Most people with epilepsy, particularly those from rural communities, do not seek medical care as they are convinced that solutions lie only with traditional healers (traditional leaders, prophets and community elders). Therefore, studying treatment-seeking behavior regarding this major neurological problem would provide additional knowledge and help to identify a gap which needs to be addressed when tackling related problems.Participants and Methods: This rural community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Gedeo zone, Ethiopia, among 755 participants. Data were collected using face-to-face interview-based questionnaires. Collected data were entered into EpiData version 3.01 and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify associated factors. The strengths of associations were presented as adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.Results: The prevalence of poor treatment-seeking behavior was 54.6% (95% CI 51.4, 58.2). Poor knowledge (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=3.21, 95% CI 2.14, 4.81), poor social support (AOR=2.48, 95% CI 1.12, 5.53), unfavorable attitude (AOR=1.84, 95% CI 1.34, 2.54) and having no history of experiencing others’ seizures (AOR=2.17, 95% CI 1.47, 3.2) were variables strongly associated with poor help-seeking behavior towards epilepsy.Conclusion: The study showed that more than half of the participants had poor treatment-seeking behavior towards epilepsy. This indicates the need to implement measures to raise community awareness regarding treatment options for epilepsy.Keywords: epilepsy, Ethiopia, rural residents, treatment-seeking behavior

Objective To make healthcare programmes more patient-centred and efficient in light of limited resources, it is crucial to ensure patient satisfaction. There is limited information on the overall level of satisfaction with Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune deficiency syndromes (HIV/AIDS) treatment and care services in Ethiopia. This meta-analysis aimed to generate a nationwide pooled estimate of the level of satisfaction with HIV/AIDS and associated factors by combining data from primary studies to provide a general overview of the effect across the country, aiming to informed policy decisions.Design Systematic review and meta-analysis.Data source PubMed, Scopus, Hinari, African journals online and Google Scholar were used to locate published studies.Eligibility criteria Observational studies assessing the level of satisfaction with HIV/AIDS care and treatment services and its associated factors among adult people living with HIV/AIDS receiving antiretroviral therapy in Ethiopia were included.Data extraction and synthesis Two authors extracted the data using a pre-established data extraction format and exported it to Stata V.17 for analysis. The Cochran-Q and I2 test statistics were used to measure the statistical heterogeneity among included studies. A random-effects meta-analysis model with the Der Simonian-Laird method was used to estimate the pooled effect size of satisfaction with HIV/AIDS care and treatment services with its 95% CI. Small study effects were assessed using Egger’s regression test at a 5% level of significance. A meta-regression analysis and a leave-one-out sensitivity analysis were also conducted.Results 24 studies were included. BackgroundHIV continues to be a significant global health issue, particularly affecting sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania. Knowing one’s HIV status is a crucial first step in combating HIV/AIDS and achieving the targets set for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. However, despite ongoing efforts, HIV testing coverage remains low in developing countries, including Tanzania, where testing among young people poses particular challenges. Therefore, this study, based on the 2022 Tanzanian Demographic and Health Survey, aims to identify the factors influencing HIV testing among young women through the lens of Anderson’s Behavioral Model.MethodsIn this study, we analyzed a weighted sample of 5,810 young women from the 2022 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS). Given the hierarchical structure of the DHS data and the binary nature of the outcome variable ‘ever tested for HIV,’ we employed a multilevel mixed-effect logistic regression model. The best-fitting model was identified using the deviance value. In the multivariable analysis, we calculated adjusted odds ratios (AORs) along with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the strength of associations between various predictors and HIV testing. Statistical significance was determined at a p-value of less than 0.05.ResultIn our study, the prevalence of HIV testing among young women was 60.18% (95% CI: 58.91 to 61.43%). Significant factors associated with HIV testing included age (AOR = 4.33, 95% CI [3.43, 5.45]), marital status (AOR = 2.31, 95% CI [1.76, 3.04]), knowledge of HIV prevention (AOR = 1.59, 95% CI [1.23, 2.04]), discriminatory attitudes towards HIV (AOR = 0.74, 95% CI [0.58, 0.95]), visiting healthcare facilities (AOR = 4.80, 95% CI [3.75, 6.14]), media exposure (AOR = 1.44, 95% CI [1.09, 1.90]), internet use (AOR = 1.56, 95% CI [1.02, 2.38]), and ever heard of STIs (AOR = 2.12, 95% CI [1.63, 2.77]).ConclusionOur study found that 60.18% of young women in Tanzania have been tested for HIV. Addressing barriers like stigma and improving access to healthcare and information through media and the internet can significantly boost HIV testing rates among young women, aiding the global effort to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030.The Anderson Behavioral Model emphasizes the importance of predisposing, enabling, and need factors in healthcare utilization, which aligns with our findings and underscores the necessity of a multifaceted approach to improve HIV testing rates.

Abstract Background Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a common neurological complication of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) that can significantly affect patients’ quality of life. In Ethiopia, children living with HIV are at an increased risk of developing peripheral neuropathy due to comorbidities such as anemia, tuberculosis, malnutrition, and poor socio-economic status. Our study aims to evaluate the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy among children living with HIV in Ethiopia using a simple clinical screening tool. Methods A health institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 148 children aged 5 to 18 years living with HIV who are receiving treatment at the antiretroviral therapy (ART) clinic of the randomly selected public health institutions in the Gamo zone. Abstract Background Missed nursing care refers to any aspect of care performed by nursing staff that is omitted or significantly delayed. Even though the potential impact of missing nursing care on maternal and fetal outcomes is significant, there is currently limited evidence regarding the extent of this issue specifically within the maternity wards. Therefore, this study aimed to assess missed nursing care and associated factors in the maternity wards of public hospitals in the Sidama region, Ethiopia 2022. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 361 nurses and midwives in maternity wards of Sidama region public hospitals from March 28 to April 26, 2022. Simple random sampling was used to select participants. The data was collected using the MISSCARE survey tool and analyzed with SPSS version 26. Simple linear and multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify the factors associated with missed nursing care. Results The overall mean missed nursing care score was 67 out of 130 (95% CI: 65.92, 68.02) and the average score for each nursing intervention was 2.58 out of 5 (95% CI: 2.54, 2.62). The intention to leave the institution (β = 3.812, 95% CI: 2.285, 5.340) and increasing weekly work hours (β = 0.203, 95% CI: 0.134, 0.272) were factors positively associated with missed nursing care. However, increased work experience (β= -0.963, 95%CI: -1.475, -0.452) and job satisfaction (β= -4.976, 95%CI: -6.431, -3.522) were negatively associated with missed nursing care. Conclusion This study found that the level of missed nursing care was significant. Factors positively associated with missed nursing care included an intention to leave the institution and an increase in weekly work hours. In contrast, an increase in work experience and higher job satisfaction were negatively associated with missed nursing care.

