The aim of the present study is to conduct an evidence-based evaluation of the fraction of cancers attributable to and prevented by exogenous hormonal (i.e., combined oral contraceptives [COC] and combined estrogen-progestogen menopausal therapy [CEPMT]) and reproductive factors (i.e., parity and breastfeeding) in Italy. We calculated the population attributable and prevented fractions combining relative risks and prevalence of exposure in Italian women. Italian cancer incidence and mortality data were extracted from national sources and used to estimate the number of cancer cases and deaths attributable to reproductive factors and exogenous hormones in Italy in 2020. For long-term effects, a 20-year latency period was considered. COC were responsible for 4.4 % of breast and 10.9 % of cervical cancers in women aged 15–44, but also avoided 6.4 % of endometrial, 5.6 % of ovarian, and 2.9 % of colorectal cancers in women of all ages. Overall, COC use prevented 1174 cancer diagnoses and 577 cancer deaths. CEPMT caused 0.4 % of breast cancers at age 45–69. Low parity accounted for 8.1 %, 11.8 % and 15.5 % of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers, respectively (6267 cases, 1796 deaths). Background: Acne vulgaris is a disease in the form of chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicles with multifactorial causes. Acne vulgaris is a very common skin disease with a prevalence of 85% in the age range of 18-25 years. There are aggravating factors that can exacerbate acne vulgaris, including hormonal factors. However, the study about how strong the effects of hormonal factors and on acne severity is really limited. Purpose: The objective of this research is to determine how strong hormonal factors contribute on the severity of acne vulgaris. Methods: This was a cross-sectional retrospective study using secondary data obtained from 199 patients at the Dermatology and Venereology Outpatient Unit of RSUD Dr. Soetomo from January- December 2019. The data were analyzed using SPSS with regression analysis.Result: Hormonal factors significantly influenced the degree of acne vulgaris severity (P-value=0.030). Based on the logistic regression model, it can be found that hormonal factors influence the degree of acne vulgaris by 70% Conclusion: The effect of hormonal factors on the severity of acne vulgaris is 70%.

Abstract Background The testicular descent is a uniquely complex process depending upon multiple factors like growth and reorganisation of the specific gonadal ligaments, hormones, etc., which interplay with each other. Though an unambiguous event, it is still laced with incredulity since the data interpretation were intermingled between different species creating more ambiguity in certain aspects of this process. In order to understand the aetiopathology of cryptorchidism the extensive study of the factors controlling the descent is necessitous. Main body Though testes originate in the abdomen, they migrate to an extra abdominal site the scrotum, which makes it vulnerable to pathological conditions associated with the descent. The hormones that play vital role in the first phase of descent are insulin-like hormone 3 (INSL3), Anti-müllerian hormone as well as testosterone, whereas androgens, genitofemoral nerve and its neurotransmitter calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) influence the second phase. Despite the vast research regarding the complex nexus of events involving the descent there are disparities among the cross species studies. However all these discrepancies make testicular descent yet again fascinating and perplexing. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive review including recent advances which provides thorough coverage of anatomical and hormonal factors in the descent as well as cryptorchidism. Conclusion Though our understanding on testicular descent has evolved over the decades there still has obscurity surrounding it and the studies on the factors responsible for descent are becoming more intense with the time. Our knowledge on many factors such as INSL3 and CGRP is more established now; however, on the other hand the role of androgens still remains speculative. As the knowledge and understanding of the biological process of testicular descent increases it will pave ways to new treatment plans to treat cryptorchidism more effectively.

