Abstract Underground cavities have complex spatial structures and geological settings, their arrangement is dense and crisscrossed. The construction system involves multiple work surfaces, levels, and processes. The close integration of construction simulation with actual production conditions is crucial for enhancing the guidance that simulation results provide for practical engineering. Therefore, from the perspective of optimizing construction organization and management, this article comprehensively considers various factors in the construction process, innovatively introduces the principle of production line balance and the concept of rule cycle, and combines technology and management, an underground cavities construction simulation system (UCCSS) is developed. In UCCSS, a hierarchical model is built and calculation are performed on models with different construction methods by modifying the parameters as per the actual engineering characteristics. The simulation results are comprehensively analysed to determine the optimal construction programme. An application case is proposed based on the construction organisation design of the long and parallel diversion tunnels at the CB Hydropower Station. The results show that the system has good practicality and credibility and can provide guidance for the construction organisation design of underground cavities with various features.

Both selenium (Se) and anthocyanins are crucial for maintaining human health. Preharvest Se treatments could promote anthocyanin biosynthesis and augment Se levels in vegetables, helping to combat Se deficiencies in dietary intake. However, it remains unknown whether preharvest Se treatment could balance growth and anthocyanin biosynthesis in plants and what the appropriate treatment concentration is. In this study, preharvest treatments with sodium selenite at varying concentrations (0, 5, 10, and 30 mg/kg) affect the growth and nutritional quality of purple leaf mustard (Brassica juncea) with abundant anthocyanins. Lower Se concentrations (≤10 mg/kg) of preharvest treatments enhanced photosynthesis, facilitated root system development, consequently elevated the biomass. Conversely, higher Se levels (≥30 mg/kg) reduced photosynthesis and biomass. The dosage-dependent effects of Se treatments were corroborated through seedlings cultivated in hydroponic conditions. Moreover, nearly all Se treatments elevated the contents of various nutrients in leaf mustard, particularly anthocyanin and organic se. These results suggest an overall enhancement in nutritional quality of leaf mustard plants. Furthermore, the application of 10 mg/kg Se significantly enhanced the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and upregulated the expression of 12 genes pivotal for anthocyanin biosynthesis, further demonstrating the fortified effects of Se enrichment on anthocyanins in leaf mustard. Low-level Se treatments resulted in heightened antioxidant activity (APX, CAT, and POD), mitigating reactive oxygen species induced by increasing Se content in tissues. The enhanced antioxidant activities may be beneficial for the normal growth of leaf mustard under Se stress conditions. In conclusion, our study demonstrated preharvest Se treatment at 10 mg/kg could balance the growth and anthocyanin biosynthesis in purple leaf mustard. This study offers valuable insights into anthocyanin fortification through Se enrichment methods in agricultural practices, ensuring that such fortification does not compromise leafy vegetable yield.

Abstract Background Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the predominant birth defect. This study aimed to explore the association between maternal cardiovascular health (CVH) and the CHD risk in offspring. Methods We used the prospective data from the Fujian Birth Cohort Study, collected from March 2019 to December 2022 on pregnant women within 14 weeks of gestation. Overall maternal CVH was assessed by seven CVH metrics (including physical activity, smoking, sleep duration, body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and fasting plasma glucose), with each metric classified as ideal, intermediate or poor with specific points. Participants were further allocated into high, moderate and low CVH categories based on the cumulative CVH score. The association with offspring CHD was determined with log-binominal regression models. Results A total of 19810 participants aged 29.7 (SD: 3.9) years were included, with 7846 (39.6%) classified as having high CVH, 10949 (55.3%) as having moderate CVH, and 1015 (5.1%) as having low CVH. The average offspring CHD rate was 2.52%, with rates of 2.35%, 2.52% and 3.84% across the high, moderate and low CVH categories, respectively (P = 0.02). Adjusted relative risks (RRs) of having offspring CHD were 0.64 (95% CI: 0.45-0.90, P = 0.001) for high CVH and 0.67 (95% CI: 0.48-0.93, P = 0.02) for moderate CVH compared to low CVH. For individual metrics, only ideal total cholesterol was significantly associated with lower offspring CHD (RR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.59-0.83, P = 0.002). Conclusions Pregnant women of high or moderate CVH categories in early pregnancy had reduced risks of CHD in offspring, compared to those of low CVH. It is important to monitor and improve CVH during pre-pregnancy counseling and early prenatal care.

Obtaining comprehensive and accurate terrain data is important for engineering construction. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) are two widely used terrain modeling techniques. In mountainous areas, both techniques suffer limitations. These limitations occur in uninhabited areas, primarily caused by the steep terrain and inconvenient transportation conditions, resulting in poor data integrity and inadequate accuracy in UAV and TLS terrain mapping. In this article, we proposed a fusion modeling method based on UAV photogrammetry and TLS for high-precision terrain mapping in mountainous and canyon areas. The proposed method entails the use of TLS data to provide additional control points for UAV modeling, resulting in an improved accuracy of the modeling results. In addition, to quantify the optimization effect of this method, we proposed a 3-D model deviation comparison method based on the iterative closest point algorithm. This method can be employed to accurately depict the differences in distance and rotation angle between multiple terrain models. We applied this method to the Yebatan hydropower station in Southwest China, which increased the accuracy of the terrain data by 26% and expanded the effective range by over 100%.