Abstract Background In almost every country in the world, mental health problems are alarmingly on the rise. There are various myths and beliefs regarding mental health across various communities’ that deviate from the scientific view. This may negatively affect treatment seeking and adherence among people with mental illness. We aimed to systematically review community perceptions of mental health problems in Ethiopia. Methods MEDLINE/Pub Med, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, Scopus/Science Direct, Hinari, and Google Scholar were systematically searched. The review was carried out following a mixed-method narrative synthesis approach and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. Five qualitative and twelve quantitative primary studies that focused on the community’s perceptions of mental health problems in Ethiopia were included. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidance for conducting a mixed-method systematic review approach was used. A narrative synthesis following thematic analysis was conducted using a combination of the transformed quantitative data and the data from qualitative studies. Results The review findings were classified into four domains, which are: perceived causes, identification symptoms, severity of mental disorders, and preferred treatment options. The community’s perceptions of the causes of mental health problems consist of supernatural agents, socio-economic factors, and biochemical factors. Perceptions of treatment options comprise: religious treatment, modern medicine, psychosocial support, and traditional treatment. Conclusion A variety of community perceptions towards mental health problems were seen. The community’s perceptions vary from person to person and among types of mental health problems. Considering community-held beliefs helps programmers and implementers to design prevention, control, and management strategies for mental health problems.

IntroductionInadequate ventilation and improper use of personal protective equipment are often observed in many occupational settings with a high risk of dust and other fine particle exposure. Workers who are exposed to dust at work may suffer from respiratory difficulties. Previous systematic reviews on organic dust exposure and its association with respiratory health outcomes did not provide a comprehensive assessment. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize the reported effects of organic dust exposure on lung function parameters among African industrial workers.MethodsA compressive literature search was conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Embase, the Web of Science, African Journals Online, and ScienceDirect databases to identify relevant studies for the review. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of the included studies. The lung function indices including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), the FEV1/FVC ratio, and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) were obtained from primary studies and analyzed using STATA version 17. The I2 test was used to assess the heterogeneity of studies. We used a random-effects model to estimate the pooled standard mean difference in lung function indices between organic dust-exposed and non-exposed industrial workers. To analyze publication bias, funnel plots and Egger’s test were applied.ResultsIn this systematic review and meta-analysis, 32 studies involving 7,085 participants were included from 13,529 identified studies. The estimated mean differences with 95% confidence intervals were as follows: −0.53 [−0.83 to −0.36] L for FVC, −0.60 [−0.77 to −0.43] L for FEV1, −0.43 [−0.57, −0.29] L for FEV1/FVC, and −0.69 [−0.88 to −0.50] L/min for PEFR.ConclusionThis systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that the lung function indices, such as FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and PEFR, were statistically significantly lower among organic dust-exposed industrial workers compared to non-exposed industrial workers. Abstract Background Abnormal uterine bleeding, a frequent gynecological problem among women of reproductive age, significantly affects their health and quality of life. Despite its problem, research on its extent and contributing factors in Ethiopia is scarce. Hence, this study is designed to determine the magnitude and factors associated with abnormal uterine bleeding among women visiting Dilla University General Hospital, Dilla, Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study design was conducted with 380 women of reproductive age at Dilla University General Hospital. Abstract BackgroundHydatidosis, caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, affect cattle by forming hydatid cyst in thier lungs, livers and pose great financial loss in animal production and country's economy by both direct and indirect effect. Despite its great economic and health importance, there is an absence of current information on cystic echinococcosis in cattle slaughtered at Wolaita Sodo municipality abattoir in Ethiopia. Objectives Current investigation determines the prevalence, organ distribution and fertility of hydatid cysts in cattle slaughtered at the Wolaita Sodo municipality abattoir in Ethiopia. Methods A cross‐sectional study was conducted from February, 2023, to October, 2023, at Wolaita Sodo municipality abattoir in southern Ethiopia, through regular meat examinations and cyst characterisation to determine the prevalence, organ distribution and fertility of hydatid cysts. Results The overall prevalence of hydatidosis recorede in current study was 17.9% (69/384) and has shown a statistically significant association (p < 0.05) with the body condition of cattle. However, there was no statistically significant association (p > 0.05) between the prevalence of hydatidosis and other risk factors such as sex, breed, production system and origin of animals. This study showed that the lungs and liver were the most affected organs in cattle, followed by the spleen and kidneys. On cyst characterisation, the majority of hydatid cysts were found sterile (55.4%) followed by fertile (38.8%) and calcified (8.7%) cysts. Out of 125 fertile hydatid cysts tested for survival, 18.8% (58/321) were viable and 20% (67/321) were nonviable. Conclusion The finding of this study shows that cystic echinococcus was important health threat of the cattle and widespread in the internal organs of affected cattle causing significant economic loss by condemning edible organs that are not suitable for human consumption. Therefore, urgent and integreted preventive action is needed to disrupt the life cycle of cystic echinococcosis to tackle subsequent financial loss and risk of zoonosis to humans in the study area.

BackgroundNon-communicable diseases are becoming a challenge for the health care system in Ethiopia, which has suffered a double burden from infectious and rapidly increasing non-communicable diseases. However, there is little information on health-promoting behavior in the study settings. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine health-promoting behaviors and its associated factors among adult's residents of Gedeo zone.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 705 adult residents of Gedeo zone, south Ethiopia, selected using a multi-stage sampling technique. Interviews administered through a structured questionnaire were used to collect the data. The data were entered using Kobo Collect and analyzed using Stata version 17. The baseline characteristics of the participants were summarized using descriptive statistics. The independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to compare two groups and more than two groups, respectively. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify the potential determinants of health-promoting behavior and its components. Statistically significant factors were declared at p-value of less than or equal to 0.05.ResultsThe overall means score for health-promoting behavior was 73.88 ± 16.79. Physical activity and spiritual growth had the lowest and highest mean scores, respectively. The variables: gender, marital status, education, family history of NCDs, health insurance status, perceived health status, knowledge of NCD risk factors, risk perception of NCDs, expected outcome, cues to action, and self-efficacy showed a statistically significant difference in overall health-promoting behavior. The total health-promoting behavior score was associated with age, gender, perceived health status, marital status, family history of NCDs, health insurance, knowledge of NCD risk factors, perceived threat, expected outcome, self-efficacy, and cues to action.Conclusion and recommendationsIn the study, the mean score of health-promoting behaviors was low. Socio-demographic and economic variables, family history of NCD, perceived health status, knowledge of NCD risk factors, perceived threat, expected outcome, self-efficacy, and cues to action affect health-promoting behaviors. Therefore, the study suggests establishing health promotion programs to increase residents' awareness of health-promoting lifestyles, empower them to adopt healthy lifestyles, and improve health outcomes by increasing self-efficacy, providing education, and creating supportive environments.

