Ongoing seismic events in global society have increased demands on organizations to change their focus on profit maximization alone to becoming a social enterprise that follows humanistic management (serving the common good) principles. Coincidentally, business schools are under pressure to teach humanistic management principles in their curriculum to enable the future work force to become agents of world benefit. Data analytics offers a means to introduce these principles to undergraduate business students. The analytics module described in this paper introduces undergraduates in an introductory Information Systems course to humanistic management. It discusses the use of humanistic management analytics (HMA), and describes an assignment to design, develop and use a HMA dashboard. Through video, lecture, case study and assignments, students learn the value of incorporating humanistic management principles to analytics and human resource functions that embody concepts of data analytics for social good.

Preparing graduate students for teaching careers in academia can involve myriad approaches. One such approach is facilitating authentic teaching opportunities for graduate students. The purpose of this multiple case study was to chronicle the perspectives of four humanities graduate students as they participated in a mentored teaching experience at a community college. Specific emphases included the evolution of participants' teacher identity and how a mentored teaching experience shaped participants' future career goals. Data sources consisted of semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, journal reflections, and classroom artifacts. Participants identified the fundamental importance of mentor faculty and diverse students as drivers in their own pedagogical development and reflected on the value of interpersonal connections in education. Implications include the need for more pedagogical transparency and discussion in humanities graduate education, as well as the potential of constructing cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations to support graduate students' professional development.

While AI-powered digital platforms are transforming the economy through forms of algorithmic governance that prioritize the automation of work and decision-making, it is critical to ensure that human education remains relevant in the age of machine learning. Unrestricted reliance on artificial intelligence could undermine the entire system of education by allowing machines to replace humans in a multitude of professions, including those that require ethical judgments. This could result in a rapid decline of human agency and create a new class of unemployed workers, a proliferation of unskilled digital labor, and an obsoleteness of education. To avoid this outcome, it is crucial to ensure the rational use of AI and to enable an ethical and sustainable coexistence of humans and advanced technologies, while renewing the raison d'être for human-centered education. This paper proposes to redefine the division of labor between humans and machines and to consider the development of new professions dedicated solely to humans across all economic sectors.

As marginalized graduate students and faculty, we have stories to tell about our experiences within school psychology. Many of these stories center our oppression, trauma, and exclusion but some of them also center our joy and resistance. The purpose of this collaborative autoethnographic project was to create a counterspace in which we, BIWOC faculty and graduate students, could come together to engage in storytelling and build community amongst one another as a way to survive and thrive in academia. As a result of the counterspace, we are able to provide critical feedback and recommendations for school psychology programs to better support marginalized students and faculty. And we also offer critical hope and knowledge to marginalized graduate students and faculty who are currently in the field.

Background: In this paper, we explore the role digital health education can play in physical education. We argue that the use of digital media and technologies has been accompanied by fundamental changes in basic sports pedagogical categories such as body, movement and experience. In doing so, we advance the thesis that increasing digitalisation offers multi-layered and partly paradoxical opportunities and risks for health education, which have not yet been sufficiently discussed from a sports pedagogical perspective in a digitalised world. Objective: To develop a deeper understanding of these changes, we aim to analyse the mechanisms, opportunities and challenges created by digital health education in physical education, with a focus on the use of tools such as wearables. Method: We draw on a Bildung-oriented perspective rooted in German-speaking pedagogy. With this in mind, we first look at the possibilities and limits for digital health education in physical education at the surface level, before we offer a deeper investigation of body, movement and experience in a digitalised world. This leads us to critical reflection at a structural level. Results and Conclusion: Supposedly clear distinctions between 'virtual' and 'real', and 'digital' and 'analogue', are increasingly untenable. On the one hand, the use of digital technologies can convey reductionist images of humankind and a narrow understanding of education. On the other hand, students can experience differences between supposedly objective and subjective views of their bodies and their movement behaviour using digital technologies. This can lead to Bildung processes in which the relationship between oneself and the world is questioned, which in a sense constitutes a form of Bildung-oriented digital health education.

The true spirit of education involves psychosocial grooming and character building of learners. Teacher's efficacy plays a vital role in achieving educational objectives. The effectiveness of teachers is usually evaluated through the academic grades of their students. Teacher's efficacy, however, is originally the ability of a teacher to improve the cognitive functioning and humanistic values of students. The current study developed and validated a new scale entitled the Qualiquant Teacher's Efficacy Scale (QTES) by involving 147 teachers and 59 students. The sample was selected thru a mixed method that involved convenient and purposive sampling techniques. QTES reflected strong validity and excellent reliability thru exploratory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, item-scale, and item-total correlations. QTES is a unique measure for teacher's efficacy because it defines teacher's efficacy through cognitive functioning and humanistic values, offers two parallel and separate versions for teachers and students, and quantifies the qualitative data.

