ORFEUS (Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology, orfeus-eu.org) coordinates and promotes seismology in the Euro-Mediterranean region through harmonized collection, archival and distribution of seismic waveform data & metadata, based on services and products managed at national level by more than 60 participating seismological Institutions. ORFEUS is one of the founding members of EPOS Seismology (www.epos-eu.org/tcs/seismology) and its services are largely integrated in the EPOS Data Access Portal (www.ics-c.epos-eu.org). ORFEUS comprises: (i) the European Integrated waveform Data Archive (EIDA; orfeus-eu.org/data/eida); (ii) the European Strong-Motion databases (orfeus-eu.org/data/strong); and iii) the recently established group representing the community of European mobile pools, including amphibian instrumentation (orfeus-eu.org/data/mobile). Currently, ORFEUS facilitates access to the waveforms acquired by more than 18,000 stations including dense temporary experiments (e.g., AlpArray, AdriaArray), with strong emphasis on open, high-quality data. Access to data and products is ensured through state-of-the-art technologies - with strong emphasis on web services - clear policies and licenses, and acknowledging the crucial role played by data providers. Significant efforts are underway to enhance the existing services to tackle the challenges posed by the Big Data Era and the needs of computational seismology, and to actively encourage interoperability and integration of multidisciplinary datasets in geoscience workflows. ORFEUS also implements community services that include software and travel grants, webinars, workshops, editorial initiatives and discussion forums. In this study, 3-D models of P-wave velocity (Vp) and P-wave and S-wave ratio (Vp/Vs) of the crust and upper mantle in the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps (northern Italy and southern Austria) were calculated using local earthquake tomography (LET). The data set includes high-quality arrival times from well-constrained hypocenters observed by the dense, temporary seismic networks of the AlpArray AASN and SWATH-D. The resolution of the LET was checked by synthetic tests and analysis of the model resolution matrix. The small inter-station spacing (average of ∼15 km within the SWATH-D network) allowed us to image crustal structure at unprecedented resolution across a key part of the Alps. The derived P velocity model revealed a highly heterogeneous crustal structure in the target area. One of the main findings is that the lower crust is thickened, forming a bulge at 30–50 km depth just south of and beneath the Periadriatic Fault and the Tauern Window. This indicates that the lower crust decoupled both from its mantle substratum as well as from its upper crust. The Moho, taken to be the iso-velocity contour of Vp = 7.25 km/s, agrees with the Moho depth from previous studies in the European and Adriatic forelands. It is shallower on the Adriatic side than on the European side. This is interpreted to indicate that the European Plate is subducted beneath the Adriatic Plate in the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps.

ORFEUS (Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology; http://orfeus-eu.org/) is a non-profit foundation that promotes observational seismology in the Euro-Mediterranean area through the collection, archival and distribution of seismic waveform data, metadata, and closely related services and products. The data and services are collected or developed at national level by more than 60 contributing Institutions in Pan-Europe and further enhanced, integrated, standardized, homogenized and promoted through ORFEUS. Among the goals of ORFEUS are: (a) the development and coordination of waveform data products; (b) the coordination of a European data distribution system, and the support for seismic networks in archiving and exchanging digital seismic waveform data; (c) the encouragement of the adoption of best practices for seismic network operation, data quality control and FAIR data management; (d) the promotion of open access to seismic waveform data, products and services for the broader Earth science community. In this study, we analyzed a large seismological dataset from temporary and permanent networks in the southern and eastern Alps to establish high-precision hypocenters and 1-D VP and VP/VS models. The waveform data of a subset of local earthquakes with magnitudes in the range of 1–4.2 ML were recorded by the dense, temporary SWATH-D network and selected stations of the AlpArray network between September 2017 and the end of 2018. The first arrival times of P and S waves of earthquakes are determined by a semi-automatic procedure. We applied a Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion method to simultaneously calculate robust hypocenters, a 1-D velocity model, and station corrections without prior assumptions, such as initial velocity models or earthquake locations. A further advantage of this method is the derivation of the model parameter uncertainties and noise levels of the data. The precision estimates of the localization procedure is checked by inverting a synthetic travel time dataset from a complex 3-D velocity model and by using the real stations and earthquakes geometry. The location accuracy is further investigated by a quarry blast test. The average uncertainties of the locations of the earthquakes are below 500 m in their epicenter and ∼ 1.7 km in depth. The earthquake distribution reveals seismicity in the upper crust (0–20 km), which is characterized by pronounced clusters along the Alpine frontal thrust, e.g., the Friuli-Venetia (FV) region, the Giudicarie–Lessini (GL) and Schio-Vicenza domains, the Austroalpine nappes, and the Inntal area. Some seismicity also occurs along the Periadriatic Fault. The general pattern of seismicity reflects head-on convergence of the Adriatic indenter with the Alpine orogenic crust. The seismicity in the FV and GL regions is deeper than the modeled frontal thrusts, which we interpret as indication for southward propagation of the southern Alpine deformation front (blind thrusts).

CaTeNA – Climatic and Tectonic Natural Hazards in Central Asia – is an interdisciplinary, international project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research to study natural hazards in Central Asia. Central Asia is one of the most tectonically active regions of the world and is influenced by both the west wind zone and monsoon. CaTeNA is examining the two most serious natural hazards arising from these conditions: Earthquakes and mass movements. The project goal is to better understand the underlying processes and triggering factors and to better estimate the resulting risks. For this purpose, CaTeNA localises tectonic faults and determines deformation rates and their changes. Focus is put on two of the most active fault systems, the Main Pamir Thrust and the Darvaz Fault crossing Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. We try to estimate recurrence intervals of large earthquakes and to understand their relationship to mass movements using paleo-seismology, geomorphology and remote sensing. The current deformation field is characterised and quantified using the methods of space geodesy and seismology. The results will be incorporated into the openly accessible Central Asian Tectonic Database developed within the project, making it accessible to the public, stakeholders and decision-makers. They form the basis for a more accurate estimation of the risk for earthquakes and landslides. Another important project goal is the development and implementation of a dynamic risk assessment for landslides, including high-resolution, model-based precipitation and snowmelt maps. This allows for an improved estimation of the effects of geological hazards on inhabited areas and traffic infrastructure. Direct and efficient risk communication is achieved through interactive visualisation based on a dynamic multilingual web GIS platform. This is an essential step on the path to an early-warning system that takes into account the most important triggering factors. Many researchers are overwhelmed by challenges of FAIR data requirements by journal publishers, institutional guidelines or legacy data. The GeoDataNode project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF), conducted a survey of data management practices at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The aim was to assess the state of current practices and needs, and their alignment to institutional and national guidelines for data management. The target audience included scientific and technical employees at all levels. A response rate of 24% of the demographic target was achieved. The survey revealed a general need for improvement and structuring of research data handling. This includes the provision of adequate storage space, back-up schedules, and the familiarization of young researchers with good scientific practice. Using the knowledge gathered by the survey, we present the next steps for the project and the GFZ. This includes more intuitive ways for researchers to orient themselves at any stage of the data life cycle. Key element in addressing this challendes is the development of a “FAIR Data Roadmap” including an online data readiness "decision tree" as a central guidance for researchers at every stage of data management activities. Additional activities are the promotion of data publications, IGSN and other PIDs as best practice for data sharing. For example, databases listing information regarding scientific instruments used in a study (including persistent identifiers; PID’s) ensure globally unique identification of instruments and provide important metadata (e.g., calibration information).
