While cloud-cloud collisions (CCCs) have been proposed as a mechanism for triggering massive star formation, it is suggested that higher collision velocities ($v_{\rm col}$) and lower GMC mass ($M_{\rm GMC}$) or/and density ($\Sigma_{\rm GMC}$) tend to suppress star formation. In this study, we choose the nearby barred galaxy NGC 3627 to examine the SFR and SFE of a colliding GMC ($m^\star_{\rm CCC}$ and $\epsilon_{\rm CCC}$) and explore the connections between $m^\star_{\rm CCC}$ and $\epsilon_{\rm CCC}$, $M_{\rm GMC}$($\Sigma_{\rm GMC}$) and $v_{\rm col}$, and galactic structures (disk, bar, and bar-end). Using ALMA CO(2--1) data (60~pc resolution), we estimated $v_{\rm col}$ within 500~pc apertures, based on line-of-sight GMC velocities, assuming random motion in a two-dimensional plane. We extracted apertures where at least 0.1 collisions occur per 1 Myr, identifying them as regions dominated by CCC-driven star formation, and then calculated $m^\star_{\rm CCC}$ and $\epsilon_{\rm CCC}$ using attenuation-corrected H$\alpha$ data from VLT MUSE. We found that both $m^\star_{\rm CCC}$ and $\epsilon_{\rm CCC}$ are lower in the bar (median values: $10^{3.84}~M_\odot$ and $0.18~\%$), and higher in the bar-end ($10^{4.89}~M_\odot$ and $1.10~\%$) compared to the disk ($10^{4.28}~M_\odot$ and $0.75~\%$). Furthermore, we found that structural differences within the parameter space of $v_{\rm col}$ and $M_{\rm GMC}$($\Sigma_{\rm GMC}$), with higher $M_{\rm GMC}$($\Sigma_{\rm GMC}$) in the bar-end and higher $v_{\rm col}$ in the bar compared to the disk, lead to higher star formation activity in the bar-end and lower activity in the bar. To reveal the origin of the mini-starbursts in the Milky Way, we carried out large-scale CO observations toward the RCW 106 giant molecular cloud (GMC) complex using the NANTEN2 4-m radio telescope operated by Nagoya University. We also analyzed the Mopra Southern Galactic plane CO survey and Herschel infrared continuum archival data. The RCW 106 GMC complex contains the radial velocity components of $-68$ km s$^{-1}$ and $-50$ km s$^{-1}$ reported by Nguyen et al. (2015). Focusing on the RCW 106 East and West region with the massive star formation having the bright infrared dust emission, we found that these regions have three different velocity components with $\sim 10$ km s$^{-1}$ differences. The two out of three velocity components show morphological correspondence with the infrared cold dust emission and connect with the bridge feature on a position-velocity diagram. Therefore, two molecular clouds (MCs) with $\sim 10$ km s$^{-1}$ differences are likely to be physically associated with massive star-forming regions in the GMC complex. Based on these observational results, we argue that mini-starbursts and massive star/cluster formation in the RCW 106 GMC complex are induced by supersonic cloud-cloud collisions in an agglomerate of molecular gas on the Scutum-Centaurus arm., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal (AJ)

We have studied the evolution of the central hundred pc region of barred galaxies by performing numerical simulations realizing multi-phase nature of gas. Our simulations have shown that a stellar bar produces an oval gas ring namely the $x$-2 ring within $1~{\rm kpc}$ as the bar grows. The ring is self-gravitationally unstable enough to trigger formations of gas clouds. Although the gas clouds initially rotate in the $x$-2 ring, cloud-cloud collisions and/or energy injections into the gas ring by Type II supernovae deviate some of the clouds from the ring orbit. After the deviation, the deviated clouds repeat collisions with the other clouds, which rotate in the $x$-2 ring, during several rotations. These processes effectively reduce the angular momentum of the deviated gas cloud. As a result, the gas cloud finally falls into the galactic center, and episodic gas supply to the galactic center takes place., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Cloud-cloud collisions (CCCs) are expected to compress gas and trigger star formation. However, it is not well understood how the collisions and the induced star formation affect galactic-scale properties. By developing an on-the-fly algorithm to identify CCCs at each timestep in a galaxy simulation and a model that relates CCC-triggered star formation to collision speeds, we perform simulations of isolated galaxies to study the evolution of galaxies and giant molecular clouds (GMCs) with prescriptions of self-consistent CCC-driven star formation and stellar feedback. We find that the simulation with the CCC-triggered star formation produces slightly higher star formation rates and a steeper Kennicutt-Schmidt relation than that with a more standard star formation recipe, although collision speeds and frequencies are insensitive to the star formation models. In the simulation with the CCC model, about 70 per cent of the stars are born via CCCs, and colliding GMCs with masses of $\approx 10^{5.5}\,M_{\odot}$ are the main drivers of CCC-driven star formation. In the simulation with the standard star formation recipe, about 50 per cent of stars are born in colliding GMCs even without the CCC-triggered star formation model. These results suggest that CCCs may be one of the most important star formation processes in galaxy evolution. Furthermore, we find that a post-processing analysis of CCCs, as used in previous studies in galaxy simulations, may lead to slightly greater collision speeds and significantly lower collision frequencies than the on-the-fly analysis., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, published in MNRAS

The dependence of star formation efficiency (SFE) on galactic structures, especially whether the SFE in the bar region is lower than those in the other regions, has recently been debated. We report the SFEs of 18 nearby gas-rich massive star-forming barred galaxies with a large apparent bar major axis ($\geqq 75^{\prime\prime}$). We statistically measure the SFE by distinguishing the center, bar-end, and bar regions for the first time. The molecular gas surface density is derived from archival CO(1-0) and/or CO(2-1) data by assuming a constant CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$), and the star formation rate surface density is derived from a linear combination of far-ultraviolet and mid-infrared intensities. The angular resolution is $15^{\prime\prime}$, which corresponds to $0.3 - 1.8~\rm kpc$. We find that the ratio of the SFE in the bar to that in the disk was systematically lower than unity (typically $0.6-0.8$), which means that the star formation in the bar is systematically suppressed. Our results are inconsistent with similar recent statistical studies that reported that SFE tends to be independent of galactic structures. This inconsistency can be attributed to the differences in the definition of the bar region, spatial resolution, $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, and sample galaxies. Furthermore, we find a negative correlation between SFE and velocity width of the CO spectrum, which is consistent with the idea that the large dynamical effects, such as strong shocks, large shear, and fast cloud-cloud collisions caused by the noncircular motion of the bar, result in a low SFE., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the effects of the magnetic fields on the formation of massive, self-gravitationally bound cores (MBCs) in high-speed cloud-cloud collisions (CCCs). Extending our previous work (Sakre et al. 2021), we perform magnetohydrodynamic simulations following the high-speed (20 - 40 km s$^{-1}$) collisions between two magnetized (4 $\mu$G initially), turbulent clouds of different sizes in the range of 7 - 20 pc. We show that a magnetic field effect hinders the core growth, particularly after a short-duration collision during which cores cannot get highly bound. In such a case, a shocked region created by the collision rapidly expands to the ambient medium owing to the enhanced magnetic pressure, resulting in the destruction of the highly unbound cores and suppression of gas accretion to massive cores. This negative effect on the MBC formation is a phenomenon not seen in the past hydrodynamic simulations of similar CCC models. Together with our previous work, we conclude that the magnetic fields provide the two competing effects on the MBC formation in CCC; while they promote the mass accumulation into cores during a collision, they operate to destroy cores or hinder the core growth after the collision. The duration of collision determines which effect prevails, providing the maximum collision speed for the MBC formation with given colliding clouds. Our results agree with the observed trend among CCC samples in the corresponding column density range; clouds with higher relative velocity require higher column density for the formation of massive stars (Enokiya et al. 2021)., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS journal