This article is a critique of the current formal education system as a construct for consumerism, where the value of learning is geared towards increasingly limited instrumentalist ends. It considers alternative ways of educating the population to prepare for a century of disruption and upheaval as we transition from an unsustainable fossil fuelbased economy, where competition and acquisition are lauded to a less frenetic, but ultimately more egalitarian reflective future. It argues against the short-term myopia of credentialism, determined by election cycle politics and competitive advantage, and instead posits a humanistic vision for community education and teaching innovation that takes the longue durée regard of the history of human relations into account. Accepting Gellner's exo-socialisation model for mass education in the industrial age, it asks what will replace this in a post-industrial world. Beginning with the principles of widening participation and social inclusion as the starting points for a socially just education, it argues that relationships are central for emancipatory education to take effect. It uses two programmes offered by Maynooth University's Department of Adult and Community Education, the Communiversity and the Critical Skills modules: A Social Analysis of Everyday Life, as examples of programmes that have inclusion, equality and diversity, and social justice as core principles in their modus operandi. Here participation, dialogue, reflection, and a willingness to engage offer hope for an intergenerational lifelong learning approach to education in the twenty-first century that is 'thought led' rather than 'market driven'.

Purpose: This study aims to consider the role of emotions, especially those related to empathy, in promoting a more humane education that enables students to reach out across kinship chasms to promote the development of communities predicated on a shared value on mutual respect. This attention to empathy includes a review of the rational basis for much schooling, introduces skepticism about the façade of rational thinking, reviews the emotionally flat character of classrooms, attends to the emotional dimensions of literacy education, argues on behalf of taking emotions into account in developmental theories and links empathic connections with social justice efforts. The study's main thrust is that empathy is a key emotional quality that does not come naturally or easily to many, yet is important to cultivate if social justice is a goal of education. This paper examines literacy as a sociocultural, personal and human practice dependent on and derived through relationships between people, settings and culture. Drawing on a recent empirical research study that combines learner, teacher and author perspectives [Curtin (2023) "Reading and Writing Pathways Through Children's and Young Adult Literature: Exploring Literacy, Identity and Story with Authors and Readers." Routledge], I explore how children's literature may be used to develop meaningful and authentic literacy pedagogies in the primary classroom. The research methodology for this study employed interviews with sixteen international and award-winning children's literature authors. This paper presents one author's interview from the study in detail in an effort to illustrate the importance of identity and personal resonance in literacy learning. Identity affirming and culturally resonant pedagogies developed seek to engage learners in literacy as a human practice. The paper concludes by considering key insights and ways forward.

We examine the ideal twenty-first century learner as discursively produced in recent future-oriented documents published by the OECD and UNESCO. Drawing inspiration from Bacchi's question 'What is the problem represented to be?', we identify a constellation of interrelated discourses that together craft an image of a post-political, resilient, empathic, bio-perfected, transhuman learner. This learner is conditioned to endure, adapt and adjust to ongoing socio-political conditions and crises, rather than to contest, resist, or alter them. We argue that this portrayal is reflective of a deepening ideological alignment between the OECD and UNESCO -- organisations that have traditionally held divergent views on the purpose and value of education. We conclude by advocating for the reinvigoration of subjectivities that prioritise political agency, defined as the capacity to act upon and transform the existing social order and power structures.

Understanding the nature of science is conducive to establishing a correct view of science and understanding the connotation of science education and the nature of scientific inquiry. This study aims to contextualize the philosophy of science education from China's perspective. The value, goal, and content of science humanistic education, experience in China's science education, and regionalization for promoting the development of science education in schools have been explored in this study. In addition, both the challenges facing science education and countermeasures of science education have also been offered in the last.

This paper analyses the development of UNESCO's Mahatma Gandhi Institute on Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP), examining its record from global, national and institutional perspectives. The global perspective encompasses challenges to UNESCO's attempts to articulate a distinctive, humanistic vision in competition with other multilateral bodies. The national perspective relates to India, which hosts MGIEP, provides the bulk of its funding and exerts significant influence over its governance. Consideration is also given to the relationship between MGIEP's work and Mahatma Gandhi's ideas. Finally, the institutional perspective relates both to the author's own experience with MGIEP, and to information gained through interviews with others involved with the institute. It is argued that MGIEP's story illuminates challenges to attempts, within India and internationally, to sustain a humanistic vision of education in the face of powerful countervailing interests.

This article creates a conversation surrounding teacher education and the ongoing need to relearn, reeducate, and understand social hierarchies in the classroom. Drawing on the concepts of culturally relevant pedagogy and critical Whiteness, this article discusses the pedagogical biases that exist for White teachers working with communities of color and suggests ways teachers can reflect to (a) adopt equity mindsets through examining their own teaching pedagogies, (b) realize and understand the hierarchies of their classroom, and (c) build in time for student leadership and acknowledge student knowledge.

