High energy physics experiments are based on complex detectors built with novel techniques frequently configured in multichannel arrays. This complexity creates the need for custom-made related instrumentation and methods not often found in commercial devices. The research activity presented in this thesis aims at developing a distributed High Voltage Power Supply System (HVPSS) network for hybrid Micro-pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) like the ones used in the RICH-1 detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The hardware design was tested in several conditions including test beams at CERN in the SPS H4 beam line and with nuclear sources in the RD51 laboratory. The modular design as well as the reconfigurable capacity of the SoC-FPGA opened the possibility of using the HVPSS as a tool for other experiments. With few modifications, the system was successfully tested as a front-end Data Acquisition (DAQ) system for Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) in the context of indirect measurements of cosmic rays. Additional algorithms were implemented for online particle classification based on pulse-shape discrimination techniques. This thesis describes the basic concepts of the physics behind these detectors, as well as the electronics used for high energy particle detectors. It is followed by the most relevant aspects of the design process for the HVPSS and its modifications leading to the DAQ for WCDs. A description of the specific techniques developed for these applications and the most significant tests and results obtained during the research process are also presented. The article presents an in-depth analysis of epistemic cultures in conflict by exemplifying the epistemic conflict between high energy physics (HEP) and astronomy which emerged after the discovery of 'dark energy' and the accelerating expansion of the universe. It suggests a theoretical framework combining Knorr-Cetina's concept of epistemic cultures with Whitley's theory of dependencies in the sciences system, which explains that epistemic conflicts occur, if the strategic and functional dependency of two incommensurable epistemic cultures is suddenly growing. The pre-history of the conflict is discussed on a micro-level for the two research groups involved in the breakthrough. The analysis of the consequent epistemic conflict on a macro-level reveals that it embraces the preferred epistemic strategy, the collaboration style, the instrumental concepts and the question how social legitimacy can be generated. Mathematical invariances, usually referred to as “symmetries”, are today often regarded as providing a privileged heuristic guideline for understanding natural phenomena, especially those of micro-physics. The rise of symmetries in particle physics has often been portrayed by physicists and philosophers as the “application” of mathematical invariances to the ordering of particle phenomena, but no historical studies exist on whether and how mathematical invariances actually played a heuristic role in shaping microphysics. Moreover, speaking of an “application” of invariances conflates the formation of concepts of new intrinsic degrees of freedom of elementary particles with the formulation of models containing invariances with respect to those degrees of freedom. I shall present here a case study from early particle physics (ca. 1930–1954) focussed on the formation of one of the earliest concepts of a new degree of freedom, baryon number, and on the emergence of the invariance today associated to it. The results of the analysis show how concept formation and “application” of mathematical invariances were distinct components of a complex historical constellation in which, beside symmetries, two further elements were essential: the idea of physically conserved quantities and that of selection rules. I shall refer to the collection of different heuristic strategies involving selection rules, invariances and conserved quantities as the “SIC-triangle” and show how different authors made use of them to interpret the wealth of new experimental data. It was only a posteriori that the successes of this hybrid “symmetry heuristics” came to be attributed exclusively to mathematical invariances and group theory, forgetting the role of selection rules and of the notion of physically conserved quantity in the emergence of new degrees of freedom and new invariances. The results of the present investigation clearly indicate that opinions on the role of symmetries in fundamental physics need to be critically reviewed in the spirit of integrated history and philosophy of science. The Standard Model (SM) is the most complete description of elementary particles and their interactions. It is composed of bosons, integer-spin particles which mediate the interactions, and fermions, spin-1/2 particles which constitute matter. However the SM is still not the final theory. It does not include gravitation as a quantum field theory, it does not offer a clear explanation of what could constitute the Dark Matter and it predicts the neutrinos to be massless. Particle physicists therefore work on different theories Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) to address these problems. For studying deviations from the SM in top-quark physics we use an effective field theory (EFT) approach. EFTs allow us to parameterize the unknown low-energy physics effects respect to some high energy scale. We describe the top-quark couplings in terms of SM and BSM contributions of dimension-six effective operators. In a first study we interpret the charge-asymmetry measurement for the process pp → tt ̄ at the LHC in terms of four-quark dimension-six operators. These kind of operators have enhanced effects in the boosted regime, so we use differential measurements of the charge asymmetry for high values of the invariant mass of the tt ̄ system. In a second study, we perform a global fit of the electroweak (EW) couplings of the top and bottom quarks. We have a total of 10 effective operators describing the left and right couplings of the top and bottom quark to the Z boson, the charged current W tb, the EW dipole operators and the top-Yukawa coupling. We constrain these operators with existing data from SLC/LEP and from the Run 2 of the LHC. Furthermore, we study how these bounds would improve during the remaining programme of the LHC and at a future electron-positron collider. We compare the existing bounds with the bounds that would derive from data collected at √s = 250 and √s = 500 GeV, at the International Linear Collider (ILC). We show that the bounds improve very strongly with the constraints from the e+e− → tt ̄production process. We also study the impact of adding the two-lepton-two-quark operators to the 10-parameter fit. In this case we add 7 extra operators and an extra centre-of-mass energy, √s = 1 TeV, is needed. We demonstrate that a 17-parameter fit is robust.