Background: Acne affects an increasing number of adult females, impairing quality of life, with significant negative psychological effect and social impact. Adult female acne (AFA) is defined as one that affects women over the age of 25 and may persist continuously or intermittently from adolescence or manifest for the first time in this period. It is believed that genetic and hormonal factors contribute to the pathogenesis of AFA, characterized by chronic evolution, requiring maintenance treatment, in some cases for years. The etiopathogenesis of acne vulgaris involves a complex interaction between the main factors such as: genetic predisposition; androgenic hormone stimulation leading to an increase in sebaceous secretion; alteration of the lipid composition; follicular hyperkeratinization; bacterial colonization mainly by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and periglandular dermal inflammation. Materials and methods: Patients having acne of age =25 years were analyzed using a pre devised proforma to elicit trigger factors while the severity was graded using the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS). A detailed hormonal assessment was undertaken that assessed total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), free androgen index (FAI), AMH, 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and prolactin. Result: This research involves 90 students as the sample. The profile of the samples that contain average age, gender, degree of acne vulgaris, father genetic history, and mother genetic history. Statistical analysis of the father's genetic history results in a p-valuel3t of 0.001, which means that the father's genetic history was significantly related (p<0.05) to the degree of acne vulgaris. While analysis between ages results with a p-value of 0.795, age was not related (p>0.05) to the degree of acne vulgaris. Topical steroid use was found to be an important factor responsible for aggravation of acne in our study population. The objective assessment implicated the role of diet in 14.4% of patients with the common foods being "oily "and dairy products. Conclusion: Adult female acne may be triggered by diet, stress, and cosmetics and there is a distinct hormonal milieu that accounts for hyperandrogenemia. We noted high levels of adrenal androgens which have been known to be associated with stress and sleep deprivation. Hormonal and reproductive factors affect the risk for cardiovascular events (CVE) in the general population. Although the risk of CVE is increased in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the knowledge about the impact of hormonal factors for CVE in RA is sparse. Female postmenopausal patients ≤80 years with early RA were consecutively included in this observational study (n = 803) between 1 January 1996 until 31 December 2017. Questionnaires regarding hormonal factors were distributed from the index date. Data regarding CVE were obtained from the Swedish National Health Register and Cause of Death Register. Associations between CVE and hormonal factors were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard regression. Of the postmenopausal women, 64 women had a CVE after RA onset. The time period from menopause to RA onset was significantly longer for CVE cases with higher proportion of postmenopausal women. In Cox proportional hazard regression models, years from last childbirth and multiparity were associated with higher CVE risk. Adjustments for traditional risk factors did not affect the results except for hypertension. RA onset after menopause and a longer duration from menopause until onset increased the CVE risk. Multiparity was associated with higher CVE risk whilst oral contraceptives decreased the risk. Acne vulgaris is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease, which is considered one of the diseases of civilization due to the significant influence of environmental factors on the severity and frequency of these lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hormonal profile of patients before treatment and to assess selected hormonal parameters after treatment. Our first objective was to examine the correlation between the selected hormonal parameters and the severity of acne before treatment. Our second objective was to evaluate the impact of treatment with three therapies, as measured by the selected hormonal parameters and acne severity. Statistical calculations were performed using the R v.4.1.1 statistical calculation environment (IDE RStudio v. 1.4.1717) with a significance level for the statistical tests set at α = 0.05. The results showed that the women in the pre-treatment (T1) and control (C) groups had significant differences in testosterone, androstendione, FAI, SHBG, prolactin, ACTH, and cortisol concentrations. After treatment, there were still significant differences in testosterone, androstendione, FAI, and SHBG concentrations between the post-treatment (T2) and control groups. We concluded that testosterone, androstendione, and cortisol concentrations correlate with acne severity. Acne in adult women may be an important clinical marker of androgen excess syndrome and cannot be considered a transient symptom of puberty. The mainstay of acne treatment is contraceptive therapy (ethonylestradiol and drospirenone). Calcium signaling is crucial for many physiological processes and can mobilize intracellular calcium stores in response to environmental sensory stimuli. The endolysosomal two-pore channel (TPC), regulated by the second messenger nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP), is one of the key components in calcium signaling. However, its role in neuronal physiology remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated to what extent the acoustic thresholds differed between the WT mice and the TPC KO mice. We determined the thresholds based on the auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) at five frequencies (between 4 and 32 kHz) and found no threshold difference between the WT and KO in virgin female mice. Surprisingly, in lactating mothers (at P9–P10), the thresholds were higher from 8 to 32 kHz in the TPC KO mice compared to the WT mice. This result indicates that in the TPC KO mice, physiological events occurring during parturition altered the detection of sounds already at the brainstem level, or even earlier. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social deficits, repetitive behaviours and lack of empathy. Its significant genetic heritability and potential comorbidities often lead to diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This review addresses the biological basis of ASD, focusing on the sex differences in gene expression and hormonal influences. ASD is more commonly diagnosed in males at a ratio of 4:1, indicating a potential oversight in female-specific ASD research and a risk of underdiagnosis in females. We consider how ASD manifests differently across sexes by exploring differential gene expression in female and male brains and consider how variations in steroid hormones influence ASD characteristics. Synaptic function, including excitation/inhibition ratio imbalance, is influenced by gene mutations and this is explored as a key factor in the cognitive and behavioural manifestations of ASD. We also discuss the role of micro RNAs (miRNAs) and highlight a novel mutation in miRNA-873, which affects a suite of key synaptic genes, neurexin, neuroligin, SHANK and post-synaptic density proteins, implicated in the pathology of ASD. Our review suggests that genetic predisposition, sex differences in brain gene expression, and hormonal factors significantly contribute to the presentation, identification and severity of ASD, necessitating sex-specific considerations in diagnosis and treatments. Background: The increasing incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), particularly among women, has prompted an investigation into possible associated factors. The effect of oral contraceptive pill (OCP) usage is debatable, with varying and often conflicting results. It is not confirmed whether OCPs have a protective effect against thyroid cancer or an increased risk., Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of OCP usage among females diagnosed with PTC at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia., Methods: The study included females aged 18 and above diagnosed with PTC. An OCP user was defined as a female exposed to OCPs for at least one month. Data collection involved chart reviews and phone interviews, and statistical analyses were conducted using Excel and SPSS., Results: Among 58 female patients diagnosed with PTC, 29.3% (n=17) reported using OCPs, and 70.7% (n=41) were non-users. The ages of OCP users ranged from 26 to 56 years, with a median age of 44 years. The duration of OCP usage varied from 1 to 72 months, with a median duration of seven months. Additionally, for the non-users of OCPs, the age range was from 21 to 85 years, with a mean age of 46.4 years. The median ages for the total sample, OCP users, and non-users were 43.5, 44, and 43 years respectively. The timing of OCP usage among users varied from 1 to 35, with a mean timing of 13., Conclusion: The study found about one-third 29.3% (n=17) of patients diagnosed with PTC reported using OCPs. These results contribute to the ongoing debate within epidemiological studies regarding the association between PTC and various reproductive factors, including OCP use. Alternate or biennial bearing is an alternating pattern of large and small fruit yield occurring in consecutive years in mango, which is a major issue related to erratic productivity. This bearing behaviour is known to be regulated by internal physiological cues including biochemical and hormonal status of the adult shoots and accessibility to external stimulus that influences floral transition. This study aims to compile evidences to establish biochemical and hormonal patterning in floral transition utilizing standard protocols of colorimetric and transcriptomic studies. Floral tissues exhibited temporal pattern of higher accumulation of chlorophyll (0.40 to 0.99 mg gm-1 tissue in Chausa), total sugar (8.83 to 26.65 mg gm-1 tissue in Dashehari) and phenol content (0.21 to 0.83 mg gm-1 tissue in Dashehari), implying sufficient built-up of these in bud burst stage to be associated with floral morphogenesis. Furthermore higher accumulation of anthocyanins and auxin content with concomitant lower gibberellins in floral flush in all varieties validate the crosstalk among pathways to regulate the outcomes of floral transition. The genes sucrose synthase, sucrose phosphate synthase 1 (log 2 fold change value upto 4.98), ATP synthase, polyphenol oxidase and auxin response factor were found to be differentially expressed in the floral buds as observed by transcriptome data which corroborate the leads obtained by biochemical and hormonal assays. The study gives novel insights into the role of genes implicated in accumulation of carbohydrate reserves and establishment of hormonal gradients, that have decisive role in the flowering processes in mango. Prior studies suggest sex differences in lung cancer risk and a potential role for reproductive and hormonal factors in lung cancer among women. However, the majority of these studies were conducted in developed regions. No prior study has assessed these relationships among Nepali women.Methods: Using data from a hospital-based case-control study conducted in B. P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital (Nepal, 2009–2012), relationships between reproductive and hormonal factors and lung cancer were examined among women aged 23–85 years. Lung cancer cases (n = 268) were frequency-matched to controls (n = 226) based on age (±5 years), ethnicity and residential area. Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is an uncommon and benign vascular disorder characterized by angiomatous, pink-red papulonodular lesions located on the scalp, neck, and peri and post-auricular areas. The exact cause of ALHE being unknown, several etiological factors such as trauma, insect bites, hyperestrogen states, and immunological factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the disease. A few cases of pregnancy-related ALHE have been reported in the literature. In this study, we report three cases of ALHE, which were aggravated during the first trimester of pregnancy, along with their management. The relation between ALHE and pregnancy is discussed with a brief review of the literature.

