Abstract The development of high-performance metal-free organic X-ray scintillators (OXSTs), characterized by a synergistic combination of robust X-ray absorption, efficient exciton utilization, and short luminescence lifetimes, poses a considerable challenge. Here we present an effective strategy for achieving augmented X-ray scintillation through the utilization of halogenated open-shell organic radical scintillators. Our experimental results demonstrate that the synthesized scintillators exhibit strong X-ray absorption derived from halogen atoms, display efficacious X-ray stability, and theoretically achieve 100% exciton utilization efficiency with a short lifetime (∼18 ns) due to spin-allowed doublet transitions. The superior X-ray scintillation performance exhibited by these organic radicals is not only exploitable in X-ray radiography for contrast imaging of various objects but also applicable in a medical high-resolution micro-computer-tomography system for the clear visualization of fibrous veins within a bamboo stick. Our study substantiates the promise of organic radicals as prospective candidates for OXSTs, offering valuable insights and a roadmap for the development of advanced organic radical scintillators geared towards achieving high-quality X-ray radiography.

Abstract Enzymes are making a significant impact on chemical synthesis. However, the range of chemical products achievable through biocatalysis is still limited compared to the vast array of products possible with organic synthesis. For instance, azoxy products have rarely been synthesized using enzyme catalysts. In this study, we discovered that fungal unspecific peroxygenases are promising catalysts for synthesizing azoxy products from simple aniline starting materials. The catalytic features (up to 48,450 turnovers and a turnover frequency of 6.7 s–1) and substrate transformations (up to 99% conversion with 98% chemoselectivity) highlight the synthetic potential. We propose a mechanism where peroxygenase-derived hydroxylamine and nitroso compounds spontaneously (non-enzymatically) form the desired azoxy products. This work expands the reactivity repertoire of biocatalytic transformations in the underexplored field of azoxy compound formation reactions.

Abstract Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), reduces wheat yields and grain quality, thus posing a significant threat to global food security. Wild relatives of wheat serve as valuable resources for resistance to powdery mildew. Here, the powdery mildew resistance gene Pm6Sl is cloned from the wild wheat species Aegilops longissima. It encodes a nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) protein featuring a CC-BED module formed by a zinc finger BED (Znf-BED) domain integrated into the coiled-coil (CC) domain. The function of Pm6Sl is validated via mutagenesis, gene silencing, and transgenic assays. In addition, we develop a resistant germplasm harbouring Pm6Sl in a very small segment with no linkage drag along with the diagnostic gene marker pm6sl-1 to facilitate Pm6Sl deployment in wheat breeding programs. The cloning of Pm6Sl, a resistance gene with BED-NLR architecture, will increase our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying BED-NLR-mediated resistance to various pathogens.

Objectives: This study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to parent-child communication in pediatric palliative care, providing insights for medical professionals developing targeted interventions to enhance parent-child communication and improve its effectiveness. Methods: Whittemore and Knafl’s integrative review method was employed to guide a systematic search for literature in six databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL Complete, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library). Peer-reviewer articles published in the English language from inception to December 2023. All of the identified studies were screened, extracted, and analyzed independently by two researchers. Results: Twenty-four articles were included. The findings of the relevant studies were analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes were identified as facilitators: legacy-making, resilience training programs, guidance from the healthcare team, and positive communication. Seven themes were identified as barriers: denial, being unprepared and evasive, mutual protection, being overwhelmed by painful emotions and overloaded with information, incorrect views of medical professionals and parents, negative communication, and cultural context. Conclusions: Parents and professionals should avoid myths about protecting the child and encourage open communication that respects the child’s wishes. The specialized pediatric palliative care team should carefully monitor parent-child communication, determine if any obstacles exist, and design more interventions to enhance it.

Diaporthe spp. are a significant plant pathogen causing wood canker, blight, dieback, and fruit decay in numerous economically important plant hosts worldwide. D. nobilis has been identified as a highly pathogenic isolate responsible for causing kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) rot, representing one of the most significant threats to the kiwifruit industry. Here, a comprehensive genome-wide sequence of D. nobilis strain DJY16A 5-1 utilizing advanced Nanopore third-generation sequencing technology is presented. The genome of D. nobilis strain DJY16A 5-1 was assembled into 26 contigs containing a combined size of 59.28 Mb and N50 length of 4.47 Mb. The virulence-related genes were analyzed, including 3,407 transmembrane proteins, 1,410 secreted proteins, 1,866 signal peptides, 135 effector proteins, 1,069 carbohydrate-active enzymes, 143 membrane transporter proteins, and 4,995 pathogen–host interaction-related proteins. The genome assembly and annotation facilitate the analysis of pathogen–host interaction, laying the foundation for in-depth research on the infection mechanism of pathogens. The keys to constructing numerical schemes for nonlinear partial differential equations are accuracy, handling of the nonlinear terms, and physical properties (energy dissipation or conservation). In this paper, we employ the exponential scalar auxiliary variable (E-SAV) method to solve a semi-linear wave equation. By defining two different variables and combining the Crank−Nicolson scheme, two semi-discrete schemes are proposed, both of which are second-order and maintain Hamiltonian conservation. Two numerical experiments are presented to verify the reliability of the theory.

Abstract Background Histone deacetylases (HDACs) and histone acetyltransferases (HATs) are involved in plant growth and development as well as in response to environmental changes, by dynamically regulating gene acetylation levels. Although there have been numerous reports on the identification and function of HDAC and HAT in herbaceous plants, there are fewer report related genes in woody plants under drought stress. Results In this study, we performed a genome-wide analysis of the HDAC and HAT families in Populus trichocarpa, including phylogenetic analysis, gene structure, conserved domains, and expression analysis. A total of 16 PtrHDACs and 12 PtrHATs were identified in P. trichocarpa genome. Analysis of cis-elements in the promoters of PtrHDACs and PtrHATs revealed that both gene families could respond to a variety of environmental signals, including hormones and drought. Furthermore, real time quantitative PCR indicated that PtrHDA906 and PtrHAG3 were significantly responsive to drought. PtrHDA906, PtrHAC1, PtrHAC3, PtrHAG2, PtrHAG6 and PtrHAF1 consistently responded to abscisic acid, methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid under drought conditions. Conclusions Our study demonstrates that PtrHDACs and PtrHATs may respond to drought through hormone signaling pathways, which helps to reveal the hub of acetylation modification in hormone regulation of abiotic stress.