When the current generation of K-12 learners has the opportunity to improve global issues and quality of life, they are inspired to advocate for worthy and ethical causes. Thus, we consider moving beyond the perspective of STE(A)M education from a workforce and global economic focus towards empathy-oriented STE(A)M learning as a humanistic pursuit to generating equitable solutions. This position paper leverages the Design Thinking framework as a theoretical grounding in advocating for the use of empathy as a key intellectual component to learning within integrated K-12 STE(A)M instruction. The purpose of this position paper is to (1) provide an overview of the Design Thinking Framework and discuss how it centres empathy in STE(A)M instruction; (2) share existing literature on the use of empathy in STE(A)M education; (3) theorize and synthesize how the intentional incorporation of empathy in STE(A)M instruction might address needs in well-known STE(A)M instructional methods; and (4) propose and discuss future steps for integrating empathy into the field of STE(A)M education that can benefit K-12 students, particularly those historically excluded in STE(A)M.

This article connects instrumental, emancipatory, and critical approaches to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with the different cultural responses or grand narratives of the Anthropocene: eco-modernist, eco-catastrophist, and eco-socialist. The tensions between these different approaches are explained by ESD's reliance on the ideals of citizenship and the global, which are also at the heart of the Global Citizenship Education (GCE) curriculum. It is argued that the Anthropocene puts into question both ideals, by forcing us to recognise that humans and nonhumans are denizens with limited rights and expanded obligations, all interconnected with each other through the multiple and complex relations of living-together or cohabitation. In this context, ESD needs to move beyond the humanist and liberal ideal of education as a way to form active and engaged citizens able to deal with the global environmental crisis and pursue instead a posthumanist curriculum for Anthropocene Denizenship Education. This proposal aims to overcome anthropocentric pedagogies and encourage learners to develop an embodied, affective, experienced, relational sense of becoming-together with other co-inhabitants of the Earth by cultivating vulner-abilities, attend-abilities, and response-abilities.

With a challenge to conceptualize an environmental/sustainability education that employs imaginaries and praxis for learning our way through and beyond our planetary crisis, we consider how posthuman creativity articulates into pedagogical practice. We share insights from our researcher/practitioner experience in two different educational settings, theorizing creative/learning ecologies with posthuman insights from Karen Barad and Dan Harris. Our two "learning ecologies" are located within: a preschool in Western Sydney; and a girls' school in the Himalayan mountains of Uttarakhand. These learning ecologies intra-act to create agentic pedagogies, equipping children to care-take themselves and their worlds, affected as they are by the ecological distortions inherent in the Capitalocene. The pedagogies, characterized as "a pedagogy of hope" and as "a pedagogy of love and responsibility" respectively, enable students to meet and respond to the world in ways which reclaim human/nature agency.

This paper examines the learning and performance of the air traffic control (ATC) work domain. This domain was chosen because it embodies features that represent future work for many other industries (e.g., information service provision mediated by information technologies; a high reliance on communication skills and collaborative work; increasing complexity and intensity of the work activity), within an organisational context undergoing considerable change. In ATC work learning occurs formally as part of accredited training and informally, as part of everyday practice. In this way learning and experience of ATC work shapes - and is shaped by - the way work is organised, which includes the divisions of labour and technological artefacts. ATC work is experienced temporally, complexly, through affect and socially. Controllers learn to use a variety of socio-material resources which include embodiment and artefacts to undertake the work. In so doing the article demonstrates the ways in which learning and performance is not just a cognitive undertaking, but one that draws on embodiment to achieve what here is called "interdependent sentience". This involves using all their senses to gain an awareness of problems as they emerge to collectively accomplish a seamless air traffic flow in a complex interdependent socio-technical system.

Purpose: Arts-integration is a promising approach to building students' abilities to create and critique arguments with data, also known as informal inferential reasoning (IIR). However, differences in disciplinary practices and routines, as well as school organization and culture, can pose barriers to subject integration. The purpose of this study is to describe synergies and tensions between data science and the arts, and how these can create or constrain opportunities for learners to engage in IIR. Design/methodology/approach: The authors co-designed and implemented four arts-integrated data literacy units with 10 teachers of arts and mathematics in middle school classrooms from four different schools in the USA. The data include student-generated artwork and their written rationales, and interviews with teachers and students. Through maximum variation sampling, the authors identified examples from the data to illustrate disciplinary synergies and tensions that appeared to support different IIR processes among students. Findings: Aspects of artistic representation, including embodiment, narrative and visual image; and aspects of the culture of arts, including an emphasis on personal experience, the acknowledgement of subjectivity and considerations for the audience's perspective, created synergies and tensions that both offered and hindered opportunities for IIR (i.e. going beyond data, using data as evidence and expressing uncertainty). Originality/value: This study answers calls for humanistic approaches to data literacy education. It contributes an interdisciplinary perspective on data literacy that complements other context-oriented perspectives on data science. This study also offers recommendations for how designers and educators can capitalize on synergies and mitigate tensions between domains to promote successful IIR in arts-integrated data literacy education.

