Heritage tourism is an attractive destination for many people because it has its own culture and characteristics. The city of Penang is one of the world's cultural heritage destinations which is listed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO as a cultural heritage destination and has preserved the culture that has existed for a long time. The majority of tourists who visit Penang City come from Indonesia. This research aims to analyze the influence of authenticity on destination loyalty mediated by heritage tourism in Penang City and analyze how each variable influences each other, is related, and has a positive and significant impact to each other. This research uses quantitative methods by determining the sample using the purposive sampling method. Data testing was carried out using the PLS-SEM test to test the hypothesis and the influence between variables in this research. The results of the research show that the authenticity of Penang City has a positive and significant influence on destination loyalty with heritage tourism as a mediation for Indonesian national tourists in Batam City. This shows that the authenticity of Penang City influences tourists' travel interests.

This research explores the potential of Muslim heritage tourism in Sofronio Española, Palawan, as a driver of economic growth and cultural exchange. The study investigates residents' perceived attributes towards this tourism development, focusing on socio-cultural, economic, and environmental aspects. A descriptive correlational design was employed, surveying 381 residents across nine barangays using stratified random sampling. The findings indicate a high level of agreement among residents on the positive socio-cultural impact of preserving Muslim heritage sites, the economic benefits of tourismrelated income and job creation, and the necessity of sustainable environmental practices. The demographic profile revealed a predominance of females (61.2%), a youthful population with 60% aged 18-27, and a high level of educational attainment, with 48.6% having attended college. Despite these insights, statistical analysis showed no significant correlation between demographic factors (age, length of residency, educational attainment) and perceived attributes, suggesting widespread support for tourism development across different demographic segments. The study concludes that while demographic factors do not significantly influence perceptions, the overall positive outlook on Muslim heritage tourism highlights its potential for fostering sustainable development. Recommendations include enhancing community engagement, supporting local entrepreneurship, implementing sustainable tourism practices, and developing a comprehensive tourism action plan. These strategies aim to capitalize on the rich cultural and natural assets of Sofronio Española, promoting it as a premier destination for Muslim heritage tourism. This research provides a foundational understanding that can guide policymakers and stakeholders in creating effective tourism development initiatives that benefit both residents and visitors. Literature on heritage tourism planning in sub-Saharan Africa is underdeveloped. The aim in this paper is to investigate one highly significant heritage site, which is located in metropolitan Johannesburg, South Africa’s leading urban tourism destination. The specific focus is on Kliptown, a township of modern Soweto, situated 25 km south-west of Johannesburg city centre. In South African history, Kliptown is important in the anti-apartheid struggle for hosting the 1955 Congress of the People and the signing of the Freedom Charter. The planning of Kliptown as a destination for heritage tourism and its local impacts for physical area regeneration are analysed. It is demonstrated that at Kliptown, as has been the case with several other heritage tourism projects implemented during the post-apartheid period, the promised developmental effects for local communities have not materialised.

Waste management is a complex challenge for cities in developing countries, including Indonesia. This issue is particularly severe in heritage tourism areas, where unmanaged waste can affect the aesthetics and image of historic places. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the sustainability aspects of waste management using heritage visitors’ destinations and waste management operator areas of the Old City of Semarang. A quantitative method was used to achieve this objective, and data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, field observations, document reviews and analyzed using descriptive methods. The results showed that visitors had positive behavior and awareness regarding waste management. Furthermore, sustainable waste management was implemented but not fully realized across all aspects. This study offered various measures to improve sustainable waste management in area, including waste sorting, collaboration between stakeholders, and policy advocacy on sustainable waste management.

