Mixed‐phase stratiform clouds contain numerous liquid, mixed‐phase, and ice clusters, quantifying the cluster scales is potentially helpful to improve the parameterizations of microphysics and radiation models. However, the scales of hydrometeor clusters at different levels of stratiform clouds are not well understood. In this study, using airborne measurements and a large eddy simulation, we show that turbulence plays an important role in controlling the clusters with length of a few hundred meters, while the scales of larger clusters have stronger vertical variations from cloud base to top. The liquid clusters are the largest near the cloud top, while the lengths of ice clusters decrease from cloud base to top. The lengths of mixed‐phase clusters depend on the glaciation process, a faster glaciation results in smaller mixed‐phase clusters. The results improve our understanding on how the liquid and ice are mixed at different levels in stratiform clouds. Accurate estimation and attribution of large‐scale changes in plant transpiration are critical to understand the impacts of vegetation dynamics on the terrestrial hydrological cycle. However, these aspects remain poorly understood due to the limited reliability of global transpiration products. Here we compile data from 101 site‐based transpiration measurements across the globe and use them to constrain three biophysically based data‐driven transpiration products. The constrained transpiration reveals a prominent increasing trend of 0.61–0.79 mm yr−2 during 1980–2021, which is overestimated by 8%–32% in unconstrained transpiration. We further find that the global transpiration increase is mainly driven by leaf area index increase (40%), followed by climate change (19%), though offset partly by CO2‐induced stomatal closure (−38%) and land use and cover change (−3%). Our refined estimates indicate a less substantial increase of global transpiration than previously thought, improving the understanding of transpiration change impact on global hydrological cycle. However, transpiration and its changes are far from constrained due to the lack of field observations. By compiling a large number of in situ transpiration measurements, we correct three widely used transpiration products using the in situ data (i.e., constraints). We find that the original transpiration trend reflects an overestimation by 8%–32% compared to our constrained results, indicating that cautions should be taken when using the unconstrained products to detect transpiration trend. By combining five land surface models, we further find that the transpiration increase is mainly driven by leaf area index increase and climate change, whereas CO2‐induced stomatal closure and land use and cover change offset a considerable part of this increase. The effectiveness of dehydration and utilization processes for citric acid dewatered sludge is hampered by its high concentrations of polysaccharides, proteins, and water-binding properties of microbial extracellular polymers (EPS). This research explores the efficacy and mechanisms involved in extracting water from this type of sludge using biological drying technology, with varying rates of ventilation. Especially pertinent was the use of low ventilation rates as control variables. Our results suggest that a scheduled intermittent ventilation at lower rates allows for the most efficient removal of water, achieving a rate of 41.71 % within eight days, according to the zero-order kinetic model. Remarkably, the peak temperature registered was 60 °C, reaching this threshold in just 0.1 days and maintaining high temperatures for approximately 5.9 days. Component analysis of organic matter illustrated a preferential degradation process for lipids under these ventilation conditions which is pivotal for releasing and transforming bound water for efficient extraction, as well as facilitating the breakdown of easily hydrolysable materials. Further, polysaccharide/protein (EPS) decomposition contributed to water removal, though less significantly. The periodic ventilation strategy allowed for the maximum cumulative temperature to be sustained, demonstrating superior efficiency in harnessing bio-generated heat (82.77 % for water evaporation), resulting in dry sludge suitable for self-sustained combustion at relatively low cost ($26.61/t). Highlighted by this study is the considerable potential of energy-efficient ventilation methods in the biological drying treatment of citric acid fermented sludge and similar industrial waste materials. The increasing temperature in the Yellow River Basin has led to a rapid rise in the melting level height, at a rate of 5.98 m yr-1 during the cold season, which further contributes to the transition from snowfall to rainfall patterns. Between 1979 and 2020, there has been a decrease in snowfall in the Yellow River Basin at a rate of -3.03 mm dec-1, while rainfall has been increasing at a rate of 1.00 mm dec-1. Consequently, the snowfall-to-rainfall ratio (SRR) has decreased. Snowfall directly replenishes terrestrial water storage (TWS) in solid form until it melts, while rainfall is rapidly lost through runoff and evaporation, in addition to infiltrating underground or remaining on the surface. Therefore, the decreasing SRR accelerates the depletion of water resources. According to the surface water balance equation, the reduction in precipitation and runoff, along with an increase in evaporation, results in a decrease in TWS during the cold season within the Yellow River Basin. In addition to climate change, human activities, considering the region's dense population and extensive agricultural land, also accelerate the decline of TWS. Notably, irrigation accounts for the largest proportion of water withdrawals in the Yellow River Basin (71.8%) and primarily occurs during the warm season (especially from June to August). Recent developments in tree-ring research offer great potential for reconstructing past climate changes; determining the frequencies of natural hazards; and assessing the availability of freshwater resources over timescales that extend well into the pre-instrumental period. Here, we review the state of dendrochronological research in the Himalaya and outline future directions for tree-ring-based hydrological reconstructions in a region that has a pressing societal need to understand the causes and consequences of past, present and future changes in the hydrological cycle. We used 'tree ring' and 'Himalaya' as keywords to identify scholarly articles from the Web of Science that were published between 1994 and 2022. The resulting 173 publications were separated by their spatial coverage into the western, central and eastern Himalaya, as well as their scientific purpose (e.g. reconstructing growth-climate relationships, temperature, precipitation, streamflow, floods, droughts, etc.). Our analysis shows that dendrochronological research in the Himalaya primarily focused on understanding growth-climate relationships using annual tree-ring widths measurements obtained for coniferous species, and their application in climate reconstructions. Reconstructions of hydrological processes such as streamflows, and extremes such as glacial and landslide lake outburst floods, have received less attention. Recent advances in dendrochronology, including blue intensity (BI), quantitative wood anatomy (QWA), and tree-ring stable isotopes (TRSI) should be combined to improve the resolution and accuracy of hydrological reconstructions in all parts of the Himalaya. Such studies may allow us to better understand the effects of climate change and the Himalayan water resources for its lowland surroundings. Summary: Plant water uptake from the soil is a crucial element of the global hydrological cycle and essential for vegetation drought resilience. Yet, knowledge of how the distribution of water uptake depth (WUD) varies across species, climates, and seasons is scarce relative to our knowledge of aboveground plant functions. With a global literature review, we found that average WUD varied more among biomes than plant functional types (i.e. deciduous/evergreen broadleaves and conifers), illustrating the importance of the hydroclimate, especially precipitation seasonality, on WUD. By combining records of rooting depth with WUD, we observed a consistently deeper maximum rooting depth than WUD with the largest differences in arid regions – indicating that deep taproots act as lifelines while not contributing to the majority of water uptake. The most ubiquitous observation across the literature was that woody plants switch water sources to soil layers with the highest water availability within short timescales. Hence, seasonal shifts to deep soil layers occur across the globe when shallow soils are drying out, allowing continued transpiration and hydraulic safety. While there are still significant gaps in our understanding of WUD, the consistency across global ecosystems allows integration of existing knowledge into the next generation of vegetation process models. SUMMARY: The grapevine industry is of high economic importance in several countries worldwide. Its growing market demand led to an acceleration of the entire production processes, implying increasing use of water resources at the expense of environmental water balance and the hydrological cycle. Furthermore, in recent decades climate change and the consequent expansion of drought have further compromised water availability, making current agricultural systems even more fragile from ecological and economical perspectives. Consequently, farmers' income and welfare are increasingly unpredictable and unstable. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the resilience of vineyards, and of agro‐ecosystems in general, by developing sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices by more rational biological and natural resources use. The PRIMA project PROSIT addresses these challenges by characterizing and harnessing grapevine‐associated microbiota to propose innovative and sustainable agronomic practices. PROSIT aims to determine the efficacy of natural microbiomes transferred from grapevines adapted to arid climate to commonly cultivated grapevine cultivars. In doing so it will test those natural microbiome effects on drought tolerance. This multidisciplinary project will utilize in vitro culture techniques, bioimaging, microbiological tests, metabolomics, metabarcoding and epigenetic analyses. These will be combined to shed light on molecular mechanisms triggered in plants by microbial associations upon water stress. To this end it is hoped that the project will serve as a blueprint not only for studies uncovering the microbiome role in drought stress in a wide range of species, but also for analyzing its effect on a wide range of stresses commonly encountered in modern agricultural systems. Water huff-n-puff is considered to be an available method to exploit unconventional oil reservoirs, which can significantly promote the reservoir pressure and facilitate water–oil exchange under the imbibition effect. To explore the production characteristics and well performance during water huff-n-puff in the Huanjiang oil field that is a tight oil reservoir, field tests were carried out and production characteristics and well performances were investigated. Moreover, reservoir simulation works were conducted to study the various factors that influence the water huff-n-puff performance. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis for various factors was carried out with the tornado diagram method and the importance of different influencing factors was ranked quantitatively. The results demonstrate that water huff-n-puff has great significance to effectively replenish reservoir pressure as well as promote oil production. Field tests demonstrate that the average liquid rate as well as the oil rate of the horizontal wells increased by 5.94 and 1.18 m3/day , respectively. Considering the different oil production characteristics, the oil production process can be classified into three different stages. The levels importance of different influencing factors were ranked as rock wettability, water huff-n-puff cycles, water injection volume, hydraulic fracturing sections, well position, and soaking time. Monitoring snow depth variations aligned with the seasonal cycle is crucial for studies on climate change and its impacts due to global warming. Especially in terms of snow hydrology, the determination and continuous monitoring of snow depth to determine snow water equivalent is a priority in climate, water science, drought, flood, and inundation prediction studies, particularly in the water cycle. Recently, the so-called Global Navigation Satellite Systems – Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS-IR) method enables to extract environmental radiometric and geometric characteristics of surface where the signals transmitted from the satellites reflect. The reflected signal follows an extra path than the direct one and causes a major error source for accurate point positioning but a useful tool for sensing the environment. However, outliers remain a challenge in long-term GNSS-IR estimations. In this study, we proposed a median-based robust outlier detection (ROD) approach for identifying outliers in long-term GNSS-IR snow depth estimations. To validate our approach, we analysed 5-year GNSS L1 SNR and L2 SNR data from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2019 provided by AB33 and AB39 GNSS stations in Alaska, U.S.A. using the GNSS-IR method. We validated GNSS-IR estimations using snow depth measurements from the Coldfoot and Fort Yukon stations in the SNOTEL network. Applying ROD to long-term snow depth estimates increased the highest correlation from 91.58% to 94.93%, and reduced the lowest RMSE from 8.6 cm to 6.7 cm. In addition, the improvement rates calculated to assess the contribution of ROD to the results showed improvements of up to 6.9% in correlation and 26.1% in RMSE. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is a heat engine application that utilizes the Rankine cycle to extract energy from the thermal gradient between surface seawater and deep seawater. Hybrid cycle OTEC (H-OTEC) is a combination of an open cycle desalination system and a closed-cycle power generation system that leverages the features of both cycles. Unlike other desalination technologies that require extensive energy to operate, H-OTEC relies entirely on renewable energy. In addition, a desalination plant can be coupled with the H-OTEC system (H-OTEC + D) to improve its performance. Conventionally, the total heat transfer area of heat exchangers per net power is used as an objective function to achieve optimal performance with the lowest capital expenditure cost. The proposed objective function, unlike the conventional one, considers both power and water. In this study, the optimization of H-OTEC + D and H-OTEC is carried out by minimizing the proposed objective function, considering several independent variables. The performance of both systems is evaluated in terms of the objective function, power consumption, seawater flow rates, and desalination ratio. The findings also indicate the effectiveness of the proposed objective function over the conventional one as an effective tool for maximizing power and desalinated water generation. The nonlinear interactions between river discharge, astronomical tidal wave, and local geomorphology during storm passage or water release from upstream dams can produce severe floods in the Río Negro lower basin (Argentina). For this reason, this paper aims to detect and study nonlinear processes in this area. The watercourse hydrodynamics was described using hourly water level data from three limnigraphs during 2003 – 2021 and flow time series. The tide gauge dataset was employed to describe the influence of tidal cycles on the hydrological regimen. Nonlinear processes' impact on the astronomical tidal cycle and river discharge was analyzed using Harmonic Analysis, and Fourier higher-order spectra, also it was complemented with the selection of two study cases. Harmonic Analysis results showed that the tidal wave entry upstream of the Río Negro modulates its hydrological regime, presenting the water column semidiurnal variations. Also, high-order spectral analysis detected nonlinear interactions in the signal in storm conditions with an energetic redistribution among the linear tidal constituents toward shallow water harmonics. Additionally, nonlinear interactions provoked a delay in the tidal ebb phase with a consequential extension of flooding duration time. The physical behavior of a falling raindrop is governed by delicate fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, and oscillates with time. Despite this time‐variant nature, past observational and simulation studies have aimed to generalize parameterizations for describing rain microphysics bearing the