4. Unlocking the potential of propolis: Concentration-dependent effects on Ossimi Ram (Ovis aries) semen quality

Abstract

Reproductive biotechnology requires successful and efficient cryopreservation of semen since it is a crucial technique for artificial insemination, which preserves and multiplies the superior genetic origins of animals. Propolis, a natural antioxidant produced by honeybees, was examined in this study. Tris-citric-glucose-soybean lecithin extender supplemented with propolis ethanolic extract (P, μg/mL) at 0 (Control), 25 (T1), 50 (T2), 100 (T3), and 200 (T4) was used. The extended semen, prepared in a 1:20 ratio (semen: extender) at 37 °C, was equilibrated for 2 hours at 5 °C and packaged in straws (0.25 ml) before storage in liquid nitrogen at -196 °C. Visual characteristics (e.g., motility, livability, abnormality), DNA integrity, lipid peroxidation, and total antioxidant capacity of semen after thawing with P extract were thoroughly investigated. The results revealed that the low concentration (T1, 25 and T2, 50 µg/ml P) decreased lipid peroxidation, apoptotic sperm, improved sperm characteristics, and maintained the highest sperm cell viability. This resulted in improved reproductive performance and DNA integrity during cryopreservation of Ossimi ram semen. However, the high concentration (T3, 100 and T4, 200 µg/ml P) had the opposite effect and showed a low impact on maintaining cryopreserved Ossimi ram semen. In conclusion, Propolis shows potential for enhancing cryopreservation efficiency, but an optimal dosage is crucial to avoid adverse effects.

Abstract

Spectral hole burning reduces sodium laser guide star efficiency. Due to photon recoil, atoms that are initially resonant with the single-frequency laser get Doppler shifted out of resonance, which reduces the return flux. Frequency-chirped (also known as frequency-swept) continuous-wave lasers have the potential to mitigate the effect of spectral hole burning and even increase the laser guide star efficiency beyond the theoretical limit of a single-frequency laser. On-sky measurements of a frequency-chirped, single-frequency laser guide star are performed at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma. In the experiment, a 35-cm telescope and a fast photon counting receiver system are employed to resolve the return flux response during laser frequency sweeps gaining insights into the population dynamics of the sodium layer. At a launched laser power of 16.5 W, we find a maximum gain in return flux of 22\% compared to a fixed-frequency laser. Our results suggest a strong dependence of chirping gain on power density at the mesosphere, i.e. laser power and seeing. Maximum gains are recorded at a chirping amplitude on the order of 150 MHz and a chirping rate of 0.8 MHz $\mu$s$^{-1}$, as predicted by theory. Time-resolved measurements during the chirping period confirm our understanding of the population dynamics in the sodium layer. To our knowledge these are the first measurements of return flux enhancement for laser guide stars excited by a single frequency-chirped continuous-wave laser. For higher laser powers, the effectiveness of chirping is expected to increase, which could be highly beneficial for telescopes equipped with high-power laser guide star adaptive optics systems, also for emerging space awareness applications using laser guide stars such as satellite imaging and ground-to-space optical communications.

Abstract

In the Era of Mega Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, the efficient networking through Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs) plays a vital role in its mission success. The deployed networking resources must be justified regarding the feasibility, reliability, and Quality of Service (QoS). The main challenge of such networks is the ISLs intermittence due to the dynamic nature of the constellation topology. In addition to the space environment. From this perspective, Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) protocols were proposed for alleviating the events of intermittence. This paper introduces a technique for using the discrete-event network simulator (NS3) for the simulation of LEO constellation networks. This technique considers the dynamic nature of network’s nodes in data streaming through ISLs. The paper presents a performance assessment of LEO constellation networks dedicated for forwarding the payload data through ISLs. The performance measures include both the delay and delivery ratio. The assessment considers different local resources such as transmitted power, Queue size, and transmission rate. The performance measures were applied for some selected DTN protocols such as “Epidemic” and “Spray and Wait”. The results illustrate the effects of different network resources and configurations that may affect the constellation mission.

