Background: This study investigates the potential effect of sub-chronic exposure to sodium metabisulfite (NaMBS) on the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of female Wistar rats. Methods: A total of 24 adolescent female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups (6 rats each) as follows: Group 1 (control) received 0.5 mL of normal saline; group 2 was administered by 100 mg/kg of NaMBS; group 3 was issued by 300 mg/kg of NaMBS; group 4 received 500 mg/kg of NaMBS. The route of administration was oral for 28 days. After completing the administration phase, the Y-maze test was conducted. Subsequently, the rats were euthanized, and tissue samples from the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were collected for biochemical assays, precisely measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) levels, as well as histological studies, such as hematoxylin and eosin, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Meanwhile, the neuronal count was done. Results: The learning and memory functions of rats in the treated and control groups were similar (number of alternations: P>0.05). The group treated with 500 mg/kg NaMBS presented indications of neurodegeneration in CA1 of the hippocampus and high glial fibrillary acidic protein-immunoreactivity but had no noticeable effects on layer II/III of the prefrontal cortex. Regardless of the dosage of NaMBS, malondialdehyde level was the same (P>0.05) for all groups; however, in the group that received 500 mg/kg NaMBS, the acetylcholinesterase level was significantly reduced (P˂0.05). Conclusion: This study revealed that while NaMBS can lead to neurodegeneration in the hippocampus of Wistar rats at 500 mg/kg, the prefrontal cortex remains resilient and spatial memory is unaffected, but a decrease in acetylcholinesterase activity raises cognitive concerns, emphasizing the need for cautious consideration of its use.

Plasmodium falciparum lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH), a protein receptor with Protein Data Bank (PDB) code 1CET, was used as a molecular target for docking studies with 11 sets of piperidine-based derivatives. Modelling and geometry optimisation using density functional theory (DFT) were performed on these sets of molecules to predict and calculate the molecular descriptors and properties responsible for the bioactivity of the molecules during interaction with the protein receptor. The values obtained for the descriptors were in accordance with Lipinski's rule. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies result in orbital energies (band gaps) with more stable complex formation when reacted with the protein receptor. To predict the biological activities of the formed complexes, quantitative structural activity relationship (QSAR) models were developed using linear regression methods: multiple linear regression (MLR) and robust linear regression (RLM), and nonlinear regression methods: kernel regression (KRM) and spline regression (SRM). The nonlinear models provided a better fit than the linear models did. The KRM outperformed the SRM because of its better efficiency at a lower bandwidth (h = 0.6), although both models seemed to have better fits as the number of bandwidths increased. In addition, docking and scoring results of the compounds outperformed the standard drug (chloroquine) with binding affinity ranged from -7.5 to -8.5 kcal/mol (cf -5.8 kcal/mol for chloroquine).

ObjectiveEvaluating the canal-centering and apical transportation ability of endodontic file systems working with different kinematics but of similar cross section. Materials and MethodsSixty human maxillary first molar mesiobuccal (MB) roots were assigned to three experimental groups based on instrumentation techniques: Reciproc Blue (RB), Mtwo (M2), and OneShape (OS). Pre- and post-instrumentation micro-computed tomographic analysis was performed. Centering ability and apical transportation were analyzed at 3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm short of the apex. Statistical analysis was conducted using Mann–Whitney U test and Kruskal–Wallis test. ResultsOS showed better canal-centering ability than RB and M2 at 3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm. No significant difference among the tested groups was observed during the assessment of apical transportation (P < 0.05). ConclusionThe systems evaluated safely prepared curved MB canals with minimal canal transportation. OS showed superior canal-centering ability compared to the other two groups.

In this study, a dynamic model for typhoid fever incorporating protection against infection in the presence of saturated incidence rate is proposed. The existence and uniqueness solution is proved in order to ascertain the existence of the model. Stability analysis of endemic and disease free equilibrium was carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the transmission of the disease in a given population. Sensitivity analysis was also carried out to detect the impact of the parameters of the reproductive number and which parameters should focus as a control intervention. Numerical simulation of the model was carried out and the result is presented graphically, the result shows that an increase in the probability of the sources of protection and sociology factor dictate low disease prevalence in a population.