BackgroundMicrovascular complications are long-term complications that affect small blood vessels, usually developed in diabetes, and are primary causes of end-stage renal disease, several painful neuropathies, and blindness. Thus, this study aimed to determine diabetic microvascular complications and factors associated with them among patients with type 2 diabetes.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 378 type 2 diabetes patients. The presence of at least one diabetic microvascular complications diagnosed by physicians and found on the record was considered to have microvascular complications. The data was collected by reviewing the medical records of T2DM patients who were on follow-up from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021. The collected data was entered into EpiData version 3.1 and analyzed by Stata version 14. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to identify statistically significant risk factors for diabetic microvascular complications at p-value < 0.05.ResultsPatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus had a prevalence of diabetic microvascular complications of 26.5% (95% CI: 22.0%, 30.9%). Diabetic neuropathy was the highest (13.2%), followed by diabetic nephropathy (12.4%), and diabetic retinopathy (6.4%). Increasing age, poor glycemic control, hypertension comorbidity, anemia, positive proteinuria, a longer duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hypercholesterolemia were significantly associated factors with diabetic microvascular complications.ConclusionDiabetic microvascular complications were highly prevalent. Therefore, the study suggests that interventional strategies should be taken for poor glycemic control, hypertension comorbidity, anemia, positive proteinuria, and hypercholesterolemia to control the development of diabetic microvascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BackgroundObstetric fistula repair failure can result in increased depression, social isolation, financial burden for the woman, and fistula care programs. However, there is limited, comprehensive evidence on obstetric fistula repair failure in Sub-Saharan African countries. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of obstetric fistula repair failure and associated factors among women who underwent surgical repair in Sub-Saharan African countries.MethodsTo identify potential articles, a systematic search was done utilizing online databases (PubMed, Hinari, and Google Scholar). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Statement (PRISMA) guideline was used to report the review's findings. I2 test statistics were employed to examine study heterogeneity. A random-effects model was used to assess the pooled prevalence of obstetric fistula repair failure, and the association was determined using the log odds ratio. Publication bias was investigated using the funnel plot and Egger's statistical test at the 5% level of significance. Meta-regression and subgroup analysis were done to identify potential sources of heterogeneity. The data were analyzed using STATA version 17 statistical software.ResultsA total of 24 articles with 9866 study participants from 13 Sub-Saharan African countries were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of obstetric fistula repair failure in sub-Saharan Africa was 24.92% [95% CI: 20.34-29.50%]. The sub-group analysis by country revealed that the highest prevalence was in Angola (58%, 95% CI: 53.20-62.80%) and the lowest in Rwanda (13.9, 95% CI: 9.79-18.01%). Total urethral damage [OR = 3.50, 95% CI: 2.09, 4.91], large fistula [OR = 3.09, 95% CI: (2.00, 4.10)], duration of labor [OR = 0.45, 95% CI: 0.27, 0.76], and previous fistula repair [OR = 2.70, 95% CI: 1.94, 3.45] were factors associated with obstetric fistula repair failure.ConclusionWomen who received surgical treatment for obstetric fistulas in Sub-Saharan African countries experienced more repair failures than the WHO standards. Obstetric fistula repair failure was affected by urethral damage, fistula size, duration of labor, types of fistula, and history of previous repairs. Therefore, we suggest policy measures specific to each country to provide special attention to the prevention of all risk factors, including poor nutrition, multiparty, obstructed labor, and maternal age, which can result in conditions like large fistulas, urethral damage, and repeat repair, in order to reduce obstetric fistula repair failure.

BackgroundThe provision of equitable and accessible healthcare is one of the goals of universal health coverage. However, due to high out-of-pocket payments, people in the world lack sufficient health services, especially in developing countries. Thus, many low and middle-income countries introduced different prepayment mechanisms to reduce large out-of-pocket payments and overcome financial barriers to accessing health care. Though many studies were conducted on willingness to pay for social health insurance in Ethiopia, there is no aggregated data at the national level. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled magnitude of willingness to pay for social health insurance and its associated factors among public servants in Ethiopia.MethodStudies conducted before June 1, 2022, were retrieved from electronic databases (PubMed/Medline, Science Direct, African Journals Online, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) as well as from Universities' digital repositories. Data were extracted using a data extraction format prepared in Microsoft Excel and the analysis was performed using STATA 16 statistical software. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for cross-sectional studies. To evaluate publication bias, a funnel plot, and Egger's regression test were utilized. The study's heterogeneity was determined using Cochrane Q test statistics and the I2 test. To determine the pooled effect size, odds ratio, and 95% confidence intervals across studies, the DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model was used. Subgroup analysis was conducted by region, sample size, and publication year. The influence of a single study on the whole estimate was determined via sensitivity analysis.ResultTo estimate the pooled magnitude of willingness to pay for the Social Health insurance scheme in Ethiopia, twenty articles with a total of 8744 participants were included in the review. The pooled magnitude of willingness to pay for Social Health Insurance in Ethiopia was 49.62% (95% CI: 36.41-62.82). Monthly salary (OR = 6.52; 95% CI:3.67,11.58), having the degree and above educational status (OR = 5.52; 95%CI:4.42,7.17), large family size(OR = 3.69; 95% CI:1.10,12.36), having the difficulty of paying the bill(OR = 3.24; 95%CI: 1.51, 6.96), good quality of services(OR = 4.20; 95%CI:1.97, 8.95), having favourable attitude (OR = 5.28; 95%CI:1.45, 19.18) and awareness of social health insurance scheme (OR = 3.09;95% CI:2.12,4.48) were statistically associated with willingness to pay for Social health insurance scheme.ConclusionsIn this review, the magnitude of willingness to pay for Social Health insurance was low among public Civil servants in Ethiopia. Willingness to pay for Social Health Insurance was significantly associated with monthly salary, educational status, family size, the difficulty of paying medical bills, quality of healthcare services, awareness, and attitude towards the Social Health Insurance program. Hence, it's recommended to conduct awareness creation through on-the-job training about Social Health Insurance benefit packages and principles to improve the willingness to pay among public servants.