assumption that raindrops fall at terminal speeds with an equilibrium shape. However, the applicability of this hypothesis in a realistic atmosphere that is inherently turbulent remains an open question. Here, we employ novel retrieval techniques to quantify the impact of turbulence on raindrop microphysics using long‐term in situ observations with careful assessment of the wind effect. We find that raindrop microphysics increasingly deviate from the equilibrium state as the turbulence dissipation rate increases, and this effect is more pronounced for large raindrops. We present turbulence‐invoked rain microphysical parameterizations which shed light on the complex interactions between turbulence dynamics and raindrop microphysics. Plain Language Summary: Raindrops are omnipresent in the atmosphere and play an essential role in the global hydrological cycle. The microphysics of raindrops, namely, shape, orientation and fall speed, have long been represented as a function of diameter with an equilibrium state. This simplification omits the impact of ubiquitous turbulence in the atmosphere. This study quantifies the deformation of raindrops under turbulent conditions. We find that the shape of large raindrops is more rounded and that raindrop oscillation is more pronounced in response to strong turbulence. Their fall speeds are significantly lower than the terminal speed, and the corresponding standard deviations are greater. Our work demonstrates the necessity of physically representing turbulence dynamics for accurate parameterization of raindrop microphysics via numerical simulations. Problems of water system integration occur when a model's boundaries are too narrow to capture interactions and feedbacks across the terrestrial water cycle. We propose that integrated water systems models are required to overcome them and are necessary to understand emergent system behaviour, to expand model boundaries, to evaluate interventions, and to ensure simulations reflect stakeholder goals. We present the Water Systems Integrated Modelling framework (WSIMOD) software as one such approach and describe its theoretical basis, covering the node and arc nature of simulations, the integration framework that enables communication between model elements, and the model orchestration to customise interactions. We highlight data requirements for creating such a model and the potential for future development and refinement. WSIMOD offers a flexible and powerful approach to represent water systems, and we hope it will encourage further research and application into using model integration towards achieving sustainable and resilient water management. Photovoltaic (PV)-based power generation systems are becoming increasingly popular as a due to its high performance and cleanliness. Several factors influence the performance of a PV system, including shadowing effects. PV systems employ MPPT methodologies to obtain the power from PV array. Conventional MPPTs works well under normal conditions when there is no shadow effects or partial shading. The presence of partial shading affects the system performance and generates several power peaks. This complicates the process of finding out of the global peak (GMPP) with improved tracking efficiency and reduced settling time including conversion efficiency. This work proposes three hybrid MPPT techniques: Water Cycle Optimisation-Perturb and Observe (WCO-PO), Artificial Neural Network Supported Adaptable Stepped-Scaled Perturb and Observe (ANN-ASSPO), Grey Wolf Optimisation-Modified Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Controller (GWO-MFTSMC), and two conventional MPPT techniques WCO and P&O have been implemented. The proposed system utilizes interleaved boost converter with three phase. The performances of proposed hybrid MPPTs strategies were compared in terms of output voltage, output current and extracted power. The comparison also includes conversion efficiency and average settling time. To analyse the performances, four different cases have been used to test the efficacy of hybrid MPPTs under changing climatic conditions. The MATLAB/Simulink tool has been used to analyze the PV system performances. In the three hybrid MPPT techniques, WCO-PO has performed better when compared to other two hybrid MPPTs in terms of conversion efficiency (99.56%) and settling time (1.4 m). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past decades, the cryosphere has changed significantly in High Mountain Asia (HMA), leading to multiple natural hazards such as rock–ice avalanches, glacier collapse, debris flows, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Monitoring cryosphere change and evaluating its hydrological effects are essential for studying climate change, the hydrological cycle, water resource management, and natural disaster mitigation and prevention. However, knowledge gaps, data uncertainties, and other substantial challenges limit comprehensive research in climate–cryosphere–hydrology–hazard systems. To address this, we provide an up-to-date, comprehensive, multidisciplinary review of remote sensing techniques in cryosphere studies, demonstrating primary methodologies for delineating glaciers and measuring geodetic glacier mass balance change, glacier thickness, glacier motion or ice velocity, snow extent and water equivalent, frozen ground or frozen soil, lake ice, and glacier-related hazards. The principal results and data achievements are summarized, including URL links for available products and related data platforms. We then describe the main challenges for cryosphere monitoring using satellite-based datasets. Among these challenges, the most significant limitations in accurate data inversion from remotely sensed data are attributed to the high uncertainties and inconsistent estimations due to rough terrain, the various techniques employed, data variability across the same regions (e.g., glacier mass balance change, snow depth retrieval, and the active layer thickness of frozen ground), and poor-quality optical images due to cloudy weather. The paucity of ground observations and validations with few long-term, continuous datasets also limits the utilization of satellite-based cryosphere studies and large-scale hydrological models. Lastly, we address potential breakthroughs in future studies, i.e., (1) outlining debris-covered glacier margins explicitly involving glacier areas in rough mountain shadows, (2) developing highly accurate snow depth retrieval methods by establishing a microwave emission model of snowpack in mountainous regions, (3) advancing techniques for subsurface complex freeze–thaw process observations from space, (4) filling knowledge gaps on scattering mechanisms varying with surface features (e.g., lake ice thickness and varying snow features on lake ice), and (5) improving and cross-verifying the data retrieval accuracy by combining different remote sensing techniques and physical models using machine learning methods and assimilation of multiple high-temporal-resolution datasets from multiple platforms. This comprehensive, multidisciplinary review highlights cryospheric studies incorporating spaceborne observations and hydrological models from diversified techniques/methodologies (e.g., multi-spectral optical data with thermal bands, SAR, InSAR, passive microwave, and altimetry), providing a valuable reference for what scientists have achieved in cryosphere change research and its hydrological effects on the Third Pole. In this work, the Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG) coatings prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying were found to have a thermal expansion coefficient of 8.51 × 10-6K-1 from 473 to 1673K and a thermal conductivity of 2.41 W/(m∙K) at 1273K as well as a Young's modulus of 89.4 ± 9 GPa and an average hardness of 6.79 ± 0.24 GPa. Their excellent mechanical and thermal-physical properties have promoted them as thermal/environmental barrier coating (T/EBC) materials. Multi-layered Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /Yb 2 SiO 5 /Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 (YAG/YbMS/YbDS) T/EBCs were deposited on SiC based substrate. Thermal cycling and water vapor corrosion behavior of the YAG/YbMS/YbDS T/EBCs were also investigated. The cyclic oxidation tests at 1573K showed that the coatings had excellent resistance to thermal cycling, with an average lifetime of 442 ± 10 cycles. The initial oxidation of the Si layer at the