Abstract Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of quarks and gluons, whose interactions can be described by a local SU(3) gauge symmetry with charges called “color quantum numbers”, is reviewed; the goal of this review is to provide advanced Ph.D. students a comprehensive handbook, helpful for their research. When QCD was “discovered” 50 years ago, the idea that quarks could exist, but not be observed, left most physicists unconvinced. Then, with the discovery of charmonium in 1974 and the explanation of its excited states using the Cornell potential, consisting of the sum of a Coulomb-like attraction and a long range linear confining potential, the theory was suddenly widely accepted. This paradigm shift is now referred to as the November revolution. It had been anticipated by the observation of scaling in deep inelastic scattering, and was followed by the discovery of gluons in three-jet events. The parameters of QCD include the running coupling constant, $$\alpha _s(Q^2)$$ α s ( Q 2 ) , that varies with the energy scale $$Q^2$$ Q 2 characterising the interaction, and six quark masses. QCD cannot be solved analytically, at least not yet, and the large value of $$\alpha _s$$ α s at low momentum transfers limits perturbative calculations to the high-energy region where $$Q^2\gg \varLambda _{{\textrm{QCD}}} ^2\simeq $$ Q 2 ≫ Λ QCD 2 ≃ (250 MeV) $$^2$$ 2 . Lattice QCD (LQCD), numerical calculations on a discretized space-time lattice, is discussed in detail, the dynamics of the QCD vacuum is visualized, and the expected spectra of mesons and baryons are displayed. Progress in lattice calculations of the structure of nucleons and of quantities related to the phase diagram of dense and hot (or cold) hadronic matter are reviewed. Methods and examples of how to calculate hadronic corrections to weak matrix elements on a lattice are outlined. The wide variety of analytical approximations currently in use, and the accuracy of these approximations, are reviewed. These methods range from the Bethe–Salpeter, Dyson–Schwinger coupled relativistic equations, which are formulated in both Minkowski or Euclidean spaces, to expansions of multi-quark states in a set of basis functions using light-front coordinates, to the AdS/QCD method that imbeds 4-dimensional QCD in a 5-dimensional deSitter space, allowing confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking to be described in a novel way. Models that assume the number of colors is very large, i.e. make use of the large $$N_c$$ N c -limit, give unique insights. Many other techniques that are tailored to specific problems, such as perturbative expansions for high energy scattering or approximate calculations using the operator product expansion are discussed. The very powerful effective field theory techniques that are successful for low energy nuclear systems (chiral effective theory), or for non-relativistic systems involving heavy quarks, or the treatment of gluon exchanges between energetic, collinear partons encountered in jets, are discussed. The spectroscopy of mesons and baryons has played an important historical role in the development of QCD. The famous X,Y,Z states – and the discovery of pentaquarks – have revolutionized hadron spectroscopy; their status and interpretation are reviewed as well as recent progress in the identification of glueballs and hybrids in light-meson spectroscopy. These exotic states add to the spectrum of expected $$q{{\bar{q}}}$$ q q ¯ mesons and qqq baryons. The progress in understanding excitations of light and heavy baryons is discussed. The nucleon as the lightest baryon is discussed extensively, its form factors, its partonic structure and the status of the attempt to determine a three-dimensional picture of the parton distribution. An experimental program to study the phase diagram of QCD at high temperature and density started with fixed target experiments in various laboratories in the second half of the 1980s, and then, in this century, with colliders. QCD thermodynamics at high temperature became accessible to LQCD, and numerical results on chiral and deconfinement transitions and properties of the deconfined and chirally restored form of strongly interacting matter, called the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), have become very precise by now. These results can now be confronted with experimental data that are sensitive to the nature of the phase transition. There is clear evidence that the QGP phase is created. This phase of QCD matter can already be characterized by some properties that indicate, within a temperature range of a few times the pseudocritical temperature, the medium behaves like a near ideal liquid. Experimental observables are presented that demonstrate deconfinement. High and ultrahigh density QCD matter at moderate and low temperatures shows interesting features and new phases that are of astrophysical relevance. They are reviewed here and some of the astrophysical implications are discussed. Perturbative QCD and methods to describe the different aspects of scattering processes are discussed. The primary parton–parton scattering in a collision is calculated in perturbative QCD with increasing complexity. The radiation of soft gluons can spoil the perturbative convergence, this can be cured by resummation techniques, which are also described here. Realistic descriptions of QCD scattering events need to model the cascade of quark and gluon splittings until hadron formation sets in, which is done by parton showers. The full event simulation can be performed with Monte Carlo event generators, which simulate the full chain from the hard interaction to the hadronic final states, including the modelling of non-perturbative components. The contribution of the LEP experiments (and of earlier collider experiments) to the study of jets is reviewed. Correlations between jets and the shape of jets had allowed the collaborations to determine the “color factors” – invariants of the SU(3) color group governing the strength of quark–gluon and gluon–gluon interactions. The calculated jet production rates (using perturbative QCD) are shown to agree precisely with data, for jet energies spanning more than five orders of magnitude. The production of jets recoiling against a vector boson, $$W^\pm $$ W ± or Z, is shown to be well understood. The discovery of the Higgs boson was certainly an important milestone in the development of high-energy physics. The couplings of the Higgs boson to massive vector bosons and fermions that have been measured so far support its interpretation as mass-generating boson as predicted by the Standard Model. The study of the Higgs boson recoiling against hadronic jets (without or with heavy flavors) or against vector bosons is also highlighted. Apart from the description of hard interactions taking place at high energies, the understanding of “soft QCD” is also very important. In this respect, Pomeron – and Odderon – exchange, soft and hard diffraction are discussed. Weak decays of quarks and leptons, the quark mixing matrix and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are processes which are governed by weak interactions. However, corrections by strong interactions are important, and these are reviewed. As the measured values are incompatible with (most of) the predictions, the question arises: are these discrepancies first hints for New Physics beyond the Standard Model? This volume concludes with a description of future facilities or important upgrades of existing facilities which improve their luminosity by orders of magnitude. The best is yet to come!

This review summarizes the research outcomes and findings documented in 45 journal papers using a shared tunnel boring machine (TBM) dataset for performance prediction and boring efficiency optimization using machine learning methods. The big dataset was collected during the Yinsong water diversion project construction in China, covering the tunnel excavation of a 20 km-section with 199 items of monitoring metrics taken with an interval of one second. The research papers were the result of a call for contributions during a TBM machine learning contest in 2019 and covered a variety of topics related to the intelligent construction of TBM. This review comprises two parts. Part I is concerned with the data processing, feature extraction, and machine learning methods applied by the contributors. The review finds that the data-driven and knowledge-driven approaches in extracting important features applied by various authors are diversified, requiring further studies to achieve commonly accepted criteria. The techniques for cleaning and amending the raw data adopted by the contributors were summarized, indicating some highlights such as the importance of sufficiently high frequency of data acquisition (higher than 1 second), classification and standardization for the data preprocessing process, and the appropriate selections of features in a boring cycle. The review finds that both supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods have been utilized by various researchers. The ensemble and deep learning methods have found wide applications. Part I highlights the important features of the individual methods applied by the contributors, including the structures of the algorithm, selection of hyperparameters, and model validation approaches.

This review discusses the application scenarios of the machine learning-supported performance prediction and the optimization efficiency of tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The rock mass quality ratings, which are based on the Chinese code for geological survey, were used to provide “labels” suitable for supervised learning. As a result, the generation of machine prediction for rock mass grades reasonably agreed with the ground truth documented in geological maps. In contrast, the main operational parameters, i.e., thrust and torque, can be reasonably predicted based on historical data. Consequently, 18 collapse sections of the Yinsong project have been successfully predicted by several researchers. Preliminary studies on the selection of the optimal penetration rate and cost were conducted. This review also presents a summary of the main achievements in response to the initiatives of the Lotus Pool Contest in China. For the first time, large and well-documented TBM performance data has been shared for joint scientific research. Moreover, the review discusses the technical problems that require further study and the perspectives in the future development of intelligent TBM construction based on big data and machine learning.

Objective Olecranon osteotomy and paratricipital approaches were widely used in the treatment of type C distal humerus fracture but some disadvantages exist, so a combined medial and lateral approach was designed. The objective of this study was to investigate and compare the clinical outcomes of combined medial and lateral approach with the paratricipital approach in open reduction and internal fixation of type C distal humerus fractures. Methods From May 2018 to April 2020, 37 patients with type C distal humerus fracture who accepted open reduction and internal fixation in our hospital were enrolled in this study. All cases were randomly divided into two groups according to the surgical approach: combined medial and lateral approach group (19 cases), paratricipital approach group (18 cases). All of the patients received open reduction and double vertical plates fixation. The operation and follow‐up indexes, including operation time, blood loss, incision length, triceps muscle strength, flexion‐extension arc of elbow and forearm rotation arc, were recorded and compared. Caja score was used to assess the quality of fractures reduction. Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) was used to evaluate the elbow function in the follow‐up. Complications such as incision infection, ulnar nerve injury, degenerative osteoarthritis, and heterotopic ossification were analyzed. Results The differences in age, gender, and AO classification of fractures between two groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The sum of medial and lateral incision length of combined approach group was longer than the midline incision of paratricipital approach group (15.4 ± 0.8 vs. 14.6 ± 0.8, p 0.05), blood loss (71.3 ± 24.5 vs. 72.8 ± 24.6, p > 0.05), and Caja score (16.05 ± 5.67 vs. 15.56 ± 5.66, p > 0.05). During the follow‐up, the MEPS of combined approach group was higher than that of paratricipital approach group at 3 months postoperatively (80.5 ± 5.7 vs. 68.9 ± 8.1, p 0.05) and at the last follow‐up (86.8 ± 7.1 vs. 86.9 ± 7.7, p > 0.05) between the two groups. There was no significant difference in triceps muscle strength (p > 0.05), flexion‐extension arc (126.8 ± 5.3 vs. 128.9 ± 6.0, p > 0.05), and forearm rotation arc (163.2 ± 5.3 vs. 163.6 ± 4.8, p > 0.05) at the last follow‐up. Although the incidence of complication of combined approach group (15.8%) was lower than that of paratricipital approach group (22.2%), the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusions The combined medial and lateral approach was an effective and safe way of open reduction and internal fixation for type C distal humerus fractures. Compared with the paratricipital approach, the combined medial and lateral approach could restore the elbow function more quickly postoperatively, and the long‐term results were comparable.