Background. Diabetic nephropathy is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease, and it brings high morbidity and mortality. Globally, the predominant rise in type II diabetes prevalence significantly increases the incidence of diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, timely diagnosis and prompt management of diabetic nephropathy and early identification of predictors are essential. Thus, this study aimed to determine the incidence and predictors of diabetic nephropathy among type II diabetes mellitus patients. Methods. A retrospective follow-up study was conducted among 532 type II diabetes patients who enrolled at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. The extracted data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 and analyzed by Stata version 14. A bivariate and multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was fitted to identify predictors of diabetic nephropathy. The Cox proportional hazards assumption was checked using the Schoenfeld residual test, and the goodness of fit of the model was checked using the Cox–Snell residual test. An adjusted hazard ratio with a 95% confidence interval and P values were used to identify statistically significant predictors. Results. The overall incidence rate of diabetic nephropathy was 2.71 cases (95% CI: 2.12, 3.47) per 1,000 person-months of observation. Age (AHR = 1.027; 95% CI = 1.005, 1.049), fasting blood sugar (AHR = 1.010; 95% CI = 1.007, 1.013), and systolic blood pressure (AHR = 1.050; 95% CI = 1.031,1.069) were significant positive predictors of diabetic nephropathy, whereas the duration of diabetes longer than five years (AHR = 0.20; 95% CI = 0.09, 0.44) was a protective predictor for the development of diabetic nephropathy. Conclusion. The incidence rate of diabetic nephropathy was high. Age, fasting blood sugar, systolic blood pressure, and duration of diabetes were found to be independent predictors of diabetic nephropathy. To overcome this public health problem, prompt and effective strategies should be designed based on identified predictors to prevent the development of diabetic nephropathy.

Background. Eimeriosis, which is caused by several Eimeria species, is a protozoan disease affecting the cattle worldwide. The current investigation was aimed at ascertaining the prevalence of bovine eimeriosis, evaluation of the involved risk variables, and identification of the several Eimeria species that were prevalent in the Kacha Bira district of central Ethiopia. Methods. A cross-sectional coprological assessment of Bovine coccidiosis and its associated risk factors through a simple random sampling technique was conducted from January 2021 to December 2022. Results. The cumulative prevalence of coccidia was 17.83% (82/460) in the current investigation, with Eimeria bovis, Eimeria zuernii, and mixed infections having a respective prevalence of 7.83%, 3.25%, and 6.74%. From the anticipated risk factors, cattle age and months of the year have revealed a statistically significant (p0.05) relationships between the coccidia infection and the sex and breed of cattle and the season. Conclusion. During the study, a high prevalence rate of bovine eimeriosis was recorded. Thus, a further detailed study involving molecular techniques to identify prevailing Eimeria species is paramount to develop and put into effect evidence-based control strategies to tackle the prevalence and subsequent effect of eimeriosis.

Abstract Background Indoor residual spraying (IRS) has been the main tool used to control malaria. Reducing the life span and the density of the vector mosquitoes are direct effects of IRS towards restricting malaria transmission. Residents must not wash or re-plaster walls after the spray application for at least 6 months to fight against malaria with IRS. This study sought to assess the alteration of the sprayed wall after the IRS operation and associated factors among households in the Boricha district. Methods Community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 608 households selected using multi-stage sampling. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analysed by SPSS version 25. Both bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis was done. Finally, the strength of the association was measured based on AOR with 95% CI and statistical significance was declared at a p-value less than 0.05. Result From the total of 608 sprayed houses included in the study, 37.3% (95% CI: 33.41% – 41.15%) were found to have altered sprayed walls. The highest class of wealth index category (AOR = 2.50; 95% CI: 1.19, 5.16), low level of comprehensive knowledge about IRS (AOR = 6.08; 95% CI: 3.37, 10.94), did not get information within 2 weeks before spray (AOR = 2.09; 95% CI: 1.43, 3.05), absence of supervision after the spray operation (AOR = 1.77; 95% CI: 1.27, 2.73) and walking distance to nearest health facility (AOR = 2.39; 95% CI: 1.63, 3.35) remained significant factors of altering of the sprayed wall after IRS. Conclusion The prevalence of alteration was relatively high. The highest socio-economic status, poor knowledge about indoor residual spraying, lack of information about IRS within two weeks before spray, absence of supervision after IRS, and walking distance of more than 30 min to reach the nearest health post were the factors affecting the alteration status of the sprayed wall. Future efforts to focus on successive awareness creation activities should be done before and after IRS operation to the community by concerned bodies.

Abstract Food taboos have a negative impact on pregnant women and their fetuses by preventing them from consuming vital foods. Previous research found that pregnant women avoided certain foods during their pregnancy for a variety of reasons. This review aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of food taboo practices and associated factors in Ethiopia. In compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline, we searched the literature using PubMed/MEDLINE, AJOL (African Journal Online), HINARI, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Google electronic databases. The random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of food taboo and its determinants at a 95% confidence interval with their respective odds ratios. The pooled food taboo practice among Ethiopian pregnant women was 34.22% (95% CI 25.47–42.96), and after adjustment for publication bias with the trim-and-fill analysis, the pooled food taboo practice of pregnant women was changed to 21.31% (95% CI: 10.85–31.67%). Having less than a secondary education level (OR = 3.57; 95% CI 1.43–8.89), having no ANC follow-up (OR = 4.35; 95% CI 1.12–16.94), and being a rural resident (OR = 3.08; 95% CI 1.14–8.28) were the significant factors. Dairy products, some fruits, green leafy vegetables, meat, and honey are among the taboo foods. The most frequently stated reasons for this taboo practice were: fear of producing a big fetus, which is difficult during delivery; attachment to the fetus's body or head; and fear of fetal abnormality.

Abstract Background Breast milk is the first natural food for babies. It has nutritional, immunological, developmental, psychological, societal and environmental advantages. Failing to feed children for twenty-four months has so many negative consequences to children. Though studies have well documented the duration of breast feeding in the first six months, the proportion of women completing the recommended duration and factors associated with it has not been well investigated in rural places of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap in evidence among mothers with children aged 2 to 3 years in Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance Site in 2021 E.C. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in all kebeles of the surveillance site by employing multi-stage sampling technique. Descriptive statistics was done to summarize findings and binary logistics regression model was used to identify factors significantly associated with early breast-feeding cessation respectively. OR with its 95% CI was obtained to quantify the degree of association between explanatory variables and early breastfeeding cessation. Result The proportion of early cessations of breast feeding was 29.30% (25.02, 33.64%). Being from a household with no fathers ‘education or primary education [AOR=0.22; 95%CI (0.07, 0.74)] and [AOR=0.30; 95%CI (0.12, 0.76)], farmer mothers [AOR=6.40; 95%CI: (1.38, 29.74)], birth interval of less than 2 years [AOR=2.07; 95%CI: (1.03, 4.16)], and with mothers’ one or two to three antenatal care visits [AOR = 2.73; 95%CI: (1.27,5.88)] were factors significantly associated with early cessations of breast feeding. Conclusion and recommendation The proportion of early cessations of breast feeding was high. Father’s education, being farmer, birth interval and ante natal care visit were significant factors. Health education about proper breast feeding practice and improving ante natal care attendance might improve premature cessation of breast feeding among women.

