In recent decades, there have been initiatives to incorporate carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) into cement composites, particularly graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes, graphite (GP), and mild carbon (MC). Nevertheless, little is known about how these CNMs interact with the cement matrix itself. In this research, the impact of CNM incorporation at high temperatures (250, 500, 750, and 1,000°C) on cement’s mechanical characteristics and microstructure was investigated. Nine mixes were created with the CNM content (0.1 and 0.3%) being taken into consideration. The microstructure of the CNM composites was further investigated using X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetry, derivative thermogravimetry, digital microscopy, and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Based on research observations, the study demonstrated that the mechanical properties of most specimens could be enhanced through the introduction of CNMs. The recommended proportions of GP-0.1, GO-0.1, and MC-0.1, in accordance with the weight of the binder, and the impact of the CNMs on the elastic modulus were also assessed. As a consequence, the CNM’s porous structure and apparent crack pattern were identified using microstructure analysis.

The focus of this research was to investigate the effects of graphene oxide (GO) on the microscopic composition, structure, pore size, and mechanical properties of GO-reinforced cement composites. Furthermore, the research explored the thermal behavior of GO-reinforced cement mortar at different elevated temperatures (250, 500, 750, and 1,000°C). This study considered three sets of GO-reinforced cement composites with 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt% of GO (by weight of cement); the water–cement ratio in all the mixtures was 0.5. To characterize the chemical composition, microstructure, and hydration degree resulting from GO addition, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, derivative thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) were used. The experimental results revealed that GO addition changed the microstructural composition and pore diameter distribution of the cement composite. The optimal amount of GO required for improving the mechanical properties of the cement composite under both unheated and heated conditions was identified to be 0.1 wt%. GO improves the cement matrices’ ability to bind with GO nanosheets, leading to compressive strength retention and decreased micro-cracking (computed by material and defected volume changes by Micro-CT analysis). This is primarily due to the hydration products. However, the optimal amount of GO can result in nanomaterial agglomeration, thus lowering the thermal resistance of the cement composite. Overall, the study identified GO as a nano-additive with the potential to improve the strength and toughness of the cement composites. Moreover, the effect of elastic modulus was also evaluated. As a result, the GO microstructure analysis revealed that it has a porous structure with a visible crack pattern.

Introduction: Accurate assessment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) function is vital for guiding treatment. Nevertheless, the presence of tibial subluxation in the neutral position of a patient with an ACL injury may potentially introduce a confounding factor. This study aims to investigate whether tibial subluxation in the neutral position affects the diagnosis of anterior instability in patients with ACL injuries, potentially impacting the reliability and diagnostic accuracy of stress radiography. Methods: This study included 88 patients: 30 with acute complete ACL tears (acute group), 28 with chronic complete ACL tears (chronic group), and 30 patients who underwent knee arthroscopic surgery other than ACL reconstruction (control group). Side-to-side differences (SSD) in stress radiography were measured using the Telos load status and the SSD of the gap between the Telos load and unload statuses. Diagnostic accuracy of the two methods was assessed using areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs). Results: The load SSD (5.92 ± 5.28 mm) was higher than the load-unload SSD (4.27 ± 5.99 mm) in the chronic group (P = 0.017). The load SSD demonstrated a significantly higher diagnostic value than that of the load-unload SSD in the combined group (AUC = 0.920 vs. 0.830; P = 0.012) and chronic group (AUC = 0.913 vs. 0.754; P = 0.002). After adjusting the symptoms for radiographic duration from 6 to 3 months in the chronic group, the load SSD exhibited a significantly higher diagnostic value (AUC = 0.902) than that of the load-unload SSD (AUC = 0.740; P < 0.001). Conclusion: The load SSD provides superior diagnostic accuracy compared to the load-unload SSD in ACL tear cases, where static anterior tibial subluxation may result in false negatives. Although load-unload SSD may have diagnostic value within the first 3 months post-injury, the load SSD method provides a reliable assessment of ACL function for patients beyond this timeframe. Tungsten carbide (WC) in Ni-based powders is a promising candidate for laser-based additive manufacturing because WC is an extremely hard material, whereas Ni is tough and weldable. However, WC particles that are directly exposed to a laser beam can be degraded or disintegrated into tungsten and carbon as a result of excess energy. In contrast, particles in the melt pool are relatively stable. In this study, the direct energy deposition method was used with irregular and spherical WC particles in metal powder. Irregular WC particles were found to be more directly affected by laser irradiation. To explain the effects of WC particle shapes on direct laser damage, a finitepoint calculation was performed to estimate the sinking time in the melt pool. The rectangular shape particles a longer sinking time depending on the rotation angle, whereas the spherical particles sank uniformly based on the difference in the effective area of resistance.
