We investigated the real-world burden of liver-related clinical events among adult and pediatric patients with AATD in the USA.Methods: This was a retrospective, observational analysis of administrative claims data from the IQVIA PharMetrics® Plus and Ambulatory Electronic Medical Records databases from 2011 to 2022. Patients had a diagnosis of liver and/or lung disease with ≥ 180 days of continuous enrollment in the IQVIA PharMetrics Plus database before and ≥ 90 days after their first diagnosis. Follow-up time was assigned to the AATD with liver disease health state or AATD with both liver and lung disease health state (for patients aged ≥ 18 years only). Baseline demographic characteristics and liver-related clinical events of interest were reported.Results: Of 5136 eligible patients, 771 adult and 123 pediatric patients contributed time to the AATD with liver disease health state; 541 adults contributed time to the AATD with both liver and lung disease health state. Among adults, patients with both liver and lung disease had higher rates of liver-related clinical events than patients with liver disease alone. Ascites was the most frequently observed clinical event among adults in both health states, and the median time to the composite of any liver-related clinical event was 26.5 days among all adults combined. Across all pediatric age groups, ascites, gastrointestinal bleed and hepatic encephalopathy were more common than spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, but median time to liver-related clinical event varied by age group at index date and type of event. No liver transplantations occurred in patients aged 6– 17 years.Conclusion: Diagnosed AATD with liver disease carries a substantial burden on adult and pediatric patients; new treatment options are warranted to avoid disease progression to decompensating events.Keywords: alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, genetic disease, liver disease, lung disease, pediatric, adult

Abstract

We performed high-magnetic-field magnetization, polarization, and ultrasonic measurements in Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$ to investigate field-induced multiferroic properties arising from a cross-correlation between electric dipoles and electric quadrupoles in addition to cross-correlation between magnetic dipoles and electric dipoles. Magnetization $M$ shows saturation behavior above 20 T for several magnetic field directions, however, electric polarization $P_c$ exhibits an increase, and elastic constants show a softening above 20 T. Based on quantum states with a crystalline electric field for the $D_{2d}$ point group and $d$-$p$ hybridization between Cu-$3d$ and O-$2p$ electrons, we confirmed that the matrix of an electric dipole $P_z$ was proportional to that of an electric quadrupole $O_{xy}$. Furthermore, considering the spin-orbit coupling of $3d$ electrons and the Zeeman effect, we showed that $P_z$ and $O_{xy}$ simultaneously exhibited field-induced responses. These findings indicate that the orbital degrees of freedom, in addition to the spin degrees of freedom, contribute to the high-field multiferroicity in Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, accepted in Phys. Abstract

In this article, we report on inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a quasi-1D antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under a transverse magnetic field applied along the (0,1,0) direction. Combining results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments, analytical analysis, and numerical simulations, we precisely studied the $E_8$ excitations appearing in the whole Brillouin zone at $B_c^{1D}\approx 4.7$ T. The energy scan at $Q=(0,0,2)$ reveals a match between the data and the theoretical prediction of energies of multiple $E_8$ excitations. Furthermore, dispersions of the lightest three $E_8$ particles have been clearly observed, confirming the existence of the $E_8$ particles in BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. Our results lay down a concrete ground to systematically study the physics of the exotic $E_8$ particles., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Magnets, with topologically-nontrivial Dirac/Weyl points, have recently attracted significant attention owing to the unconventional physical properties, such as large anomalous Hall effects. However, they typically have a high carrier density and complicated band structure near the Fermi energy. In this study, we report degenerate magnetic semiconductor EuMg$_2$Bi$_2$, which exhibits a single valley at the $\Gamma$ point, where the field-tunable Weyl points form via the magnetic exchange interaction with the local Eu spins. By the high-field measurements on high-quality single crystals, we observed the quantum oscillations in resistivity, elastic constant, and surface impedance, which enabled us to determine the position of the Fermi energy. In combination with the first-principles calculation, we revealed that the Weyl points are located in the vicinity of the Fermi energy when the Eu spins are fully polarized. Furthermore, we observed large anomalous Hall effect (Hall angle $\Theta_{\mathrm{AH}}\sim0.07$) in the forced ferromagnetic phase, which is consistent with this field variation of band structure., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Radiation monitoring at high energy proton accelerators poses a considerable challenge due to the complexity of the encountered stray radiation fields. These environments comprise a wide variety of different particle types and span from fractions of electron-volts up to several terra electron-volts. As a consequence the use of Monte Carlo simulation programs like FLUKA is indispensable to obtain appropriate field-specific calibration factors. At many locations of the LHC a large contribution to the particle fluence is expected to originate from high-energy neutrons and thus, benchmark experiments with mono-energetic neutron beams are of high importance to verify the aforementioned detector response calculations. This paper summarizes the results of a series of benchmark experiments with quasi mono-energetic neutrons of 100, 140, 200, 250 and 392 MeV that have been carried out at RCNP - Osaka University, during several campaigns between 2006 and 2014.

