We report simulation studies of 33 single intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) using coarse-grained bead-spring models where interactions among different amino acids are introduced through a hydropathy matrix and additional screened Coulomb interaction for the charged amino acid beads. Our simulation studies of two different hydropathy scales (HPS1, HPS2) [Dignon et al., PLoS Comput. Biol. 14, e1005941 (2018); Tesei et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 118, e2111696118 (2021)] and the comparison with the existing experimental data indicate an optimal interaction parameter ϵ = 0.1 and 0.2 kcal/mol for the HPS1 and HPS2 hydropathy scales. We use these best-fit parameters to investigate both the universal aspects as well as the fine structures of the individual IDPs by introducing additional characteristics. (i) First, we investigate the polymer-specific scaling relations of the IDPs in comparison to the universal scaling relations [Bair et al., J. Chem. Phys. 158, 204902 (2023)] for the homopolymers. By studying the scaled end-to-end distances ⟨ R N 2 ⟩ / (2 L ℓ p ) and the scaled transverse fluctuations l ̃ ⊥ 2 = ⟨ l ⊥ 2 ⟩ / L , we demonstrate that IDPs are broadly characterized with a Flory exponent of ν ≃ 0.56 with the conclusion that conformations of the IDPs interpolate between Gaussian and self-avoiding random walk chains. Then, we introduce (ii) Wilson charge index (W) that captures the essential features of charge interactions and distribution in the sequence space and (iii) a skewness index (S) that captures the finer shape variation of the gyration radii distributions as a function of the net charge per residue and charge asymmetry parameter. Finally, our study of the (iv) variation of ⟨Rg⟩ as a function of salt concentration provides another important metric to bring out finer characteristics of the IDPs, which may carry relevant information for the origin of life. Purpose: This study investigated Gaelic games players' (1) use of postexercise recovery strategies; (2) recovery strategies according to sport, biological sex, and playing standard; and (3) recovery strategy periodization. Methods: Participants were a total of 1178 Gaelic players (n = 574 female), age 24.6 (6.6) years. These players completed a questionnaire investigating postexercise recovery strategies. Participants were further dichotomized by playing standard into developmental (club/collegiate; n = 869) and national (intercounty; n = 309) levels and by sporting codes: Gaelic football (n = 813), Camogie/hurling (n = 342), and handball (n = 23). Results: Active recovery (90.4%), cold temperature exposure (79.5%), regular sleep routine (79.1%), strategic nutritional intake (72.3%), and massage (68.8%) were the most commonly used recovery strategies. Recovery strategy use was periodized by 30% of players. A significantly larger proportion of national-level players apply cold temperatures (86.7% vs 73.1%; P =.001) and nutritional strategies (80.1% vs 69.2%; P =.012) when compared with developmental players. A significantly larger proportion of female players have a regular sleep routine (82.6% vs 75.1%; P =.037), apply external heat (63.4% vs 48.5%; P =.002), and perform stretching (76.5% vs 66.4%; P =.002) postexercise when compared with male players. A significantly larger proportion of male players employ nutritional strategies (77.6% vs 67.5%; P =.007) and consume a combination of protein and carbohydrate (62.1% vs 28.0%; P <.001) postexercise when compared with female players. Conclusion: Gaelic games players regularly implement a range of postexercise recovery strategies in an attempt to expediate the return of performance capacity and psychophysiological status to preexercise levels. People with Parkinson's Disease (PwPD) have motor symptoms that directly interfere on dry land walking performance. Despite the shallow water walking is a viable and beneficial physical intervention for PwPD, it lacks information on the comparison of the biomechanical responses of the shallow water walking by PwPD and age paired healthy individuals. Are there differences in the spatiotemporal and angular responses of shallow water walking by older adults with and without Parkinson's disease? In this cross-sectional study, ten older adults (9 men/1 women) with Parkinson disease (PwPD group) and ten older adults (3 men/7 women) without Parkinson's disease (Older group) walked in shallow water at self-selected comfortable speed on pool floor in the immersion depths of waist and xiphoid levels. The 2D kinematic data from the sagittal plane was collected to calculate the walking speed, stride length, stride frequency, duty factor, walk ratio, lower limb joints' range of motion and peak angular speed Both groups reduced similarly the walking speed with the immersion depth increase. The speed decrease was achieved by a reducing both the stride frequency and stride length only in the PwPD. The PwPD had lower contact phase than Older in the waist depth, probably due to the reduced risk of fall in water immersion and to attenuate drag force effects. The total range of joint motion was similar between groups, while the peak angular speed of ankle and knee reduced in the deeper depth in both groups. The present findings can help professionals of aquatic rehabilitation to choose the best depth for exercise programs, according to the treatment objectives. Purpose: Uncertainty exists if post-resistance exercise hydrotherapy attenuates chronic inflammatory and hormone responses. The effects of repeated post-resistance exercise water immersion on inflammatory and hormone responses in athletes were investigated. Methods: Male, academy Super Rugby players (n = 18, 19.9 ± 1.5 y, 1.85 ± 0.06 m, 98.3 ± 10.7 kg) participated in a 12-week programme divided into 3 × 4-week blocks of post-resistance exercise water immersion (either, no immersion control [CON]; cold [CWI]; or hot [HWI] water immersion), utilising a randomised cross-over pre-post design. Fasted, morning blood measures were collected prior to commencement of first intervention block, and every fourth week thereafter. Linear mixed-effects models were used to analyse main (treatment, time) and interaction effects. Results: Repeated CWI (p = 0.025, g = 0.05) and HWI (p < 0.001, g = 0.62) reduced creatine kinase (CK), compared to CON. HWI decreased (p = 0.013, g = 0.59) interleukin (IL)-1ra, compared to CON. HWI increased (p < 0.001–0.026, g = 0.06–0.17) growth factors (PDGF-BB, IGF-1), compared to CON and CWI. CWI increased (p = 0.004, g = 0.46) heat shock protein-72 (HSP-72), compared to HWI. Conclusion: Post-resistance exercise CWI or HWI resulted in trivial and moderate reductions in CK, respectively, which may be partly due to hydrostatic effects of water immersion. Post-resistance exercise HWI moderately decreased IL-1ra, which may be associated with post-resistance exercise skeletal muscle inflammation influencing chronic resistance exercise adaptive responses. Following post-resistance exercise water immersion, CWI increased HSP-72 suggesting a thermoregulatory response indicating improved adaptive inflammatory responses to temperature changes, while HWI increased growth factors (PDGF-BB, IGF-1) indicating different systematic signalling pathway activation. Our data supports the continued use of post-resistance exercise water immersion recovery strategies of any temperature during in-season competition phases for improved inflammatory adaptive responses in athletes. Objective(s): This study aimed to investigate the effects of Warm Water Immersion (WWI) on inflammation, kidney function, and kidney tissue damage in rats with diabetes mellitus (DM). Materials and Methods: Forty male rats were divided into four groups: Healthy Control (HC), Diabetic Control (DC), Diabetic Rats treated with WWI (DW), and Healthy Rats treated with WWI (HW). Daily 15-minute WWI sessions at 43 °C were administered for eight weeks. Various parameters including lipids, fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1C, insulin, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), HSP70, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), urinary albumin excretion, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), oxidative stress, anti-oxidant parameters, and gene expression of RAGE, VEGF, and TGFß1 were assessed. Histological examination of kidney tissue was also conducted. Results: Significant reductions in FBS, AGEs, glutathione, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and nitric oxide (NO) levels were observed in the DW group compared to DC. Expression of