This essay examines the reception of the Roman poet Horace (65-8 BCE) in the northern Italian city of Bergamo. Analysis of book inventories, teacher contracts, episcopal correspondence, and other primary sources from the long sixteenth century indicate that Horace was a well-known author in Bergamasque schools, convents, and libraries, albeit always secondary to Cicero and Virgil. The essay also considers the bibliographic history of Horatian works in Italy, and more specifically in Bergamo, in order to understand how the poet was read, printed, and disseminated in the Venetian Republic. The article examines the Venetian model of secret accusations which allow anticorruption revelations based on the reflections of Enlightenment philosophers Cesare Beccaria and Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de la Brède et de Montesquieu. The article provides an analysis of how the just price was litigated in seventeenth-century Venice, Italy. It presents few evidence that Venetians adhered to the general moral principle that the just price should be determined collectively, rather than being a matter for individuals, with litigants attempting to establish the customary rate in any particular sector.

On July the 11th 1419, the Community of Cividale signed a pact of friendship with Venice, often mistankenly considered to be part of the numerous "deditiones" (pacts of willing subordination) that were signed between the Serenissima and several cities of Friuli. After the appearance of the first writings in defense of Venice during the Interdict, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, in close collaboration with the Holy Office, placed under strict surveillance Paolo Sarpi and his collaborator Fulgenzio Micanzio. The documentation preserved in the Vatican Secret Archives and in the Archives of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith thus constitute a precious source of knowledge on the thought, life and political initiatives undertaken by the two theologians. The article goes over these Roman sources and concludes that the relationship maintained by Sarpi and Micanzio with the British Embassy and then with Calvinist theologians did not entail any adhesion to the reformed theology, even generically understood, but was part of an ethical-political strategy aimed at liberalizing the Venetian religious life by compressing the ecclesiastical jurisdiction and simplifying the conditions of faith imposed to the faithful. This essay challenges the notion that the early modern news-gathering practices and networks in Europe crystallized only in the late fourteenth and throughout the fifteenth century, corresponding with the emergence of permanent embassies and state-run postal systems. Inspired by an article published in 2005 by Georg Christ that for the first time problematized this notion, the author offers additional evidence conveyed in the experience of late medieval Venice and Florence, while relying on contemporary chronicles, merchant letters and diplomatic dispatches. Mainly through the analysis of three historical case studies, the essay argues that the existing networks of lower-tier diplomatic representatives, sea captains and military liaisons were already functioning as nodal points of an intelligence-gathering mechanism whose news reports usually ended up circulating in the public sphere. But, as further shown in this study, it was the merchant circles that decisively shaped such a news-gathering network by lending it its own matter-of-fact writing style, as well as allowing it to rely on its own scarsella system of couriers. The study of the osteological collections preserved at the Museum of Anthropology -- University of Padua coming from archaeological excavations dated to the end of 19th and 20th century, is a great opportunity to disseminate still unpublished anthropological data. The aim of this work was the analysis through modern anthropological methodology of the human skeletal remains brought to light in 1983 at the necropolis of Biverone, municipality of San Stino di Livenza (Venice, Northeast Italy). The site, close to Livenza River, began its decadence in the Late Ancient period (4th-5th c. AD) as a result of regional morphological variations and barbarian invasions, that caused an important local depopulation. The study focused on the anthropological analysis of 121 skeletal individuals, trying to better understand the paleodemographic profile, the state of health and the way of life of the ancient population of Biverone. This article examines a corpus of fifteenth-century geographical and epigraphical literature representing the Venetian Mediterranean empire. It was collected and read by Venetian patrician men who were both humanists and part of the political class that governed Venice and its empire. Navigating between literary analysis and history of the book, the article first examines the Venetian legacy of the writings of Cyriac d’Ancona, before investigating the provenance of individual books and their collecting histories. Then, it turns to study the marginalia and annotations in these books by Venetian readers. It suggests that, in its composite construction, this literature provided ways for Venetian readers to imagine their own composite maritime state, particularly its history. Building on recent art historical analysis, I argue that the legitimacy that the aura of antiquity gave to the Venetian imperial enterprise was one of persistence: the Mediterranean empire was a space in which Venetians could encounter a living Greco-Roman imperial past. The aim of the paper is to analyse the functioning of weapons’ production in the province of Brescia in the Early Modern period. The article will underline the delicate equilibrium between productive capacity, international market and military and political needs of the Republic of Venice. In the Republic of Venice, but generally in every time and area, war affected weapons’ production in different ways: in a positive way, stimulating the growth of the Brescian productive system, with internal and external demands that fostered investments. However, when the system was big enough to face both these demands (internal and external), the level of production had to remain high; otherwise, masters would emigrate to find markets that were more profitable. From this point of view, war could be a great limit, because the Republic of Venice restricted the export (of men and products) to maintain inside its borders the know-how and the weapons for its own use. This article presents an examination of material from archives, much of it little known and little researched, on the Italian film industry. The importance of archive sources in pinpointing the processes that bring a film to the screen continues to inform film research. The