CO(2-1) emission is often used as a tracer of the giant molecular clouds (GMCs) as an alternative to CO(1-0) emission in recent years. Therefore, understanding the environmental dependence of the line ratio of CO(2-1)/CO(1-0), $R_{21}$, on GMC scale is important to accurately estimate the mass of the GMCs. We thus measured the $R_{21}$ in the strongly barred galaxy NGC1300, where star formation activity strongly depends on galactic structure, on $\sim 100$ pc scale. CO images were obtained from ALMA and Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The resultant typical $R_{21}$ in NGC1300 is $0.57 \pm 0.06$. We find environmental variations in $R_{21}$; it is the highest in the bar-end region ($0.72 \pm 0.08$), followed by arm ($0.60 \pm 0.07$) and bar regions ($0.50 \pm 0.06$). GMCs with H$\alpha$ emission show a systematically higher ratio ($0.67 \pm 0.07$) than those without H$\alpha$ ($0.47 \pm 0.05$). In the bar region, where massive star formation is suppressed, H$\alpha$ emission is not associated with most GMCs, resulting in the lowest $R_{21}$. These results raise a possibility that properties of GMCs derived from CO(2-1) observations with the assumption of a constant $R_{21}$ are different from those derived from CO(1-0) observations. Furthermore, we find the $R_{21}$ measured on kpc scale tends to be lower than that of the GMCs probably due to the presence of an extended diffuse molecular gas in NGC1300., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Cloud-cloud collision (CCC) has been suggested as a mechanism to induce massive star formation. Recent simulations suggest that a CCC speed is different among galactic-scale environments, which is responsible for observed differences in star formation activity. In particular, a high-speed CCC is proposed as a cause of star formation suppression in the bar regions in barred spiral galaxies. Focusing on the strongly barred galaxy NGC1300, we investigate the CCC speed. We find the CCC speed in the bar and bar-end tend to be higher than that in the arm. The estimated CCC speed is $\sim20~\rm km~s^{-1}$, $\sim16~\rm km~s^{-1}$, and $\sim11~\rm km~s^{-1}$ in the bar, bar-end, and arm, respectively. Although the star formation activity is different in the bar and bar-end, the CCC speed and the number density of high-speed CCC with $> 20~\rm km~s^{-1}$ are high in both regions, implying the existence of other parameters that control the star formation. The difference in molecular gas mass (average density) of the giant molecular clouds (GMCs) between the bar (lower mass and lower density) and bar-end (higher mass and higher density) may be cause for the different star formation activity. Star formation is a fundamental process for galactic evolution. One issue over the last several decades has been determining whether star formation is induced by external triggers or is self-regulated in a closed system. The role of an external trigger, which can effectively collect mass in a small volume, has attracted particular attention in connection with the formation of massive stellar clusters, which in the extreme may lead to starbursts. Recent observations have revealed massive cluster formation triggered by cloud-cloud collisions in nearby interacting galaxies, including the Magellanic system and the Antennae Galaxies as well as almost all well-known high-mass star-forming regions such as RCW 120, M20, M42, NGC 6334, etc., in the Milky Way. Theoretical efforts are laying the foundation for the mass compression that causes massive cluster/star formation. The nature of galactic spiral arms in disc galaxies remains elusive. Regardless of the spiral model, arms are expected to play a role in sculpting the star-forming interstellar medium. As such, different arm models may result in differences in the structure of the interstellar medium and molecular cloud properties. In this study we present simulations of galactic discs subject to spiral arm perturbations of different natures. We find very little difference in how the cloud population or gas kinematics vary between the different grand-design spirals, indicting that the interstellar medium on cloud scales cares little about where spiral arms come from. We do, however, see a difference in the interarm/arm mass spectra, {and minor differences in tails of the distributions of cloud properties} (as well as radial variations in the stellar/gaseous velocity dispersions). These features can be attributed to differences in the radial dependence of the pattern speeds between the different spiral models, and could act as a metric of the nature of spiral structure in observational studies., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures. In many barred galaxies, star formation efficiency (SFE) in the bar is lower than those in the arm and bar-end, and its cause has still not been clear. Focusing on the strongly barred galaxy NGC 1300, we investigate the possibility that the presence of a large amount of diffuse molecular gas, which would not contribute to the SF, makes the SFE low in appearance. We examine the relation between the SFE and the diffuse molecular gas fraction ($f_{\rm dif}$), which is derived using the $^{12}$CO($1-0$) flux obtained from the interferometer of ALMA 12-m array, which has no sensitivity on diffuse (extended; FWHM $\gtrapprox 700$ pc) molecular gases due to the lack of ACA, and the total $^{12}$CO($1-0$) flux obtained from Nobeyama 45-m single-dish telescope. We find that the SFE decreases with increasing $f_{\rm dif}$. The $f_{\rm dif}$ and ${\rm SFE}$ are $0.74 - 0.91$ and $(0.06 - 0.16) ~\rm Gyr^{-1}$ in the bar regions, and $0.28 - 0.65$ and $(0.23 - 0.96) ~\rm Gyr^{-1}$ in the arm and bar-end regions. This result supports the idea that the presence of a large amount of diffuse molecular gas makes the SFE low. The suppression of the SFE in the bar has also been seen even when we exclude the diffuse molecular gas components. This suggests that the low SFE appears to be caused not only by a large amount of diffuse molecular gases but also by other mechanisms such as fast cloud-cloud collisions., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recent galaxy observations show that star formation activity changes depending on galactic environments. In order to understand the diversity of galactic-scale star formation, it is crucial to understand the formation and evolution of giant molecular clouds in an extreme environment. We focus on observational evidence that bars in strongly barred galaxies lack massive stars even though quantities of molecular gas are sufficient to form stars. In this paper, we present a hydrodynamical simulation of a strongly barred galaxy, using a stellar potential which is taken from observational results of NGC1300, and we compare cloud properties between different galactic environments: bar, bar-end and spiral arms. We find that the mean of cloud's virial parameter is ~1 and that there is no environmental dependence, indicating that the