This study investigates whether peer influence on smoking among adolescents is asymmetrical. We hypothesize that several features of smoking lead peers to have a stronger effect on smoking initiation than cessation. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health we estimate a dynamic network model that includes separate effects for increases versus decreases in smoking, while also controlling for endogenous network change. We find that the impact of peer influence is stronger for the initiation of smoking than smoking cessation. Adolescents rarely initiate smoking without peer influence but will cease smoking while their friends continue smoking. We discuss the implications of these results for theories of peer influence and health policy.

The aim of this study was to provide a follow‐up to the 2015 national survey of women in dental education to re‐examine factors and perceived barriers to pursuing administrative and leadership roles. At the beginning of 2023, a survey was administered to full‐time women faculty in predoctoral dental programs in the United States. The survey instrument employed a structured format along with open‐ended questions to capture qualitative data. The overall response rate was 26% (527/1994) and included respondents from fifty‐five of the sixty‐seven dental schools contacted. Half of respondents indicated holding an administrative position and 20% reported administration as their primary appointment. There was a significant increase in the number of women holding a leadership role in 2023 (76%) compared to 2015 (53%). Those seeking a leadership position in 2023 were less likely to have participated in leadership training (p<0.01) and less likely to have previously sought an administrative position (p>0.01). Women in leadership and administrative roles were more likely to indicate receiving extra compensation for administrative duties (p<0.01) and a desire for higher rank (p = 0.04) compared to 2015, but perceptions persist among the majority of respondents (71%) that women are not being compensated equally to their male counterparts. Respondents highlighted the negative impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on career advancement and the positive culture changes that have contributed to greater workplace flexibility. Overall, respondents sent a resounding message that women in dental education need structural change to achieve success: pay equity, mentorship, and inclusive and supportive work environments. Introduction: There are two variants regarding the low location of the patella in relation to the tibio-femoral joint line: patella baja (PB) and pseudo-patella baja (PPB). The purpose of this study is to investigate the incidence of PB and PPB in a cohort of patients that underwent revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) for aseptic reasons and describe any differences in each group's ROM. Methods: This retrospective study included 114 patients that underwent aseptic revision TKA surgery between 2017 and 2022. Patients were revised either for stiffness (Group 1) or aseptic loosening/instability (Group 2). The Insall-Salvati ratio (ISR) and Blackburne-Peel ratio (BPR) were used to evaluate the patellar position. ISR < 0.8 defined PB, while cases with ISR ≥ 0.8 and BPI < 0.54 were defined as PPB. ROM was measured and a subanalysis was conducted to investigate the progression of the values of ISR and BPR. Results: 55 patients comprised Group 1, and 59 patients comprised Group 2. Overall, 13 cases (11.4%) had PB before rTKA and 24 (21%) had PB after rTKA. Cases with PPB were 13 (11.4%) before and 34 (29.9%) after rTKA. Group 1 patients presented with more PB before and after rTKA (12.8% vs 10.2% and 27.3% vs 15.2% respectively). However, after rTKA Group 1 patients presented with less PPB (20%) compared to Group 2 (39%) (p = 0.02). In Group 1, patients with PPB after rTKA had less ROM compared to those without PPB [83.2 (± 21.9) vs 102.1 (± 19.9) (p = 0.025)]. The subanalysis (69 patients) showed a statistically significant decrease in ISR before and after rTKA (p = 0.041), and from the native knee to post-rTKA (p = 0.001). There was a statistically significant decrease in BPR before and after rTKA (p = 0.001) and from the native knee to both pre- and post-rTKA (p < 001). Conclusion: After undergoing rTKA, the incidences of both patella baja (PB) and pseudo-patella baja (PPB) increased. Stiffness in the knee was associated with a higher incidence of PB, while non-stiffness cases showed a significantly higher incidence of PPB. Patients with stiff knees and PPB after rTKA experienced a significant reduction in range of motion (ROM). Additionally, the study revealed a noteworthy decrease in ISR and BPR with each subsequent surgery. This information is crucial for healthcare providers, as it sheds light on potential risks and outcomes of rTKA, allowing for improved patient management and surgical decision-making. Adolescent smoking and friendship networks are related in many ways that can amplify smoking prevalence. Understanding and developing interventions within such a complex system requires new analytic approaches. We draw on recent advances in dynamic network modeling to develop a technique that explores the implications of various intervention strategies targeted toward micro-level processes. Our approach begins by estimating a stochastic actor-based model using data from one school in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. The model provides estimates of several factors predicting friendship ties and smoking behavior. We then use estimated model parameters to simulate the coevolution of friendship and smoking behavior under potential intervention scenarios. Namely, we manipulate the strength of peer influence on smoking and the popularity of smokers relative to nonsmokers. We measure how these manipulations affect smoking prevalence, smoking initiation, and smoking cessation. Results indicate that both peer influence and smoking-based popularity affect smoking behavior and that their joint effects are nonlinear. This study demonstrates how a simulation-based approach can be used to explore alternative scenarios that may be achievable through intervention efforts and offers new hypotheses about the association between friendship and smoking.
