Abstract

OPERA is a long-baseline experiment designed to search for $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode. It was based at the INFN Gran Sasso laboratory (LNGS) and took data from 2008 to 2012 with the CNGS neutrino beam from CERN. After the discovery of $\nu_\tau$ appearance in 2015, with $5.1\sigma$ significance, the criteria to select $\nu_\tau$ candidates have been extended and a multivariate approach has been used for events identification. In this way the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of $\nu_\tau$ properties has been improved. Results are reported.

Abstract

The results of background measurements with the second version of the BOREXINO Counting Test Facility (CTF-II), installed in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory, were used to obtain limits on the instability of nucleons, bounded in nuclei, for decays into invisible channels ($inv$): disappearance, decays to neutrinos, etc. The approach consisted of a search for decays of unstable nuclides resulting from $N$ and $NN$ decays of parents $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C and $^{16}$O nuclei in the liquid scintillator and the water shield of the CTF. Due to the extremely low background and the large mass (4.2 ton) of the CTF detector, the most stringent (or competitive) up-to-date experimental bounds have been established: $��(n \to inv) > 1.8 \cdot 10^{25}$ y, $��(p \to inv) > 1.1 \cdot 10^{26}$ y, $��(nn \to inv) > 4.9 \cdot 10^{25}$ y and $��(pp \to inv) > 5.0 \cdot 10^{25}$ y, all at 90% C.L., 22 pages, 3 figures,submitted to Phys.Lett. Abstract

The prototype of the Borexino detector Counting Test Facility, located in the Gran-Sasso laboratory, has been used to obtain a bound on the stability of the electron. The new lower limit on the mean lifetime defined on 32.1 days of data set is τ ( e − → ν e + γ )⩾4.6×10 26 yr (90% c.l.).

Abstract

To investigate the spatiotemporal organisation of neuronal processes in an animal model using magnetoencephalography (MEG), a high temporal resolution (ms) and an appropriate spatial resolution of about 1 mm is necessary. With the aim of determining the localization error and the resolution power of high-resolution MEG systems, we developed a phantom capable of simulating the characteristics of animal models. The phantom enables us to variably position at least two magnetic field sources to within 0.1 mm. For source localization on the basis of the magnetic field data, a spatial filtering algorithm was used. The investigation of a 16-channel micro SQUID-MEG system with a current dipole orientated tangentially to the phantom surface produced the following localization data (min ... max, x, y--horizontal plane, z--depth); systematic localization error e(x) = 1.16 ... 1.67 mm, e(y) = -1.01 ... -1.28 mm, e(z) = -5.22 ... -7.64 mm, standard deviation of the individual measurements perpendicular to the dipole axis s(perp) = 0.05 ... 0.22 mm, along this axis s(long) = 0.20 ... 1.73 mm, in the depths sz = 0.17 ... 3.17 mm. The "goodness of fit" was > 95%. Separation of two dipoles was still possible for parallel dipoles at a distance apart of d(parallel) = 0.03 mm and for those oriented perpendicularly to each other at a distance apart of d(perp) = 0.10 mm. On the basis of these results we conclude that the MEG system can achieve a resolution sufficient to permit the investigation of neuronal microstructures. The spatial errors detected were related to sensor position in the cryostatic vessel as well as to external low-frequency noise.

Abstract

The results of background measurements with the prototype of the Borexino detector (CTF) have been used to obtain an upper bound on the neutrino magnetic moment, μ ν . The new upper limit for μ ν from pp and 7 Be solar neutrinos is (5.5×10 −10 ) μ B (90% c.l.) in the Standard Solar Model scenario. This is the first limit on μ ν obtained using sub-MeV neutrinos. The sensitivity of the prototype to the neutrino charge radius and the neutrino radiative decay are also presented.

