Abstract

Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. Abstract

Physical activity (PA) may modify the genetic effects that give rise to increased risk of obesity. To identify adiposity loci whose effects are modified by PA, we performed genome-wide interaction meta-analyses of BMI and BMI-adjusted waist circumference and waist-hip ratio from up to 200,452 adults of European (n = 180,423) or other ancestry (n = 20,029). We standardized PA by categorizing it into a dichotomous variable where, on average, 23% of participants were categorized as inactive and 77% as physically active. While we replicate the interaction with PA for the strongest known obesity-risk locus in the FTO gene, of which the effect is attenuated by ~30% in physically active individuals compared to inactive individuals, we do not identify additional loci that are sensitive to PA. In additional genome-wide meta-analyses adjusting for PA and interaction with PA, we identify 11 novel adiposity loci, suggesting that accounting for PA or other environmental factors that contribute to variation in adiposity may facilitate gene discovery.

Abstract

This program is a high-performance testbed for flight demonstration of student developed hardware and software. The program provides students, in all engineering disciplines and majors, with unique opportunities to design, fabricate, and launch novel flight hardware, data acquisition systems, and sensor design concepts. The vehicle is inherently an ecosystem of individual components that can be tested and improved by students frequently. Students also have an opportunity to leverage the vehicle’s flight through several unique environments to conduct scientific research. The goal is to surpass the Karman line where new/unproven technology can be implemented at low risk and with a predictable cost and schedule. The quick turnaround between flights and the number of vehicles ready to launch at any given time ensures a short mission life cycle that can make experimentation significantly more affordable for the next generation of aerospace engineers.

Abstract

This study assesses the impact of adoption of improved seed yam technology (the minisett technology) on yam yields and the income of smallholder farmers in the northwest region of Cameroon. This technology has the potential to increase yam yields by a factor of 2 to 3 compared to traditional techniques, however, adoption by smallholder farmers in Cameroon has so far been low. Survey data was collected from a total of 394 randomly sampled farmers in three of the five administrative divisions of the northwest region. Of this total sample a sub-sample of data from 274 farmers who had been exposed to the technology was analyzed using propensity score matching (PSM) and employing a variety of different matching algorithms that take into account counterfactuals and potential impact. PSM is a quasi-experimental research design which was adopted because it is known to address problems of selection bias resulting from sampling and self-selection issues. Abstract

Blood pressure (BP) is a heritable, quantitative trait with intraindividual variability and susceptibility to measurement error. Genetic studies of BP generally use single-visit measurements and thus cannot remove variability occurring over months or years. We leveraged the idea that averaging BP measured across time would improve phenotypic accuracy and thereby increase statistical power to detect genetic associations. We studied systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and pulse pressure (PP) averaged over multiple years in 46,629 individuals of European ancestry. We identified 39 trait-variant associations across 19 independent loci (p < 5 × 10(-8)); five associations (in four loci) uniquely identified by our LTA analyses included those of SBP and MAP at 2p23 (rs1275988, near KCNK3), DBP at 2q11.2 (rs7599598, in FER1L5), and PP at 6p21 (rs10948071, near CRIP3) and 7p13 (rs2949837, near IGFBP3). Replication analyses conducted in cohorts with single-visit BP data showed positive replication of associations and a nominal association (p < 0.05). We estimated a 20% gain in statistical power with long-term average (LTA) as compared to single-visit BP association studies. Using LTA analysis, we identified genetic loci influencing BP. LTA might be one way of increasing the power of genetic associations for continuous traits in extant samples for other phenotypes that are measured serially over time.

Abstract

AimsThe Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young planned biomarker discovery studies on longitudinal samples for persistent confirmed islet cell autoantibodies and type 1 diabetes using dietary biomarkers, metabolomics, microbiome/viral metagenomics and gene expression.MethodsThis article describes the details of planning The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young biomarker discovery studies using a nested case-control design that was chosen as an alternative to the full cohort analysis. In the frame of a nested case-control design, it guides the choice of matching factors, selection of controls, preparation of external quality control samples and reduction of batch effects along with proper sample allocation.Results and conclusionOur design is to reduce potential bias and retain study power while reducing the costs by limiting the numbers of samples requiring laboratory analyses. It also covers two primary end points (the occurrence of diabetes-related autoantibodies and the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes). The resulting list of case-control matched samples for each laboratory was augmented with external quality control samples.

