Let $q=p^n$ be an odd prime power and let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. Let $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$ be the group of all multiplicative characters of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\chi$ be a generator of $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$. In this paper, we investigate arithmetic properties of certain cyclotomic matrices involving nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For example, let $s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_{(q-1)/2}$ be all nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For any integer $1\le r\le q-2$, define the matrix $$B_{q,2}(\chi^r):=\left[\chi^r(s_i+s_j)+\chi^r(s_i-s_j)\right]_{1\le i,j\le (q-1)/2}.$$ We prove that if $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$, then $$\det (B_{q,2}(\chi^r))=\prod_{0\le k\le (q-3)/2}J_q(\chi^r,\chi^{2k})= \begin{cases} (-1)^{\frac{q-3}{4}}{\bf i}^nG_q(\chi^r)^{\frac{q-1}{2}}/\sqrt{q} & \mbox{if}\ r\equiv 1\pmod 2,\\ G_q(\chi^r)^{\frac{q-1}{2}}/q & \mbox{if}\ r\equiv 0\pmod 2, \end{cases}$$ where $J_q(\chi^r,\chi^{2k})$ and $G_q(\chi^r)$ are the Jacobi sum and the Gauss sum over $\mathbb{F}_q$ respectively., Comment: 15 pages

Motivated by the recent work of Zhi-Wei Sun on determinants involving the Legendre symbol, in this paper, we study some matrices concerning subgroups of finite fields. For example, let $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$ be an odd prime power and let $\phi$ be the unique quadratic multiplicative character of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. If set $\{s_1,\cdots,s_{(q-1)/2}\}=\{x^2:\ x\in\mathbb{F}_q\setminus\{0\}\}$, then we prove that $$\det\left[t+\phi(s_i+s_j)+\phi(s_i-s_j)\right]_{1\le i,j\le (q-1)/2}=\left(\frac{q-1}{2}t-1\right)q^{\frac{q-3}{4}}.$$ This confirms a conjecture of Zhi-Wei Sun.

Let $p$ be an odd prime and $x$ be an indeterminate. Recently, Z.-W. Sun proposed the following conjecture: $$\det\left[x+\left(\frac{j-i}{p}\right)\right]_{0\le i,j\le \frac{p-1}{2}}=\begin{cases} (\frac{2}{p})pb_px-a_p & \mbox{if}\ p\equiv 1\pmod4, 1 & \mbox{if}\ p\equiv 3\pmod4, \end{cases}$$ where $a_p$ and $b_p$ are rational numbers related to the fundamental unit and class number of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$. In this paper, we confirm the above conjecture of Sun based on Vsemirnov's decomposition of Chapman's "evil determinant".

Inspired by the works of L. Carlitz and Z.-W. Sun on cyclotomic matrices, in this paper, we investigate certain cyclotomic matrices involving Gauss sums over finite fields, which can be viewed as finite field analogues of certain matrices related to the Gamma function. For example, let $q=p^n$ be an odd prime power with $p$ prime and $n\in\mathbb{Z}^+$. Let $\zeta_p=e^{2\pi{\bf i}/p}$ and let $\chi$ be a generator of the group of all mutiplicative characters of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this paper, we study the well-posedness of classical solutions to a two-phase flow model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations coupled with the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations via a drag forcing term. We consider the case that the fluid densities may contain a vacuum, and the viscosities are density-dependent functions. Under suitable assumptions on the initial data, we show that the finite-energy (i.e., in the inhomogeneous Sobolev space) classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of this coupled system do not exist for any small time.

In 2019, Zhi-Wei Sun posed an interesting conjecture on certain determinants with Legendre symbol entries. In this paper, by using the arithmetic properties of $p$-th cyclotomic field and the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$, we confirm this conjecture.

We revisit the problem of proving the incompressible limit for the compressible porous media equation with Newtonian drift and growth. The question is motivated by models of living tissues development including chemotaxis. We extend the problem, already treated by the authors and several other contributions, in using a simplified approach, in treating dimensions two or higher, and in incorporating the pressure driven growth term. We also complete the analysis with stronger $L^4$ estimates on the pressure gradient. The major difficulty is to prove the strong convergence of the pressure gradient which is obtained here by a new observation on an algebraic relation involving the pressure gradient for weak limits.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviors of solutions to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes-Vlasov system in $\mathbb{R}^{3}\times\mathbb{R}^{3}$, where the initial fluid density is allowed to vanish. We establish the uniform bound of the macroscopic density associated with the distribution function and prove the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem with vacuum for either small initial energy or large viscosity coefficient. The uniform boundedness and the presence of vacuum enable us to show that as the time evolves, the fluid velocity decays, while the distribution function concentrates towards a Dirac measure in velocity centred at $0$, with an exponential rate. In order to overcome the degeneracy in the momentum equations, we develop an energy argument based on higher order functional inequalities designed for fluid-particle coupled structures.