Abstract

The effect of pressure ($P$) on magnetic susceptibility of CsCuCl$_3$ was examined in magnetic fields ($\rm \mu_0$$H$) of up to 51 T using a proximity detector oscillator (PDO), and the $H$-$P$ phase diagram of CsCuCl$_3$ was constructed over the saturation field ($H_{\rm sat}$). We found that, with increasing $P$, $H_{\rm sat}$ increases and the uud-phase that appeared at $P$ = 0.7 GPa widened. Based on comparison between the experimental and calculated $H$-$P$ phase diagrams, the Y-phase was predicted to appear above 1.7 GPa. The interchain antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the $ab$-plane was evaluated and found to increase with increasing $P$, which is consistent with a previous study under high pressure [D. Yamamoto {\it et al.}, Nat. Commun. {\bf 12}, 4263 (2021).]. Moreover, an anomaly was observed below $P$ = 0.6 GPa just below $H_{\rm sat}$ and might be a new phase transition derived from nonlinear response caused by the PDO technique., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present a model compound with a spin-1/2 spatially anisotropic frustrated square lattice, in which three antiferromagnetic interactions and one ferromagnetic interaction are competing. We observe an unconventional gradual increase in the low-temperature magnetization curve reminiscent of the quantum critical behavior between gapped and gapless phases. In addition, the specific heat and electron spin resonance signals indicate one-dimensional characteristics. These results demonstrate quantum critical behavior associated with one dimensionalization caused by frustrated interactions in the spin-1/2 spatially anisotropic square lattice., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on a quasi-1D antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under transverse field along the [010] direction. The scaling behavior of the spin-lattice relaxation rate above the N\'{e}el temperatures unveils a 1D quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c^{1D}\approx 4.7$ T, which is masked by the 3D magnetic order. With the aid of accurate analytical analysis and numerical calculations, we show that the zone center INS spectrum at $H_c^{1D}$ is precisely described by the pattern of the 1D quantum Ising model in a magnetic field, a class of universality described in terms of the exceptional $E_8$ Lie algebra. These excitations keep to be non-diffusive over a certain field range when the system is away from the 1D QCP. Our results provide an unambiguous experimental realization of the massive $E_8$ phase in the compound, and open new experimental route for exploring the dynamics of quantum integrable systems as well as physics beyond integrability., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We present a mixed spin-(1/2, 5/2) chain composed of a charge-transfer salt (4-Br-$o$-MePy-V)FeCl$_4$. We observe the entire magnetization curve up to saturation, which exhibits a clear Lieb-Mattis magnetization plateau and subsequent quantum phase transition towards the gapless Luttinger-liquid phase. The observed magnetic behavior is quantitatively explained by a mixed spin-(1/2, 5/2) chain model. The present results demonstrate a quantum many-body effect based on quantum topology and provide a new stage in the search for topological properties in condensed matter physics.