main documentation explored is that of the Film Finances Archive, only recently made available to researchers. This is considered in tandem with data from the Italian State Archive, and a range of other critical and narrative sources. Of these, particularly significant is the correspondence and autobiography of Prince Alessandro Tasca, a little-known figure, who was the Film Finances representative in Italy. Italian filmmaking from 1950 to 1960 is the main focus because it is given extensive coverage in the Film Finances Archive, when the company was involved in a number of Anglo-Italian co-productions. The field of Anglo-Italian co-productions has been described as an ‘undiscovered world’. It is thus contended that, through exploration of this newly available archive material and other relevant sources, the study offers a fresh perspective on the context of postwar Italian filmmaking. In the Victorian period, Venice was linked to an iconography devoid of any references to the Dolomite Mountains. The connection between the city and its Alpine horizon remained concealed under a veil of haziness. This paper seeks to unravel the conditions under which this haze was lifted. In a context in which classical aesthetic trends and nostalgic codes of travel reminiscent of the Venetian Grand Tour still held sway, Victorian travellers ventured along alternative routes into the wild and rocky Highlands of Venice, pioneering new travel styles that satisfied the desire of experiencing nature in landscape. Josiah Gilbert's 1869 travel-cum-art book, Cadore, or Titian's Country , typified this changing trend. In tracing a Petit Tour, off the beaten track, Gilbert transformed the Dolomites into a zone of prestige centred on Pieve di Cadore, the birthplace of Titian. Despite their uncharted and isolated topography, the Dolomites emerged progressively as a cultural landscape intimately connected to the cosmopolitan aura of Venice and the artistic legacy left in Titian's mountainous backgrounds. Configuring the real Dolomite landscape as if Titian had painted it faithfully, Victorian travellers to Titian Country enacted a ‘cult geography’ through which his paintings could be traced on foot. Rarely could real estate property that belonged to an entail circulate on the market. That property was obliged to pass from generation to generation according to the order established by the founder of the entail, who forbade the sale of any such property. The Republic of Venice, ruled by patricians who often made recourse to entrails, normally impose the respect of this rule. However, it also devised a complex procedure and outlined the conditions for lifting the inalienability clause. This article is a case study of the Venier Palace in the parish of San Vio, in the Venice neighborhood of Dorsoduro, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It show that the existence of several entails belonging to various families was an obstacle neither to the change of property rights (both free or inalienable) nor to the legal sale of real estate properties via permutation and preemption rather than via the market. Even large-scale reconstruction was initiated, although it ended because of lack of financing means. In short, I argue that entails were not sanctuaries for property but rather valuable refuges. Shifting the attention away from the testamentary will and toward the management of entails, this article demonstrates how flexible this inheritance practice in fact was. In so doing, it also downplays the symbolic role played by palaces in the self-image of the Venetian patrician and high-lights how the ruling class and the heirs both regarded the assets' value and preservation as more important to the integrity of the assets' material continuity. A virtually unknown Ottoman manuscript atlas provides new indications about the flow of cartographical and geographical information between Italy and the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the sixteenth century. Internal evidence suggests that the prototype of theMuhit Atlasıwas a Venetian set of globe gores, in some way associated with Giacomo Gastaldi’s world map of 1561. This globe appears to have been lost, but the atlas enables a reconstruction of its main features. The dispute between social versus religious interpretations of anti-Semitism pervaded the whole history of scholarly research. Whereas socio-historical interpretations had underlined the social aspects, current studies on anti-Semitism focus on religious motifs. The thesis that anti-Semitism was a result of a religious conflict, however, is far more alleged than substantially proved by the sources. So it seems necessary to go back to the sources. Therefore this paper analyzes the language of the Venetian Catholic newspaper II Veneto Cattolico/La Difesa from the foundation of the newspaper in 1867 up to the First World War. Just a few years before the term anti-Semitism was coined, Catholic journalists of Venice had created the new semantic of secular anti-Semitism. They turned back to religious issues when they tried to systematize their anti-Jewish sentiments. Thus one can observe in the coverage of the Venetian Catholic journals the invention of an anti-Semitic tradition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses the relationship between imperial expansion and popular visual culture in late seventeenth-century Venice. It addresses the impact of the military on the marketplace of print and examines the cultural importance of commercial printmaking to the visualization of colonial motifs during the 1684-99 war with the Ottoman Empire. Through a broad array of singlesheet engravings and illustrated books encompassing different visual typologies (e.g. maps, siege views, battle scenes, portraits of Venetian patricians, and representations of the Ottomans), the article re-examines key questions about the imperial dimensions of Venetian print culture and book history. In particular, it shows how warfare and colonial politics militarized the communication media, and highlights the manner in which prints engaged metropolitan viewers in the Republic's expansionist ventures. In so doing, the analysis demonstrates how the printing industry brought the visual spectacle of empire onto the centre stage of Venetian cultural life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The visual persona of the itinerant street singer who sang ballads and tales, reported the news, and prophesized future events in the markets and public squares of Renaissance Europe proves an elusive subject for the art historian. This is especially true in Italy for the period prior to the advent of the Commedia dell’arte. Before the late sixteenth century, the primary visual sources that purport to record the appearance of cantastorie, whether as