edge, resulting in the formation of a 4.8 μm thick thermally grown oxide (TGO), coupled with the volumetric changes and the associated phase transformation stress, led to the delamination of the coatings from the edges. Due to the very low oxygen diffusion rate of YAG layer, the thickness of TGO was only 1.2 μm after steam corrosion for 40 h. Concepts regarding the operation of the ascorbate–glutathione cycle and the associated water/water cycle in the processing of metabolically generated hydrogen peroxide and other forms of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are well established in the literature. However, our knowledge of the functions of these cycles and their component enzymes continues to grow and evolve. Recent insights include participation in the intrinsic environmental and developmental signalling pathways that regulate plant growth, development, and defence. In addition to ROS processing, the enzymes of the two cycles not only support the functions of ascorbate and glutathione, they also have 'moonlighting' functions. They are subject to post-translational modifications and have an extensive interactome, particularly with other signalling proteins. In this assessment of current knowledge, we highlight the central position of the ascorbate–glutathione cycle in the network of cellular redox systems that underpin the energy-sensitive communication within the different cellular compartments and integrate plant signalling pathways. The high groundwater salinity of crystalline aquifers in semiarid areas is generally attributed to the dissolution and leaching of meteoric salts that have been progressively evapoconcentrated in the different hydrological compartments under dry climate conditions. A numerical model, simulating water and salt balances, was developed from a case study in Northeast Brazil to: (1) test the validity of this hypothesis, through the quantification of all relevant water cycle processes in the studied watershed, and (2) demonstrate how changes in land cover can impact groundwater salinity. Computations showed that the aridity and the high evapo(transpi)ration rates from the unsaturated zone and/or surface water (ponds, reservoirs) cannot lead to the observed aquifer salinization levels, but only to concentrations of a few tens or hundreds of mg L–1 (Cl–). The only process that can induce a high groundwater salinity, with chloride concentrations up to several g L–1, is the transpiration of groundwater by the deep roots of the vegetation, with a rate reaching 100% of the annual recharge. In this case study, the vegetation involved is the native Caatinga forest. Simulations of the long-term dynamics of groundwater salinity indicate that aquifer areas with high salinity are relicts of the Caatinga pre-colonization period during which subterranean endorheic conditions were prevailing. Following the Caatinga deforestation linked to colonial agricultural development, aquifer recharge increased and endorheism ceased. This paper analyzes the correlation between precipitation and deforestation and trends in the Brazilian Amazon Biome from 1985 to 2021 using rain gauge measurements. A total of 187 stations were selected after filtering time series with less than 10% of missing data. Deforestation data was acquired using the MapBiomas dataset. Results show that deforestation rates vary across different locations and may be influenced by various factors. The analysis also found significant negative correlations between precipitation and deforestation, with a range of − 0.49 to − 0.33, as well as significant positive correlations, with a range of 0.34 to 0.57. These findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring of precipitation patterns in the region and the urgent need for measures to mitigate deforestation, which is critical for the hydrological cycle of the region. The highest deforestation rates and values were found between latitude 0 and − 12.5, where the arc of deforestation lies. Additionally, this study found a significant negative correlation between precipitation patterns and deforestation, indicating that deforestation led to a reduction in rainfall in the region. Based on satellite observation and reanalysis data, basic features of cloud water and precipitation and the dependence of precipitation efficiency (PE) on environmental factors over the Sichuan Basin and adjacent regions are investigated. Results found that the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of precipitation and cloud water over the Sichuan Basin and adjacent regions are consistent. The liquid water path (LWP) and ice water path (IWP) in the Sichuan Basin (SCB) are richer than the West Sichuan Plateau (WSP) and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (YGP), and the contribution of IWP to precipitation in Sichuan Basin and adjacent regions is greater than that of LWP. Furthermore, the results indicate that PE has the most significant dependence on the low-tropospheric relative humidity (RH) and the convective available potential energy (CAPE) over the Sichuan Basin and adjacent regions. Higher RH and CAPE contribute to a larger PE in the Sichuan Basin. The CAPE has a positive effect on the PE, which indicates that PE is directly affected by precipitation convection, mainly due to the special topography of the Sichuan Basin and adjacent regions, leading to frequent convective activities. The ratio of LWP to IWP (RLI) affects PE. The RLI decreases with the increase of IWP, leading to an increase in PE. RLI is negatively correlated with PE, which further indicates that ice water clouds have a more significant impact on PE over the Sichuan Basin and adjacent regions. Through this study, we can enhance our understanding of the formation processes, spatio-temporal structures, and evolutionary mechanisms of cloud precipitation in the Sichuan Basin and its adjacent areas. Water is known to play a crucial role in the generation of many large igneous provinces (LIP) worldwide, but the amount and origin of the water in their sources is still under debate. To address this question, this paper presents in situ major-, trace-element, and Sr isotope data coupled with bulk-mineral O-HHe isotope analyses of amphibole in a suite of aillikites from the Tarim LIP (NW China). The cores of zoned macrocrysts and microcrysts display partially overlapping compositions ranging between edenite and pargasite (75-83 versus 75-80 Mg#), which suggest a common origin from an evolving magma. The rims (Mg# = 75-80) of both macrocrysts and microcrysts are very similar to their cores for many elements, except for higher Sr and Ba contents. All the amphibole zones show similar primitive mantle-normalized trace element patterns, suggesting that they crystallized at different stages during magmatic evolution. This interpretation is confirmed by the homogenous Sr isotope compositions (87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.70298-0.70394) of these amphiboles, which overlap with those of magmatic apatites and perovskites in these aillikites. The hydrogen isotope compositions (-D = -120‰ to -140‰) of the amphiboles are significantly lower than average mantle values. Given the low water contents (<0.66 wt%) of these minerals, the low H iso signatures of the amphiboles might be caused by variable H2O loss during magma ascent. However, open-system Rayleigh fractionation modeling suggests that the hydrogen isotope compositions of these amphibole phenocrysts cannot be fully reproduced by crystallization following magmatic degassing. These low Î'D values require incorporation of recycled altered oceanic crust containing hydrous components in the plume source of these aillikites, which is consistent with the previously published moderately radiogenic He isotope ratios of olivine separates and bulk-rock Os and Pb isotope data for these same samples. In recent years, the frequency and intensity of global extreme weather events have gradually increased, leading to significant changes in urban rainfall patterns. The uneven distribution of rainfall has caused varying degrees of water security issues in different regions. Accurately grasping the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of rainfall is crucial for understanding the hydrological cycle and predicting the availability of water resources. This study collected rainfall data every five minutes from 62 rain gauge stations in the main urban area of Kunming City from 2019 to 2021, constructing an unsupervised