White hegemony is pervasive in and through music education, demanding that teachers and scholars take deliberate social and political actions in order to address racial injustice. Such actions are often built upon propositional knowledge or knowledge that can be evaluated by conceptual reason and verified as true or false (Perry and Shotwell 2009; Shotwell 2011). The purpose of this philosophical inquiry is two-fold: to problematize the prioritization of propositional knowledge when engaging in antiracist efforts and to suggest the need for more holistic accounts of antiracism that combine propositional knowledge with affective understandings. I argue that solely propositional approaches can foster disingenuous antiracism rather than substantive action and dialogue. Poet Audre Lorde emphasized the importance of synthesized understandings, and poetry and literary works such as Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" engage with both propositional concepts and affective experiences, which can lead to deeper understandings for the reader. I suggest that synthesized understandings are also possible in music education. Using preparing for a performance of Joel Thompson's choral work "Seven Last Words of the Unarmed" as an example, I offer sharing multiple narratives, recognizing the importance of affect, and taking actions based on synthesized understandings as considerations for antiracist pedagogy. These considerations may encourage the affective depth characteristic of substantive antiracism.

This paper poses the question 'What can we learn from the person-centred counselling literature which could be used by the action learning facilitator to help benefit the set?'. This question may be particularly important to facilitators seeking new ways to run their sets and to facilitators who would like to introduce a more humanistic and less mechanistic way of working with set members. Person-centred counselling is an approach to helping which aims to foster human growth and wellbeing. The person-centred approach was developed by Carl Rogers in the 1950s and has a number of similarities with Revan's original ideas. Although Revans was insistent that action learning was not counselling there are several facets of person-centred theory which align with Revans underlying ideas and philosophy. The paper concludes with suggestions of how to incorporate Rogerian ideas into facilitation, namely those of empathy, congruence and Unconditional Positive Regard.

Theoretical studies and perspectives have argued that humanities positively influence art and design learning performance, yet little study has tested this argument empirically. Further than testing the impact of humanities on art and design learning performance, the present study explores how humanities influence art and design learning performance. The present study investigates the influence of humanistic knowledge (e.g., history and literature) and skills, capabilities (e.g., innovation and narrative) and spirits on art and design learning performance (e.g., professional course marks) empirically via a survey. The moderations of age and gender are also tested. The results showed that humanistic knowledge and skills and humanistic spirits increase the art and design learning performance of visual communication and industrial design students, respectively. Humanistic capabilities increase art and design learning performance for all subjects. Besides, we found the individual difference that the effects of humanistic capabilities and humanistic spirits are stronger in male visual communication students than in female visual communication students. The pedagogical strategy of humanistic education for improving art and design learning is discussed based on the results.

How do we dwell tenderly in the ruins of the modern university? This paper engages a hopeful, collaborative, and sensory methodology to imagine possibilities for research and researcher. As academic women navigating the decay of the neoliberal university amid the shadowy spectre of the 'ideal' academic, we explore our lived experiences, identities, and questions. For us, managing modernity's disorientation and dislocation means showing up differently, with new tools, new theoretical frames, and new ways of relating. From our experiential and aesthetic inquiry, tendrils of possibility for what research does, has been, is, and could be, are emerging. Our dwelling together (co-sensing in radical tenderness) helps us see beyond the thicket of institutional requirements towards a more hopeful and collective existence -- for if the sense of separation instilled by modernity is a social disease, healing must be a communal endeavour.

Friedrich Froebel is often positioned in contemporary landscapes of early childhood education as a 'pioneer', strongly associated with an emphasis on self-directed activity and learning through nature. While Froebel's philosophy has clearly had an impact on how we think about young children today, in this article we argue that we need to re-imagine what counts as Froebel's influence so that it goes well beyond the sayings and doings of one individual. In line with this special issue, we seek to bewilder the concept of the pioneer by instead re-imagining Froebel's influence as a dynamic and ever-changing web of encounter. In conceptualising this web of encounter, we think with Karen Barad's 'entangled genealogies' and introduce into working with these genealogies, the historical methods of prosopography and material histories of the book. Using digitised extracts from late 19th century texts by or about Froebel as a starting point, we attempt to present small parts of a web of encounter drawing in complex national, cultural, economic and material contexts, along with the contributions of multiple individuals, many of whom have been forgotten or side-lined. We argue that exploring and documenting Froebel's influence in this way can support critical and lively reflection on the past, present and future of early childhood education.

We are in a particular moment in human history when climate change and environmental degradation, and the accompanying "eco-anxiety" many of us feel, are challenging predominant ways of living and educating. Just as educational developers have started turning a critical lens inward around other important social justice issues, we all have the opportunity, and indeed a responsibility, to examine the ways that our field may be contributing - albeit inadvertently - to much broader environmental injustices. In this article, we take as our starting point an influential taxonomy of learning, offered by L. Dee Fink, which is frequently utilized in U.S. centers for teaching and learning to guide faculty in the design of their courses. Our purpose is to explore the implications and potential growth areas of one particular area of Fink's learning taxonomy, what he has called the "Human Dimension," and then to propose an expanded understanding and application of this dimension to include attention to and relationships with the more-than-human world, which Indigenous peoples have long practiced. We hope, ultimately, for this piece to provoke critical reflection of an anthropocentric approach to education, inspire a broader ecological perspective-taking, and perhaps even result in concrete environmental actions.

