This article addresses the HIV/AIDs epidemic as a human rights issue, to which the right to the provisions of social justice required to alleviate and prevent the diseases should be included, focusing on international concerns over the rise of AIDS in China. The author focuses on the threat this virus poses to Chinese women who are living in a hypermasculine culture, references the factors contributing to this threat to human rights issues, and provides an assessment of the international and national response to HIV/AIDS; results show an increasing threat of infection to Chinese women, gender-specific factors contributing to the risk to women, the response is found to be weak and belated and considered a threat to the social patriarchy, and political reform is found necessary for social justice and democracy.

This article examines the role of gender relations in managing the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Zambia, the precarious position women inhabit concerning health matters and the varying degrees of vulnerability and responses of women to sexually transmitted diseases and other health issues. The author examines generational differences, and differences in marital status and economic security, suggesting that older women who have finished raising their families play an important role as advocats for articulating the health dangers posed their daughters and younger women in general, claiming that they may be the best spokesmen for their communities and families regarding sex education.

This article discusses the threat to economic growth and development and poverty alleviation posed to African countries by the increasing AIDS/HIV epidemic. The author attempts to describe the epidemic, explain its significance and its difference, then focuses on the workings of the poverty/epidemic cycle and suggests that for an understanding of this realtionship international actors need to look beyond monetary poverty.

This article examines the economic stagnation, unemployment and decline of standards of living in African countries since the 1970s and its effects on public health concerns and the management of the AIDS/HIV diseases, and the burden external debts add to governments' abilities to management health care. The author claims that debt services consumes a disporportionate amount of resources which prevent the provision of basic services to the poor, that the structural economic reforms countries are required to impliment in order to obtain help in servicing debts are often at the expense of social expenditures, and maintaining trade rules consistant with the World Trade Organization make it difficult for developing countries to protmote and protect the health of their citizens, let alone purchase generic drugs for citizens; poor privatization schemes for basic services have added to the problem of access to essential services for the poor.