In household environments, the improper handling of children's feces can be a significant contaminant, raising a high risk of child exposure. Thus, the objective of this study was to pool the available evidence on the prevalence of safe child feces disposal practices and their association with reported childhood diarrhea in low-income and middle-income countries. PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane Library databases, Ovid Medline, Google Scholar, and references of other studies were searched. The search was limited to studies published in English-language literature. Two independent reviewers used an appropriate tool to critically appraise the selected studies. Stata version 16 was used for the analysis. The pooled prevalence of unsafe disposal of children's feces among 20 studies was 52.63% (95% CI: 0.43–0.62). Overall, the meta-analysis found that unsafe disposal practices insignificantly increased the risk of diarrhea by 4% (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 0.84–1.24). In the subgroup analysis, unsafe disposal of children's feces decreased the risk of diarrhea in Oceania (OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.62–0.88) and increased in Asia (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.25–1.41). In conclusion, the prevalence of unsafe child feces disposal practices was high. There was no significant association between unsafe child feces disposal practices and diarrhea. HIGHLIGHTS This study aimed to pool the extent of disposal of children's feces and its association with diarrhea in children.; This systematic review and meta-analysis included 19 published articles and 1 unpublished study.; The pooled prevalence of unsafe maternal/guardian disposal practices for child feces in this study was high.; Unsafe disposal practices for children's feces insignificantly increased the likelihood of diarrhea in children.;

Bovine fasciolosis caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, is a neglected tropical snail-borne trematode disease of cattle that poses an adverse effect on animals' health culminating in economic damage. Cross-sectional investigation on coprological and postmortem assessment and economic significance of bovine fasciolosis in cattle slaughtered at Tarcha Municipal Abattoir, Southern Ethiopia through simple random sampling techniques was conducted from December 2020 to August 2021. Out of 384 cattle examined, 20.3% and 29.94% were found harboring Fasciola through coprological examination and postmortem examination respectively. The leading cause of fasciolosis in the study area was Fasciola gigantica (53.9%) as compared to F. hepatica (46.1%). The investigation revealed that the sex, origin, and body condition of the cattle has a statistically significant effect on the prevalence of bovine fasciolosis. The odds of male animals infested with fasciolosis were 2.25 times higher than female cattle and those of poor body-conditioned cattle were three times higher than cattle with good body condition. In postmortem examination, an average of 6 flukes were found in a single infested liver and the mean fluke count was (10 ± 1.97) in severely infested livers while in lightly infested livers (3± 1.79). Considering postmortem examination as the gold standard for diagnosis of fasciolosis, the sensitivity of the direct sedimentation technique was found to be 68% and the specificity 100% with substantial agreement (k = 0.74) between the two methods. The estimated yearly direct financial losses incurred owing to fasciolosis was around 2,227,536 2, Birr (47,945.24 USD). Thus, bovine fasciolosis is one of the economically important animal diseases in the study area, which necessitates integrated control measures to tackle its effect on animal health and subsequent economic impact.

Background: Obstetric fistula among women of reproductive age is a significant public health issue in developing countries, including Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the pooled awareness of obstetric fistula among women of reproductive age in Sub-Saharan Africa and its variation between countries have not yet been studied. Hence, the review aims to assess variability and awareness of obstetric fistula among women of reproductive age in Sub-Saharan African Countries. Method: Articles were searched using different electronic databases, such as PubMed, Web of science, science direct (Scopus), Google scholar, and HINARI and manual search without regard to publication date. A random-effects model was used to ascertain the pooled prevalence of obstetric fistula awareness among women of reproductive age in Sub-Saharan Africa. Publication bias was checked by using funnel plot and Egger's test at a 5% level of significance. I2 test statistics was performed to evaluate heterogeneity among included studies. In addition, to identify the possible reason for the potential heterogeneity between the studies, sub-group and meta-regression analyses were conducted. A sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the impact of individual research on the overall results. The data were extracted by using Microsoft excel and analyzed using statistical software STATA/SE version 17. Result: A total of 22 studies with 79,693 women of reproductive age were included in this systematic review and meta-analyses. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the pooled prevalence of awareness towards obstetric fistula among women of reproductive age was 40.85% (95% CI: 33.48, 48.22%). Analysis of the subgroups by specific countries revealed significant variation. The highest awareness of obstetric fistula was found among Tanzanian women of reproductive age (61.10%, 95% CI: 55.87–66.33%), whereas the lowest awareness was found in research from the Gambia (12.80%, 95% CI: 12.20–13.40%).The likelihood of obstetric fistula awareness were lower by a factor of 0.424 among studies with sample sizes greater than 3542 (β = −0.424 (95% CI: −0.767 to 0.081), p -value

Abstract Soil stabilization is the art and science of improving the engineering properties of soils. The properties of problematic soils can be improved by blending appropriate amount of insitu soil, aggregates and bioenzymes. In the present study, four bacterial strains: Sporosarcina pasteurii, Bacillus paramycoides, Citrobacter sedlakii, and Enterobacter bugadensis were used to produce bioenzymes using urea supplemented molasses as a substrate via submerged fermentation. The crude bioenzyme was mixed with modified soil blended with 40% black cotton soil, 30% aggregate and 30% river sand; then tested after curing for 7 days. The test results revealed that except soil samples treated with bioenzyme of Enterobacter bugadensis, all treated soil samples showed improved plasticity index (18–55%) and liquid limit (5–44%). Soil samples treated with bioenzyme of Bacillus paramycoides, Citrobacter sedlakii and Sporosarcina pasteurii showed higher CBR values of 12.9%, 12.27%, and 11.95% respectively. On the other hand, free swell showed reduction in soil samples treated with bioenzymes of Sporosarcina pasteurii (47.37%), Bacillus paramycoides (30%), and Citrobacter sedlakii (10.53%). The highest percentage improvement of linear shrinkage was recorded for soil sample treated with bioenzymes of Sporosarcina pasteuri (39.65%), followed by Permazyme (10.44%), Citrobacter sedlakii (8.4%) and Bacillus paramycoides (8.34%). Whereas, the highest percentage improvement in MDD was recorded in permazyme treated soil (11.92%) followed by molasses (8.29%), Bacillus paramycoides (1.92%), and Enterobacter bugadensis (0.73%). The lowest optimum moisture content (9.3%) was recorded in soil treated with permazyme. Triaxial test analysis also showed improvement in both cohesion and angle of friction in bioenzyme treated soils. From the test results it was concluded that it is possible to treat expansive black cotton soils using bioenzymes produced from low cost substrates such as molasses and reduce the cost of construction and environmental carbon emission.