The surrounding rock mass stability of a large-scale underground powerhouse is the key issue among construction process. This paper takes the left bank underground powerhouse of the Baihetan Hydropower Station as a case study, which is subjected to high in-situ stress and complex geological conditions. Site monitoring, field survey and numerical simulation were conducted to study the deformation and failure mechanisms of surrounding rock mass. Main patterns of deformation and failure were identified, mechanisms were analyzed, and countermeasures were proposed. Results indicate that there are two patterns of deformation and failure, the stress-dominated type and structure-dominated type. Deformation and failure at different locations are mainly influenced by in-situ stress and rock mass structure. Since the direction of the in situ maximum principal stress gently inclines to the upstream side and intersects with the powerhouse axis at a large angle, compressive stress is concentrated at the upstream spandrel and downstream sidewall foot during excavation. The stress concentration results in spalling, fracture and shotcrete cracking, belonging to the stress-dominated failure, and the countermeasures are timely systematic support and prestressed bolt. At the downstream spandrel and sidewalls, unloading deformation is the main pattern and prestressed anchor cable at right time is recommended. The structure-dominated large deformation occurs at the arch and downstream sidewall under the impact of shear zones, and rock mass grouting and supplementary prestressed anchor cable are effective measures. The results can provide references for the failure mechanism analysis of surrounding rock mass and construction dynamic optimization of large-scale underground powerhouse.

Abstract Background Treacher Collins Ι syndrome (TCS1, OMIM:154500) is an autosomal dominant disease with a series of clinical manifestations such as craniofacial dysplasia including eye and ear abnormalities, small jaw deformity, cleft lip, as well as repeated respiratory tract infection and conductive hearing loss. Two cases of Treacher Collins syndrome with TCOF1(OMIM:606847) gene variations were reported in the article, with clinical characteristics, gene variants and the etiology. Methods The clinical data of two patients with Treacher Collins syndrome caused by TCOF1 gene variation were retrospectively analyzed. The whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed to detect the pathogenic variants of TCOF1 gene in the patients, and the verification of variants were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Results Proband 1 presented with bilateral craniofacial deformities, conductive hearing loss and recurrent respiratory tract infection. Proband 2 showed bilateral craniofacial malformations with cleft palate, which harbored similar manifestations in her family. She died soon after birth due to dyspnea and feeding difficulties. WES identified two novel pathogenic variants of TCOF1 gene in two probands, each with one variant. According to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, the heterozygous variation NM_001371623.1: c.877del (p. Ala293Profs*34) of TCOF1 gene was detected in Proband 1, which was evaluated as a likely pathogenic (LP) and de novo variant. Another variant found in Proband 2 was NM_001135243.1: c.1660_1661del (p. D554Qfs*3) heterozygous variation, which was evaluated as a pathogenic variation and the variant inherited from the mother. To date, the two variants have not been reported before. Conclusion Our study found two novel pathogenic variants of TCOF1 gene and clarified the etiology of Treacher Collins syndrome. We also enriched the phenotypic spectrum of Treacher Collins syndrome and TCOF1 gene variation spectrum in the Chinese population, and provided the basis for clinical diagnosis, treatment and genetic counseling.

The task of landslide recognition focuses on extracting the location and extent of landslides over large areas, providing ample data support for subsequent landslide research. This study explores the use of UAV and deep learning technologies to achieve robust landslide recognition in a more rational, simpler, and faster manner. Specifically, the widely successful DeepLabV3+ model was used as a blueprint and a dual-encoder design was introduced to reconstruct a novel semantic segmentation model consisting of Encoder1, Encoder2, Mixer and Decoder modules. This model, named DeepLab for Landslide (DeepLab4LS), considers topographic information as a supplement to DeepLabV3+, and is expected to improve the efficiency of landslide recognition by extracting shape information from relative elevation, slope, and hillshade. Additionally, a novel loss function term—Positive Enhanced loss (PE loss)—was incorporated into the training of DeepLab4LS, significantly enhancing its ability to understand positive samples. DeepLab4LS was then applied to a UAV dataset of Baihetan reservoir, where comparative tests demonstrated its high performance in landslide recognition tasks. We found that DeepLab4LS has a stronger inference capability for landslides with less distinct boundary information, and delineates landslide boundaries more precisely. More specifically, in terms of evaluation metrics, DeepLab4LS achieved a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 76.0% on the validation set, which is a substantial 5.5 percentage point improvement over DeepLabV3+. Moreover, the study also validated the rationale behind the dual-encoder design and the introduction of PE loss through ablation experiments. Overall, this research presents a robust semantic segmentation model for landslide recognition that considers both optical and topographic semantics of landslides, emulating the recognition pathways of human experts, and is highly suitable for landslide recognition based on UAV datasets.

Background: Jin-Zhen oral liquid (JZOL), a well-known traditional Chinese medicine prescription (TCMp), has extensively been used to treat acute bronchitis in children more than four hundred years in China. However, the current quality control standard of JZOL is inadequate, posing challenges for its internationalization. Purpose: In this study, a Q-marker screening strategy based on multi-factor analysis was proposed to comprehensively evaluate anti-inflammatory Q-markers of Jin-Zhen oral liquid (JZOL). Methods: Firstly, the chemical profile and the pharmacokinetics properties of multiple components in JZOL were characterized by UPLC-Q/TOF-MS and UPLC-QqQ-MS. By integrating the measurable and absorbed components, twenty-two components with structures accurately defined, were selected as candidate Q-markers of JZOL. Following that, a network connecting 22 components and targets closely associated with bronchitis was established. Afterwards, a multi-factor analysis mode was developed to balance the components’ multiple characteristics, and screen out the anti-inflammatory Q-markers in JZOL. Finally, the anti-inflammatory activity evaluation was conducted by LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages to prove the representativeness of anti-inflammatory Q-markers in JZOL. Results: As a result, a total of 92 components were characterized in JZOL and the pharmacokinetics properties of 11 bioactive components in vivo were further characterized. Then, an overlapping of 46 targets involved in the interactions of selected 22 candidate Q-markers and the regulation of bronchitis inflammation were collected. Subsequently, a multi-factor analysis was developed on 22 candidate anti-inflammatory Q-markers covering five factors, with the statistic KMO values of 0.645, and the P values of Bartlett's Test equal to 0.000. A total of seven ingredients (aloeemodin-8-O-β-d-glucopyranoside, baicalin, chrysin-7-O-β-d-glucuronide, oroxylin A 7-O-β-d-glucuronide, wogonoside, chrysophanol-8-O-β-d-glucopyranoside, and skullcapflavone II) were selected as Q-markers of JZOL, and the inhibitory effects of these candidate Q-markers on the secretion of inflammatory cytokes (NO, IL-6, IL-1β, and PGE2) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells were evaluated and confirmed. Conclusion: This study not only offers a fresh approach to uncovering Q-markers in the quality control research of TCMps but also identifies the suitable anti-inflammatory Q-markers for JZOL for the first time, with the potential to serve as a reference for existing quality control standards of JZOL.

Introduction: Reservoir landslides undergo large deformations during the early stages of impoundment and maintain long-term persistent deformations during the operational period of the reservoir. The management of reservoir landslides mostly focuses on the early identification, risk assessment during the large deformations, and long-sequence monitoring during long-term persistent deformations, which requires sufficient continuity and integrity of the landslide monitoring data.Methods: Taking the Wulipo (WLP) landslide in Baihetan Reservoir as example, this paper proposes a reservoir landslide monitoring method that integrates field survey, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) monitoring, which can effectively eliminate the practical monitoring gaps between multiple monitoring methods and improve the continuity and completeness of monitoring data.Results and discussion: First, this study determined the initiation time of the landslide through the field investigation and collected five period of UAV data to analyze the overall displacement vector of the WLP landslide using sub-pixel offset tracking (SPOT). On the basis of the above data, we compensated for the missing data in GNSS system due to the practical monitoring vacancies by combining the field survey and the landslide-water level relationship. Based on these monitoring data, this paper points out that the WLP landslide is a buoyancy-driven landslide, and whether or not accelerated deformation will occur is related to the maximum reservoir water level. Finally, this study analyzed and discussed the applicability of UAV photogrammetry for reservoir landslide monitoring in the absence of ground control points (GCPs), and concluded that this method can be quickly and flexibly applied to the stage of large deformation of reservoir landslides.