Abstract

Unconventional features of relativistic Dirac/Weyl quasi-particles in topological materials are most evidently manifested in the 2D quantum Hall effect (QHE), whose variety is further enriched by their spin and/or valley polarization. Although its extension to three dimensions has been long-sought and inspired theoretical proposals, material candidates have been lacking. Here we have discovered valley-contrasting spin-polarized Dirac fermions in a multilayer form in bulk antiferromagnet BaMnSb$_2$, where the out-of-plane Zeeman-type spin splitting is induced by the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the distorted Sb square net. Furthermore, we have observed well-defined quantized Hall plateaus together with vanishing interlayer conductivity at low temperatures as a hallmark of the half-integer QHE in a bulk form. The Hall conductance of each layer is found to be nearly quantized to $2(N+1/2)e^2/h$ with $N$ being the Landau index, which is consistent with two spin-polarized Dirac valleys protected by the strong spin-valley coupling., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We successfully synthesized a verdazyl-based charge-transfer salt $[$$o$-MePy-V-($p$-Br)$_2]$FeCl$_4$, which has an $S_{\rm{V}}$=1/2 on the radical $o$-MePy-V-($p$-Br)$_2$ and an $S_{\rm{Fe}}$=5/2 on the FeCl$_4$ anion. $Ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital calculations indicate the formation of an $S_{\rm{V}}$=1/2 honeycomb lattice composed of three types of exchange interaction with two types of inequivalent site. Further, the $S_{\rm{V}}$=1/2 at one site is sandwiched by $S_{\rm{Fe}}$=5/2 spins through antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions. The magnetic properties indicate that the dominant AF interactions between the $S_{\rm{V}}$ = 1/2 spins form a gapped singlet state, and the remaining $S_{\rm{Fe}}$ = 5/2 spins cause an AF order. The magnetization curve exhibits a linear increase up to approximately 7 T, and an unconventional 5/6 magnetization plateau appears between 7 T and 40 T. We discuss the differences between the effective interactions associated with the magnetic properties of the present compound and ($o$-MePy-V)FeCl$_4$. We explain the low-field linear magnetization curve through a mean-field approximation of an $S_{\rm{Fe}}$ = 5/2 spin model. At higher field regions, the 5/6 magnetization plateau and subsequent nonlinear increase are reproduced by the $S_{\rm{V}}$ = 1/2 AF dimer, in which a particular internal field is applied to one of the spin sites. The ESR resonance signals in the low-temperature and low-field regime are explained by conventional two-sublattice AF resonance modes with easy-axis anisotropy. These results demonstrate that exchange interactions between $S_{\rm{V}}$ = 1/2 and $S_{\rm{Fe}}$ = 5/2 spins in $[$$o$-MePy-V-($p$-Br)$_2]$FeCl$_4$ realize unconventional magnetic properties with low-field classical behavior and field-induced quantum behavior., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1706.07546

Abstract

We present a new model compound with the S = 1/2 frustrated square lattice composed of the charge-transfer salt (o-MePy-V)PF6. Ab initio calculations indicate the formation of an S = 1/2 square lattice, in which six types of nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic- and antiferromagnetic interactions cause frustration. By applying a magnetic field, we observe an unusually gradual increase of magnetization and a subsequent 1/2-plateau-like behavior. A numerical analysis using the tensor network method qualitatively demonstrates such behaviors and suggests a collinear ordered state and a field-enhanced quantum fluctuation. Abstract

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_{\gamma}^{\rm dir}/d\eta$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta)^\alpha$ with $\alpha{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield., Comment: 673 authors from 82 institutions, 10 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. Abstract

A classical-quantum chain composed of regularly alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins is rigorously solved by considering two distinct local anisotropy axes of the Ising spins. The ground-state phase diagram and magnetization curves are examined depending on a spatial orientation of the applied magnetic field. The phase diagram totally consists of four distinct phases and a few macroscopically degenerate points, where an outstanding coexistence of perfect order and complete disorder occurs within the so-called 'half-fire, half-ice' state. The zero-temperature magnetization curves generally exhibit a smooth dependence on a magnetic field owing to a canting angle between two coplanar anisotropy axes of the Ising spins, which enforces a misalignment of the magnetization vector from a direction of the applied magnetic field. It is evidenced that the investigated spin-chain model reproduces magnetic features of the heterobimetallic coordination compound Dy(NO)$_{3}$(DMSO)$_{2}$Cu(opba)(DMSO)$_{2}$ (DMSO=dimethylsulfoxide, opba=orthophenylenebisoxamato). The high-field magnetization data reported for the powder sample of this polymeric coordination compound generally display a substantial smoothing on account of a powder averaging., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

We observe a disappearance of the 1/3 magnetization plateau and a striking change of the magnetic configuration under a moderate doping of the model triangular antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2. The reason is an effective lifting of degeneracy of mean-field ground states by a random potential of impurities, which compensates, in the low temperature limit, the fluctuation contribution to free energy. These results provide a direct experimental confirmation of the fluctuation origin of the ground state in a real frustrated system. The change of the ground state to a least collinear configuration reveals an effective positive biquadratic exchange provided by the structural disorder. Abstract

Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, $dE_T/d\eta$, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ and 62.4 GeV, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV, $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, and $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Inelastic neutron scattering is used to study the finite-temperature scaling behavior of the local dynamic structure factor in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet NTENP ($\text{Ni(N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)propane-1,3-diamine)(}\mu\text{-NO}_2\text{)ClO}_4$), at its field-induced Ising quantum critical point. The validity and the limitations of the theoretically predicted scaling relations are tested.