The adoption of smart card technology in various parts of Africa has reduced electoral malpractices, resulting in election credibility and acceptability. However, its use in Nigeria’s electoral process is believed to have downsides. The paper investigates how adopting smart card technology reduced electoral malpractices during the 2019 presidential election, making it more transparent, credible, and reliable than the traditional technique. It uncovers the flaws of the technology in Nigeria, including card reader malfunction, delays in accreditation and voting, the inability of the INEC staff to operate the technology efficiently during voting, and election postponement, among others. It is therefore recommended that the INEC improve public awareness of the use of the technology and train its staff.

Surface roughness is a key parameter to consider in the machining of aluminum alloy. It is rendered as one of the important determinants of the performance of mechanical instruments or components. Owing to its excellent mechanical properties, and ease of machinability, Aluminum 6061 (Al6061) is rendered a popular choice in many industries. Achieving a desired surface finish is crucial for the performance and longevity of machined components. This study aimed to compare the predictive performance of the artificial neural network (ANN) model versus the response surface methodology (RSM) in the prediction of surface roughness in the turning process of Al6061. ANN performed better than RSM in the prediction of surface roughness (A20 index 0.93 and 0.86 for ANN and RSM models respectively). MAPE and sMAPE were also found to be lower in the ANN model compared with the RSM model (8.06 versus 9.69, and 0.039 versus 0.047 respectively) indicating that the ANN model had a better predictive performance compared with the RSM model. Both ANN and RSM models showed that cutting speed and feed rate were the most important determinants of surface roughness in the turning process of Al6061 in other words to achieve a smoother surface during the turning process of Al6061 high cutting speed and low feed rate should be used. The findings of this study reflect the potential utility of ANN in the prediction and subsequently optimizing cutting parameters to achieve a smoother surface.

Abstract Background Current malaria diagnosis methods that rely on microscopy and Histidine Rich Protein-2 (HRP2)-based rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) have drawbacks that necessitate the development of improved and complementary malaria diagnostic methods to overcome some or all these limitations. Consequently, the addition of automated detection and classification of malaria using laboratory methods can provide patients with more accurate and faster diagnosis. Therefore, this study used a machine-learning model to predict Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) antigen positivity (presence of malaria) based on sociodemographic behaviour, environment, and clinical features. Method Data from 200 Nigerian patients were used to develop predictive models using nested cross-validation and sequential backward feature selection (SBFS), with 80% of the dataset randomly selected for training and optimisation and the remaining 20% for testing the models. Outcomes were classified as Pf-positive or Pf-negative, corresponding to the presence or absence of malaria, respectively. Results Among the three machine learning models examined, the penalised logistic regression model had the best area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the training set (AUC = 84%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 75–93%) and test set (AUC = 83%; 95% CI: 63–100%). The performance of a Pelton wheel is influenced by the jet created by the nozzle. Therefore, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation was proposed. In this study, the significant output parameters (outlet velocity, outlet pressure, and tangential force component) and input parameters (different pressure and spear locations) were examined. In addition, the influencing parameters and their contributing percentages to the performance of the Pelton wheel were calculated using different optimisation techniques such as Taguchi Design of Experiments (DoE), Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) and Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC). The effect of input factors on the output response was examined with DoE, and the results show that the inlet pressure had the most significant impact (97.38%, 99.18%, and 97.38%, respectively, for all different spear sites with a 99% confidence level). In terms of preference values, the TOPSIS and GRA results are comparable (best ranks for simulation runs #24 and #25 and least ranks for simulations #2 and #3, respectively). The CRITIC results for the pressure parameter are in good agreement with the Taguchi ANOVA analysis. The last spear location (5 mm after the nozzle outlet), with an inlet pressure of 413685 Pa generated the best result when employing the TOPSIS and GRA techniques. The outlet pressure of the nozzle was found to have a significant impact on the flow pattern of the Pelton Wheel based on the analysis of the CRITIC, Taguchi, and CFD results.