Objective To compare the clinical efficacy of performing simple plate fixation with that using a plate combined with fracture end fixation to investigate the necessity of fracture end fixation outside the plate in cases of oblique fracture of the middle clavicle. Methods This was a retrospective follow‐up study of patients with middle clavicle oblique fractures (Robinson types 2A1 and 2A2) between 2015 and 2020. Patients were divided into two groups according to their treatment options: the simple plate fixation (SPF) group (n = 79; 43 men and 36 women; average age, 46.37 ± 14.54 years) and the plate combined with fracture local fixation (PLFP) group (n = 81; 36 men and 45 women; average age, 48.42 ± 12.55 years). Intraoperative blood loss, operation time, postoperative fracture healing time, postoperative shoulder function score (Constant–Murley and disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand [DASH] scores), clinical complications, and postoperative subjective satisfaction were compared between the two groups. Results One hundred sixty patients with a sufficient follow‐up period were included in the final analysis: 79 in the SPF group (follow‐up time: 16.24 ± 3.94 months) and 81 in the PLFP group (follow‐up time: 16.15 ± 3.43 months). Age, sex, body mass index, follow‐up duration, fracture classification, and cause of injury were not significantly different between the two groups. There was no significant difference in blood loss, Constant–Murley and DASH scores, follow‐up period, and postoperative subjective satisfaction between the two groups (P > 0.05). The fracture healing time was shorter in the PLFP group than in the SPF group (4.41 ± 0.99 vs. 4.87 ± 1.60 months, P 0.05). Conclusion Although the healing time was shorter in the PLFP group than in the SPF group, the clinical efficiency of the two methods in the treatment of oblique fracture of the middle clavicle was similar.

Healthcare facilities in geological hazard-prone areas not only are responsible for local basic medical services but also are the main provider of hazard emergency rescue work. The selection of their sites is further complicated by the need to consider both the equalization of regional medical services and resource allocation and the impact of geological hazards on site safety. Shimian County in Sichuan Province, a geological disaster-prone area, was chosen as the study area. First, suitability analysis of the construction land was used to determine the site alternatives for new healthcare facilities, and an evaluation index system of construction land suitability consisting of geological hazard susceptibility, slope and aspect was established. Then, the suitability was evaluated by the Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operator, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the quantitative method of Regular Increasing Monotone (RIM) were used to calculate the criterion weights and order weights in the Ordered Weighted Averaging operator respectively. The suitability results were classified into five levels: high, moderate, average, barely suitable, and unsuitable. Twelve site alternatives were identified in the highly and moderately suitable areas. Finally, a comprehensive evaluation index system consisting of indices such as construction land suitability and medical service accessibility was established, the PROMETHEE II method was conducted to comprehensively evaluate the site alternatives, and ranked results for the 12 site alternatives were obtained. These ranked results were analyzed by subindexes and Graphical Analysis for Interactive Aid (GAIA) to obtain a score for each alternative index and its similarity to the alternative, which could significantly help decision-making. This study achieves reasonable and scientific site selection for healthcare facilities in geological hazard-prone areas, and the results can provide references for relevant decision-makers.

Objective To investigate the factors, surgical treatment methods and clinical effect of internal fixation failure of intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures. Methods From June 2015 to May 2019, arthroplasty and internal fixation revision were used to treat 18 cases of internal fixation failure of intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures. There were 10 males and eight females, with an average age of 67.3 years (38–92 years). The 16 cases of initial intertrochanteric fractures were classified according to AO/OTA:13 cases of A2 and 3 cases of A3, the other 2 cases were subtrochanteric fractures (Seinsheimer type IV). The internal fixation failure was treated with total hip arthroplasty (6 cases), bipolar hemiarthroplasty (4 cases), revision with proximal femoral lockingplate (4 cases) and extend intramedullary nail (4 cases). Results All patients were followed up for an average of 24.7 months (range, 12 to 36 months). The average operative time was 111.4 min (range, 72 to 146 min) and the average intraoperative blood loss was 403.6 mL (range, 200 to 650 mL). This article investigates how talent policies affect corporate green technological innovation through executive incentive strategies based on signaling theory and principal-agent theory, by examining samples from 1,536 A-share listed companies between 2010 and 2020. The findings indicate that talent policy helps enterprises boost green technological innovation while accelerating it by improving executive compensation incentives. This effect path is more significant in high-tech enterprises and enterprises with weak solvency ratios. However, we find that the current talent policy has inhibited the green innovation of enterprises. The conclusions provide micro-evidence for the impact mechanism by which talent policy affects enterprise green technological innovation and offer scientifically based guidelines for optimizing talent policy to promote innovation-driven development strategy.

Subsurface wastewater infiltration (SWI) is an environmentally friendly technology for the advanced treatment of domestic sewage. Clogging (including physical, chemical and biological clogging) of the porous medium not only directly reduces the hydraulic load (treatment efficiency), but also reduces the service life. Although clogging has become one of the key issues discussed in several reports, there are still several gaps in understanding, especially in its occurrence process and identification. SWI clogging causes, development process and solutions are different from those of constructed wetlands. This article quotes some reports on constructed wetlands to provide technical ideas and reference for revealing SWI clogging problems. Based on the analysis of the clogging genesis, this review gathers the main factors that affect the degree of clogging, and new methods for the identification of clogging conditions. Some preventive and unclogging measures/strategies are presented. Finally, it is suggested that to effectively alleviate the clogging phenomenon and extend the service life, priority should be given to the comprehensive analysis of wastewater quality and solid constituents accumulated in the pores. Then, the effectiveness of in-situ strategies, such as alternating operation will be the main focuses of future research. While excavated discharge channels are often used for the emergency treatment of landslide-dammed lakes, the erosion of the discharge channel of a landslide dam is complex and rarely monitored on site. This work presents a quantitative monitoring method based on three-dimensional terrestrial laser scanning technology (TLS) for analyzing the erosion of a landslide dam discharge channel and then applies this method to evaluate the emergency engineering treatment of the 2018 Baige landslide-dammed lake in 2019. The proposed method uses TLS technology to accurately track the dynamic evolution of the discharge channel and to quantify the lateral erosion. Moreover, qualitatively analysis for vertical erosion is conducted based on the difference between actual and hypothetic river elevation. The results indicate that erosion processes of landslide deposition fluctuate as the results of flow discharge variations. Damage to the covering layer consisting of large particles is considered to be the main cause of this phenomenon. According to the relationship between erosion intensity (EI) and flow velocity, an empirical formula is deduced for erosion analysis. The key parameter in this formula is determined by the variation rate of discharge, the flow velocity, the composition of riverbank and the flow field distribution.

AIM: To observe the application of light emitting diode(LED)irradiation in rat retinal vascular endothelial cells with high glucose and its effect and mechanism on photobioregulation. METHODS:Rat retinal vascular endothelial cells were randomly divided into three groups: normal control group, high glucose model group, high glucose model light emitting diode irradiation group, and cells in the high glucose model light emitting diode group began to use light emitting diodes in the incubator 48h after modeling. The cells are irradiated. MTT cell apoptosis experiment was used to detect the apoptosis rate of each group; laser confocal microscope was used to observe the changes of intracellular calcium in retinal vascular endothelial cells; Western blot was used to detect the phosphorylated serine-threonine kinase(P-AKT)protein in each group expression.RESULTS: The apoptosis rates of normal control group, high glucose model group, and high glucose model light emitting diode irradiation group were 7.54%±2.67%, 31.69%±5.74%, and 21.65%±3.52%, respectively(P2+ fluorescence showed green fluorescence with a pixel value of 192.65±50.54. In the high-sugar model group, the cytoplasm showed a stronger green fluorescence with a fluorescent pixel value of 710.69±100.38. The green fluorescent pixel value was 430.47±80.67, which was significantly higher than the normal control group, but significantly lower than the high-sugar model group. The intra-Ca2+ fluorescence pixel values in the three groups were statistically significant(PPCONCLUSION: High-glucose environment inhibits the activity of threonine kinase pathway, which has an effect on calcium homeostasis of rat retinal vascular endothelial cells and promotes apoptosis. Low-intensity led irradiation can activate threonine kinase pathway and reduce the apoptosis rate caused by high glucose, which is of great application value.