hybrid dimensionality reduction-clustering (HDRC) model. The model employs the Locally Linear Embedding (LLE) algorithm from manifold learning for dimensionality reduction of the data samples and uses the dynamic clustering K-Means algorithm for cluster analysis. The results show that the model categorizes the rainfall in the Kunming area into three types: The first type has its rainfall center distributed on the north shore of Dian Lake and the southern part of Kunming's main urban area, with spatial dynamics showing the rainfall distribution gradually developing from the Dian Lake water body towards the land. The second type's rainfall center is located in the northern mountainous area of Kunming, with a smaller spatial dynamic change trend. The water vapor has a relatively fixed and concentrated rainfall center due to the orographic uplift effect of the mountains. The third type's rainfall center is located in the main urban area of Kunming, with this type of rainfall showing smaller variations in all indicators, mainly occurring in May and September when the temperature is lower, related to the urban heat island effect. This research provides a general workflow for spatial rainfall classification, capable of mining the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of regional rainfall based on extensive data and generating typical samples of rainfall types. Knowledge of the quantitative importance of the moisture transport pathways and mutual moisture exchange of the source regions of the Yangtze (SYZR) and Yellow (SYR) rivers' basins, the adjacent origins of China's two longest rivers, can provide insights into the regional atmospheric branch of the hydrological cycle over the source regions. The method with the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model and a Lagrangian moisture source diagnostic to identify the major moisture transport pathways quantifies their importance to two types of daily precipitation events—daily precipitation more than 10 mm (PM) events and daily precipitation less than 10 mm (PL) events—for the two rivers' regions during the summer (June–August, 1986–2015) and finds the characteristics of mutual moisture exchange. The results indicated that both the Bay of Bengal group pathway and the northwest China group pathway play significant roles in PM and PL events over the SYZR, contributing 41.87% and 39.12% to PM events and 41.33% and 33.16% to PL events, respectively. The SYR has five main moisture path groups; the Bay of Bengal group pathway, the northwest China group pathway, and the southeast China group pathway play significant roles in PM and PL events over the SYR, contributing 32.34%, 23.28%, and 34.36% to PM events and 34.84%, 36.18%, and 19.83% to PL events, respectively. The volume of moisture passing from the SYZR to the SYR is approximately 60 times that of the reverse, constituting about 6.9% of the total moisture released in SYR precipitation. It is worth noting that the moisture release was concentrated in the nearer west group pathway, and the main moisture uptake locations were beyond the source region of the two rivers (remote sources) in the PM events. All climate models use parameterizations and tuning in order to be accurate. The different parameterizations and tuning processes are the primary source of difference between models. Because models are tuned with present observations of Earth, they may not accurately simulate climates of other planets or palaeoclimate. A model with no adjustable parameter that happens to fit today's observations is probably more universal and should be more appropriate to model palaeoclimate. However, to our knowledge, such a model does not exist or is yet to be developed. This paper aims to improve a parameter-free radiative–convective model that computes a realistic temperature vertical profile to compute the water cycle, giving a value on average tropical precipitation. Although it is known that the radiative transfer constrains the order of magnitude of precipitation, no parameter-free model has yet been able to compute precipitation. The cement industry is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than international air traffic, it takes up massive amounts of water and energy in the production process and creates highly destructive stone pit mines. The case we are presenting here stands for a complex transnational struggle for environmental justice involving the indigenous Sedelur Sikep community and a subsidiary of the German HeidelbergCement AG linking the Javanese lime stone landscapes of the Kendeng mountains with nodes of decision-making in Jakarta and Germany. The Kendeng mountains on the island of Java are important sites of social and cultural reproduction for the Sedelur Sikep, providing important ecosystem services. The community rejects the market economy and in particular the trading of products they have not produced themselves. Their practices have contributed to the conservation of this biodiversity rich landscapes for centuries. The plans of the HeidelbergCement AG to construct a cement factory raises concerns among the Sedelur Sikep. The group worries that the factory and the stone pit mine alter the hydrological cycle affecting their wet-rice fields and ultimately their lifestyles. Despite protests by Sedelur Sikep and allied conservation and human-rights organizations, the subsidiary of Heidelberg Cement AG hold son to its plans, referring to a completed environmental impact assessment and related permits.Building on the concepts of environmental justice and epistemic justice, we investigate how the Sedelur Sikep, together with conservation and human-rights organizations have (so far) successfully prevented the construction of the cement factory by challenging the procedural aspects of the permit process, stressing their role as indigenous communities and by challenging dominant forms of knowledge production used in environmental impact assessments. We show how successful resistance is organized employing the mainstream nature conservation narrative. We also show that the employment of different knowledge system is part of a strategy, while the groups own understanding of respecting and living with the mountain goes beyond this mainstream narrative. Quantitatively estimating the global mean precipitation (GMP) throughout Earth's history is crucial for enhancing our understanding of long-term climate evolution and the hydrological cycle. However, currently there is no established methodology for estimating global mean paleoprecipitation. Here, we present the first study that estimates GMP in the Phanerozoic era. The relationship between GMP and global mean surface temperature (GMST) is investigated by analyzing data from 23 models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6). The result reveals consistent and significant impact of temperature on precipitation, with a sensitivity range of 2–3 % K−1. Additionally, we propose a method for accessing latitudinal variations in precipitation caused by land area distributions and paleo-Köppen climatic belts. These climatic belts are determined based on geological indicators such as coals, evaporites, and glacial deposits. The GMP is thus quantitatively estimated by combining variations in GMST, land area distributions, and paleo-köppen climatic belts, spanning from 540 Ma to the present day. The quantitative GMP curve demonstrates fluctuations in GMP about 500 mm yr−1, with values ranging from 948 to 1442 mm yr−1 over the Phanerozoic era. This curve aligns closely with findings derived from numerical simulations. Moisture sources and transport processes play a critical part in hydrological cycle and determine regional precipitation. This paper utilizes the Water Accounting Model‐2layers (WAM‐2layers) and the ERA5 reanalysis data to track the sources of precipitation over the Pearl River Basin (PRB). The contribution of external moisture and the role of local recycling are investigated. The results show that during the period from 1980 to 2020, oceanic sources including the western North Pacific and Indian Oceans serve as the primary moisture sources of precipitation over the PRB. The contributions to total seasonal precipitation are respectively 62.57% in MAM, 54.79% in JJA, 43.70% in SON and 60.88% in DJF. By contrast, the contribution of local recycling is generally below 5.50%. In the dry years of 1994, 1997 and 2001, the contribution of terrestrial sources is about 19.22%; in the wet years