Abstract Background and Aims With the global rise in type 2 diabetes, predictive modeling has become crucial for early detection, particularly in populations with low routine medical checkup profiles. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for type 2 diabetes using health check‐up data focusing on clinical details, demographic features, biochemical markers, and diabetes knowledge. Methods Data from 444 Nigerian patients were collected and analysed. We used 80% of this data set for training, and the remaining 20% for testing. Multivariable penalized logistic regression was employed to predict the disease onset, incorporating waist‐hip ratio (WHR), triglycerides (TG), catalase, and atherogenic indices of plasma (AIP). Results The predictive model demonstrated high accuracy, with an area under the curve of 99% (95% CI = 97%–100%) for the training set and 94% (95% CI = 89%–99%) for the test set. Introduction: The probability of contamination is frequently elevated in scenarios where a well and pit latrine coexist, or in situations where heavy rain causes the overflow of open excreta dumps, which in turn flush into wells and surface water. Many possible negative health effects might arise from exposure to various ecological and biological agents in the environment. Therefore, there is a need to examine the risk of disease transmission in Ife North Local Government Area (LGA) of Osun state, using epidemiological, environmental, and ecological factors. Materials and Methods: Geostatistical analysis was used to examine the epidemiological risk, based on various environmental, biological, and ecological variables. The technique employed demonstrated the complexity and multiple parameters that raise the probability of an epidemic. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to determine whether or not the data were normally distributed. Fuzzy logic, correlation, and spline surface interpolation analysis were conducted using ArcGIS 10.3 and ENVI 5.0 software. Three levels of epidemic risk were used to construct the disease surveillance and projection maps. Results: According to the final susceptibility map, 8.08 km2 of 460.12 km2 of the research area were considered to be at very low risk for an epidemic, followed by 364.98km2 of low risk and 87.06km2 of moderate risk areas, with percentages of 1.75%, 79.32%, and 18.92%, respectively. Conclusion: A very substantial correlation was observed between biological and ecological components and water-borne diseases. It is, therefore, advised that all water sources be treated before consumption, and community involvement be encouraged in environmental sanitation programs.

Banks in all climes are primarily faced with problem of credit risk whenever they mediate between the surplus and the deficit units of the economy. This study examined the impact of credit risk management on the profitability of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Specifically, this study evaluated the impact of credit risk management on return on assets, return on equity, and net operating income of deposit money banks in Nigeria. This study adopted an ex post facto research design. Nineteen listed deposit money banks as at December 31, 2018 form the population of this study out of which a sample of fifteen banks were selected based on complete availability of data from 2007-2018. Data obtained was subjected to fixed and random effects regression estimations for the various models in this study using the Hausman test. Findings revealed that: (i) loan-value ratio and loan-deposit ratio significantly impacted on return on assets of deposit money banks, while non-performing loan ratio, bank size, and log of total loans did not significantly impact on return on assets of deposit money banks in Nigeria; (ii) total loans significantly affected return on equity of deposit money banks, while loan-value ratio, loan-deposit ratio, bank size, and non-performing loans did not significantly affect return on equity of deposit money banks in Nigeria; and (iii) bank size, non-performing loan, and total loans were found to significantly affect net operating income of deposit money banks in Nigeria, while loan-value ratio, and loan-deposit ratio did not significantly exert on net operating income of deposit money banks in Nigeria. The study therefore, concluded that loan-value ratio, loan-deposit ratio, value of total loans, bank size, and non-performing loans influence banks profitability in Nigeria, and recommended that proper attention be paid to these variables in order to increase the profitability of deposit money banks in Nigeria.

A new family of distribution named Double-Exponential-X family is proposed. The proposed family is generated from the double exponential distribution. The forms of the probability densities and hazard functions of two distinct subfamilies of the proposed family are examined and reported. Generalproperties such as moment, survival, order statistics, probability weighted moments and quartile functions of the models are investigated. A sub family of the developed family of double –Exponential-X family of the distribution known as double-Exponential-Pareto distribution was used to fit a real life data on the use of antiretroviral drugs. Molecular simulation of efficacy of antiretroviral drugs is conducted to evaluate the performance of the model. The models were tested using some models diagnostic tests and it was revealed that the proposed model was better than the ones proposed before it from the same family and also, stochastic dominance method was used to affirm the best antiretroviral drugs used in the study.