As TLR2 agonists, several lipopeptides had been proved to be candidate vaccine adjuvants. In our previous study, lipopeptides mimicking N-terminal structures of the bacterial lipoproteins were also able to promote antigen-specific immune response. However, the structure-activity relationship of lipopeptides as TLR2 agonists is still unclear. Here, 23 synthetic lipopeptides with the same lipid moiety but different peptide sequences were synthesized, and their TLR2 activities in vitro and mucosal adjuvant effects to OVA were evaluated. LP1-14, LP1-30, LP1-34 and LP2-2 exhibited significantly lower cytotoxicity and stronger TLR2 activity compared with Pam2CSK4, the latter being one of the most potent TLR2 agonists. LP1-34 and LP2-2 assisted OVA to induce more profound specific IgG in sera or sIgA in BALF than Pam2CSK4. Furthermore, the possibility of LP1-34, LP2-2 and Pam2CSK4 as the mucosal adjuvant for the SARS-CoV-2 recombinant RBD (rRBD) was investigated. Intranasally immunized with rRBD plus either the novel lipopeptide or Pam2CSK4 significantly increased the levels of specific serum and respiratory mucosal IgG and IgA, while rRBD alone failed to induce specific immune response due to its low immunogenicity. The novel lipopeptides, especially LP2-2, significantly increased levels of rRBD-induced SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody in sera, BALF and nasal wash. Finally, Support vector machine (SVM) results suggested that charged residues in lipopeptides might be beneficial to the agonist activity, while lipophilic residues might adversely affect the agonistic activity. Figuring out the relationship between peptide sequence in the lipopeptide and its TLR2 activity may lay the foundation for the rational design of novel lipopeptide adjuvant for COVID-19 vaccine.

The underground powerhouse of a hydropower station, in the form of a cavern group, is generally characterized by a large scale and complicated spatial structure. During the construction phase, extensive excavation in limited underground space may cause a multi-cavern effect between adjacent caverns and thus lead to deformation and failure of the surrounding rock mass, which undoubtedly compromises cavern stability and construction safety. This paper takes the drainage gallery LPL5-1 in the Baihetan underground powerhouse (adjacent to the main powerhouse) as a case study. During the excavation of the main powerhouse, the shotcrete at the upstream arch of LPL5-1 cracked, ballooned and peeled off. After field investigation and numerical simulations, the stress evolution induced by excavation is studied and the failure mechanism is analyzed. The results indicate that the multi-cavern effect led to the surrounding rock mass failures in LPL5-1, which is related to the continuous excavation of the main powerhouse and the resultant extensive stress adjustment. During the main powerhouse excavation, a stress concentration zone was generated at the upstream arch and was intensified with the excavation progressed. The expanded stress concentration zone affected LPL5-1 and made its surrounding rock mass split, thus causing the shotcrete cracking.

Isobutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (IBDHD, MIM: #611283) is a rare autosomal recessive hereditary disease, which is caused by genetic mutations of acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (ACAD) 8 and associated with valine catabolism. Here, tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was applied to screen 302,993 neonates for inherited metabolic diseases (IMD) in Ningbo of China from 2017 to 2020. The results suggest that 198 newborns (0.7‰) were initially screened positive for IBDHD with C4-Carnitine, and 27 cases (0.1‰) were re-screened positive. Genetic diagnosis was performed on 21 of the 27 cases. Seven compound heterozygous variations, three biallelic variations, and one heterozygous variation of ACAD8 were found with a pathogenicity rate of 33.3% (7/21). In addition, seven biallelic variations, one heterozygous variation of acyl-CoA dehydrogenase short chain (ACADS), and one biallelic variation of acyl-CoA dehydrogenase short/branched chain (ACADSB) was detected. Further research showed that ACAD8 mutations of 11 IBDHD cases distributed in six different exons with total 14 mutation sites. Five of which were known suspected pathogenic sites (c.286G > A, c.553C > T, c.1000C > T, c.409G > A, c.500del) and six were novel mutation sites: c.911A > T, c.904C > T, c.826G > A, c.995T > C, c.1166G > A, c.1165C > T. This finding enriched the mutation spectrum of ACAD8 in IBDHD.

The corrosion of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete is a serious problem affecting the durability of concrete structures. And the steel corrosion caused by chloride ion erosion is the most serious damage to reinforced concrete structures, which affects the safety and service life of the structure. In order to prevent steel corrosion caused by chloride, it is necessary to pay more attention to chloride ion penetration damage. At present, the most commonly used method is to use additives in concrete structures, so as to improve the durability of concrete by reducing its permeability coefficient. Cement-based permeable crystalline admixtures can effectively improve the impermeability and mechanical properties of concrete by complex crystallization reactions between reactive chemicals and cement gels. In the paper, the Penetron admix 803 was selected as a typical CPCA in the experimental study, and the rapid chloride migration (RCM) experiments and mechanics experiments were carried out for four concrete structures with different dosages of Penetron admix 803 (PA8). Compared with plain concrete, the concrete structure containing PA8 makes it difficult for water and other liquids to enter by filling micropores and shrinkage cracks by scanning electron microscope test, so its impermeability is greatly improved. And concrete structure containing permeable crystalline admixture can reduce chloride ion permeability effectively. The experimental results showed that with the increase of PA8 content, the diffusion coefficient of the concrete structure decreased rapidly from 45.8 × 10−12 m2/s to 17.7 × 10−12 m2/s, while the service life of concrete structures increased continuously. And the mechanism of the chemical reaction between PA8 and the internal components of concrete structure was revealed, which was mainly due to the catalytic reaction between the reactive chemicals of PA8 and the cement hydrates of concrete structure forming insoluble crystals filled with concrete micropores. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that the permeable crystalline admixture can greatly improve the chloride-related durability and mechanical properties of the concrete structure.

Patients with recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following liver transplantation (LT) have a poor prognosis owing to rapid tumor progression. Yttrium-90 radioembolization (90Y-RE) has been shown to be a safe and efficacious transarterial radioembolization treatment for patients with advanced HCC. However, to our knowledge, no data are available for patients with recurrent HCC following LT. Here we report a case of severe bile duct complication after transarterial radioembolization with yttrium-90 in a patient who experienced HCC recurrence following LT. The present case suggests that 90Y-RE should be cautiously performed in patients with recurrent HCC following LT.

Frequent rockfall events at the Huashiya cliff near the dam site of Jinsha Hydropower Station poses great threats to construction projects along the Jinsha River. In order to protect the construction area, a comprehensive analysis of rockfall hazard was carried out including field survey, numerical simulation, quantitative assessment and mitigation strategy. High resolution Digital Terrain Model (DTM) was created by Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), then used for the identification of rockfall sources and simulation of rockfall run-out behaviours. Approximately 60 rockfall simulations were conducted to analyze the interaction between rockfall block and protection nets. Quantitative assessment of rockfall hazard was then made to visualize the distribution and hazard of rockfall. The difference between the 60 rockfall simulations was quantified through Rockfall Interception Ratio (RIR) and the Energy Ratio of Overflying Rockfall (EROR). By integrating RIR, EROR and cost, the performance of protection measures were quantitatively assessed. Then, an optimization strategy was proposed to improve the cost-efficiency of the protection system. At the end of this paper, some problems that can be encountered when creating DTM and hazard maps were discussed, and some advices for designing passive protection system were introduced.