RAGE, VEGF, and TGFß1 genes decreased in DW. Triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol were lower in DW. Insulin, HDL cholesterol, catalase, total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC), and tissue HSP70 were higher in DW. Histological assessment revealed reduced kidney damage in DW compared to DC. Conclusion: WWI for eight weeks shows promise in mitigating diabetic nephropathy in rats, suggesting its potential as a non-invasive adjunctive therapy for managing diabetes complications. To explore how plyometric-based hydro-kinesiotherapy (Plyo-HKT) would affect pain, muscle strength, postural stability, and functional performance in a convenience sample of children with hemophilic knee arthropathy (HKA). Forty-eight children with HKA (age: 8–16 years) were randomly allocated to the Plyo-HKT group (n = 24; underwent the Plyo-HKT for 45 min, twice/week over 12 wk in succession) or the comparison group (n = 24; performed the standard exercise rehabilitation at an equivalent frequency and duration). Pain, peak concentric torque of quadriceps and hamstring (produced at two angular velocities: 120 and 180 o/sec), dynamic limits of postural stability (DLPS), and functional performance [Functional Independence Score in Hemophilia (FISH) and 6-Minute Walk Test (6-MWT)] were assessed pre- and post-intervention. In contrast with the comparison group, the Plyo-HKT group achieved more favorable pre-to-post changes in pain (p =.028, η2p = 0.10), peak torque of quadriceps [120°/sec (p =.007, η2P = 0.15); 180°/sec (p =.011, η2P = 0.13)] and hamstring [120°/sec (p =.024, η2P = 0.11); 180°/sec (p =.036, η2P = 0.09)], DLPSdirectional [forward (p =.007, η2P = 0.15); backward (p =.013, η2P = 0.12); affected side (p =.008, η2P = 0.14); non-affected side (p =.002, η2P = 0.20)], DLPSoverall (p <.001, η2P = 0.32), and functional performance [FISH (p <.001, η2p = 0.26); 6-MWT (p =.002, η2p = 0.19)]. Plyo-HKT is likely helpful for reducing pain, improving strength, enhancing postural stability, and boosting functional capabilities in children with HKA. Virtual Reality (VR) has been frequently used as an engaging, interactive, and effective non-pharmacological distraction technique for children during painful procedures, including burnt wound care. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of virtual reality on pain and clinical outcomes during hydrotherapy for children with burns. A randomized controlled pretest, during, and post-test research design was utilized. Sixty children with burns underwent hydrotherapy, divided randomly and assigned equally into two groups. Children of the control group received the standard pharmacological treatment of the unit to manage pain and stabilize their physiological parameters throughout the three days of study. Children of the virtual reality intervention group received all basic standard care as the control group plus VR intervention across different software content, and interaction immersion designs which took place using a cell phone coupled with the three-dimensional (3D) image glasses. Outcome measures were physiological parameters, wound healing, and Face, Leg, Activity, Cry and Consolability (FLACC) Behavioral Pain Assessment Scale. This study was carried out in the burns unit at the Plastic, Reconstructive, and Burns Surgery Center affiliated to Mansoura University, from September to November 2023. Children in the study group had lower pain scores, more stable physiological parameters, and higher rates of wound healing compared to the control group with a statistically significant difference between both groups. Using VR intervention significantly reduced pain intensity, enhanced physiological parameters and promoted the rate of wound healing in children with burns during hydrotherapy. Simple Summary: Water treadmill (WT) exercise is popular for cross-training of sport horses. The nature of the horse's adaptation to WT exercise could be influenced by the type of session used and how often it is conducted. The study's aim was to compare the gait characteristics of 48 sport horses during a standardised WT exercise test (WTSET) at the start, i.e., 'week 0', and after 20 and 40 weeks of WT exercise incorporated within their normal training programme. Horses were recruited from the existing client populations of two commercial water treadmill venues for the purpose of this longitudinal, observational study. Measurements of limb, back, poll, wither, and pelvic movement were taken during the WTSET at weeks 0, 20, and 40. Compared to week 0, the results showed changes in gait characteristics during the WTSET at weeks 20 and 40 that reflected adaptation to walking in water, including increased protraction and decreased retraction of the fore and hind limbs. Kinematic responses were primarily dependent upon water depth, but previous experience of the horses with WT exercise, the number of WT exercise sessions carried out per month, and the type of the WT exercise session used during training with respect to speed and depth used were also influential. The WT session design and frequency of use can influence the nature of the kinematic responses to water walking seen over time, suggesting that WT exercise sessions within a normal sport horse training programme could be designed in accordance with specific training goals. Repeated exposure to water treadmill (WT) exercise could elicit kinematic responses reflecting adaptation to WT exercise. The study's aim was to compare the responses of a group of sport horses to a standardised WT exercise test (WTSET) carried out at three time points, week 0 (n = 48), week 20 (n = 38), and week 40 (n = 29), throughout a normal training programme incorporating WT exercise. Horses were recruited from the existing client populations of two commercial water treadmill venues for the purpose of this longitudinal, observational study. Limb, back, poll, wither, and pelvic kinematics were measured during the WTSET using videography, optical motion capture, and inertial motion sensors. Forelimb and hindlimb protraction increased (p < 0.001 for both), and forelimb and hindlimb retraction decreased (p < 0.001 for both) at week 40 compared to week 0. Caudal thoracic flexion–extension and lateral bend ranges of movement were greater at week 40 compared to week 0 (p < 0.001 and p = 0.009, respectively). Increased training speed was associated with increased craniocaudal poll movement (p = 0.021), decreased forelimb protraction (p = 0.008), and increased forelimb retraction (p = 0.021). In addition to characteristic changes in kinematics due to increasing water depth, regular WT exercise resulted in kinematic adaptation to movement in water. Factors such as the frequency of WT sessions and the type of session used with respect to depth and speed were seen to influence the nature of the adaptation. Depression and anxiety are common mental health problems that negatively affect the quality of life. Functioning, social relationships, daily activities, and physical health are negatively affected. Therefore, it is very important to manage these problems and to investigate effective treatments for individuals to lead a healthy life. This study aims to evaluate the effect of hydrotherapy and balneotherapy on anxiety and depression. Randomized controlled trials published in the last 20 years comparing hydrotherapy and balneotherapy with active control or waiting lists in adults with anxiety and depressive symptoms were included. Pubmed, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases were searched until August 2023. The random effects model and fixed effects model were used for data analysis. The heterogeneity of the study was assessed using the I2 index, and publication bias was assessed using Egger and Begg tests and funnel plots. Seventeen eligible studies with a sample size of 977 participants were selected. After data analysis, the results showed that hydrotherapy and balneotherapy led to a statistically significant reduction in anxiety scores (SMD: 0.46 95% CI: 0.27, 0.65), depression scores (SMD: 0.53 95% CI: 0.38, 0.67). Subgroup analysis based on intervention type showed that balneotherapy reduced anxiety scores (SMD: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.27, 0.65) but not depression scores. Evidence suggests that hydrotherapy and balneotherapy can reduce anxiety and depression in adults. Based on these findings, hydrotherapy and balneotherapy can be applied as an adjunct to standard treatments to improve the mental health of adults. Concrete production faces challenges due to the depletion of natural