gravitationally-bound state of a cloud is not behind the observational evidence of the lack of massive stars in strong bars. Instead, we focus on cloud-cloud collisions, which have been proposed as a triggering mechanism for massive star formation. We find that the collision speed in the bar is faster than those in the other regions. We examine the collision frequency using clouds' kinematics and conclude that the fast collisions in the bar could originate from random-like motion of clouds due to elliptical gas orbits shifted by the bar potential. These results suggest that the observed regions of lack of active star-formation in the strong bar originate from the fast cloud-cloud collisions, which are inefficient in forming massive stars, due to the galactic-scale violent gas motion., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study effect of magnetic field on massive dense core formation in colliding unequal molecular clouds by performing magnetohydrodynamic simulations with sub-parsec resolution (0.015 pc) that can resolve the molecular cores. Initial clouds with the typical gas density of the molecular clouds are immersed in various uniform magnetic fields. The turbulent magnetic fields in the clouds consistent with the observation by Crutcher et al. (2010) are generated by the internal turbulent gas motion before the collision, if the uniform magnetic field strength is 4.0 $\mu$G. The collision speed of 10 km s$^{-1}$ is adopted, which is much larger than the sound speeds and the Alfv\'{e}n speeds of the clouds. We identify gas clumps with gas densities greater than 5 $\times$ 10$^{-20}$ g cm$^{-3}$ as the dense cores and trace them throughout the simulations to investigate their mass evolution and gravitational boundness. We show that a greater number of massive, gravitationally bound cores are formed in the strong magnetic field (4.0 $\mu$G) models than the weak magnetic field (0.1 $\mu$G) models. This is partly because the strong magnetic field suppresses the spatial shifts of the shocked layer that should be caused by the nonlinear thin shell instability. The spatial shifts promote formation of low-mass dense cores in the weak magnetic field models. The strong magnetic fields also support low-mass dense cores against gravitational collapse. We show that the numbers of massive, gravitationally bound cores formed in the strong magnetic field models are much larger than the isolated, non-colliding cloud models, which are simulated for comparison. Star formation activity depends on galactic-scale environments. To understand the variations in star formation activity, comparing the properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) among environments with different star formation efficiency (SFE) is necessary. We thus focus on a strongly barred galaxy to investigate the impact of the galactic environment on the GMCs properties, because the SFE is clearly lower in bar regions than in arm regions. In this paper, we present the $^{12}$CO($1-0$) observations toward the western bar, arm and bar-end regions of the strongly barred galaxy NGC1300 with ALMA 12-m array at a high angular resolution of $\sim$40 pc. We detected GMCs associated with the dark lanes not only in the arm and bar-end regions but also in the bar region, where massive star formation is not seen. Using the CPROPS algorithm, we identified and characterized 233 GMCs across the observed regions. Based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, we find that there is virtually no significant variations in GMC properties (e.g., radius, velocity dispersion, molecular gas mass, and virial parameter) among the bar, arm and bar-end region. These results suggest that systematic differences in the physical properties of the GMCs are not the cause for SFE differences with environments, and that there should be other mechanisms which control the SFE of the GMCs such as fast cloud-cloud collisions in NGC1300., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We performed new large-scale $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $J=$1--0 observations of the W43 giant molecular cloud complex in the tangential direction of the Scutum arm ($l\sim {30^\circ}$) as a part of the FUGIN project. The low-density gas traced by $^{12}$CO is distributed over 150 pc $\times$ 100 pc ($l \times b$), and has a large velocity dispersion (20-30 km s$^{-1}$). However, the dense gas traced by C$^{18}$O is localized in the W43 Main, G30.5, and W43 South (G29.96-0.02) high-mass star-forming regions in the W43 GMC complex, which have clumpy structures. We found at least two clouds with a velocity difference of $\sim$ 10-20 km s$^{-1}$, both of which are likely to be physically associated with these high-mass star-forming regions based on the results of high $^{13}$CO $J=$ 3-2 to $J =$ 1-0 intensity ratio and morphological correspondence with the infrared dust emission. The velocity separation of these clouds in W43 Main, G30.5, and W43 South is too large for each cloud to be gravitationally bound. We also revealed that the dense gas in the W43 GMC has a high local column density, while "the current SFE" of entire the GMC is low ($\sim 4\%$) compared with the W51 and M17 GMC. As part our investigation into the Galactic rotation curve, we carried out Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations towards the star-forming region IRAS 01123+6430 using VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) to measure its annual parallax and proper motion. The annual parallax was measured to be 0.151+/-0.042 mas, which corresponds to a distance of D=6.61^{+2.55}_{-1.44} kpc, and the obtained proper motion components were ({\mu}_{\alpha}cos{\delta}, {\mu}_{\delta})=(-1.44+/-0.15, -0.27+/-0.16) mas yr^{-1} in equatorial coordinates. Assuming Galactic constants of (R_0, {\Theta}_0)=(8.05+/-0.45 kpc, 238+/-14 km s^{-1}), the Galactocentric distance and rotation velocity were measured to be (R, {\Theta})=(13.04+/-2.24 kpc, 239+/-22 km s^{-1}), which are consistent with a flat Galactic rotation curve. The newly estimated distance provides a more accurate bolometric luminosity of the central young stellar object, L_Bol=(3.11+/-2.86)\times 10^3 L_solar, which corresponds to a spectral type of B1-B2. The analysis of 12CO(J=1-0) survey data obtained with the Five College Radio Astronomical Observatory (FCRAO) 14 m telescope shows that the molecular cloud associated with IRAS 01123+6430 consists of arc-like and linear components, which well matches a structure predicted by numerical simulation of the cloud-cloud collision (CCC) phenomenon. The coexistence of arc-like and linear components implies that the relative velocity of initial two clouds was as slow as 3-5 km s^{-1}, which meets the expected criteria of massive star formation where the core mass is effectively increased in the presence of low relative velocity (~3-5 km s^{-1}), as suggested by Takahira et al.(2014)., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures

With the advent of modern observational efforts providing extensive giant molecular cloud catalogues, understanding the evolution of such clouds in a galactic context is of prime importance. While numerous previous numerical and theoretical works have focused on the cloud properties in isolated discs, few have looked into the cloud population in an interacting disc system. We present results of the first study investigating the evolution of the cloud population in galaxy experiencing an M51-like tidal fly-by using numerical simulations including star formation, interstellar medium cooling and stellar feedback. We see the cloud population shift to large unbound clouds in the wake of the companion passage, with the largest clouds appearing as fleeting short-lived agglomerations of smaller clouds within the tidal spiral arms, brought together by large scale streaming motions. These are then sheared apart as they leave the protection of the spiral arms. Clouds appear to lead diverse lives, even within similar environments, with some being born from gas shocked by filaments streaming into the spiral arms, and others from effectively isolated smaller colliding pairs. Overall this cloud population produces a shallower mass function than the disc in isolation, especially in the arms compared to the inter-arm regions. Direct comparisons to M51 observations show similarities between cloud populations, though models tailored to the mass and orbital models of M51 appear necessary to precisely reproduce the cloud population., Comment: 21 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS July 25 2018

We carried out $^{12}$CO(J = 1 -0) observations toward bar and arm regions of strongly barred galaxies, NGC 1300 and NGC 5383, with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope (beamsize of 1-2 kpc in the galaxies). The aim of the observations is to qualitatively examine a new scenario for the suppression of star formation in bars based on recent high-resolution numerical simulations: higher speed collisions between molecular clouds in the bar region compared with the arm region suppress the massive star formation. CO emissions were detected from all the regions, indicating the presence of the molecular gases in the strong bars without associating clear HII regions. We report an observational study of the giant molecular cloud (GMC) associated with the Galactic infrared ring-like structure N35 and two nearby HII regions G024.392+00.072 (HII region A) and G024.510-00.060 (HII region B), using the new CO J=1-0 data obtained as a part of the FOREST Unbiased Galactic Plane Imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope (FUGIN) project at a spatial resolution of 21". Our CO data revealed that the GMC, with a total molecular mass of 2.1x10^6Mo, has two velocity components over ~10-15km/s. The majority of molecular gas in the GMC is included in the lower-velocity component (LVC) at ~110-114km/s, while the higher-velocity components (HVCs) at ~118-126km/s consist of three smaller molecular clouds which are located near the three HII regions. The LVC and HVCs show spatially complementary distributions along the line-of-sight, despite large velocity separations of ~5-15km/s, and are connected in velocity by the CO emission with intermediate intensities. By comparing the observations with simulations, we discuss a scenario where collisions of the three HVCs with LVC at velocities of ~10-15km/s can provide an interpretation of these two observational signatures. The intermediate velocity features between the LVC and HVCs can be understood as broad bridge features, which indicate the turbulent motion of the gas at the collision interfaces, while the spatially complementary distributions represent the cavities created in the LVC by the HVCs through the collisions. Our model indicates that the three HII regions were formed after the onset of the collisions, and it is therefore suggested that the high-mass star formation in the GMC was triggered by the collisions., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We investigate star formation occurring in idealised giant molecular clouds, comparing structures that evolve in isolation versus those undergoing a collision. Two different collision speeds are investigated and the impact of photoionising radiation from the stars is determined. We find that a colliding system leads to more massive star formation both with and without the addition of feedback, raising overall star formation efficiencies (SFE) by a factor of 10 and steepening the high-mass end of the stellar mass function. This rise in SFE is due to increased turbulent compression during the cloud collision. While feedback can both promote and hinder star formation in the isolated system, it increases the SFE by approximately 1.5 times in the colliding case when the thermal speed of the resulting HII regions matches the shock propagation speed in the collision., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in PASJ

We performed sub-parsec ($\sim$ 0.014 pc) scale simulations of cloud-cloud collisions of two idealized turbulent molecular clouds (MCs) with different masses in the range of $0.76 - 2.67 \times 10^4$M$_{\odot}$ and with collision speeds of 5 $-$ 30 km/s. Those parameters are larger than Takahira, Tasker and Habe (2014) (paper I) in which the colliding system showed a partial gaseous arc morphology that supports the NANTEN observations of objects indicated to be colliding MCs by numerical simulations. Gas clumps with density greater than $10^{-20}$ g cm$^{-3}$ were identified as pre-stellar cores and tracked through the simulation to investigate the effect of mass of colliding clouds and collision speeds on the resulting core population. Our results demonstrate that smaller cloud property is more important for results of cloud cloud collisions. The mass function of formed cores can be approximated by a power law relation with index $\gamma$ = -1.6 in slower cloud cloud collisions ($v \sim 5 $ km/s), in good agreement with observation of MCs. A faster relative velocity increases the number of cores formed in the early stage of collisions and shortens gas accretion phase of cores in the shocked region, leading to suppression of core growth. The bending point appears in the high mass part of the core mass function and the bending point mass decreases with increasing of the collision velocity for the same combination of colliding clouds. The high mass part of the core mass function than the bending point mass can be approximated by a power law with $\gamma$ = -2.3 that is very similar to the power index of the massive part of the observed initial stellar mass function. Sh2-48 is a Galactic HII region located at 3.8 kpc with an O9.5-type star identified at its center. As a part of the FOREST Unbiased Galactic plane Imaging survey using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope (FUGIN) project, we obtained the CO J=1-0 dataset for a large area of Sh2-48 at a spatial resolution of 21"(~0.4 pc), which we used to find a molecular cloud with a total molecular mass of ~3.8x10^4 Mo associated with Sh2-48. The molecular cloud has a systematic velocity shift within a velocity range ~42-47 km/s . On the lower velocity side the CO emission spatially corresponds with the bright 8 {\mu}m filament at the western rim of Sh2-48, while the CO emission at higher velocities is separated at the eastern and western sides of the 8{\mu}m filament. This velocity change forms V-shaped, east-west-oriented feature on the position-velocity diagram. We found that these lower and higher-velocity components are, unlike the infrared and radio continuum data, physically associated with Sh2-48. To interpret the observed V-shaped velocity distribution, we assessed a cloud-cloud collision scenario and found from a comparison between the observations and simulations that the velocity distribution is an expected outcome of a collision between a cylindrical cloud and a spherical cloud, with the cylindrical cloud corresponding to the lower-velocity component, and the two separated components in the higher-velocity part interpretable as the collision-broken remnants of the spherical cloud. Based on the consistency of the ~1.3Myr estimated formation timescale of the HII region with that of the collision, we concluded that the high-mass star formation in Sh2-48 was triggered by the collision., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, Accepted for publications in the PASJ

