and tobacco advertising or promotion., Conclusion and Recommendation: Although there are comprehensive bans on tobacco advertising and promotion in Vietnam, adults aged 15+ years still reported their exposure to tobacco advertising and promotion. There should be a strict enforcement of the ban on tobacco advertising and promotion in Vietnam.

Background: Despite male smokers being dominant in Vietnam, scarce evidence on trends in socioeconomics inequalities among the hardcore male smokers is available in the country. In this study, we aimed at assessing the trends in socioeconomics inequalities among the hardcore smokers in adult male population in Vietnam over a five-year period from 2010 to 2015., Methods: We used data from two rounds of the Vietnam Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) conducted in 2010 and 2015. We included only men aged 25 years and above in the analysis. We measured socioeconomic inequalities among hardcore smokers by calculating the concentration index. We conducted multiple logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with hardcore smoking among men aged 25 years and above., Results: The results of this study showed that the prevalence of male hardcore smokers aged 25 years and above in Vietnam was 9.5% in 2010 which increased to 13.1% in 2015. The prevalence of male hardcore smokers declined in the richest group from the 2010 level whereas it increased in the middle, poor and poorest groups. All values of weighted concentration indices indicated that the prevalence of male hardcore smokers occurred more among the poor men in Vietnam in both 2010 and 2015. The socioeconomic inequalities in hardcore smokers increased during 2010 and 2015. Residence in urban areas was significantly associated with higher adult male hardcore smoking in our study. Belonging to the age groups between 40 and 59 years, attaining primary and lower education, being self-employed, belonging to the poorest household group, smoking being allowed at home and no rule for smoking at home were associated with higher risk of being hardcore smoker among adult males in Vietnam., Conclusions: We found increased trends in socioeconomic inequalities in hardcore smoking among the study population. Our study results indicate that existing smoking secession and tobacco control policy and interventions need to be modified or new policies and interventions should be introduced with the perspective of addressing socioeconomic inequalities to have the desired impact. We recommend implementing specific targeted interventions for vulnerable population groups for better results.

Objectives: We report the prevalence of tobacco smoking among adult populations in Vietnam, 2015., Methods: The Vietnam GATS 2015 was a nationally representative survey. 9513 households were selected using two-stage random systematic sampling method. Handheld computers were used for capturing data. Data collection was carried-out by National Statistics Office of Vietnam in 2015. Weight was used in all estimates., Results: The Vietnam GATS 2015 found that the prevalence of smoking in Vietnam was 22.5% overall, 45.3% among men, and 1.1% among women. The overall 2015-2010 reduction in prevalence of any tobacco product was 5.3%. However, the reduction was not statistically significant. The significant reduction in prevalence of tobacco smoking was found for any type of cigarette (-8.4%), and especially for hand-rolled cigarettes (-38.3%). The use of cigarettes significantly decreased in urban areas (-14.7%)., Conclusion: The reduction in the prevalence of tobacco smoking in Vietnam during the last 5 years (2010-2015) has not been as high as expected, especially in rural areas. Further efforts are needed to continue to reduce the harms caused by tobacco smoking.

Second-hand tobacco smoke (SHS) exposure at home, especially among children, is a serious issue in Viet Nam. During the past decade, much effort has been taken for tobacco control in the country, including various prgorammes aiming to reduce SHS exposure among adults and children. This article analysed trends and factors associated with SHS exposure at home among school children aged 13-15 in Viet Nam, using the Global Youth Tobacco Surveys conducted in 2007 and 2014. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods with logistic regression were applied. Overall, there was a significant reduction in the level of exposure, from 58.5% (95%CI: 57.6-59.3) in 2007 to 47.1% (95%CI: 45.4-48.8) in 2014. Of the associated factors, having one or both parents smoking was significantly associated with the highest odds of SHS exposure at home (OR=5.0; 95%CI: 4.2-6.1). Conversely, having a mother with a college or higher education level was found to be a protective factor (OR=0.5; 95%CI: 0.3-0.8).