Abstract Powdery mildew is a devastating disease that affects wheat yield and quality. Wheat wild relatives represent valuable sources of disease resistance genes. Cloning and characterization of these genes will facilitate their incorporation into wheat breeding programs. Here, we report the cloning of Pm57, a wheat powdery mildew resistance gene from Aegilops searsii. It encodes a tandem kinase protein with putative kinase-pseudokinase domains followed by a von Willebrand factor A domain (WTK-vWA), being ortholog of Lr9 that mediates wheat leaf rust resistance. The resistance function of Pm57 is validated via independent mutants, gene silencing, and transgenic assays. Stable Pm57 transgenic wheat lines and introgression lines exhibit high levels of all-stage resistance to diverse isolates of the Bgt fungus, and no negative impacts on agronomic parameters are observed in our experimental set-up. Our findings highlight the emerging role of kinase fusion proteins in plant disease resistance and provide a valuable gene for wheat breeding.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) measuring 30 ± 10 nm in diameter are utilized in various applications, including batteries, plastics, ceramics, cosmetics, flame retardants, and food. However, their potential impact and risk on aquatic ecosystems remain unclear. This study examined the hepatotoxic effects of dietary ZnO NPs in rare minnow. Three hundred rare minnows were fed diets containing 0 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg and 60 mg/kg of ZnO NPs for 60 days, with hepatotoxicity assessments at 15-day intervals. The histological data showed that ZnO NPs severely damage liver tissues, causing cytoplasmic vacuolization and irregular or missing nuclei. The treatment groups showed a significant rise in the liver injury index (P < 0.05). Moreover, there was a notable increase in zinc accumulation in the ZnO NPs groups compared to the control group (P < 0.05). ZnO NPs also reduced body weight and hepato-somatic index (HSI) in rare minnows. The enzyme activity results showed elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), total cholesterol (T-CHO), triglyceride (TG), acetyl Coa carboxylase (ACC), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) in the ZnO NPs fed groups, while total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased. Further investigation found that accumulation of ZnO NPs in the liver tissues up-regulated the levels of genes related to antioxidant (mn-sod, cat and nf-κb), pro-apoptotic (bax) and lipogenesis (gpat3, dgat1a and dgat1b), while down-regulating genes associated with lipid catabolism (cpt1 and tpi1). These findings suggest that dietary ZnO NPs cause hepatotoxicity by inducing oxidative stress through ROS, triggering apoptosis, and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. The results indicate that ZnO NPs may pose a significant threat to aquatic animals and ecosystems.

BackgroundPresently, the problem of digital addiction in young children is becoming more and more prominent, and digital addiction can cause significant harm to the healthy physical and mental development of young children. A growing body of research suggests that family socioeconomic status and parenting styles are associated with digital addiction. However, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms behind this relationship, and few studies have explored whether this relationship holds in young children populations. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether parenting styles mediate the relationship between family socioeconomic status and young children’s digital addiction and whether young children’s gender moderates this mediation process.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was used. 403 parents of young children were asked to complete online questionnaires, including the Internet Addiction Test-10 (IAT-10) the Chinese version of the Parenting Style Questionnaire (C-EMBU). The mediation model with moderation was tested using the PROCESS plug-in for SPSS.Results(1) Family socioeconomic status is significantly and negatively associated with digital addiction in young children. (2) Parenting styles (emotional warmth and understanding, punishment and harshness) mediate the relationship between family socioeconomic status and young children’s digital addiction. (3) Young children’s gender moderates the relationship between family socioeconomic status and punishment and severity parenting styles, emotional warmth and understanding parenting styles and young children’s digital addiction.ConclusionThe results indicate that family socioeconomic status can prevent digital addiction in young children through the path of improving parenting styles. However, there is still an overall negative effect of family socioeconomic status on young children’s digital addiction.

Abstract Creating circularly polarized organic afterglow system with elevated triplet energy levels, suppressed non-radiative transitions, and effective chirality, which are three critical prerequisites for achieving blue circularly polarized afterglow, has posed a formidable challenge. Herein, a straightforward approach is unveiled to attain blue circularly polarized afterglow materials by covalently self-confining isolated chiral chromophore within polymer matrix. The formation of robust hydrogen bonds within the polymer matrix confers a distinctly isolated and stabilized molecular state of chiral chromophores, endowing a blue emission band at 414 nm, lifetime of 3.0 s, and luminescent dissymmetry factor of ~ 10−2. Utilizing the synergistic afterglow and chirality energy transfer, full-color circularly polarized afterglow systems are endowed by doping colorful fluorescent molecules into designed blue polymers, empowering versatile applications. This work paves the way for the streamlined design of blue circularly polarized afterglow materials, expanding the horizons of circularly polarized afterglow materials into various domains.

Abstract Wheat powdery mildew is one of the most destructive diseases threatening global wheat production. The wild relatives of wheat constitute rich sources of diversity for powdery mildew resistance. Here, we report the map-based cloning of the powdery mildew resistance gene Pm13 from the wild wheat species Aegilops longissima. Pm13 encodes a mixed lineage kinase domain-like (MLKL) protein that contains an N-terminal-domain of MLKL (MLKL_NTD) domain in its N-terminus and a C-terminal serine/threonine kinase (STK) domain. The resistance function of Pm13 is validated by mutagenesis, gene silencing, transgenic assay, and allelic association analyses. The development of introgression lines with significantly reduced chromosome segments of Ae. longissima encompassing Pm13 enables widespread deployment of this gene into wheat cultivars. The cloning of Pm13 may provide valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying Pm13-mediated powdery mildew resistance and highlight the important roles of kinase fusion proteins (KFPs) in wheat immunity.

Abstract Hemiacetal compounds are valuable building blocks in synthetic chemistry, but their enzymatic synthesis is limited and often hindered by the instability of hemiacetals in aqueous environments. Here, we show that this challenge can be addressed through reaction engineering by using immobilized peroxygenase from Agrocybe aegerita (AaeUPO) under neat reaction conditions, which allows for the selective C-H bond oxyfunctionalization of environmentally significant cyclic ethers to cyclic hemiacetals. A wide range of chiral cyclic hemiacetal products are prepared in >99% enantiomeric excess and 95170 turnover numbers of AaeUPO. Furthermore, by changing the reaction medium from pure organic solvent to alkaline aqueous conditions, cyclic hemiacetals are in situ transformed into lactones. Lactams are obtained under the applied conditions, albeit with low enzyme activity. These findings showcase the synthetic potential of AaeUPO and offer a practical enzymatic approach to produce chiral cyclic hemiacetals through C-H oxyfunctionalization under mild conditions.

This study aimed to utilize machine learning to explore the psychological similarities and differences between suicide attempt (SA) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), with a particular focus on the role of psychological pain. A total of 2385 middle school students were recruited using cluster sampling. The random forest algorithm was used with 25 predictors to develop classification models of SA and NSSI, respectively, and to estimate the importance scores of each predictor. Based on these scores and related theories, shared risk factors (control feature set) and distinct risk factors (distinction feature set) were selected and tested to distinguish between NSSI and SA. The machine learning algorithm exhibited fair to good performance in classifying SA history [Area Under Curves (AUCs): 0.65–0.87] and poor performance in classifying NSSI history (AUC: 0.61–0.68). The distinction feature set comprised pain avoidance, family togetherness, and deviant peer affiliation, while the control feature set included pain arousal, painful feelings, and crisis events. The distinction feature set slightly but stably outperformed the control feature set in classifying SA from NSSI. The three-dimensional psychological pain model, especially pain avoidance, might play a dominant role in understanding the similarities and differences between SA and NSSI.