We analyzed the NANTEN2 13CO (J=2-1 and 1-0) datasets in NGC 2024. We found that the cloud consists of two velocity components, whereas the cloud shows mostly single-peaked CO profiles. The two components are physically connected to the HII region as evidenced by their close correlation with the dark lanes and the emission nebulosity. The two components show complementary distribution with a displacement of 0.4 pc. Such complementary distribution is typical to colliding clouds discovered in regions of high-mass star formation. We hypothesize that cloud-cloud collision between the two components triggered the formation of the late O stars and early B stars localized within 0.3 pc of the cloud peak. The collision timescale is estimated to be ~ 10^5 yrs from a ratio of the displacement and the relative velocity 3-4 km s-1 corrected for probable projection. The high column density of the colliding cloud 1023 cm-2 is similar to those in the other massive star clusters in RCW 38, Westerlund 2, NGC 3603, and M42, which are likely formed under trigger by cloud-cloud collision. Using the NANTEN2 Observatory, we carried out a molecular line study of high-mass star forming regions with reflection nebulae, NGC 2068 and NGC 2071, in Orion in the 13CO(J=2-1) transition. The 13CO distribution shows that there are two velocity components at 9.0 and 10.5 km/s . The blue-shifted component is in the northeast associated with NGC 2071, whereas the red-shifted component is in the southwest associated with NGC 2068. The total intensity distribution of the two clouds shows a gap of ~1 pc, suggesting that they are detached at present. A detailed spatial comparison indicates that the two show complementary distributions. The blue-shifted component lies toward an intensity depression to the northwest of the red-shifted component, where we find that a displacement of 0.8 pc makes the two clouds fit well with each other. Furthermore, a new simulation of non-frontal collisions shows that observations from 60 degrees off the collisional axis agreed well with the velocity structure in this region. On the basis of these results, we hypothesize that the two components collided with each other at a projected relative velocity 3.0 km/s estimated to be 0.3 Myr for an assumed axis of the relative motion 60 degrees off the line of sight. We assume that the two most massive early B-type stars in the cloud, illuminating stars of the two reflection nebulae, were formed by collisional triggering at the interfaces between the two clouds. Given the other young high-mass star forming regions, namely, M42, M43, and NGC 2024 (Fukui et al. 2018b; Ohama et al. 2017a), it seems possible that collisional triggering has been independently working to form O-type and early B-type stars in Orion in the last Myr over a projected distance of ~80 pc., Comment: 20 peges, 7 figures

We determine the physical properties and turbulence driving mode of molecular clouds formed in numerical simulations of a Milky Way-type disc galaxy with parsec-scale resolution. The clouds form through gravitational fragmentation of the gas, leading to average values for mass, radii and velocity dispersion in good agreement with observations of Milky Way clouds. The driving parameter (b) for the turbulence within each cloud is characterised by the ratio of the density contrast (sigma_rho) to the average Mach number (Mach) within the cloud, b = sigma_rho/Mach. As shown in previous works, b ~ 1/3 indicates solenoidal (divergence-free) driving and b ~ 1 indicates compressive (curl-free) driving. We find that the average b value of all the clouds formed in the simulations has a lower limit of b > 0.2. Importantly, we find that b has a broad distribution, covering values from purely solenoidal to purely compressive driving. Tracking the evolution of individual clouds reveals that the b value for each cloud does not vary significantly over their lifetime. Finally, we perform a resolution study with minimum cell sizes of 8, 4, 2 and 1 pc and find that the average b value increases with increasing resolution. Therefore, we conclude that our measured b values are strictly lower limits and that a resolution better than 1 pc is required for convergence. The Orion Nebula Cluster toward the HII region M42 is the most outstanding young cluster at the smallest distance 410pc among the rich high-mass stellar clusters. By newly analyzing the archival molecular data of the 12CO(J=1-0) emission at 21" resolution, we identified at least three pairs of complementary distributions between two velocity components at 8km/s and 13km/s. We present a hypothesis that the two clouds collided with each other and triggered formation of the high-mass stars, mainly toward two regions including the nearly ten O stars, theta1 Ori and theta2 Ori, in M42 and the B star, NU Ori, in M43. The timescale of the collision is estimated to be ~0.1Myr by a ratio of the cloud size and velocity corrected for projection, which is consistent with the age of the youngest cluster members less than 0.1Myr. The majority of the low-mass cluster members were formed prior to the collision in the last one Myr. We discuss implications of the present hypothesis and the scenario of high-mass star formation by comparing with the other eight cases of triggered O star formation via cloud-cloud collision., Comment: 32 pages, 19 figures. We investigated the effect of photoionising feedback inside turbulent star-forming clouds, comparing the resultant star formation in both idealised profiles and more realistic cloud structures drawn from a global galaxy simulation. We performed a series of numerical simulations which compared the effect of star formation alone, photoionisation and photoionisation plus supernovae feedback. In the idealised cloud, photoionisation suppresses gas fragmentation at early times, resulting in the formation of more massive stars and an increase in the star formation efficiency. At later times, the dispersal of the dense gas causes the radiative feedback effect to switch from positive to negative as the star formation efficiency drops. In the cloud extracted from the global simulation, the initial cloud is heavily fragmented prior to the stellar feedback beginning and is largely structurally unaffected by the late injection of radiation energy. The result is a suppression of the star formation. We conclude that the efficiency of feedback is heavily dependent on the gas structure, with negative feedback dominating when the density is high., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We explore the impact of star formation and thermal stellar feedback on the giant molecular cloud (GMC) population forming in a M83-type barred spiral galaxy. We compare three high-resolution simulations (1.5 pc cell size) with different star formation/feedback models: one with no star formation, one with star formation but no feedback, and one with star formation and thermal energy injection. We analyze the resulting population of clouds, finding that we can identify the same population of massive, virialized clouds and transient, low-surface density clouds found in our previous work (that did not include star formation or feedback). Star formation and feedback can affect the mix of clouds we identify. In particular, star formation alone simply converts dense cloud gas into stars with only a small change to the cloud populations, principally resulting in a slight decrease in the transient population. Feedback, however, has a stronger impact: while it is not generally sufficient to entirely destroy the clouds, it does eject gas out of them, increasing the gas density in the inter-cloud region. This decreases the number of massive clouds, but substantially increases the transient cloud population. We also find that feedback tends to drive a net radial inflow of massive clouds, leading to an increase in the star formation rate in the bar region. We perform dry merger simulations to investigate the role of dry mergers in the size growth of early-type galaxies in high density environments. We replace the virialized dark matter haloes obtained by a large cosmological $N$-body simulation with $N$-body galaxy models consisting of two components, a stellar bulge and a dark matter halo, which have higher mass resolution than the cosmological simulation. We then re-simulate nine cluster forming regions, whose masses range from 1e+14 Msun to 5e+14 Msun. Masses and sizes of stellar bulges are also assumed to satisfy the stellar mass--size relation of high-z compact massive early-type galaxies. We find that dry major mergers considerably contribute to the mass and size growth of central massive galaxies. One or two dry major mergers double the average stellar mass and quadruple the average size between $z=2$ and $z=0$. These growths favorably agree with observations. Moreover, the density distributions of our simulated central massive galaxies grow from the inside-out, which is consistent with recent observations. The mass--size evolution is approximated as R propto M_{*}^{alpha}, with alpha ~ 2.24. Most of our simulated galaxies are efficiently grown by dry mergers, and their stellar mass--size relations match the ones observed in the local Universe. Our results show that the central galaxies in the cluster haloes are potential descendants of high-z (z ~ 2-3) compact massive early-type galaxies. We investigate the evolution of two bars formed in fully self-consistent hydrodynamic simulations of the formation of Milky Way-mass galaxies. One galaxy shows higher central mass concentration and has a longer and stronger bar than the other at $z = 0$. The stronger bar evolves by transferring its angular momentum mainly to the dark halo. Consequently the rotation speed of the bar decreases with time, while the amplitude of the bar increases with time. These features qualitatively agree with the results obtained by idealized simulations. The pattern speed of the stronger bar largely goes up and down within a half revolution in its early evolutionary stage. These oscillations occur when the bar is misaligned with the $m = 4$ mode Fourier component. These oscillations correlate with the oscillations in the triaxilality of the dark matter halo, but differently from the way identified by idealized simulations. The amplitude of the weaker bar does not increase despite the fact that its rotation slows down with time.This result contradicts what is expected from idealized simulations and is caused by the decline of the central density associated with the mass loss and feedback from the stellar populations. The amplitude of the weaker bar is further weakens by the angular momentum injection by the interactions with stellar clumps in the disk. Cloud collision have been proposed as a way to link the small-scale star formation process with the observed global relation between the surface star formation rate and gas surface density. We suggest that this model can be improved further by allowing the productivity of such collisions to depend on the relative velocity of the two clouds. Our adjustment implements a simple step function that results in the most successful collisions being at the observed velocities for triggered star formation. By applying this to a high resolution simulation of a barred galaxy, we successfully reproduce the observational result that the star formation efficiency (SFE) in the bar is lower than that in the spiral arms. This is not possible when we use an efficiency dependent on the internal turbulence properties of the clouds. Our results suggest that high velocity collisions driven by the gravitational pull of the clouds are responsible for the low bar SFE., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We performed sub-parsec (~0.06pc) scale simulations of two idealised molecular clouds with different masses undergoing a collision. Gas clumps with density greater than 1e-20 g/cm3 (0.3e4 cm-3) were identified as pre-stellar cores and tracked through the simulation. The colliding system showed a partial gas arc morphology with core formation in the oblique shock-front at the collision interface. These characteristics support NANTEN observations of objects suspected to be colliding giant molecular clouds (GMCs). We investigated the effect of turbulence and collision speed on the resulting core population and compared the cumulative mass distribution to cores in observed GMCs. Our results suggest that a faster relative velocity increases the number of cores formed but that cores grow via accretion predominately while in the shock front, leading to a slower shock being more important for core growth. The core masses obey a power law relation with index gamma = -1.6, in good agreement with observations. This suggests that core production through collisions should follow a similar mass distribution as quiescent formation, albeit at a higher mass range. If cores can be supported against collapse during their growth, the estimated ram pressure from gas infall is of the right order to counter the radiation pressure and form a star of 100Msun., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 16 pages, 14 figures

