Creating a geographic information system (GIS) involves the problem of needing more detail in certain parts of the study area and less detail in other parts. This problem may be handled in the classification, encoding or data structure stages of creating a GIS. The seminar participants worked on this problem primarily in terms of data structure such as triangles, polygon overlay to a variable grid and variable grid by a packed run-length data storage scheme.

This is Volume 9 of a 12 volume report prepared by the Hydrologic Engineering Center as a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' contribution to the International Hydrologic Decade. Procedures used in the analysis of reservoir systems for conservation are discussed. The main emphasis of the volume is upon the construction, formulation and operation of a simulation model used to evaluate the performance of a reservoir system design and operating plan. Topics include identification of the reservoir system, determination of study objectives and criteria, model formulation, model validation, organization and execution of simulation runs, analysis and evaluation of alternative systems. An example illustrating the hydrologic operation of a simplified simulation model is presented for a three reservoir system. The seminar proceedings contain 12 papers presented at a seminar sponsored by The Corps of Engineers on 26-28 March 1974. The papers describe a variety of analytical methods -- computer simulation, optimization, computer graphics, input-output analysis -- and their application to planning studies.

This is Volume 7 of a 12-volume report prepared by The Hydrologic Engineering Center as a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' contribution to the International Hydrological Decade. Basic principles of reservoir operation for flood control are presented and procedures for establishing operational criteria are described. Topics include determination of reservoir release rates, regulation of the reservoir design flood, considerations for determining outlet and spillway regulation, determination of rule curves, and procedures for analyzing multiple-reservoir operation. The applicability of computer simulation for establishing operational criteria is discussed and several computer programs are described in the appendixes. This volume addresses the topics of river morphology, data collection and analysis, reservoir sedimentation, and aggradation and degradation in free-flowing streams. The emphasis of the volume is on practical approaches and techniques for analyzing sediment problems. Application of digital computer simulation for calculating the volume and location of sediment deposits in reservoirs, and for predicting aggradation or degradation trends downstream from dams as well as in free flowing streams, is discussed., Report on United States Contribution to the International Hydrological Decade. In early 1975 the Hydrologic Engineering Center undertook the task of creating technology which would enable the Corps of Engineers to assist local and regional planning agencies to evaluate alternative future land use patterns from a hydrologic, flood damage and environmental view point. The report describes the technology developed and the data flow which enables an expedient and consistant evaluation of specific site proposals or entire alternative future land use patterns. Procedures can be described which can be used to determine the relationship between reservoir storage capacity and reservoir yield analysis are described in detail. The report is part of the 12-volume report entitled 'Hydrologic Engineering Methods for Water Resources Development,' prepared by The Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) as a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' participation in the International Hydrological Decade. This volume relates the mathematical equations for flow in natural channels to the physical process. The most common method for solving these basic equations, the standard step method, is developed for complex cross sections using techniques which are suitable for both hand and computer calculations. One of the objectives of this volume is to delineate the degree of simplification that is appropriate for analysis of water surface profiles in natural channels. The procedures are illustrated by solving an example problem by manual computations; however, the more common practice in the Corps of Engineers is to use electronic computers to calculate water surface profiles. The purpose of the seminar was to provide a forum for sharing experiences and views on such subjects as: (a) case studies of unique applications of the computer for solving hydrologic engineering problems (b) critiques of past use and misuse of computer programs for solving hydrologic engineering problems (c) areas where generalized programs are sorely needed (d) methods for managing input data or for analyzing, summarizing, and presenting results of computer analysis (e) documentation of programs and (f) the role and philosophy of development of generalized computer programs.

This is Volume 4 of the 12 Volume report prepared by The Hydrologic Engineering Center of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a contribution to the International Hydrological Decade. This volume describes practical techniques for analyzing precipitation, snowmelt, infiltration, and runoff processes as they relate to the computation of flood hydrographs. Topics discussed include: Estimation of the areal depth and distribution of precipitation; Calculation of runoff from snowmelt; Determination of loss rates by linear and nonlinear functions; unit hydrograph theory and derivation; hydrograph reconstitution; and the Estimation of unit hydrograph and loss rate coefficients for ungaged areas. Descriptions of generalized computer programs for 'Basin Rainfall and Snowmelt Computations' and 'Unit Hydrograph and Loss Rate Optimatization' are included as appendices. It also illustrates some numerical techniques pertinent to most water quality studies. Water quality surveys and methods of water quality control are also described. The volume is part of a 12-volume report entitled, 'Hydrologic Engineering Methods for Water Resources Development', prepared by The Hydrologic Engineering Center as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' participation in the International Hydrological Decade. Volume 2 describes methods and procedures for managing hydrologic data in a systematic manner, techniques for estimating missing portions of hydrologic records, and techniques for generating synthetic hydrologic data. A generalized computer program description, 'Monthly Streamflow Simulation', is included as part of this volume. This program will analyze monthly hydrologic data at a number of interrelated stations, generate sequences of hypothetical hydrologic data, and reconstitute missing hydrologic data on the basis of concurrent data observed at other locations.