Multiple reactivation of a large landslide might dam river course at the same site in different periods, which would exert long-term and considerable influence on society and environment. In this paper, we consider such successive damming episodes as an integrated system and take the 2018 Baige event due to successive landslides as an example to explore the hazard characteristics of successive landslide-dammed lakes. Based on the river valley conditions at dam site before the first and second blockage, the height of dams formed by landslides with different volumes is estimated, and then the stability and peak discharge of these landslide dams are evaluated. The calculation results show that the hazard of the dammed lake triggered by subsequent slide event in the successive landslides could increase significantly. The cause of such hazard increasement of the subsequent landslide dam is also discussed. The experience obtained in this case study can facilitate better understanding the hazard characteristics of similar landslide-dammed lakes, as well as planning engineered controls in advance in order to decease the hazard of dammed lake formed by the potential subsequent landslide.

Purpose: Undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injuries are easy to miss or underestimate, and many cases are treated without surgical fixation. It has not yet widely known whether conservative treatment for undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injuries may lead to a poor outcome. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcomes of conservative versus surgical management (percutaneous position screw) of undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injury. Methods: We analysed 61 cases in this retrospective study, including 38 males and 23 females. Forty-one patients were managed conservatively, while 20 patients received surgical treatment involving minimal invasive percutaneous position screw. American orthopaedic foot &ankle society (AOFAS), foot function index (FFI, including FFI disability, FFI pain score and activity limitation scale) scores, Maryland foot score and short form-36 (SF-36) were recorded and compared after a follow-up of 10–16 months (average 12.3). Characterized by large scale, high frequency, and strong destructiveness, debris flow has become the most noticeable geohazards throughout the world, especially in the mountainous areas of southwestern China. On August 20, 2019, large-scale heavy rainfall pummeled Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, Southwestern China, which resulted in a cluster of debris flows (the “8·20” clustered debris flows event), and caused considerable economic losses (approximately 3.4 billion RMB were lost) and heavy casualties (48,862 people were displaced, 16 people died and 22 people went missing). Based on field investigation, image data interpretation, mechanism analysis, and other methods, this study reveals the formation mechanism, dynamic evolutionary process, and impacts of human activities on the “8·20” clustered debris flows event. Results from a comprehensive analysis indicate that the occurrence of short-term, high-intensity rainfall and the excessive supply of solid material were the main factors that triggered this catastrophic event. With the debris flow flowing into the main river, this event presented an extremely apparent disaster chain effect. It is also found that improper site selection and inadequate design of human activities played a crucial role in the movement process of the debris flow that directly aggravated the losses. Finally, to improve debris flow prediction and prevention, some early warning and mitigation measures are discussed.

In the process of underground cavern excavation, the existence of the interlayer shear zones or large faults often makes the surrounding rock tend to be unstable or even deformed. Under the influence of interlayer shear zone C2, different degrees of deformation and failure occurred in many parts during the excavation of the Baihetan left bank underground powerhouse. Based on field monitoring and numerical calculation, this paper studies the deformation and failure characteristics of the rock mass with C2 in the whole excavation process and the failure mechanisms are analyzed. The results show that C2 has poor mechanical properties. In the process of excavation, it mainly induces two failure modes: rock collapse and shear deformation, which specifically leads to rock collapses, large deformation and shotcrete cracking in the main powerhouse, and shear deformation in the omnibus bar caves. In addition, the similarities and differences between this study and other studies on the deformation and failure of surrounding rock of underground powerhouse in recent years are discussed, and the relevant treatment measures for C2 are given. The above research results can be a reference for other related studies.

Based on the mechanism of neutral meson mixing, we predict the branching fraction of the semileptonic decay of Ds+→π0ℓ+νℓ (ℓ=e, μ) using recently measured branching fraction of Ds+→ηe+νe by BESIII experiment. We also give a formula that can describe the neutral meson mixing of π0, η, η′ and a pseudoscalar gluonium G in a unified way. The predicted branching fraction of Ds+→π0e+νe decay is B(Ds+→π0e+νe)=(2.65±0.38)×10−5. It is important to search for the decay Ds+→π0ℓ+νℓ in experiment, in order to understand the mechanism of π0 production in Ds+→π0 transition in semileptonic decay. We also estimate the branching fraction of Ds+→π0τ+ντ, which is the only kinematically allowed semi-tauonic decay mode of the charmed meson, since the mass value of Ds+ meson is just slightly above the threshold of π0τ+ generation in the semi-tauonic decay.

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is becoming a common global concern due to the emergence of multi-drug or pan-drug resistant strains. Confronting the issue of antimicrobial resistance by developing vaccines against the resistant pathogen is becoming a common strategy. In this study, different methods for preparing A. baumannii outer membrane vesicles (AbOMVs) vaccines were developed. sOMV (spontaneously released AbOMV) was extracted from the culture supernatant, while SuOMV (sucrose-extracted AbOMV) and nOMV (native AbOMV) were prepared from the bacterial cells. Three AbOMVs exhibited significant differences in yield, particle size, protein composition, and LPS/DNA content. To compare the protective efficacy of the three AbOMVs, groups of mice were immunized either intramuscularly or intranasally with each AbOMV. Vaccination via both routes conferred significant protection against lethal and sub-lethal A. baumannii challenge. Moreover, intranasal vaccination provided more robust protection, which may be attributed to the induction of significant sIgA response in mucosal sites. Among the three AbOMVs, SuOMV elicited the highest level of protective immunity against A. baumannii infection, whether intramuscular or intranasal immunization, which was characterized by the expression of the most profound specific serum IgG or mucosal sIgA. Taken together, the preparation method had a significant effect on the yield, morphology, and composition of AbOMVs, that further influenced the protective effect against A. baumannii infection.

Subsurface wastewater infiltration systems (SWIS) are one of the important sources of nitrous oxide (N2O) production; understanding the biological processes and contributions of N2O will help control the amount of N2O produced. To quantitatively reveal the contribution of nitrification and denitrifiaction processes, 8 g potassium nitrate with 99.99 atom % 15N (i.e. 15N accounts for 99.99% of the total N) was dissolved in the influent (concentration: 3.3 g/L). Results showed that nitrification released more N2O within 0–12 h, accounting for 79.6 ± 2.4%. The denitrification process accounted for 88.5 ± 1.3% for N2O generation after the 12th hour. Thus, in order to effectively control the release of N2O, the denitrification process should be given more attention. The maximum release rate of N2O was 8.45 ± 0.8 mg/m2·h, which occurred near the end of the first wetting-drying cycle. Since then, peaks appeared periodically, mostly in the “rest” periods.

Thermochromic smart windows technology can intelligently regulate indoor solar radiation by changing indoor light transmittance in response to thermal stimulation, thus reducing energy consumption of the building. In recent years, with the development of new energy-saving materials and the combination with practical technology, energy-saving smart windows technology has received more and more attention from scientific research. Based on the summary of thermochromic smart windows by Yi Long research groups, this review described the applications of thermal responsive organic materials in smart windows, including poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) hydrogels, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogels, ionic liquids and liquid crystals. Besides, the mechanism of various organic materials and the properties of functional materials were also introduced. Finally, opportunities and challenges relating to thermochromic smart windows and prospects for future development are discussed.

The Mengyin diamondiferous kimberlite cluster in Shandong province is one of the three major sources of natural diamond in China, where many brown diamonds are mined, but the genesis of their color is still controversial. In this paper, studies including microscopic examination, optical properties of orthogonal polarization, low temperature photoluminescence spectra, infrared spectra, Raman spectra, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, luminescence of cathodoluminescence, and transmission electron microscopy have been carried out on the uncut brown diamonds and their slice samples to constrain on the color genesis of brown diamond from the Mengyin deposit. The results show that the brown color is dominantly caused by plastic deformation, and some samples are also caused by non-deformation-related defects and inclusions.

