11. Multidecadal climate and seasonal snow conditions in Svalbard

Abstract

Svalbard climate is undergoing amplified change with respect to the global mean. Changing climate conditions directly affect the evolution of the seasonal snowpack, through its impact on accumulation, melt, and moisture exchange. We analyze long‐term trends and spatial patterns of seasonal snow conditions in Svalbard between 1961 and 2012. Downscaled regional climate model output is used to drive a snow modeling system (SnowModel), with coupled modules simulating the surface energy balance and snowpack evolution. The precipitation forcing is calibrated and validated against snow depth data on a set of glaciers around Svalbard. Climate trends reveal seasonally inhomogeneous warming and a weakly positive precipitation trend, with strongest changes in the north. In response to autumn warming the date of snow onset increased (2 days  decade−1), whereas in spring/summer opposing effects cause a nonsignificant trend in the snow disappearance date. Maximum snow water equivalent (SWE) in winter/spring shows a modest increase (+0.01 meters water equivalent (mwe) decade−1), while the end‐of‐summer minimum snow area fraction declined strongly (from 48% to 36%). The equilibrium line altitude is highest in relatively dry inland regions, and time series show a clear positive trend (25 m decade−1) as a result of summer warming. Finally, rain‐on‐snow in the core winter season, affecting ground ice formation and limiting access of grazing animals to food supplies, peaks during specific years (1994, 1996, 2000, and 2012) and is found to be concentrated in the lower lying coastal regions in southwestern Svalbard. Abstract

There is considerable interest in banking of allograft veins for vascular recon struction procedures in patients for whom there are no suitable autologous or prosthetic vessels available. A major obstacle to vein banking has been posed by the lack of long-term storage studies and by a prior report indicating that veins deteriorated rapidly during liquid nitrogen storage. This study was, there fore, initiated to determine the effects of long-term liquid nitrogen storage on tissue viability. Viability was assessed by measurement of smooth muscle func tion in fresh, short-term (one to twenty-eight days), and long-term (> two years) cryopreserved canine saphenous veins. There were no significant differences in the median effective doses of norepinephrine, serotonin, and KCL for genera tion of isometric force by vein rings from short- and long-term stored groups. Similarly, the maximum forces generated by long-term-stored cryopreserved veins in response to each reagent were the same as in short-term-stored veins. 32. Photoaffinity labeling of mammalian alpha 1-adrenergic receptors. Identification of the ligand binding subunit with a high affinity radioiodinated probe.

Abstract

We have synthesized and characterized a novel high affinity radioiodinated alpha 1-adrenergic receptor photoaffinity probe, 4-amino-6,7-dimethoxy-2-[4-[5-(4-azido - 3 - [125I]iodophenyl) pentanoyl] - 1 - piperazinyl] quinazoline. In the absence of light, this ligand binds with high affinity (KD = 130 pM) in a reversible and saturable manner to sites in rat hepatic plasma membranes. The binding is stereoselective and competitively inhibited by adrenergic agonists and antagonists with an alpha 1-adrenergic specificity. Upon photolysis, this ligand incorporates irreversibly into plasma membranes prepared from several mammalian tissues including rat liver, rat, guinea pig, and rabbit spleen, rabbit lung, and rabbit aorta vascular smooth muscle cells, also with typical alpha 1-adrenergic specificity. Autoradiograms of such membrane samples subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis reveal a major specifically labeled polypeptide at Mr = 78,000-85,000, depending on the tissue used, in addition to some lower molecular weight peptides. Protease inhibitors, in particular EDTA, a metalloprotease inhibitor, dramatically increases the predominance of the Mr = 78,000-85,000 polypeptide while attenuating the labeling of the lower molecular weight bands. This new high affinity radioiodinated photoaffinity probe should be of great value for the molecular characterization of the alpha 1-adrenergic receptor.

Abstract

The commonest neurological condition seen by the clinician results from the various manifestations of cerebrovascular disease, which is due generally to some type of vascular anomaly, usually congenital, or to the complications of arteriosclerosis, with or without hypertension or heart disease, or to syphilis. Cerebral embolism is included in this group because the symptoms are due to some disturbance of cerebral circulation, because it has to be differentiated from other cerebral vascular lesions, and because the treatment is essentially the same as for cerebral thrombosis.CEREBROVASCULAR ACCIDENTSIntracranial but Extracerebral Hemorrhage.—Hemorrhage occurring in the cranium but outside of the cerebrum is usually due to a congenital vascular anomaly but may be due to trauma or to rupture of a superficial sclerotic artery. The usual congenital anomaly is an aneurysm due to malformation in the arterial wall at the bifurcation of one of the vessels comprising the circle of Willis.

Abstract

In the published reports dealing with the insulin treatment of schizophrenia the tendency has been to stress indications, contraindications, methods and results. This procedure has tended to place before the physician a new instrument for his armamentarium without warning him of the dangers except to give statistically the mortality rate. Because the mortality rate is low and because the disease is so hopeless that almost any method offering help is welcome, the dangers have not been sufficiently explained. This report is offered in the belief that more benefit is at present to be derived from a citation of difficulties than from addition of material to the already large literature on methods and results.Before presentation of cases a brief review of the circumstances leading to serious complications should be given. Good clinical results from the treatment depend on, though they are not directly proportional to, a certain severity or depth

Abstract

It is usual for the median nerve to innervate 41/2 muscles of the hand (opponens pollicis, abductor pollicis brevis, first and second lumbricals, and the superficial head of the flexor pollicis brevis); the remaining are supplied by the ulnar nerve.From the above it would appear that the management of peripheral nerve lesions, affecting the small muscles of the hand, would be a simple one. Actually the contrary is true, as physicians dealing in the diagnosis and repair of these nerve lesions often encounter striking variations with regard to the innervation of the intrinsic muscles of the hand.As long ago as 1886, Brooks1 discovered the existence of two heads of the flexor pollicis brevis and also of their varied nerve supply. 37. CHRONIC INTOLERABLE PAIN: DISCUSSION OF ITS MECHANISM AND REPORT OF EIGHT CASES TREATED WITH ELECTROSHOCK

Abstract

The effectiveness of electroshock therapy in relieving chronic, intractable pain is illustrated in the case histories of eight patients. In five of these, surgical measures for relief of the primary cause of pain were ineffective, and the suffering of the patients was so severe, that some neurosurgical procedure such as lobotomy seemed to be the only alternative to the continued use of narcotics. The use of electroshock is theoretically justified in cases where the pain is probably the accompaniment of activity in certain reverberating circuits in the nervous system. It was justified in the present series by the practical results, since these eight patients, with but one exception, were successfully rehabilitated. Many of the electroshock treatments were given on an outpatient basis. Criteria for the selection of suitable cases remain to be defined, but it is clear that some patients can be saved by this means from the necessity of choosing between neurosurgery and drug addiction.