Purpose To evaluate the utility of fat fraction (FF) for the differentiation of different breast tissues and in various breast tumor subtypes using in vivo proton ( 1 H) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Methods 1 H MRS was performed on 68 malignant, 35 benign, and 30 healthy volunteers at 1.5 T. Malignant breast tissues of patients were characterized into different subtypes based on the differences in the expression of hormone receptors and the FF was calculated. Further, the sensitivity and specificity of FF to differentiate malignant from benign and from normal breast tissues of healthy volunteers was determined using receiver operator curve (ROC) analysis. Results A significantly lower FF of malignant (median 0.12; range 0.01–0.70) compared to benign lesions (median 0.28; range 0.02–0.71) and normal breast tissue of healthy volunteers (median 0.39; range 0.06–0.76) was observed. No significant difference in FF was seen between benign lesions and normal breast tissues of healthy volunteers. Sensitivity and specificity of 75% and 68.6%, respectively was obtained to differentiate malignant from benign lesions. For the differentiation of malignant from healthy breast tissues, 76% sensitivity and 74.5% specificity was achieved. Higher FF was seen in patients with ER−/PR− status as compared to ER+/PR+ patients. Similarly, FF of HER2neu+ tumors were significantly higher than in HER2neu− breast tumors. Conclusion The results showed the potential of in vivo 1 H MRS in providing insight into the changes in the fat content of different types of breast tissues and in various breast tumor subtypes. The etiopathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is partially understood. Genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors and their interactions are considered to play an important role on disease development. The relative contribution of environmental factors to RA development is probably larger than previously thought. The aim of this review is to appraise robust evidence about the role of environmental and hormonal risk factors for RA. We will discuss inhaled pollutants, nutritional habits, infectious, hormonal, and reproductive factors. Objectives/Hypothesis The aim of the present study was to 1) document voice in a large sample of female-to-male transsexual persons (FMT), 2) compare their vocal characteristics with those of heterosexual biological males, and 3) determine hormonal factors with impact on their fundamental frequency. Study Design This was a controlled cross-sectional study. It is the largest study to date on voice and voice change in FMT, and the first to include a control group and FMT who were under long-term androgen administration. Methods Thirty-eight FMT, ranging in age between 22 and 54 years, and 38 controls, frequency matched by age and smoking behavior, underwent a voice assessment that comprised the determination of pitch, intonation, and perturbation parameters measured during sustained vowel production, counting, and reading. Hormonal factors explored were hematocrit, total testosterone level, luteinizing hormone level, and biallelic mean length of the cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) trinucleotide repeat sequence in the androgen receptor gene. Results It was found that the FMT as a group did not differ significantly from controls for any of the acoustic voice variables studied. However, in about 10% pitch lowering was not totally unproblematic. The lowest-pitched (i.e., more male) voices were observed in FMT with higher hematocrit and longer CAG repeats. Lung cancer is a major health problem for both men and women, not only because of the high incidence rate but, more alarming, the high mortality rate. The prevalence of lung cancer in women has been increasing worldwide. In the United States, lung cancer is currently the leading cause of cancer death in women, and this may well be the case in European countries in just a few years. The most important risk factors for the development of lung cancer in both men and women is cigarette smoking. Smoking among women has increased significantly since the 1960s, and, unfortunately, the risk of death from cigarette smoking continues to increase among women. Although epidemiological data remain controversial regarding the increased risk of lung cancer from tobacco exposure in women, there is little controversy surrounding the fact that the biology of lung cancer differs between the sexes. This paper summarizes the explanations for the sex differences in lung cancer, including differences in molecular abnormalities, growth factor receptors, hormonal influences, cytochrome P-450 enzymes, and DNA repair capacity, as well as differences in the histology of lung cancer and treatment outcomes in women. Background: Several reproductive and hormonal factors, like age at menarche, parity, age at menopause, use of oral contraceptives and postmenopausal treatment, have been associated with the risk of renal cell cancer (RCC) in women, but results have not always been consistent. We therefore investigated the association between these factors and the risk of RCC in postmenopausal women participating in the Netherlands Cohort Study on Diet and Cancer., Methods: Information on reproductive history, exogenous hormone use and gynecological surgery was obtained through a self-administered questionnaire at baseline in 1986. After 20.3 years of follow-up, 204 cases and 2280 subcohort members were available for case-cohort analysis. Multivariable hazard ratios (HR) were calculated using Cox Proportional Hazard analysis., Results: Women who reported a hysterectomy had an increased RCC risk compared to women who did not (HR, 1.42, 95%CI, 1.01-2.00). Women with a natural age at menopause between 45 and 49 years compared to 50-54 years had an increased RCC risk (HR, 1.61; 95%CI, 1.10-2.35). RCC risk was slightly and not statistically significant increased among parous women with three or more children and age at first birth before 25 years compared to nulliparous women (HR, 1.36; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.84-2.20). No associations were