The subfamily Plectorhinchinae (sweetlips) is composed of poorly-known species with high commercially and ecologically values that exhibit phenotypic plasticity and various morphologies. Few studies have assessed the validity of sweetlips, intergeneric relationships and evolutionary survey in this subfamily, which have not yet been resolved. This study investigated the DNA sequences of (1) the mitochondrial COI gene to delimit species, and (2) two mitochondrial (COI and Cyt b), and one nuclear (RAG1) markers to infer phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary and biogeographic history. The molecular results could differentiate Diagramma punctatum from the other species, but failed to distinguish D. labiosum as a distinct species with considerably lower genetic distances for the COI (0.53%) and Cyt b (0.51%) markers. However, additional taxonomic investigations are required to shed light on this issue. All previously described nominal species of sweetlips in the northwest Indian Ocean were found to be well supported. The monophyly of Plectorhinchus is not supported and Diagramma pictum and D. punctatum should be assigned to the genus Plectorhinchus. The biogeographic history of Plectorhinchinae likely originated in the Indo-Pacific ca. 34 Ma (30–39 Ma; late Eocene/ middle Oligocene) and subsequently colonised the Western Indian Ocean and the Central Indo-Pacific. Maximum diversification within the subfamily occurred from the middle Miocene to Pliocene, coinciding with dispersal and vicariance events. Diversification was probably driven by both biological and geographical factors.

Haemulidae represents one of the most diverse, widespread and conspicuous families of Perciformes, in which most species are marine, some brackish and rarely from freshwater. From April 2009 to July 2012, 120 specimens of Conodon nobilis, 60 Orthopristis rubra and 50 Anisotremus virginicus were collected off the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and analyzed for metazoan parasites. A total of 16 parasite taxa were found on/in A. virginicus, 19 on/in Co. nobilis and 21 on/in O. rubra, in which ectoparasites were most common on A. virginicus and Co. nobilis and endoparasites in O. rubra. All parasites showed aggregate pattern of distribution (discrepancy index values higher than 0.70). Mean abundance, species richness and Brillouin index (diversity) differed among the host species, i.e., O. rubra showed the highest values, followed by A. virginicus and Co. nobilis with intermediate and lowest values, respectively. At infracommunity level was possible to observe high similarity of parasite composition among the three host species. The digeneans Leurodera decora and Monorchis latus, and the acanthocephalan Koronacantha sp. represent new locality records off Brazil. Moreover, five, four and two taxa are reported, for the first time, parasitizing Co. nobilis, A. virginicus and O. rubra, respectively.

Grunts (family Haemulidae) are among the most commercially important fish in Bangladesh. This paper provides brief diagnostic characters of five previously reported grunt species: Plectorhinchus pictus (Thunberg, 1792); Pomadasys andamanensis McKay et Satapoomin, 1994; Pomadasys argenteus (Forsskål, 1775); Pomadasys argyreus (Valenciennes, 1833); Pomadasys maculatus (Bloch, 1793) and two new distributional records: Pomadasys guoraca (Cuvier, 1829) and Plectorhinchus macrospilus Satapoomin et Randall, 2000. The fishes were collected from the Saint Martin’s Island coral reef-like ecosystem and the adjacent sea of the Sundarbans mangrove forest of Bangladesh. The examined specimens were identified and diagnosed based on their morphometric characters and DNA barcoding COI gene. The new records of Pomadasys guoraca and Plectorhinchus macrospilus from Bangladesh greatly extend their distributional range in the Bay of Bengal. An updated checklist of grunts of Bangladesh is provided.

In this study, seven species of Pomadasys from the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman are examined. This genus includes species with high economic and ecological importance, and taxonomical challenges are due to their very similar meristic features. Three species of Pomadasys aheneus, P. furcatus and P. olivaceus are reported for the first time from the Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. These rare species were collected from coastal rocky habitats in 5–12 m water depth. This paper presents detailed description of seven Pomadasys species including morphological characters, distribution, photographs, along with identification key. The results of univariate and multivariate analyses were in relatively high agreement, indicating significant difference in the number of gill rakers, the number of tubed lateral-line scales, body depth, snout length, second and fifth dorsal-fin spine length, caudal-fin length and pectoral-fin length among the species. The variation in body shape showed a significant correlation with ecomorphological diversification. Species diversity of the Persian Gulf is low as compared with the Gulf of Oman which can be due to ecological factors and habitat structure.

