Abstract

In graphene spintronics, interaction of localized magnetic moments with the electron spins paves a new way to explore the underlying spin relaxation mechanism. A self-assembled layer of organic cobalt-porphyrin (CoPP) molecules on graphene provides a desired platform for such studies via the magnetic moments of porphyrin-bound cobalt atoms. In this work a study of spin transport properties of graphene spin-valve devices functionalized with such CoPP molecules as a function of temperature via non-local spin-valve and Hanle spin precession measurements is reported. For the functionalized (molecular) devices, we observe a slight decrease in the spin relaxation time ({\tau}s), which could be an indication of enhanced spin-flip scattering of the electron spins in graphene in the presence of the molecular magnetic moments. The effect of the molecular layer is masked for low quality samples (low mobility), possibly due to dominance of Elliot-Yafet (EY) type spin relaxation mechanisms.

Abstract

We developed a spin transport model for a diffusive channel with coupled localized states that result in an effective increase of spin precession frequencies and a reduction of spin relaxation times in the system. We apply this model to Hanle spin precession measurements obtained on monolayer epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) (MLEG). Combined with newly performed measurements on quasi-free-standing monolayer epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) our analysis shows that the different values for the diffusion coefficient measured in charge and spin transport measurements in MLEG and the high values for the spin relaxation time can be explained by the influence of localized states arising from the buffer layer at the interface between the graphene and the SiC surface., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, including supplementary material

Abstract

We present a new robust setup that explains and demonstrates the quantum of electrical conductance for a general audience and which is continuously available in a public space. The setup allows users to manually thin a gold wire of several atoms in diameter while monitoring its conductance in real time. During the experiment, a characteristic step-like conductance decrease due to rearrangements of atoms in the cross-section of the wire is observed. Just before the wire breaks, a contact consisting of a single atom with a characteristic conductance close to the quantum of conductance can be maintained up to several seconds. The setup is operated full-time, needs practically no maintenance and is used on different educational levels.

4. Bistable hysteresis and resistance switching in hydrogen gold junctions

Abstract

Current-voltage characteristics of H2-Au molecular junctions exhibit intriguing steps around a characteristic voltage of 40 mV. Surprisingly, we find that a hysteresis is connected to these steps with a typical time scale > 10 ms. This time constant scales linearly with the power dissipated in the junction beyond an ofset power P_s = IV_s. We propose that the hysteresis is related to vibrational heating of both the molecule in the junction and a set of surrounding hydrogen molecules. Remarkably, we can engineer our junctions such that the hysteresis' characteristic time becomes >days. 5. Monte Carlo study of multiply crosslinked semiflexible polymer networks

Abstract

We present a method to generate realistic, three-dimensional networks of crosslinked semiflexible polymers. The free energy of these networks is obtained from the force-extension characteristics of the individual polymers and their persistent directionality through the crosslinks. A Monte Carlo scheme is employed to obtain isotropic, homogeneous networks that minimize the free energy, and for which all of the relevant parameters can be varied: the persistence length, the contour length as well as the crosslinking length may be chosen at will. We also provide an initial survey of the mechanical properties of our networks subjected to shear strains, showing them to display the expected non-linear stiffening behavior. 6. Single atom adhesion in optimized gold nanojunctions

Abstract

We study the interaction between single apex atoms in a metallic contact, using the break junction geometry. By carefully 'training' our samples, we create stable junctions in which no further atomic reorganization takes place. This allows us to study the relation between the so-called jump out of contact (from contact to tunnelling regime) and jump to contact (from tunnelling to contact regime) in detail. Our data can be fully understood within a relatively simple elastic model, where the elasticity k of the electrodes is the only free parameter. We find 5 < k < 32 N/m. Furthermore, the interaction between the two apex atoms on both electrodes, observed as a change of slope in the tunnelling regime, is accounted for by the same model.