Abstract

We present the first experimental realization of an $S=2$ ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic (F-AF) alternating chain in a new Mn-verdazyl complex [Mn(hfac)$_2$]$\cdot$($o$-Py-V) [hfac=1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate; $o$-Py-V=3-(2-pyridyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl]. Through the $ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital calculation, magnetization, and ESR measurements, this compound is confirmed to form an $S=2$ F-AF alternating chain with Ising anisotropy below about 100 K. Furthermore, we find an anomalous change in magnetization at 1/4 of the saturation value, which is probably a manifestation of the quantum nature of the system., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

A magnetic horn system to be operated at a pulsed current of 320 kA and to survive high-power proton beam operation at 750 kW was developed for the T2K experiment. The first set of T2K magnetic horns was operated for over 12 million pulses during the four years of operation from 2010 to 2013, under a maximum beam power of 230 kW, and $6.63\times10^{20}$ protons were exposed to the production target. No significant damage was observed throughout this period. This successful operation of the T2K magnetic horns led to the discovery of the $\nu_{\mu}\rightarrow\nu_e$ oscillation phenomenon in 2013 by the T2K experiment. Abstract

We have studied the dependence of azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ for inclusive and identified charged hadrons in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions on collision energy, species, and centrality. The values of $v_2$ as a function of transverse momentum $p_T$ and centrality in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and 62.4 GeV are the same within uncertainties. However, in Cu$+$Cu collisions we observe a decrease in $v_2$ values as the collision energy is reduced from 200 to 62.4 GeV. The decrease is larger in the more peripheral collisions. By examining both Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions we find that $v_2$ depends both on eccentricity and the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$. We observe that $v_2$ divided by eccentricity ($\varepsilon$) monotonically increases with $N_{\rm part}$ and scales as ${N_{\rm part}^{1/3}}$. The Cu$+$Cu data at 62.4 GeV falls below the other scaled $v_{2}$ data. For identified hadrons, $v_2$ divided by the number of constituent quarks $n_q$ is independent of hadron species as a function of transverse kinetic energy $KE_T=m_T-m$ between $0.1

We have performed NMR experiments on the quasi one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 system LiCuVO$_4$ in magnetic fields $H$ applied along the c-axis up to field values near the saturation field $H_{\rm sat}$. For the field range $H_{\rm c2} 41.4$T, indicating that the majority of magnetic moments in LiCuVO$_4$ are already saturated in this field range. This result is inconsistent with the previously observed linear field dependence of the magnetization $M(H)$ for $H_{\rm c3}

Abstract

Unconventional high temperature superconductivity as well as three-dimensional bulk Dirac cone quantum states arising from the unique d-orbital topology has been a recent priority research area in physics. In iron pnictide compounds, although transport phenomena arisen from this multiple band Fermi surface are intriguing and scientifically important, they still do not give an adequate matching to neither experimental observations on the band picture nor theoretical calculations and a debate continues. Here we describe a new analytical approach of mobility spectrum, in which the carrier number is conveniently described as a function of mobility without any hypothesis about the number of carriers, on both longitudinal and transverse transport of high quality single crystal Ba(FeAs)$_2$ in a wide range of magnetic field. We show that the major numbers of carriers reside in large parabolic hole and electron pockets with very different topology as well as remarkably different mobility spectra, while the minor number of Dirac carriers resides in both hole- and electron- Dirac quantum states with the largest mobility as high as 70,000 cm$^2$(Vs)$^{-1}$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present a comprehensive structural study on perovskite-type 6H-Ba3CuSb2O9, which exhibits a spin-orbital short-range ordering on a honeycomb-based lattice. By combining synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electron spin resonance, ultrasound measurement and Raman spectroscopy, we found that the static Jahn-Teller distortion is absent down to the lowest temperature in the present material, indicating orbital ordering is strongly suppressed. Abstract