AbstractEconomic valuation studies of non-market goods in culture and tourism have a long and recognised track record. Many studies focus on evaluating well-defined examples such as monuments, institutions or events, leaving the valuation of cultural heritage tourism ecosystems as an important and less explored challenge. This work addresses the evaluation of a cultural tourist ensemble in which factors such as the natural landscape, elements of tangible historical heritage and intangible technological knowledge are integrated, all referring to a specific territorial demarcation, which acts as a driver of tourist appeal. Choice experiment methodology is applied to obtain the value allocated to different attributes of the ensemble by various groups of visitors, according to their origin or type of stay: first, local, national and foreign visitors; and second, the canonical distinction between excursionists and tourists. In general, locals report a greater contribution to preserve cultural expressions while nationals and foreigners do so for tourism services. Tourists report greater appreciation for cultural consumption while excursionists do so for drivers of cultural and territorial brand. Our approach and results can provide a better basis to implement strategies of management and preservation of cultural ecosystems as niches for tourism activity and economic impact. The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the specific application of the Consumer-based Model of Authenticity (C-BA) in historic districts. The paper building upon the C-BA model and examines the direct effects between the variables, as well as the mediating role of tourists' involvement, and place attachment in the connection between, authenticity (encompassing object-based authenticity and existential authenticity) and revisit intention. This study applied the C-BA model to the context of heritage tourism within a historic district. The analysis utilized structural equation modelling and involved 394 samples. The findings indicate that authenticity, influences tourists' intentions to return from a dual perspective. The results reveal that object-based authenticity mediates the relationship between tourists’ involvement and satisfaction, while existential authenticity mediates the connection between place attachment and satisfaction. The study suggests that stakeholders ought to prioritize the preservation of the objective authenticity of the historic district and the provision of high-quality activity experiences.

The study measures the effects of length of stay, share of international tourism and seasonality on hotel rates for sun and beach tourism, city tourism and heritage destinations.. Methodology/Design/Approach --We collected monthly data from January 2021 to June 2023 and conducted a regression analysis to measure how international tourism, length of stay or seasonality differ by destination type and what impact these factors have on ADR. The data refers to the 106 tourist destinations defined by the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE). Findings -- Increasing the length of stay has a positive effect on ADR for cultural heritage destinations. In all types of destinations, a higher share of international tourism increases ADR, but the effect is particularly strong for city tourism. Greater seasonality is associated with higher hotel prices and is particularly relevant for sun and beach destinations. Originality of the research --A better understanding of ADR determinants, depending on the different destination types, is important for hotel managers and those designing tourism policies at destination level. Heritage tourism in Egypt, differentiated by its distinctive ancient wonders and cultural prosperity, has faced numerous challenges through its history, with political unrest, economic fluctuations, and, most recently, the global COVID-19 pandemic. This research paper investigates the dynamic interplay between planned and adopted resilience within the hotel sector in Egyptian heritage sites and their consequential effects on both social and economic sustainability. A quantitative research method was employed to empirically explore these dynamics. A structured questionnaire was distributed to 550 top and middle managers in hotels located in heritage sites, capturing insights into their perspectives on planned and adopted resilience. The collected data underwent rigorous analysis utilizing “partial least squares structural equation modeling” (PLS-SEM), providing a robust foundation for drawing meaningful conclusions. Findings from the research underscore the necessity of aligning planned and adopted resilience to generate sustainable social and economic performance. The synthesis of planned and adopted resilience was revealed to be pivotal in generating sustainable social and economic performance for hotels. This synthesis catalyzes the hotels’ ability to mitigate uncertainties, adjust to changing environment, and ensure long-term viability. This research might contribute to the current literature by suggesting industry-specific awareness for the reciprocal relationship between planned and adopted resilience in the hotel businesses and their combined influence on both sides of sustainability (social and economic). The findings provide actionable recommendations for hotel management, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to enhance resilience, foster social cohesion, and ensure the economic sustainability of heritage tourism in an everchanging environment.