8. The hymenopterous parasitoids of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), on cruciferous vegetables in Delhi, India

Abstract

Abstract Background The diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a serious and economically important pest of crucifers in Delhi, India. Larvae and pupae of the pest were collected from the cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli crops grown in vegetable fields at the farm of ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), New Delhi-110012, from December 2021 to June 2022. The larvae and pupae of the pest were transferred to the laboratory and reared for emergence of parasitoids’ adults at 25 ± 0.5 °C and RH 70 ± 5%. Results Four parasitoid species were emerged, viz. Apanteles mohandasi Sumodan & Narendran 1990, Cotesia vestalis (Haliday, 1834), Diadegma insulare (Cresson, 1865) and Diadromus collaris (Gravenhorst, 1829). Among them, A. mohandasi, C. vestalis and D. collaris were reported for the first time in Delhi, whereas D. insulare (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is recorded here for the first time in India. Additionally, the first record of parasitism by A. mohandasi on P. xylostella from Delhi was established. The highest parasitism percentage was that of C. vestalis and D. collaris. Moreover, higher parasitism rate was recorded during May 2022 in organically cultivated fields. The parasitism percentage by A. mohandasi, C. vestalis, D. insulare and D. collaris was 7.5, 22.5, 12.5 and 15%, respectively. Conversely, in conventionally farmed fields, the parasitism rates were 3.57, 16.67, 10 and 13.33%, respectively. Conclusion The use of biological control agents particularly the parasitoids in the IPM program of P. xylostella should be considered, thereby reducing reliance on insecticides and increasing the efficacy of hymenopteran parasitoids.

9. First record of Apanteles hemara (N.) on Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée and biodiversity of Hymenoptera parasitoids on Brinjal

Abstract

The brinjal fruit and shoot borer (BFSB), Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a very detrimental pest that causes significant economic losses to brinjal crop worldwide. Infested brinjal fruits were collected from vegetable fields located at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), New Delhi, India, during two consecutive seasons (2021–2022). The larvae of the pest were brought to the laboratory and reared under controlled conditions of 25 ± 0.5 °C and 70 ± 5% relative humidity, for the emergence of parasitoids. In addition, the survey of Hymenoptera parasitoids in brinjal was conducted utilizing a sweep net and yellow pan trap over the course of two seasons. The results reveal that five parasitoid species were emerged from L. orbonalis viz., Apanteles hemara Nixon, 1965, Bracon greeni Ashmead 1896 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Goryphus nursei (Cameron, 1907), Trathala flavoorbitalis (Cameron, 1907) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) and Spalangia gemina Boucek 1963 (Hymenoptera: Spalangiidae). Out of these, A. hemara and S. gemina were documented as new occurrences in Delhi. Additionally, A. hemara was recorded for the first time as a parasite on L. orbonalis. Trathala flavoorbitalis was observed during both seasons and exhibited higher parasitism reaching 15.55% and 18.46% in July and August 2022, respectively. However, the average parasitism (%) recorded by A. hemara, B. greeni, G. nursei, T. flavoorbitalis and S. gemina was 3.10%, 1.76%, 1.10%, 9.28% and 1.20% respectively. Furthermore, the findings showed a significant (p ≤ 0.01) strongly positive correlation between fruit infestation (%) by L. orbonalis and parasitism (%). The survey indicates the presence of a broad group (19 families and 60 species) of Hymenoptera parasitoids in the brinjal crop ecosystem in Delhi which could be valuable in biological control. In light of these results, this study revealed that A. hemara and other parasitoids identified in this study alongside T. flavoorbitalis would be ideal biocontrol agents within the integrated pest management (IPM) program of BFSB in Delhi.

Abstract

Quantum annealing (QA) is a heuristic algorithm for finding low-energy configurations of a system, with applications in optimization, machine learning, and quantum simulation. Up to now, all implementations of QA have been limited to qubits coupled via a single degree of freedom. This gives rise to a stoquastic Hamiltonian that has no sign problem in quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. In this paper, we report implementation and measurements of two superconducting flux qubits coupled via two canonically conjugate degrees of freedom (charge and flux) to achieve a nonstoquastic Hamiltonian. Such coupling can enhance performance of QA processors, extend the range of quantum simulations. We perform microwave spectroscopy to extract circuit parameters and show that the charge coupling manifests itself as a YY interaction in the computational basis. We observe destructive interference in quantum coherent oscillations between the computational basis states of the two-qubit system. Finally, we show that the extracted Hamiltonian is nonstoquastic over a wide range of parameters., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

16. Synergistic advancements in sewage-driven microbial fuel cells: novel carbon nanotube cathodes and biomass-derived anodes for efficient renewable energy generation and wastewater treatment