Through a Foucauldian theoretical framework, this article contests the efficacy of the modern assessable and visible learning curriculum, and analyses how the current education episteme disempowers the ethical subjectification of the individual, dislocating the development of aesthetic agency. It articulates a tension between education for the development and enrichment of specific skills and economic growth, which is data-driven, and a more humane, values-driven education. As the vociferous application of, and focus on, standardised tests dominates pedagogical practice and only certain types of empirical knowledge become the accepted norm, then aesthetic agency is subverted. Such data-gazing practices, it is argued, neglect the Foucauldian psychagogical 'care of the self' of students through the cultivation of a life practice; instead, as data surveillance pervasively dominates recent pedagogical rationales, students are further alienated from ethical practices of self that lead to an ethically democratic society. Focusing on the Foucauldian concepts of discipline, biopolitics, and biopower, and the way these concepts shape educational practice, some of the studied blindness and lacunae dissimulated in the excitement of measuring the "effectiveness" of education is analysed.

In a difficult post-pandemic world, far too many students report feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. In response to this mental health crisis, educators increasingly emphasize affective or social and emotional learning. Mindfulness practices, implemented in and outside of the classroom, are potentially valuable affective learning tools.

The purpose of this study is to determine the values and approach of humanistic education management implementation at an elementary school in order to character education strengthening (CES). The research conducted at the Sang Timur Catholic Elementary School, Batu City, that implemented value of "Kesangtimuran" as based on humanistic education management. This study uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological techniques. The research data was collected by means of in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and narrative photos. Checking the validity of the data with triangulation method. The results of the study show that a humanistic education management approach based on "Kesangtimuran" value, by management step and carrying out innovative activities for: teachers, students, and parents, makes school members experience character enhancement, which has an impact on strengthening students' character.

Early childhood education builds the foundation for students' academic careers, but perhaps more importantly emphasizes developmentally appropriate practices that encourage social and emotional learning and prosocial behaviors. Similarly, humane education addresses students' capacity for empathy, compassion, and perspective-taking through connecting the needs of humans, animals, and the environment. This paper describes the development of an emerging framework for humane education grounded in and evolving from Freire's critical pedagogy and its alignment with Hirschi's social control theory that sets the conditions for a humane classroom. Highlighting prosocial interactions and social cohesion, this article proposes logical outcomes and measures to move students from an anthropomorphic perspective to an ecocentric one where learners understand their role in this world and their ability to act within it. The result is a roadmap for teaching and learning that connects animal, planetary, and human needs within the crucial timeframe of early childhood development.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the online delivery of an affective curriculum for gifted and talented youth to gain further understanding of its effectiveness and perceived advantages and disadvantages of delivering affective curriculum online. Using convergent parallel mixed-methods design, we evaluated data from 38 secondary education students and 4 camp counselors to examine their experiences with the online delivery of an affective curriculum. We found the curriculum effectively increased students' self-perceptions, planning, and self-monitoring. Further, camp counselors generally perceived the online delivery to be effective and identified several benefits of online delivery, such as increased access and easier differentiating. Yet, they continued to prefer a face-to-face delivery where possible. Implications for practice are discussed.

In China, the main goal of basic education curriculum reform is to develop students' key competencies. The physics teaching directed by key competencies would not only aim at the memory and reappearance of physics knowledge but also the application of physics knowledge and methods. As teachers who guide students' learning and implement teaching activities, the improvement and development of their key competencies plays an important role in the development of students. The key competencies of physics teachers consist of physics literacy, education and teaching literacy, scientific literacy, humanistic literacy, information literacy, and life-long learning ability.

This article addresses the theoretical perspective to practice of humanism-based instructional strategies in inclusive education schools. Recommendations are offered for both special education and general classroom teachers considering humanism-based instructional strategies in inclusive education schools.

This article establishes a rational, feasible, and necessary conclusion to reform high school science content into an equitable experience for its wide diversity of students' self-identities. Research indicates that 85% of graduates would not normally have enrolled in any science course unless required. Their values are more aligned with their everyday world and/or the world of the humanities, to varying degrees. The 15% had already fulfilled their science prerequisite for postsecondary science-related programs, to varying degrees. The article's conclusion rests mainly on historical and economic evidence, respectively: (1) The Sputnik crisis that instilled public fear and anxiety about the perceived technological gap between the United States and Soviet Union. This led to reforming high school science and implementing National Aeronautics and Space Administration. (2) The on-growing climate-change crisis for which the smart international money is increasingly investing in sustainable businesses and industries, which catalyze a shift in public values from the current "profit society" to a "sustainable society." The article's rationale connects the two historical events. Over the past 30 years, the nature of normal science has evolved into post-normal science. Today the public square also includes: (a) an international assessment project that receives a negative validity audit in this article; (b) a vocal small minority within the 85%, proud of their antiscience self-identities and their leaders' hostile behavior (a problem to ameliorate by a reformed sustainable science education); and (c) instances of small-scale, suitable reform examples developed over the last 70 years, often referred to as humanistic school science.

