Commercially impactful quantum algorithms such as quantum chemistry and Shor's algorithm require a number of qubits and gates far beyond the capacity of any existing quantum processor. Distributed architectures, which scale horizontally by networking modules, provide a route to commercial utility and will eventually surpass the capability of any single quantum computing module. Such processors consume remote entanglement distributed between modules to realize distributed quantum logic. Networked quantum computers will therefore require the capability to rapidly distribute high fidelity entanglement between modules. Here we present preliminary demonstrations of some key distributed quantum computing protocols on silicon T centres in isotopically-enriched silicon. We demonstrate the distribution of entanglement between modules and consume it to apply a teleported gate sequence, establishing a proof-of-concept for T centres as a distributed quantum computing and networking platform., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

Even before its role in electroweak symmetry breaking, the Anderson-Higgs mechanism was introduced to explain the Meissner effect in superconductors. Spontaneous symmetry-breaking yields massless phase modes representing the low-energy excitations of the Mexican-Hat potential. Only in superconductors the phase mode is shifted towards higher energies owing to the gauge field of the charged condensate. This results in a low-energy excitation spectrum governed by the Higgs mode. Consequently, the Meissner effect signifies a macroscopic quantum condensate in which a photon acquires mass, representing a one-to-one analogy to high-energy physics. We report on the direct observation of the Higgs particle in the high-temperature superconductor Bi-2212 by developing an innovative technique to study its symmetries and energies after a "soft quench" of the Mexican-Hat potential. Population inversion of the metastable Higgs particle induced by an initial laser pulse allows identifying the polarization-dependent Higgs modes as an additional anti-Stokes Raman-scattering signal. Within Ginzburg-Landau theory, the Higgs-mode energy is connected to the Cooper-pair coherence length. Within a BCS weak-coupling model we develop a quantitative and coherent description of single-particle and two-particle channels. Multiband superconductors are sources of rich physics arising from multiple order parameters, which show unique collective dynamics including Leggett mode as relative phase oscillations. Previously, it has been pointed out that the Leggett mode can be optically excited in the linear response regime, as demonstrated in a one-dimensional model for multiband superconductors[T. Kamatani, et al., Phys. Rev. B 105, 094520 (2022)]. Here we identify the linear coupling term in the Ginzburg-Landau free energy to be the so-called Lifshitz invariant, which takes a form of $\boldsymbol{d}\cdot\left(\Psi^{*}_{i}\nabla\Psi_{j} - \Psi_{j}\nabla\Psi^{*}_{i}\right)$, where $\boldsymbol{d}$ is a constant vector and $\Psi_{i}$ and $\Psi_{j}$ $(i\neq j)$ represent superconducting order parameters. We have classified all pairs of irreducible representations of order parameters in the crystallographic point groups that allow for the existence of the Lifshitz invariant. We emphasize that the Lifshitz invariant can appear even in systems with inversion symmetry. The results are applied to a model of $s$-wave superconductors on a Kagome lattice with various bond orders, for which in some cases we confirm that the Leggett mode appears as a resonance peak in a linear optical conductivity spectrum based on microscopic calculations. Ultrafast optical control of quantum systems is an emerging field of physics. In particular, the possibility of light-driven superconductivity with ultrashort laser pulses has attracted much of attention. To identify non-equilibrium superconductivity, it is necessary to measure fingerprints of superconductivity on ultrafast timescales. Recently non-linear THz third harmonic generation (THG) was shown to directly probe the collective degrees of freedoms of the superconducting condensate including particularly the Higgs mode. Here we extend this idea to light-driven non-equilibrium states in superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4 establishing a protocol to access the transient superconducting (SC) order-parameter fluctuations. We perform an optical pump-THz-THG drive experiment and use a two-dimensional spectroscopy approach to disentangle the driven third-harmonic response of optically excited quasiparticles and the pure condensate response. In this way, 2D spectroscopy separately probes both the ultrafast pair breaking dynamics and transient pairing amplitude of the condensate., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures

We propose a realization of the superconducting diode effect in flux biased superconducting circuits of Josephson junctions. So far the observation of the superconducting diode effect has been limited to rather exotic material platforms. In theoretical proposals, it relied on a non-sinusoidal form of the current phase relation of Josephson junctions. Here, we show how the diode effect can be engineered in superconducting circuits without any such requirements. The only necessary ingredients are standard sinusoidal Josephson junctions and flux bias lines that are readily available in scalable industrial silicon-chip based superconducting design processes., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The performance of deep neural networks for image recognition tasks such as predicting a smiling face is known to degrade with under-represented classes of sensitive attributes. We address this problem by introducing fairness-aware regularization losses based on batch estimates of Demographic Parity, Equalized Odds, and a novel Intersection-over-Union measure. The experiments performed on facial and medical images from CelebA, UTKFace, and the SIIM-ISIC melanoma classification challenge show the effectiveness of our proposed fairness losses for bias mitigation as they improve model fairness while maintaining high classification performance. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first attempt to incorporate these types of losses in an end-to-end training scheme for mitigating biases of visual attribute predictors. Twisting two monolayers of a high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor can engender a chiral topological state with spontaneously broken time reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$. A crucial ingredient required for the emergence of a gapped topological phase is electron tunneling between the CuO$_2$ planes, whose explicit form (in an ideal clean sample) is dictated by the symmetry of the atomic orbitals. However, a large body of work on the interlayer transport in cuprates indicates importance of disorder-mediated incoherent tunneling which evades the symmetry constraints present in an idealized crystal. The latter arises even in the cleanest single-crystal samples through oxygen vacancies in layers separating the CuO$_2$ planes, introduced to achieve the hole doping necessary for superconductivity. Here we assess the influence of incoherent tunneling on the phase diagram of a twisted bilayer. We show that the model continues to support a fully gapped topological phase with broken $\mathcal{T}$, even in the limit of disorder-mediated interlayer coupling. Compared to the model with a constant, momentum conserving interlayer coupling, the extent of the topological phase around the 45$^\circ$ twist decreases with increasing incoherence, but remains robustly present for parameters likely relevant to Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

In 2017 Apple introduced the TrueDepth sensor with the iPhone X release. Although its primary use case is biometric face recognition, the exploitation of accurate depth data for other computer vision tasks like segmentation, portrait image generation and metric 3D reconstruction seems natural and lead to the development of various applications. In this report, we investigate the reliability of TrueDepth data - accessed through two different APIs - on various devices including different iPhone and iPad generations and reveal two different and significant issues on all tested iPads., Comment: 17 pages

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, smartphone-based proximity tracing systems became of utmost interest. Many of these systems use BLE signals to estimate the distance between two persons. The quality of this method depends on many factors and, therefore, does not always deliver accurate results. In this paper, we present a multi-channel approach to improve proximity classification, and a novel, publicly available data set that contains matched IEEE 802.11 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and BLE signal strength data, measured in four different environments. We have developed and evaluated a combined classification model based on BLE and IEEE 802.11 signals. Our approach significantly improves the distance classification and consequently also the contact tracing accuracy. We are able to achieve good results with our approach in everyday public transport scenarios. However, in our implementation based on IEEE 802.11 probe requests, we also encountered privacy problems and limitations due to the consistency and interval at which such probes are sent. In pump-probe spectroscopies, THz pulses are used to quench a system, which is subsequently probed by either a THz or optical pulse. In contrast, third-harmonic generation experiments employ a single multicycle driving pulse and measure the induced third harmonic. In this work, we analyze a spectroscopy setup where both a quench and a drive are applied and two-dimensional spectra as a function of time and quench-drive delay are recorded. We calculate the time evolution of the nonlinear current generated in the superconductor within an Anderson-pseudospin framework and characterize all experimental signatures using a quasiequilibrium approach. We analyze the superconducting response in Fourier space with respect to both the frequencies corresponding to the real time and the quench-drive delay time. In particular, we show the presence of a transient modulation of higher harmonics, induced by a wave mixing process of the drive with the quench pulse, which probes both quasiparticle and collective excitations of the superconducting condensate., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

Despite decades of search for the pairing boson in cuprate high-Tc superconductors, its identity still remains debated to date. For this reason, spectroscopic signatures of electron-boson interactions in cuprates have always been a center of attention. For example, the kinks in the quasiparticle dispersion observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies have motivated a decade-long investigation of electron-phonon as well as electron-paramagnon interactions in cuprates. On the other hand, the overlap between the charge-order correlations and the pseudogap in the cuprate phase diagram has also generated discussions about the potential link between them. In the present study, we provide a fresh perspective on these intertwined interactions using the novel approach of Higgs spectroscopy, i.e. an investigation of the amplitude oscillations of the superconducting order parameter driven by a terahertz radiation. Uniquely for cuprates, we observe a Fano interference of its dynamically driven Higgs mode with another collective mode, which we reveal to be charge density wave fluctuations from an extensive doping- and magnetic field-dependent study. This finding is further corroborated by a mean field model in which we describe the microscopic mechanism underlying the interaction between the two orders. Our work demonstrates Higgs spectroscopy as a novel and powerful technique for investigating intertwined orders and microscopic processes in unconventional superconductors.