Summary: Generating cell types with properties of embryo cells with full developmental potential is of great biological importance. Here, we present a protocol for generating mouse morula-like cells (MLCs) resembling 8- to 16-cell stage embryo cells. We describe steps for induction, via increasing Stat3 activation, and the isolation of MLCs. We then detail procedures for segregating MLCs into blastocyst cell fates and how to create embryo-like structures from them. Oysters are notably susceptible to accumulating substantial amounts of cadmium (Cd), leading to food safety concerns, yet the molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Previous study identified a significant correlation between polymorphisms in the Zip1 and Zip3 of Fujian oyster (Crassostrea angulata) and the levels of Cd accumulation. Zip1 and Zip3, belonging to the Zip family, are primarily responsible for the cellular transport of zinc and other metal ions. To delve deeper into their roles in Cd transport within oysters, this research cloned and analyzed the sequences of Fujian oyster Zip1 and Zip3. The open reading frames for Zip1 and Zip3 were 960 and 978 bp, respectively, encoding proteins of 319 and 325 amino acids. Following Cd exposure, the expression levels of these genes in the mantle, gills, and other tissues initially increased significantly before decreasing, demonstrating a dose-dependent response. The lowest expression levels were observed in the adductor muscle, with Zip1 reaching its highest expression in the mantle and Zip3 in the visceral mass. In vitro RNAi experiments revealed that silencing Zip1 led to a 1.26-fold decrease in new 113Cd accumulation in the mantle, whereas silencing Zip3 resulted in a 1.29-fold increase. Immunohistochemistry showed weak expression of Zip1 and Zip3 proteins in the connective tissue of the mantle. In summary, Zip1 and Zip3 in Fujian oyster can transport Cd as a substrate, and played different roles in the absorption and efflux of Cd.

Hemorrhagic stroke, specifically intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), has been implicated in the development of persistent cognitive impairment, significantly compromising the quality of life for affected individuals. Nevertheless, the precise underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here, we report for the first time that the accumulation of iron within the hippocampus, distal to the site of ICH in the striatum, is causally linked to the observed cognitive impairment with both clinical patient data and animal model. Both susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) demonstrated significant iron accumulation in the hippocampus of ICH patients, which is far from the actual hematoma. Logistical regression analysis and multiple linear regression analysis identified iron level as an independent risk factor with a negative correlation with post-ICH cognitive impairment. Using a mouse model of ICH, we demonstrated that iron accumulation triggers an excessive activation of neural stem cells (NSCs). This overactivation subsequently leads to the depletion of the NSC pool, diminished neurogenesis, and the onset of progressive cognitive dysfunction. Mechanistically, iron accumulation elevated the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which downregulated the expression of Itga3. Notably, pharmacological chelation of iron accumulation or scavenger of aberrant ROS levels, as well as conditionally overexpressed Itga3 in NSCs, remarkably attenuated the exhaustion of NSC pool, abnormal neurogenesis and cognitive decline in the mouse model of ICH. Together, these results provide molecular insights into ICH-induced cognitive impairment, shedding light on the value of maintaining NSC pool in preventing cognitive dysfunction in patients with hemorrhagic stroke or related conditions.

Abstract Background The relationship of metabolic issues to pregnancy outcomes during assisted reproductive technology (ART) is gaining much attention. Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) is one of the most common metabolic indicators. Abnormal FPG not only affects the quality of life of human body, but also has a bearing on reproductive health. However, most attentions are paid on women's physical health and reproductive assessment, the health status of the male partner on pregnancy outcomes during ART treatment is often neglected. This study investigated whether male fasting hyperglycemia (FH, FPG > 6.1 mmol/L) can affect live birth rates (LBR) in singleton intrauterine clinical pregnancy women with cryo-thawed embryo transfer (CET) cycles. Material and methods A retrospective cohort study (370 CET cycles with first singleton clinical intrauterine pregnancy and grouped by male FPG) was conducted to analyze the relationship between male FH and clinical pregnancy outcomes using binary logistic regression; the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated as a measure of relevancy. Live birth rate was the main outcome measure. Results The live birth rate (LBR) was significantly lower [58.6% vs. 81.8%, P = 0.007, adjusted OR 0.635, 95% CI 0.456–0.884] and miscarriage rate (MR) was significantly higher [41.4% vs. 18.2%, P = 0.007, adjusted OR 1.575, 95% CI 1.131–2.195] in the FH group when compared with the Con group. There was no difference in healthy baby rate [88.2% vs. 89.6%, P = 0.058, adjusted OR 2.143, 95% CI 0.974–4.716] or abnormal birth weight rate (23.5% vs. 11.8%, P = 0.238, adjusted OR 2.859, 95% CI 0.777–10.460] between the FH and control group. No birth defects were observed in the present study. Conclusion Male FH is an independent risk factor for lower LBR and higher MR in singleton intrauterine pregnancy women with CET cycles.

The intermittent and stochastic characteristics of wind power pose a higher demand on the complementarity of hydropower. Studying the optimal coordinated operation of hydro–wind power systems has become an extremely effective way to create safe and efficient systems. This paper aims to study the optimal coordinated operation of a hybrid power system based on a newly established Simulink model. The analysis of the optimal coordinated operation undergoes two simulation steps, including the optimization of the complementary mode and the optimization of capacity allocation. The method of multiple complementary indicators is adopted to enable the optimization analysis. The results from the complementary analysis show that the hydraulic tracing effect obviously mitigates operational risks and reduces power losses under adverse wind speeds. The results from the analysis of capacity allocation also show that the marginal permeation of installed wind capacity will not exceed 250 MW for a 100 MW hydropower plant under random wind speeds. These simulation results are obtained based on the consideration of some real application scenarios, which help power plants to make the optimal operation plan with a high efficiency of wind energy and high hydro flexibility.

Porcine circovirus (PCV) typically causes severe immune suppression in pigs, leading to mixed clinical infections with various pathogens that can cause significant harm to the pig industry. PCV has four subgenotypes, with PCV4 being an emerging virus that requires investigation due to its potential for epidemic outbreaks. Therefore, there is a need to develop a method that can detect all four PCV strains simultaneously. In this study, four pairs of specific primers and TaqMan probes were designed based on the conserved sequence of the PCV1–4 ORF2 gene to establish a PCV1–4 TaqMan multiplex real-time quantitative PCR method. The novel method was compared to six commercial testing kits for its efficacy. Then, a total of 595 mixed samples of spleen and lymph node collected from 12 districts in Chengdu from July to December 2021 were tested using the novel method. The results showed that the novel PCV1–4 TaqMan multiplex real-time quantitative PCR detection method has satisfied specificity, sensitivity, and repeatability. The positive rates of PCV1, PCV2, and PCV3 in Chengdu were 2.18%, 31.60%, and 15.29%, respectively, while no positive PCV4 was detected. The mixed infection rate of PCV2 and PCV3 was 5.21%. Our novel method may be as a potential method for PCV1–4 detection. Currently, PCV2 is the main epidemic PCV subtype in Chengdu, while the potential threat of PCV4 should also be considered.