Viet Nam is a country with the highest rate of adult male smokers in the world. In 2010, the percentage of adult male smokers was 47.4%. Each year in Viet Nam, there are 40,000 lives lost from tobacco-related diseases. The Global Tobacco Youth Survey is an international standardized survey that has been conducted in more than 140 countries. To provide evidence for tobacco control, Viet Nam already conducted two rounds of GYTS in 2003 and 2007. The GYTS in 2014 is the survey's third iteration. This paper aims to document key methodological details and socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents included in the 2014 GYTS in Viet Nam. This survey followed international protocol and was conducted in 13 provinces representative of 6 geographical regions. A total of 3,430 school children, aged 13 to 15 years used a standardized answer sheet to answer 76 questions about seven tobacco-related topics, including prevalence of tobacco use, environmental tobacco smoke, access and availability, media and advertisement, cessation, knowledge and attitudes, tobaccorelated school curriculum. This GYTS provides valid and reliable data for monitoring tobacco use among youth in Vietnam and is recommended to be regularly repeated.

The aim of this paper is to report the rate of current and ever cigarette smoking and explore correlates of current cigarette smoking among adolescents aged 13-15 in Viet Nam. This analysis was derived from GYTS survey, which comprised of 3,430 adolescents aged 13-15, conducted in 2014 in 13 cities and provinces of Viet Nam. We calculated the weighted rates of current and ever cigarette smoking and reported patterns of smoking behavior. We also performed logistic regression to explore correlates of current cigarette smoking behavior. The weighted rate of ever cigarette smoking was 9.5% (95% confidence interval (CI): 8.5 %-10.5%), in which the weighted rate among males (15.4%; 95% CI: 13.6%-17.0%) was higher than that among females (4.2%; 95% CI: 3.3%-5.1%). The weighted rate of current cigarette smoking was relatively low at 2.5% (95%CI: 2.0%- 3.0%) with higher weighted rate among males (4.9%; 95% CI: 3.8%-5.9%) compared to the corresponding figure among females (0.2%; 95% CI: 0.0 %-0.5%). Current cigarette smoking was significantly higher among males than females, in students aged 15 versus 13 years old, and in students who had several or all close friends smoking and students with daily observation of smoking at school. For greater smoking reduction outcomes, we recommend that tobacco interventions for adolescents should consider targeting more male students at older ages, establish stricter adherence to school-based banning of cigarette smoking, engage both smoking and nonsmoking adolescents and empower adolescents to resist peer smoking influence as well as changing their norms or beliefs towards smoking benefits.

Scientific evidence on all aspects of smoking amongst youth is very important for designing appropriate interventions to reduce smoking among this vulnerable population. This paper describes current access to antismoking information among school children aged 13 to 15 years in Vietnam in 2014 and examines its potential impact on preventing smoking initiation. The data used in this paper were obtained from the 2014 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Vietnam. Students were asked questions about their level of awareness of anti-smoking information from various sources in the past 30 days and about lessons in school regarding the dangers of tobacco use during the last 12 months. Those who have never smoked were asked "whether or not they thought about avoiding cigarettes because of health warnings on cigarette packages" and answers were analyzed in combination with data on access to anti-smoking information from other sources. The prevalence of exposure to antismoking campaigns was high among school children in Viet Nam: 55.3% of current smokers reported thoughts of smoking cessation because of health warnings on cigarette packages; 60.5% of never smokers avoided initiating smoking because of the same health warnings. The potential impact of graphic health warnings to prevent school-aged children from smoking initiation would be stronger if there was concurrent access to anti-smoking programs on the dangers of tobacco use in schools. However, school education for tobacco prevention and control has not been as strong as expected. A more comprehensive school curriculum on tobacco prevention and control is recommended to reinforce antismoking messages among school children.

Efforts to reduce tobacco use among school children need to be based on understanding of access to cigarettes by these subjects because previous studies indicated that enforcement of laws for controlling tobacco sales seems to not affect teen/school children because they can obtain cigarettes from different sources. This paper aims to describe access to and availability of cigarettes among school students (aged 13-15 years old) according to the data from GYTS Vietnam 2014. In GYTS, a national school-based survey of students of grades 8-10, our findings showed that about 15% school children are current smokers who smoke at home, and that they could easily buy cigarettes from stores (63.2%), or someone else (27.8%), or street vendors (9%). Notably, over 85% of school children answered that they were not refused because of their age. This high percentage was nearly the same in the North (85.7%), the Centre (92.5%), and the South (89.7%) of Viet Nam. These findings show that it is quite easy for school children to obtain cigarettes and this is a crucial challenge for policy makers aiming to reduce tobacco use among youth in general and school-age students in particular.