individuals or generic types, are the woodcut illustrations to cheap printed editions of their repertoire. This article augments the limited visual information provided by such prints, casting a wider net to consider the portraiture of elite canterini (poet-musicians) and buffoni who also performed publicly in the manner of cantastorie in the streets and piazze of Renaissance Italy. With a focus on early sixteenth-century Venice, what unites the imagery of performers in the rich and varied corpus of paintings and prints examined here is a common visual and performative topos, that of Orphic poetic inspiration demonstrated through virtuosic improvisation on a chorded instrument. Marietta Morosini’s home contained seven maps among her collection of over fifty images. Elisabette Condulmer displayed a map of the world next to images of the Madonna and Mary Magdalene. Cornelia Bellon also paired her map of Italy with religious images. These women lived in sixteenth-century Venice, the center of the cartographic world. This article assesses women as an audience for cartographic and geographic works by placing maps into their early modern context: the home. This article reveals the importance of the Renaissance pharmacy for the history of the Reformation. Focusing on the case of a Venetian apothecary and physician, Gian'Battista Gemma (1537-1608), the article highlights the role of Venetian pharmacies as sites of religious and scientific innovation, as well as healthcare provision and poor relief. It argues that a pharmacy was one of the most conspicuous and radical centres for unorthodox belief in Renaissance Venice. Drawing on recent studies of medical networks, spaces and identities, and questions related to cultural transfers, the article examines the way in which contemporary apothecaries and physicians integrated their religious pursuits into their professional activities. Like contemporary preachers, schoolmasters and master printers, Venetian men of medicine emerge as a particularly energetic group of cultural brokers who were able to give their reforming ideas broad influence through a variety of social, economic and professional means. In early modern Venice, a wide range and large number of people offered care to the sick. This study utilizes Venice's civic death registers to assess when and why the sick and dying accessed medical care, and how this changed over the course of the early modern period. The detailed registers permit consideration of the profile of medical practitioners, key aspects of patient identity, the involvement of institutions in the provision of medical care, and the relationship between type of illness and the propensity of the sufferer to seek medical support. This study assesses the type, number, density and distribution of practitioners in the city. Recourse to medical care was affected by age, social status and type of illness. A web of institutions increased levels of medical engagement amongst those of lower social status. Recourse to medical care by adults increased to a high level during the seventeenth century, and became near-universal by the end of the eighteenth century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay examines the roles of notaries as intermediaries between the ecclesiastical and temporal spheres in Zadar, then the capital of Venice's Adriatic possessions. My focus is on the economic and social relationships between notaries and urban society during the middle of the century. The essay's main emphasis is not on the city's archbishops, exclusively Venetian patricians as they were, but instead on notaries and their ecclesiastical customers. By utilising the rich archival holdings of the Croatian State Archives in Zadar, I investigate the interactions of members of the cathedral chapter and examine their membership status, economic activities, and their formal and informal processes of exchange, as well as various linkages between these functionaries and the city's inhabitants. This essay examines the rôle of the Venetian state archives in fashioning historiographical trends and in shaping ideas of Venetian identity during the hundred years that followed the fall of the Napoleonic empire. I argue not only that the archives played a key part in the development of modern 'scientific history', but also that the growing recognition of the importance of long engagement with archival sources was significant in obliging foreign scholars to reside in Venice, often 'Venetianising' them in the process. The archives also became a focus of Venetian patriotic pride, a depository of memory and myth, and a statement both of Venice's former glories, and of the city's modem significance to the historical profession. The essay then turns to questions of the périodisation of Venetian history, and rhythms of publication of historical texts. In particular it highlights the importance of Romanin's Storia documentata di Venezia in shaping both Venetian identity and dictating the path of later historiography, arguing that even those who eschewed engagement with archival research felt obliged for decades to engage with a book that put such research at the very centre of the writing of history and the constmction of Venetian identity. It discusses historical and sociological studies of the state's bureaucracies and surveillance knowledges and technologies. The aim of this article is to study judicial procedure and shows that the need to identify legitimate heirs did not emerge solely from state requirements for control.

An essay on the publication of pattern-books for embroidery and lace work, which began in the 1520s. It discusses how these publications connected their fortunes with the evolution of urban manufacture, specifically to transformations in the production of clothing and domestic furnishings, particularly in Venice, Italy. It explores the reasons for the transition from embroidery on cloth, to precise needlework and the refinement of laceworking technique.

This article explores the role of the Şeyhülislam, the mufti of Istanbul and the head of the Ottoman religious-legal hierarchy, as a diplomatic intermediary and introduces the concept of "fetva diplomacy." Anyone of any confession could request a fetva (Arabic: fatwa), a non-binding legal opinion, from the Şeyhülislam. From the late sixteenth century, this openness to all comers led foreign powers' representatives to cultivate close ties with the Şeyhülislam, often seeking his intercession and his fetvas to support their interests. Examining the diplomatic aftermath of a 1624 corsair raid on Venetian territories, this essay shows how fetva diplomacy worked in practice and how the legitimacy and religious bona fides of the Şeyhülislam were harnessed to give Islamic legal sanction to pragmatic political and diplomatic decisions.