Relevant studies increasingly indicate that female reproductive health is confronted with substantial challenges. Emerging research has revealed that the microbiome interacts with the anatomy, histology, and immunity of the female reproductive tract, which are the cornerstone of maintaining female reproductive health and preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes. Currently, the precise mechanisms underlying their interaction and impact on physiological functions of the reproductive tract remain elusive, constituting a prominent area of investigation within the field of female reproductive tract microecology. From this new perspective, we explore the mechanisms of interactions between the microbiome and the anatomy, histology, and immunity of the female reproductive tract, factors that affect the composition of the microbiome in the female reproductive tract, as well as personalized medicine approaches in managing female reproductive tract health based on the microbiome. This study highlights the pivotal role of the female reproductive tract microbiome in maintaining reproductive health and influencing the occurrence of reproductive tract diseases. These findings support the exploration of innovative approaches for the prevention, monitoring and treatment of female reproductive tract diseases based on the microbiome.

Background: Early brain injury (EBI) caused by inflammatory responses in acute phase of Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) plays a vital role in the pathological progression of ICH. Increasing evidences demonstrate A1 reactive astrocytes are associated with the severity of EBI. G-protein coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1) has been proved mediating the neuroprotective effects of estrogen in central nervous system (CNS) disease. However, whether GPER1 plays a protective effect on ICH and A1 reactive astrocytes activation is not well studied. Methods: ICH model was established by infused the autologous whole blood into the right basal ganglia in wild type and GPER1 knockout mice. GPER1 specific agonist G1 and antagonist G15 were administered by intraperitoneal injection at 1 h or 0.5 h after ICH. Neurological function was detected on day 1 and day 3 by open field test and corner turn test following ICH. Besides, A1 reactive astrocytes were determined by immunofluorescence staining after ICH on day 3. To further identify the possible mechanism of GPER1 mediated neuroprotective effect, Western blot assays was performed after ICH on day 3. Results: After ICH, G1 treatment alleviated mice neurobehavior deficits on day 1 and day 3. Meanwhile, G1 treatment also significantly reduced the GFAP positive astrocytes and the C3 positive cells after ICH. Interestingly, G15 reversed the protective effect of G1 on the neurobehavior of ICH mice. Meanwhile, the expression of GFAP+C3+ A1 reactive astrocytes were also reduced by activation of GPER1. Mechanistic studies indicated TLR4 and NF-κB mediated the neuroprotective effect of GPER1. Conclusion: Generally, activation of GPER1 alleviated the EBI through inhibiting A1 reactive astrocytes activation via TLR4/NF-κB pathway after ICH in mice. Additionally, GPER1may be a promising target for ICH treatment.

Due to the high viscosity of pure [Bmim]Cl, PEG was selected to be co-solvent to form the solvent system. The dissolution and plasticization ability of PEG-[Bmim]Cl to poplar veneer was completed with processes such as hot pressing and coagulation bath to achieve the in-situ modification of poplar veneers to develop an innovative wood composite, which are expected to be molded. At the same time, the effects of the solvent system on the properties of wood composites were studied. The results showed that both the [Bmim]Cl-treated group (B) and the PEG-treated group (C) had a certain degree of plasticity when compared with the untreated group (A). The PEG-[Bmim]Cl-treated group (D) had the greatest ductility. The main reason was that PEG and [Bmim]Cl synergistically in situ dissolve the components of the veneer, increasing the proportion of the matrix phase (dissolved part). The interface bonding between the matrix phase and the reinforced phase was enhanced and resulted in the best comprehensive mechanical properties. However, no other derivative reactions occurred in each group.

Abstract Depression is a common mood disorder characterized by a range of clinical symptoms, including prolonged low mood and diminished interest. Although many clinical and animal studies have provided significant insights into the pathophysiology of depression, current treatment strategies are not sufficient to manage this disorder. It has been suggested that connexin (Cx)-based hemichannels are candidates for depression intervention by modifying the state of neuroinflammation. In this study, we investigated the antidepressant-like effect of a recently discovered selective Cx hemichannel inhibitor, a small organic molecule called D4. We first showed that D4 reduced hemichannel activity following systemic inflammation after LPS injections. Next, we found that D4 treatment prevented LPS-induced inflammatory response and depressive-like behaviors. These behavioral effects were accompanied by reduced astrocytic activation and hemichannel activity in depressive-like mice induced by repeated low-dose LPS challenges. D4 treatment also reverses depressive-like symptoms in mice subjected to chronic restraint stress (CRS). To test whether D4 broadly affected neural activity, we measured c-Fos expression in depression-related brain regions and found a reduction in c-Fos+ cells in different brain regions. D4 significantly normalized CRS-induced hypoactivation in several brain regions, including the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and lateral septum. Together, these results indicate that blocking Cx hemichannels using D4 can normalize neuronal activity and reduce depressive-like symptoms in mice by reducing neuroinflammation. Our work provides evidence of the antidepressant-like effect of D4 and supports glial Cx hemichannels as potential therapeutic targets for depression.

Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) have been widely applied in many fields. In order to enhance the comprehensive properties of TaB2-based UHTCs, the first collaborative use of fine TaC particles and dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was employed via spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1700 °C. The derived UHTCs exhibited an average grain size of 1.3 μm, a relative density of 98.6%, an elastic modulus of 386.3 GPa, and a nano hardness of 21.7 GPa, leading to a greatly improved oxidation resistance with a lower linear ablation rate at −3.3 × 10−2 μm/s, and a markedly reinforced ablation resistance with mass ablation rate of −1.3 × 10−3 mg/(s·cm2). The enhanced ablation resistance was attributable to the physical pinning effect, sealing effect and self-healing effect. Thus, this study provides a potential strategy for preparation of UHTCs with bettered ablation resistance and physical properties.

Loess is widely distributed in the northwest and other regions, and its unique structural forms such as large pores and strong water sensitivity lead to its collapsibility and collapse, which can easily induce slope instability. Guar gum and basalt fiber are natural green materials. For these reasons, this study investigated the solidification of loess by combining guar gum and basalt fiber and analyzed the impact of the guar gum content, fiber length, and fiber content on the soil shearing strength. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the microstructure of loess was examined, revealing the synergistic solidification mechanism of guar gum and basalt fibers. On this basis, a shear strength model was established through regression analysis with fiber length, guar gum content, and fiber content. The results indicate that adding guar gum and basalt fiber increases soil cohesion, as do fiber length, guar gum content, and fiber content. When the fiber length was 12 mm, the fiber content was 1.00%, and the guar gum content was equal to 0.50%, 0.75%, or 1.00%, the peak strength of the solidified loess increased by 82.80%, 85.90%, and 90.40%, respectively. According to the shear strength model, the predicted and test data of the shear strength of solidified loess are evenly distributed on both sides of parallel lines, indicating a good fit. These findings are theoretically significant and provide practical guidance for loess solidification engineering.