We present the results of the wide-field $^{12}$CO (1--0) observations of the nearby barred galaxy M83 carried out with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA). The interferometric data are combined with the data obtained with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope to recover the total-flux. The target fields of the observations cover the molecular bar and part of the spiral arms, with a spatial resolution of ~110 pc x 260 pc. By exploiting the resolution and sensitivity to extended CO emission, the impact of the galactic structures on the molecular gas content is investigated in terms of the gas kinematics and the star formation. By inspecting the gas kinematics, the pattern speed of the bar is estimated to be 57.4 $\pm$ 2.8 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, which places the corotation radius to be about 1.7 times the semi-major radius of the bar. Within the observed field, HII regions brighter than 10$^{37.6}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in H{\alpha} luminosity are found to be preferentially located downstream of the CO emitting regions. Azimuthal angular offsets between molecular gas and star forming (SF) calculated with the angular cross-correlation method confirm the trend. By comparing with a cloud orbit model based on the derived pattern speed, the angular offsets are found to be in accordance with a time delay of about 10 Myr. Finally, to test whether the arm/bar promote star formation efficiency (SFE $\equiv$ Star Formation Rate (SFR)/H$_2$ mass), SFR is derived with the diffuse-background-subtracted H{alpha} and 24{\mu}m images. The arm-to-interarm ratio of the SFE is found to lie in the range of 2 to 5, while it is ~1 if no background-removal is performed. The CO-SF offsets and the enhancement of the SFE in the arm/bar found in the inner region of M83 are in agreement with the predictions of the classical galactic shock model., Comment: 21 pages, 21 figures

We present the results of sulfur monoxide, SO line emission observations of G0.253+0.016 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at an angular resolution of 1.7 arcsec. The dense and massive molecular cloud of G0.253+0.016 is highly sub-structured, yet shows no obvious signs of cluster formation. We found three outstanding features of the cloud from the SO emission, namely, shell structure of radius 1.3 pc, large velocity gradients of 20 km/s/pc with the cloud, and cores with large velocity dispersions (30-40 km/s) around the shell structure. We suggest that these large-velocity dispersion cores will form high-mass stars in the future. In attempt to explore the formation scenario of the dense cloud, we compared our results with numerical simulations, thus, we propose that G0.253+0.016 may have formed due to a cloud-cloud collision process., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We investigate the impact of galactic environment on the properties of simulated giant molecular clouds formed in a M83-type barred spiral galaxy. Our simulation uses a rotating stellar potential to create the grand design features and resolves down to 1.5 pc. From the comparison of clouds found in the bar, spiral and disc regions, we find that the typical GMC is environment independent, with a mass of 5e+5 Msun and radius 11 pc. However, the fraction of clouds in the property distribution tails varies between regions, with larger, more massive clouds with a higher velocity dispersion being found in greatest proportions in the bar, spiral and then disc. The bar clouds also show a bimodality that is not reflected in the spiral and disc clouds except in the surface density, where all three regions show two distinct peaks. We identify these features as being due to the relative proportion of three cloud types, classified via the mass-radius scaling relation, which we label A, B and C. Type A clouds have the typical values listed above and form the largest fraction in each region. Type B clouds are massive giant molecular associations while Type C clouds are unbound, transient clouds that form in dense filaments and tidal tails. The fraction of each clouds type depends on the cloud-cloud interactions, which cause mergers to build up the GMA Type Bs and tidal features in which the Type C clouds are formed. The number of cloud interactions is greatest in the bar, followed by the spiral, causing a higher fraction of both cloud types compared to the disc. While the cloud types also exist in lower resolution simulations, their identification becomes more challenging as they are not well separated populations on the mass-radius relation or distribution plots. We report the discovery of a new ultra-bright submillimeter galaxy (SMG) behind the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This SMG is detected as a 43.3+-8.4 mJy point source (MM J01071-7302, hereafter MMJ0107) in the 1.1 mm continuum survey of the SMC by AzTEC on the ASTE telescope. MMJ0107 is also detected in the radio (843 MHz), Herschel/SPIRE, Spitzer MIPS 24 {\mu}m, all IRAC bands, Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, and near-infrared (J, H, KS). We find an optical (U, B, V) source, which might be the lensing object, at a distance of 1.4 arcsec from near-infrared and IRAC sources. Photometric redshift estimates for the SMG using representative spectral energy distribution templates show the redshifts of 1.4-3.9. We estimate total far-infrared luminosity of (0.3-2.2)x10^14 {\mu}^-1 L_sun and a star formation rate of 5600-39, 000 {\mu}^-1 M_sun yr^-1, where {\mu} is the gravitational magnification factor. This apparent extreme star formation activity is likely explained by a highly magnified gravitational lens system., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, published in ApJ Letters