Abstract Introduction Undernutrition is a serious global health issue, and stunting is a key indicator of children's nutritional status which results from long-term deprivation of basic needs. Ethiopia, the largest and most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa, has the greatest rate of stunting among children under the age of five, yet the problem is unevenly distributed across the country. Thus, we investigate spatial heterogeneity and explore spatial projection of stunting among under-five children. Further, spatial predictors of stunting were assessed using geospatial regression models. Methods The Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys (EDHS) data from 2011, 2016, and 2019 were examined using a geostatistical technique that took into account spatial autocorrelation. Ordinary kriging was used to interpolate stunting data, and Kulldorff spatial scan statistics were used to identify spatial clusters with high and low stunting prevalence. In spatial regression modeling, the ordinary least square (OLS) model was employed to investigate spatial predictors of stunting and to examine local spatial variations geographically weighted regression (GWR) and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) models were employed. Results Overall, stunting prevalence was decreased from 44.42% [95%, CI: 0.425–0.444] in 2011 to 36.77% [95%, CI: 0.349–0.375] in 2019. Across three waves of EDHS, clusters with a high prevalence of stunting in children under 5 years were consistently observed in northern Ethiopia stretching in Tigray, Amhara, Afar, and Benishangul-Gumuz. Another area of very high stunting incidence was observed in the Southern parts of Ethiopia and the Somali region of Ethiopia. Our spatial regression analysis revealed that the observed geographical variation of under-five stunting significantly correlated with poor sanitation, poor wealth index, inadequate diet, residency, and mothers' education. Conclusions In Ethiopia, substantial progress has been made in decreasing stunting among children under the age of 5 years; although disparities varied in some areas and districts between surveys, the pattern generally remained constant over time. These findings suggest a need for region and district-specific policies where priority should be given to children in areas where most likely to exhibit high-risk stunting.

Abstract Background People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are frequently confronted with severe social issues such as rejection, abandonment, criticism, and stigma. This would negatively affect their quality of life. Several studies have been conducted so far to assess factors affecting the health-related quality of life among people living with HIV/AIDS who are on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Ethiopia. However, to our knowledge, there is no previous study that has summarized the results of the studies that investigated health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among PLWHA in Ethiopia. Therefore, the purpose of this review was to estimate the pooled prevalence of HRQOL and its association with social support among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) on ART in Ethiopia. Methods A systematic search was carried out using several electronic databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Cochrane electronic), Google Scholar, Google, and a manual search of the literature on health-related quality of life among people living with HIV/AIDS who are on ART. A Microsoft Excel data extraction sheet was used to extract pertinent data from an individual study. To assess the heterogeneity of primary articles, the Cochrane Q test statistics and the I2 test were carried out, and a random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of HRQOL. Result Out of the 493 articles reviewed, ten with a total of 3257 study participants were eligible for meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of HRQOL among people living with HIV/AIDS who are on antiretroviral therapy in Ethiopia was 45.27%. We found that strong perceived social support was significantly associated with higher levels of subjectively perceived HRQOL. PLWHA who were on ART and had good social support were four times more likely to report higher HRQOL when compared to their counterparts [AOR = 4.01, 95% CI 3.07–5.23]. Conclusion A substantial number of PLWHA had poor HRQOL in Ethiopia. Social support was significantly associated with HRQOL among people living with HIV/AIDS. Hence, it’s recommended to encourage suitable intervention at every follow-up visit, and psycho-social support is also warranted to improve the quality of life.

Background: Hand-washing with soap is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing the global infectious disease burden, particularly diarrhea and acute respiratory infections. The World Health Organization and United Nations Children's Fund report shows that in twenty-eight developing countries, more than one quarter of the population had no hand washing facility at home. This study aimed to assess hand washing practice and associated factors among mothers from model and non-model households in Bibugn district, North West Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based comparative cross-sectional survey was employed. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select households. Data was collected using a structured interview questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 20. A descriptive analysis was presented using texts, tables, and figures. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression was used to detect the potential difference between variables. Results: Mothers' hand washing practice with water and soap/ash at critical times was 20.3%. Hand washing practice at critical times shows significant differences between model and non-model households. Mothers' who had knowledge 3.49 times (AOR: 3.49, 95% CI: 2.05, 5.96), access to adequate water 2.22 times (AOR: 2.22, 95% CI: 1.36, 3.77), and hand washing facilities 1.88 times (AOR: 1.88, 95% CI: 1.18, 2.98) were more likely to practice hand washing than their counterparts. Conclusion: One fifth of mothers practice hand washing with water and soap or ash at critical times in the study area. Model households were better at hand washing practice than non-model households’. Expanding the model household program, availing hand-washing facilities, increasing water accessibility, and strengthening awareness creation were important to improving hand-washing practice.

BackgroundOccupational respiratory disorders are a major global public health concern among workers exposed to dust particles in dust-generating workplaces. Despite fragmented research findings on the magnitude of respiratory problems and the lack of a national occupational respiratory disease recording and reporting system at the Ethiopian factory, the prevalence of respiratory symptoms among factory workers were unknown. Therefore, the aim of this meta-analysis was to summarize and pool estimates from studies that reported the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and predictors among Ethiopian factory workers who worked in dusty environments.MethodsA systematic literature searches were conducted using electronic databases (PubMed, Science Direct, African Journals Online, and Web of Science). The primary and secondary outcomes were prevalence of respiratory symptoms and predictors, respectively. The STATA version 17 was used to analyze the data. A random effect meta-analysis model was used. Eggers test with p-value less than 5%, as well as the funnel plot, were used to assess publication bias.ResultsThe searches yielded 1596 articles, 15 of which were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of respiratory symptoms among Ethiopian factory workers was 54.96% [95% confidence interval (CI):49.33-60.59%]. Lack of occupational health and safety (OSH) training [Odds Ratio (OR) = 2.34, 95%CI:1.56-3.52], work experience of over 5 years [OR = 3.19, 95%CI: 1.33-7.65], not using personal protective equipment (PPE) [OR = 1.76, 95%CI:1.30-2.39], and working more than eight hours per day [OR = 1.89, 95%CI:1.16-3.05] were all significant predictors of respiratory symptoms.ConclusionThe prevalence of respiratory symptom was found to be high in Ethiopian factory workers. To prevent workers from being exposed to dust, regular provision and monitoring of PPE use, workers OSH training, and adequate ventilation in the workplace should be implemented.