Loess has the characteristics of loose, large pore ratio, and strong water sensitivity. Once it encounters water, its structure is damaged easily and its strength is degraded, causing a degree of subgrade settlement. The water sensitivity of loess can be evaluated by permeability and disintegration tests. This study analyzes the effects of guar gum content, basalt fiber content, and basalt fiber length on the permeability and disintegration characteristics of solidified loess. The microstructure of loess was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) testing, revealing the synergistic solidification mechanism of guar gum and basalt fibers. A permeability model was established through regression analysis with guar gum content, confining pressure, basalt fiber content, and length. The research results indicate that the addition of guar gum reduces the permeability of solidified loess, the addition of fiber improves the overall strength, and the addition of guar gum and basalt fiber improves the disintegration resistance. When the guar gum content is 1.00%, the permeability coefficient and disintegration rate of solidified soil are reduced by 50.50% and 94.10%, respectively. When the guar gum content is 1.00%, the basalt fiber length is 12 mm, and the fiber content is 1.00%, the permeability of the solidified soil decreases by 31.9%, and the disintegration rate is 4.80%. The permeability model has a good fitting effect and is suitable for predicting the permeability of loess reinforced with guar gum and basalt fiber composite. This research is of vital theoretical worth and great scientific significance for guidelines on practicing loess solidification engineering.

Drought stress can impact the physiological and biochemical properties of crops. However, selenium (Se) can effectively alleviate the abiotic stress experienced by plants. This study aims to investigate how applying selenium to tomato leaves affects their antioxidant system and photosynthetic traits when subjected to drought conditions. The experiment used four different foliar selenium concentrations and three different irrigation levels. The investigation scrutinized the effects of foliar spraying employing different selenium concentrations on the antioxidant system, osmotic adjustment substances, photosynthetic performance, and growth indices of tomatoes under drought stress. The findings indicated that drought stress led to cellular oxidative damage, significantly elevating peroxide, MDA, proline, and soluble sugar content (p < 0.001). Under severe drought stress, malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline levels increased by 21.2% and 110.0% respectively, compared to well-watered conditions. Concurrently, the net photosynthetic rate exhibited a reduction of 26.0% and dry matter accumulation decreased by 35.5%. However, after spraying with a low concentration of selenium, selenium reduced oxidative damage and malondialdehyde content by reducing the content of peroxide in leaves, restoring photosynthesis, and promoting the normal growth of tomato. Compared to the control group, spraying with 2.5 mg·L−1 selenium resulted in a 21.5% reduction in MDA content, a 111.8% increase in net photosynthetic rate, and a 29.0% increase in dry matter accumulation. When subjected to drought stress conditions, foliar spraying of low concentrations of selenium (2.5 mg·L−1) can effectively reduce oxidative damage caused by drought stress and alleviate growth constraints in tomatoes. In addition, treatments with high selenium concentrations exhibited specific toxic effects. These findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms governing selenium-induced drought tolerance in tomatoes, thus advancing our comprehension of standard tomato production practices.

The oxidation step in Oolong tea processing significantly influences its final flavor and aroma. In this study, a gas sensors detection system based on 13 metal oxide semiconductors with strong stability and sensitivity to the aroma during the Oolong tea oxidation production is proposed. The gas sensors detection system consists of a gas path, a signal acquisition module, and a signal processing module. The characteristic response signals of the sensor exhibit rapid release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as aldehydes, alcohols, and olefins during oxidative production. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) is used to extract the features of the collected signals. Then, three classical recognition models and two convolutional neural network (CNN) deep learning models were established, including linear discriminant analysis (LDA), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), back-propagation neural network (BP-ANN), LeNet5, and AlexNet. The results indicate that the BP-ANN model achieved optimal recognition performance with a 3–4–1 topology at pc = 3 with accuracy rates for the calibration and prediction of 94.16% and 94.11%, respectively. Therefore, the proposed gas sensors detection system can effectively differentiate between the distinct stages of the Oolong tea oxidation process. This work can improve the stability of Oolong tea products and facilitate the automation of the oxidation process. The detection system is capable of long-term online real-time monitoring of the processing process.

A “random-type” sand–concrete interface shear test was developed based on the sand cone method, with a focus on the most commonly encountered triangular contact surface morphology. A “regular-type” triangular interface, matched in roughness to the “random-type”, was meticulously designed. This “regular-type” interface features five distinct triangular groove inclinations: 18°, 33°, 50°, 70°, and 90°. A series of sand–concrete interface direct shear tests were conducted under consistent compaction conditions to investigate the impact of varying compaction densities and triangular groove inclinations on the shear strength at the interface. Particle flow simulations were utilized to examine the morphology of the shear band and the characteristics of particle migration influenced by the triangular contact surface. This analysis is aimed at elucidating the influence of the inclination of the triangular groove on the shear failure mechanism at the sand–concrete interface. The findings indicate that: (1) The morphology of the interface significantly impacts the shear strength of the sand–concrete interface, while the shape of the stress-displacement curve experiences minimal alteration. (2) At smaller inclination angles, particle contact forces are arranged in a wave-like configuration around the sawtooth tip, resulting in a non-uniform stress distribution along the sawtooth slope. However, as the inclination angle grows, the stress concentration at the sawtooth tip diminishes, and the stress distribution across the sawtooth slope becomes more consistent. (3) Particle migration is significantly influenced by the sawtooth’s inclination angle. At lower angles, particles climb the structure’s tip through sliding and rolling. As the angle increases, particle motion shifts to shear, accompanied by a transition in friction from surface friction to internal shear friction. This leads to the formation of a wider shear band and an increase in shear strength.

The mechanical properties of pile–soil interfaces directly affect the bearing capacity of pile foundations. In this study, the effects of triangular groove inclination angles on the mechanical properties of sand–concrete interfaces were investigated. Random rough concrete surfaces were obtained through slurry intrusion testing, and the roughness of concrete surfaces was evaluated based on the sand cone method. According to the roughness of random concrete surfaces, five regular concrete surfaces with different triangular groove inclination angles were constructed. A series of direct shear tests between (i) sand and random concrete surface, (ii) sand and regular concrete surface, as well as (iii) sand and smooth concrete surface were performed. Moreover, a direct shear test of natural sand was conducted. Lastly, a shear strength model considering the triangular groove inclination angle of sand–concrete interfaces was established, and the shear failure mechanism of interfaces was discussed. The results firstly indicated that the shear stress-displacement curves of random rough concrete surfaces were ideal elastic-plastic curves; and the regular rough concrete surfaces were found to incur strain softening under a normal stress of 300 kPa. Secondly, the shear strength of sand–concrete interfaces increased with the increase in groove inclination angle of concrete interfaces. Thirdly, sand was found to achieve the highest shear strength, while sand–smooth concrete interfaces proved to attain the lowest. Lastly, the internal friction angle value of random concrete interfaces was shown to range between the values of concrete surfaces with triangular groove inclination angles of 70° and 90°.