This study reports on the synthesis of novel ligands Schiff bases and their complexes (L, N2) made of 2-aminopyridine and 5,5-dimethyl-cyclohexane-1,3-dione. The elemental microanalysis, melting point, and spectroscopic methods (FT.IR, 1H-NMR, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and TGA curves) were used to characterise the ligands. Certain metal salts [Co(II), Pd(II)] react with these ligands to generate a range of complexes with the general formula [(M) (L) Cl2], where M(II) = Co and Pd.FT.IR, 1HNMR, UV/Visbil spectroscopy, elemental micro analysis (C.H.N.), magnetic susceptibility, molar conductivity, and melting point were used to characterise them. The ligand L complexes are not electrolyte, as shown by the aforementioned measurements, which also suggested the following shape for the produced complexes. The biological efficacy of ligands and complexes was investigated using two kinds of bacteria and one kind of each: With the exception of the [Pd] complex, which has a square planer, all complexes containing the ligand [L] have a tetrahedral octahedral geometry around the metal ion. Measurements of fungus’ molar conductivity also had an impact on the species under investigation.

Protein content variation in milk can impact the quality and consistency of dairy products, necessitating access to in-line real time monitoring. Here, we present a chemometric approach for the qualitative and quantitative monitoring of β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin, using mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR). In this study, we employed Hotelling T2 and Q-residual for outlier detection, automated preprocessing using nippy, conducted wavenumber selection with genetic algorithms, and evaluated four chemometric models, including partial least squares, support vector regression (SVR), ridge, and logistic regression to accurately predict the concentrations of β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin in milk. For the quantitative analysis of these two whey proteins, SVR performed the best to interpret protein concentration from 197 MIR spectra originating from 42 Cornell University samples of preserved pasteurized modified milk. The R2 values obtained for β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin using leave one out cross-validation (LOOCV) are 92.8% and 92.7%, respectively, which is the highest correlation reported to date. Our approach introduced a combination of preprocessing automation, genetic algorithm-based wavenumber selection, and used Optuna to optimize the framework for tuning hyperparameters of the chemometric models, resulting in the best chemometric analysis of MIR data to quantitate β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin to date.

Sex work within the Nigerian context is generally regarded as a crime and shameful behaviour commonly perpetrated by women and/or girls who exchange sexual services with different people usually men for monetary or other benefits. This present study investigates an approach initiated by some communities in Ilorin metropolis of Kwara, Nigeria to eradicate sex work activities. The study adopted a qualitative research method. Three hundred and seven residents from 5 communities where brothel-based and street-based sex workers are predominant participated in the study. A range of sampling methods including criterion, convenience and venue-based sampling methods were used; in-depth interview was the instrument employed in data collection, and data analysis was done using thematic analysis. Results indicate that while the approach is effective in controlling sex workers’ activities, it inspires violence and normalises human rights abuses of sex workers in Ilorin metropolis. The paper suggests a need for a public campaign aimed at sensitising members of the communities about the fundamental rights of their fellow citizens which they are obliged to venerate as Nigerians.

This study examined the morphology and microstructural evolution of resin-bonded palm kernel and coconut shell grain-based abrasive grinding wheels and their physico-mechanical and tribological properties. Raw palm kernel shell (PKS) and coconut shell (CNS) samples were obtained, sorted, sun- and oven-dried, pulverised, and screened into fines of 250, 500 and 850 µm grain sizes, and blended at PKS to CNS mixing ratios of 1:0, 0:1, 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1, respectively. The blended grains, on a weight basis of the total aggregates, were bonded with 25 wt.% polyester resin and hardened and catalysed with 1.5 wt.% cobalt compound and methyl-ethyl ketone peroxide. The aggregates were moulded and compressed at a constant pressure of 18 MPa, ejected, and room-cured before being oven-cured to produce the wheels. The microstructural, water absorption, impact, flexural, hardness, and wear rate properties of the produced samples were evaluated. The properties studied were significantly influenced by grain sizes and mixing ratios of the PKS and CNS in the wheels. The least hardness value, 6.42 HRB, and wear rate, 0.44 mg/m were found in wheels produced from aggregates with pure PKS content with 850 and 250 µm grain sizes, respectively. The wheels' durability qualities suggest they could be used as abrasive grinding wheels, in particular, for wood cutting and finishing processes