The striped piggy, Pomadasys stridens (Forsskål, 1775), is a recent invasive fish species in the eastern Mediterranean. Although its population dynamics was investigated in detail in its natural distribution area, the western Indian Ocean, an important data gap still exists in the Mediterranean. This study was carried out to determine the growth, mortality, and the length–weight and length–length relations of invasive striped piggy right after its establishment in the area. Samples were collected seasonally between April 2014 and December 2015 by using bottom trawl from 10 and 20 m depth contours off the north-western coast of the Gulf of Iskenderun. After the length, weight, and sex of fish were recorded, sagittal otoliths were extracted and examined for age determination. Then length–length, length–weight, and length at age relations, growth performance, and mortality rates were calculated for both sexes and pooled data. In the study, a total of 1131 individuals were investigated, the total length of which ranged between 7.3 and 18.9 cm. The mean length was 12.32 ± 0.11 cm. There was no significant difference between the length–weight relation (LWR) parameters of sexes and pooled data. The overall LWR was found to be TW = 0.0113 * TL^3.096 in all specimens. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were not significantly different between males and females. The model parameters for both sexes were L∞ = 22.01 cm, K = 0.22 years–1, t0 = –1.30 years. The growth performance index (Ø′) was calculated as Ø′ = 2.03. For combined sexes, the total, natural and fishery mortality rates were Z = 1.14 years–1, M = 0.66 years–1, and F = 0.48 years–1, respectively. The exploitation rate of the stock was found to be E = 0.42. The growth performance of the invasive striped piggy population was determined to be similar to the ones reported from the Gulf of Suez where was the closest natural distribution area of the species. Although striped piggy is proper for human consumption and commercially caught in its native range, its fishery has not yet been established in the Eastern Mediterranean and we found that there was insufficient fishery pressure on the invasive population.

Los recursos pesqueros abarcan todavía a un importante sector de la economía panameña, pero se requiere aún de contar con una serie de datos de forma continua y más completa con el fin de contar con una data pesquera confiable. Se presenta por vez primera una lista revisada, actualizada y ordenada filogenéticamente con los peces comerciales que ocurren en la costa Pacífica de la República de Panamá. Para ello se consolidó en una sola lista los tres informes gubernamentales disponibles, así como de otras publicaciones recientes sobre peces comerciales del Pacífico panameño. El listado obtenido fue ordenado filogenéticamente siguiendo a Nelson (2018) e incluye una revisión integral de los nombres científicos actualizados con su respectiva autoridad y año según FishBase (2019), así como los principales nombres comunes utilizados localmente. Se obtuvo un total de 223 especies de peces de importancia comercial para el Pacífico de Panamá, correspondientes a 183 peces óseos y 40 cartilaginosos. Para cada récord consolidado de los peces se incluye en dicha lista el orden (N= 24) y la familia (N= 49), así como la autoridad y año válido para cada uno de los mismos. Las familias más representativas listadas fueron Carangidae (28 carángidos), Sciaenidae (25 corvinas), Carcharhinidae (17 tiburones), Serranidae (17 serránidos), Haemulidae (14 roncadores) y Lutjanidae (10 pargos), comprendiendo un 50 % del total (111 especies). Adicionalmente, se encontraron un total de 31 especies de peces comerciales que ocurren en ambas vertientes de Panamá (Pacífico y Caribe), así como a 39 en alguna categoría de amenaza. Se requiere de un mayor esfuerzo en la captura de datos de los desembarques pesqueros a nivel nacional para poder evaluar el comportamiento y medidas a aplicar para algunas de nuestras pesquerías comerciales.