BackgroundThymectomy is an efficient and standard treatment strategy for patients with myasthenia gravis (MG), postoperative myasthenic crisis (POMC) is the major complication related to thymectomy and has a strongly life-threatening effect. As a biomarker, whether the bilirubin level is a risk factor for MG progression remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between the preoperative bilirubin level and postoperative myasthenic crisis (POMC).MethodsWe analyzed 375 patients with MG who underwent thymectomy at Tangdu Hospital between January 2012 and September 2021. The primary outcome measurement was POMC. The association between POMC and bilirubin level was analyzed by restricted cubic spline (RCS). Indirect bilirubin (IBIL) was divided into two subgroups based on the normal upper limit of IBIL, 14 μmol/L.ResultsCompared with non–POMC group, IBIL levels were significantly higher in patients with POMC. Elevated IBIL levels were closely associated with an increased risk of POMC (p for trend = 0.002). There was a dose-response curve relationship between IBIL levels and POMC incidence (p for non–linearity = 0.93). However, DBIL levels showed a U-shaped association with POMC incidence. High IBIL level (≥14 μmol/L) was an independent predictive factor for POMC [odds ratio = 3.47, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.56–7.8, p = 0.002]. The addition of high IBIL levels improved the prediction model performance (net reclassification index = 0.186, 95% CI: 0.039–0.334; integrated discrimination improvement = 0.0345, 95% CI: 0.005–0.065).ConclusionHigh preoperative IBIL levels, especially those exceeding the normal upper limit, could independently predict the incidence of POMC.

Abstract Performing divergent C─H bond functionalization on molecules with multiple reaction sites is a significant challenge in organic chemistry. Biocatalytic oxyfunctionalization reactions of these compounds to the corresponding ketones/aldehydes are typically hindered by selectivity issues. To address these challenges, the catalytic performance of oxidoreductases is explored. The results show that combining the peroxygenase‐catalyzed propargylic C─H bond oxidation with the Old Yellow Enzyme‐catalyzed reduction of conjugated C─C triple bonds in one‐pot enables the regio‐ and chemoselective oxyfunctionalization of sp3 C─H bonds that are distant from benzylic sites. This enzymatic approach yielded a variety of γ‐keto arenes with diverse structural and electronic properties in yields of up to 99% and regioselectivity of 100%, which are difficult to achieve using other chemocatalysis and enzymes. By adjusting the C─C triple bond, the carbonyl group's position can be further tuned to yield ε‐keto arenes. This enzymatic approach can be combined with other biocatalysts to establish new synthetic pathways for accessing various challenging divergent C─H bond functionalization reactions.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of DNA methylation-silenced genes in malignant transformation. We screened DNA methylation-silenced genes during methacrylate (GMA)-induced malignant transformation of human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE) by DNA methylation microarray analysis. The methylation status of some identified genes was assessed by a polymerase chain reaction and compared with uninduced control cells. A total of 801, 66 and 30 genes were silenced in 10th, 20th and 30th generation cells; 8 genes were silenced in 10th and 20th generation cells but not in 30th generation cells; 14 genes were silenced in 30th and 10th generation cells but not in 20th generation cells; and one gene was silenced in 20th and 30th generation cells but not in 10th generation cells. The deletion of orphan response regulator CovR reduces the growth rate of Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (S. suis 2). In this study, metabolome and transcriptome profiling were performed to study the mechanisms underlying the poor growth of S. suis 2 caused by the deletion of orphan response regulator CovR. By comparing S. suis 2 (ΔcovR) and S. suis 2 (SC19), 146 differentially accumulated metabolites (upregulated: 83 and downregulated: 63) and 141 differentially expressed genes (upregulated: 86 and downregulated: 55) were identified. Metabolome and functional annotation analysis revealed that the growth of ΔcovR was inhibited by the imbalance aminoacyl tRNA biosynthesis (the low contents of L-lysine, L-aspartic acid, L-glutamine, and L-glutamic acid, and the high content of L-methionine). These results provide a new insight into the underlying poor growth of S. suis 2 caused by the deletion of orphan response regulator CovR. Metabolites and candidate genes regulated by the orphan response regulator CovR and involved in the growth of S. suis 2 were reported in this study.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to develop and validate internally a clinical predictive model, for predicting myasthenic crisis within 30 days after thymectomy in patients with myasthenia gravis. Methods Eligible patients were enrolled between January 2015 and May 2019. The primary outcome measure was postoperative myasthenic crisis (POMC). A predictive model was constructed using logistic regression and presented in a nomogram. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was calculated to examine the performance. The study population was divided into high‐ and low‐risk groups according to Youden index. Calibration curves with 1000 replications bootstrap resampling were plotted to visualize the calibration of the nomogram. Decision curve analyses (DCA) with 1000 replications bootstrap resampling were performed to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the model. Results A total of 445 patients were enrolled. Five variables were screened including thymus imaging, onset age, MGFA classification, preoperative treatment regimen, and surgical approach. The model exhibited moderate discriminative ability with AUC value 0.771. The threshold probability was 0.113, which was used to differentiate between high‐ and low‐risk groups. The sensitivity and specificity were 72.1% and 77.1%, respectively. The high‐risk group had an 8.70‐fold higher risk of POMC. The calibration plot showed that when the probability was between 0 and 0.5, the deviation calibration curve of the model was consistent with the ideal curve. Interpretation This nomogram could assist in identifying patients at higher risk of POMC and determining the optimal surgical time for these patients.

Rye (Secale cereale) is a valuable gene donor for wheat improvement, especially for its resistance to diseases. Developing rye-derived resistance sources is important for wheat breeding. In the present study, two wheat-rye derivatives, designated JS016 and JS110, were produced by crossing common wheat cultivar Yangmai 23 with Pakistani rye accession W2A. Using sequential genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (mc-FISH), JS016 and JS110 were identified as a T6BS.6RL translocation line and a T6BS.6BL6RL translocation line, respectively. Ten newly 6RL chromosome arm-specific markers were developed and used to confirm the 6RL translocation. The wheat 55K single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array further verified the molecular cytogenetic identification results above and clarified their breakpoints at 430.9 and 523.0 Mb of chromosome 6B in JS016 and JS110, respectively. Resistance spectrum and allelism test demonstrated that JS016 and JS110 possessed novel powdery mildew resistance gene(s) that was derived from the 6RL translocation but differed from Pm20. Moreover, JS016 and JS110 had better agronomic traits than the previously reported 6RL translocation line carrying Pm20. To efficiently transfer and detect the 6RL translocation from JS016 and JS110, one 6RL-specific Kompetitive allele specific PCR (KASP) marker was developed and validated in high throughput marker-assisted selection (MAS).