sand and the need for more sustainable practices. This study investigates the use of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) as partial replacements for cement and sand, respectively. SCBA was tested as a 5%, 10%, and 15% replacement by weight of cement, while RPET was used as a 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% substitute for sand by volume. Concrete samples were cured in water for 7, 28, and 56 days. The mix with 5% SCBA and 10% RPET showed comparable compressive strength to conventional concrete and improved split tensile strength by 1.2% and 11.61% at 28 and 56 days, respectively. The compressive strength-to-weight ratio of this blend was less than 3% lower than conventional concrete. This combination also maintained similar water absorption and fire resistance characteristics. These results suggest that 5% SCBA and 10% RPET are effective in enhancing the sustainability of concrete while maintaining structural performance, contributing to more environmentally friendly construction practices. This study aimed to investigate the bisphenol A (BPA) release from four CAD/CAM splint materials: three polycarbonate‐based (DD BioSplint C, Splint Plus Biostar, Temp Premium Flexible) and one polymethylmethacrylate‐based (Temp Basic) material. From each material, ten cylindrical samples (n = 40) were immersed in high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) grade water following ISO 10993‐12 and incubated for 24 h in an incubation shaker at 37°C and 112 rpm. Following BPA derivatization, analysis was performed by high‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC‐MS/MS). After 24 h of incubation, all investigated materials released significant amounts of BPA compared to water blanks. The material‐dependent elution increased in the following order: DD BioSplint C < Splint Plus Biostar < Temp Basic < Temp Premium Flexible. Subtracting extraneous BPA, the concentrations ranged between 2.27 ng/mL and 12.65 ng/mL. After extrapolating the concentrations in relation to the average surface area of occlusal splints, the amount of BPA per mL exceeded the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) set by the European Union for a person weighing 70 kg by 1.32–6.16 times. Contrary to the release from previously investigated materials, BPA elution from CAD/CAM splint materials was highly elevated. Concrete pavements require substantial amount of water for curing process which is a challenge considering its large surface area and to mitigate this challenge, use of internal curing agents is considered in this study. The use of super-absorbent polymer (SAP) has been reported in this regard the increased porosity resulting after release of internal water is a major concern here. Alternatively, polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) can be considered for self-curing. Scarce literature is available with respect to these two polymers. In this study, the workability, strength, durability, and microstructure properties of pavement-quality concrete with PVA and PEG were analyzed and compared with that of SAP and conventionally cured concrete. The results indicated that at the optimal dosage, PVA/PEG exhibited better mechanical and durability properties when compared to conventionally cured concrete; SAP exhibited a reduction in strength for dosages higher than 0.6%, due to the increased porosity and this was verified through SEM images also. The measurement of internal humidity on concrete slabs showed that internal humidity retention was better in the case of PEG. Pavement design as per IRC:58-2015 design guideline and cost analysis for the respective thickness showed that the use of certain self-curing additives results in economic advantages also. Outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, as a complex and multimodal treatment concept, makes significant use of methods that are assigned to conservative orthopedics, in particular the procedures of physical therapy. In contrast to physiotherapy and medical training therapy, physical therapy is a form of therapy provided with technology. The spectrum ranges from hydrotherapy, mechanotherapy and thermotherapy to balneotherapy, massage forms and electrotherapy. Climatotherapy, phototherapy and aerosol/inhalation therapy have less of an impact on the orthopaedic field. Although the forms of therapy are often referred to as passive, the effect is based on physical laws, physiological reactions and adaptation. In addition, these are predominantly forms of therapy, some of which have been in use for centuries, some for thousands of years, these efficient treatments with a good safety and tolerability profile gained by means of empiricism. This paper aims to investigate the effects of using palm leaves ash, when it partially replaces the concrete cement content, to treat the effects of using seawater as a mixing water and curing water on concrete. The paper also explores the suitable replacement percentage of cement with palm ash to give the concrete more strength and suitable workability. A slump test was used to assess the fresh concrete's workability, as well as concrete strength testing after 7, 28, and 60 days. It was found that 5% of the cement replacement with palm leaves ash in conjunction with the full replacement of the mixing of pure water with seawater achieves an 84.188% increase in the ultimate compressive strength after 28 days of curing in tap water compared with that gained by normal concrete with mixing in seawater. Also, a reasonable workability was obtained. In the case of curing with seawater for 28 days, the partial replacement of 2.5% of cement with palm leaves ash achieves a 70.75% increase in the compressive strength when compared to normal concrete with mixing in seawater. São Vicente Medical Spa is located in mainland Portugal (Southwest Europe) and has been using thermal waters for therapeutic purposes for a long time. The Romans were known to have used its sulphureous waters around 2000 years ago. The spa has a Roman bathhouse that is still visible today, and its ruins were discovered during recent excavations. In this work are presented some elements of the Roman baths, the current baths, as well as the main aspects of the thermal park, with the location of the sulphureous water abstractions, including the classic thermal spring, which discharges water at a temperature of 18.6 ºC. The geomorphological, geological, and hydrogeological aspects are outlined, giving particular attention to the water chemistry of the various abstractions to develop multiple applications of geothermometers to contribute to the knowledge of the geohydraulic model at depth and the geothermal potential of the aquifer system. The conclusions are drawn from a conceptual model, including the reservoir depth, which, according to various scenarios, will be between 3 km and 8 km, in a favorable situation, respectively, to reach groundwater with temperatures between 112 ºC and 118 ºC. Finally, some remarks are made about the location of the new groundwater abstraction and the depth to be reached to increase the exploitation flows and their temperature. Lastly, it outlined new studies to improve the current geohydraulic model and to investigate its relationship with the deep aquifer systems in its neighborhood, namely the Entre-os-Rios hydromineral system. Background: The number of children experiencing postnatal situations of neurological risk (such as psycho-motor developmental disorders and delays) after birth has increased in recent years. These infants often require multiple pediatric interventions to address functional problems that might generate stress, anxiety, and discomfort. The aim of the present study is to determine whether the level of salivary cortisol, as a stress marker, increases after hydrotherapy and land-based therapy in children at risk of or currently presenting delayed psycho-motor development. Methods: Saliva samples were collected from 25 children (aged 3–36 months) between June 2022 and January 2023 at the Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Clinical Management Unit of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital, Granada, Spain. Three samples were collected from each child, representing baseline, post-hydrotherapy and post-land-based therapy. Result: All salivary cortisol levels were within the normal range. Resting values were the highest, and both modes of therapy decreased salivary cortisol levels. There were no statistically significant differences between the two therapies. Conclusions: Both therapies appear to be useful for treating