Abstract

The Flözerbändli – a Late Palaeolithic / Early Mesolithic site in the Muota Valley (Canton Schwyz / CH) In the summers of 2020 and 2021, a team of archaeologists and palaeoecologists examined the »Flözerbändli« site, a rocky overhang located directly above the right bank of the River Muota at an elevation of 740 m a. s. l. Abstract

The Berglibalm rock shelter is located in the municipality of Muotathal in the Bisistal valley at an altitude of 1140 m a. s. l. The areas excavated in 2015 and 2019 measured 5 m2 and yielded the remains of an Early Mesolithic layer dating from around 8766 to 7596 BC. The charcoal concentrations recorded showed that hazel and maple were the main species used for firewood. The excavation also unearthed many well-preserved faunal remains, a small quantity of plant macrofossils and a lithic assemblage comprising 535 artefacts including 15 microliths. The raw material analysis revealed that the hunter-gatherers preferred local and regional raw materials including fine-grained quartzite (»Ölquarzit«). Some long-distance imports attested to contacts to the Chur and Vorarlberg regions in the east, the Ticino in the south and the Upper Rhine Valley or southern Black Forest region in the north. Abstract

Archaeological research in high mountain regions has gotten a lot more attention since the discovery of the copper age mummy called “Ötzi” in the Ötztaler Alps in 1991. In the Tyrolean Stubai Alps, the Mesolithic site Ullafelsen at 1869 m a.s.l. (above sea level) close to the recent upper timberline in the Fotsch Valley represents, on the one hand, a very important archaeological reference site and offers, on the other hand, intriguing research questions related to, amongst others, pedogenesis. Given that no biomarkers and stable isotopes have been hitherto investigated, we aimed at contributing with respective analyses and additional radiocarbon dating to a better understanding of the landscape evolution and pedogenesis on and around the Ullafelsen. Our results for modern vegetation suggest that leaf-wax-derived n-alkanes allow us to chemotaxonomically distinguish between subalpine deciduous trees (nC27 predominance) versus (sub)alpine grasses, herbs and dwarf shrubs (nC29, nC31 and/or nC33 predominance). Except for Juniperus, conifers produce no or extremely low n-alkane contents. Although no clear vegetation changes could be inferred from the n-alkane patterns of the investigated soil profiles, the total n-alkane content (TAC) was developed for the first time as an unambiguous proxy for distinguishing between buried (= fossil) topsoils (2Ahb horizons) and humus-enriched subsoils such as Bh horizons of podzols. Based on this leaf wax proxy, we can rule out that the 2Ahb?/Bh? horizons under question on the Ullafelsen are buried topsoils as suggested previously. Dating of the H2O2-pretreated soil samples yielded 14C ages for the podzol Bh horizons ranging from 6.7 to 5.4 cal kyr BP. This is clearly younger than the overlying Mesolithic living floor (LL) (10.9 to 9.5 cal kyr BP) but pre-dates the assumed intensification of alpine pasturing from the Bronze Age onwards. Both the LL and the directly overlying OAh3 horizon yielded black carbon maxima and benzene polycarboxylic acid patterns reflecting fire-induced human impact during the Mesolithic. The discrepancy between the Mesolithic charcoal 14C ages (ages of ≥ 9.5 cal kyr BP) versus the 14C ages obtained for bulk n-alkanes ranging from 8.2 to 4.9 cal kyr BP suggests that non-alkane-producing conifers predominated the vegetation on and around the Ullafelsen after the Mesolithic occupation. Only with the anthropo-zoological lowering of the timberline associated with alpine pasturing since the Neolithic and especially the Bronze Age has an n-alkane-producing vegetation cover (grasses, herbs or dwarf shrubs) started to predominate.

Abstract

The Ullafelsen at 1869 m a.s.l. in the Tyrolean Stubai Alps next to Innsbruck is an important (geo-)archaeological reference site for the Mesolithic period. Buried fireplaces on the Ullafelsen plateau were dated at 10.9-9.5 cal. kyrs BP and demonstrate together with thousands of flint stone artifacts the presence of hunter-gatherers during the Early Holocene. Most recently, we demonstrated the great potential of n-alkane and black carbon biomarkers for contributing to a better understanding of pedogenesis and landscape evolution. In order to study the importance of human and/or animals for occupation of this relevant geoarchaeological site, we carried out steroid and bile acid analyses on two modern faeces samples from cattle and sheep and on 37 soil samples from seven soil profiles at the Ullafelsen. The modern animal faeces show a dominance of 5β-stigmastanol and deoxycholic acid for ruminants (cattle and sheep), which is in agreement with literature data. The OAh horizons, which have accumulated and developed since the Mesolithic, revealed high contents of steroids and bile acids; the E (LL) horizon coinciding with the Mesolithic living floor is characterized by medium contents of steroids and bile acids. By contrast, the subsoil horizons Bh, Bs and BvCv contain low contents of faecal biomarkers indicating that leaching of steroids and bile acids into the podsolic subsoils is not an important factor. Deoxycholic acid is the most abundant bile acid in all soil samples and gives evidence for strong faeces input of ruminants. The steroid and bile acid patterns and ratios indicate a negligible input of human faeces on the Ullafelsen. β-Sitosterol as plant-derived steroid has also a strong influence on the faecal biomarker pattern in our soils. Root input into the subsoils is likely reflected by β-sitosterol contents. In conclusion, our results reflect a strong faecal input by livestock, rather than by humans as found for other Anthrosols such as Amazonian Dark Earths. Abstract