In this paper, we establish the local-in-time well-posedness of classical solutions to the vacuum free boundary problem of the viscous Saint-Venant system for shallow water in two dimensions. The solutions are shown to possess higher-order regularities uniformly up to the vacuum free boundary, although the depth degenerates as a singularity of the distance to the vacuum boundary. Since the momentum equations degenerate in both the dissipation and time evolution, there are difficulties in constructing approximate solutions by the Galerkin's scheme and gaining higher-order regularities uniformly up to the vacuum boundary for the weak solution. To construct the approximate solutions, we introduce some degenerate-singular elliptic operator, whose eigenfunctions form an orthogonal basis of the projection space. Then the high-order regularities on the weak solution are obtained by using some carefully designed higher-order weighted energy functional.

Motivated by the works of L. Carlitz, R. Chapman and Z.-W. This is a finite analogue of $$\det [B(i,j)]_{1\le i,j\le n}=(-1)^{\frac{n(n-1)}{2}}\prod_{r=0}^{n-1}\frac{(r!)^3}{(n+r)!},$$ where $B$ is the Beta function. In this paper, motivated by the work of Chapman, Vsemirnov and Sun et al., we investigate some arithmetic properties of the generalized Legendre matrices over finite fields. For example, letting $a_1,\cdots,a_{(q-1)/2}$ be all non-zero squares in the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ which contains $q$ elements with $2\nmid q$, we give the explicit value of $D_{(q-1)/2}=\det[(a_i+a_j)^{(q-3)/2}]_{1\le i,j\le (q-1)/2}$. The formation path to ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) with black hole (BH) accretors is still unclear. In the classical formation scenario, it is difficult to eject the massive envelope of the progenitor star of the BH via common envelope process. Given that some neutron stars (NSs) in binary systems evidently have birth masses close to $\sim 2.0\;M_\odot$, we explore here the possibility that BH-UCXBs may form via accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of accreting NSs, assuming that these previously evolved in LMXBs to masses all the way up to the maximum limit of a NS. We demonstrate this formation path by modelling a few cases of NS-UCXBs with initial NS masses close to the maximum mass of a NS that evolve into BH-UCXBs after the NS accretes material from its He~WD companion. We follow the evolution of the post-AIC BH-UCXB and, based on simple arguments, we anticipate that there is about one BH-UCXB with an AIC origin and a He~WD donor within the current sample of known UCXBs and that 2--5 such BH-UCXBs may be detected in gravitational waves by LISA. In addition, we find that the X-ray luminosity of NS-UCXBs near their orbital period minimum exceeds $\sim 10^{39}\;{\rm erg\;s^{-1}}$ and thus such systems may appear as ultraluminous X-ray sources., Comment: ApJ accepted, 12 pages, 3 figures

In this paper, we study some topics concerning the additive decompositions of the set $D_k$ of all $k$th power residues modulo a prime $p$. For example, given a positive integer $k\ge2$, we prove that $$\lim_{x\rightarrow+\infty}\frac{B(x)}{\pi(x)}=0,$$ where $\pi(x)$ is the number of primes $p\le x$ and $B(x)$ denotes the cardinality of the set $$\{p\le x: p\equiv1\pmod k; D_k\ \text{has a non-trivial 2-additive decomposition}\}.$$

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of the multi-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-Euler system for two-phase flow motion, which consists of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the isothermal compressible Euler equations coupled with each other through a relaxation drag force. We first establish the local existence and uniqueness of the strong solution for general initial data in a critical homogeneous Besov space, and then prove the global existence of the solution if the initial data is a small perturbation of the equilibrium state. Moreover, under the additional condition that the low-frequency part of the initial perturbation also belongs to another Besov space with lower regularity, we obtain the optimal time-decay rates of the global solution toward the equilibrium state. These results imply that the relaxation drag force and the viscosity dissipation affect regularity properties and long time behaviors of solutions for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Euler system., Comment: 41pages

