Abstract

The latest advances in honey trace contaminants analysis according to 70 articles gathered, mainly from the last 4 years, are critically reviewed, focusing on green and environmentally friendly aspects. Sample preparation protocols for multi-element analysis are slowly evolving towards green chemistry but older methods are still employed. Analytical methods are moving to mass spectrometry determinations, but other spectroscopic methods are also an answer. Dispersive sample preparation methods followed by chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry proved their utility for multi-residue analysis of a wide array of trace organic compounds. Multiplex/multiclass methods development arises as a new field in honey contaminant analysis: They are greener than the traditional ones, as a bunch of families of chemical contaminants can be determined in a single extraction step. The regulatory framework did not follow the analytical procedures evolution. Honey is an animal-origin food, and contamination from other sources is seldom considered. The lack of holistic approaches from a legal point of view menaces public health as honey is consumed during the whole lifetime and hampers integrative analytical developments.

Abstract

Agro-industrial wastewaters from citrus packaging plants are a significant source of pollution. Looking for a solution, lab-scale biobeds were evaluated for the remediation of fungicides from citrus agro-industry wastewaters. They were constructed under controlled conditions, using an 'in-house' designed bio-mixture containing soil, peat and cereal bran (1:1:2). The degradation of imazalil, prochloraz, propiconazole and pyrimethanil was studied individually, as a mixture and in real wastewater from a citric packing house facility. The pesticide behaviour was assessed using a novel validated dispersive sample preparation. The extraction was performed with ethylacetate and a salting out step with sodium tetraborate. The clean-up was performed with MgSO4 and Al2O3. The instrumental determination was carried out by LC-MS/MS in MRM acquisition mode. When studied separately, all the pesticides were dissipated. Particularly, propiconazole showed a 90% concentration reduction after 60 days. Two metabolites of prochloraz of environmental concern: 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and N-formil-N'-propil-N'-2(2,4,6 trichlorophenoxy) ethyl urea were detected, and their chemical structures were confirmed through mass spectrometry experiments. The bio-mixture was also efficient in dissipating the four pesticides when applied together in a single biobed. Real wastewaters from a citric agro-industry containing pyrimethanil and imazalil were tested using the same conditions. Both compounds dissipated 50% and 79% respectively, within 70 days. 28. Holistic food safety evaluation of herbs: methods for the determination of organic and inorganic trace contaminants in Moringa stenopetalaas a case study

Abstract

Moringa stenopetalais considered a superfood due to the many bioactive compounds that it provides to the diet. However, like all edible plants, it is mandatory to guarantee food safety. Thus it is necessary to develop analytical methods that can rapidly and accurately determine hazardous pollutants, to evaluate compliance with food regulations. In this regard, two multi-component procedures were developed trying to cover some of the main organic and inorganic potential contaminants. A microwave-assisted digestion followed by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was used for arsenic, cadmium, and lead determination, while a modification of the QuEChERS protocol followed by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was employed for the determination of 55 pesticides from different families. Both analytical methods were thoroughly validated according to international guidelines. The analyzed samples obtained from the Uruguayan market showed compliance with both, national and international, food regulations. The holistic approach employed in this research is not commonly presented in the literature, thus constituting a novel way to face food safety.

Abstract

Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on the health of ecosystems and humans. While numerous studies have monitored APIs in rivers, these employ different analytical methods, measure different APIs, and have ignored many of the countries of the world. This makes it difficult to quantify the scale of the problem from a global perspective. Furthermore, comparison of the existing data, generated for different studies/regions/continents, is challenging due to the vast differences between the analytical methodologies employed. Here, we present a global-scale study of API pollution in 258 of the world's rivers, representing the environmental influence of 471.4 million people across 137 geographic regions. Samples were obtained from 1,052 locations in 104 countries (representing all continents and 36 countries not previously studied for API contamination) and analyzed for 61 APIs. Highest cumulative API concentrations were observed in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America. The most contaminated sites were in low- to middle-income countries and were associated with areas with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The most frequently detected APIs were carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine (a compound also arising from lifestyle use), which were detected at over half of the sites monitored. Concentrations of at least one API at 25.7% of the sampling sites were greater than concentrations considered safe for aquatic organisms, or which are of concern in terms of selection for antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health, as well as to delivery of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract

The starting point of this work was beekeeper´s and farmer´s concern about the pollution of “Laguna del Cisne”, an important lagoon basin in Uruguay, which is going into a productive reconversion towards pesticides use reduction. Based on previous studies of beehives as biomonitors of pesticide residues, a monitoring was designed and jointly developed. Swarms from the region were captured and hives with new material installed. Five beehives were settled in 8 selected environments: a native forest and agroecosystems involving rice crops, soybean, fruit orchards and horticulture. Five seasonal samplings (January 2019 - May 2020) were performed. The botanical richness of pollen and honey samples was determined (Louveaux et al, 1978). A total of 156 samples of bees (40), wax (40), beebread (36) and honey (40) were analyzed. QuEChERS based multiresidue methodologies followed by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS determinations were employed. From a selection of the most used and toxicologically relevant pesticides, 89, 82, 104 and 103 analytes in bees, wax, beebread and honey respectively were validated according to SANTE/11813/2017 guidelines. LOQs ranged 0.0001-0.100 mg kg-1 . From the 44 pesticides and metabolites found 10 were herbicides, 15 fungicides and 19 insecticides. Except 3 samples, concentrations ranged 0.001 - 0.05 mg kg-1 . Highest frequencies and number of detections were found in wax and beebread in accordance with our previous monitoring study (2014- 2017). Pesticides profile found in each apiary reflected the land use within its ecosystem.
