Abstract

In this research, the effect of corona discharge surface modification on surface properties and water purification efficiency of electrospun polyacrylonitrile and thermoplastic polyurethane (PAN/TPU) nanofiber membranes has been investigated. The corona-treated PAN/TPU membranes were studied using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR), water contact angle, detection and enumeration of Escherichia coli (E. coli), the most probable number (MPN) estimation of E. coli, and the desalinating performance through electrical conductivity (EC). The results showed that the sample PT4, which was subjected to 40 s of surface treatment, presented the lowest water contact angle (25.2°). The highly connected nanofibers between pores for the sample with 40 s surface treatment provided excellent membrane filterability. The formation of polar oxygen groups was confirmed on the surface of membranes contributing to its enhanced wettability. The desalination process provided good efficiency by removing about 30 wt.% of the salt present in the water samples. The MPN and lactose consumption tests indicated that the prepared membranes could remove E. Coli, however, fungi agents could pass it for both water samples of Persian Gulf and Caspian sea. The water hardness for the water samples of the Persian Gulf and Caspian sea were 6800 and 3700 ppm, respectively, indicating that both water samples are very hard. Abstract

The discharge of substantial volumes of wastewater laden with toxic contaminants from tannery factories poses severe environmental challenges. This study delves into the synthesis of a CuO–PP-MAH nanocomposite and explores its efficacy in reducing the BOD/COD levels in tannery wastewater. Addressing this issue necessitates the development of nanoparticles incorporated within polymeric nanocomposites, utilizing eco-friendly resources and minimizing the use of hazardous precursors. In this context, a novel in situmelt mixing and extrusion technique has been introduced for the synthesis of CuO–PP-MAH, wherein copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles are immobilized onto maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-MAH). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed well-dispersed copper oxide nanoparticles on the polymeric support, exhibiting diameters ranging from 20 to 60 nm due to maleic anhydride functionalization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the complexation of copper moieties with maleic anhydride grafted onto the polymeric chains. This method yielded a stable, high surface area, highly efficient, and regenerative catalytic nanocomposite. The potential of this nanocomposite as a green catalyst was assessed for COD/BOD reduction in industrial tannery wastewater, demonstrating remarkable catalytic activity in diminishing COD/BOD. Notably, the process did not involve any toxic solvents and adhered to the principles of green chemistry. Furthermore, this approach is scalable for industrial applications, indicating its practical viability.

Abstract

Background: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most common clinically significant primary immunodeficiency (PID) disorder characterized by variable clinical manifestations including recurrent infections, autoimmune disorders, enteropathy, lymphoproliferative disorders, and malignancy. The aim of this study is to estimate the overall prevalence of malignancy in patients with CVID. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were searched systemically to find eligible studies from the earliest available date to March 2019 with standard keywords. Pooled estimates of the malignancy prevalence and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using random effects models. Results: Forty-eight studies with a total of 8123 CVID patients met the inclusion criteria and were finally included in the meta-analysis. Overall prevalence of malignancy was 8.6% (95% CI: 7.1–10.0; I2 = 79.2%). The prevalence of lymphoma, gastric cancer, and breast cancer in CVID patients were 4.1% (95% CI: 3.3–4.9; I2 = 62.6%), 1.5% (95% CI: 0.78–2.2; I2 = 68.9%), and 1.3% (95% CI: 0.64–1.9; I2 = 54.9%), respectively. Moreover, autoimmunity and malabsorption were more frequent in patients with malignancy than those without malignancy. Conclusion: The prevalence of malignancy has increased in CVID patients due to recent improvement in survival rate and the lymphoma is the most common type. This research highlighted the significance of malignancy screening and management in CVID patients.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the possibility of barrier effect of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanofiber, against the UV radiation in different electrospinning situations. For this purpose, nanofibers with different weight ratio of PVA and nanoclay (MMT) were electrospun under different circumstances, and the amount of protect that is created by the nanofiber web against UV radiation by examining the rate of degradation of methylene blue dye that was protected by the same web was estimated. The UV‐vis spectrometry was used for the analysis of methylene blue color. In order to investigate the morphology and miscibility of PVA‐MMT composite nanofiber, X‐ray diffraction, scanning election microscope, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer have been used. Abstract

Atmospheric pressure plasma treatment as a dry and environment-friendly process can modify the textile surface and improve wettability, adhesion and dye uptake. In this study, the effect of corona discharge treatment was investigated on wool dyeing with weld as a natural dye. Wool fabrics were treated by corona discharge treatment in different times. Then they were dyed with weld in acidic pH. For comparing to conventional dyeing method, untreated wool fabrics were dyed with weld in presence of tannic acid as mordant. The color data (L*, a*, b*) and fastness properties were determined. Furthermore, the corona treated samples were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results show that the corona treatment was caused to improve color strength as compared to conventional method without changing the fastness properties. It means that the corona treatment can be replaced with mordant in wool dyeing. 32. Fabrication and Characterization of Chitosan-Gelatin Nanofibers.

Abstract

The article presents a study on the characterization and fabrication of chitosan-gelatin nanofibers. It discusses how the study was conducted which involved the use of glacial acetic acid, deionized water, and medium molecular weight chitosan powder. It details the electrospinning and tests wherein blends of chitosan-gelatin were dissolved in concentrated acetic acid. It concludes that integrating gelation with chitosan can help in the electrospinning of chitosan.