14. Determination of Cross-Sections of Fast-Muon-Induced Reactions to Cosmogenic Radionuclides

Abstract

%NA54 %title\\ \\We propose to measure cross-sections for fast muon-induced production of radionuclides. Firstly to study the contribution of fast-muon-induced reactions to the in-situ production of cosmogenic radionuclides in the lithosphere. Concrete is used to simulate the rock and to generate a secondary particle shower. The reaction channels to be measured are: C to $^{10}$Be, O to $^{10}$Be and $^{14}$C, Si to $^{26}$Al, S to $^{26}$Al, Ca to $^{36}$Cl, Fe to $^{53}$Mn and $^{205}$Tl to $^{205}$Pb. The energy dependent cross-section can be described by one single parameter $\sigma_0$ and the energy dependence $\rm\overline{E}^{0.7}$ on the mean energy $\rm\overline{E}$. The irradiations of the targets is done at CERN. The produced radionuclides are measured by accelerator mass spectrometry in Munich and Zurich.\\ \\Secondly, muon induced signals can be a major source of background in experiments with low event rates located deep underground. We intent to study the produced radioactivity by fast-muon-induced reactions in a liquid scintillation detector. Our main interest is the measurement of the cross sections for $^{12}$C to $^{11}$C and $^{7}$Be. In addition we will study the produced radioactivity in targets of Saphire(Al$_2$O$_3$) and Cu for a cryogenic dark matter detector. \\ \\

Abstract

BOREXINO, a real-time device for low energy neutrino spectroscopy is nearing completion of construction in the underground laboratories at Gran Sasso, Italy (LNGS). The experiment's goal is the direct measurement of the flux of 7Be solar neutrinos of all flavors via neutrino-electron scattering in an ultra-pure scintillation liquid. Seeded by a series of innovations which were brought to fruition by large scale operation of a 4-ton test detector at LNGS, a new technology has been developed for BOREXINO. It enables sub-MeV solar neutrino spectroscopy for the first time. This paper describes the design of BOREXINO, the various facilities essential to its operation, its spectroscopic and background suppression capabilities and a prognosis of the impact of its results towards resolving the solar neutrino problem. BOREXINO will also address several other frontier questions in particle physics, astrophysics and geophysics.

Abstract

A large volume (4.8 m3) liquid scintillator detector has been running in Hall C of the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory since February 1995. This detector is called the “Counting Test Facility” (CTF). The main goal of the detector facility is the measurement of ultralow background levels in scintillators and the development of processes able to purify them at this level. The detector has been designed to have exceptional sensitivity using a variety of methods to identify backgrounds. With the CTF, records were achieved in the domain of low background large volume detectors. Limits of 3.5 ± 1.3 × 10−16 g/g and 4.4−1.2+1.5 × 10−16 g/g for the 238U and 232Th daughters, respectively, and 1.85 ± 0.13 ± 0.01 × 10−18 for the isotopic abundance of 14C relative to 12C were obtained. These results are very encouraging and point towards the feasibility of low energy, real time scintillation detectors for solar neutrinos, such as Borexino.

The prototype of the Borexino detector Counting Test Facility, located in the Gran-Sasso laboratory, has been used to obtain a bound on the stability of the electron. The new lower limit on the mean lifetime defined on 32.1 days of data set is τ(e−→νe+γ)⩾4.6×1026yr (90% c.l.).

Abstract

Recordings of event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related magnetic fields (ERMFs) were combined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study visual cortical activity in humans during spatial attention. While subjects attended selectively to stimulus arrays in one visual field, fMRI revealed stimulus-related activations in the contralateral primary visual cortex and in multiple extrastriate areas. ERP and ERMF recordings showed that attention did not affect the initial evoked response at 60-90 ms poststimulus that was localized to primary cortex, but a similarly localized late response at 140-250 ms was enhanced to attended stimuli. These findings provide evidence that the primary visual cortex participates in the selective processing of attended stimuli by means of delayed feedback from higher visual-cortical areas.

Abstract

Various prefrontal cortical regions have been shown to be activated during emotional stimulation, whereas neurochemical mechanisms underlying emotional processing in the prefrontal cortex remain unclear. We therefore investigated the influence of the GABA-A potentiator lorazepam on prefrontal cortical emotional-motor spatio-temporal activation pattern in a combined functional magnetic resonance imaging/magnetoencephalography study. Lorazepam led to the reversal in orbito-frontal activation pattern, a shift of the early magnetic field dipole from the orbito-frontal to medial prefrontal cortex, and alterations in premotor/motor cortical function during negative and positive emotional stimulation. It is concluded that negative emotional processing in the orbito-frontal cortex may be modulated either directly or indirectly by GABA-A receptors. Such a modulation of orbito-frontal cortical emotional function by lorazepam has to be distinguished from its effects on cortical motor function as being independent from the kind of processing either emotional or nonemotional.

