This study examined the composition, distribution, and origins of rare, Noble, and fissionable elements for the first time in black sand deposits from the Northern Delta coastal region. The findings showed that among the elements under investigation, Fe, Ti, Mn, and Sn had the greatest mean levels, while Hf, Cd, and As had the lowest mean amounts. According to the study's elemental composition, black sand is thought to have economic worth for Ti, Zr, Hf, Sn, Ag, and W. The Zr, Co, Cd, Cu, Hf, V, W, and Zn correlation points to the same source origin. It is clear that the accessory mineral composition in the sediments under study especially the heavy ones controls the geochemical patterns of trace elements. The trace element concentrations of interest show a pattern of element variability related to the mineralogy of the sands, as indicated by the principal component analysis and cluster analysis. This article provides information about Wyoming jade, specifically the two types of rock it is composed of: jadeitite and nephrite. Nephrite is the more common type and is known for its toughness and ability to be carved into delicate shapes. Wyoming jade is found in various mountain ranges in central and eastern Wyoming, particularly in areas where crustal plates have collided. The formation of jade in this region is believed to be a result of hydrothermal fluids interacting with amphiboles and crystallizing rapidly in a tectonically active environment. Sedimentary provenance analysis has rarely been applied to continental rifts, because source-rock terrains are assumed to be uniform and supply systems stable and closely connected to the formation of graben shoulders. Here, we test the suitability of multi-proxy sedimentary provenance analysis to unravel the evolution of a segment of the East African Rift System from its sedimentary record, where an extreme relief has been created and a continent-wide drainage system has been affected. Multi-proxy techniques include petrographic-mineralogical analysis (framework, heavy mineral spectra, zircon morphology, and colour), as well as single-grain garnet geochemistry, Zr-in-rutile thermometry, and geochronological methods (detrital zircon U–Pb ages). Published data are compiled and complemented by new U–Pb detrital zircon data of rift sediments. Because a comprehensive database of basement source-rock compositions from East Africa is missing, published modern river sand compositions have been added to provide endmember source fingerprints. The selected Albertine Rift is surrounded by four main source terrains within the East African Basement, which cannot be separated clearly by individual provenance indicators. Most useful were heavy mineral spectra, garnet composition, and with limitation Zr-in-rutile thermometry showing different metamorphic overprint. U–Pb detrital zircon spectra assisted well in detecting juvenile magmatism of different orogenic events, but repeated inheritance in younger units prevented a strict allocation. Petrographic maturity turned out to be more dependent on multi-cycle detritus as on climate shift. Applying endmember composition to rift sediments, three evolutionary stages of the Albertine Rift could be identified which coincide with basin-scale unconformities. Moreover, we could prove a large, southwest trending drainage network in East Africa during the Miocene, which was destructed step-wise by ongoing rifting. Extreme uplift of the Rwenzori Mountains up to 5109 m could be documented by a specific set of provenance indicators justified by modern river sand. Three main lessons can be drawn from this study: (1) basement units can be only reliably characterized by a combination of provenance-sensitive parameters, and here, the frequently used U–Pb detrital zircon ages are not sufficient; (2) it is possible to define subunits, e.g., individual fault-blocks within the rift; and (3) chemical weathering is unproblematic when applying a multi-parameter approach even in a tropical setting. Detrital U-bearing minerals (e.g., zircon, apatite) U-Pb ages with specific trace-element geochemistry, are frequently used in provenance analyses. In this study, we focus on the Yarlung River drainage in South Tibet, characterized by two distinct lithologic units: The Gangdese batholith to the north (mainly granitoids) and the Tethyan Himalaya (mainly sedimentary rocks) to the south, which plays a crucial role in the erosion of the Tibetan Plateau. To constrain the provenance of the Yarlung River Basin, we performed trace-element and U-Pb age analyses of detrital apatite from the river sands of the Yarlung River and its tributaries. Our findings indicate that the detrital apatite U-Pb age patterns of the north tributaries exhibit main peaks at approximately 40 and 60 Ma, consistent with the corresponding U-Pb age patterns of detrital zircon published. Further, their trace element casts fall mainly in the Type I granite region, also indicating the Gangdese arc-dominated source. However, those of the south tributaries (∼60–20 Ma) exhibit a different age distribution from the detrital zircon U-Pb groups (∼110–150, ∼500, and 1 100 Ma), suggesting