Studies have shown that smoking is a learnt behavior, often initiated during adolescence. This paper aims to describe tobacco-related knowledge, attitude and associations among school adolescents aged 13-15 with exposure to anti-smoking information. Using data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Viet Nam, 2014, knowledge was measured through 4 questions about tobacco use, and attitude was assessed through 3 questions on personal, social and environmental aspects. Students giving most anti-tobacco responses to all questions were considered as having correct knowledge or appropriate attitude or both. Access to anti-smoking information was determined by exposure to any media messages on tobacco control during the past 30 days and teaching in school about the danger of tobacco use during the past 12 months. A substantial percentage of students thought that being near others who smoke might be harmful to them and smoking is harmful to health (89.4% and 89.6% respectively). However, only 46.4% reported that it is definitely difficult to quit smoking and 66.9% thought that smoking for only 1 or 2 years, once stopped, is harmful to health. Slightly more than half of the respondents reported appropriate attitude that young smokers have fewer friends than others and smoking makes them less attractive and less comfortable at social events. Noticing anti-smoking messages in the media together with having lessons in school about the dangers of tobacco substantially increased the likelihood of having correct knowledge, appropriate attitude and both. Despite relatively high awareness about smoking harms, effective educational communication is still highly needed to improve the level of comprehensive knowledge and an appropriate attitude regarding tobacco use.

Evidence shows that tobacco advertising and promotion activities may increase tobacco consumption and usage, especially in youth. Despite the regulation on prohibiting advertisement of any tobacco product, tobacco advertisement and promotion activities are still common in Vietnam. This article presents current exposure to tobacco advertising and promotion (TAP) among school children aged 13 to 15 years in Vietnam in 2014 and potential influencing factors. Data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2014 in Vietnam covering 3,430 school aged children were used. Both descriptive and analytical statistics were carried out with Stata 13 statistical software. Binary logistic regression was applied to explain the exposure to TAP among youth and examine relationships with individual factors. A significance level of p<0.05 and sampling weights were used in all of the computations. In the past 30 days, 48.6% of the students experienced exposure to at least 1 type of tobacco advertising or promotion. Wearing or otherwise using products related to tobacco was the most exposure TAP type reported by students (22.3%). The internet (22.1), points of sales (19.2) and social events (11.5) were three places that students aged 13-15 frequently were exposed to TAP. Binary logistic results showed that gender (female vs male) (OR = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.52 - 0.71), susceptibility to smoking (OR = 2.12, 95%CI: 1.53 - 2.92), closest friends' smoked (OR = 1.43, 95%CI: 1.2 - 1.7) and parents smoking status (OR = 2.83, 95%CI: 1.6 - 5.01) were significantly associated with TAP exposure among school-aged children. The research findings should contribute to effective implementation of measures for preventing and controlling tobacco use among students aged 13-15 in Viet Nam.

Histone deacetylases (HDAC) are currently a group of validated targets for anticancer drug discovery and development. In our research program to find novel small molecules targeting these enzymes, we designed and synthesized two series of 3-hydroxyimino-2-oxoindoline- and 3- methoxyimino-2-oxoindoline-based N-hydroxypropenamides (3a-g, 6a-g). The results show that these propenamides potently inhibited HDAC2 with IC50 values in sub-micromolar range, approximately 10-fold lower than that of SAHA (also known as suberoylanilohydroxamic acid). Evaluation of cytotoxicity of these compounds in three human cancer cell lines revealed that most of the synthesized compounds were up to 5-fold more cytotoxic than SAHA. Docking studies showed that the compounds bound to HDAC2 at the binding site with higher binding affinities compared to SAHA. Our present results demonstrate that these novel 3-substituted-2-oxoindoline-based N-hydroxypropenamides are potential for further development as anticancer agents.

In Vietnam, a pilot 'smoke-free hospital' model was implemented in nine hospitals in 2009-2010 to supply lessons learned that would facilitate a replication of this model elsewhere. This study aimed to assess smoking patterns among health professionals and to detect levels of second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure within hospital premises before and after the 'smoke-free hospital' model implementation. A pre- and post-intervention cross-sectional study was conducted in nine purposively selected hospitals. Air nicotine levels were measured using passive nicotine monitors; smoking evidence was collected through on-site observations; and smoking patterns were assessed through interviews with health workers. Despite the 'smoke-free hospital' intervention, smoking continued among health-care workers who were former smokers. Specifically, self-reported smoking prevalence significantly decreased post-intervention, but the number of daily cigarettes smoked at workplaces among male health workers remained unchanged. Post-intervention, smoking was more likely to take place outside buildings and cafeterias. However, air nicotine levels in the doctors' lounges and in emergency departments did not change post-intervention. Air nicotine levels at other sites decreased minimally. Tailored tobacco cessation programmes, targeting current smokers and mechanisms to enforce non-smoking, should be established to meet requirements of Vietnam's comprehensive National Tobacco Control Law effective in May 2013.