Over the past several decades, writing center scholarship has evolved to include multiple theories and pedagogies that led to widely used best practices. As is the case in many disciplines, often writing centers at large, research PWIs are most often cited and highlighted within the scholarship. While many of those readings do offer helpful strategies for working with students at all levels, often they do not account for the unique contexts and diverse student populations that make up many HBCUs. As a result, more research from a variety of writing centers is needed so practitioners see there are multiple ways to operate a successful center and facilitate effective sessions. These authors begin by describing their student population and the HBCU learning environment. They then articulate three specific strategies, many of which directly oppose current mainstream practices, implemented in their writing center that influenced their policies and procedures. Lastly, they explore larger implications for these findings, for they believe aspects of these practices, all with traditions deeply rooted in the often-undervalued affective components of literacy instruction at HBCUs, will advance ideas in the field and ultimately be helpful for staff and students in all writing center contexts.

Steve Cochrane argues for the need of young people who practice the principles of humane education, and why those principles need to be central to the work of schools worldwide. The priniciples of humane are: (1) Caring about the problems affecting people, animals, and the natural world; (2) thinking critically about the root and systemic causes of those problems and their impacts; and (3) collaborating with others to find solutions that do the greatest good for people, other species, and the ecosystems that sustain life. In this article, he introduces the Solutionary Framework as a way of bringing together the instructional approaches educators already know produce the highest levels of understanding and engagement for students. These approaches, often grouped under the umbrella of project-based learning (PBL), include personal choice, interdisciplinary instruction, authentic assessment, collaboration, and critical thinking. As students identify real problems in their local communities and around the world, the Solutionary Framework guides them to use systems thinking to explore how multiple social, economic, and environmental systems may affect one another. In addition, the Solutionary Framework fosters students' ethical thinking.

In college, reluctant help seeking is one of the challenges that students from foster care face. Avoidant help seeking is a unique risk factor that conventional support systems on college campuses often fail to adequately address. Humanistic coaching has recently been utilized by some universities as a successful alternative to typical student service strategies to address the needs of students from foster care. In this study, perspectives from four coaches and five students who were involved in a campus-based coaching program were analyzed to determine how they perceived help-seeking beliefs and behaviors. Using a hybrid thematic analysis approach, the authors found that humanistic coaching provided an opportunity to develop a transformational relationship between the coaches and the students. This relationship was perceived by both students and coaches as shifting students' avoidant help-seeking beliefs and behaviors to adaptive help-seeking beliefs and behaviors. The transformative relationship promoted the students' self-determination by creating a sense of relatedness, autonomy, and competency.

This article examines how global institutions contribute to educational change by analyzing the role of Education for All (EFA) in the recent rise of a global field dedicated to education in emergencies (EiE). I build on new sociological insights to argue that global institutions like EFA, commonly critiqued as ineffectual or mere vehicles for powerful interests, can nonetheless provide cultural ingredients and work spaces for the construction of new agendas. I draw on documentary evidence to suggest that the EFA framing of education as a human right provided a powerful cultural frame justifying EiE as an area of need, and that EFA work spaces helped consolidate and legitimate key EiE initiatives and activists, especially early on. The article expands our understanding of how global institutions shape educational change and adds to existing analyses of the rise of EiE as a new global field of intervention.

Mindfulness, which originated in the Buddhist tradition, has become popular in the West and has been integrated into schools. During this migration from a particular-traditional-religious context into a universal-modern-secular one, mindfulness has shed key ethical values and became a "science of happiness." In addition, in the West it has taken on diverse interpretations, such that the original concept has become unclear. Thus, it is important to understand mindfulness in its original form before its implementation in schools. The gap between West and East can be bridged by incorporating important elements from traditional Buddhism--meditation, wisdom, and moral virtues, into Western mindfulness. Humanistic education already has similar elements incorporated into it and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs have the potential to be the practical tool through which this holistic concept of mindfulness may be applied. In this manner, mindfulness in schools will be even more compatible with educational goals.