Abstract

Methods and concepts developed in research on the energy balance of husbandry animals (including fish) are used in studies on nutrient and energy requirements and feed evaluation. Because of methodological difficulties, in fish such studies were restricted to juvenile and adult animals. Data on energy resource partitioning in larval fish are scarce. Eleuthero-embryos provide a good model for the study of energy metabolism in the early life stages of fish, since they constitute a simple system without dietary influence. In the present paper, a review of energy resource partitioning in the African catfish ( (Burchell)) is given, based on data of the proximate analysis of growing embryos during the egg and eleuthero-embryonal stage and of starving larvae. Oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production and ammonia ex­cretion were also measured. Both the proximate analysis data and the respirometry measurements were used to assess the energy substrates during subsequent develop­mental stages. The results are compared with the predictions of a computer simulation model based on the biochemical pathways underlying the energy metabolism. The efficacy of aclidinium was compared with tiotropium and glycopyrronium, using a network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in moderate-to-severe COPD patients. Methods: A systematic review was performed to identify RCTs evaluating aclidinium 400 µg twice daily (BID), glycopyrronium 50 µg once daily (OD), tiotropium 18 µg OD, or tiotropium 5 µg OD in adults with moderate-to-severe COPD. The outcomes of interest were: trough forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1); St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) total score and proportion of patients achieving ≥4 unit change; Transition Dyspnea Index (TDI) focal score and proportion of patients achieving ≥1 point change. The results were synthesized by means of a Bayesian NMA. Results: Twenty-one studies (22,542 patients) were included: aclidinium 400 µg BID (three studies); tiotropium 5 µg OD (three studies); tiotropium 18 µg OD (13 studies); and glycopyrronium 50 µg OD (two studies). Regarding trough FEV1 at 24 weeks, aclidinium demonstrated comparable efficacy to tiotropium 5 µg (difference in change from baseline [CFB]), (0.02 L [95% credible interval CrI −0.05, 0.09]); tiotropium 18 µg (0.02 L [95% CrI −0.05, 0.08]); and glycopyrronium (0.00 L [95% CrI −0.07, 0.07]). Aclidinium resulted in higher improvement in SGRQ score at 24 weeks, compared to tiotropium 5 µg (difference in CFB, −2.44 [95% CrI −4.82, −0.05]); and comparable results to tiotropium 18 µg (−1.80 [95% CrI −4.52, 0.14]) and glycopyrronium (−1.52 [95% CrI −4.08, 1.03]). Improvements in TDI score were comparable for all treatments. Conclusion: Maintenance treatment with aclidinium 400 µg BID is expected to produce similar improvements in lung function, health-related quality of life, and dyspnea compared to tiotropium 5 µg OD; tiotropium 18 µg OD; and glycopyrronium 50 µg OD. Contains fulltext : 245451.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), PURPOSE: Between 0.1-3% of injured children who present at a hospital emergency department ultimately die as a result of their injuries. These events are typically reported as unnatural causes of death and may result from either accidental or non-accidental trauma (NAT). Examples of the latter include trauma that is inflicted directly or resulting from neglect. Although consultation with a forensic physician is mandatory for all deceased children, the prevalence of fatal inflicted trauma or neglect among children is currently unclear. METHODS: This is a retrospective study that included children (0-18 years) who presented and died at one of the 11 Level I trauma centers in the Netherlands between January 1, 2014, and January 1, 2019. Outcomes were classified based on the conclusions of the Child Abuse and Neglect team or those of forensic pathologists and/or the court in cases referred for legally mandated autopsies. Cases in which conclusions were unavailable and there was no clear accidental cause of death were reviewed by an expert panel. RESULTS: The study included 175 cases of childhood death. Seventeen (9.7%) of these children died due to inflicted trauma (9.7%), 18 (10.3%) due to neglect, and 140 (80%) due to accidents. Preschool children (< 5 years old) were significantly more likely to present with injuries due to inflicted trauma and neglect compared to older children (44% versus 6%, p < 0.001, odds ratio [OR] 5.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.66-12.65). Drowning accounted for 14 of the 18 (78%) pediatric deaths due to neglect, representing 8% of the total cases. Postmortem radiological studies and autopsies were performed on 37 (21%) of all cases of childhood death. CONCLUSION: One of every five pediatric deaths in our nationwide Level I trauma center study was attributed to NAT; 44% of these deaths were the result of trauma experienced by preschool-aged children. Nitric oxide (NO) synthesis eliminates severe hypoperfusion of kidney, intestine and pancreas and regulates cardiac output, organ perfusion and systemic blood pressure during acute endotoxemia. Complete or partial NO synthesis suppression produces no significant effect in the initial endotoxemic stages. The NO synthesis inhibition is done using N(G)-nitro-L-arginine NO synthase inhibitor.

27. The current total economic burden of diabetes mellitus in the Netherlands

Abstract

Introduction and aim: Insight into the total economic burden of diabetes mellitus (DM) is essential for decision makers and payers. Currently available estimates for the Netherlands only include part of the total burden or are no longer up-to-date. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the current total economic burden of DM and its complications in the Netherlands, by including all the relevant cost components. Methods: The study combined a systematic literature review to identify all relevant published information and a targeted review to identify relevant information in the grey literature. The identified evidence was then combined to estimate the current total economic burden. Results: In 2016, there were an estimated 1.1 million DM patients in the Netherlands, of whom approximately 10% had type 1 and 90% had type 2 DM. The estimated current total economic burden of DM was € 6.8 billion in 2016. Healthcare costs (excluding costs of complications) were € 1.6 billion, direct costs of complications were € 1.3 billion and indirect costs due to productivity losses, welfare payments and complications were € 4.0 billion. Conclusion: DM and its complications pose a substantial economic burden to the Netherlands, which is expected to rise due to changing demographics and lifestyle. Indirect costs, such as welfare payments, accounted for a large portion of the current total economic burden of DM, while these cost components are often not included in cost estimations. Publicly available data for key cost drivers such as complications were scarce.