Intangible cultural heritage can be said to be an important component of tourism resources. With the rapid development of society in today's era, tourism development and intangible cultural heritage protection have gradually attracted attention from Chinese society, and in recent years, it has attracted high attention from relevant departments of the Chinese government. Tourism development has a "dual" impact on the protection of intangible cultural heritage, with both positive and negative impacts. The risk assessment of intangible cultural heritage tourism development is a MAGDM problems. Recently, the TODIM and GRA technique has been employed to manage MAGDM issues. The interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy sets (IVPFSs) are employed as a tool for characterizing uncertain information during the risk assessment of intangible cultural heritage tourism development. In this paper, the interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy TODIM-GRA (IVPF-TODIM-GRA) technique is construct to manage the MAGDM under IVPFSs. Abstract User-generated advertising (UGA) is critical to heritage tourism marketing. However, there is a research gap on the impact mechanism of UGA essential elements. Through three scenario experiments, this study explored the matching effects between human elements and review types in UGA of heritage sites and discussed these effects on potential tourists’ online interactive behaviours. The findings revealed that (1) graphics with human elements are more effective when paired with subjective experience reviews, while graphics without human elements are better suited for cultural attribute reviews. (2) Matching effects positively influence potential tourists’ online interactive behaviours, and psychological distance and awe play mediating roles in this influencing process. Our work provides significant insights for heritage tourism advertising marketing and contributes to the tourism advertising research framework and the marketing competitiveness of heritage sites.

The current study aims and issues to investigate and interpret the relationship between cultural heritage tourism and intergenerational social mobility in the Hawraman region of Iran. Due to the conditions and requirements of the research, a mixed-method design has been selected to conduct the study. In the first phase of the research, a survey on the impact of heritage tourism on intergenerational mobility in the Hawraman region was conducted among 354 local community members. Using SPSS software, the data from this section were analyzed. Then, a grounded theory approach was employed to fulfill the aims of the research's second phase. Here, the required data was obtained from 17 "in-depth and free interviews" with native participants whose businesses were related to heritage tourism. The findings in the first part of the research show a significant correlation between heritage tourism as the independent variable and social mobility as the dependent variable. In the second part, 33 sub-categories and 12 major categories related to the impact of heritage tourism on social mobility were identified. The results indicate that heritage tourism has transformed the local economy in a way that has led to the social mobility of the current generation. This study has some useful implications both for policymakers and researchers to have a better image of heritage tourism establishments, their requirements, and impacts in the Hawraman region of Kurdistan province of Iran.

Based on the development dilemma of tourism towns in northwestern China, this study collected the panel data of 10 cities in Shaanxi Province from 2006 to 2019 and used a panel error correction model to investigate the long-term and short-term relationships between heritage tourism and new urbanization. In addition, this paper establishes a regression model of the transportation network’s regulatory effect, revealing the extent of the impact of the transportation network on heritage tourism and new urbanization. The results show that (1) in the short term, the influence of heritage tourism on new urbanization is not remarkable, but in the long term, heritage tourism plays a positive role in facilitating new urbanization; (2) the short-term contribution elasticity of new urbanization to heritage tourism is less than that in the long term; (3) the regulatory effect of the transportation network rectifies the deviation caused by overdeveloped urbanization to moderate development in heritage tourism destinations.

The paper focuses on exploring the virtual collaboration process in the digital preservation project of Rumah Tukang Kahar, a traditional Malay house in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, as a form of cultural heritage tourism. The purpose of the project is to develop an augmented reality interface through mobile app, website, and pamphlets with AR markers, to virtually and physically boost Malaysia heritage tourism economy. This paper describes a year-long virtual collaboration process between multidisciplinary and transnational researchers with various expertise between Malaysia and Indonesia under the Indonesia-Malaysia Research Consortium (I'MRC) initiatives. The paper reflects on the design and product development process and challenges within the virtual collaboration between two universities. The researchers’ involvement in the virtual collaboration process suggests that effective asynchronous and synchronous communication using online textual and visual communication tools and platforms leads to more effective, productive, and meaningful outcomes in research, collaboration, and product development.

The close connection between community residents and tourists in heritage tourism sites strengthens the relationship between people and places. To explore the mechanisms of host–guest interaction and the driving factors of residents’ willingness to participate in tourism in heritage tourism destinations, this study adopts a mixed-method approach combining qualitative research and quantitative analysis. The results of the study show that host–guest symbiosis in heritage tourism destinations goes through four stages: identity qualification, bodily co-presence, common focus, and emotional solidarity. Quantitative research (SEM) reveals the impact of residents’ welcoming nature, emotional closeness, and sympathetic understanding towards tourists on the sense of community belonging, as well as the subsequent response of willingness to participate in tourism. Through the analysis of the host–guest interaction mechanisms and symbiotic relationships in heritage tourism sites, the key emotional factors influencing residents’ participation in tourism are revealed.