Background: This article explores the methodological foundations for a utopian methodology as a form of Design-Based Intervention Research (DBR) that can guide the process of envisioning, implementing, sustaining, and critically evaluating the more radical forms of educational activity systems that prefigure the utopian goal of an equitable and humane education system. Methods: We examine, guided by a utopian methodology lens, the examples from three national traditions for designing and implementing equitable educational activities. Each illuminates critical phases in the process of conducting DBR, combining social theory and cultural-historical activity theory. Findings: We propose methodological principles for a utopian methodology as a form of DBR: (a) Some conditions for sustaining and re-generating the utopian goal should be explicitly considered; (b) Examine the recurring challenges to viability and achievability of the utopian design in its learning ecology that emerge for observation over multiple times scales; (c) Self-critique and collaborative re-design for a new iteration. Contribution: Taken as an ensemble, the cases analyzed here illustrate the broad usefulness of the utopian methodology that we propose in order to maintain the light of the utopian goal and challenge domestication process embedded in any process of change and transformation of the status quo.

Utilizing elements of organizational socialization and teacher appraisals, emotions, and labor, the purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which one teacher navigated the process of incorporating the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility model. A qualitative case study approach was applied with one teacher participant, Caroline. Caroline was using the model for the first time with children in first through third grade. Data collection included critical incident reports, semistructured interviews, informal interviews, and a practitioner journal. The two themes that were developed were: (a) model development and (b) emotional appraisals and labor. Caroline struggled with the model initially but improved with practice and the use of resources and advice. She faced setbacks due to philosophical differences and marginalization of her subject, and was able to address and process her emotions through the model.

Knowledge of human anatomy is vital for nurses. Medical educators use a variety of educational pedagogies, including the use of cadavers, to cultivate nursing students into competent and professional care providers and to help them gain authentic experience and knowledge before entering the workplace. Studies have provided numerous examples of students with positive learning experiences in human-centric (humanistic) anatomy courses; however, whether these positive experiences translate into effective clinical practice remains largely unknown. This study explored nurses' perspectives on the effects of a humanistic anatomy program on their nursing practice. Focus groups with semi-structured interview guidelines were conducted to collect data. Twenty-one nurses working in hospitals in Taiwan participated and divided themselves into four groups on the basis of willingness to participate and availability. The interviews were recorded using smartphones, and the recordings were transcribed using a computer. The transcriptions were then checked word by word artificially and analyzed by hand. Three main themes emerged during the analysis: adapting to the professional journey, managing time when providing humanistic care, and cultivating professionalism. The results demonstrate educators' expectations that humanistic anatomy education for nursing students expands students' professional knowledge and helps them develop humanistic competencies as professional nurses.

Scientific research on mobile learning and its implications on humanistic education has grown tremendously. Within the context of an overview of its forerunners (i.e. educational technology) and critical characteristics concerning the humanistic perspective in education, bibliometric findings on mobile learning publications in humanistic education are explained. Between 2000 and 2021, the phrase mobile learning was given attention in education databases through bibliometric analysis of 766 peer-reviewed works on mobile learning in humanistic education. This study takes a novel analytical approach, classifying the most significant authors, publications, and journals into seven theme clusters: pedagogy, learning approach, learning tools, support, real-time learning, technology acceptance, and self-directed learning. This bibliometric analysis uses four metrics: citation analysis, co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling, and co-occurrences of keywords. The most significant contributions are addressed in each cluster. Current knowledge gaps, promising future research fields, and directions are discussed.

The research reported in this paper explored links between the work of Carl Rogers on person-centered education and the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, which posits a model of supports for social collaborative learning. Findings suggest significant links between the Rogerian constructs of level of regard and empathy and the CoI concept of teaching presence. The findings suggest avenues for future research and practical ways for enhancing teaching presence in online courses.

This research aims to reveal the pattern of the multiculturalism-based civics education at higher education institutions in Surakarta, Indonesia. It applied the descriptive qualitative method with the dual case study approach, conducted at State University of Sebelas Maret and Slamet Riyadi University in Surakarta. The data were collected through observation and interviews to find the answers to the research questions in the field. The data were analysed using the interactive technique, consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result shows that the teaching of multiculturalism-based civics education at State University of Sebelas Maret and Slamet Riyadi University has almost the same pattern, that is media-assisted teaching pattern and is always conducted by considering the material integration dimension, knowledge construction dimension, prejudice minimization dimension, equal rights to education dimension, and the dimension of school culture empowerment and social structure from the planning stage to teaching implementation and evaluation stages. The research findings suggest that the students of universities in Surakarta should be able to implement the goal of the teaching of civics education in universities, and the lecturers should always improve the materials, content, method, and strategies of the teaching of multiculturalism-based civics education.

The rich mosaic of U.S. demographics contains multiple languages, cultures, and belief systems. Yet, the historical legacy of an old, white supremacist "master narrative" continues to dominate our political, social, and educational systems. The authors of this paper are educators who teach in either K-12 classrooms or at the university level in the graduate education of counselors, teachers, and school administrators. As educators, we recognize that the old master narrative generates discord by emphasizing history that promotes the position and status of one group over another, which is antithetical in a democracy that is supposed to value all. Therefore, the authors challenge the biased and obsolete racist narrative that perpetuates cultural, psychological, educational, and sociological impairment. In addressing the embedded tenets of white supremacy, this article serves several purposes. First, the authors emphasize the need to re-frame how students are educated in both elementary schools and in higher education, urging the adoption of a humanist narrative that includes stories of Euro-Americans from the historical record who resisted white supremacy. It also offers recommendations for eradicating white supremacy across multiple contexts, including implications for the workplace. Further, it provides examples of how this alternative approach promotes positive integration of white Euro-Americans into the greater populace, leading to a more inclusive society.