Modulation of the magnetic anisotropy by the electric field in epitaxial Fe3O4/PMN–PT multiferroic heterostructure is studied, which shows that the coercive field of Fe3O4 thin films can be decreased from 368 to 113 Oe by applying an electric field in PMN–PT [011] direction. Meanwhile, most shift of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) field Hr ( $ \Delta {H_{{\rm r},[01\bar{1}]}} $ ) can reach up to −483 Oe by applying an external electric field. The giant shift of Hr from 251 to 9681 Oe is obtained as the sample rotated from θ = 90° (H // $ [{01\bar{1}} ] $ to θ = 0° (H // [100]) when the electric field was applied in Fe3O4/PMN–PT heterostructure.

Background/Aims: Patient selection is critically important in improving the outcomes of liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma. The aim of the current study was to identify biochemical measures that could affect patient prognosis after liver transplantation. Methods: A total of 119 patients receiving liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma were used to construct a model for predicting recurrence. The results were validated using an independent sample of 109 patients from independent hospitals. All subjects in both cohorts met the Hangzhou criteria. Results: Analysis of the discovery cohort revealed an association of recurrence with preoperative fibrinogen and AFP levels. A mathematical model was developed for predicting probability of recurrence within 5 years: Y = logit(P) = -4.595 + 0.824 ×fibrinogen concentration (g/L) + 0.641 × AFP score (1 for AFP 400ng/ml). At a cutoff score of -0.85, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.819 in predicting recurrence (vs. 0.655 when using the Milan criteria). In the validation cohort, this model had reasonable performance in predicting 5-year overall survival (68.8% vs. 28.1% in using the -0.85 cutoff, p< 0.001) and disease-free survival (65.7% vs. 25.9%, p< 0.001). AIM: To explore the clinical feature and genetic etiology of a Chinese Knobloch syndrome family. METHODS: Ocular examinations and magnetic resonance imagings (MRIs) were performed on the family. Whole exome sequencing was conducted on the two patients. Sanger sequencing was utilized to validate the presence of variation in the family as well as in 100 normal controls. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the expression level of COL18A1 in peripheral blood lymphocytes of the patients and normal carriers. RESULTS: The affected subjects presented with vision loss, exotropia, cataracts, retinal detachment, and other complications. A homozygous c.4759_4760delCT (p.Leu1587ValfsX72) mutation (rs398122391) in COL18A1 was identified in the two patients, cosegregating with the phenotypes, and did not be detected in 100 normal controls. This mutation caused significant decreased expression of COL18A1 mRNA in the patients. CONCLUSION: The findings strongly indicate that this mutation is the disease-causing mutation. Moreover, this is the first Knobloch syndrome pedigree reported in the Chinese population.

Background/Aims: Retinal Müller cells could be induced to differentiate into retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), but RGCs derived from Müller cells have defects in axon growth, leading to a defect in signal conduction. In this study we aimed to explore the role of miR-124 in axon growth of RGCs derived from Müller cells. Methods: Müller cells were isolated from rat retina and induced to dedifferentiate into retinal stem cells. The stem cells were infected by PGC-FU-Atoh7-GFP lentivirus and then transfected with miR-124 or anti-miR-124, and the length of axon was compared. Furthermore, the cells were injected into the eyes of rat chronic ocular hypertension glaucoma model and axon growth in vivo was examined. The targeting of CoREST by miR-124 was detected by luciferase assay. Results: In retinal stem cells, the length of axon was 1,792±64.54 µm in miR-124 group, 509±21.35 µm in control group, and only 87.9±9.24 µm in anti-miR-124 group. In rat model, miR-124 promoted axon growth of RGCs differentiated from retinal stem cells. Furthermore, we found that miR-124 negatively regulated CoREST via directly targeting the binding site in CoREST 3′ UTR. Conclusions: We provide the first evidence that miR-124 regulates axon growth of RGCs derived from Müller cells, and miR-124 has translational potential for gene therapy of glaucoma.

Background: Accumulating documents have demonstrated that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play critical roles in tumorigenesis. As an lncRNA, nuclear-enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1) has been identified to be involved in the progression of many types of cancers. However, the biological function of NEAT1 in cervical cancer is not fully investigated. The aim of this study was to disclose the specific biological function of lncRNA NEAT1 in cervical cancer progression. Methods: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was utilized to identify the expression of lncRNA NEAT1 in the cervical cancer tissues and cell lines. All cervical cancer samples used in this study were collected from the Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between September 2012 and September 2017. The correlation between NEAT1 expression and the overall survival rate of cervical cancer patients was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier analysis. The effects of NEAT1 knockdown or overexpression on cell proliferation were tested by performing MTT assays and colony formation assays. Transwell assays were conducted to detect the migratory ability of cervical cancer cells, in which NEAT1 was silenced or overexpressed. Western blotting was utilized to validate whether NEAT1 promotes cervical cancer progression through activating PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. Results: High expression of NEAT1 predicted poor prognosis of cervical cancer patients (χ2 = 0.735, P = 0.005). Knockdown of NEAT1 decreased the number of colonies in CaSki cell from 136.667 ± 13.503 to 71.667 ± 7.506 (t = −18.76, P = 0.003) and decreased the number of colonies in HeLa cell from 128.667 ± 13.317 to 65.667 ± 7.024 (t = −5.54, P = 0.031). However, overexpression of NEAT1 increased the number of colonies in SiHa cell from 84.667 ± 12.014 to 150.667 ± 18.037 (t = 7.27, P = 0.018). Knockdown of NEAT1 decreased the migratory number of CaSki cell from 100.333 ± 9.866 to 58.333 ± 5.859 (t = −8.08, P = 0.015) and reduced the migratory number in HeLa cell from 123.667 ± 12.097 to 67.667 ± 7.095 (t = −6.03, P = 0.026). Overexpression of NEAT1 increased the migratory number of SiHa cell from 127.333 ± 16.042 to 231.333 ± 31.786 (t = 4.92, P = 0.039). Conclusion: NEAT1 may exert oncogenic function in cervical cancer and serve as a novel therapeutic target for cervical cancer.

Background: Liver dysfunction is common in pregnancy but its association with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth (PTB) remains unclear. Methods: A prospective cohort of HBV-infected or uninfected pregnant women attending antenatal care was recruited at Nantong Maternal and Child Health Hospital between January 1, 2012, and June 30, 2016. Liver function tests (LFTs) were monitored through pregnancy. The primary outcomes were PTB and very PTB (delivery prior 37 and 32 weeks' gestation respectively). Poisson regression was used to estimate adjusted risk ratios (RR) for women with HBV infection and LFT abnormalities. Results: Among 36,755 pregnant women (1,113 HBV carriers and 35,642 non-HBV subjects), 3,519 (9.57%) had abnormal LFTs. The commonest cause for liver dysfunction during pregnancy was non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD, 51.3%). Abnormal aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and two folds upper limit of normal total bilirubin (RR and 95%CI: 2.73, 1.30–5.76; 2.24, 1.35–3.31; 2.01, 1.22–3.31 respectively), rather than HBsAg positivity, were identified as independent risk factors for preterm birth. Besides, GGT abnormality was associated with increased risk of very PTB. Conclusions: We suggest that surveillance of LFTs among pregnant women should be warranted, given the increased risk of PTB.