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ with distorted triangular-lattice structures are studied by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above. In the magnetically saturated phase, quantum fluctuations are fully suppressed, and the spin dynamics is defined by ordinary magnons. This allows us to accurately describe the magnetic excitation spectra in both materials and, using the harmonic spin-wave theory, to determine their exchange parameters. The viability of the proposed method was proven by applying it to Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$, yielding $J/k_B=4.7(2)$ K, $J'/k_B=1.42(7)$ K [$J'/J\simeq 0.30$] and revealing good agreement with inelastic neutron-scattering results. For the isostructural Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$, we obtain $J/k_B=14.9(7)$ K, $J'/k_B=6.1(3)$ K, [$J'/J\simeq 0.41$], providing exact and conclusive information on the exchange couplings in this frustrated spin system., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

Measurements of the midrapidity transverse energy distribution, $d\Et/d\eta$, are presented for $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and additionally for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 130 GeV. The $d\Et/d\eta$ distributions are first compared with the number of nucleon participants $N_{\rm part}$, number of binary collisions $N_{\rm coll}$, and number of constituent-quark participants $N_{qp}$ calculated from a Glauber model based on the nuclear geometry. For Au$+$Au, $\mean{d\Et/d\eta}/N_{\rm part}$ increases with $N_{\rm part}$, while $\mean{d\Et/d\eta}/N_{qp}$ is approximately constant for all three energies. This indicates that the two component ansatz, $dE_{T}/d\eta \propto (1-x) N_{\rm part}/2 + x N_{\rm coll}$, which has been used to represent $E_T$ distributions, is simply a proxy for $N_{qp}$, and that the $N_{\rm coll}$ term does not represent a hard-scattering component in $E_T$ distributions. The $dE_{T}/d\eta$ distributions of Au$+$Au and $d$$+$Au are then calculated from the measured $p$$+$$p$ $E_T$ distribution using two models that both reproduce the Au$+$Au data. However, while the number-of-constituent-quark-participant model agrees well with the $d$$+$Au data, the additive-quark model does not., Comment: 391 authors, 24 pages, 19 figures, and 15 Tables. Abstract

We report on high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$. Frequency-field diagrams of ESR excitations are measured for different orientations of magnetic fields up to 25 T. We show that the substantial zero-field energy gap, $\Delta\approx9.5$ K, observed in the low-temperature excitation spectrum of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ [Zvyagin $et~al.$, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 077206 (2014)], is present well above $T_N$. Noticeably, the transition into the long-range magnetically ordered phase does not significantly affect the size of the gap, suggesting that even below $T_N$ the high-energy spin dynamics in Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ is determined by short-range-order spin correlations. Abstract

The ferrimagnetic spin-1/2 chain composed of alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins in an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field is exactly solved using the spin-rotation transformation and the transfer-matrix method. It is shown that the low-temperature magnetization process depends basically on a spatial orientation of the magnetic field. A sharp stepwise magnetization curve with a marked intermediate plateau, which emerges for the magnetic field applied along the easy-axis direction of the Ising spins, becomes smoother and the intermediate plateau shrinks if the external field is tilted from the easy-axis direction. The magnetization curve of a polycrystalline system is also calculated by performing powder averaging of the derived magnetization formula. The proposed spin-chain model brings an insight into high-field magnetization data of 3d-4f bimetallic polymeric compound Dy(NO_3)(DMSO)_2Cu(opba)(DMSO)_2, which provides an interesting experimental realization of the ferrimagnetic chain composed of two different but regularly alternating spin-1/2 magnetic ions Dy^{3+} and Cu^{2+} that are reasonably approximated by the notion of Ising and Heisenberg spins, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We report the measurement of direct photons at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV. The direct photon signal was extracted for the transverse-momentum range of 4 GeV/c < p_T < 22 GeV/c, using a statistical method to subtract decay photons from the inclusive-photon sample. The direct-photon nuclear-modification factor R_AA was calculated as a function of p_T for different Au+Au collision centralities using the measured p+p direct-photon spectrum and compared to theoretical predictions. R_AA was found to be consistent with unity for all centralities over the entire measured p_T range. Theoretical models that account for modifications of initial-direct-photon production due to modified-parton-distribution functions in Au and the different isospin composition of the nuclei, predict a modest change of R_AA from unity and are consistent with the data. Models with compensating effects of the quark-gluon plasma on high-energy photons, such as suppression of jet-fragmentation photons and induced-photon bremsstrahlung from partons traversing the medium, are also consistent with this measurement., Comment: PHENIX Collaboration, 346 authors, 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Abstract