Introduction: The media play a critical role in tobacco control. Knowledge about the exposure of a population to antismoking information can provide information for planning communication activities in tobacco control. We examined exposure to antismoking information associated with socioeconomic and demographic factors among adults (≥15 years) in Vietnam., Methods: The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is a nationally representative household survey of noninstitutionalized men and women aged 15 years or older and was conducted in Vietnam in 2010 (N = 9,925). We used GATS data on exposure to sources of antismoking information and analyzed associations among socioeconomic and demographic groups., Results: An estimated 91.6% of the adult population was exposed to at least 1 source of antismoking information, and the mean number of sources of exposure was 3.7. Compared with their counterparts, respondents who were older, had higher education levels, higher economic status, and higher knowledge levels about the health consequences of smoking were more likely to be exposed to any source of antismoking information and to more informational sources. The most common source of exposure was television (85.9%). Respondents of higher social class (education, occupation, wealth) had more exposure through modern media sources (television), and respondents of lower social class were exposed to more traditional sources such as radio or loudspeakers., Conclusion: Exposure to at least 1 source of antismoking information is high in Vietnam, and the number and type of source varied by sociodemographic group. Use of multiple communication channels is recommended to reinforce antismoking messages and to reach different groups in the population.

Background: Complications following spontaneous or induced abortion are a major cause of maternal morbidity. To manage these complications, post-abortion care (PAC) services should be readily available and easy to access. Standard PAC treatment includes surgical interventions that are highly effective but require surgical providers and medical centers that have the necessary space and equipment. Misoprostol has been shown to be an effective alternative to surgical evacuation and can be offered by lower level clinicians. This study sought to assess whether 400 mcg sublingual misoprostol could effectively evacuate the uterus after incomplete abortion and to confirm its applicability for use at lower level settings., Methods: All women presenting with incomplete abortion at one of three hospitals in Vietnam were enrolled. Providers were not asked to record if the abortion was spontaneous or induced. It is likely that all were spontaneous given the legal status and easy access to abortion services in Vietnam. Participants were given 400 mcg sublingual misoprostol and instructed to hold the pills under their tongue for 30 minutes and then swallow any remaining fragments. They were then asked to return one week later to confirm their clinical status. Study clinicians were instructed to confirm a complete expulsion clinically. All women were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding satisfaction with the treatment., Results: Three hundred and two women were enrolled between September 2009 and May 2010. Almost all participants (96.3%) had successful completions using a single dose of 400 mcg misoprostol. The majority of women (87.2%) found the side effects to be tolerable or easily tolerable. Most women (84.3%) were satisfied or very satisfied with the treatment they received; only one was dissatisfied (0.3%). Nine out of ten women would select this method again and recommend it to a friend (91.0% and 90.0%, respectively)., Conclusions: This study confirms that 400 mcg sublingual misoprostol effectively evacuates the uterus for most women experiencing incomplete abortion. The high levels of satisfaction and side effect tolerability also attest to the ease of use of this method. From these data and given the international consensus around the effectiveness of misoprostol for incomplete abortion care, it seems timely that use of the drug for this indication be widely expanded both throughout Vietnam and wherever access to abortion care is limited., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00670761.

Introduction: The prevalence of waterpipe tobacco smoking is increasing globally and is associated with adverse outcomes requiring tobacco control interventions. We estimated the prevalence of waterpipe tobacco use among adult populations in Vietnam in 2010 and examined its association with sociodemographic factors., Methods: We used data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) conducted in Vietnam in 2010. GATS surveyed a national representative sample of adults aged 15 years or older from 11,142 households by using a 2-phase sampling design analogous to a 3-stage stratified cluster sampling. Descriptive statistical analyses and multivariate logistic regression modeling were conducted., Results: A total of 6.4% of Vietnamese aged 15 years or older (representing about 4.1 million adult waterpipe smokers) reported current waterpipe tobacco smoking. The prevalence of waterpipe tobacco smoking was significantly higher among men than women (13% vs 0.1%). Area of residence (rural or urban), age group, asset-based wealth quintile, and geographic region of residence were significantly associated with waterpipe tobacco smoking among men. The significant correlates of current waterpipe tobacco smoking among men were lower education levels, being middle-aged (45-54 years), lower asset-based wealth levels, living in rural areas, not living in the South East and the Mekong River Delta geographic regions, and the belief that smoking does not causes diseases., Conclusion: Rural dwellers who are poor should be targeted in tobacco control programs. Further studies are needed that examine perceptions of the adverse health effects and the cultural factors of waterpipe tobacco smoking.

