The ephemeral nature of computer‐enabled historical work is a well‐documented concern within the field of history. The quick pace of technological change often renders digital scholarship obsolete, which in turn encourages historians to retreat to the stable and durable comfort of print, even as digital methodologies enrich our research and expand the audience for it. What has been missing so far in the conversation about digital history is a clear understanding of how it differs from traditional historical products, what can be gained from it, and how we might document the work undertaken using these machine‐based methodologies. Because it is best understood as a process rather than as a product, digital history must have a history of its own to tether it to the scholarly community and to ensure that it endures past the active phase of any project. This article argues that digital historians should catalog their work using a normalized template following the Digital Documentation Process, a guide for producing documentation that is suitable for computer‐based historical scholarship and tailored to its specific parameters. Self‐documentation is beneficial to those who create digital history and those who consume it. It is urgent to establish a field‐wide expectation that digital history will be consistently documented as a matter of course, lest we lose scholarship that has already been produced and forgo the enormous opportunities that computer‐enabled methodologies offer to historians. The current digital historical moment is an opportunity to formulate a new theory of historical practice. Our field's long‐standing passive reliance on the widespread explanation of historical practice as deriving information from "primary sources" is unhelpful, incoherent, misleading, and an active inhibition to new opportunities. Our reliance on an incoherent explanation means our students are not given a precise description of our historical practice but instead learn to imitate us by gradually adopting disciplinary norms conveyed through exemplary models and the critique of work performed. Furthermore, our reliance on a misleading explanation of method means we lack a common terminology with which we all can coherently explain to our peers what we actually do. We know this, and yet we have provided no alternative. The current moment offers an opportunity to provide a theory of the practice of history that encompasses contemporary, traditional, and even ancient historical methods: capturing sources, producing data, and creating facts. Wide acceptance and implementation of a sources‐data‐facts model of historical practice will accelerate student understanding, improve communication with other disciplines, erase the apparent distinction between (so‐called) analog and digital history, and provide a framework for the publication of historical data as a valuable end in and of itself. On the basis of cover art and advertising development at the beginning of the twentieth century, at a key time of periodics publishing History in Argentina (in terms of the offer of growth and diversification), this work analyzes the uses of writer's portrait in Los Pensadores between 1922 and 1924, the booklet with which Antonio Zamora (1896-1976) launched Claridad publishing house. On one hand, the analysis of this peri odics covers, as well as other composition decisions, allows to compare the strategies of both periodical press and cheap book publishers in the 1920 publishing field. On the other hand, different material features such as the choice of images or graphical and editorial decisions lead to give an account of their taking part in the process of author's figure fixing on the book artefact. It reviewed the archival work pieces including Richard Coe's award-winning essay, discussing various special issues published throughout the years. It focuses on history, cares for its most vulnerable, and infuses a field with answers to speculative middles.

The US missionaries Elijah Bridgman and Samuel Wells Williams leveraged authority from extraterritorial printing in South China to rebut the oratorical eloquence of ex-President John Quincy Adams on the First Opium War. They did this by editing Adams's 'Lecture on the War with China' (1841) for The Chinese Repository that they published monthly from Guangzhou, Macao, and Hong Kong. Adams presents the British as righteous Christians defending 'free trade' from pagan China. The missionaries' editorial strategies challenged Adams on points of fact to signal disagreement with him over the moral implications of opium smuggling and China's status under international law. An essay is presented which discusses significant contributions of historian David F. Schmitz to the analysis of U.S. foreign relations historiography. It explored his criticisms on U.S. foreign policy implementation by then U.S. President Richard Nixon, his publication of books about the Vietnam War such as "Richard Nixon and the Vietnam War: The End of the American Century" and "The Tet Offensive: Politics, War, and Public Opinion," and his outlook on the outcome of the Vietnam War.

The article describes the geographic information systems (GIS) which provide a way to display, access and research the interdisciplinary map and pictorial collection. The complete collection management of the maps and pictorial documents of the national production, covering acquisition, cataloging, preservation, and access, is done by the National and University Library (NUL) of Slovenia. Rare articles like the atlases and maps published before the mid-eighteenth century are also included in the map collection. Compiling and organizing information from diverse sources according to geographical location GIS has provided a useful framework for organizing a digital archive. The software application format Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) was used. A case study was conducted which concluded that GIS has the possibility creating a virtual collection of diverse materials from the Map and Pictorial Collection of NUL. Traditionally static prints are displayed and linked by GIS. Slovenian history in the mid-nineteenth century, a time when Slovenian national perception was growing, is presented in the site.

St. Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, came to India by ship following the sea routes. While some historians also believe that St. Thomas came to India by crossing Asia Minor West Taxila, north Thatta, and afterwards, he settled in India. There is a consensus among historians that St. Thomas first reached Taxila which was then ruled by a Buddhist king, Gonophores. All of the historians relate the meeting of St. Thomas met with Gonophores. According to the current historical publications, it was in the 3rd century when Christians reached India and settled in the North West and they were called Thomai or Christians of St. Thomas while they are named as Thomai in the present day. In 72 A.D Hindu Brahmins martyred St. Thomas in Mylapore and now the Shrine of St. Thomas is situated in Chennai, India. Thousands of people come to Chennai and visit his shrine. The shrine of St. Thomas is the evidence of Christian presence in India in the 1st century. A king, Kanishka, attacked Taxila; he plundered, devastated and robbed the people, causing ruin. This forced the early Christian settlers to disperse and migrate towards Northern Punjab and Central India. Though Mughal Empire governed the Subcontinent for 200 years yet in this long period they were unable to affect the Hinduism and Christianity. Islam is considered as minority during the period of Mughal Empire. During the period of Mughal Empire some Muslim Emperor forced the Punjabi Christians to enter the fold of Islam and many Christians accepted Islam and those who did not, were targeted and scattered. Four studies examined whether residential mobility ( RM) leads people to view objects as disposable and, in turn, view social ties as disposable. Study 1 showed that tendencies to dispose of objects and social ties are related. Study 2 demonstrated that a history of RM increases the willingness to dispose of objects and, through that, dispose of social ties. Study 3 showed that increasing the sense of RM increases the willingness to dispose of objects and, through this, dispose of social ties. Study 4 showed that the relational aspect of RM is crucial in affecting relational disposability. Our findings extend research on RM and support Lewin's (1936) conceptualization of mobility being associated with ease of disposing social ties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The History Manifesto invites historians to consider the social and political responsibilities attached to their profession. This general concern is equally meaningful for the field of history and for the history and philosophy of science and technology. The specific concerns that motivate Jo Guldi and David Armitage lead them to advocate the "longue durée" and to insist primarily on social inequality, climate change, and governance. The concern on which this response to The History Manifesto centers is historians' social responsibility in the waging of wars and their ethical responsibility at least not to contribute to mounting tensions. For the historian Lucien Febvre, in the immediate aftermath of World War II, a history of science and culture practiced in a certain way had a specific part to play in this regard. Febvre's practice of long-term history differed from Fernand Braudel's approach to the longue durée, in the tradition of which Guldi and Armitage situate their manifesto. This essay suggests that a historical approach to long-term history, sensitive to the concern Febvre voiced, might be helpful. It argues that long-term histories of science and technology practiced in a certain way have contributed to shaping collectives that perceive themselves as communities. Making nuts-and-bolts public policy is not--and never has been--the long suit of professional historians, but general historical work, whatever its durée, has done a good deal to shape discourse on public issues. Jo Guldi and David Armitage neglect that fact, as well as the opinion-shaping influence of history conveyed via nonprint media. They also ignore the large body of scholarship produced in all media during recent decades in the history of science, technology, and science-related medicine (SciTech), even though SciTech itself looms enormously large in the modern era as an instrument of national and international security, a driver of the economy, and a transformer of medicine, public health, and the environment. Much of this scholarship, even though of short durée, can illuminate salient contemporary issues, including innovation; patronage and practice; government and policy; imperialism and globalization; intellectual property; science and religion; and human rights, environment, energy, and disasters. This article analyses publication trends in the field of history in early modern Britain and North America in 1470-1800, based on English Short- Title Catalogue (ESTC) data.2 Its major contribution is to demonstrate the potential of digitized library catalogues as an essential scholastic tool and part of reproducible research. We also introduce a novel way of quantitatively analysing a particular trend in book production, namely the publishing of works in the field of history. The study is also our first experimental analysis of paper consumption in early modern book production, and demonstrates in practice the importance of open-science principles for library and information science. Three main research questions are addressed: 1) who wrote history; 2) where history was published; and 3) how publishing changed over time in early modern Britain and North America. In terms of our main findings we demonstrate that the average book size of history publications decreased over time, and that the octavo-sized book was the rising star in the eighteenth century, which is a true indication of expanding audiences. The article also compares different aspects of the most popular writers on history, such as Edmund Burke and David Hume. Although focusing on history, these findings may reflect more widespread publishing trends in the early modern era. We show how some of the key questions in this field can be addressed through the quantitative analysis of large-scale bibliographic data collections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay explores the ontological perspective embedded in current scholarship, particularly the ways it interprets and categorizes unfamiliar things of indigenous American origin. I review the notion of representation, a term ubiquitous in art historical writing (and in other disciplines as well) and one that is generally considered descriptive rather than evaluative, but which tacitly converts indigenous things into not just art, but more fundamentally into signifiers. Because this conversion alters the very things it is deployed to understand and explain, insisting on a substitutive relationship between materials and ideas, rather than recognizing a necessary indivisibility, it actually participates in an on-going conquest—a conquest of perception. The Victoria County History (VCH) was founded in 1899 as a national organisation looking to prepare histories of each county. A county committee was formed for Yorkshire, and work began on volumes of general essays about the county, published 1907–14, and then on topographical entries for the individual ridings. This article looks at the setting up of the VCH in Yorkshire, work on the general volumes and the two North Riding topographical volumes published in 1914 and 1923, and then at the revival of the project in the East Riding and York after 1945. It brings the story down to the present, digital age, and was originally prepared in conjunction with the publication in 2012 of the most recent volume on the East Riding, covering Great Driffield and its townships.