of 1989, 2009 and 2011, the contribution is about 16.31%. The summer precipitation anomalies are mainly attributable to moisture anomalies from the Equatorial Indian Ocean in the wet years and from Southeast Asia in the dry years. Furthermore, vertically integrated moisture flux anomalies over the boundaries of the PRB are generally the result of anomalous wind rather than anomalous moisture. In the wet years, low‐pressure systems induce strong cyclonic moisture transports, increasing the PRB precipitation. Water vapour is a critical component of the hydrological cycle and plays a key role in climate systems and water resources on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, the effect of water vapour on extreme precipitation during the snow season over the TP, where snow cover is widespread, has not been determined. In this study, we investigated the water vapour contributions from extreme precipitation events during the snow season from 1980 to 2017 in four subregions of the TP using the flexible particle dispersion method. We divided the TP into four regions: the northeastern TP (NETP), northwestern TP (NWTP), southeastern TP (SETP) and southwestern TP (SWTP). The water vapour contributions from extreme precipitation among the four subregions were clearly different. The most important water vapour area that contributed the most water vapour to extreme precipitation over the NETP was from local contributions; nevertheless, Central Asia contributed the most water vapour to the NWTP. Water vapour from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal (ASBB) dominantly controlled extreme precipitation in the SETP at a ratio of 45% and in the SWTP at a ratio of 72.9%. The water vapour contribution from the ASBB was significantly correlated with the extreme precipitation occurring in the TP subregions during the snow season in comparison to that of non‐extreme precipitation. These results could improve the understanding of water vapour cycle differences across the interior TP; additionally, our study provides a theoretical reference for the relationship between the snow distribution and water vapour sources in the TP. While droughts predominantly induce immediate reductions in plant carbon uptake, they can also exert long‐lasting effects on carbon fluxes through associated changes in leaf area, soil carbon, etc. Among other mechanisms, shifts in carbon allocation due to water stress can contribute to the legacy effects of drought on carbon fluxes. However, the magnitude and impact of these allocation shifts on carbon fluxes and pools remain poorly understood. Using data from a wet tropical flux tower site in French Guiana, we demonstrate that drought‐induced carbon allocation shifts can be reliably inferred by assimilating Net Biosphere Exchange (NBE) and other observations within the CARbon DAta MOdel fraMework. This model‐data fusion system allows inference of optimized carbon and water cycle parameters and states from multiple observational data streams. We then examined how these inferred shifts affected the duration and magnitude of drought's impact on NBE during and after the extreme event. Compared to a static allocation scheme analogous to those typically implemented in land surface models, dynamic allocation reduced average carbon uptake during drought recovery by a factor of 2.8. Additionally, the dynamic model extended the average recovery time by 5 months. The inferred allocation shifts influenced the post‐drought period by altering foliage and fine root pools, which in turn modulated gross primary productivity and heterotrophic respiration for up to a decade. These changes can create a bust‐boom cycle where carbon uptake is enhanced some years after a drought, compared to what would have occurred under drought‐free conditions. Overall, allocation shifts accounted for 65% [45%–75%] of drought legacy effects in modeled NBE. This study comparatively evaluates the skill of the (un)coupled Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) – WRF-Hydro system supported with satellite-based soil moisture initiation in long-term simulations of hydrometeorological variables under humid and semi-arid climate conditions. Prior to the coupling, the WRF-Hydro model is calibrated using streamflow data at different data scales (i.e. hourly and daily) to discuss the influences of the changing temporal resolution of the reference dataset on the optimum parameter values. According to the results, fully coupled models correct the location and magnitude of the occurrence of hourly extreme precipitation. Changing the initial soil moisture data source affects the terrestrial water cycle elements in the semi-arid region (i.e. Mediterranean (MED)) more than in the humid area (i.e. Eastern Black Sea (EBS)), especially in spring and summer. This study compares the summer atmospheric water cycle, including moisture sources and consumption, in the upstream, midstream, and downstream regions of the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin in the southern Tibetan Plateau. The evolutions of moisture properties under the influence of the westerly and summer southerly monsoon are examined using 5-yr multi-source measurements and ERA5 reanalysis data. Note that moisture consumption in this study is associated with clouds, precipitation, and diabatic heating. Compared to the midstream and downstream regions, the upstream region has less moisture, clouds, and precipitation, where the moisture is brought by the westerly. In early August, the vertical wet advection over this region becomes enhanced and generates more high clouds and precipitation. The midstream region has moisture carried by the westerly in June and by the southerly monsoon from July to August. The higher vertical wet advection maximum here forms more high clouds, with a precipitation peak in early July. The downstream region is mainly affected by the southerly-driven wet advection. The rich moisture and strong vertical wet advection here produce the most clouds and precipitation among the three regions, with a precipitation peak in late June. The height of the maximum moisture condensation is different between the midstream region (325 hPa) and the other two regions (375 hPa), due to the higher upward motion maximum in the midstream region. The diabatic heating structures show that stratiform clouds dominate the upstream region, stratiform clouds and deep convection co-exist in the midstream region, and deep convection systems characterize the downstream region. FY‐3E plays a vital role in the meteorological global earth observing system. Precipitable water vapor (PWV) is an essential parameter for the water cycle and global climate change. Here, we carry out the PWV retrieval using the MERSI‐LL sensor onboard the FY‐3E satellite for the first time. The retrieval accuracy under different cloudage conditions is validated by the extra PWV from ground‐based GNSS and spaceborne occultation. For the results against ground‐based GNSS, the total accuracy shows an RMSE of 2.69–3.36 mm as the clouds increase, and correlation coefficients higher than 0.95. The spatial accuracy distribution indicates that inland stations have higher accuracy than the coast and island stations. As for the results against spaceborne occultation, the verification accuracy varies with the spatial pairing distance, showing poor accuracy in the low latitude area. This study can provide an essential reference for the community to understand the current water vapor inversion performance of MERSI‐LL. Flash droughts– the rapid drying of land and intensification of drought conditions—have devasting impacts to natural resources, food supplies, and the economy. Less is currently known about the drivers of flash droughts and their impact on landscape carbon losses. We leverage carbon and water cycle data from NASA OCO‐2 and Soil Moisture Active and Passive missions to quantify flash drought impacts on U.S. carbon exchange. On average, pre‐onset carbon uptake fully offsets post‐onset losses, creating a carbon neutral biosphere over a ±3 month period surrounding flash drought onset. This contrasts with ecosystem models, which underestimate pre‐onset uptake and overestimate post‐onset loss. Furthermore, spaceborne observations of solar induced fluorescence (SIF) provide a reliable indicator of flash droughts at lead times of 2–3 months, due to feedbacks between vegetation growth and soil water loss. This study is expected to improve understanding