Abstract

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) offer a dual solution of generating electrical energy from organic pollutants-laden wastewater while treating it. This study focuses on enhancing MFC performance through innovative electrode design. Three-dimensional (3D) anodes, created from corncobs and mango seeds via controlled graphitization, achieved remarkable power densities. The newly developed electrode configurations were evaluated within sewage wastewater-driven MFCs without the introduction of external microorganisms or prior treatment of the wastewater. At 1,000°C and 1,100°C graphitization temperatures, corncob and mango seed anodes produced 1,963 and 2,171 mW/m2, respectively, nearly 20 times higher than conventional carbon cloth and paper anodes. An advanced cathode composed of an activated carbon-carbon nanotube composite was introduced, rivaling expensive platinum-based cathodes. By optimizing the thermal treatment temperature and carbon nanotube content of the proposed cathode, comparable or superior performance to standard Pt/C commercial cathodes was achieved. Specifically, MFCs assembled with corncob anode with the proposed and standard Pt/C cathodes reached power densities of 1,963.1 and 2,178.6 mW/m2, respectively. Similarly, when utilizing graphitized mango seeds at 1,100°C, power densities of 2,171 and 2,151 mW/m2 were achieved for the new and standard cathodes, respectively. Furthermore, in continuous operation with a flow rate of 2 L/h, impressive chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates of 77% and 85% were achieved with corncob and mango seed anodes, respectively. This work highlights the significance of electrode design for enhancing MFC efficiency in electricity generation and wastewater treatment.

19. New records of family Chalcididae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) on vegetables ecosystem from New Delhi, India.

Abstract

Chalcidids are important primary parasitoids for controlling several economic insect pests, and some are secondary parasitoids. These specimens were collected by using different traps during the period extending from November 2021 to October 2022, from various vegetable crops grown in different localities at ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), New Delhi. The larvae and pupa of the pests were brought to the lab and reared for the emergence of parasitoids at 25 ± 0.5°C and relative humidity of 65 ± 5%. Eleven species belonging to four genera in three subfamilies were identified: Brachymeria bengalensis (Cameron, 1897); B. hime (Habu, 1960); B. kassalensis (Kirby, 1886); B. lasus (Walker, 1841); B. minuta (Linnaeus, 1767); B. podagrica (Fabricius, 1787) (Brachymeriinae); Dirhinus anthracia (Walker, 1846); D. auratus Ashmead, 1905 (Dirhininae) and Antrocephalus sepyra (Walker, 1846); Kriechbaumerella kraussi (Narendran, 1989); K. rufimanus (Walker, 1860) (Haltichellinae). Among them six species are newly recorded from New Delhi. On the other hand, B. hime was recorded for the first time as a parasite on Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée (Lepidoptera, Crambidae). Abstract

Parabens are group of preservatives chemical compounds used in cosmetics, personal hygiene product, food products and pharmaceuticals. In this study the hepatorenal toxicity due to exposure to paraben was evaluated. In this study design Twenty four of albino rats experimentally used. Butyle paraben (BP) orally was given to animals 180 days in dose of 4.6 mg\kg.bw which equal to10 % of the LD50 of BP. The extract of Mushroom was given by stomach tube in dose of 10 mg/kg/day for six 180 days. Exposure to Parabens exhibited histopathological and biochemical alterations. In the line of biochemical analysis BP induced toxic changes in both liver and kidney, the hepatic cellular enzymes concentrations (AST, ALT), Bilirubin, urea and creatinine were raised. In contrast plasma proteins were decreased in comparison to the control group. In renal and hepatic tissues BP administration induced vascular congestion as well as necrosis in the hepatorenal epithelium. Both the biochemical and histopathological alteration was improved after giving mushroom extracts in comparison to BP given group. In conclusion, mushroom extracts exhibited biochemical and histopathological improvement in liver and kidney against the toxicity by Butylparaben.