Artificial insemination (AI) is among the most effective reproductive biotechnologies that afford widespread propagation of genes carried by superior males. A cross-sectional study followed by a simple random sampling technique was conducted from December 2021 to May 2022 to assess the constraints of artificial insemination (AI) provision in and around Kacha Bira district, Southern Ethiopia, using a structured questionnaire. A total of 200 respondents were surveyed accordingly. In this study, the education level of farmers revealed no statistically significant difference P>0.05 with the identification of time of insemination. Conception failure (62.5%), unavailability of artificial insemination technicians (7.5%), dystocia (3.5%), and both conception failure and unavailability of artificial insemination technicians (4.5%) were found to be the major constraints of AI service in the study area according to dairy cattle owners’ response and revealed a statistically significant difference P

Background. Rehospitalization, treatment resistance, and impairment are all possible outcomes of a schizophrenia relapse, which has a severe impact on patients, families, and the healthcare system. However, little is known regarding the time to relapse and relapse predictors in Ethiopia and in the study settings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the time to relapse and relapse predictors in patients with schizophrenia at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northern Ethiopia. Methods. A retrospective cohort study was carried out among 273 schizophrenia patients discharged from Ayder Comprehensive and Specialty Hospital between January 2015 and January 2019. The data was taken from the patient’s medical record and was chosen using a systematic random sampling procedure. A standardized data collection checklist was employed. The survival experiences of participants were compiled using a life table. Both univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used for variable selection. Finally, after confirming the model’s diagnosis and assumptions, factors with a p value of less than 0.05 were declared to be statistically significant predictors of schizophrenia relapse. Results. In this study, the incidence of relapse was 2.9 per 100 person-months (PMs) and the median time to relapse of 13 months (interquartile range: 6–23 months). Being divorced (AHR=2.50, 95% CI: 1.18-5.28), not adhering to treatment (AHR=5.7, 95% CI: 3.03-10.74), and substance abuse (AHR=1.8, 95% CI: 1.01-3.22) were risk factors for increasing schizophrenia relapse. Age (AHR=0.65, 95% CI: 0.34-0.88) and length of first hospitalization (AHR=0.69, 95% CI: 0.57-0.86) were factors that decreased schizophrenia relapse. Conclusion and Recommendation. In this study, out of 100 patients with schizophrenia followed up for a month, three had a relapse, and the highest risk factor for relapse was treatment nonadherence, followed by being divorced and substance misuse. As a result, it is advised that all parties involved focus on early detection and taking preventive measures against schizophrenia relapse, as well as providing regular psychoeducation about the significance of treatment adherence and connecting patients with substance misuse to substance rehabilitation centers.

BackgroundData on the magnitude of road traffic accidents (RTAs) were mostly obtained through police records and hospital registration data. However, insufficient data reporting masked the gravity of the problem, and little attention was paid to the magnitude and correlation of road traffic accidents from the driver's perspective. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of RTA and related factors among drivers.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study involving 316 drivers was conducted in Southern Ethiopia. The participants were chosen using a systematic random sample technique, and the data were obtained using an interview-administered structured questionnaire. To analyze the data, SPSS software (version 20) was employed. In addition to descriptive statistics, binary logistic regression analysis was also employed to find factors connected to traffic accidents. RTA factors were considered statistically significant if they had a P-value of 0.05 or below in the multivariate analysis.ResultThe RTA among drivers was 126 (39.9%) (95% confidence interval (CI): 34.2–45.6%) in the previous year. The following factors were associated with RTA: vehicle maintenance (AOR = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.09, 0.96), media utilization (AOR = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.65), participation in driving-related training (AOR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.28, 0.91), punishment for prior traffic violations (AOR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.47, 0.83), and risky driving behavior (AOR = 7.89, 95% CI: 3.22, 12.38).ConclusionTwo-fifths of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Risky driving behaviors, vehicle maintenance, media usage, attending driving-related training in the previous 2 years, and prior experience with traffic police punishment or warning were all strongly linked to road traffic accidents. In light of these statistics, the Federal Ministry of Transport of Ethiopia and other stakeholders should support making it mandatory for drivers to check their vehicles' safety, provide them with safety training, raise awareness about vehicle maintenance and risky driving behaviors, and enforce strict penalties for traffic violations.

Background: Induced abortion is the intentional termination of pregnancy before the 28th weeks of gestation. Despite the urgency of the situation, little is known about the factors that lead to induced abortion. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify determinants of repeated induced abortion among reproductive age group women at health facilities of Sidama region, Ethiopia. Methods: Unmatched case-control study had been done. A total of 116 cases and 234 controls were included in the study. Cases were women with two or more induced abortions and controls with one induced abortion. Data was entered to Epi data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS 20 for analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis with 95% confidence interval was done. Result: A total of 116 cases and 234 controls completed the interview with response rate of 95% and 94.9% for cases and controls. Urban resident (AOR, 95% CI = 4.9 [2.1–11.3]), primary education (AOR, 95% CI = 0.21 [0.06–0.8]), multiple sexual partner (AOR,95% CI = 2 [1.1–3.7]), fertility awareness (AOR,95% CI = 6.8 [2.5–18.2]) ,age at first sex (AOR,95% CI = 4 [1.9–8.7]) and not perceived abortion as painful procedure (AOR, 95% CI = 2.5 [1.2–5.3]) were significant factors of induced abortion. Conclusion: Residence, education, number of sexual partner, age at first sex, fertility awareness and perception of abortion pain were determinant factors. Education, health information, family free discussion & reproductive health service utilization should be promoted.

Background: Household water treatment and handling is an important component of a global strategy to provide safe water to millions of people who live without adequate water currently. Household water treatment at the point of use also helps to improve drinking water quality for millions who suffer due to contamination of their drinking water. This study aims to assess household-level water treatment practices and associated factors in Southern Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among selected households using a systematical random sampling technique in Bule town. Data was collected using a pretested, structured questionnaire and analyzed using STATA version 16. A variable with a P -value ⩽ .25 in bi-variable regression was entered into multivariable regression and then a variable with a P -value ⩽ .05 was taken as statistically significant. Results: The study found that only 29.9% (with a 95% CI: 25.3-34.6) of households have good water treatment practices for drinking purposes. Regarding predictors of household-level water treatment practices, respondents who had good knowledge were 5 times (AOR = 6.98, 95% CI = 4.01-11.9) more likely to practice household-level water treatment than their counterparts. In addition, respondents who earn more than 3000 ETB per month are twofold more likely to practice household water treatment than those with an average monthly income of less than 1000 ETB (AOR = 2.37, 95% CI = 1.22-4.60). Conclusions: Household-level water treatment was less common in Bule town. The household’s monthly income and their knowledge status were found to be the determinants of household-level water treatment practices in the study area.

Vaccines work by stimulating either humoral or cell-mediated immunity or both to differentiate. Even though vaccination is the powerful and cost-effective weapon of disease prevention and control of infectious and non infectious diseases, there are factors those, hinder its effectiveness (constraints of vaccine effectiveness). These factors are technical constraints, pathogen-related constraints, vaccine-related factors, host-related and environmental and management-related constraints. While planning a vaccination regimen, it is important to test the potency of the vaccine, whether it much with circulating serotype, availability of cold chain, skilled manpower, the status of the target group and weather condition. Vaccine epidemiology, the study of vaccine interactions and impacts on the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases also has an impact on vaccine effectiveness. it includes basic reproductive number, the force of infection, herd immunity, and epidemiologic shift. Some review papers mostly deal with constraints of specific vaccines and species of animals and with a specific constraint of the vaccine. However, the papers which review all common constraints of vaccine are limited. Therefore, this review paper is to address the most common constraints on the effectiveness of vaccines in all animal species and to highlight on evaluation of vaccine effectiveness and epidemiology.