that the detailed apatite U-Pb signals can provide excellent constraints on the provenance of igneous and metamorphic rock sources but less so for sedimentary rock sources. Combined with previous detrital zircon data in the study area, our detrital apatite information can highlight young metamorphic events from a complex background (i.e., Niyang and Nianchu rivers), which offers additional constraints on the provenance of the Yarlung River Basin. Combined heavy mineral analysis and detrital zircon geochronology have enabled us to track detritus supplied by the ancestral river systems draining the North American continent into the deep subsurface of the Gulf of Mexico, in both the coastal plain and the offshore deep water areas. During deposition of the Paleocene–Eocene Wilcox Group, sandstones in the western part of the area are interpreted as the products of the Rosita system derived via paleo-Rio Grande material, with a large component of sediment shed from the Western Cordillera. By contrast, samples from wells further east have high proportions of zircons derived from the Yavapai-Mazatzal Province and are attributed to the Rockdale system with sediment fed predominantly by the paleo-Colorado or paleo-Colorado-Brazos. There is evidence that sediment from the Rosita system occasionally extended into the central Gulf of Mexico, and, likewise, data indicate that the Rockdale system sporadically supplied sediment to the western part of the basin. During the Late Eocene of the central Gulf of Mexico (Yegua Formation) there was a distinct shift in provenance. The earlier Yegua sandstones have a large Grenville zircon component and are most likely to have had a paleo-Mississippi origin, whereas the later Yegua sandstones are dominated by zircons of Western Cordilleran origin, similar to Wilcox sandstones fed by the Rosita system via the paleo-Rio Grande. The switch from paleo-Mississippi to paleo-Rio Grande sourcing implies there was a major reorganisation of drainage patterns during the Late Eocene. Miocene sandstones in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico were principally sourced from the paleo-Mississippi, although the paleo-Red River is inferred to have contributed to the more westerly-located wells. The identification and quantification of aeolian sand contributions are essential for understanding the formation of dune fields and mechanisms of modern surface processes. In the present study, we take aeolian sand in the Otindag dune field (hereafter, often referred to as, simply, Otindag) as the research object. The dune field's immediate source is quantitatively identified based on heavy minerals and the Conservativeness Index (CI), Consensus Ranking (CR), and the Consistent Tracer Selection (CTS) method. The primary source area of the aeolian sand was found to be from the northwestern, upwind area of the Otindag (59 ± 14%), followed by the Yinshan Mountain (17 ± 10%) and the lake basin (23 ± 12%). The proposed sediment transport model elucidates that sediments from the upwind of the Otindag are directly transported from the northwest to the Otindag, where they are deposited. Materials from the southern Yinshan Mountains are carried by rivers to the southern edge of the Otindag, where they are subsequently transported by wind and ultimately deposited. The lake deposits within the Otindag also contribute to the aeolian sand supply under the influence of wind. This study demonstrates that the fingerprinting techniques of CI, CR, and CTS serve as successful strategies for conducting quantitative provenance research in dune fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding large desert formation/evolution contributing to regional‐to‐global dust cycles remains a challenge. This study presents the geochemical and Sr‐Nd isotope compositions of 51 surface sediment samples collected from the widespread hyper‐arid Thar Desert in northwestern India. The major objective is to determine sediment provenance for a better understanding of the formation/evolution mechanism of this Great Indian Desert as well as downwind dust contributions toward the Himalayas. The compositionally immature sandy Thar sediments (CIA ∼50 ± 4, WIP ∼49 ± 12, and EuN/Eu* ∼0.80 ± 0.13) are recycled materials derived from the Himalayan orogen and later modified by quartz addition and heavy mineral depletion/sorting processes. The 87Sr/86Sr (0.7259 ± 0.0012 and εNd (−12.5 ± 2.7) in the bulk of these Thar sediments are different from the earlier published compositions of the eolian sand deposits in northwestern India. The subcategories of Thar materials collected from different dune types exposed over different lithologies (Quaternary alluvium vs. Tertiary and Mesozoic sedimentary formations) are geochemically and isotopically indistinguishable, which indicates their cogenetic sources and/or sediment reworking. Thar sediments collected in this study have a predominant Indus origin along with significant contributions from the upwind Ghaggar‐Hakra paleochannels. The Indus sediments are most likely wind‐eroded from the shelf region exposed during the low sea stand of LGM and afterward deglaciation. Considering