Since the late nineteenth century several projects for the publication of county and regional history have envisaged a series with complete national coverage (referring here to England only). They have met with varying degrees of success, both in terms of completeness and of quality. Their inspiration has been variously academic or commercial, sometimes ambitiously seeking to satisfy both aspirations, and they have been aimed at different markets. This paper reviews these various series insofar as they have concerned the seven northern counties, seeking to assess their value and to consider both contemporary responses and retrospective appraisals of their merits and defects. This essay argues that "The Chronicle History of Henry the Fifth" (published in quarto in 1600, 1602, and 1619) was an abbreviated version of Shakespeare's play prepared for a readership interested in chronicle abridgments and other genres of history books. Critical consensus now identifies the Quarto, less than half the length of the Folio version we read and see performed today, as a reduced text prepared for the theater. This essay considers a range of materials that contest this performance hypothesis: abridged chronicles, popular histories, news reports, as well as title-pages and paratextual matter from other books based on British history. By situating the early quartos of "Henry V" with these lesser known products of the London book market, I show that early modern publishers and authors shaped a variety of play texts as "chronicle histories" in order to introduce them to a broader market of readers. What emerges from analysis of this evidence is a different view of Q "Henry V": a playbook that owes its existence not to theatrical abridgment, but to reader demand for history books, a genre that Q "Henry V" helped to redefine. Biography is one of the most challenging, fruitful and also most criticized genres within the realm of history writing. A ‘dark legend’ was built up by Marxists and structuralists to undermine biography's epistemological potential. With the revival of narrative as a privileged medium for historical writing, the genre re-entered the core of the historical field. However, it did so through different approaches, which reveal different intentions stemming from rather antagonistic epistemological stances. While ‘conventional’ or ‘reconstructionist’ historians reassert the genre as an example of a ‘proper’ historical study, postmodern ‘deconstructionist’ historians theorize it as a useful and experimental means for ‘unconventional’ historical writing. The aim of this article is to present an approach not only to the problems and challenges that any practitioner of historical biography encounters but also what its ‘conventional’ content and form might include as an instrument of knowledge. The 2013 Presidential Address by William Cronon, president of the American Historical Association, is presented in which he discussed the impact of the end of the Cold War upon scholarly research funding, the impact of the Internet on history study and teaching, and the importance of storytelling in history writing and teaching.

This article examines the history of American historical societies by focusing on the Wisconsin Magazine of History (WMH), published by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (now known as the Wisconsin Historical Society). The first half of the paper relates the history of American state historical societies and their publishing ventures until the founding of the WMH in 1917. The first American state historical societies were private organizations of elite men, and their publications were meant to notify similar organizations of their proceedings. The advent of public state historical organizations opened membership to a much broader segment of society, but the professionalization of the study of history in the late nineteenth century brought about a more rigorous approach to the writing of history. Throughout the twentieth century, the SHSW and similar organizations have sought to balance an appeal to a broad public and a scholarly approach to history in publications such as the WMH. By examining issues of the WMH from 1917 to 2000, as the author has done in the second half of the paper, one can see how the publication, with audiences clearly in mind, tilted toward one side of this balance or the other in its design and content. The article focuses on the writing of an official history of World War II (WWII) by British historian Llewellyn Woodward and the controversy that prevented the work from being published. The author provides a brief overview of Woodward's career as an academic historian, explains that Woodward was commissioned to write a history of British wartime foreign policy that was to be for official use only, and explores the political significance of British official histories and documentary publications.

It states that for ordinary reader the Internet resources are the main source of knowledge about the past. The transition to History 2.0 has generated a number of problems and practical scientific issues associated with the transformation of historical knowledge into an element of a digitally organized media culture.It mentions that representation of historical knowledge that imparts to it a fundamentally new quality, pulling down the barriers that traditionally separated the academic historians and the mass audience the working notes and a finished scientific text, the word and the visual image, the past and the present are coming into being.

This article compares the ways in which Michel Foucault’s and Quentin Skinner’s historical analyses seek to unsettle the limits on present forms of freedom. We do so by comparing their ways of analysing discourse, rationality and agency. The two authors differ significantly in the ways they deal with these three phenomena. The most significant difference lies in their ways of addressing agency and its relationship to power. Notwithstanding these differences, the historical analyses of both authors seek to problematize the ways in which past thoughts and practices limit contemporary forms of freedom.