Background/Aims: The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of long non-coding RNA-MALAT1 (LncRNA-MALAT1) on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) apoptosis mediated by the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in rats with glaucoma. Methods: RGCs were isolated and cultured, and monoclonal antibodies (anti-rat Thy-1, Brn3a and RBPMS) were examined by immunocytochemistry. An overexpression vector MALAT1-RNA activation (RNAa), gene knockout vector MALAT1-RNA interference (RNAi), and control vector MALAT1-negative control (NC) were constructed. A chronic high intraocular pressure (IOP) rat model of glaucoma was established by episcleral vein cauterization. The RGCs were divided into the RGC control, RGC pressure, RGC pressure + MALAT1-NC, RGC pressure + MALAT1-RNAi and RGC pressure + MALAT1-RNAa groups. Sixty Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into the normal, high IOP, high IOP + MALAT1-NC, high IOP + MALAT1-RNAa and high IOP + MALAT1-RNAi groups. qRT-PCR and western blotting were used to detect the expression levels of LncRNA-MALAT1 and PI3K/Akt. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) and flow cytometry were used to detect RGC apoptosis. Results: Immunocytochemistry revealed that the cultured RGCs reached 90% purity. Compared with the RGC pressure + MALAT1-NC group, the RGC pressure + MALAT1-RNAa group exhibited elevated expression levels of MALAT1, lower total protein levels of PI3K and Akt and decreased RGC apoptosis, while these expression levels were reversed in the RGC pressure + MALAT1-RNAi group. RGC numbers and PI3K/Akt expression levels in the high IOP model groups were lower than those in the normal group. In the high IOP + MALAT1-RNAa group, the mRNA and protein expression levels of PI3K/Akt were reduced but higher than those in the other three high IOP model groups. Additionally, RGC numbers in the high IOP + MALAT1-RNAa group were lower than those in the normal group but higher than those in the other three high IOP model groups. Conclusion: Our study provides evidence that LncRNA-MALAT1 could inhibit RGC apoptosis in glaucoma through activation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

The concentration of total nitrogen (TN) is reported to vary between 20 and 35 mg/L in domestic wastewater. In raw wastewater, ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) is the main nitrogen form, accounting for 70%–82% of the TN concentration. Organic nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen (NO2−-N), and nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) are present as well. For years, due to the lack of regulatory limits on nitrogen concentration in surface waters, nitrogen from secondary effluent has posed a significant threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. Researchers have made substantial efforts to reduce the nitrogen concentration in secondary effluent. As a kind of advanced wastewater treatment technology, the subsurface infiltration (SI) system has been widely used, owing to its advantages, which include low operation cost, easy maintenance, and low energy consumption. This review discusses the fate of various forms of nitrogen in SI treatment, including organic nitrogen, NH4+-N, NO2−-N, and NO3−-N. Major biological processes involved in nitrogen removal and the main factors influencing its transformation are suggested. Finally, it is shown that ammonification followed by nitrification-denitrification plays a major role in nitrogen removal. Further research needs to focus on the emission characteristics of gaseous nitrogen (generated from the nitrification, denitrification, and completely autotrophic nitrogen-removal over nitrite (CANON) processes) with respect to their greenhouse effects.

AIM: To introduce a novel approach in removal of anterior chamber angle foreign body (ACFB) using a prism contact lens and 23-gauge foreign body forceps. METHODS: Data of 42 eyes of 42 patients who had undergone removal of ACFB using a prism contact lens and 23-gauge foreign body forceps from January 2008 to October 2013 were collected and analyzed. Twenty eyes in group A received the conventional approach by using toothed forceps through corneal limbus incision, and 22 eyes in group B underwent the novel method through the opposite corneal limbus incision. RESULTS: The success rate of ACFB once removal was 75% (15/20) in group A, and 100% (22/22) in group B. The stability of the surrounding rock masses of underground powerhouses is always emphasized during the construction period. With the general trends toward large-scale, complex geological conditions and the rapid construction progress of underground powerhouses, deformation and failure issues of the surrounding rock mass can emerge, putting the safety of construction and operation in jeopardy and causing enormous economic loss. To solve these problems, an understanding of the origins and key affecting factors is required. Based on domestic large-scale underground powerhouse cases in the past two decades, key factors affecting the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock mass are summarized in this paper. Among these factors, the two most fundamental factors are the rock mass properties and in situ stress, which impart tremendous impacts on surrounding rock mass stability in a number of cases. Excavation is a prerequisite of surrounding rock mass failure and support that is classified as part of the construction process and plays a pivotal role in preventing and arresting deformation and failure. Additionally, the layout and structure of the powerhouse are consequential. The interrelation and interaction of these factors are discussed at the end of this paper. The results can hopefully advance the understanding of the deformation and failure of surrounding rock masses and provide a reference for design and construction with respect to hydroelectric underground powerhouses.

The rock mass failure induced by high in-situ stresses during the excavation of deep diversion tunnels is one of the key problems in the construction of the Jinping II Hydropower Station. Based on the results of acoustic wave tests and rockburst statistical analysis conducted, this study focuses on the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) and rockburst events in the Jinping II diversion tunnels excavated using the tunnel boring machine (TBM) method and the drilling-blasting method. The unloading failure mechanism and the rockburst induced by the two different excavation methods were compared and analyzed. The results indicate that, due to the different stress adjustment processes, the degree of damage to the surrounding rock mass excavated using the drilling-blasting method was more serious than that using the TBM method. The EDZ induced by the TBM was usually distributed evenly along the edge of the excavation surface. While, the drilling-blasting method was more likely to cause stress concentration, resulting in a deeper EDZ in local areas. However, the TBM excavation method can cause other problems in high in-situ stress areas, such as strong rockbursts. The drilling-blasting method is more prone to structural controlled failure of the surrounding rock mass, while the TBM method would induce high stress concentration near the edge of excavation and more widely distributed of stress adjustment induced failure. As a result, the scale and frequency of the rockburst events generated by the TBM were significantly greater than those caused by the drilling-blasting method during the excavation of Jinping II diversion tunnels. The TBM method should be used carefully for tunnel excavation in high in-situ stress areas with burial depths of greater than 2000 m. If it is necessary to use the TBM method after a comprehensive selection, it is suggested that equipment adaptability improvement, advanced prediction, and prediction technology be used.

Over fifty percent of the people around the world is infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which is the main cause of gastric diseases such as chronic gastritis and stomach cancer. H. pylori adhesin A (HpaA), which is a surface-located lipoprotein, is essential for bacterial colonization in the gastric mucosa. HpaA had been proposed to be a promising vaccine candidate against H. pylori infection. However, the effect of non-lipidated recombinant HpaA (rHpaA) to stimulate immune response was not very ideal, and the protective effect against H. pylori infection was also limited. Here, we hypothesized that low immunogenicity of rHpaA may attribute to lacking the immunostimulatory properties endowed by the lipid moiety. In this study, two novel lipopeptides, LP1 and LP2, which mimic the terminal structure of the native HpaA (nHpaA), were synthesized and TLR2 activation activity was confirmed in vitro. To investigate whether two novel lipopeptides could improve the protective effect of rHpaA against the infection of H. pylori, groups of mice were immunized either intramuscularly or intranasally with rHpaA together with LP1 or LP2. Compared with rHpaA alone, the bacterial colonization of the mice immunized with rHpaA plus LP2 via intranasal route was significantly decreased and the expression levels of serum IgG2a, IFN-γ, and IL-17 cytokines in spleen lymphocyte culture supernatant increased obviously, indicating that the enhanced protection of LP2 may be associated with elevated specific Th1 and Th17 responses. In conclusion, LP2 has been shown to improve the protective effect of rHpaA against H. pylori infection, which may be closely related to its ability in activating TLR2 by mimicking the terminal structure of nHpaA.

In order to enhance the hydraulic loading rate (HLR) of a subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS) used in treating domestic sewage, the intermittent operation mode was employed in the SWIS. The results show that the intermittent operation mode contributes to the improvement of the HLR and the pollutant removal rate. When the wetting-drying ratio (RWD) was 1.0, the pollutant removal rate increased by (13.6 ± 0.3)% for NH3-N, (20.7 ± 1.1)% for TN, (18.6 ± 0.4)% for TP, (12.2 ± 0.5)% for BOD, (10.1 ± 0.3)% for COD, and (36.2 ± 1.2)% for SS, compared with pollutant removal rates under the continuous operation mode. The pollutant removal rate declined with the increase of the HLR.