the new and published data sets, the Sr‐Nd isotope budget of dust deposited in the Himalayan frontal glaciers indicates that atmospheric mineral dust contribution from the upwind Indo‐Gangetic Plain proximal to the Himalayas is at par with dust parcels from distant natural deserts. Plain Language Summary: This provenance study aims to explore the eolian versus fluvial/alluvial mode of sediment delivery to the Thar Desert and its significance to the downwind dust dispersal toward the Himalayas. For this purpose, we characterized several Thar sediment samples collected from a widespread hyper‐arid area in southwest Rajasthan. The sampled area has a variety of Thar dune types and underlying lithologies but a poor river drainage system in modern times. This new data set provides evidence for the Thar surface sediments as predominantly derived from the Indus shelf region during the low sea stand of the Last Glacial Maxima (LGM ∼18–22 ka BP) and afterward deglaciation. The upwind Ghaggar‐Hakra paleochannels also seem to be a significant source of sandy Thar surface sediments in the sampled area of southwest Rajasthan. Further, a literature data comparison indicates a competitive role of downwind sediment source regions (Indo‐Gangetic Plain, IGP) more proximal to the Himalayas at par with the dust delivery from remote natural deserts including Thar. This new data set has the potential to serve as the Thar sediment signatures in regional provenance studies. This paper investigates the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics, as well as the possible sources, of gold, silver, platinum group elements (PGE), copper, and lead found in the beach sands along Egypt's Mediterranean coast. Using scanning electron microscopy and electron probe micro-analysis, this study determines the morphology and micro-chemistry of separated grains to assess their economic potential and how various minerals respond to different transport distances. The analysis reveals that gold grains are of high purity (94.11 to 98.55 wt.%; average 96 wt.% Au) and are alloyed with Ag (1.28–2.32 wt.%) and Cu (0.16–3.15 wt.%). Two types of gold grains were identified, indicating differences in transport distances. Variations in morphology, surface features, inclusion types, rims, and chemistry of the native metals, including gold grains, suggest differences in composition, weathering degree, transport distance, deposit types, and host rocks. The average Ag concentration in gold grains (1.86 wt.%) suggests a link to mesothermal or supergene deposits. Most silver, copper, and lead grains are spherical, with some variations in shape. Silver grains have 71.66–95.34 wt.% Ag (avg. 82.67 wt.%). Copper grains have 92.54–98.42 wt.% Cu (avg. 94.22 wt.%). Lead grains contain 74.22–84.45 wt.% Pb (avg. 79.26 wt.%). The identified platinum group minerals (PGM) belong to the Pt–Fe alloys and sperrylite, both of which are PPGE-bearing minerals. These metals likely originate from the weathering of upstream Nile tributaries surrounded by igneous and metamorphic rocks from Ethiopian and Central African regions, with a minor contribution from the Egyptian Eastern Desert Mountains. This study uses heavy detrital minerals to determine actualistic fluvial and beach sand provenance across the Betic Cordillera (Spain), along the coast from Almeria to Marbella. The Betic Cordillera, primarily composed of metamorphic rocks to the east, supply an assemblage dominated by almandine and graphite, with a longshore dispersal from Almeria to Malaga. Buergerite and hypersthene indicate the provenance of calcalkaline lavas east of Cabo de Gata. The western part of the Betic Cordillera, which comprises the Ronda Peridotite Complex, supplies a chromite and diopside assemblage, with a dispersal from Marbella to Algeciras. Considering these mineralogical suites, the effects of source rock compositions and weathering are evaluated. The heavy mineral species mirror the mineralogy of the source rocks of local outcrops and wider source terranes. The fluvial heavy mineral suites do not differ significantly from those in the beaches except for some unstable species. Unstable species such as olivine, pyroxene, and amphibole do not show evidence of loss because of elevated topography and semiarid climate, which do not affect heavy minerals. Asbestos fibres have been considered an environmental hazard for decades. However, little is known about the attempts of circulating immune cells to counteract their toxicity. We addressed the early effects of fibre‐released soluble factors (i.e. heavy metals) in naïve immune cells, circulating immediately below the alveolar/endothelial cell layer. By comparison, the direct fibre effects on endotheliocytes were also studied since these cells are known to sustain inflammatory processes. The three mineral fibres analysed showed that mainly chrysotile (CHR) and erionite (ERI) were able to release toxic metals in extracellular media respect to crocidolite (CRO), during the first 24 h. Nevertheless, all three fibres were able to induce oxidative stress and genotoxic damage in indirectly challenged naïve THP‐1 monocytes (separated by