Abstract

Previous studies of visual search in humans using event-related potentials (ERPs) have revealed an ERP component called 'N2pc' (180-280 ms) that reflects the focusing of attention onto potential target items in the search array. The present study was designed to localize the neuroanatomical sources of this component by means of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings, which provide greater spatial precision than ERP recordings. MEG recordings were obtained with an array of 148 magnetometers from six normal adult subjects, one of whom was tested in multiple sessions so that both single-subject and group analyses could be performed. Source localization procedures revealed that the N2pc is composed of two distinct neural responses, an early parietal source (180-200 ms) and a later occipito-temporal source (220-240 ms). These findings are consistent with the proposal that parietal areas are used to initiate a shift of attention within a visual search array and that the focusing of attention is implemented by extrastriate areas of the occipital and inferior temporal cortex.

Abstract

The orbitofrontal cortex has been cytoarchitectonically and connectionally subdivided into a medial and a lateral part which are assumed to subserve distinct functions in emotional processing. However the exact spatiotemporal mechanisms of negative and positive emotional processing in medial and lateral orbitofrontal cortex remain unclear. We therefore investigated spatiotemporal orbitofrontal and prefrontal cortical activation patterns during emotional stimulation in a combined fMRI/MEG study. We investigated 10 healthy subjects, 5 women and 5 men. Positive and negative pictures from the International Affective Picture system (IAPS) were used for emotional stimulation, whereas neutral and gray pictures were taken as control conditions. fMRI/MEG measurements covered the whole frontal lobe and a time window between -2000 and +200 ms around motor responses (right index finger extension) associated with each picture. Positively and negatively correlated activities were determined in various prefrontal/frontal cortical regions in fMRI. Isocontour maps and single dipoles in MEG were analyzed in 50 ms time windows ranging from -2000 to +200 ms. Dipoles and fMR images were mapped on three-dimensional anatomical MRI so that anatomical localization of single dipoles and regional fMRI activity could be compared. Both negative and positive emotional conditions differed from non-emotional control conditions by strong orbitofrontal and lateral prefrontal activation as well as by the presence of early magnetic fields (-1700 to +1100 ms). Negative emotional processing was characterized by strong medial orbitofrontal activation and earlier (-1700 ms), stronger and more medially oriented orbitofrontal dipoles. In contrast positive emotional processing showed a rather strong activation in lateral prefrontal cortex with later (-1500 ms), weaker and more laterally oriented orbito and prefrontal dipoles. Negative emotional processing can be characterized by strong and early medial orbitofrontal cortical activation, whereas positive emotional processing showed rather later and weaker activation in lateral orbitofrontal/prefrontal cortex. Such a functional dissociation between medial and lateral orbito-frontal/prefrontal cortex during negative and positive emotional processing lends further support to the assumption of a functional subdivision in the orbitofrontal cortex.

Abstract

To investigate the spatiotemporal organisation of neuronal processes in an animal model using magnetoencephalography (MEG), a high temporal resolution (ms) and an appropriate spatial resolution of about 1 mm is necessary. With the aim of determining the localization error and the resolution power of high-resolution MEG systems, we developed a phantom capable of simulating the characteristics of animal models. The phantom enables us to variably position at least two magnetic field sources to within 0.1 mm. For source localization on the basis of the magnetic field data, a spatial filtering algorithm was used. The investigation of a 16-channel micro SQUID-MEG system with a current dipole orientated tangentially to the phantom surface produced the following localization data (min ... max, x, y--horizontal plane, z--depth); systematic localization error e(x) = 1.16 ... 1.67 mm, e(y) = -1.01 ... -1.28 mm, e(z) = -5.22 ... -7.64 mm, standard deviation of the individual measurements perpendicular to the dipole axis s(perp) = 0.05 ... 0.22 mm, along this axis s(long) = 0.20 ... 1.73 mm, in the depths sz = 0.17 ... 3.17 mm. The "goodness of fit" was > 95%. Separation of two dipoles was still possible for parallel dipoles at a distance apart of d(parallel) = 0.03 mm and for those oriented perpendicularly to each other at a distance apart of d(perp) = 0.10 mm. On the basis of these results we conclude that the MEG system can achieve a resolution sufficient to permit the investigation of neuronal microstructures. The spatial errors detected were related to sensor position in the cryostatic vessel as well as to external low-frequency noise.