children with psychomotor developmental disorders without increasing stress during physiotherapy sessions. This study aimed to experimentally investigate the compressive strength and air voids of cement pastes with varying dosages of Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) and water-to-cement (w/c) ratios. Cement pastes were prepared using three different w/c ratios of 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6, along with different dosages of SAP ranging from 0.2% to 0.5% by weight of cement. Additionally, SAP was introduced in two forms: dry and wet. After casting the cubes, two distinct curing conditions were employed: curing at a temperature of 20 °C with a Relative Humidity (RH) of 60% (Curing 1), and water curing (Curing 2). The results revealed that the addition of SAP increased early strength when subjected to Curing 1, followed by a decrease in later strength. On the other hand, samples with SAP and water curing exhibited higher strength compared to those without SAP, especially with w/c ratios of 0.4 and 0.5. However, at a w/c ratio of 0.6, nearly all samples showed a reduction in strength compared to those without SAP. Furthermore, air void analysis was performed on all samples cured for 28 days using an image analysis technique. The samples containing wet SAP resulted in a higher total air content compared to the samples with dry SAP. Additionally, the incorporation of wet SAP in cement paste led to lower specific surface areas and a higher spacing factor than the samples with dry SAP. These findings suggest that the clumping of wet SAP particles during presoaking resulted in coarser air voids compared to the samples containing dry SAP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe medical condition resulting in substantial physiological and functional consequences for the individual. People with SCI are characterised by a chronic, low-grade systemic inflammatory state, which contributes to further undesirable secondary injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of adding aquatic therapy to the standard physiotherapy treatment, implemented in two different schedules, on systemic inflammation in SCI patients. Additionally, the relationship between cytokine blood levels and changes in functionality (measured with the 6MWT, 10MWT, WISCI, BBS, and TUG tests) throughout the study was assessed. A quantitative multiplexed antibody assay was performed to measure the expression level of 20 pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in blood samples from SCI patients at three time points: baseline, week 6, and immediately post-intervention (week 12). This study identified a complex signature of five cytokines (IL-12p70, IL-8, MCP-1, IL-1α, and IP10) associated with the time course of the two physiotherapy programs. Two other cytokines (IL-4 and TNF-α) were also associated with the functional recovery of patients. Adhesives are widely used in daily life. However, during their preparation or application, traditional adhesives easily release toxic gases, which adversely affect the human body and the environment. Herein, a physically crosslinked tannic acid (TA)-based adhesive is prepared by forming hydrogen bonding between cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), polyacrylamide (PAM), and TA. Different characteristics of the prepared adhesives, including morphology, water content, biocompatibility, curing time, and adhesion properties, were investigated. Lap shear strength of the adhesive depends on the water content and curing time, reaching a maximum at a curing time of 48 h. The addition of CNCs enhances the lap shear strength, with the adhesive sample with 6.0 g CNCs exhibiting a high lap shear strength of 5.5 MPa on wood, which is 34% higher than that of the PAM/TA adhesive. Moreover, TA-based adhesives have excellent biocompatibility. These CNC/PAM/TA adhesives have excellent potential for application in the furniture, construction, and building industries. Introduction: Ankle sprains are the second most common sports injury after knee injuries, with about 85% of them affecting the lateral ankle ligaments. These injuries are particularly prevalent in sports like basketball and volleyball. Purpose: To investigate the effect of Aquatic therapy as an early rehabilitation protocol for elite athletes with acute lateral ankle sprain grade III on back-to-sport time, dynamic balance, pain, Athletic performance, and muscle power compared to land-based exercise training. Methods: Thirty elite athletes have ankle sprain grade III with sprain onset from 1 to 7 days, their age ranges from 18–30 years old were recruited. All participants are professional athletes; mainly participating in above-head sports such as volleyball and basketball. The patients were randomly allocated into two treatment groups: Group I (control group): 15 patients received a conventional physical therapy program of structured therapeutic exercise program, manual therapy and land-based exercises, in addition to external support, and Group II (Aquatic therapy group): 15 patients received aquatic training. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to measure the pain intensity, while the dynamic balance was measured by the Star Excursion Balance Test. Athletic performance was measured by HOP Tests (Single, Triple, 6-m, and Cross-over hops) aided by the Agility T-Test (ATT) and Illinois Agility Test (IAT). Muscle power was tested by a Single Leg Press. Finally, back to sports time was recorded for each participant in both groups. Results: There was a significant interaction effect of Aquatic therapy and time for VAS (p < 0.001), single hop (p < 0.001), triple hop (p < 0.001), cross-over hop (p < 0.001), IAT (p = 0.019) and ATT (p < 0.001) of both affected and nonaffected. There was no significant interaction effect of Aquatic therapy and time for 6-MHT of affected (p = 0.923), and nonaffected (p = 0.140). There was a significant main effect of time for all dependent variables (p < 0.001) except for 6-MHT of affected (p = 0.939), nonaffected (p = 0.109), and IAT (p = 0.099). The Star excursion dynamic balance test (SEBT) and Single leg press revealed a significant difference between groups on affected and non-affected sides (p < 0.001*). Lastly and most importantly the back-to-sport time revealed a significant difference in the return-to-sport time in favor of the Aquatic therapy group who returned faster than the control group (p < 0.001*). Conclusion: Aquatic therapy is more effective than traditional protocols regarding early rehabilitation of acute ankle sprain grade III in Elite professional athletes for reducing pain intensity, improving dynamic balance and athletic performance and power and accelerating their return to sports time. Several therapies have been developed to reduce cognitive decline associated with aging. Aquatic exercises, which are widely used to enhance functional capacity, may play a role in stimulating cognitive functions. This study investigated the effects of a 3-month aquatic exercise program on cognitive functions in community-dwelling older adults. In this prospective, single-blinded, controlled clinical trial, 31 participants were allocated to either the experimental (aquatic exercises) or control (no-exercise) group. The intervention program consisted of exercises conducted twice a week in a 1.2 m deep indoor pool. The main outcome measures were cognitive functions, assessed using Raven's Progressive Matrices test and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. A repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to assess the impact of the exercise program. The effect sizes (η2p) were reported when a level of significance was achieved (p < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the participants who underwent aquatic exercises showed positive outcomes in Raven's Progressive Matrices test (p = 0.046; η2p = 0.131) and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (p = 0.001, η2p = 0.589). Complementary analyses of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test indicated that the benefits of the aquatic exercise were observed in terms of the number of trials (p = 0.001, η2p = 0.478), number of errors (p = 0.001, η2p = 0.458), and number of non-perseverative errors (p = 0.001, η2p = 0.302). The results indicate that a period of three months of aquatic exercise was beneficial for stimulating specific aspects of the cognitive function of community-dwelling older individuals. Key Clinical Message: Traditional treatment options are often insufficient in treating severe dry eyes caused