We have measured high-field magnetization and magnetoresistance of polycrystalline samples of the A-site ordered perovskite CaCu3Ti4-xRuxO12 (x=0 - 4) utilizing a non-destructive pulsed magnet. We find that the magnetization for x=0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 is nonlinear, and tends to saturate in high fields. This is highly nontrivial because the magnetization for x=0 and 4 is linear in external field up to the highest one. We have analyzed this field dependence based on the thermodynamics of magnetic materials, and propose that the external fields delocalize the holes on the Cu2+ ions in order to maximize the entropy. This scenario is qualitatively consistent with a large magnetoresistance of -70% observed at 4.2 K at 52 T for x=1.5., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present the results of the magnetization and dielectric constant measurements on untwinned single crystal samples of the frustrated S=1/2 chain cuprate LiCu_2O_2. Novel magnetic phase transitions were observed. A spin flop transition of the spiral spin plane was observed for the field orientations H||a,b. The second magnetic transition was observed at H~15 T for all three principal field directions. This high field magnetic phase is discussed as a collinear spin-modulated phase which is expected for an S=1/2 nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic chain system.

Abstract

We investigated the transport properties of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals before and after annealing with BaAs powder. The annealing remarkably improves transport properties, in particular the magnitude of residual resistivity which decreases by a factor of more than 10. From the resistivity measurement on detwinned crystals we found that the anisotropy of the in-plane resistivity is remarkably diminished after annealing, indicative of dominant contributions to the charge transport from the carriers with isotropic and high mobility below magnetostructural transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ and the absence of nematic state above $T_{\rm s}$. We found that the Hall resistivity shows strong non-linearity against magnetic field and the magnetoresistance becomes very large at low temperatures. These results give evidence for the manifestation of multiple carriers with distinct characters in the ordered phase below $T_{\rm s}$. By analyzing the magnetic field dependences, we found that at least three carriers equally contribute to the charge transport in the ordered phase, which is in good agreement with the results of recent quantum oscillation measurements., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, Published in Physical Review B

Abstract

The title compound belongs to a wide group of quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) antiferromagnets (AF) and its Co2+ ions form Q1D screw-chains along the c-axis. We here present the first investigation of the microscopic magnetic nature of a single crystalline BaCo2V2O8 sample using {\mu}+SR. Our data reveal the presence of several clear muon frequencies below TN indicating the onset of a long-range order. Above 5 K, the {\mu}+SR spectra is well fitted to a simple power-exponential relaxing function. The temperature dependence of the relaxation-rate ({\lambda}) as well as the power (n) display a clear anomaly around T = 44 K, indicating the onset of short-range 1D correlations., Comment: Submitted to Physics Procedia (muSR2011 conference)

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured omega meson production via leptonic and hadronic decay channels in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The invariant transverse momentum spectra measured in different decay modes give consistent results. Measurements in the hadronic decay channel in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions show that omega production has a suppression pattern at high transverse momentum, similar to that of pi^0 and eta in central collisions, but no suppression is observed in peripheral collisions. The nuclear modification factors, R_AA, are consistent in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at similar numbers of participant nucleons., Comment: 542 authors, pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. Submitted to Phys. Abstract

Magnetization of the frustrated $S=1/2$ chain compound LiCuVO$_4$, focusing on high magnetic field phases, is reported. Besides a spin-flop transition and the transition from a planar spiral to a spin modulated structure observed recently, an additional transition was observed just below the saturation field. This newly observed magnetic phase is considered as a spin nematic phase, which was predicted theoretically but was not observed experimentally. The critical fields of this phase and its dM/dH curve are in good agreement with calculations performed in a microscopic model (M. E. Zhitomirsky and H. Abstract

Transverse momentum (p^e_T) spectra of electrons from semileptonic weak decays of heavy flavor mesons in the range of 0.3 < p^e_T < 9.0 GeV/c have been measured at mid-rapidity (|eta| < 0.35) by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The nuclear modification factor R_AA with respect to p+p collisions indicates substantial energy loss of heavy quarks in the produced medium. In addition, the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v_2 has been measured for 0.3 < p^e_T < 5.0 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions. Abstract