Background: Although substantial efforts have been made to curtail smoking in Vietnam, the 2010 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) revealed that the proportion of male adults currently smoking remains high at 47.4%., Objectives: To determine the level of, and characteristics associated with, knowledge of the health consequences of smoking among Vietnamese adults., Design: GATS 2010 was designed to survey a nationally representative sample of Vietnamese men and women aged 15 and older drawn from 11,142 households using a two-stage sampling design. Descriptive statistics were calculated and multivariate logistic regression was used to examine associations between postulated exposure factors (age, education, access to information, ethnic group etc.) and knowledge on health risks., Results: General knowledge on the health risks of active smoking (AS) and exposure to second hand smoke (SHS) was good (90% and 83%, respectively). However, knowledge on specific diseases related to tobacco smoking (stroke, heart attack, and lung cancer) appeared to be lower (51.5%). Non-smokers had a significantly higher likelihood of demonstrating better knowledge on health risks related to AS (OR 1.6) and SHS (OR 1.7) than smokers. Adults with secondary education, college education or above also had significantly higher levels knowledge of AS/SHS health risks than those with primary education (AS: ORs 1.6, 1.7, and 1.9, respectively, and SHS: ORs 2.4, 3.9, and 5.7 respectively). Increasing age was positively associated with knowledge of the health consequences of SHS, and access to information was significantly associated with knowledge of AS/SHS health risks (ORs 2.3 and 1.9 respectively). Otherwise, non-Kinh ethnic groups had significantly less knowledge on health risks of AS/SHS than Kinh ethnic groups., Conclusions: It may be necessary to target tobacco prevention programs to specific subgroups including current smokers, adults with low education, non-Kinh ethnics in order to increase their knowledge on health risks of smoking. Comprehensive messages and/or images about specific diseases related to AS/SHS should be conveyed using of different channels and modes specific to local cultures to increase knowledge on smoking health consequences for general population.

Objective: The paper describes the pattern of exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) at home among the adult population of Vietnam and examines associated socio-demographic factors., Methods: A total of 11,142 households were selected for this survey using a two-phase sampling design analogous with three-stage stratified cluster sampling. The dependent variable was the status of exposure to SHS at home. Independent variables included gender, age, occupation, asset-based wealth quintile, ethnicity, marital status, residence. Logistic regression modelling was performed to examine the association with relevant factors of patterns of exposure to second-hand smoke among non-smokers., Results: Of adults aged 15 years and above (representing approximately 47 million people) 73.1% reported they were exposed to SHS at home at least monthly. Considering non-smokers only, the prevalence of exposure to SHS at home was 67.6% (equivalent to approximately 33 million non-smokers). The significant correlates of the status of exposure to SHS at home among non-smokers were female gender, ethnic minority, low education, and lack of smoking restriction at home., Conclusion: The study showed that a high percentage of people are exposed to second-hand smoke at home. Disadvantaged people were more likely than the better-off to be exposed to SHS at home.

This paper aims to estimate the prevalence of cigarette smoking among students in Vietnam ages 13-15 and examines its relationship with compositional and contextual factors. The data used in this paper were obtained from the 2007 Global Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in nine provinces in Vietnam. A multilevel logistic regression model was applied to analyse the association between the current incidence of cigarette smoking and factors on both the individual and school level. The prevalence of cigarette smoking among students was 3.3% overall. The prevalence of smoking among male students (5.9%) was higher than that among females (1.2%). Parental smoking was a significant risk factor for smoking among the students. Having a friend who smoked was the strongest predictor of smoking status among the study subjects. We have demonstrated that school-level factors appeared to impact the prevalence of cigarette smoking among students ages 13-15. This paper highlights the importance of utilising an extensive range of actions to prevent students from using tobacco in Vietnam. These actions should include providing specific curricula for students that address both individual characteristics and the school environment. Further, prevention programmes should also target both parental- and peer-smoking issues.