by systemic diseases. This case demonstrates that ocular immersion hydrotherapy significantly alleviated symptoms and ocular surface inflammation in ocular graft‐versus‐host disease. Based on these findings, we propose it as a promising option for managing severe dry eye disease. This case report investigates the efficacy of ocular immersion hydrotherapy (OIH) in treating severe dry eye secondary to ocular graft‐versus‐host disease (oGVHD). A 35‐year‐old female with a history of acute myeloid leukemia‐M2 and subsequent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) developed high‐intensity oGVHD unresponsive to conventional treatments, including topical corticosteroids and lubricants. We introduced OIH, utilizing sterilized swimming goggles filled with intraocular irrigating solutions, providing a moist microenvironment for the ocular surface. Symptoms were significantly relieved after treatment. Corneal filaments and epithelial defects were significantly reduced, and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) demonstrated resolution of inflammation and reappearance of corneal nerves. This case indicates that OIH could be a promising therapeutic approach for severe dry eye conditions arising from oGVHD, particularly for patients refractory to traditional treatments. This is a case of a 21-year-old male, African American Division I basketball player with a fibula stress fracture. The athlete initially reported pain, without distinct injury and was diagnosed with a stress fracture. After a short period of immobilization in a walking boot, this individual opted to undergo surgical intervention consisting of an intramedullary screw inserted in his left fibula. This was in consultation with the orthopedic team physician and orthopedic trauma surgeon. After a brief period of rest and continued immobilization in a walking boot, weight bearing as tolerated, the patient was able to start rehabilitation. He continued rehabilitation and progressive return to activity and was able to return to limited practice approximately 4 weeks. He played 13 min of a game in under 5 weeks (31 days). Stress fractures are not uncommon in basketball players, but a fibula stress fracture is one not often seen, and there is a paucity of data in the literature regarding this injury. A nonoperative approach to treatment of a fibula stress fracture typically yields good results but may lead to longer return than a surgical intervention. Objective: To identify tendon transfer surgeries and postsurgical physical therapy interventions in people with massive rotator cuff (RC) tears. Methods: The literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, and PEDro databases from inception to September 2022. Studies with patients diagnosed with massive RC tears undergoing tendon transfers that reported physical therapy interventions after surgery were included. Two reviewers pooled the data into ad hoc summary tables with the following information: authors, year, study characteristics (sample size, tendon transfer surgical used, approach type, preoperative risk, deficit addressed, additional surgical interventions), and physical therapy interventions (early stage, intermediate stage, and advanced stage). Results: Forty‐four articles (59.0% case series) were included, with a total sample of 1213 participants. The most frequently used surgery was the isolated tendon transfer of the latissimus dorsi (49.1%). Most of the studies reported three main stages of physical therapy interventions after tendon transfer surgery: early stage (lasting 5–6 weeks), intermediate stage (started at 7–12 weeks), and advanced stage (started at 12 weeks). Physical therapy interventions included passive, active‐assisted, resisted therapeutic exercise, and hydrotherapy. Conclusions: The evidence regarding physical therapy interventions after RC tendon transfer surgery is limited to the number and duration of the stages and general characteristics without specifying the type and dose of the interventions. Future research with high methodological quality should integrate more detailed rehabilitation protocols to better guide therapeutic decisions after RC transfer surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phenol–formaldehyde (phenolic) thermosets are known for excellent heat and chemical resistance, high flame retardance, and good mechanical performance. However, phenolics are also known for their high brittleness, and tendency to form voids, due to a condensation reaction forming water during curing. These voids can decrease the mechanical performance of the resultant phenolic composite and introduce undesirable performance characteristics. This work aims to develop a technique that uses high‐pressure infiltration to obtain dense phenolic matrix composites, with commercially available resin and fiber reinforcement. The high‐pressure system developed in this work is compared to a conventional low‐pressure resin infusion technique, and the porosity after each infusion is analyzed. A model of the low‐ and high‐pressure systems was developed, and the predicted time of infiltration was compared to the experimental results. The high‐pressure system had 97% less open porosity after infusion than the low‐pressure technique, suggesting that it can produce a higher‐quality and better‐performing phenolic composite than conventional techniques. Also, the mechanical test performed indicates improved performance for the high‐pressure injection with a 30.73% increase in ultimate tensile strength in comparison to low pressure, indicating better mechanical performance. © 2024 Society of Industrial Chemistry. Objective(s): This study aimed to investigate the effects of Warm Water Immersion (WWI) on inflammation, kidney function, and kidney tissue damage in rats with diabetes mellitus (DM).Materials and Methods: Forty male rats were divided into four groups: Healthy Control (HC), Diabetic Control (DC), Diabetic Rats treated with WWI (DW), and Healthy Rats treated with WWI (HW). Daily 15-minute WWI sessions at 43 °C were administered for eight weeks. Various parameters including lipids, fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1C, insulin, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), HSP70, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), urinary albumin excretion, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), oxidative stress, anti-oxidant parameters, and gene expression of RAGE, VEGF, and TGFß1 were assessed. Histological examination of kidney tissue was also conducted.Results: Significant reductions in FBS, AGEs, glutathione, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and nitric oxide (NO) levels were observed in the DW group compared to DC. Expression of RAGE, VEGF, and TGFß1 genes decreased in DW. Triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol were lower in DW. Insulin, HDL cholesterol, catalase, total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC), and tissue HSP70 were higher in DW. Histological assessment revealed reduced kidney damage in DW compared to DC.Conclusion: WWI for eight weeks shows promise in mitigating diabetic nephropathy in rats, suggesting its potential as a non-invasive adjunctive therapy for managing diabetes complications.

Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children under 14 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the feasibility of aquatic occupational therapy to increase swim skills for children with ASD following 10 weeks of intervention. Eight children, ages three to seven years old, participated in aquatic group-based occupational therapy to increase their swim skills. The Water Orientation Test Alyn-2 (WOTA2) and Goal Attainment Scaling were utilized to assess the change in participant swimmers' skills. Qualitative data were gathered through individual parent interviews. All participants increased in total score on the WOTA2 and 81% of all individualized goals were met or exceeded. Themes derived from parent interviews included benefits of participation, acquired skills, and value of the occupational therapy approach. The results of this study supported the value and feasibility of aquatic occupational therapy to increase swim skills in children with ASD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sugar palm starch waste (SPSW) was biomass that produce from processing of sugar palm starch. SPSW contain high cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Using lignocellulose from SPSW needs a pretreatment method to obtain highpurity cellulose and create an environmentally friendly method. The investigation