In this work, a weighted H lder function that approximates a Jacobi polynomial which solves the second order singular Sturm-Liouville equation is discussed. This is generally equivalent to the Jacobean translations and the moduli of smoothness. This paper aims to focus on improving methods of approximation and finding the upper and lower estimates for the degree of approximation in weighted H lder spaces by modifying the modulus of continuity and smoothness. Moreover, some properties for the moduli of smoothness with direct and inverse results are considered.

Abstract The Abu Gabra and Bentiu formations are widely distributed within the interior Muglad Basin. Recently, much attention has been paid to study, evaluate and characterize the Abu Gabra Formation as a proven reservoir in Muglad Basin. However, few studies have been documented on the Bentiu Formation which is the main oil/gas reservoir within the basin. Therefore, 33 core samples of the Great Moga and Keyi oilfields (NE Muglad Basin) were selected to characterize the Bentiu Formation reservoir using sedimentological and petrophysical analyses. The aim of the study is to de-risk exploration activities and improve success rate. Compositional and textural analyses revealed two main facies groups: coarse to-medium grained sandstone (braided channel deposits) and fine grained sandstone (floodplain and crevasse splay channel deposits). The coarse to-medium grained sandstone has porosity and permeability values within the range of 19.6% to 32.0% and 1825.6 mD to 8358.0 mD respectively. On the other hand, the fine grained clay-rich facies displays poor reservoir quality as indicated by porosity and permeability ranging from 1.0 to 6.0% and 2.5 to 10.0 mD respectively. A number of varied processes were identified controlling the reservoir quality of the studies samples. Porosity and permeability were enhanced by the dissolution of feldspars and micas, while presence of detrital clays, kaolinite precipitation, iron oxides precipitation, siderite, quartz overgrowths and pyrite cement played negative role on the reservoir quality. Intensity of the observed quartz overgrowth increases with burial depth. At great depths, a variability in grain contact types are recorded suggesting conditions of moderate to-high compactions. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy revealed presence of micropores which have the tendency of affecting the fluid flow properties in the Bentiu Formation sandstone. These evidences indicate that the Bentiu Formation petroleum reservoir quality is primarily inhibited by grain size, total clay content, compaction and cementation. Thus, special attention should be paid to these inhibiting factors to reduce risk in petroleum exploration within the area.

People with high self-esteem are better able to take delight in life's little pleasures, handle difficult situations, overcome challenges, establish lasting relationships, and strengthen their weaknesses. This study examined socioeconomic status, body image, and peer influence on self-esteem among in-school adolescents in Ibadan, Nigeria. The descriptive survey design of the correlational type was used during the investigation. This study employed a multi-stage sampling technique. Three hundred and forty-five in-school adolescents made the study sample. Data was collected using reliable instruments: (Peer Influence Scale [alpha] = 0.78; Body image scale [alpha] = 0.83; Parental Socioeconomic Status Scale [alpha] = 0.89; Self-Esteem Inventory [alpha] = 0.71). From the results, socioeconomic status (r = 0.533; p < 0.05), body image (r = 0.577; p < 0.05), and peer influence (r = 0.331; p < 0.05) had a significant relationship with (self-esteem). Body Image made the most significant contribution ([beta] = 0.371; t = 7.555; p < 0.05) followed by Peer influence ([beta] = 0.316; t = 8.112; p < 0.05) and Socioeconomic status ([beta] = 0.312; t = 6.374; p < 0.05). The study underscores the need for counseling and orientation programs for adolescents in all ramifications; this will help ease the psychological strain that could hamper their self-esteem.