Potassium-ion hybrid capacitors (PIHCs) as a burgeoning research hotspot are an ideal replacement for lithium-ion hybrid capacitors (LIHCs). Here, we report nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets (NPCNs) with enlarged interlayer spacing, abundant defects, and favorable mesoporous structures. The structural changes of NPCNs in potassiation and depotassiation processes are analyzed by using Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Due to the unique structure of NPCNs, the PIHC device assembled using NPCNs as both the anode and cathode material (double-functional self-matching material) exhibits a superior energy density of 128 Wh kg−1 with a capacity retention of 90.8% after 9000 cycles. This research can promote the development of double-functional self-matching materials for hybrid energy storage devices with ultra-high performance.

Abstract Background To compare the surgical status in idiopathic epiretinal membrane (IERM) patients with or without disorganization of retinal inner layers (DRIL) and to correlate with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and clinical data. Methods In 74 eyes from 74 patients with IERM treated by surgery with 12-month follow-up. According to the superficial hemorrhage, the patients were divided into group A (no macular bleeding), group B (macular parafoveal bleeding) and group C (macular foveal bleeding). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) were evaluated for presence of DRIL,central retina thickness and integrity of the inner/outer segment layer recorded at baseline and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was recorded simultaneously. OCTA was conducted at 12 months postoperatively. Main outcome measures is correlation between DRIL and superficial hemorrhage in membrane peeling,and BCVA and OCTA outcomes postoperatively. Abstract Background N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification has been recognized to play fundamental roles in the development of autoimmune diseases. However, the implication of m6A modification in myasthenia gravis (MG) remains largely unknown. Thus, we aimed to systematically explore the potential functions and related immune characteristics of m6A regulators in MG. Methods The GSE85452 dataset with MG and healthy samples was downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. m6A modification regulators were manually curated. The targets of m6A regulators were obtained from m6A2Target database. The differential expressed m6A regulators in GSE85452 dataset were identified by “limma” package and were validated by RT-PCR. Function enrichment analysis of dysregulated m6A regulators was performed using “clusterProfiler” package. Correlation analysis was applied for analyzing the relationships between m6A regulators and immune characteristics. Unsupervised clustering analysis was used to identify distinct m6A modification subtypes. The differences between subtypes were analyzed, including the expression level of all genes and the enrichment degree of immune characteristics. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was conducted to obtain modules associated with m6A modification subtypes. Results We found that CBLL1, RBM15 and YTHDF1 were upregulated in MG samples of GSE85452 dataset, and the results were verified by RT-PCR in blood samples from19 MG patients and 19 controls. The targeted genes common modified by CBLL1, RBM15, and YTHDF1 were mainly enriched in histone modification and Wnt signaling pathway. Correlation analysis showed that three dysregulated m6A regulators were closely associated with immune characteristics. Among them, RBM15 possessed the strongest correlation with immune characteristics, including CD56dim natural killer cell (r = 0.77, P = 0.0023), T follicular helper cell (r = − 0.86, P = 0.0002), Interferon Receptor (r = 0.78, P = 0.0017), and HLA-DOA (r = 0.64, P = 0.0200). Further two distinct m6A modification patterns mediated by three dysregulated m6A regulators was identified. Bioinformatics analysis found that there were 3029 differentially expressed genes and different immune characteristics between two m6A modification patterns. Finally, WGCNA analysis obtained a total of 12 modules and yellow module was the most positively correlated to subtype-2. Conclusion Our findings suggested that m6A RNA modification had an important effect on immunity molecular mechanism of MG and provided a new perspective into understanding the pathogenesis of MG.

Two novel dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory peptides (YPF and LLLP) were discovered from goat milk protein by peptidomics, in silico analysis, and in vitro assessment. A total of 698 peptides (50 = 368.54 ± 12.97 μM and 213.99 ± 0.64 μM) and in situ (IC50 = 159.46 ± 17.40 μM and 154.96 ± 8.41 μM) DPP-IV inhibitory capacities, and their inhibitory mechanisms were further explored by molecular docking. Our study showed that the formation of strong non-bonding interactions with the core residues from the pocket of DPP-IV (such as ARG358, PHE357, GLU205, TYR662, TYR547, and TYR666) might primarily account for the DPP-IV inhibitory activity of two identified peptides. Overall, the two novel DPP-IV inhibitory peptides rapidly identified in this study can be used as functional food ingredients for the control of diabetes.

The yield, quality, and water–fertilizer use efficiency of crops are important parameters for assessing rational water and fertilizer management. For an optimal water and fertilizer system with respect to the nutrient solution irrigation of greenhouse tomatoes using cultivation substrates, a two-year greenhouse cultivation experiment was conducted from 2022 to 2023. Three drip fertigation treatments (T1, T2, and T3) were implemented in the experiment, where nutrient solutions were supplied when the substrate’s water content reached 60%, 70%, and 80%. The frequency of nutrient solution applications is based on weighing coconut coir strips in the morning and evening at 7:00 to determine the daily water consumption of plants. Nutrient solutions were supplied when the substrate’s water content reached the lower limit, and the upper limit for nutrient supply was set at 100% of the substrate water content. The nutrient solution application was carried out multiple times throughout the day, avoiding the midday heat. The nutrient solution formula used was the soilless tomato cultivation formula from South China Agricultural University. The results show that plant height and the leaf area index rapidly increased in the early and middle stages, and later growth tended to stabilize; the daily transpiration of tomatoes increased with an increase in nutrient solution supply, and it was the greatest in the T3 treatment. Between the amount of nutrient solution application and the number of years, the yield increased with the increase of the amount of nutrient solution, showing T3 > T2 > T1. Although the average yield of the T2 treatment was slightly lower than that of the T3 treatment by 3.65%, the average irrigation water use efficiency, water use efficiency, and partial fertilizer productivity of the T2 treatment were significantly higher than those of the T3 treatment by 29.10%, 19.99%, and 28.89%, respectively (p < 0.05). Additionally, soluble solid, vitamin C, and soluble sugar contents and the sugar–acid ratio of tomatoes in the T2 treatment were greater than those in the other two treatments (p < 0.05). Using the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution) method, it was concluded that the nutrient solution application rate of 70% can significantly increase water and fertilizer use efficiency and markedly improve the nutritional and flavor quality of the fruit without a significant reduction in yield. This finding provides significant guidance for the high-yield, high-quality, and efficient production of coconut coir-based cultivated tomatoes in greenhouses.