We have investigated the temperature dependence of the resistive upper critical fields ($\mu_{0}H_{\rm c2}(T)$) for an Fe$_{1.05}$Te$_{0.85}$Se$_{0.15}$ single crystal, which exhibit superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} \sim 14 K, in magnetic fields of up to 55 T. Two-dimensional feature and superconducting fluctuations of the samples are found to be weak, because the resistive broadening effect on applied magnetic fields of up to 14 T is small. The Pauli paramagnetic effect is obviously evidenced by the strong suppression of the $\mu_{0}H_{\rm c2}^{ab}(T)$ ($H \parallel ab$) curve and nearly isotropic $\mu_{0}H_{\rm c2}(0) \approx 47 T is seen for both $H \parallel ab$ and $H \parallel c$. This fact is almost identical to the results of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystals reported previously. We have discussed that the small anisotropy of the upper critical field at low temperatures in Fe$_{1+y}$(Te,Se) systems against the variation of the Te/Se ratio., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

In the present work, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements were carried out on underdoped $\rm Bi_2Sr_{2-{\it x}}La_{\it x}CuO_{6+\delta}$ and $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}$ to clarify the origin of the pseudogap, in particular, the inhomogeneous large pseudogap. The nodal part of a d-wave pairing gap, which is under no influence of the inhomogeneous large pseudogap, was also examined by relating the homogeneous bottom part of the STS gap to a nodal d-wave gap in momentum space. We report that the inhomogeneous large pseudogap in the antinodal region links to a two-dimensional electronic charge order, and that the gap size of the nodal d-wave part $\rm {\Delta}_{sc}$ scales with the superconducting critical temperature $\rm {\it T}_c$ in the pseudogap regime., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We have investigated magnetic and transport properties of the {\it kagom\'{e}-bilayer} ferromagnet Fe$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$. A soft ferromagnetism and a large anomalous Hall effect are observed. The saturated Hall resistivity of Fe$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$ is 3.2 $\mu\Omega$cm at 300 K, which is almost 20 times higher than that of typical itinerant-ferromagnets such as Fe and Ni. The anomalous Hall coefficient $R_{{\rm s}}$ is 6.7$\times10^{-9}$ $\Omega$cm/G at 300 K, which is three orders of magnitude larger than that of pure Fe. $R_{{\rm s}}$ obeys an unconventional scaling to the longitudinal resistivity, $\rho_{xx}$, of $R_{{\rm s}} \propto \rho_{xx}^{3.3}$. Such a relationship cannot be explained by the skew and/or side-jump mechanisms and indicates that the origin of the anomalous Hall effect in the frustrated magnet Fe$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$ is indeed extraordinary., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We have investigated the fluorine-doping dependence of lattice constants, transports and specific heat for polycrystalline LaFePO1-xFx. F doping slightly and monotonically decreases the in-plane lattice parameter. In the normal state, electrical resistivity at low temperature is proportional to the square of temperature and the electronic specific heat coefficient has large value, indicating the existence of moderate electron-electron correlation in this system. Hall coefficient has large magnitude, and shows large temperature dependence, indicating the low carrier density and multiple carriers in this system. Temperature dependence of the upper critical field suggests that the system is a two gap superconductor. The F-doping dependence of these properties in this system are very weak, while in the FeAs system (LaFeAsO), the F doping induces the large changes in electronic properties. This difference is probably due to the different F-doping dependence of the lattice in these two systems. It has been revealed that a pure effect of electron doping on electronic properties is very weak in this Fe pnictide compound., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys. Soc. Abstract

From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co$^{\rm 2+}$ spin compound BaCo$_{\rm 2}$V$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N{\' e}el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering., Comment: 4pages, 4figure

Abstract

In this Letter, we report the results of ESR measurements in high magnetic fields up to about 53 T on single crystals of NiGa2S4 to clarify the spin dynamics in more detail. We have found that the dynamics of Z2 vortices affects the temperature dependence of the ESR absorption linewidth and the frequency dependence of the ESR resonance fields at 1.3 K is well explained by a conventional spin wave theory. Abstract

The entire magnetic phase diagram of the quasi two dimensional (2D) magnet on a distorted triangular lattice KFe(MoO4)2 is outlined by means of magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. It is found that the spin network breaks down into two almost independent magnetic subsystems. One subsystem is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true 3D order or quasi-2D order.