a membrane). Conversely, only CHR‐released metal ions induced apoptosis, NF‐κB activation, cytokines and CD163 gene overexpression, indicating a differentiation towards the M0 macrophage phenotype. On the other hand, all three mineral fibres in direct contact with HECV endothelial cells showed cytotoxic, genotoxic and apoptotic effects, cytokines and ICAM‐I overexpression, indicating the ability of these cells to promote an inflammatory environment in the lung independently from the type of inhaled fibre. Our study highlights the different cellular responses to mineral fibres resulting from both the nature of the cells and their function, but also from the chemical–physical characteristics of the fibres. In conclusion, CHR represented the main pro‐inflammatory trigger, able to recruit and activate circulating naïve monocytes, through its released metals, already in the first 24 h after inhalation. The early effects of mineral fibre‐released heavy metals in THP‐1 cells, mimicking the immune cells in the alveolar capillaries, were investigated, and by comparison, also the direct fibre effects on the endothelial cell layer. The study highlights that the cellular responses result from the nature of the cells, their function and from the fibre chemical–physical characteristics. The shelf‐margin deltas are the primary 'sources' of interest in siliceous submarine fan source‐to‐sink systems. However, less has yet to be discovered about the roles and effects of the shallow water platform situated on continental slopes. Using the Miocene sediments of the Ledong‐Lingshui Sag in the western part of the Qiongdongnan Basin (QDNB), this paper studies the YC35 coarse‐grained submarine fan that developed in the Meishan Formation (Fm.). The material sources, depositional characteristics, and developmental mechanisms of this fan were investigated. The restored palaeogeomorphology, based on high‐resolution 3D seismic data, shows that a shallow water platform exists. According to geochemical palaeoenvironmental data, the shallow water platform was ideal for forming carbonate deposits in the Meishan Fm., owing to the warm and humid palaeoclimate and the shifting trend in palaeowater depth. Based on the combined source tracing of heavy minerals, coherence slices, and seismic profiles, the shallow water platform and the Ningyuan River source on Hainan Island contributed to the YC35 coarse‐grained submarine fan. Compared to submarine fans formed during different periods, coarse‐grained fan stands out due to its distinct sedimentary structure, rock composition, and microlithological characteristics. Aside from not following the usual Bowmar sequence, there is an excess of gravel and no clear bedding or lamination. A large number of rock fragments, mostly granite and sedimentary rock (carbonatite), make up the rock composition. According to these results, the shallow water platform significantly affects submarine fan material composition. In addition, the attribute slice based on the root mean square reveals that shallow water platforms moderate peripheral deposition. We attribute the development and proximal supply of the shallow water platform to diapirism and forced regression. In the formerly glaciated terrains in the northern hemisphere and countries such as Finland, till is the most common sediment covering the bedrock. Specifically, indicator or heavy mineral studies utilising till as a vector for mineral deposits undercover have been successful. The pyrite trace-element composition from in situ mineral analyses has been shown to be an effective discriminator between different mineral deposit types, and this has led to research using heavy mineral pyrite in till to identify potential mineral deposits in a given area. However, pyrite is easily oxidised in till beds, and thus, alternative methods should be considered. Goethite pseudomorphs are more commonly found in the till sediments as remnants after pyrite oxidation. This study evaluates trace element compositions of goethitised pyrite recovered in the till beds from central Lapland in northern Finland. Intra-grain trace-elemental variations gathered using laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) between the intact pyrite core and oxidised rim demonstrated complex dynamics and variations between different trace-element values. For example, Cu, V and Mn exhibited elevated trace-element values in the goethite rim compared to the pyrite core. However, elemental ratios such as Ni/As and Co/Ni remain stable between the pyrite core and oxidised rim. Therefore, these ratios have the potential to be used as a discriminating tool between the pyrite core and oxidised rim. In addition, nanoscale variabilities using focused ion beam (FIB) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilised to inspect possible nano inclusions within the studied heavy mineral grain. Rift basins are commonly characterised by multiple sediment sources (e.g. transverse and longitudinal) that change over time during different rifting evolution stages. Therefore, tracing sediment provenance to decipher the sedimentary source-to-sink analyses processes in rift basins is