observed with RCC risk for age at menarche, use of oral contraceptives and use of hormonal replacement therapy., Conclusion: Hysterectomy and age at natural menopause were associated with an increased RCC risk. Other hormonal and reproductive factors and RCC risk were not increased. It is not known whether reproductive factors early in the mother's life influence risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We assessed maternal age at menarche, menstrual cycle characteristics during adolescence, oral contraceptive use prior to first birth, body shape, and body mass index (BMI) in association with ASD using binomial regression in a cohort study of 61,596 women, including 743 cases. Overall, early life factors were not associated with ASD, though early age at menarche (RR for age 10 or less = 1.54, 95% CI 1.18, 2.02, p = 0.0002) and BMI at age 18 of ≥30 (RR 2.03, 95% CI 1.34, 3.08, p = 0.0008) were significantly associated with increased risk of ASD. The etiology of male breast cancer is largely unknown, reflecting its relative rarity. Although a number of previous studies have suggested relationships with a variety of medical conditions, the results have largely derived from case–control studies and may reflect recall biases. Within the large U.S. Veterans Affairs computerized medical care system database, we had the opportunity to access 26 million hospital discharge records over the period 1969–1996 and to relate various documented medical conditions to the risk of subsequent male breast cancer. This allowed us to calculate relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for male breast cancer associated with conditions occurring one or more years after initial hospitalization, adjusted for age, race, calendar year, duration of follow-up, and number of hospital visits. Among 4,501,578 men aged 18–100 years, a total of 642 cases of primary male breast cancer were identified (523 among whites, 119 among blacks). Medical conditions that were significantly related to risk were diabetes (RR 1.30, 95% CI 1.05–1.60), obesity (1.98, 1.55–2.54), orchitis/epididymitis (1.84, 1.10–3.08), Klinefelter syndrome (29.64, 12.26–71.68), and gynecomastia (5.86, 3.74–9.17). Additionally, among black patients, cholelithiasis emerged as a significant risk predictor (3.45, 1.59–7.47). Diseases that have previously been related to male breast cancer risk that were not supported by our study results included thyroid diseases, smoking-related conditions, liver cirrhosis, prostatic hyperplasia, and fractures. After adjustment for obesity, the association with diabetes disappeared, but that with gynecomastia persisted. In multivariate models that simultaneously considered all important medical predictors of risk, significant risks were seen for Klinefelter syndrome (16.83, 6.81–41.62), gynecomastia (5.08, 3.21–8.03), obesity (1.91, 1.50–2.44), and orchitis/epididymitis (1.80, 1.08–3.01). Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) is a focal neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary sustained and often painful muscle contraction, usually producing repetitive movements or abnormal positions of the mouth, jaw and/or tongue. We report on a 30-year-old woman affected with OMD with a 12-year follow-up. Focal dystonia involved an involuntary activity of the lateral pterygoid muscles causing forceful jaw displacement in the maximal protrusive position. These episodes initially occurred during jaw function and increased up to an open-lock with bilateral pre-auricular pain. Dystonic spasms were absent during sleep and were reduced temporarily by sensory tricks. Treatment with botulinum toxin type A (BTX) was performed during three different sessions over a 1-year period. Electromyographic-guided BTX injections into the lateral pterygoid muscles were given with cannula electrodes. Botox reduced the involuntary activity of the muscles. Recurrence and exacerbation of dystonic symptoms occurred during the two pregnancies and completely disappeared immediately after both deliveries with prolonged symptom-free periods. During the last 8 years, the patient had a slight relapse of symptoms during flu attacks, periods of stress and during menses. A synopsis is presented of hormone-cancer relationships as seen by an epidemiologist. Emphasis has been placed on reproductive risk factors and cancers of the endometrium, ovary and breast. Although there are definite parallelisms in this regard the aetiological mechanisms for these three sites may be different. Evidence is accumulating that the protective effect of an early first birth and of subesequent pregnancies on breast cancer risk can be understood biologically in terms of interference with the occurrence of preneoplastic lesions. The immunopathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus has been thoroughly investigated recently, and genome-wide association studies have identified genes statistically associated with lupus. However, the progression to overt disease is dependent on the activation of environmental factors (‘triggers’), among which oestrogen stimulation is prominent. Here we report the case of a mother with long-standing SLE entering into long term drug-free remission following intensive, menopause-inducing chemoradiotherapy for cancer, and the opposite case of her daughter, who developed SLE following the initiation of her menstrual cycle. Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is an uncommon and benign vascular disorder characterized by angiomatous, pink-red papulonodular lesions mainly located on the scalp, neck, and periauricular region. Although the exact cause of ALHE is unknown, several etiologic factors including insect bites or parasites, trauma, hyperestrogen states, and immunologic factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the disease. Only a few cases of pregnancy related ALHE so far have been reported in the literature. Lung cancer in women is a modern epidemic and a major health crisis. Cigarette smoking remains the most important risk factor for lung cancer, and unfortunately smoking rates are either stabilized or continue to increase among women.
