11. Engineering higher yield and herbicide resistance in rice by agrobacterium-mediated multiple gene transformation

Abstract

The Vitreoscilla hemoglobin gene (VHb), trans-zeatin secretion gene (tzs), and the modified 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase gene (EPSPS), as linked expression cassettes, were simultaneously introduced into immature embryos of the rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars Xiushui-11, Qiufeng, Youfeng, and Hanfeng by Agrobacterium tumefaciens. A total of 1153 transgenic lines composed of 4222 plants were obtained through selection for hygromycin (hyg) B resistance. Genomic polymerase chain reaction (PCR), southern and northern blotting analyses, and other relative tests showed that all transgenes had been integrated into the rice genome and expressed effectively. Approximately 90.2% of the transgenic lines harbored all the transgenes. Expression analysis revealed that all transgenes coexpressed stably in transgenic plants, and the frequency of coexpression was about 85%. Statistically significant increases were observed in plant height, panicle length, total grains per panicle, and filled grains per panicle in transgenic plant lines compared with the control. Our study demonstrates a possible way to introduce different transgenes as linked expression cassettes within a single vector into the plant genome. Abstract

[Cu.sub.2]O thin films are deposited by direct current reactive magnetron sputtering on borofloat glass and indium t in oxide (ITO) coated glass and the effect of oxygen partial pressure on the structures and properties of [Cu.sub.2]O thin films are examined. The higher conduction band of the [Cu.sub.2]O relative to that of gallium doped ZnO (GZO) in the band alignment has shown that the heterojunctions are suitable for solar cell application based on energy levels consideration.

21. Population based study of noncardiac chest pain in southern Chinese: Prevalence, psychosocial factors and health care utilization

Abstract

Aim: Population-based assessment of noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) is lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, psychosocial factors and health seeking behaviour of NCCP in southern Chinese. Methods: A total of 2 209 ethnic Hong Kong Chinese households were recruited to participate in a telephone survey to study the epidemiology of NCCP using the Rose angina questionnaire, a validated gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) questionnaire and the hospital anxiety-depression scale. NCCP was defined as non-exertional chest pain according to the Rose angina questionnaire and had not been diagnosed as ischaemic heart diseases by a physician. Results: Chest pain over the past year was present in 454 subjects (20.6%, 95% CI 19-22), while NCCP was present in 307 subjects (13.9%, 95% CI 13-15). GERD was present in 51% of subjects with NCCP and 34% had consulted a physician for chest pain. Subjects with NCCP had a significantly higher anxiety (P<0.001) and depression score (P=0.007), and required more days off (P=0.021) than subjects with no chest pain. By multiple logistic regression analysis, female gender (OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1-3.2), presence of GERD (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.6-4.8), and social life being affected by NCCP (OR 6.9, 95% CI 3.3-15.9) were independent factors associated with health seeking behaviour in southern Chinese with NCCP. Conclusion: NCCP is a common problem in southern Chinese and associated with anxiety and depression. Female gender, GERD and social life affected by chest pain were associated with health care utilization in subjects with NCCP. Copyright © 2004 by The WJG Press.

43. Meta-analysis of the relationship between cagA seropositivity and gastric cancer

Abstract

Background & Aims: Reports in the literature regarding the relationship of infection with cagA-positive strains of Helicobacter pylori to gastric cancer over and above H. pylori infection alone are conflicting. The aim of this study was to estimate the magnitude of the risk for gastric cancer associated with cagA seropositivity and to identify any sources of heterogeneity between studies. Methods: A meta-analysis of case-control studies with age- and sex-matched controls, which provided raw data on the infection rates with H. pylori and cagA strains of H. pylori as detected by serology or polymerase chain reaction DNA, was performed. Results: A comprehensive literature search identified 16 qualified studies with 2284 cases and 2770 controls. H. pylori and cagA seropositivity significantly increased the risk for gastric cancer by 2.28- and 2.87-fold, respectively. Among H. pylori-infected populations, infection with cagA-positive strains further increased the risk for gastric cancer by 1.64-fold (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.21-2.24) overall and by 2.01-fold (95% CI, 1.21-3.32) for noncardia gastric cancer. Gastric cancer at the cardia is not associated with H. pylori infection or cagA-positive strains of H. pylori. Patient age and site of gastric cancer contributed to the heterogeneity between studies. Conclusions: Infection with cagA-positive strains of H. pylori increases the risk for gastric cancer over the risk associated with H. pylori infection alone. Searching for cagA status over H. pylori infection may confer additional benefit in identifying populations at greater risk for gastric cancer.

44. Meta-analysis of the relationship between Helicobacter pylori seropositivity and gastric cancer

Abstract

Background & Aims: Reports in the literature regarding the relationship of Helicobacter pylori infection to gastric cancer are conflicting. The aim of this study was to identify the source of heterogeneity between studies. Methods: Meta-analysis of cohort or case-control studies with age- and/or sex-matched controls, providing raw data on H. pylori infection detected by serology, was used. Results: A fully recursive literature search identified 19 qualified studies with 2491 patients and 3959 controls. Test for homogeneity found a significant difference in odds ratio between patients with early and advanced gastric cancer (6.35 vs. 2.13; P = 0.01), patients with cardiac and noncardiac gastric cancer (1.23 vs. 3.08; P = 0.003), and population- and hospital-based controls (2.11 vs. 1.49; P < 0.001). The summary odds ratio for gastric cancer in H. pylori-infected patients is 1.92 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.32-2.78), 2.24 (95% CI, 1.15-4.4), and 1.81 (95% CI, 1.16-2.84) for all studies, cohort, and case-control studies, respectively. H. pylori-infected younger patients have a higher relative risk for gastric cancer than older patients with odds ratios decreasing from 9.29 at age @?29 years to 1.05 at age >=70 years. H. pylori infection is equally associated with the intestinal or diffuse type of gastric cancer. Conclusions:H. pylori infection is a risk factor for gastric cancer. The heterogeneity of reported results is caused by differences in the selection of controls, patient age, and the site and stage of gastric cancer. GASTROENTEROLOGY 1998;114:1169-1179