Recent observations show evidence that high-z (z\sim 2 - 3) early-type galaxies (ETGs) are more compact than those with comparable mass at z\sim 0. Such a size evolution is most likely explained by the `Dry Merger Sceanario'. However, previous studies based on this scenario are not able to consistantly explain both the properties of the high-z compact massive ETGs and the local ETGs. We investigate the effect of multiple sequential dry minor mergers on the size evolution of the compact massive ETGs. From an analysis of the Millennium Simulation Database, we show that such minor (stellar mass ratio $M_{2}/M_{1} < 1/4$) mergers are extremely common during hierarchical structure formation. We perform N-body simulations of sequential minor mergers with parabolic and head-on orbits, including a dark matter component and a stellar component. Typical mass ratios of the minor mergers are $1/20 < M_{2}/M_{1} < 1/10$. We show that sequential minor mergers of compact satellite galaxies are the most efficient at promoting size growth and decreasing the velocity dispersion of the compact massive ETGs in our simulations. The change of stellar size and density of the merger remnants is consistent with recent observations. Furthermore, we construct the merger histories of candidates for the high-z compact massive ETGs using the Millennium Simulation Database, and estimate the size growth of the galaxies by the dry minor merger scenario. We can reproduce the mean size growth factor between $z=2$ and $z=0$, assuming the most efficient size growth obtained during sequential minor mergers in our simulations. However, we note that our numerical result is only valid for merger histories with typical mass ratios between 1/20 and 1/10 with parabolic and head-on orbits, and that our most efficient size growth efficiency is likely to an upper limit., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, accepted for MNRAS, Fig. 5 is fixed

We develop one-zone galaxy formation models in the early Universe, taking into account dust formation and evolution by supernova (SN) explosions. Especially we focus on the time evolution of dust size distribution, because ${\rm H}_{2}$ formation on the dust surface plays a critical role in the star formation process in the early Universe. In the model we assume that star formation rate (SFR) is proportional to the total amount of ${\rm H}_{2}$. We consistently treat (i) the formation and size evolution of dust, (ii) the chemical reaction networks including ${\rm H}_{2}$ formation both on the surface of dust and in gas phase, and (iii) the SFR in the model. First, we find that, because of dust destruction due to both reverse and forward shocks driven by SNe, H$_{2}$ formation is more suppressed than that without dust destruction. At the galaxy age of $sim0.8 {\rm Gyr}$, for galaxy models with virial mass $M_{\rm vir}=10^{9} M_{\odot}$ and formation redshift $z_{\rm vir}=10$, the molecular fraction is 2.5 orders of magnitude less in the model with dust destruction by both shocks than that in the model without dust destruction. Second, we show that the H$_{2}$ formation rate strongly depends on the ISM density around SN progenitors. The SFR in higher ISM density is lower, since dust destruction by reverse shocks is more effective in higher ISM density. We report on the astrometric observations of the 22 GHz H2O masers in the high mass star-forming region G5.89-0.39 with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). Newly derived distance of 1.28^{+0.09}_{-0.08} kpc is the most precise and significantly nearer than previous values. We revised physical parameters and reconsidered nature of G5.89-0.39 based on the new distance as follows. (1) The ionizing star of the ultra compact (UC) HII region is a late O-type (O8 - 8.5) zero age main sequence (ZAMS) star, consistent with previously established limits based on its infrared spectral line emission. (2) Crescent-like maser alignment at the position of the O type ZAMS star may trace accretion disk (or its remnant), which suggests that the star is still young and before complete evaporation of circumstellar materials. (3) Although the revised mass for the east-west outflow has been reduced, it still quite large (100 Msun) which indicates that a significant fraction of the mass is entrained material and that the dynamical age significantly underestimates the actual outflow age. Our newly-derived distance emphasizes that G5.89-0.39 is one of the nearest targets to investigate ongoing high-mass star formation and evolution in a compact cluster containing a young O-type star., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 11 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

We investigate the star formation and chemical evolution in the early universe by considering the merging history of the Galaxy in the {\Lambda}CDM scenario according to the extended Press-Schechter theory. We give some possible constraints from comparisons with observation of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars. We demonstrate that (1) The hierarchical structure formation can explain the characteristics of the observed metallicity distribution function (MDF) including a break around [Fe/H]~-4. (2) A high mass IMF of peak mass ~10Msun with the contribution of binaries, derived from the statistics of carbon enhanced EMP stars (Komiya et al. 2007), predicts the frequency of low-mass survivors consistent with the number of EMP stars observed for -4~<[Fe/H]~<-2.5. (3) The stars formed from primordial gas before the first supernova explosions in their host mini-halos are assigned to the HMP stars with [Fe/H]~-5. (4) There is no indication of significant changes in the IMF and the binary contribution at metallicity -4~<[Fe/H]~<-2.5, or even larger as long as the field stars of Galactic halo are concerned. We further study the effects of the surface pollution through the accretion of ISM along the chemical and dynamical evolution of the Galaxy for low-mass Pop.III and EMP survivors. Because of shallower potential of smaller halos, the accretion of ISM in the mini-halos in which these stars were born dominates the surface metal pollution. This can account for the surface iron abundances as observed for the HMP stars if the cooling and concentration of gas in their birth mini-halos is taken into account. We also study the feedback effect from the very massive Pop. III stars. The metal pre-pollution by PISNe is shown to be compatible with the observed lack of their nucleosynthetic signatures when some positive feedback on gas cooling works and changes IMF from being very massive to being high mass., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. We study the possibility that minor mergers resolve the loss cone depletion problem, which is the difficulty occured in the coalescence process of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary, by performing numerical simulations with a highly accurate $N$-body code. We show that the minor merger of a dwarf galaxy disturbs stellar orbits in the galactic central region of the host galaxy where the loss cone depletion is already caused by the SMBH binary. The disturbed stars are supplied into the loss cone. Stars of the dwarf galaxy are also supplied into the loss cone. The gravitational interactions between the SMBH binary and these stars become very effective. The gravitational interaction decreases the binding energy of the SMBH binary effectively. As a result, the shrink of the separation of the SMBH binary is accelerated. Our numerical results strongly suggest that the minor mergers are one of the important processes to reduce the coalescence time of the SMBH binary much less than the Hubble time., Comment: 6 pages, 16 figures. accepted for publication in PASJ