focuses on determining the optimal NaOH concentration, temperature, and duration for hydrothermal-alkali treatment to remove hemicellulose and lignin, achieving high-purity cellulose. There is no further research regarding optimal conditions related to NaOH concentration, temperature, and duration for hydrothermal-alkali treatment to remove hemicellulose and lignin, achieving high-purity cellulose. This study aims to define optimal conditions for lignin and hemicellulose removal to obtain cellulose with high purity. The delignification process is carried out by hydrothermal and hydrothermal alkali activation. The hydrothermal activation removes hemicellulose, whereas the hydrothermal alkali activation removes lignin. In this study, Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to determine optimum conditions. The results were then structural and morphological identification using XRD, FTIR, and SEM. The optimization results obtained parameter values of 2% NaOH, temperature 120 °C for 120 minutes. The desirability value was 0.774, with a response value of 2.9 ± 1.7% for hemicellulose, 92.35 ± 1.06% for cellulose, and 2.45 ± 0.1% for lignin. FTIR results showed that lignin was absent during the delignification process. Meanwhile, in XRD, during the delignification process, the crystallization index (CI) decreases, and the crystallization size (CS) increases. SEM analysis results show that the morphology of the delignified SPSW becomes smoother after pretreatment, which indicates a decrease in hemicellulose and lignin content and a high level of cellulose purity. Further research is needed on other parameters, such as cellulose yield, energy consumption, and environmental impact. Recent studies have hypothesized that the reinforcing effects of boehmite nanoparticles (BNPs) in polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) are partly related to the particles themselves and partly to the water released from the BNP during curing. In this work, PNCs made from dried BNP (dBNP) with concentrations up to 15 wt% are investigated to differentiate particle and water related effects. The observed trend of the storage modulus in dynamic mechanical thermal analysis measurements was found to be independent of the drying procedure. Stiffness maps from intermodulation atomic force microscopy showed that dBNP leads to a stiffening of the interphase surrounding the particles compared with the unaffected epoxy matrix, while a softer interphase was reported for PNCs with as received BNP. A slight decrease in the glass transition temperature was observed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy related to a lowered crosslink density due to the particles. A significantly higher decrease was reported for PNCs with BNP, attributed to water influencing the curing process. In conclusion, the stiffening of PNC with BNP is related to the particles themselves, while the release of water causes the formation of a soft interphase in the vicinity of the particles and a significant decrease in crosslink density. In this study, the effect of curing humidity on mechanical performance, hydration as well as microstructure for cement paste containing metakaolin (MK) and limestone powder (LP) with various water to binder (w/b) ratios, such as 0.24, 0.36, and 0.48, were investigated. A total of 18 types of slurries were prepared and cured under three levels of humidity [55% relative humidity (RH), 95% RH, and water curing at 20°C] for 28 days. The compressive and flexural strengths were measured to evaluate the influence of humidity on the strength performances of pastes. The MK reaction degree of pastes was tested using the method of selective dissolution in hydrochloric acid. X-ray diffraction (XRD), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were employed to evaluate the hydration and microstructure of paste. Research results demonstrated that the strengths of pastes generally decreased with curing humidity. Curing at 55% RH can obviously degrade the flexural strength of pastes compared with curing at 95% RH and water curing. The influence of humidity on the compressive strength of MK-containing pastes decreased with the decrease of w/b. The compressive strength of 0.24 w/b pastes containing MK at various humidities were similar. Increasing humidity can enhance the MK reaction degree of pastes with different w/b ratios, which is responsible for the enhanced strength tendency of pastes with humidity. Similar to the compressive strength tendency, humidity had insignificant effects on the MK pozzolanic reaction of pastes with a low w/b ratio. XRD results demonstrated that raising humidity can further increase the synergistic effect of MK and LP. The quantities of monocarboaluminate (Mc) and hemicarboaluminate (Hc) in paste with a high w/b under water curing were greater than those in pastes cured at 55% RH. The microstructures of pastes investigated using MIP and SEM tests also corresponded well to the results of mechanical performances. The findings of this study can provide some guidance for manufacturing normal concrete (NC), high-performance concrete (HPC) and ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) incorporating MK and LP under different levels of humidity. Introduction: Physiologic edema in the feet can cause discomfort such as pain, muscle cramps and fatigue in the feet when walking and as a result lack of movement and increased probability of thromboembolism in pregnant women. Many non-pharmaceutical methods have been used to improve physiologic edema in pregnancy. None of these methods have been studied in a self-care context. Therefore, the present study was performed with aim to determine and compare the effects of self-care education with effleurage massage, hydrotherapy, and leg elevation on physiologic edema in pregnancy. Methods: The randomized controlled clinical trial study was conducted in 2022 on 129 primigravid women who visited the Mahdieh Tehran Health Center. The samples were randomly divided to four groups: hydrotherapy, massage therapy, leg elevation, and control. The data collection tools included a demographic and obstetric questionnaire, investigation of complications and satisfaction from the intervention, observation checklist and examination before and after the intervention, and a non-elastic meter. The use of hydrotherapy during childbirth has gained relevance due to the demand for natural childbirth and greater respect for the woman’s choice. Studies have shown benefits such as less use of epidural analgesia, increased ability to cope with pain, shorter labor, and a better overall birth experience. Objective: The main objective of this study was to generate further evidence on maternal and birth outcomes associated with the use of hydrotherapy during labor, specifically aiming to describe the effects of water immersion during all stages of labor (first, second, and third) on women. Methodology: A retrospective cohort study was carried out on a random sample of women who gave birth at the Costa del Sol Hospital between January 2010 and December 2020. The calculated sample size was 377 women and the data were extracted from their partograms. After data extraction, two groups were formed: one group used hydrotherapy during childbirth (n = 124), while the other group included women who did not use hydrotherapy during the childbirth process (n = 253). Results: The results highlight significant differences in pain perception, analgesia use, types of labor, and delivery times between the two groups. Women who did not use hydrotherapy reported higher pain perception, with a median (IQR) of 8 (7–9) on a numerical scale, compared to a median (IQR) of 6 (5–7) for the hydrotherapy group. Furthermore, the group without hydrotherapy required epidural analgesia in 40% of cases, while in the hydrotherapy group, it was only necessary in 20%. In terms of the type of delivery, the hydrotherapy group had more spontaneous vaginal deliveries compared to the non-hydrotherapy group, which had more operative vaginal deliveries. The overall duration of labor was longer in the hydrotherapy group, especially in women who arrived at the hospital late in labor. Conclusions: Hydrotherapy is associated with a longer time to delivery. Women with a higher pain tolerance tend to opt for hydrotherapy instead of epidural analgesia.