of flash drought impacts on carbon exchange, and facilitate flash drought early warning. This anomalous uptake of carbon in ecosystems is, on average, sufficient to fully offset inevitable decreases in carbon uptake associated with hot dry conditions following onset of flash drought, leading to a net zero impact of flash drought on carbon exchange over the 6‐month period surrounding drought onset. Moreover, we find the satellite observations of solar induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), representing a re‐emission of radiation by plants following absorption of sunlight for growth, are extremely well correlated to soil moisture losses associated with flash drought at lead times of 6–12 weeks across diverse landscapes and ecoregions in North America. Satellite SIF thus shows promise as a reliable early warning indicator of flash drought, at sufficient lead time conducive to decision making. The hydrologic cycle has wide impacts on the ocean salinity and circulation, carbon and nitrogen cycles, and the ecosystem. Under anthropogenic global warming, previous studies showed that the intensification of the hydrologic cycle is a robust feature. Whether this trend persists in hothouse climates, however, is unknown. Here, we show in climate models that mean precipitation first increases with rising surface temperature, but the precipitation trend reverses when the surface is hotter than ~320 to 330 kelvin. This nonmonotonic phenomenon is robust to the cause of warming, convection scheme, ocean dynamics, atmospheric mass, planetary rotation, gravity, and stellar spectrum. The weakening occurs because of the existence of an upper limitation of outgoing longwave emission and the continuously increasing shortwave absorption by H2O and is consistent with atmospheric dynamics featuring the strong increase of atmospheric stratification and marked reduction of convective mass flux. Near‐surface wind speed (NSWS) over China shows multiple time‐scale changes at a centennial scale, but the contributions of internal variability (IV), anthropogenic forcing (ANT), and natural forcing (NAT) to those changes remain unknown. This study investigated the contributions of IV, ANT, and NAT to NSWS changes at a centennial scale. Results show that the NSWS changes were attributed mainly to IV. IV not only modulated the interannual changes in NSWS but also determined the interdecadal transition in NSWS. The relative contributions of IV to the interannual and decadal NSWS exceeded 75.0%. ANT contributed particularly to the long‐term reduction in NSWS; especially, it has contributed 55.0% of the reduction in NSWS since 1957, serving as the major contributor to the reduction in NSWS. NAT had a small‐to‐negligible effect on China's NSWS throughout the study period. This study enhances our understanding of NSWS changes at different time scales. The diurnal variation and distribution of lunar surficial hydration (OH/H2O) is of great significance for understanding the solar wind implantation and water cycle on the Moon. Lunar south pole is an ideal place to study the diurnal variation of surficial hydration due to the large number of repeat observations of the same region, which is very limited in mid‐ or low‐latitudes. Here we showed clear 0.5‐hr interval diurnal variation of surficial hydration at lunar south pole. The variation of hydration band depth with local time is exactly the opposite to the variation of temperature, indicating that lunar surficial hydration changes sufficiently with temperature. This relationship indicates that both the diurnal variation and hydration content are latitude dependent. Our observations support the hypothesis that the diurnal variation of hydration on the Moon is due to the formation of metastable hydroxyl. Long-term, reliable datasets of satellite-based vegetation condition are essential for understanding terrestrial ecosystem responses to global environmental change, particularly in Australia which is characterised by diverse ecosystems and strong interannual climate variability. We comprehensively evaluate several existing global AVHRR NDVI products for their suitability for long-term vegetation monitoring in Australia. Comparisons with MODIS NDVI highlight significant deficiencies, particularly over densely vegetated regions. Moreover, all the assessed products failed to adequately reproduce inter-annual variability in the pre-MODIS era as indicated by Landsat NDVI anomalies. To address these limitations, we propose a new approach to calibrating and harmonising NOAA's Climate Data Record AVHRR NDVI to MODIS MCD43A4 NDVI for Australia using a gradient-boosting decision tree ensemble method. Two versions of the datasets are developed, one incorporating climate data in the predictors ('AusENDVI-clim': Aus tralian E mpirical NDVI-clim ate) and another independent of climate data ('AusENDVI-noclim'). These datasets, spanning 1982–2013 at a spatial resolution of 0.05°, exhibit strong correlation and low relative errors compared to MODIS NDVI, accurately reproducing seasonal cycles over densely vegetated regions. Furthermore, they closely replicate the interannual variability in vegetation condition in the pre-MODIS era. A reliable method for gap-filling the AusENDVI record is also developed that leverages climate, atmospheric CO2 concentration, and woody cover fraction predictors. The resulting synthetic NDVI dataset shows excellent agreement with observations. Finally, we provide a complete 41-year dataset where gap filled AusENDVI from January 1982 to February 2000 is seamlessly joined with MODIS NDVI from March 2000 to December 2022. Analysing 40-year per-pixel trends in Australia's annual maximum NDVI revealed increasing values across most of the continent. Moreover, shifts in the timing of annual peak NDVI are identified, underscoring the dataset's potential to address crucial questions regarding changing vegetation phenology and its drivers. The AusENDVI dataset can be used for studying Australia's changing vegetation dynamics and downstream impacts on terrestrial carbon and water cycles, and provides a reliable foundation for further research into the drivers of vegetation change. Solar energy is the most promising among many renewable energy sources to meet the increasing demand. Photovoltaic (PV) based power generating solutions are expected to gain popularity as a power source for different applications, including independent and grid connected loads, due to their cleanliness, high performance, and high dependability. The efficacy of photovoltaic systems is impacted by several elements, including geographical location, positioning, shadowing effects, and local climate conditions. In order to fulfil the demands of loads, an interleaved boost converter is utilized, which has a reduced number of filters with less stress on the devices. Solar powered systems employ several maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methodologies. However, when there is partial shading, many power peaks arise, which complicates the identification of the overall peak. Although MPPT approaches are designed to measure and maintain the global maximum power point (GMPP), there are still significant oscillations observed around the GMPP with subpar settling time, tracking efficiency, and conversion efficiency. In this work, novel hybrid MPPT technique called artificial neural network supported adaptable stepped-scaled perturb and observe (ANN-ASSPO) method and water cycle optimization based perturb and observe (WCO-PO) have been proposed. Artificial neural network (ANN) has been used to determine the best scaling factor in ANN-ASSPO MPPT. Performance is enhanced in ANN-ASSPO MPPT by using the optimum scaling factor, particularly in situations when the irradiance is rapidly changing/partial shading conditions. Similarly, in WCO-PO MPPT water cycle optimization is used to determine the peak power when the PV panel is subjected to partial shading conditions. The performances of proposed hybrid MPPT ANN-ASSPO and WCO-PO techniques have been compared in terms of power generated, output voltage, average settling time and conversion efficiency. Land evapotranspiration (ET) plays a crucial role in Earth's water–carbon cycle, and accurately estimating global land ET is vital for advancing our understanding of land–atmosphere interactions. Despite the development of numerous ET products in recent decades, widely used products still possess inherent uncertainties arising from