Educational outcomes in Kuwait have lagged behind those of much of the world. This problem is compounded by Kuwaiti educators' struggle to introduce core math and science concepts to young learners. Starting from the premise that STEAM-oriented education will make these concepts more accessible, this study seeks to demonstrate the potential effectiveness of teacher training programs that emphasize the use of STEAM activities. Using surveys, classroom observations, and direct interviews with recipients of STEAM-oriented training, the study concludes that such training has a significantly positive effect on teachers' skills of implementing STEAM activities as well as their attitudes toward STEAM. The results are discussed in the context of future measures that could be taken to increase exposure to STEAM concepts and strategies and to improve overall student performance in Kuwait.

A receiver station was installed at Nasiriyah (Dhi Qar University - Faculty of Sciences) to receive very low frequency (VLF) radio signals from transmitters around the world. VLF waves are excellent probes of the sudden ionospheric disturbance (SID); they detect varying properties of the D layer presented as a lower region of the ionosphere when these waves propagate through the Earth-Ionosphere Waveguide. This study describes the set-up of our station system and it demonstrates its ability to detect sudden ionospheric disturbances caused by solar flares in May, June, July, August, and September 2017. We found out that the monitoring station is working successfully to receive FLV signals, and to detect sudden ionospheric disturbances. We detected 17 events resulting from solar flare C-class, 8 events from M-class, and 3 events from X-class that caused an increase in the received FLV amplitude.

Abstract The Zarga and Ghazal formations constitute important reservoirs across the Muglad Basin, Sudan. Nevertheless, the sedimentology and diagenesis of these reservoir intervals have hitherto received insignificant research attention. Detailed understanding of sedimentary facies and diagenesis could enhance geological and geophysical data for better exploration and production and minimize risks. In this study, subsurface reservoir cores representing the Zarga formation (1114.70–1118.50 m and 1118.50–1125.30 m), and the Ghazal formation (91,403.30–1406.83 m) were subjected to sedimentological (lithofacies and grain size), petrographic/mineralogic (thin section, XRD, SEM), and petrophysical (porosity and permeability) analyses to describe their reservoir quality, provenance, and depositional environments. Eight (8) different lithofacies, texturally characterized as moderately to well-sorted, and medium to coarse-grained, sub-feldspathic to feldspathic arenite were distinguished in the cored intervals. Mono-crystalline quartz (19.3–26.2%) predominated over polycrystalline quartz (2.6–13.8%), feldspar (6.6–10.3%), and mica (1.4–7.6%) being the most prominent constituent of the reservoir rocks. Provenance plot indicated the sediments were from a transitional continental provenance setting. The overall vertical sequence, composition, and internal sedimentary structures of the lithofacies suggest a fluvial-to-deltaic depositional environment for the Ghazal formation, while the Zarga formation indicated a dominant deltaic setting. Kaolinite occurs mainly as authigenic mineral, while carbonates quantitatively fluctuate with an insignificant amount of quartz overgrowths in most of the analyzed cores. Integration of XRD, SEM, and thin section analysis highlights that kaolinite, chlorite, illite, and smectite are present as authigenic minerals. Pore-destroying diagenetic processes (e.g. precipitation, cementation, and compaction etc.) generally prevailed over pore-enhancing processes (e.g. dissolution). Point-counted datasets indicate a better reservoir quality for the Ghazal formation (ɸ = 27.7% to 30.7%; K = 9.65 mD to 1196.71 mD) than the Zarga formation (17.9% to 24.5%; K = 1051.09 mD to 1090.45 mD).