Bu çalışma, 01-03 Haziran 2016 tarihleri arasında İstanbul[Türkiye]’da düzenlenen 6. Congress and Exhibition on International Advances in Applied Physics and Materials Science (APMAS)’da bildiri olarak sunulmuştur. In addition to PWO and CsI(Tl) crystals, cerium doped LYSO crystal is considered for the electromagnetic calorimeter part of the Turkish Accelerator Center Particle Factory (TAC-PF) detector, because of its high light yield, fast decay time and good radiation hardness. In this work, LYSO crystals arranged in 3 x 3 and 5 x 5 matrices have been simulated against photons in the energy range between 50 MeV and 2 GeV, using Geant4 simulation code. Energy resolutions have been estimated considering the contribution of photoelectron statistics coming from the avalanche and PIN photodiodes.

In this document a search for physics beyond the standard model is presented in the opposite sign dilepton final states etau_h, mutau_h, and tau_htau_h. Data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC providing proton-proton collisions at sqrts = 7TeV in 2011 was used. In this context tau_h denotes a hadronically decaying tau lepton. The search concentrates on strongly coupling initial BSM particles (e.g. gluino, squark), leading to a large amount of hadronic activity in each event. Also the existence of a stable and only weakly interacting particle is assumed, providing a dark matter candidate. With these assumptions, four search regions are defined in the H_T > 125 GeV versus Met > 200 GeV plane, which minimize contributions from standard model processes. The dominant remaining backgrounds in those search regions are caused by dileptonic ttbar decay and tau_h misidentification. Both are estimated from data: The first, by exploiting the similarity of the p_T(nu nu) = Met and p_(l l) distributions in dileptonic ttbar events as well as lepton universality. The second, by employing an isolation side band, from which the contributions of quark or gluon jets misidentified as tau_h candidates are extrapolated. All other backgrounds are estimated using simulation. The background estimation techniques are tested using simulated events as well as background dominated control regions in data. From the first systematic uncertainties are estimated which are validated in the control regions. Ultimately no excess of events in the search regions with respect to the standard model expectations is found. Thus, exclusion contours are calculated using the modified frequentist method CLS. A dedicated simplified model and a generic cMSSM scan were used as examples for possible BSM models. For the latter a combination with the published light lepton channels is performed. The simplified model concentrates on opposite sign tautau final states via gluino pair production. It is parameterized by the gluino and the LSP masses. Using this analysis gluino masses m_gluino < 800 GeV$ and LSP masses m_LSP < 175 GeV can be excluded at 95% CL. Additionally cMSSM scenarios with tanb = 10, A_0=0 GeV, and mu>0 are considered for 100

Based on the full BABAR data sample, we report improved measurements of the ratios R(D) = B((B) over bar -> D tau(-)(v) over bar (tau))/B((B) over bar -> Dl(-)(v) over bar (l)) and R(D*) = B((B) over bar -> D*tau(-)(v) over bar (tau))/B((B) over bar -> D*l(-)(v) over bar (l)), where l refers to either an electron or muon. These ratios are sensitive to new physics contributions in the form of a charged Higgs boson. We measure R(D) = 0.440 +/- 0.058 +/- 0.042 and R(D*) = 0.332 +/- 0.024 +/- 0.018, which exceed the standard model expectations by 2.0 sigma and 2.7 sigma, respectively. Taken together, the results disagree with these expectations at the 3.4 sigma level. This excess cannot be explained by a charged Higgs boson in the type II two-Higgs-doublet model. Kinematic distributions presented here exclude large portions of the more general type III two-Higgs-doublet model, but there are solutions within this model compatible with the results., The concept for this analysis is to a large degree based on earlier BABAR work and we acknowledge the guidance provided by M. Mazur. The authors consulted with theorists A. Datta, S. Westhoff, S. Fajfer, J. Kamenik, and I. Nisandzic on the calculations of the charged Higgs contributions to the decay rates. We are grateful for the extraordinary contributions of our PEP-II colleagues in achieving the excellent luminosity and machine conditions that have made this work possible. The success of this project also relied critically on the expertise and dedication of the computing organizations that support BABAR. A search for lepton flavor violating decays of the tau lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a pseudoscalar meson has been performed using 339 fb;{-1} of e;{+}e;{-} annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II storage ring. No evidence of a signal has been found, and upper limits on the branching fractions are set at the 10;{-7} level.