This article considers the social and symbolic work of Hisor as a site of Tajikistan’s cultural heritage. Hisor carries with it an array of meanings and represents a convergence of multiple spheres of social life: leisure, education, life-cycle rites and religiosity. Hisor’s flexibility allows it to materialize Tajikistan’s governing ideology as one local project of modernity. This article discusses three contexts in which visitors experience Hisor as heritage: tourist visits to the ‘Old Madrassa’ museum, wedding photographs in front of the fortress walls and pilgrimages to the shrine of Makhdumi Azam. The heritage practices and discourses associated with Hisor offer a complex case study of how the temporal ambivalence of heritage operates on the ground in Central Asia and suggest some of heritage’s utility as a social practice for instantiating cultural memory. This essay demonstrates how Zionist settler colonialism is swiftly proceeding to claim ownership over the Palestinian neighborhood of Wadi Helweh in Jerusalem through the City of David archaeological park, a controversial project premised on disputed Israeli archaeological methods and biblical claims. It examines how guided tours of the site, consisting of tourists with predisposed beliefs and desires to receive more of what they already know to be true, serve to brand the site as conclusively Zionist and Jewish—a central aim of Israeli heritage tourism in Jerusalem. This takes place through a process referred to as "irrefutable divine internalization," and through which Israel's ongoing illegal annexation and occupation of Wadi Helweh is eclipsed, turning tourists' gaze toward Israeli-Jewish ownership of space instead. The protection, inheritance, and innovation of non-heritage tourism projects need to find a suitable entry point so that more people can participate in the inheritance and innovation of non-heritage in order to promote the long-term stable development of non-heritage tourism projects. The article establishes the framework for the ecological chain of non-heritage tourism projects based on the cultural ecological chain and analyzes the problems that exist in the development process of the ecological chain of non-heritage tourism. The optimization of the ecological chain of non-heritage tourism projects is considered a dynamic multi-objective optimization problem, and a dynamic planning model for tourism paths is established. The tourism path dynamic planning model is solved using a two-stage parallel optimization ant colony algorithm and a two-stage heuristic algorithm based on the ant colony algorithm. A simulation experiment was conducted to analyze the data and evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm. The results show that the DACS algorithm can solve the optimal path of the ecological chain of non-heritage tourism projects with an average gap value of GAP between [10.88% and 18.71%]. The IGD of the DACS algorithm in the dMOP test case varies within 0.005, the average running time of the DACS algorithm is 29.72s, and the maximum deviation rate between the optimal solution of the algorithm and the actual optimal solution is only 3.85%. The use of the DACS algorithm can optimize the ecological chain model of non-heritage tourism projects and help the healthy development of non-heritage tourism ecological chains.

With the development of the trend of cultural and tourism integration, intangible cultural heritage has become an important part of the development of experiential tourism. This paper combines information visualization technology to construct a framework for the design of non-heritage information visualization. By constructing a relevant spatio-temporal retrieval function to reduce the redundancy of non-heritage spatial data storage, combined with the base state correction model, the change process of non-heritage spatial features is retraced. GRU is applied as a unit of temporal feature correlation analysis to model the serial data of the degree of participation in non-heritage tourism revitalization. Two gating controls, the reset gate and the update gate, are used to regulate the flow of NRM information. The relationship between participation level in NRH tourism revitalization and experience was focused on in the information visualization design. The results show that the p-value of tourism experience and tourism revitalization is 0.521**, which is the most significant among all p-values, indicating that tourism experience has the closest relationship with tourism revitalization, and there is a significant positive correlation between both. Among the different groups of tourists, most of the experience scores of group C tourists are concentrated in the range of (80,90), while the advanced level of participation brings visual enjoyment to tourists while conveying the cultural spirit and emotional experience.