International audience; Macrofossil studies consist in the identification of preserved seeds, bud- or catkin-scales, leaves, stems, roots as well as macro-charcoals, insect cases or elytra, fungi sclerotia and inerogenic particles, but the use of such analyses is still not a standard. Yet, macrofossil analyses provide significant environmental information thanks to (1) a high level of taxonomic identification and (2) to a local origin of remains due to limited dispersal from the source. In combination with other proxies such as pollen, macrofossil analyses allow a detailed reconstitution of palaeoenvironmental conditions at local and regional scale. Most of all, groups of such remains do highly add to our understanding of ecological, hydrological and morphogenesis evolutions.Thanks to an integrated study (macrofossils, palynology and sedimentology) linked with local to regional archaeological surveys, Holocene peat sequences from the Béage volcanic plateau (S-E Massif Central, France) has shed light on three major phases of human impact. First, limited agro-pastoral impact of Neolithic groups was revealed, with cyclic clearings affecting the oak (Quercus) forests, and inflows of terrestrial fungi due to watershed erosion. Then, a continuous human presence is demonstrated from the mid-La Tène period to the early Middle Ages, including clearings of beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests and growing of local cereals. And finally, an increasing anthropogenic impact occurred after AD 1,000, leading tomassive erosion due to food-producing agriculture for a growing population together with an extensive livestock system. Overlapping data since the mid-La Tène period indicate that human presence and climatic deteriorations are not mutually exclusive, and may have been sometimes synchronous. Thus, humans may have inhabited mid-mountain areas even during periods of climate change.

Abstract

The question of the origin of Alpine farming and pastoral activities associated with seasonal vertical transhumance and dairy production in the Silvretta Alps (Eastern Switzerland) has recently benefitted from renewed interest. There, pastoral practises began during the Late Neolithic (2300 BC), but alpine dairy farming was directly evidenced so far only since the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age (1300–500 BC). The vegetation development, timberline shifts at 2280 m a.s.l. and environmental conditions of the subalpine Urschai Valley (Canton of Grisons, Switzerland) were reconstructed for the small (8 m2) Plan da Mattun fen based on palynological and geochemical analyses for the last six millennia. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses are among the first ones performed on a European peatland in such altitudes. A high Rb/Sr ratio in the fen peat sediments revealed an increase in catchment erosion during the time when the forests of the Upper Urschai Valley were steadily diminished probably by fire and livestock impact (2300–1700 BC). These landscape openings were paralleled by increasing micro-charcoal influx values, suggesting that prehistoric people actively set fire on purpose. Simultaneously, palynological evidence for pastoralism was revealed, such as pollen from typical herbs indicating livestock trampling, and abundant spores from coprophilous fungi. Since then, vertical transhumance and pastoral activities remained responsible for the open subalpine landscape above 2000 m a.s.l., most probably also in the context of milk and dairy production since 1300 BC, which is characteristic for the European Alps until today. Abstract