Background: In both residential and hospital indoor environments, humans can be exposed to airborne microorganisms. The hospital’s indoor air may contain a large number of disease-causing agents brought in by patients, staff, students, visitors, ventilation, or the outside. Hospitalized patients are at a higher risk of infection due to confined spaces, crowdedness, and poor infection prevention practices, which can accumulate and create favorable conditions for the growth and multiplication of microorganisms. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the indoor air bacterial load in Dilla University Hospital, Southern Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study design was used to assess the bacterial load in the indoor air at Dilla University Hospital. To determine the bacterial load, a passive air sampling technique was used. The settle plate method was used to collect data, which involved exposing Petri-dishes filled with blood agar media to the indoor air of the sampled rooms for 60 minutes. Result: A total of 72 indoor air samples were collected once a week for 2 weeks at 14-day intervals from 18 rooms in 8 wards, and samples were collected twice a day in the morning and afternoon. The mean bacterial concentrations ranged from 450 to 1585.83 CFU/m 3 after 60 minutes of culture media exposure. The mean bacterial concentrations in the obstetrics, surgical, pediatric, gynecology, and medical wards exceeded WHO guidelines. A high indoor air bacterial load was found in 58 (80.6%) of the samples in this study. Gram-positive bacteria in the air were the most common 51 (71%) of the bacterial population measured in all indoor environments. Fungal growth was found in 65 (90.3%) of the samples. Temperatures (26.5°C-28.3°C) and relative humidity (61.1%-67.8%) in the rooms were both above WHO guidelines, creating favorable conditions for bacterial growth and multiplication. Conclusion: The majority of the wards at Dilla University Hospital had bacterial loads in the air that exceeded WHO guidelines. Overcrowding, high temperatures, inadequate ventilation, improper waste management, and a lack of traffic flow control mechanisms could all contribute to a high concentration of bacteria in the indoor air. To control the introduction of microorganisms by patients, students, caregivers, and visitors, it is critical to regularly monitor indoor air bacterial load and implement infection prevention and control measures.

Objectives: This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of antibiotics non-adherence and its associated factor among households in southern Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 323 randomly selected households in Wenago town. To collect the data, structured questionnaire was used. Categorical variables were represented by frequency and percentage. For continuous variables, the mean value and standard deviation were used. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors related to antibiotic non-adherence. Finally, for significant factors with p -values less than 0.05, the adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was calculated and evaluated. Results: The prevalence of antibiotic non-adherence in the household was 194 (60.1%) (95% confidence interval = 55.1–65.6). Remission of symptoms (63%) is one of the top reasons for antibiotic non-adherence in the home. Male sex (adjusted odds ratio = 1.77, 95% confidence interval = 1.03–3.08), lower educational status (adjusted odds ratio = 3.42, 95% confidence interval = 1.51–7.75; adjusted odds ratio = 2.37, confidence interval = 1.12–5.02), poor attitude toward antibiotics use (adjusted odds ratio = 1.89; 95% confidence interval = 1.23–3.04), poor knowledge about antibiotics use (adjusted odds ratio = 1.34; 95% confidence interval = 1.11–2.39), and no-prescription information from pharmacy (adjusted odds ratio = 2.02, 95% confidence interval = 1.09–3.72) were all associated with non-adherence. While no medication discomfort (adjusted odds ratio = 0.31, 95% confidence interval = 0.178–0.56) had a negative effect on non-adherence. Conclusion: In this study, antibiotic non-adherence was considerably high among the participants. Being male, lower educational status, poor attitude, poor knowledge, no-prescription information from pharmacy/druggist, and medication discomfort were related with antibiotic non-adherence. As a result, community service providers must provide relevant prescription information as well as appropriate counseling to antibiotic non-adherent patients.

The Ethiopian health extension program was established to enhance rural poor access and equity to health interventions, such as immunization programs. Client satisfaction with child immunization services is a clear measure of service quality and plays a vital role in improving immunization coverage and quality. Thus, the goal of this study was to analyze client satisfaction with rural health extension workers' child vaccination services and associated characteristics in Dawie Harewa District, North East Ethiopia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among mothers and caregivers of children who received immunization services from March 5–20, 2016. The data was collected from 722 mothers through a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. Epi.info version 7 was used to enter the data, and SPSS version 20.0 was used to analyze it. To identify factors that influence mothers' satisfaction with immunization services, logistic regression analyses were employed. The degree of relationship between the independent and dependent variables was determined using an odds ratio with a 95 percent confidence interval, with a P-value of 0.05 considered statistically significant. The majority of mothers (84.68%) were happy with the child immunization services provided by health extension workers (HEWs). Mothers with good knowledge (AOR=3.31; 95% CI: 1.67–6.56), a positive attitude (AOR=7.56; 95% CI: 3.12–16.90), and whose homes were visited by HEWs (AOR=2.98; 95%CI: 1.83–4.85) were more likely than their counterparts to be satisfied with child immunization services. Majority of the respondents were satisfied with the services provided by HEWs. The level of knowledge and attitude of mothers, as well as the health extension workers' habit of visiting clients at home, were found to be the most important factors in determining client satisfaction with the vaccination program. Improved client knowledge, ongoing follow-up, and increased HEW home visits are all essential elements in boosting customer satisfaction.

Coronavirus outbreak was a public health emergency. The surge of new confirmed cases and deaths was observed in developing countries due to the occurrence of new variants. However, factors associated with the duration of recovery among admitted patients remained uncertain. Therefore, we assessed factors associated with time to recovery from Covid-19 among hospitalized patients at the treatment center in South Central, Ethiopia. We employed a retrospective cross-sectional study among 422 patients hospitalized at Bokoji Hospital treatment center with Covid-19 from July 1, 2020, through October 30, 2021. Data were entered, coded, and analyzed using SPSS 26 version. We computed the survival probability using the Kaplan Meier method and determined factors associated with time to recovery using Cox regression analysis. Finally, the interpretation of adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) and P-values less than 0.05 were declared as statistically significant. Our study found that the median time to recovery from Covid-19 infection of 13 days, with an IQR of 9–17 days. In multivariate Cox regression, ≥ 60 years old (AHR = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.49, 0.895), chronic pulmonary disease (AHR = 0.67; 95% CI: 0.455, 0.978), Male (AHR = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.611, 0.979), and being on Intranasal oxygen care (AHR = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.427–0.717) were significantly associated with time to recovery. Thus, health providers in treatment centers should give strict follow-up and priority for elders, patients with underlying diseases, and under supportive treatment during case management.