- Abstract
We present new results of the search for WH --> lvb (b) over bar production in p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root S = 1.96 TeV, based on a dataset with integrated luminosity of 0.44 fb(-1). We combine these new results with previously published searches by the DO collaboration, for WH and ZH production analyzed in the E(T)b (b) over bar final state, for ZH (--> l(+)l(-)b (b) over bar) production, for WH (-->. WWW) production, and for H (--> W W) direct production. No signal-like excess is observed either in the W H analysis or in the combination of all D0 Higgs boson analyses. We set 95% C.L. (expected) upper limits on sigma(p (p) over bar --> WH) x B(H --> b (b) over bar) ranging from 1.6 (2.2) ph to 1.9 (3.3) pb for Higgs boson masses between 105 and 145 GeV, to be compared to the theoretical prediction of 0.13 pb for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with mass in m(H) = 115 GeV. After combination with the other DO Higgs boson searches, we obtain for in H = 115 GeV an observed (expected) limit 8.5 (12.1) times higher than the SM predicted Higgs boson production cross section. For m(H) = 160 GeV, the corresponding observed (expected) ratio is 10.2 (9.0)., QC 20110428

Using a data sample of 89x10(6) Y(4S)-->B (B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC, we measure the B-0((B) over bar (0))-->rho(+)rho(-) branching fraction as [30+/-4(stat)+/-5(syst)]x10(-6) and a longitudinal polarization fraction of f(L)=0.99+/-0.03(stat)(-0.03)(+0.04)(syst). We measure the time-dependent-asymmetry parameters of the longitudinally polarized component of this decay as C-L=-0.17+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.14(syst) and S-L=-0.42+/-0.42(stat)+/-0.14(syst). We exclude values of alpha between 19degrees and 71degrees (90% C.L.).

Searches for supersymmetric partners of top and bottom quarks are presented using data taken by the DELPHI experiment at LEP in 1997 and 1998. No deviations from standard model expectations are observed in these data sets, which are taken at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV and correspond to integrated luminosities of 54 pb(-1) and 158 pb(-1). These results are used in combination with those obtained by DELPHI at lower centre-of-mass energies to exclude regions in the squark-neutralino mass plane at 95% confidence level. We present the results of a search for the radiative decay B -> K eta 'gamma and find evidence for B+ -> K+eta 'gamma decays at the 3.3 standard deviation level with a partial branching fraction of (3.6 +/- 1.2 +/- 0.4) x 10(-6), where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement is restricted to the region of combined K eta ' invariant mass less than 3.4 GeV/c(2). A 90% confidence level upper limit of 6.4 x 10(-6) is obtained for the partial branching fraction of the decay B-0 -> K-0 eta 'gamma in the same K eta ' invariant mass region. These results are obtained from a 605 fb(-1) data sample containing 657 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider.

Weak isosinglet Neutral Heavy Leptons ($\nu_m$) have been searched for using data collected by the DELPHI detector corresponding to $3.3\times 10^{6}$ hadronic~Z$^{0}$ decays at LEP1. Four separate searches have been performed, for short-lived $\nu_m$ production giving monojet or acollinear jet topologies, and for long-lived $\nu_m$ giving detectable secondary vertices or calorimeter clusters. No indication of the existence of these particles has been found, leading to an upper limit for the branching ratio $BR($Z$^0\rightarrow \nu_m \overline{\nu})$ of about $1.3\times10^{-6}$ at 95\% confidence level for $\nu_m$ masses between 3.5 and 50 GeV/$c^2$. Outside this range the limit weakens rapidly with the $\nu_m$ mass. %Special emphasis has been given to the search for monojet--like topologies. One event %has passed the selection, in agreement with the expectation from the reaction: %$e^+e^- \rightarrow\ell \bar\ell \nu\bar\nu$. The results are also interpreted in terms of limits for the single production of excited neutrinos.