using different forcing inputs and imperfect model parameterizations. Furthermore, the lack of sufficient global in situ observations makes direct evaluation of ET products impractical, impeding their utilization and assimilation. Therefore, establishing a reliable global benchmark dataset and exploring evaluation methodologies for ET products is paramount. This study aims to address these challenges by (1) proposing a collocation-based method that considers non-zero error cross-correlation for merging multi-source data and (2) employing this merging method to generate a long-term daily global ET product at resolutions of 0.1° (2000–2020) and 0.25° (1980–2022), incorporating inputs from ERA5L, FluxCom, PMLv2, GLDAS, and GLEAM. The resulting product is the Collocation-Analyzed Multi-source Ensembled Land Evapotranspiration Data (CAMELE). CAMELE exhibits promising performance across various vegetation coverage types, as validated against in situ observations. The evaluation process yielded Pearson correlation coefficients (R) of 0.63 and 0.65, root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) of 0.81 and 0.73 mm d -1 , unbiased root-mean-square errors (ubRMSEs) of 1.20 and 1.04 mm d -1 , mean absolute errors (MAEs) of 0.81 and 0.73 mm d -1 , and Kling–Gupta efficiencies (KGEs) of 0.60 and 0.65 on average at resolutions of 0.1 and 0.25°, respectively. In addition, comparisons indicate that CAMELE can effectively characterize the multiyear linear trend, mean average, and extreme values of ET. However, it exhibits a tendency to overestimate seasonality. In summary, we propose a reliable set of ET data that can aid in understanding the variations in the water cycle and has the potential to serve as a benchmark for various applications. Atmospheric aerosol in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and its surroundings has attracted significant scientific interest in recent decades due to its notable impacts on regional climatic and cryospheric changes, ecological and environmental security, and the hydrological cycle. However, our understanding of the atmospheric aerosol in this remote region is highly limited by the scarcity of available datasets owing to the extremely harsh natural conditions. This challenge has been mitigated in recent decades by establishing field observatories at typical sites within the TP and its surroundings. A continuous project initiated in 2015 aims to explore the properties and sources of atmospheric aerosols, as well as their regional differences, through multiple short-term intensive observations obtained across this vast region utilizing a suite of high-time-resolution online instruments. This paper presents a systematic and hourly scale dataset of aerosol physicochemical and optical properties at eight sites across the TP and its surroundings that is derived from the project. It includes size-resolved chemical compositions of submicron aerosols, high-resolution mass spectra and sources of organic aerosols, size distributions of particle number concentrations, particle light-scattering and light-absorption coefficients, particle light absorptions attributed to different carbonaceous substances including black carbon and brown carbon, and number concentrations of cloud condensation nuclei. In brief, atmospheric aerosols in these remote sites were all well mixed and highly aged, reflecting their dominant regional transport sources. However, the southern TP region exhibited high contributions of carbonaceous organic aerosols, neutralized bulk submicron aerosols, and a relatively high light-absorption capacity, whereas in the northern TP region, secondary inorganic species were the main contributors to the overall acidic submicron aerosols. Beyond providing insights into the regional differences in aerosol sources and properties across the TP and its surroundings, the datasets will also benefit simulations of aerosol radiative forcing and evaluations of interactions among different Earth system components in numerical models for this region. Vegetation phenological shifts impact the terrestrial carbon and water cycle and affect the local climate system through biophysical and biochemical processes. Dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs), serving as pivotal simulation tools for investigating climate impacts on terrestrial ecosystem processes, incorporate representations of vegetation phenological processes. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to achieve an accurate simulation of vegetation phenology in the DGVMs. Here, we developed and implemented spring and autumn phenology algorithms into one of the DGVMs, LPJ-GUESS. The new phenology modules are driven by temperature and photoperiod and are parameterized for deciduous trees and shrubs by using remotely sensed phenological observations and the reanalysis data from ERA5. The results show that the LPJ-GUESS with the new phenology modules substantially improved the accuracy in capturing the start and end dates of growing seasons. For the start of the growing season, the simulated RMSE for deciduous trees and shrubs decreased by 8.04 and 17.34 d, respectively. For the autumn phenology, the simulated RMSE for deciduous trees and shrubs decreased by 22.61 and 17.60 d, respectively. Interestingly, we have also found that differences in the simulated start and end of the growing season also alter the simulated ecological niches and competitive relationships among different plant functional types (PFTs) and subsequentially influence the terrestrial carbon and water cycles. A prominent seismic weakening has suggested the potential presence of H 2 O-bearing complex silicate melts in the Earth's interiors. As boron is typically accompanied by the hydrous fluids and melts and may be transported into deep mantle, boron isotopic evolution enables us to trace the deep-water cycle. The impact of H 2 O on the structures of boron-bearing magmas is essential to grasp the melting processes and the seismic weakening in Earth's mantle. In this study, we report experimental results on the structural changes in volatile-bearing, partially-depolymerized aluminoborosilicate glasses (NaAl 0.5 B 0.5 Si 3 O 8) - an analog for boron-rich rhyolitic melts - with varying H 2 O content and at pressure conditions from 6 to 8 GPa (∼180–240 km depth in the mantle) via multi-nuclear (1H, 17O, 27Al, 11B, 29Si, and 23Na) magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. At isobaric conditions both at 6 GPa and 8 GPa, compared to the coordination environments of anhydrous quenched melts, adding water up to 4 wt% generally promotes the formation of [4]B and systematically suppresses the [5,6]Al fractions; however, in the glasses with 8 wt% water (at 8 GPa), a dramatic increase in both [6]Al and [4]B is observed, while Si coordination number remains unchanged. In contrast, at a constant H 2 O content of 4 wt%, an increase in the pressure from 6 to 8 GPa results in an increase in the [5,6]Al fractions and a decrease in the [4]B fraction. The results highlight complex water-pressure dependences on the cation coordination transformation. Upon adding water content at isobaric condition, boron is more prone to be highly-coordinated over aluminum. In contrast, with increasing pressure at a constant water content, aluminum prefers to be highly-coordinated over boron. These NMR results allow us to refine water dissolution schemes, highlighted by selective network depolymerization of B and Al-bearing bridging oxygens and subsequent annihilation of oxygen triclusters consisting primarily of Al, consistent with a water-driven evolution of B-Al coordination numbers in response to pressurization. These changes induce non-linear decrease in melt viscosity and seismic weakening in the mantle at depths of ∼180–240 km. Observed boron coordination evolutions indicate that deep mantle melts could exhibit complex pressure-water-driven changes in the tendency to enrich 10B. In particular, the effect of 8 wt% water contributes to ∼41 % of the overall reduction of δ11B in deep melts. Finally, as the deep magmatic melts could also be more mafic than those studied here, the water-driven structural changes in more mafic melts with much less boron contents under compression remain to be explored. While the details may vary with melt composition, the current probing of the structures of boron-bearing compressed melts with varying degree of hydration enables better prediction of the deep boron and water cycles.