22. COVID-19 in children: an approach for multisystem inflammatory syndrome

Abstract

Abstract Background and objectives Children suffering from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) usually present with mild symptoms and show lower mortality rates than adults. However, there have been several recent reports of more severe hyperinflammatory presentation in pediatric COVID-19 patients. This review article aims to summarize the current literature available on the main clinical features and management approaches of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Methods The authors searched different indexing databases for observational and interventional studies using search terms including “Coronavirus, COVID-19, pediatric, MIS-C, Kawasaki, and inflammation.” The retrieved publications were further assessed for relevance to the topic. Only relevant articles were included in writing this review article. Main body Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a hyperinflammatory syndrome temporally related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in pediatrics. It is characterized by persistent fever, rash, elevated inflammatory markers, and multiorgan failure with increasing rates of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal involvement. The exact pathophysiologic mechanisms of MIS-C are still unknown, but it is postulated to be due to an exaggerated immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children is diagnosed by exclusion of other underlying causes of organ failure. There is a lack of clinical evidence on the management of MIS-C. The current guidelines depend mainly on expert opinion based on the management of other hyper-inflammatory syndromes in children. Patients suffering from MIS-C are treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), corticosteroids, infliximab, tocilizumab, and anakinra. Conclusions Despite the growing reports on COVID-19 in children, there is still a lot to elucidate on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and subsequent management of MIS-C. Further trials are needed to investigate new approaches to manage MIS-C. Specific evidence-based guideline for management of MIS-C should be tailored to the current available information on MIS-C.

26. Maternal Immune Activation Induces Adolescent Cognitive Deficits Preceded by Developmental Perturbations in Cortical Reelin Signalling

Abstract

Exposure to maternal immune activation (MIA) in utero significantly elevates the risk of developing schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental disorders. To understand the biological mechanisms underlying the link between MIA and increased risk, preclinical animal models have focussed on specific signalling pathways in the brain that mediate symptoms associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as cognitive dysfunction. Reelin signalling in multiple brain regions is involved in neuronal migration, synaptic plasticity and long-term potentiation, and has been implicated in cognitive deficits. However, how regulation of Reelin expression is affected by MIA across cortical development and associated cognitive functions remains largely unclear. Using a MIA rat model, here we demonstrate cognitive deficits in adolescent object-location memory in MIA offspring and reductions in Reln expression prenatally and in the adult prefrontal cortex. Further, developmental disturbances in gene/protein expression and DNA methylation of downstream signalling components occurred subsequent to MIA-induced Reelin dysregulation and prior to cognitive deficits. We propose that MIA-induced dysregulation of Reelin signalling contributes to the emergence of prefrontal cortex-mediated cognitive deficits through altered NMDA receptor function, resulting in inefficient long-term potentiation. Our data suggest a developmental window during which attenuation of Reelin signalling may provide a possible therapeutic target.

Abstract

H3PO4/KOH combined solution is proposed as a new effective activation agent for activated carbon production from rice husk. Several activated carbon samples were produced by using different volumes of the utilized acid and alkali individually, in addition to the combined solution. FTIR results indicated that the mixed agent partially decomposed the chemical compounds on the rice husk char surface, resulting in an increase in the surface area. Moreover, XRD and EDS analyses showed the presence of a considerable amount of amorphous silica. Electrochemical measurements concluded that the volume of the activation agent solution should be optimized for both single and mixed activation agents. Numerically, for 0.3 g treated rice husk char, the maximum specific capacitance was observed at 7, 10 and 14 mL of H3PO4, KOH (3 M) and mixed (1:1 by volume) activation agents, respectively; the determined specific capacitance values were 73.5, 124.2 and 241.3 F/g, respectively. A galvanostatic charging/discharging analysis showed an approximate symmetrical triangular shape with linear voltage versus time profile which indicates very good electrochemical performance as an electrode in the supercapacitors application. The stability of the proposed activated carbon was checked by performing a cyclic voltammetry measurement for 1000 cycles at 2 mV/s and for 30,000 cycles at 10 mV/s. The results indicate an excellent specific capacitance retention, as no losses were observed.