Cuba has been leading marine protected area (MPA) designation in the Caribbean region to ensure conservation of its valuable marine ecosystems. Yet, an efficient monitoring program for MPAs is still to be implemented and will benefit from pre-existing information. The highly regulated MPA of Punta Frances National Park is one of the first Cuban MPAs and was established mainly to protect species and ecosystems for tourism purposes. Monitoring of protection effects on commercial fish species was lacking in this MPA. This study aimed at increasing local scientific knowledge by providing a baseline study about the most commercially fished families (Haemulidae, Lutjanidae and Serranidae) around Punta Frances MPA. Data collected represent only a limited period but can be used as a base point to support future monitoring. Fish abundance in number and biomass, and size were collected to test for differences between inside and adjacent areas outside the Punta Frances MPA, in different coral reef types. The main result of this study was the significantly larger size and biomass of snappers and groupers outside the MPA where intense fisheries occur. An observation consistent with a large spawning aggregation was also recorded outside the MPA. Even with a limited set of data, these results suggest that, at least temporarily, the most targeted species [and sizes] are still highly vulnerable to fisheries. Relevant habitats in the adjacent area, that are apparently missing within the MPA, may support some of the results found. Extending the limits of the Punta Frances MPA to include those habitats outside may be critical to ensure the effectiveness of this MPA in contributing to protect the most commercial species of the region. This should be done together with efficient fisheries management measures in the region, such as the significantly increase of minimum legal sizes and temporal closures during spawning migrations.

The Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) is a dynamic coastal environment characterized by a complex system of oceanic processes and discontinuous rocky habitats. These features, in conjunction with the ecological and physiological characteristics of Anisotremus interruptus , might limit gene flow and shape the evolutionary history of the species. In this study, we investigate the evolutionary history of the reef fish A. interruptus (and its Atlantic sister species A. surinamensis) throughout its range in the TEP, using two mitochondrial (cox1 and cytb) and two nuclear markers (S7 and RAG1). We found three genetic groups of A. interruptus with recent divergence times from the Galapagos Archipelago, Revillagigedo Archipelago, the continental TEP, and A. surinamensis the sister specie from the Atlantic. The haplotype mtDNA networks show A. surinamensis in a central position with respect to Pacific genetic haplogroups, whereas nDNA networks show mixed haplotypes between the four genetic groups. In the species tree, A. surinamensis appears as the sister species of all the Pacific samples and the Galapagos Archipelago population emerges as a genetically distinctive group. The samples from the Revillagigedo Archipelago also constitute a genetic distinctive group, closely related to the continental samples. Continental individuals do not show significant genetic structure and exhibit a population expansion during the Pleistocene. The sandy gaps of the TEP not appear to act as barriers isolating populations of A. interruptus, whereas the open sea gap between the oceanic islands and the continental coast do. It is reported on the results of a trawls survey to assess the amount of catch Per Unit of Area (CPUA) and also to determine the distribution pattern of grunts of demersal fishes as one the most important and commercial fish species in the north of Oman Sea. The catch per unit area CPUA as the main index was estimated. A CPUA and distribution change of this group was undertaken from 2003 to 2013. There was an annual monitoring survey during the years 2003-2013 by swept- area of the trawling area in the Oman Sea using R/V ʻFerdows-1ʼcovering into five strata (or sub-region) and four depth layers of 10-20, 20-30, 30-50, and 50-100 meters in the northern Oman Sea. The Results showed that central and eastern regions can be considered as main fishing grounds of this group of fishes with high abundance. However, the highest mean CPUA belongs to strata C & E (420.7 and 306.1 kg/nm2) and B (266.1 kg/nm2) as the main fishing grounds comparing to the other two covering strata A & D, respectively. The Results of depth layers density revealed the highest frequency was for the depths < 30 m (475.3 kg/nm2). As well as, CPUA had a descending trend by increasing the depth. The highest and lowest value belonged to the depths 20-30 and 50–100 m, respectively. Grunts (Haemulidae family) have economic importance in terms of the commercial catch in the Oman Sea. In the last decade, CPUA of grunts shows a decreasing trend which represents the significant decrease in fisheries resources.