Abstract

We present an experimental study on the mechanical response of lithographically defined break junctions by measuring atomic chain formation, tunneling traces and Gundlach oscillations. The calibration factor, i.e., the ratio between the electrode movement and the bending of the substrate, is found to be 2.5 times larger than expected from a simple mechanical model. This result is consistent with previous finite-element calculations. Comparing different samples, the mechanical response is found to be similar for electrode separations >4 Å. However, for smaller electrode separations significant sample-to-sample variations appear. These variations are ascribed to differences in the shape of the two electrodes on the atomic scale which cannot be controlled by the fabrication process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Not much is known about the favourable indoor air conditions in long term care facilities (ltcf’s), where older adults suffering from dementia live. Due to the decrease in cognition function, it is hard to evaluate comfort and health in this group. Nevertheless, infectious diseases are a persistent problem. Based on literature an assessment method has been developed to analyse ltcf’s to determine if differences in building characteristics and HVAC systems influence the spread of airborne infectious diseases. The developed method is applied in seven long term care facilities in the Netherlands. From this research it can be concluded that this method has potential to evaluate and compare ltcf’s and develop design guidelines for these buildings. However, some adjustments to the methodology are necessary to achieve this objective. Therefore the relation between the indoor environment and infection risk is not yet analysed, but a consistent procedure to analyse this link is provided.

Abstract

To develop a hyperdynamic sepsis model in rats, four Escherichia coli strains were used, which differed in the presence or absence of a capsule or K antigen (K1 and K-, respectively) and/or in O serogroup (O9 and O18). Of the two clinical isolates, O9K- did not survive in rat serum, whereas O18K1 and two isogenic laboratory strains (O18K1 and O18K-) were able to resist serum bacteriolysis. Pentobarbital-anesthetized rats (n = 21) received an intravenous bolus of 10(9) bacteria. In contrast to the two noncapsulated strains, both capsulated strains induced hyperdynamic shock; arterial lactate rose from a mean value of .91 to 3.09 mmol.L-1, systemic vascular resistance dropped from 1.15 to .78 mmHg.min.mL-1, and cardiac output transiently increased from 98 to 115 mL.min-1; renal plasma flow remained at 3-4 mL.min-1, whereas glomerular filtration rate decreased from 1.3 to .7 mL.min-1. Laparotomy, which is often performed to study kidney function, completely abolished the hyperdynamic condition, while glomerular filtration rate was still decreased. We conclude that in rats, in contrast to humans, capsulated bacteria are required to induce a hyperdynamic septic shock; the hyperdynamic characteristics of the shock do not occur in animals subjected to a laparotomy.

Loneliness can decrease mental well-being and is therefore considered as clinical relevant. Most loneliness-studies focus solely on seniors and studies about loneliness through the lifespan are not unequivocal. Present study focuses on emotional and social loneliness, correlations between relationship quality and emotional as well as social loneliness added with gender differences within these correlations. Three age groups, all with life partner, were involved; young-adults, adults and old-adults. There seems no difference in emotional loneliness between these age groups. Young-adults seem less social lonely compared to adults and old-adults, t (179) = -2.69, p = .008. The strength of the negative relation between emotional as well as social loneliness and relationship quality is different for the age groups. Gender differences within these relations have not been found. Even after controlling for background variables, there seems no relation between age and loneliness. Explanations for the research results, recommendations and limitations are provided. Omdat eenzaamheid kan leiden tot verminderd psychisch welbevinden, is het klinisch relevant. Abstract

Despite the wide use of laparotomy to study kidney function, the possible influence of this procedure on systemic and renal parameters in septic rats is unknown. We studied this in anesthetized Wistar rats with and without endotoxin shock (1 h Escherichia coli O 127.B8: 8 mg.kg-1 infusion). We also compared clearance of creatinine and inulin to measure glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Laparotomy attenuated the endotoxin-induced decrease in cardiac output and abolished the increase in systemic and renal vascular resistance, while renal plasma flow was maintained. Better perfusion in other organs as well was indicated by a more gradual increase in arterial lactate concentration and less intestinal damage. By contrast, GFR decreased considerably during endotoxemia, irrespective of laparotomy. This change in GFR could be reliably assessed using creatinine clearance. The ratio of creatinine-to-inulin clearance averaged between .5 and .75. Renal ATP content did not change and the endotoxin-induced increase in the number of granulocytes lodged in glomeruli was not affected by laparotomy. In conclusion, our study indicates that laparotomy significantly influences the vascular effects caused by endotoxin. Laparotomy also revealed an effect of endotoxin on GFR, independent of renal blood flow.