Abstract

Cisplatin (CP) is a chemotherapeutic agent employed as a therapy for different solid tumors. CP elicits many negative side effects including ocular toxicity. L-arginine able to increase the anti-inflammatory cytokine levels in the bloodstream. This study aimed to evaluate the possible protective impact of L-arginine against ocular toxicity of cisplatin through its anti-inflammatory action. Forty male rats were utilized in this experiment. The treatment protocol duration lasted for one week. The rats were divided randomly into four equal groups, as follows: the normal control group (G1) received a single intraperitoneal injection of normal saline, Cisplatin-administered group (G2) received single intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin in a dose (10 mg/kg body weight), Cisplatin + L-arginine-treated group (G3) received i.p. injection of cisplatin in a dose (10 mg/kg b.wt.) followed immediately by i.p. injection of L-arginine in a dose (10 mg/kg b.wt.), and L-arginine-treated group (G4) received intraperitoneal injection of 10 mg/kg b.wt. L-arginine. The protective effect of L-arginine was assessed through histopathology and immunohistochemical analysis of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in ocular tissues. Cisplatin-administered group revealed corneal neovascularization, stromal inflammatory infiltration, corneal epithelial hyperplasia, and endothelial degeneration. Sclera revealed vascular congestion and inflammatory infiltrates. There were congested blood vessels, apoptosis, and a decrease the ganglionic cells number in the retinal tissue. Ciliary body had epithelial necrosis, congestion, and hemorrhage. These pathological changes were attenuated to be mild in the cisplatin + L-arginine-treated group. The intensity of the immunohistochemical expression of iNOS appeared weak and significantly decreased in G3 compared to G2. The obtained data validate that Co-treatment of cisplatin with L-arginine cause a reduction in histopathological ocular damage through its anti-inflammatory effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Carbon nanofiber-decorated graphite rods are introduced as effective and low-cost anodes for industrial wastewater-driven microbial fuel cells. Carbon nanofiber deposition on the surface of the graphite rods could be performed by the electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile/N,N-Dimethylformamide solution using the rod as nanofiber collector, which was calcined under inert atmosphere. The experimental results indicated that at 10 min electrospinning time, the proposed graphite anode demonstrates very good performance compared to the commercial anodes. Typically, the generated power density from sugarcane industry wastewater-driven air cathode microbial fuel cells were 13 ± 0.3, 23 ± 0.7, 43 ± 1.3, and 185 ± 7.4 mW/m2 using carbon paper, carbon felt, carbon cloth, and graphite rod coated by 10-min electrospinning time carbon nanofibers anodes, respectively. The distinct performance of the proposed anode came from creating 3D carbon nanofiber layer filled with the biocatalyst. Moreover, to annihilate the internal cell resistance, a membrane-less cell was assembled by utilizing a poly(vinylidene fluoride) electrospun nanofiber layer-coated cathode. This novel strategy inspired a highly hydrophobic layer on the cathode surface, preventing water leakage to avoid utilizing the membrane. However, in both anode and cathode modifications, the electrospinning time should be optimized. The best results were obtained at 5 and 10 min for the cathode and anode, respectively.

Abstract

The current study aims to investigate the heavy metals concentration and the degree of pollution in the water and adjacent sediment of the Nile River and its main tributaries at Khartoum City and River Nile State, Sudan. For this purpose, thirty-three water and sediment samples were collected from River Nile, Blue Nile, and White Nile. Water chemical properties and sediment physicо-chemical properties were measure. Concentrations of heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Ti, Zn) were determined for both sediment and water samples using inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES). Enrichment factor (EF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) were applied to quantify heavy metals pollution levels in sediment samples. The revealed that only Fe metal detected in the water samples and its concentrations within the permissible maximum limit. This indicated that water is highly suitable for irrigation. Depending on calculated enrichment factor (EF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo), sediment samples were found to be enriched and polluted with Mn and Mo particularly at Berber site which may as consequence of gold mining activities in this area. The study revealed relatively strong to strong correlation between heavy metals of Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, Zn (r2=0.84 to 0.99) and significant negative correlation with Mo (r2=0.58 to 0.73). This study recommends regular monitoring of heavy metals in the Nile River and its main tributaries for conservation and protection from pollution.

Abstract

Exposure to maternal immune activation (MIA) in utero significantly elevates the risk of developing schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental disorders. To understand the biological mechanisms underlying the link between MIA and increased risk, preclinical animal models have focussed on specific signalling pathways in the brain that mediate symptoms associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as cognitive dysfunction. Reelin signalling in multiple brain regions is involved in neuronal migration, synaptic plasticity and long-term potentiation, and has been implicated in cognitive deficits. However, how regulation of Reelin expression is affected by MIA across cortical development and associated cognitive functions remains largely unclear. Using a MIA rat model, here we demonstrate cognitive deficits in adolescent object-location memory in MIA offspring and reductions in Reln expression prenatally and in the adult prefrontal cortex. Further, developmental disturbances in gene/protein expression and DNA methylation of downstream signalling components occurred subsequent to MIA-induced Reelin dysregulation and prior to cognitive deficits. We propose that MIA-induced dysregulation of Reelin signalling contributes to the emergence of prefrontal cortex-mediated cognitive deficits through altered NMDA receptor function, resulting in inefficient long-term potentiation. Our data suggest a developmental window during which attenuation of Reelin signalling may provide a possible therapeutic target.