Description The outline of the otoliths of this species changes ontogenetically; from circular in smaller specimens to more oblong and triangular in large individuals, which results from their deeper posterior part and longer rostrum. The postero-dorsal angle becomes prominent in large individuals, but the extension on the postero-ventral part of the otolith already exists in the small specimens. The margins can be considered smooth, but are more irregular at the dorsal rim. The otoliths are rather thin, with their inner face strongly convex and outer face strongly concave. The sulcus is well-developed. The ostium is about as long as the cauda in large specimens but it is shorter in smaller ones. The ostium opens on the anterior rim and is completely filled with a large colliculum. The junction of the ostial and caudal crista inferior is located slightly more caudally with respect to the same junction in the crista superior. In large specimens the cauda is straight for about two-thirds of its length and its posterior part is markedly curved in a ventral direction, but in smaller specimens the cauda widens at the end and is only slightly bent ventrally. The cristae are well-developed, but not ridge-like; the ostial crista superior curves markedly towards the dorsal rim in small specimens. The dorsal area is wide and about of the same height as the ventral one. Remarks Anisotremus rambo sp. nov. was first reported from the Yazoo Clay of Louisiana by Nolf & Stringer (2003), who then placed the species in the recent genus Anisotremus (see iconography of comparative Recent material therein). The large specimen from the Yazoo Clay further demonstrates the drastic ontogenetic change within the species. Small individuals are rounder in shape and have a shorter downward directed portion of the cauda, whereas larger ones become more elongate both in the ostium and the overall shape of the otolith, and have a longer and more strongly downward inclined portion of the cauda. The sulcus configuration, however, is more or less conservative and not changing ontogenetically. The transition can be observed from the medium-sized specimens (Fig. 30D, F). Ebersole et al. (2019) recently reported this species from the “upper” Lisbon Formation of Alabama, expanding its geographical distribution. The fossil otoliths of the southern USA have been known for more than 130 years and are among the richest assemblages worldwide. However, previous studies are often scattered and with outdated systematic scheme. A collection of over 25000 otoliths ranging in age from the Lutetian to the Priabonian from 47 sites in five states in the eastern and southern USA is analysed here. Combined with the earlier described material, at least 101 otolith-based taxa are documented, of which 83 are identified at species level. Fourteen of these are introduced as new species: Elopothrissus bernardlemorti sp. nov., “Muraenesox” barrytownensis sp. nov., Pseudophichthys texanus sp. nov., Paraconger wechesensis sp. nov., Neoopisthopterus weltoni sp. nov., “aff. Glyptophidium” stringeri sp. nov., Symmetrosulcus dockeryi sp. nov., Mene garviei sp. nov., “Citharus” varians sp. nov., Waitakia beelzebub sp. nov., Astroscopus compactus sp. nov., Parascombrops yanceyi sp. nov., Anisotremus rambo sp. nov., and Pagellus pamunkeyensis sp. nov. The assemblages are distinct fom contemporary European faunas by the complete lack of mesopelagic fish otoliths, and by the presence of sciaenids. Dominant taxa in the American Eocene are the Ophidiidae, Sciaenidae, Lactariidae, and Congridae. They indicate shallow-water environments for all the sampled sites. The notable abundance of those taxa suggests that they could have a higher turnover rate, and provided fundamental nutrition in the local Paleogene marine ecosystem. Further analyses of the species in the stratigraphic succession revealed that a faunal turnover between the Claiborne and Jackson seas was evident in teleosts, and it might be more widespread in other marine organisms in the region.

The knowledge of the Costa Rican freshwater fish fauna continues to grow given the discovery of new taxa, the recognition of taxa resurrected from synonymy and the corroboration of new country records and new range extensions. Moreover, recent advances in the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships and status of many supraspecific groups have led to numerous taxonomic and nomenclatural changes. Given this, the purpose of this paper is to update the known composition, distribution and clasification of the Costa Rican freshwater fish fauna taking as reference the most recent list for the country published by Angulo et al. (2013). A total of 23 new country records (i.e., species; distributed in 17 families and 21 genera), 33 new range extensions (distributed in 20 families and 30 genera) and several nomenclatural changes are reported, illustrated and discussed here. An updated and annotated checklist of the freshwater fishes of the country (including data for a total of 283 species, 13 of which are exotic, distributed in two classes, 27 orders, 55 families and 136 genera) is also provided.

Diagnosis: This species differs from the other species of the family occurring in the freshwaters of the country (Pacific) by the following combination of characters: pectoral fins very long, exceeding the end of the pelvic fins and reaching the level of the anus [vs. pectoral fins short, not reaching the end of the pelvic fins in Pomadasys empherus Bussing, 1993 and Rhonciscus bayanus (Jordan & Evermann, 1898)]; lateral line scales 41���46 [vs. 50���54 in Haemulopsis leuciscus (G��nther, 1864), 47���51 in Pomadasys branickii (Steindachner, 1879) and 50���51 in R. bayanus); dorsal fin rays 13 (vs. 14 in H. leuciscus and 11���12 in P. branickii, P. empherus and R. bayanus); and second anal spine longer and thicker than the third anal spine (vs. second anal spine shorter and thinner than the third anal spine in H. leuciscus).