The combined effect and corresponding mechanism of nano calcium carbonate (NC) and aluminum sulfate (AS) on the setting and hardening performance of binary blended cement (ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA)) were evaluated through multiple experiments, including setting time, calorimetry, compressive strength, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The results showed that, as compared to OPC, OPC-CSA binary blended cement exhibited reduced setting time but decreased early strength, which could be caused by the depressed silicate phase hydration due to the fast supply of aluminate ions during the hydration of aluminate-contained phases contained in CSA. However, through the combined addition of NC and AS, the depressed silicate phase hydration was greatly promoted by NC due to its nucleation effect, and the reduced early strength was significantly improved. Further analysis indicates that the combined addition of NC and AS can promote the formation of C-S-H gel and decrease the porosity of the hardened OPC-CSA binary paste. In this way, one promising repair material with rapid setting and hardening properties was prepared by OPC-CSA binary blended cement with the combined addition of NC and AS.

The 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) produced by selective laser melting (SLM) exhibits high strength (1078.8 MPa) but poor plasticity (15.2%) owing to the high cooling rate during SLM, which inhibits the formation of austenite and creates a nearly entirely ferritic microstructure. The dual-phase nature can be restored through solution annealing, which enables well-matched strength and plasticity, but which has not been extensively studied. We investigate the effects of 5 min, 30 min, and 120 min of solution annealing at 1000 °C on the dual-phase ratio, grain size, texture strength, inclusions, grain boundary characteristics, and mechanical properties of SLM-manufactured 2205 DSS. After 30 min of solution annealing, the elongation increased to 32.2% owing to the restoration of the dual-phase structure, the reduction in dislocation density, the weakening of texture, and the decrease in grain size. Increasing solution annealing time also corresponded to a decrease in the ultimate tensile strength (from 831.7 to 787.5 MPa) and yield strength (from 610.3 to 507.8 MPa) due to grain coarsening and the gradual transformation of ferrite to austenite. Furthermore, the mechanism of the transformation from ferrite to austenite was proposed, and it was observed that the transformation of MnSiO3 to MnCrO4 provided nucleation sites for austenite.

In multi-energy complementary power generation systems, the complete consumption of wind and photovoltaic resources often requires more costs, and tolerable energy abandonment can bring about the more reasonable optimization of operation schemes. This paper presents a scheduling model for a combined power generation system that incorporates pumped storage, wind, solar, and fire energy sources. Through a comparison of schemes, the energy regulation function of the pumped storage power station was verified and analyzed. The CPLEX solver and MOPSO algorithm were employed to solve the daily output of a pumped storage power station in the Gansu region under various scenarios. The incorporation of pumped storage power plants has the potential to provide many benefits, including a reduction in operating expenses by about CNY 1.1163 million, a decrease in carbon emissions by 491.24 t, an enhancement in the stability of thermal power by 2.39%, and an improvement in the combined system capability to absorb additional energy. The correlation between the indicators of the combined system and the penetration rate of renewable energy is non-linearly influenced by changes in the power capacity configuration. Ultimately, the multi-objective optimization computation yields the ideal operational scheme for each power source, taking into account a tolerable energy abandonment mode.

MCM8 and MCM9 form a functional helicase complex (MCM8/9) that plays an essential role in DNA homologous recombination repair for DNA double-strand break. However, the structural characterization of MCM8/9 for DNA binding/unwinding remains unclear. Here, we report structures of the MCM8/9 complex using cryo-electron microscopy single particle analysis. The structures reveal that MCM8/9 is arranged into a heterohexamer through a threefold symmetry axis, creating a central channel that accommodates DNA. Multiple characteristic hairpins from the N-terminal oligosaccharide/oligonucleotide (OB) domains of MCM8/9 protrude into the central channel and serve to unwind the duplex DNA. When activated by HROB, the structure of MCM8/9’s N-tier ring converts its symmetry from C3 to C1 with a conformational change that expands the MCM8/9’s trimer interface. Moreover, our structural dynamic analyses revealed that the flexible C-tier ring exhibited rotary motions relative to the N-tier ring, which is required for the unwinding ability of MCM8/9. In summary, our structural and biochemistry study provides a basis for understanding the DNA unwinding mechanism of MCM8/9 helicase in homologous recombination.

Currently, chemoimmunotherapy is the first-line treatment for extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC). However, only 0.8%–2.5% of the patients presented complete response after chemoimmunotherapy. Considering that ES-SCLC is highly sensitive to radiotherapy, the addition of radiotherapy after first-line treatment for ES-SCLC could further improve local control, which may be beneficial for patients’ survival. Prior studies have shown that consolidative thoracic radiotherapy (cTRT) can decrease disease progression and improve overall survival in patients with ES-SCLC who respond well to chemotherapy. However, the efficacy and safety of cTRT in the immunotherapy era remain unclear owing to a lack of prospective studies. Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) has been shown to decrease brain metastasis (BM) and prolong survival in patients with limited-stage SCLC in previous reports. However, according to current guidelines, PCI is not commonly recommended for ES-SCLC. Immunotherapy has the potential to reduce the incidence of BM. Whether PCI can be replaced with regular magnetic resonance imaging surveillance for ES-SCLC in the era of immunotherapy remains controversial. Whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) is the standard treatment for BM in SCLC patients. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has shown promise in the treatment of limited BM. Considering the potential of immunotherapy to decrease BM, it is controversial whether SRS can replace WBRT for limited BM in the immunotherapy era. Additionally, with the addition of immunotherapy, the role of palliative radiotherapy may be weakened in patients with asymptomatic metastatic lesions. However, it is still indispensable and urgent for patients with obvious symptoms of metastatic disease, such as spinal cord compression, superior vena cava syndrome, lobar obstruction, and weight-bearing metastases, which may critically damage the quality of life and prognosis. To improve the outcome of ES-SCLC, we discuss the feasibility of radiotherapy, including cTRT, PCI, WBRT/SRS, and palliative radiotherapy with immunotherapy based on existing evidence, which may offer specific prospects for further randomized trials and clinical applications.

The development of organic afterglow materials with sufficient color purity and high quantum efficiency for hyperafterglow is a great challenging. Here, the authors demonstrate an efficient strategy to achieve hyperafterglow emission through sensitizing and stabilizing isolated fluorescence chromophores by integrating multiresonance fluorescence chromophores into afterglow host in a singlecomponent copolymer.

Abstract A nonlinear finite‐time sliding mode control is proposed in this paper for the governing of complex hydroelectric systems with the finite/fixed setting time. The proposed control method is derived from the finite‐time stability and sliding mode control theories. The finite settling time is calculated and bounded, not depending on the initial conditions of the system. The solution trajectory of the controlled hydroelectric system can reach the sliding manifold in a fixed settling time, regardless of initial values. Based on the Lyapunov theory, the controlled hydroelectric system also converges to a reference state within the fixed settling time. A simulation of a high‐dimensional hydroelectric system verifies the feasibility of the proposed method. In addition, a comparison between the proposed method and the conventional PID method demonstrates the advantages of the proposed method in the shorter settling time and smaller overshoot. The proposed control method allows for the design of a flexible controller and provides an improvement in dynamic performance.