International audience; The renewed interest in the volcanic uplands of the Eastern Velay region (Massif Central, France) has led to the discovery of a new sedimentary sequence from the La Narce du Béage peatland, in Ardèche. Several cores were carried out to produce a high resolution interdisciplinary study. This paper deals with the sedimentological data (lithology, organic matter content, grain size, magnetic susceptibility) obtained on core D (357 cm long), extracted near the outlet of the peatland. A set of ten AMS radiocarbon dates supports these results. This study is a first step in order to reconstruct the evolution of the local environmental changes since the Upper Pleniglacial / Late Glacial transition. The sedimentary record shows a gradual silting of a Late Glacial lake (starting after 18,000 yr. cal. BP) and a gradual increase of organic matter content after 14,600 yr. cal BP. The peat initiation took place during the Early Holocene, after 10,800 yr. cal. BP. The study highlights major Late Glacial and Early Holocene bioclimatic changes at local and regional scales. These changes are characterized by high variations of the accumulation rate of anorganic sediments (TANO): during the Oldest Dryas, after the Bølling/Allerød transition and during the Younger Dryas. During the Preboreal and the Boreal, four main episodes of minerogenic accumulation are dated to (1) 11,200 - 10,800 cal. yr. BP, (2) 10,400 - 10,300 cal. yr. BP, (3) 9,900 - 9,150 cal. yr. BP and (4) 9,000 - 8,200 cal. yr. BP. The major TANO peak of the last episode (4), younger than 8,650 - 8,400 cal. yr. BP, could match with the 8,200 cal. yr BP climatic event. Since the mid-Holocene, at the end of the Early Atlantic period (i.e. during the Neolithic Period), a slower peat and sediment accumulation occurred. Therefore, only local changes in the environment are evidenced in connection with changes in the vegetation cover, eventually from climatic and/or anthropogenic origin. Finally, increasing anthropogenic pressure during the last centuries (xixth and xxth centuries) disrupted the sedimentation processes, therefore not allowing a clear understanding of environmental changes during the Late Holocene.; L’intérêt renouvelé porté aux hauts plateaux volcaniques du Velay oriental (Massif central, France) a permis de mettre en évidence une nouvelle séquence sédimentaire issue de la tourbière de La Narce du Béage, en Ardèche. Plusieurs carottages ont été menés afin de réaliser une étude pluridisciplinaire à haute résolution. Cet article présente les données sédimentologiques (lithologie, estimation du taux de matière organique, granulométrie, susceptibilité magnétique) obtenues sur la séquence D (357 cm de profondeur), extraite près de l’exutoire de la zone humide. Ces résultats s’appuient sur une série de dix datations radiocarbone AMS. Cette étude constitue une première étape du travail de reconstitution de l’évolution de l’environnement local depuis la charnière Pléniglaciaire supérieur / Tardiglaciaire. L’enregistrement sédimentaire montre un atterrissement progressif de l’étendue lacustre datant du Tardiglaciaire (après 18 000 ans cal. BP) et l’augmentation graduelle de la teneur en matière organique dès 14 700 ans cal. BP. Le développement d’une tourbière a lieu au cours de l’Holocène ancien, à partir de 10 800 ans cal. BP. Les analyses mettent en évidence les changements bioclimatiques majeurs du Tardiglaciaire et de l’Holocène ancien aux échelles locale et régionale. Ces évènements sont marqués par un rythme élevé du taux d’accumulation des sédiments non-organiques (TANO) : au cours du Dryas ancien, à partir de la transition Bølling/Allerød et du Dryas récent. Au cours du Préboréal et du Boréal, quatre principaux épisodes d’accumulation minérale sont situés entre (1) 11 200 - 10 800 ans cal. BP, (2) 10 400 - 10 300 ans cal. BP, (3) 9 900 - 9 150 ans cal. BP et (4) 9 000 - 8 200 ans cal. BP. Le pic majeur de TANO du dernier épisode (4), daté postérieurement à 8 650 - 8 400 ans cal. BP, pourrait correspondre à l’évènement climatique de 8 200 ans cal. BP. A partir de l’Holocène moyen, à la fin de l’Atlantique ancien (au cours du Néolithique), se produit un ralentissement de la turfigenèse et de l’accumulation des sédiments. Dès lors, seules des évolutions locales de l’environnement, en relation avec l’évolution du couvert végétal d’origine climatique et/ou anthropique, sont retranscrites. Enfin, les perturbations liées à l’accroissement récent de la pression anthropique sur la zone humide (xixe et xxe siècles) ne permettent plus de saisir distinctement les changements environnementaux au cours de l’Holocène récent.

Abstract

International audience; In the Eastern Massif Central, new research programs are dealing with the landscape evolution since the Late Glacial and during the Holocene (AGES and WRACC projects). In this context, a reconstruction of climatically and anthropogenically driven palaeoenvironments is in progress for the last 7,000 years. This palaeoenvironmental study of peatlands and archaeological remains focuses on an area still poorly documented: the Mezenc massif and the Ardèche mountain range, and particularly on the Béage volcanic plateau (Eastern Velay, Massif Central).The plant macrofossil analyses of a 5.5 meters long core, from the La Narce peatland on the Béage plateau (1,235 meters a.s.l.), revealed an excellent preservation of organic matter so to allow high-resolution reconstruction of environmental change. The La Narce peatland is located in a little catchment area (0.13 squared kilometres), at the interface between basaltic lava flows and the Velay granitic substratum. The sedimentary sequence is composed by a succession of sandy lacustrine clays (from basal levels to 4.4 m), organic lacustrine deposits such as gyttja (from 4.4 to 2.5 m) and peat (from 2.5 m to the current surface).