Third-harmonic generation (THG) experiments on superconductors can be used to investigate collective excitations like the amplitude mode of the order parameter known as Higgs mode. These modes are visible due to resonances in the THG signal if the driving frequency matches the energy of the mode. In real materials multiple modes can exist giving rise to additional THG contributions, such that it is difficult to unambiguously interpret the results. In this paper, we additionally analyze the phase of the THG signal, which contains microscopic details beyond classical resonances as well as signatures of couplings between modes which are difficult to observe in the amplitude alone. We investigate how the Higgs mode, impurities or Coulomb interaction affects the phase response and consider exemplary two systems with additional modes. We can only allow human-robot-cooperation in a common work cell if the human integrity is guaranteed. A surveillance system with multiple cameras can detect collisions without contact to the human collaborator. A failure safe system needs to optimally cover the important areas of the robot work cell with safety overlap. We propose an efficient algorithm for optimally placing and orienting the cameras in a 3D CAD model of the work cell. In order to evaluate the quality of the camera constellation in each step, our method simulates the vision system using a z-buffer rendering technique for image acquisition, a voxel space for the overlap and a refined visual hull method for a conservative human reconstruction. The simulation allows to evaluate the quality with respect to the distortion of images and advanced image analysis in the presence of static and dynamic visual obstacles such as tables, racks, walls, robots and people. We propose a novel iterative method for optimally placing and orienting multiple cameras in a 3D scene. Sample applications include improving the accuracy of 3D reconstruction, maximizing the covered area for surveillance, or improving the coverage in multi-viewpoint pedestrian tracking. Our algorithm is based on a block-coordinate ascent combined with a surrogate function and an exclusion area technique. This allows to flexibly handle difficult objective functions that are often expensive and quantized or non-differentiable. The solver is globally convergent and easily parallelizable. We show how to accelerate the optimization by exploiting special properties of the objective function, such as symmetry. A pair of identical Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with bilinear coupling forms a quantum dual of a traversable wormhole, with a ground state close to the so called thermofield double state. We use adiabaticity arguments and numerical simulations to show that the character of the ground state remains unchanged when interaction strengths in the two SYK models become imbalanced. Analysis of thermodynamic and dynamical quantities highlights the key signatures of the wormhole phase in the imbalanced case. Further adiabatic evolution naturally leads to the 'maximally imbalanced' limit where fermions in a single SYK model are each coupled to a free Majorana zero mode. This limit is interesting because it could be more easily realized using various setups proposed to implement the SYK model in a laboratory. We find that this limiting case is marginal in that it retains some of the characteristic signatures of the wormhole physics, such as the spectral gap and revival dynamics, but lacks others so that it likely does not represent the full-fledged wormhole dual. We discuss how this scenario could be implemented in the proposed realization of the SYK physics in quantum wires of finite length coupled to a disordered quantum dot., Comment: 9+4 pages, 6+3 figures

Recent studies have emphasized the importance of impurity scattering for the optical Higgs response of superconductors. In the dirty limit, an additional paramagnetic coupling of light to the superconducting condensate arises which drastically enhances excitation. So far, most work concentrated on the periodic driving with light, where the third-harmonic generation response of the Higgs mode was shown to be enhanced. In this work, we additionally calculate the time-resolved optical conductivity of single- and two-band superconductors in a two-pulse quench-probe setup, where we find good agreement with existing experimental results. We use the Mattis-Bardeen approach to incorporate impurity scattering and calculate explicitly the time-evolution of the system. The observation of quantum criticality in diverse classes of strongly correlated electron systems has been instrumental in establishing ordering principles, discovering new phases, and identifying the relevant degrees of freedom and interactions. At focus so far have been insulators and metals. Semimetals, which are of great current interest as candidate phases with nontrivial topology, are much less explored in experiments. Here we study the Kondo semimetal CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The power-law divergence of the magnetic Gr\"unesien ratio reveals that, surprisingly, this compound is quantum critical without tuning. The dynamical energy over temperature scaling in the neutron response, seen throughout the Brillouin zone, as well as the temperature dependence of the static uniform susceptibility indicate that temperature is the only energy scale in the criticality. Such behavior, which has been associated with Kondo destruction quantum criticality in metallic systems, may well be generic in the semimetal setting., Comment: 16 pages (preprint format), 4 figures; Sci. Identifying topological properties is a major challenge because, by definition, topological states do not have a local order parameter. While a generic solution to this challenge is not available yet, a broad class of topological states, namely symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states, can be identified by distinctive degeneracies in their entanglement spectrum. Here, we propose and realize two complementary protocols to probe these degeneracies based on, respectively, symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies and measurement-based computational algorithms. The two protocols link quantum information processing to the classification of SPT phases of matter. They invoke the creation of a cluster state, and are implemented on an IBM quantum computer.