Humanitarian events are increasing globally, both in number and intensity. In response, the international community spends approximately US $30 billion annually to alleviate both the immediate consequences of these climatic, geographic, and human-induced events but also to support mitigation and recovery. Over the past two decades, the humanitarian sector has increasingly professionalised. One under-studied aspect of this professionalisation is an increase in postgraduate studies in humanitarian action over the last 20 years. Despite this increase, there is no agreement on core curriculum or pedagogy across humanitarian studies courses. How do current Masters of Humanitarian Assistance (MHA) offerings converge and differ, and how can such courses further their contribution to the humanitarian endeavour? This paper surveys 26 anglophone courses offered in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, and Nigeria, exploring key characteristics of course entry requirements, flexibility, research, practical components, and academic foci. It does not recommend what a core curriculum for humanitarian courses should be, but does argue that core curriculum for humanitarian courses should be identified by relevant and diverse stakeholders such as affected communities, humanitarian agencies, disaster management bodies, and governments, to ensure that courses in this field provide appropriate learning outcomes. The paper suggests how such a 'charter' may be developed.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of employing infographics in higher education, specifically with regard to students' interactions and their perception of the meaning of transferred information. This evaluation was presented through lectures at Applied Sciences Private University in Jordan and two other selected colleges (one scientific and the other humanistic) to compare the two variables applied in this study. To achieve this object infographic materials were developed by researcher and guided by (ASSURE) instructional model to present the lectures to the two experimental groups by infographic method through two selected courses from Information Technology College and Business College. Meanwhile, two control groups were taking the same courses in deferent class by conventional method. In addition, the total of participants was (138 students) and that includes all students of the experimental and control groups. Furthermore, a post-test questionnaire was involved to experimental groups to measure their interaction and perception after presenting lectures by infographic materials. The findings of this study show that infographics have a positive and strong impact on students' interaction and perception. Furthermore, a comparison shows that the students of the scientific and humanistic colleges had different effect of interaction. However, infographics have a similar effect on perception in both colleges.

F. W. Parker (1837-1902), an American educationist, implemented various reforms in education. Parker had a considerable role in the development of progressive education in the United States. Parker is usually regarded as the father of progressive education. Using theoretical analysis, this article aims to explore the notions regarding child education advanced by Parker. First, his ideas of child education were as follows: (1) a unitary child made of body, mind, and spirit is a whole being; (2) education professionals depend on the touch of educational love; (3) teachers are mentors in the search for truths instead of dominators; (4) cultivate a democratic and cooperative attitude in the child; (5) the purpose of humanistic education is to assist the individual development of each child. Second, the learning content proposed for children was as follows: (1) the theory of concentration, (2) teachers should select courses that are familiar to the child, (3) teachers should let the child learn to release energy in a natural environment, (4) adapting subject matter to the child, and (5) assimilating music and story into children's learning content. Finally, the suggested teaching priorities were as follows: (1) arouse learning interest of the child; (2) develop the child's attention; (3) allow expression; (4) handwork; and (5) when the child reads, teachers should lead their thinking.

This article offers a retrospective synopsis of 70 years of development of a humanistic approach to science education. Instruction using the history of science, for example, provides a rich context for students to learn not only canonical science content on a need-to-know basis, but also content from the other domains of humanistic science education, including: the nature of science and scientists, cultural studies, and the multifarious interplay between science/scientists and society. The synopsis leads to the conclusion that instructional materials and student assessment tools developed earlier for teaching the history of science are relevant today. Science--technology--society--environment and socioscientific issues, two of the present six domains of humanistic school science, are given special attention. An example of their teaching materials is described, which illustrates in detail how to organize lessons or units particularly suited for the substantial majority of high school students who would not enroll in any current science classes if not required for graduation. Trends suggested for the future are based on shifts in current global economics.

Learning could not be thought of as unrelated to cognitive processes and cognitive processes are not unrelated to affective ones; thus, the current study tried to empirically examine the influence of Emotion Based Language Instruction (EBLI) in fostering teaching oral skills to EFL learners. An IELTS test was utilized to measure the progress of both control and experimental groups at the beginning of the research and also at the end. The content of the material chosen to be taught for experimental group was selectively written based on the Metric of Emotioncy designed by Pishghadam (2016). The differences in scores of pre and posttest of IELTS were statistically calculated to observe the effect of EBLI. The results revealed a significant change in speaking skill in experimental group and a change in listening skill, though it was not statistically significant. The results of the current investigation can increase the knowledge on applying EBLI in teaching foreign/second languages.
