Background: In 2020, there were 36.7 million reported falls among older adults (65+) in the United States. Ethanol and other sedating substances may increase fall risk among older adults due to their effect on cognitive and physical function. We estimate the prevalence of these substances in blood specimens of older adults presenting with a fall injury at selected trauma centers. Methods: The initial study collected blood specimens from May 2020 through July 2021 from adults undergoing a trauma team evaluation at selected United States Level 1 trauma centers. We limited our study to older adults evaluated after a fall (n = 1,365) and selected a random sample (n = 300) based on age, sex, and trauma-center quotas. Medical health records and blood specimens obtained at trauma center presentation were analyzed. We estimated the prevalence of ethanol, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, and opioids in the blood specimens. Two-sample tests of binomial proportions and Chi-square two-tailed tests were used to compare prevalence estimates of substances by demographic characteristics. Results: At least one substance was detected among 31.3% of samples analyzed. Prevalences of specific substances detected were 9.3% (95% CI: 6.0–12.6%) for benzodiazepines, 4.3% (95% CI: 2.0–6.7%) for cannabinoids, 8.0% (95% CI: 5.2–11.7%) for ethanol, and 15.0% (95% CI: 10.9–19.1%) for opioids. There were 18 deaths (6%; 95% CI: 3.6–9.3%). One-third of decedents had at least one substance detected in their blood. Discussion: Opioids were the most frequently detected substance, followed by benzodiazepines, ethanol, and cannabinoids. Substance use prevalence was not uniform across demographics, with differences observed by sex and age. Conclusions: This study provides insight into the frequency of the presence of substances that may contribute to fall risk and serious injury among older adults. The rapid transformation from conventional vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) holds promise for enhancing air quality, reducing CO2 emissions, revitalizing the renewable energy market, and enhancing countries' economies. This study investigated the performance of EVs in Jordan and the key challenges hindering their rapid development. It implemented a structured questionnaire of 202 EV owners/drivers and 15 interviews with technicians at many service centers. Findings revealed that Jordan leads among MENA countries in Battery Electric Vehicles(BEVs) market share and growth rate, with 52% market share of BEVs new cars in 2023, projected to surpass 80% by 2025. This rapid development is tied up with many internal and external influences; government backing, high fossil fuel prices, and tax exemptions are common causes that enhanced the market of EVs. Respondents highlighted prevalent issues of BEVs, including the rapid battery depletion, low battery capacity, electric inverter malfunctions, battery overheating, low performance in hot and cold climates, and inflating costs. Finally, this study recommends educational institutions to offer targeted training programs for EV maintenance and service, and the government should provide more incentives for this industry, and combat the influx of counterfeit charging accessories, batteries, and spare parts. Introduction: Older adults reported about 36 million falls in 2018. Although effective strategies are available to address risk factors and minimize fall risk, little is known about older adults' and healthcare providers' awareness of these strategies. This study describes and compares healthcare providers' and older adults' beliefs about fall prevention and strategies. Methods: Demographic and fall-related data for older adults were obtained from the 2019 fall cohort of Porter Novelli ConsumerStyles. Similar data from primary care practitioners, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants were gathered from the 2019 cohort of DocStyles. Results: Most providers (91.3%) and older adults (85.1%) believed falls can be prevented. Both providers and older adults were most likely to consider strength and balance exercises (90.7% and 82.8%, respectively) and making homes safer (90.5% and 79.9%, respectively) as strategies that help prevent falls. More providers reported that managing medications (84.2%) and tai chi (45.7%) can prevent falls compared to older adults (24.0% and 21.7%, respectively; P <.0001). Conclusion: More healthcare providers than older adults indicated evidence-based strategies exist to reduce falls. Increased patient and provider communication can increase awareness about the benefits of evidence-based strategies such as tai chi, strength and balance exercises, and medication management. This study aims to analyze the used lubricating oil of small Diesel engines under different conditions in order to monitor their instant health condition, indicate their useful life, and provide early warnings of failure progress. It is an attempt to monitor different oil properties together with oil contaminants to diagnose the possible failures before occurring and identify their root causes. It is an effective tool in the case where there are no historical data records for the engines. Specifically, used lubricating oil samples from eight Diesel-powered engines are analyzed as an important information source for early failure detection and decision support. Oil properties; kinematic viscosity, density, and total acidic number (TAN) were analyzed. Also, oil contaminants; wear debris particles, soot, and water content were also elucidated in attempting to predict engine health conditions, wear mechanisms, and useful life. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to analyze the wear debris particles. The root causes of engine failure were specified using the 5 Why’s method, and interviews with specialists, while the results were schematically presented using the Fishbone diagram. The analysis of oil viscosity showed that engines of high capacities performed better at high operating temperatures than small engines. Besides, the large oil imperfections are not directly related to the oil viscosity reduction but to the high oil TAN and the type and concentration of the oil impurities. Hydrogen has universally been considered a reliable source of future clean energy. Its energy conversion, processing, transportation, and storage are techno-economically promising for sustainable energy. This study attempts to maximize the production of H2 energy using nanocatalysts from waste aluminum chips, an abundant metal that is considered a potential storage tank of H2 energy with high energy density. The present study indicates that the use of waste aluminum chips in the production of H2 gas will be free of cost since the reaction by-product, Al2O3, is denser and can be sold at a higher price than the raw materials, which makes the production cost more efficient and feasible. The current framework investigates seven different copper oxide-based graphene nanocomposites that are synthesized by utilizing green methods and that are well-characterized in terms of their structural, morphological, and surface properties. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multi-layer graphene (MLG) are used as graphene substrates for CuO and Cu2O NPs, respectively. These graphene materials exhibited extraordinary catalytic activity, while their copper oxide composites exhibited a complete reaction with feasible techno-economic production. The results revealed that the H2 production yield and rates increased twofold with the use of these nanocatalysts. The present study recommends the optimum reactor design considerations and reaction parameters that minimize water vaporization in the reaction and suggests practical solutions to quantify and separate it. Furthermore, the present study affords an economic feasibility approach to producing H2 gas that is competitive and efficient. The cost of producing 1 kg of H2 gas from waste aluminum chips is USD 6.70, which is both economically feasible and technically applicable. The unit cost of H2 gas can be steeply reduced by building large-scale plants offering mass production. Finally, the predicted approach is applicable in large, medium, and small cities that can collect industrial waste aluminum in bulk to generate large-scale energy units. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. Falls among older adults (age ≥65) are a common and costly health issue. Knowing where falls occur and whether this location differs by sex and age can inform prevention strategies. Objective. To determine where injurious falls that result in emergency department (ED) visits commonly occur among older adults in the United States, and whether these locations differ by sex and age. Methods. Using 2015 National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury Program data we reviewed narratives for ED patients aged ≥65 who had an unintentional fall as the primary cause of injury. Results. More fall-related ED visits (71.6%) resulted from falls that occurred indoors. A higher percentage of men's falls occurred outside (38.3%) compared to women's (28.4%). More fall-related ED visits were due to falls at home (79.2%) compared to falls not at home (20.8%). The most common locations for a fall at home were the bedroom, bathroom, and stairs. Conclusion. The majority of falls resulting in ED visits among older adults occurred indoors and varied by sex and age. Knowing common locations of injurious falls can help older adults and caregivers prioritize home modifications. Objective: To describe and compare two age groups' knowledge of medications linked to falls and willingness to change these medications to reduce their fall risk. Method: We analyzed data from community‐dwelling adults age 55 and older (n = 1812): 855 adults aged 55 to 64 years and 957 older adults (65 and older) who participated in the 2016 summer wave of the ConsumerStyles survey, an annual Web‐based survey. The data are weighted to match the US Current Population Survey proportions on nine US Census Bureau demographic characteristics. Measurements: Survey respondents were asked about medication use, knowledge of side effects, their willingness to change their medications to reduce fall risk, communication in the previous year about fall risk with their healthcare provider, and their comfort in discussing fall risk with their healthcare provider. All data were weighted to match the 2016 population estimates. Descriptive statistics and χ2 (p ≤.05) were used to identify differences between the two age groups. Results: About one‐fifth of all respondents reported using at least one class of medication that increases fall risk. Older adults were less likely to report using medications for mood or sadness, less likely to report knowing the side effects of pain medications, and more willing to change their sleep medications compared with their younger counterparts. Among all respondents using these medication classes, less than one‐third knew the potential fall‐related side effects. However, most of them expressed willingness to change their medication if advised by their healthcare provider. Conclusion: Most older adults were unaware of potential fall risks associated with medications prescribed to address pain, difficulty sleeping, mood or sadness, and anxiety‐ or nervousness‐related health issues. Introduction: In 2021, among all age groups, falls ranked as the third leading cause of unintentional injury death in the USA. Unlike fatal data, which rely on death certificates as the gold standard, there is not a gold standard for non-fatal data. Non-fatal falls data are often based on insurance claims or administrative billing data. The purpose of our study is to compare three claims databases to estimate rates of unintentional fall-related hospitalisations in 2019, the most recent year of available data across the three sources., Methods: Three databases were used to produce incidence rates of fall-related hospitalisations for the year 2019: (1) Merative MarketScan research databases, (2) Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data and (3) Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) National Inpatient Sample. Inpatient falls were identified using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification codes. Incidence rates per 100 000 people were then produced across all three datasets by payer type. Unadjusted incidence rate ratios were estimated with corresponding 95% CIs., Results: There were wide disparities among fall rates between the three datasets by payer type. HCUP had the highest rate of falls among Medicare (1087.6 per 100 000) and commercial enrollees (74.7 per 100 000), while CMS had the highest rates of falls among Medicaid enrollees (148.0 per 100 000)., Conclusions: This study shows wide variation in fall hospitalisation rates based on the claims data used to estimate rates.