We investigate rapid mass supply process by nested bars in the Galaxy by numerical simulation. We simulate gas flow in the whole galaxy disk with nested bars, which are the outer bar and the inner bar, especially with highly spatial resolution in the galactic central region. We assume two cases of inner bar size which are a smaller one and a larger one than the radius of the 200 pc gas ring which is corresponds to the Central Molecular Zone. From our numerical results, in the large size bar cases, the inner bars with large elongation induce sufficient mass inflow and destroy the 200 pc gas ring. On the other hand, in the small size bar cases, the inner bars with large elongation induce large mass inflow and do not destroy the 200 pc gas ring. This mass inflow is caused by straight shocks excited by the inner bar. In this case, nuclear gas disks of ~ 15 pc radius are formed. The nuclear gas disks are self-gravitationally unstable and we expect formation of compact star clusters under strong tidal force in the nuclear gas disks. We investigate the evolution of dust formed in Population III supernovae (SNe) by considering its transport and processing by sputtering within the SN remnants (SNRs). We find that the fates of dust grains within SNRs heavily depend on their initial radii $a_{\rm ini}$. For Type II SNRs expanding into the ambient medium with density of $n_{\rm H,0} = 1$ cm$^{-3}$, grains of $a_{\rm ini} < 0.05$ $\mu$m are detained in the shocked hot gas and are completely destroyed, while grains of $a_{\rm ini} > 0.2$ $\mu$m are injected into the surrounding medium without being destroyed significantly. Grains with $a_{\rm ini}$ = 0.05-0.2 $\mu$m are finally trapped in the dense shell behind the forward shock. We show that the grains piled up in the dense shell enrich the gas up to 10$^{-6}-10^{-4}$ $Z_\odot$, high enough to form low-mass stars with 0.1-1 $M_\odot$. In addition, [Fe/H] in the dense shell ranges from -6 to -4.5, which is in good agreement with the ultra-metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] < -4. We suggest that newly formed dust in a Population III SN can have great impacts on the stellar mass and elemental composition of Population II.5 stars formed in the shell of the SNR., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures and 1 table. We discuss the star formation history of the Galaxy, based on the observations of extremely metal-poor stars (EMP) in the Galactic halo, to gain an insight into the evolution and structure formation in the early universe. The initialmass function (IMF) of EMP stars is derived from the observed fraction of carbon-enhanced EXP (CEMP) stars among the EMP survivors, which are thought to originate from the evolution in the close binary systems with mass transfer. Relying upon the theory of the evolution of EMP stars and of their binary evolution, we find that stars of metallicity [Fe/H]<-2.5 were formed at typical mass of ~10M_sun. The top heavy IMF thus obtained is applied to study the early chemical evolution of the Galaxy. We construct the merging history of our Galaxy semi-analytically and derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of low-mass EMP stars that survive to date with taking into account the contribution of binary systems. It is shown that the resultant MDF can well reproduce the observed distribution of EMP survivors, and, in particular, that they almost all stem from a less-mass companion in binary systems. We investigate the evolution of dust that formed at Population III supernova (SN) explosions and its processing through the collisions with the reverse shocks resulting from the interaction of the SN ejecta with the ambient medium. In particular, we investigate the transport of the shocked dust within the SN remnant (SNR), and its effect on the chemical composition, the size distribution, and the total mass of dust surviving in SNR. We find that the evolution of the reverse shock, and hence its effect on the processing of the dust depends on the thickness of the envelope retained by the progenitor star. Furthermore, the transport and survival of the dust grains depend on their initial radius, a_{ini}, and composition: For Type II SNRs expanding into the interstellar medium (ISM) with a density of n_{H,0}=1 cm^{-3}, small grains with a_{ini} < ~ 0.05 micron are completely destroyed by sputtering in the postshock flow, while grains with a_{ini}= 0.05--0.2 micron are trapped into the dense shell behind the forward shock. Very large grains of a_{ini} > ~ 0.2 micron are ejected into the ISM without decreasing their sizes significantly. We find that the total mass fraction of dust that is destroyed by the reverse shock ranges from 0.2 to 1.0, depending on the energy of the explosion and the density of the ambient ISM. The results of our calculations have significant impact on the abundance pattern of subsequent generation of stars that form in the dense shell of primordial SNRs., Comment: 35 pages including 10 figures and 5 tables. We performed phase-reference very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations on five radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) at 8.4 GHz with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). Each of the five targets (RXS J08066+7248, RXS J16290+4007, RXS J16333+4718, RXS J16446+2619, and B3 1702+457) in milli-Jansky levels were detected and unresolved in milli-arcsecond resolutions, i.e., with brightness temperatures higher than 10^7 K. The nonthermal processes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, rather than starbursts, are predominantly responsible for the radio emissions from these NLS1s. Out of the nine known radio-loud NLS1s, including the ones chosen for this study, we found that the four most radio-loud objects exclusively have inverted spectra. This suggests a possibility that these NLS1s are radio-loud due to Doppler beaming, which can apparently enhance both the radio power and the spectral frequency., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present the basic features and the activities of Japanese VLBI network (JVN), a newly-established VLBI network with baselines ranging from 50 to 2560 km spreading across the Japanese islands, and capable of observing at 6.7, 8.4, and 22 GHz. We show a number of results of JVN observations: 8.4-GHz continuum images of a Giga-hertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) source and radio-loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), the spatial and velocity structures of water masers in NML Cygni as well as methanol masers in Cep A, and demonstrative observations with the bigradient phase referencing., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the 8th EVN symposium held in Torun, Poland, September 2006

We compare the highly clustered populations of very high redshift galaxies with proto-clusters identified numerically in a standard $\Lambda$CDM universe ($\Omega_0=0.3, \lambda_0=0.7$) simulation. We evolve 256^3 dark matter particles in a comoving box of side 150h^{-1}Mpc. By the present day there are 63 cluster sized objects of mass in excess of 10^{14}h^{-1}Mo in this box. We trace these clusters back to higher redshift finding that their progenitors at z=4--5 are extended regions of typically 20--40 Mpc (comoving) in size, with dark halos of mass in excess of 10^{12}h^{-1}Mo and are overdense by typically 1.3--13 times the cosmological mean density. Comparison with the observation of Lyman alpha emitting (LAEs) galaxies at z=4.86 and at z=4.1 indicates that the observed excess clustering is consistent with that expected for a proto-cluster region if LAEs typically correspond to massive dark halos of more than 10^{12}h^{-1}Mo. We study influence of a galactic central supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary on gas dynamics and star formation activity in a nuclear gas disk by making three-dimensional Tree+SPH simulations. Due to orbital motions of SMBHs, there are various resonances between gas motion and the SMBH binary motion. We have shown that these resonances create some characteristic structures of gas in the nuclear gas disk, for examples, gas elongated or filament structures, formation of gaseous spiral arms, and small gas disks around SMBHs. In these gaseous dense regions, active star formations are induced.