Hydrotherapy, including the use of therapeutic showers and bathtubs, has been studied for its potential benefits in labor pain management. Previous research has indicated that hydrotherapy can alleviate pain, but comparative studies between therapeutic showers and bathtubs are scarce. Objective: This study aims to compare the effects of therapeutic showers and bathtubs on pain perception, labor duration, use of epidural analgesia, and maternal and neonatal outcomes during labor. Methods: A total of 124 pregnant women were included in this study. Participants were divided into two groups: those who used a therapeutic shower and those who used a bathtub during labor. Pain levels were measured using a visual analog scale (VAS). Labor duration, use of epidural analgesia, types of delivery, maternal outcomes (postpartum hemorrhage, perineal status, maternal hypotension, fever, and breastfeeding), and neonatal outcomes (APGAR scores, fetal heart rate, complications, and neonatal unit admissions) were recorded and analyzed. Results: Both the therapeutic shower and the bathtub effectively reduced pain perception, with the bathtub showing a greater reduction in VAS scores. The therapeutic shower group experienced a significantly shorter labor duration compared to the bathtub group. The majority of participants in both groups did not require epidural analgesia, with no significant differences between the groups. There were no significant differences in the types of delivery. Maternal outcomes indicated a lower incidence of perineal tears and episiotomies in the therapeutic shower group. Neonatal outcomes, including APGAR scores and fetal heart rate, were similar between the groups, with no significant differences in complications or neonatal unit admissions. Conclusions: Both therapeutic showers and bathtubs are effective for pain relief during labor, with the bathtub showing a higher reduction in pain intensity. The therapeutic shower is associated with a shorter labor duration and a lower incidence of perineal tears and episiotomies. Both methods are safe for neonatal well-being, making hydrotherapy a viable non-pharmacological option for pain management in labor. Background: the benefits of water are significant during the birth process. Improved maternal experience of labor, less use of epidurals, better pain management, shorter labor, and a greater sense of control are observed during the birth process. Objective: This report aims to determine the benefits of hydrotherapy in clinical childbirth approaches and its applicability in pain control. Methods: A meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials selected from various databases with no publication date limits was conducted, comparing groups that did not use hydrotherapy with groups that did during labor. Results: Seven articles met the inclusion criteria, with five articles using hot water immersion and two using hot water shower as hydrotherapy treatments. This study identified 840 participants, with the intervention groups including 417 term pregnant women and the control groups including 423 pregnant women. The effect size of hydrotherapy on pain was calculated using the visual analog scale in five articles and analgesic use in the other two articles. Hydrotherapy significantly reduced pain during labor with a mean difference of −0.97 (95% CI: −1.91 to −0.03; I2 = 97.32%, p < 0.001). The duration of the first stage of labor was not significantly affected, with a mean difference of −0.17 h (95% CI: −0.55 to 0.21; I2 = 56.75%, p = 0.059). Additionally, hydrotherapy did not significantly impact the newborns' Apgar scores at 5 min, with a mean difference of 0.18 (95% CI: −0.48 to 0.85; I2 = 2.15%, p = 0.939). Objective: This study sought to examine whether the sense of coherence (SoC) and resilience among female fibromyalgia (FM) patients increased after participation in a fibrotherapy intervention program (FTI) and whether SoC and resilience increased among female FM patients (FFMPs) exposed to security threats who changed their coping strategies to problem-oriented coping. Methods: Ninety-six FFMPs aged 19–75 enrolled in the FTI program led by Rabbi Firer in Sderot, Israel. The intervention program is divided into three stages, each comprising a distinct weekly treatment plan. The treatment plans encompass the following modalities: physiotherapy adapted to FM conditions, group therapy, hydrotherapy, horticultural therapy/cooking therapy, Pilates, pottery therapy, and kundalini yoga. Each stage spans a duration of 10 weeks, culminating in a total program duration of 30 weeks. Results: The findings show that after participating in FTI, the problem-orientation level of coping and health indicators, including functional ability and physiological scores (pre- and post-exertion), increased while psychological distress levels decreased. Overall, all the physiological scales measured before and after the FTI showed a significant improvement among the entire sample. FFMPs with problem-oriented strategies reported higher levels of SoC and resilience after participating in the FTI program. Conclusions: The FTI provided FFMPs with tools to understand the meaning of their disease and its management, whereas before they were preoccupied with the presence of the disease and its negative impact on their lives. The participation of FFMPs in the FTI leads to a perceptual change, the adoption of problem-oriented coping strategies, and the increased utilization of coping resources, namely, SoC and resilience. Problem-oriented coping combined with high SoC and resilience led FFMPs to adopt health strategies such as physical activity and other empowering activities that raised their physical and mental health indicators. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular ailment that leads to the deprivation of motor neurons in the spinal cord, producing denervation and muscle weakness. This case report explains how a patient with type 2 SMA used a therapeutic exercise rehabilitation program in a school environment. Motor functions were assessed by Gross Motor Function Measure-88 (GMFM-88), Manual Muscle Testing (MMT), and Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale (HFMS), which is validated and reliable. This study employed a repeated pre-test post-test measures design. During a year of treatment sessions, the child underwent twice weekly 45-minute physical therapy sessions for 48 weeks. The research was carried out between March 2022 and February 2023. The purpose of the intervention, which comprised a variety of therapeutic workouts, was to enhance physical function and gross motor abilities in an age-appropriate manner. The intervention utilized in this study led to improvements in GMFM-88, HFMS, and MMT total scores. Aim: To consolidate healthcare professionals' insights about waterbirths and water immersion during labour. Design: Mixed studies review. Data Sources: Seven electronic databases were searched from their inception dates till June 2023: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines and Pluye and Hong's mixed studies review framework guided this review. The quality of included studies was evaluated using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Findings were synthesized using the convergent qualitative synthesis method, and results were thematically analysed using Braun and Clarke's framework. Results: Three main themes were identified from the 22 included studies: (1) believing in waterbirths, (2) opposing forces and (3) plotting the course ahead. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals reported different views about waterbirths and water immersion practices; midwives were most likely to support these practices, followed by nurses and lastly, few physicians supported them. Reasons for opposing waterbirths include insufficient training and support from colleagues as well as concerns about work efficiency, waterbirth safety and litigation issues. Impact: The available evidence suggests the need to provide waterbirth training for healthcare professionals, equip healthcare facilities with necessary waterbirth‐related infrastructure and develop appropriate waterbirth policies/guidelines. Healthcare professionals could also consider providing antenatal waterbirth education to women and obtain women's feedback to improve current policies/guidelines. Water purity plays a key role in medical applications such as clinical diagnosis, drug delivery, sterilization, and patient management. One of the most important medical treatments in which the quality of water is very important is hydrotherapy. Most of the patients have weakened immune systems due to existing infections, making them highly vulnerable to new infections from contaminated water in hydrotherapy pools. Therefore, the hydrotherapy water should be tested to ensure the safety of the patients' lives. In