Soil samples were collected from calcareous soil fertilized with phosphate fertilizers for many years from different regions of central and southern Iraq and from two depths surface 0-30 and subsurface 30-60 cm. Forms of soluble, ready available, organic and total phosphorus were extracted. Through statistical analysis of different phosphorus forms with soil composition of the studied soils, there was a positive and significant correlation between ready phosphorus, OM and active and total calcium carbonate. The simple correlation coefficient (r = 0.495) and active calcium carbonate (r = 0.539) were weak and significant. Background: Hemoglobinopathies are common genetic disorders affecting the synthesis of one of the globin chains of hemoglobin molecule. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard procedure for treatment of patients with normal hemoglobin and symptomatic gall stones, but doubt is still to date regarding safety of this procedure in patients with hemoglobinopathy. Aims:1. To assess the safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy for hemoglobinopathic patients, 2. To describe the perioperative events that might happen before, during or after this procedure. Patients and Methods: This is a record-based comparative study conducted over a period of seven years, involved 62 hemoglobinopathic patients and 148 patients with normal hemoglobin variant. All underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy and comparison done regarding perioperative events. Results: The overall complication rate was 56.5% in hemoglobinopathic patients and 21.6% in the other group and the difference was statistically significant (P- value ˂0.001). Vaso-occlusive crisis occurred in 9 patients (14.5%), respiratory complications (atelectasis and bronchitis) in (9.7%), acute chest syndrome in (4.8%) and hemolysis in (4.8%). Conclusions: 1. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is safe in well prepared hemoglobinopathic patients but it is associated with significantly higher rate of disease related complications, namely acute chest syndrome, hemolysis and vaso-occlusive crises.2- Hemoglobinopathic patients require special pre, intra and post-operative care which should be offered by the surgeon, the physician and the anesthetist

This study investigated how beliefs in magical powers and related sacred activities, particularly those that accept human body parts for ritual sacrifices in return for fortunes, alongside poverty, unemployment, and quest for wealth as predictors responsible for the increase in money ritual–related killings in Ilorin Emirate of Kwara State, Nigeria. A total of 1736 respondents were selected using simple random sampling techniques. The instrument employed for data collection was a questionnaire. In addition, the information gathered was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The results indicated that the increase in money ritual–related killings in Ilorin Emirate is a result of the general belief that ritual sacrifices enhance fortunes, the boundless desire for material wealth among Nigerians, unemployment, and poverty in Nigeria. Therefore, this paper suggests that there should be public enlightenment in all languages spoken in Nigeria about the dangers in associating individual success with spiritual influences.

The integration of online learning tools abruptly became necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic from early 2020 onward. This study surveyed a public-school sample of teachers (N = 297) and parents (N = 403) of Kuwaiti kindergartners. The results indicated that both teachers and parents agreed that kindergarten children learned e-learning and time-management skills to some extent or a large extent. However, both groups expressed little to moderate agreement regarding the adequate implementation of online learning (such as teacher training or the translation of course content into an online format). The two groups expressed stronger agreement that children received e-homework and that parents were provided with channels for guidance and follow-up. These latter two variables and the perceived implementation of e-learning all correlated positively with perceptions of children's outcomes. Teachers were more likely to report the provision of a guide to the e-platform, the implementation of online learning, and the provision of homework than parents were, with a stronger correlation of the implementation of online learning and children's acquisition of e-learning skills among teachers than parents.

The origin recognition complex (ORC) cooperates with CDC6, MCM2-7, and CDT1 to form pre-RC complexes at origins of DNA replication. Here, using tiling-sgRNA CRISPR screens, we report that each subunit of ORC and CDC6 is essential in human cells. Using an auxin-inducible degradation system, we created stable cell lines capable of ablating ORC2 rapidly, revealing multiple cell division cycle phenotypes. The primary defects in the absence of ORC2 were cells encountering difficulty in initiating DNA replication or progressing through the cell division cycle due to reduced MCM2-7 loading onto chromatin in G1 phase. The nuclei of ORC2-deficient cells were also large, with decompacted heterochromatin. Some ORC2-deficient cells that completed DNA replication entered into, but never exited mitosis. ORC1 knockout cells also demonstrated extremely slow cell proliferation and abnormal cell and nuclear morphology. Thus, ORC proteins and CDC6 are indispensable for normal cellular proliferation and contribute to nuclear organization.
