The primary goal of the AEgIS experiment is to precisely measure the free fall of antihydrogen within Earth's gravitational field. To this end, a cold ~50K antihydrogen beam has to pass through two grids forming a moir\'e deflectometer before annihilating onto a position-sensitive detector, which shall determine the vertical position of the annihilation vertex relative to the grids with micrometric accuracy. Here we introduce a vertexing detector based on a modified mobile camera sensor and experimentally demonstrate that it can measure the position of antiproton annihilations with an accuracy of $0.62^{+0.40}_{-0.22}\mu m$, which represents a 35-fold improvement over the previous state-of-the-art for real-time antiproton vertexing. Importantly, these antiproton detection methods are directly applicable to antihydrogen. Moreover, the sensitivity to light of the sensor enables the in-situ calibration of the moir\'e deflectometer, significantly reducing systematic errors. This sensor emerges as a breakthrough technology for achieving the \aegis scientific goals and has been selected as the basis for the development of a large-area detector for conducting antihydrogen gravity measurements., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

The creation of an electron space charge in a dipole magnetic trap and the subsequent injection of positrons has been experimentally demonstrated. Positrons (5eV) were magnetically guided from their source and injected into the trapping field generated by a permanent magnet (0.6T at the poles) using a cross field E $\times$ B drift, requiring tailored electrostatic and magnetic fields. The electron cloud is created by thermionic emission from a tungsten filament. The maximum space charge potential of the electron cloud reaches -42V, which is consistent with an average electron density of ($4 \pm 2$) $\times 10^{12}$ $\text{m}^{-3}$ and a Debye length of ($2 \pm 1$) $\text{cm}$. We demonstrate that the presence of this space potential does not hamper efficient positron injection. Understanding the effects of the negative space charge on the injection and confinement of positrons represents an important intermediate step towards the production of a confined electron-positron pair plasma.

The oxygen deficiency $\delta$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) plays a crucial role for affecting high-temperature superconductivity. We applied (coincident) Doppler broadening spectroscopy of the electron-positron annihilation line to study in situ the temperature dependence of the oxygen concentration and its depth profile in single crystalline YBCO film grown on SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrates. The oxygen diffusion during tempering was found to lead to a distinct depth dependence of $\delta$, which is not accessible using X-ray diffraction. A steady-state reached within a few minutes is defined by both, the oxygen exchange at the surface and at the interface to the STO substrate. Moreover, we revealed the depth dependent critical temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ in the as prepared and tempered YBCO film.

Heusler compounds exhibit a wide range of different electronic ground states and are hence expected to be applicable as functional materials in novel electronic and spintronic devices. Since the growth of large and defect-free Heusler crystals is still challenging, single crystals of Fe2TiSn and Cu2MnAl were grown by the optical floating zone technique. Two positron annihilation techniques -Angular Correlation of Annihilation Radiation (ACAR) and Doppler Broadening Spectroscopy (DBS)- were applied in order to study both, the electronic structure and lattice defects. Recently, we succeeded to observe clearly the anisotropy of the Fermi surface of Cu2MnAl, whereas the spectra of Fe2TiSn were disturbed by foreign phases. In order to estimate the defect concentration in different samples of Heusler compounds the positron diffusion length was determined by DBS using a monoenergetic positron beam.

Presently large efforts are conducted towards the development of highly brilliant gamma beams via Compton back scattering of photons from a high-brilliance electron beam, either on the basis of a normal-conducting electron linac or a (superconducting) Energy Recovery Linac (ERL). Particularly ERL's provide an extremely brilliant electron beam, thus enabling to generate highest-quality gamma beams. A 2.5 MeV gamma beam with an envisaged intensity of 10^15 s^-1, as ultimately envisaged for an ERL-based gamma-beam facility, narrow band width (10^-3), and extremely low emittance (10^-4 mm^2 mrad^2) offers the possibility to produce a high-intensity bright polarized positron beam. Pair production in a face-on irradiated W converter foil (200 micron thick, 10 mm long) would lead to the emission of 2 x 10^13 (fast) positrons per second, which is four orders of magnitude higher compared to strong radioactive ^22Na sources conventionally used in the laboratory.Using a stack of converter foils and subsequent positron moderation, a high-intensity low-energy beam of moderated positrons can be produced. Two different source setups are presented: a high-brightness positron beam with a diameter as low as 0.2 mm, and a high-intensity beam of 3 x 10^11 moderated positrons per second. Hence, profiting from an improved moderation efficiency, the envisaged positron intensity would exceed that of present high-intensity positron sources by a factor of 100., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Vacancy defects in thin film laser ablated SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 were identified using variable energy positron annihilation lifetime measurements. Strontium vacancy related defects were the dominant positron traps and, apart from in the top ~ 50 nm, were found to be uniformly distributed. The surface layer showed an increase in annihilation from larger open-volume defects, large vacancy clusters or nanovoids., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, 1 Table

Crystal defects in magnesium and magnesium based alloys like AZ31 are of major importance for the understanding of their macroscopic properties. We have investigated defects and their chemical surrounding in Mg and AZ31 on an atomic scale with Doppler broadening spectroscopy of the positron annihilation radiation. In these Doppler spectra the chemical information and the defect contribution have to be thoroughly separated. For this reason samples of annealed Mg were irradiated with Mg-ions in order to create exclusively defects. In addition Al- and Zn-ion irradiation on Mg-samples was performed in order to create samples with defects and impurity atoms. The ion irradiated area on the samples was investigated with laterally and depth resolved positron Doppler broadening spectroscopy (DBS) and compared with preceding SRIM-simulations of the vacancy distribution, which are in excellent agreement. The investigation of the chemical vicinity of crystal defects in AZ31 was performed with coincident Doppler broadening spectroscopy (CDBS) by comparing Mg-ion irradiated AZ31 with Mg-ion irradiated Mg. No formation of solute-vacancy complexes was found due to the ion irradiation, despite the high defect mobility., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B on March 20 20076.