Abstract

The Standard Model of particle physics predicts the existence of a new massive state: the Higgs Boson. The discovery or exclusion of this particle is one of the main goals of the ATLAS experiment. One of the greatest experimental challenges at the LHC is to achieve efficient triggering. The ATLAS rst level calorimeter trigger uses reduced granularity information from the calorimeters to search for high ET e, y,t and jets as well as identifying high Emiss T and total ET events. A Finite Impulse Response (FIR) lter combined with a peak nder is applied to identify signals, determine their correct bunch-crossing and improve the energy measurement. A study to determine the optimum lter coecients is presented. The performance of these lters is investigated with commissioning data and cross-checks of the calibration with initial beam data are shown. In this thesis a study of the search sensitivity in the channel H - ZZ - llbb is presented. This channel can contribute to the Higgs search in the high mass region that has been unexplored by previous lower energy colliders. Abstract

Elevated blood pressure is a common, heritable cause of cardiovascular disease worldwide. To date, identification of common genetic variants influencing blood pressure has proven challenging. We tested 2.5 million genotyped and imputed SNPs for association with systolic and diastolic blood pressure in 34,433 subjects of European ancestry from the Global BPgen consortium and followed up findings with direct genotyping (N ≤ 71,225 European ancestry, N ≤ 12,889 Indian Asian ancestry) and in silico comparison (CHARGE consortium, N = 29,136). We identified association between systolic or diastolic blood pressure and common variants in eight regions near the CYP17A1 (P = 7 × 10(-24)), CYP1A2 (P = 1 × 10(-23)), FGF5 (P = 1 × 10(-21)), SH2B3 (P = 3 × 10(-18)), MTHFR (P = 2 × 10(-13)), c10orf107 (P = 1 × 10(-9)), ZNF652 (P = 5 × 10(-9)) and PLCD3 (P = 1 × 10(-8)) genes. All variants associated with continuous blood pressure were associated with dichotomous hypertension. These associations between common variants and blood pressure and hypertension offer mechanistic insights into the regulation of blood pressure and may point to novel targets for interventions to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Abstract

Background: A lack of onsite clinical trials is the largest barrier to participation of cancer patients in trials. Development of an automated process for regional trial eligibility screening first requires identification of patient electronic health record data that allows effective trial screening, and evidence that searching for trials regionally has a positive impact compared with site‐specific searching. Methods: To assess a screening framework that would support an automated regional search tool, a set of patient clinical variables was analyzed for prescreening clinical trials. The variables were used to assess regional compared with site‐specific screening throughout the United States. Results: Eight core variables from patient electronic health records were identified that yielded likely matches in a prescreen process. Assessment of the screening framework was performed using these variables to search for trials locally and regionally for an 84‐patient cohort. The likelihood that a trial returned in this prescreen was a provisional trial match was 45.7%. Expanding the search radius to 20 miles led to a net 91% increase in matches across cancers within the tested cohort. In a U.S. regional analysis, for sparsely populated areas, searching a 100‐mile radius using the prescreening framework was needed, whereas for urban areas a 20‐mile radius was sufficient. Conclusion: A clinical trial screening framework was assessed that uses limited patient data to efficiently and effectively identify prescreen matches for clinical trials. This framework improves trial matching rates when searching regionally compared with locally, although the applicability of this framework may vary geographically depending on oncology practice density. Plain Language Summary: Clinical trials provide cancer patients the opportunity to participate in research and development of new drugs and treatment approaches. It can be difficult to find available clinical trials for which a patient is eligible.This article describes an approach to clinical trial matching using limited patient data to search for trials regionally, beyond just the patient's local care site.Feasibility testing shows that this process can lead to a net 91% increase in the number of potential clinical trial matches available within 20 miles of a patient.Based on these findings, a software tool based on this model is being developed that will automatically send limited, deidentified information from patient medical records to services that can identify possible clinical trials within a given region. To increase patient access to clinical trials, a prescreening framework was developed using deidentified data elements extracted from patient electronic health records to identify likely clinical trials in a regional manner. Feasibility testing shows that this framework effectively performs trial eligibility screening using limited patient data and improves trial matching rates because of regional search capability. 50. Narrative and Structure in Consultation

Abstract

This article explores the process of consultation to professional networks, teams, groups and individuals concerned with the mental health of children and young people in the care system, and those adopted. Frequently there are significant elements of early trauma suffered by the young people and disruption in the professional organisation. The article describes the way in which clients' narratives are brought together by, or impact upon the professional network around them. It then formulates a structural framework to assist thinking, often an early casualty when dealing with traumatic events. This is founded upon Bion's concept of container/ contained, Steiner's concept of "psychic retreats" and Armstrong's application of this to organisations. The undermining of language so that it becomes unserviceable for emotional development is considered as the source of disruption of narrative thought. This necessitates the use of physical images, or models, as a basis for understanding.
