POLITICAL development ,ECONOMIC policy ,BUDGET - Abstract
This article presents information regarding political and economic developments in the U.S. as well as in the world. U.S. citizens have elected leaders who believe they are too dumb to see the truth or too mean to hear it. Newt Gingrich seeks credit for a "historic achievement," a commitment to a "seven-year balanced budget, with honest numbers." In Moscow it is perceptibly the end of the reign, with courtiers plotting and quarreling at the bed of the ailing czar. After his heart troubles twice in quick succession, the question is no longer only whether Boris Yeltsin will be able to soldier on and fight for another presidential mandate. more...

- Abstract
"Transnational markets hold sway over all aspects of contemporary culture, and that has transformed the environment of recent art, blurring the previously discrete realms of price and value, capital and creativity. Artists have responded not only critically but imaginatively to the many issues this raises, including the treatment of artworks as analogous to capital goods, the assertion that art’s value is best measured by the market, and the notion that art and money share an internal logic. Some artists have investigated the market’s pressures on creative democracy, its ubiquity, vulgarity, and fetishizing force, while others have embraced the creative possibilities the market offers. And for a decade curators and theorists have speculated on the implications of this new symbiosis between art and money, cultural and economic value. Drawing on a wide range of interdisciplinary sources, in dialogue with artists’ writings, this anthology traces the historic origins of these debates in different versions of modernism and surveys the relationships among art, value, and price; the evolution and influence of patronage; the actors and institutions of the art market; and the diversity of artistic practices that either criticize or embrace the conditions of the contemporary market" -- Publisher's web site. more...

- Abstract
''Gathering together eight seminal essayes, by Bruce Alistaire Barber, Thomas Crow, Hal Foster , Reesa Greenberg, Serge Guilbaut, Hans Haacke, Jean-François Lyotard, and René Payant, this first volume of Parachute : The Anthology (1975 - 2000) addresses the state and function of art history, criticism, and theory in their own particular moment. An introduction by Alexander Alberro and Nora M. Alter considers the history of this unconventional and theoretically cutting-edge magazine - bridging theory between Europe and the America at a time when these were still very distinct worlds - and how this anthology constitutes and invaluable document of the changes in both art practice and writing from 1975 to 2000.''-- p. - Abstract
The selections in this anthology of critical writings on conceptual art are arranged chronologically according to their year of publication, from 1966 to 1977. These are followed by two sections that look retrospectively at the movement: one entitled “Memoirs of Conceptual Art” features artists’ reflections, and the other offers “Critical Histories of Conceptual Art.” The editors’ introductions contextualise the writings, many of which have been translated into English for the first time or have otherwise had limited availability.
