This article examines the debates over historiographical uses of the terms race, racism, and ethnicity in the study of the premodern past. It begins with an analysis of conventional approaches to defining race, which understand the concept to be fundamentally modern and reject uses of the term in the study of the premodern world. Such conventional approaches to historicizing race are predicated on problematically essentialist definitions of the term that preclude comparisons of varying types of racisms that manifest across different historical periods. The article spotlights some of the arguments in favor of formulations of race and racism that allow for comparative analyses of premodern instances of racism, relying on the ideas of scholars working in race theory, philosophy of race, and premodern critical race studies. It also puts forward a working model of racism useful for analyzing examples of race-thinking found in Christian texts of the late antique period, focusing specifically on negative significations of blackness. Broadly, the article aims to outline more dynamic and fruitful approaches to conceptualizing race, racism, and ethnicity in the study of the ancient world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses, from a statistical point of view, the titles of the articles published in Análise Social (from 1963 to 2022), by comparing the words used over these six decades. Starting from the premise that a certain choice of words reflect a diverse set of "textual worlds", which are organised according to different motivations and interests, these words, produced under certain historical contexts and mediated by the work of the journal's editorial teams reveal both the continuity and the thematic changes that shaped its lexicon over time. In the first half of the twentieth century, it took a long time for modern historiographic footnotes to be accepted as a standard practice of Chinese historiography in professionalization. Although the word "footnote" as a foreign loanword entered Japanese and Chinese dictionaries as early as the first decade of the twentieth century, in the 1920s and 1930s, most historical journals did not adopt footnotes as a typical style requirement. In 1928, when Academia Sinica started publishing its flagship history journal, Bulletin of the Institute of History and Philology, footnote style was not required. However, some linguists and archaeologists published their papers in this journal with modern footnotes. Gradually, this practice was also accepted by historians. Though many scholars published their works with footnotes in the West, once they returned to Japan, the vertically printed publications pushed them back to the Japanese tradition of no footnotes. However, since the 1930s, footnotes have been accepted more widely. In the 1950s, with the publication of state-sponsored history journals, the modern academic style with footnotes was gradually established. Marxist historians played a vital role in accepting and implementing footnotes by citing classical Marxist works in a standard format to guarantee quotation accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work aims to describe the emergence of the Centro de Historia de Manizales as an institutional space whose purpose was to promote studies on regional history during the second decade of the 20th century. The text explains were the conditions that facilitated the creation and existence of this Centro in a space far from the Colombian capital and analyze the reasons to explain why the main achievement of this Project, the Archivo Historial journal (1918-1934), did not could have continuity. However, some aspects of regional and local history are mentioned in that magazine that was novel at the time. To carry out this research, I reviewed the copies of the journal, I analyzed the guidelines of the Academia Nacional de Historia during the period of existence of the publication. In particular, I paid attention to the guidelines on the creation of Centro de Historia outside the capital of the country. I also examined the personal correspondence of Enrique Otero D'Acosta, one of the main actors in the case of the journal Archivo Historial. In this way, the work studies aspects related to the writing of regional history in Colombia that had not been previously analyzed, such as the emergence of the Centro, the policies that gave rise to it, and the emergence of a publication such as the Center's journal. The article presents the research areas and the scientific, popularization, and organizational achievements of the members of the History of Education and Anthropology of Culture Research Unit in 2021. Their research spans from the mid-18th century to almost modern times and focuses on the relations between numerous forms of education and the intellectual and cultural level of various social groups in particular historical periods. The intention of the Unit members is also to combine the history of education with the history of science (broadly understood) and thus to study the impact of scientific achievements, mainly in the field of humanities and social sciences, on the extent of social knowledge and social need for access to culture. An index to the December 2021 edition of the scholarly periodical "American Historical Review" is presented.

