The article discusses the history of transportation in Humboldt County, California, from the 1900s through the 1920s, by examining the career of the author's uncle, businessman and stage line owner Burr Peyton McConnaha II. McConnaha's development of the mercantile store, livery and mail contract services and freight hauling business the McConnaha Brothers Business in 1909 is discussed. An overview of the McConnaha Brothers Business, including its use of automobiles and horses for transportation purposes, the company's driver Bert Reed and its advertisements in Humboldt County newspapers, is also discussed.