Mass transfer stability is an essential issue in binary evolution. Ge et al. studied critical mass ratios for dynamically stable mass transfer by establishing adiabatic mass loss model and found that the donor stars on the giant branches tend to be more stable than that based on the composite polytropic stellar model. We would investigate the influence of mass transfer stability on the formation and properties of DWD populations. We performed a series of binary population synthesis, where the critical mass ratios from adiabatic mass loss model (Ge's model) and that from the composite polytropic model are adopted, respectively. For Ge's model, most of the DWDs are produced from the stable non-conservative Roche lobe overflow plus common envelope (CE) ejection channel (RL+CE channel) regardless of the CE ejection efficiency $\alpha_{CE}$. While the results of the polytropic model strongly depend on the adopted value of $\alpha_{ CE}$. We find DWDs produced from the RL+CE channel have comparable WD masses and the mass ratio distribution peaks at around 1. Based on the magnitude-limited sample of DWDs, the space densities for the detectable DWDs and those with extremely low-mass WD (ELM WD) companions in Ge's model is $1347$ and $473 kpc^{-3}$, respectively, close to observations. While the polytropic model overpredicts space density of DWDs by a factor of about $2-3$. We also find that the results of DWD merger rate distribution in Ge's model reproduce the observations better than that of the polytropic model, and the merger rate of DWDs with ELM WD companions in the Galaxy is about $1.8\times 10^{-3} yr^{-1}$ in Ge's model, which is comparable to the observation estimation. This paper presents a novel 3-D full electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code called JefiPIC, which uses Jefimenko's equations as the electromagnetic (EM) field solver through a full-space integration method. Leveraging the power of state-of-the-art graphic processing units (GPUs), we have made the challenging integral task of PIC simulations achievable. Our proposed code offers several advantages by utilizing the integral method. Firstly, it offers a natural solution for modeling non-neutral plasmas without the need for pre-processing such as solving Poisson's equation. Secondly, it eliminates the requirement for designing elaborate boundary layers to absorb fields and particles. Thirdly, it maintains the stability of the plasma simulation regardless of the time step chosen. Lastly, it does not require strict charge-conservation particle-to-grid apportionment techniques or electric field divergence amendment algorithms, which are commonly used in finite-difference time-domain (FDTD)-based PIC simulations. To validate the accuracy and advantages of our code, we compared the evolutions of particles and fields in different plasma systems simulated by three other codes. Our results demonstrate that the combination of Jefimenko's equations and the PIC method can produce accurate particle distributions and EM fields in open-boundary plasma systems. Additionally, our code is able to accomplish these computations within an acceptable execution time. The evolution and stability of mass transfer of CO+He WD binaries are not well understood. Observationally they may emerge as AM CVn binaries and are important gravitational wave (GW) emitters. In this work, we have modeled the evolution of double WD binaries with accretor masses of $0.50 - 1.30\;M_{\odot}$ and donor masses of $0.17\; - 0.45\;M_{\odot}$ using the detailed stellar evolution code MESA. We find that the evolution of binaries with same donor masses but different accretor masses is very similar and binaries with same accretor masses but larger He donor masses have larger maximum mass transfer rates and smaller minimum orbital periods. We also demonstrate that the GW signal from AM CVn binaries can be detected by space-borne GW observatories, such as LISA, TianQin. And there is a linear relation between the donor mass and gravitational wave frequency during mass transfer phase. In our calculation, all binaries can have dynamically stable mass transfer, which is very different from previous studies. The threshold donor mass of Eddington-limited mass transfer for a given accretor WD mass is lower than previous studies. Assuming that a binary may enter common envelope if the mass transfer rate exceeds the maximum stable burning rate of He, we provide a new criterion for double WDs surviving mass transfer, which is below the threshold of Eddington-limit. Finally, we find that some systems with ONe WDs in our calculation may evolve into detached binaries consisting of neutron stars (NSs) and extremely low mass He WDs and further ultra-compact X-ray binaries., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The pointwise space-time behavior of the Green's function of the one-dimensional Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann (VMB) system is studied in this paper. It is shown that the Green's function consists of the macroscopic diffusive waves and Huygens waves with the speed $\pm \sqrt{5/3}$ at low-frequency, the hyperbolic waves with the speed $\pm 1$ at high-frequency, the singular kinetic and leading short waves, and the remaining term decaying exponentially in space and time. Note that these high-frequency hyperbolic waves are completely new and can not be observed for the Boltzmann equation and the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system. In addition, we establish the pointwise space-time estimate of the global solution to the nonlinear VMB system based on the Green's function. Compared to the Boltzmann equation and the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system, some new ideas are introduced to overcome the difficulties caused by the coupling effects of the transport of particles and the rotating of electro-magnetic fields, and investigate the new hyperbolic waves and singular leading short waves.