This article deals with the internationalization of Italian economic and business historians. We relay on an extension of a comprehensive database (Cioni, Federico and Vasta, 2020) of all articles (more than 10,000) published in the top-5 economic history and in the top-3 business history journals from their establishment to 2020, focusing on 209 articles published by 147 authors affiliated to Italian institutions. We focus on both the affiliation of the Italian scholars, highlighting their geographical concentration, and the articles’ characteristics (topic, historical periods, geographical area, use of econometrics). The paper reviews the literature on the so-called classical gold standard with the aim of providing the current state-of-the-art of the debate and to suggest possible way(s) forward in the research on the topic. The paper bridges and expands previous literature reviews appeared from 2006 to 2018 by looking at all articles published in the main journals of the discipline between about 1996 and the end of 2020, as well as running an on-line thematic search for books and studies appearing in history or economics journals. The paper argues that after a degree of consensus around the mid-1990s, positions diverged since the mid-2000s. While some authors qualified and further developed the «orthodox » credibility-based view developed in the 1990s, others explored different directions. These include the role of geopolitics and power as part of the monetary arrangement, as well as the existence of hybrid forms of adherence to the gold standard and the use of «gold devices» as standard and structural policies. The article focuses on updates regarding the publication of the 90th volume of Études d'histoire religieuse (ÉHR), including the transition to two issues per volume starting in 2024 and the launch of the UQAM editions platform for article submission and management. Une tradition d'innovation: Les Annales dans le paysage transnational des revues d'histoire, 1990-2020 Cet essai examine les Annales au prisme de revues d'histoire comparables et, parfois, concurrentes. En se concentrant sur leurs choix éditoriaux, notamment sur les titres de leurs numéros spéciaux et thématiques, il met en évidence la circulation transversale et transnationale des approches et des sujets de recherche. Une dizaine de revues provenant de différents pays sont analysées sur les trente dernières années ; elles partagent avec les Annales une même pratique, celle d'afficher leurs ambitions conceptuelles et leurs choix thématiques par le biais de mots-clefs et de titres. Considérées ensemble, ces revues d'histoire construisent un vaste texte où se trame l'agenda de l'historiographie internationale. De nouveaux thèmes de recherche comme la micro-histoire, l'histoire du quotidien, les identités religieuses et ethniques, les relations genrées et les inégalités sociales ou encore l'histoire globale et le changement climatique sont ainsi mis en circulation dans le dialogue et la compétition. Approche quantitative d'un projet intellectuel: Depuis 1990, les Annales ont publié 1 182 articles. Cette production éditoriale peut être appréhendée de façon quantitative et éclairer ainsi comment s'est traduit – ou non – le projet intellectuel affirmé au cours des années, notamment à travers le « tournant critique ». L'analyse propose d'observer la répartition chronologique des articles, puis de croiser les différentes catégories disciplinaires et thématiques auxquels ils appartiennent. L'interdisciplinarité, centrale dans le programme épistémologique des Annales, occupe une place importante, tout en se heurtant à des limites liées aux contraintes inhérentes aux revues et au contexte de « redisciplinarisation » des sciences sociales. L'approche quantitative permet également de mettre en lumière certains angles morts thématiques, comme les études sur le genre, en même temps que la fécondité de certaines approches croisées – par exemple entre l'anthropologie et l'histoire du politique et du droit. La dimension réflexive et épistémologique de nombreux articles publiés aux Annales reste l'une des clefs du dialogue entre histoire et sciences sociales, tel que le propose la revue. 90 ans d'éditoriaux: Cette section regroupe tous les éditoriaux publiés dans les Annales depuis leur fondation, en 1929, sous le nom d'Annales d'histoire économique et sociale, jusqu'à l'annonce du nouveau partenariat noué avec Cambridge University Press, en 2017. Viennent aussi s'y glisser quelques introductions de numéros spéciaux particulièrement significatives : en tout vingt-neuf textes, d'inégale longueur, qui dessinent le portrait en pointillé d'une revue bientôt centenaire. Leur lecture continue permet de mesurer les innovations, les reprises, les écarts, voire les reniements à mesure que se succèdent les générations et que se renouvelle le comité de rédaction. Inédit en anglais comme en français, ce recueil donne surtout à lire une autre histoire de l'« école des Annales », à partir des positions prises dans la revue, et non dans des textes publiés ailleurs et sans lien organique avec elle. The article focuses on publication of the 200 issues of the magazine Mexican History in 2001 and Historia Mexicana was founded, the publication was a model to follow or surpass what should be a magazine dedicated to professionalize history. It mentions historians Silvio Zavala and Lewis Hanke visited to the geographer Pedro Sánchez, director of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (ipgh), to propose to found a history publication with continental reach.