this research, a fiber optic bilayer sensor consisting of silver, copper, platinum, nickel, and gold as the metal layer, and scandium oxide as the second layer, has been numerically simulated to test water purity for hydrotherapy applications. The proposed configuration gives water purity detection with a maximum sensitivity of 4594.0°/RIU for Ni/Sc2O3 while the contacting length is considered as 10 mm, which is much higher than the conventional sensor. It is a topic of interest to researchers in related areas. Ag/Sc2O3 exhibits the highest figure of merit value compared to other materials. At the second part of the study, the effect of a silver-aluminum alloy has been investigated to enhance the quality factor of the winner structure (Ag/Sc2O3). The most efficient silver-aluminum combination ratio is found to be 0.1:0.9, which enhances the sensor quality factor from 40.50 to 60.45 (RIU−1) in aqueous media, while the refractive index of water changes from 1.33 to 1.34. Article reports an investigation into the application of the bioethical principles of personalism in hydrotherapeutic practice internationally. A qualitative, phenomenological, purposive and opinionated sampling methodology was used. The sample consisted of 12 international senior aquatic therapists, who participated in semi-structured online interviews. Thematic categorical content analysis was carried out with the support of Atlas Ti software, version 9. As a result, four principles of personalism and three emerging categories were identified: values, principle of vulnerability and the cost-benefit principle. It is concluded that hydrotherapeutic practice is consistent with the personalist current. A principle of utilitarianism and the Barcelona Declaration emerges, as well as values such as honesty, respect and humility. The need to deepen the bioethical principles of personalism in general aquatic practice, as well as in the training processes and bioethical competences acquired by therapists, is raised. The current study explores the effects of four curing methods on the strength of Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) reinforced with different fibers. Four mixtures of RPC, reference (RM-RPC), wavy fiber reinforced (WF-RPC), carbon fiber reinforced (CF-RPC), and micro steel fiber reinforced (MF-RPC) mixes were prepared and cured following four curing methods (normal, autogenous, coating, and warm water). The results revealed that warm water curing achieved the highest values of compressive, flexural, and splitting strength, attaining 138.9 MPa 22.4 MPa, and 20.89 MPa, respectively. The results of using different fiber reinforcement displayed that the compressive strength of fiber-reinforced RPC mixes was notably higher than that of the RM-RPC. The compressive strength increase results were 9.04% for WF-RPC, 24% for CF-RPC, and 27.96% for MF-RPC regardless of the curing method adopted. Flexural strength increased by 21.2%, 38.47%, and 55.86% for WF-RPC, CF-RPC, and MF-RPC, accordingly in autogenous curing, whereas the change in flexural strength was 30.65%, 39.14%, and 36.59%, correspondingly in coating curing and 21.27%, 29.22%, and 39.55%, respectively, for warm water curing. The optimum flexural values were mainly obtained for MF-RPC regardless of the kind of curing used. CF-RPC almost achieved the same results as MF-RPC with slightly lower values. It can be concluded that fiber reinforcement had a more positive influence on the flexural and splitting strength of RPC than on the compressive strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of hydrotherapy during childbirth has gained relevance due to the demand for natural childbirth and greater respect for the woman's choice. Studies have shown benefits such as less use of epidural analgesia, increased ability to cope with pain, shorter labor, and a better overall birth experience. Objective: The main objective of this study was to generate further evidence on maternal and birth outcomes associated with the use of hydrotherapy during labor, specifically aiming to describe the effects of water immersion during all stages of labor (first, second, and third) on women. Methodology: A retrospective cohort study was carried out on a random sample of women who gave birth at the Costa del Sol Hospital between January 2010 and December 2020. The calculated sample size was 377 women and the data were extracted from their partograms. After data extraction, two groups were formed: one group used hydrotherapy during childbirth (n = 124), while the other group included women who did not use hydrotherapy during the childbirth process (n = 253). Results: The results highlight significant differences in pain perception, analgesia use, types of labor, and delivery times between the two groups. Women who did not use hydrotherapy reported higher pain perception, with a median (IQR) of 8 (7–9) on a numerical scale, compared to a median (IQR) of 6 (5–7) for the hydrotherapy group. Furthermore, the group without hydrotherapy required epidural analgesia in 40% of cases, while in the hydrotherapy group, it was only necessary in 20%. In terms of the type of delivery, the hydrotherapy group had more spontaneous vaginal deliveries compared to the non-hydrotherapy group, which had more operative vaginal deliveries. The overall duration of labor was longer in the hydrotherapy group, especially in women who arrived at the hospital late in labor. Conclusions: Hydrotherapy is associated with a longer time to delivery. Women with a higher pain tolerance tend to opt for hydrotherapy instead of epidural analgesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reactive MgO cement (RMC), which undergoes hardening through the reaction of MgO with water and CO2, is a novel cementitious material that has gained significant attention in recent years. The hydration and carbonation processes of RMC samples are significantly affected by the curing method and water content. This work compared the effects of standard curing ((20 ± 1) °C, 95% relative humidity), water curing ((20 ± 1) °C, and carbonation curing ((20 ± 3) °C, 70% relative humidity, 20% (volume fraction) CO2) on the properties of RMC with water-cement ratio (w/c) of 0.5, 0. 6, and 0.7, respectively. The types and content of the phases of the hydration and carbonation reaction products as well as their micro-morphological characteristics were investigated. The results show that the residual content of MgO in samples is 10% ~ 15% (mass fraction) at 3 d and disappears at 14 d under standard curing and water curing. When w/c is 0.6, the compressive strength of paste reaches 7.7 and 3.2 MPa at 14 d under standard curing and water curing, respectively. The strength of paste under carbonation curing is superior to that under standard curing and water curing (3 d compressive strength, 16.19, 0.42, and 0.43 MPa, 14 d compressive strength, 22.34, 7.46 and 7.23 MPa). The quantitative analysis results show that the carbonation product is mainly MgCO3 ⋅ 3H2O. When w/c is 0.6, the content of MgCO3 ⋅ 3H2O is 12.12% and 11.29% higher than that of samples with w/c = 0.5 and 0.7. The main reason for the optimal compressive strength could lies in that these needle-rod MgCO3 ⋅ 3H2O are bonded to each other form a dense microstructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is one of the most frequent childhood dystrophies, affecting cardiopulmonary functions and walking ability. One of the main symptoms is fatigue, which is caused by altered muscle metabolism related to energy expenditure (EE). Aquatic physiotherapy is a therapeutic modality that facilitates the maintenance of this posture because of immersion on the body. This cross-sectional observational study aimed to compare the EE on the ground and water of individuals with DMD through oxygen consumption in the maintenance of sitting posture. The individuals were in a sitting position on the ground and in the water for 20 min for the assessments. The variables peripheral oxygen saturation, heart rate, maximum expiratory pressure, maximum inspiratory pressure, forced vital capacity, respiratory quotient (RQ), and oxygen consumption per kilogram of body weight (VO 2 /kg) were compared, adopting a significance of 5 %. No difference was found between medians and quartiles of RQ when comparing the two environments. The same was observed for VO 2 /Kg values on the ground and in water. The data from this study demonstrate that the EE of individuals with DMD did not change when maintaining a sitting posture on the ground and in water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