important to predict sandy reservoirs. The Xihu Sag in the East China Sea Shelf Basin, particularly its western slope, features large-scale sand bodies of unclear origin. We used petrography, heavy minerals and geochemistry to study sediment provenance in the Eocene Baoshi to Miocene Longjing formations. Our work suggests there are three distinct areas (namely zones A, B and C) affected by different source areas. Zone A, influenced by the Hupijiao uplift, primarily contains metamorphic rock minerals; Zone B, affected by the Haijiao and Hupijiao uplifts, contains igneous and metamorphic rock minerals; and Zone C, dominated by the Haijiao uplift, features igneous with some metamorphic sources, which increase over time, indicating stronger sediment input from the northern Hupijiao uplift. Rare earth element analysis suggests a continental margin and island arc setting, primarily with intermediate–acid felsic rock sources. However, a Eu negative anomaly in Eocene upper Pinghu Formation to the Miocene Longjing Formation indicates some basic source contributions, possibly from a volcanic belt east of the South Yellow Sea. This intermediate–basic volcanic rock belt is located to the northwest of the Hupijiao uplift and may provide clasts for zones A and B through axial channels. These findings indicate that varied sediment sources in the different zones and basin evolution stages with a growing extra-basinal contribution from the Eocene to Miocene, which align with the tectonic shift from the rifting to post-rift period, are essential for understanding the sedimentary filling in this area. Three distinct regions are identified, each influenced by different source areas. Rare earth elements indicate that the tectonic setting of the source terranes was active continental margin and continental island arc. From Eocene to Miocene, there was a growing influence of distal source areas entering the basin through the axial fluvial channels. Source‐to‐sink systems respond to and therefore potentially record topographic and tectonic changes. North of the Tian Shan Belt, the Sikeshu subbasin of the SW Junggar Basin transitioned from active extension in the Triassic to post‐extensional subsidence in the Jurassic‐Cretaceous. Sediment in the Sikeshu subbasin has been shown to be derived from the Tianshan. However, the details of the source‐to‐sink system remain unclear and discrepancies exist between proxy records. The heavy minerals in the Middle Triassic in the Sikeshu subbasin are dominated by garnets. To investigate the garnet sources and decipher the Mesozoic source‐to‐sink evolution, we conducted petrological and sedimentary analysis and detrital garnet and tourmaline geochemistry. We found that the geochemistry of garnets in the Middle Triassic sandstone is most consistent with that of the skarns in the Yili Block (YB) in Tianshan, while the geochemistry of 55%–84% of garnets in other Mesozoic sandstones is consistent with that of garnets in amphibolites in the YB. The geochemistry of the tourmalines since the Upper Triassic is consistent with that of the meta‐sedimentary rocks in the YB and Central Tianshan Block. The dominance of garnets sourced from skarns in the Middle Triassic probably indicates a near‐source point provenance and the broader range of garnet compositions from the Upper Triassic–Lower Cretaceous suggests multiple sources. We infer that the point source changed to multiple sources, which is consistent with the zircon spectra changing from unimodal to multimodal. This change reflects the expansion of the drainage that accompanies a change from active rifting to a post‐rift stage. Honey and bee pollen offer potential health benefits due to their nutrient and bioactive molecules, but they may also harbor contaminants such as heavy metals. This study aimed to assess the content of different metals, including Mg, Al, K, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Cu, As, Rb, Sr, Cd, Cs, Tl, Pb and U, in honey and bee pollen collected from different Abruzzo region (Italy) areas (A1, A2, A3, A4), characterized by different anthropic influences described by Corine Land Cover maps. Differences were observed in the mineral and heavy metal content associated with the influence of biotic and abiotic factors. Honeys were found to be safe in regard to non-carcinogenic risk in all the consumer categories (THQm < 1). A particular carcinogenic risk concern was identified for toddlers associated with Cr (LCTR > 1 × 10−4) in A1, A2 and A3 apiaries. Pb and Ni represent potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks in children and adults due to bee pollen consumption, showing high values of THQm and LCTR. The results suggest the advantages of utilizing bee products to screen mineral and heavy metal content, providing valuable insights into environmental quality and potential health risks. Runoff of terrigenous material involved in the structure of Neogene rare metal–Ti placers of the northeastern side of the Dniepr–Donets Basin (DDB) is determined using lithological and mineralogical methods including U–Pb geochronological and chemical study of detrital zircon. The peculiarities of an assemblage of accessory minerals of heavy fraction of placers, the morphology of individual grains, and the depletion of most zircons in U, Th, Y, and Yb indicate that the material was sourced from chemical weathering mantles, which probably developed after Proterozoic (70%) and Neoarchean (15%) metamorphic rocks. The presence of Paleozoic zircon crystals and a higher U, Th, Y, and Yb content are evidence of the erosion of igneous rocks of the Neoproterozoic–Early Paleozoic trap complexes and Devonian intrusive and volcanosedimentary rocks of the DDB. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and animals, and an excess of or deficiency in Se is harmful to health. Research on the selenium enrichment zone began in the late 1970s in Shuang'an, Ziyang, southern Shaanxi Province. Naore village is only one selenosis area in Shuang'an, Ziyang, China. Different scholars have conducted systematic studies on the occurrence of selenium, its organic geochemistry and biomarkers, and its content and enrichment patterns in this area. This study applied the TIMA (TESCAN integrated mineral analyzer) for the first time to conduct detailed mineralogical work. The minerals included quartz, carbonate minerals (calcite and dolomite), feldspar (plagioclase, albite, and orthoclase), biotite and muscovite, clay minerals (chlorite and kaolinite), hematite, pyrite, and accessory minerals (almandine, olivine, zircon, and apatite) in Naore village, Ziyang, Shaanxi Province. The ATi index (100 × apatite/(apatite + tourmaline)) is used to determine the source of heavy minerals and the degree of heavy minerals' weathering. The content POS (100 × (pyroxene + olivine + spinel)/transparent heavy mineral) of olivine, pyroxene, and spinel in heavy minerals can reflect the contribution of basic and ultrabasic rocks in the source area. The ATi and POS indexes for the heavy minerals in the research area were 91.83~99.96 and 0.01~18.75, respectively, reflecting the abundance of volcanic rock material in their source. In addition, the migration, transformation, bioavailability, and toxicity of selenium in the environment are closely related to its species. The species of selenium in various selenium-rich areas (Naore, Wamiao, and Guanquan) mainly include unusable residues and organic forms, followed by humic-acid-bound selenium. In the SE Alps, two Cretaceous–Eocene flysch basins, Julian and Brkini, filled with turbidite sediments, are present. This study novelly reports heavy mineral assemblage counts and detrital tourmaline characterization for 11 samples. It is possible to define three different groups, characterized by the presence of (1) a clinopyroxene–epidote–low-ZTR (zircon+tourmaline+rutile; 5%) sample association, (2) a high-ZTR (>48%)–garnet–apatite association and (3) a low-ZTR (<40%)–Cr-spinel–garnet association. Detrital tourmalines from both the Julian and Brkini flysch basins are rather similar in composition, associated with metapelites and metapsammites coexisting or not coexisting with an Al-saturating phase, ferric-iron-rich quartz–tourmaline rocks and calc–silicate rocks; however, their number is drastically different. In fact, even if the percentage of heavy minerals is very low and similar in both basins (0.17–1.34% in weight), in the Julian basin, the number of tourmaline crystals is much lower than that in Brkini (1–14 vs. 30–100), suggesting an important change in the provenance area. Interestingly, the presence of a high amount of tourmaline derived from ferric-iron-rich quartz–tourmaline rocks and calc–silicate rocks makes these two basins different from all the Cretaceous flysch basins of Bosnia and the Northern Dinaric zone, where these supplies are missing or very limited. The depositional ages and provenance of the Paleozoic Araba and Naqus Formations along the northern Gondwanan margin in Egypt have remained uncertain due to a lack of index fossils. Resolving this issue is crucial for understanding regional geology during deposition and subsequent tectonic development. We integrate detailed facies analysis, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), paleomagnetism, and mineralogical data to elucidate the genesis and depositional ages of the Araba and Naqus Formations. Petrographic analyses identified seven distinct facies types, providing insights into sedimentary textures, maturity, and sources, with contributions from igneous and metamorphic sources indicated by heavy minerals. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified accessory minerals such as quartz, goethite, kaolinite, hematite, and anatase. Paleomagnetism isolated two magnetic components (CA and CN) providing the first robust paleo pole positions at Lat. = 70.8° N, Long. = 308.2° E and Lat. = 37.8° N, Long. = 233.1° E, indicating Cambrian and Carboniferous ages for the Araba and Naqus formations, respectively. Thermal demagnetization constrained these dates using established polarity timescales. Mineralogical data indicated that the Araba Formation originated from an igneous source, while the Naqus Formation had a mixed metamorphic-igneous provenance. The integrated AMS and paleomagnetic data reveal evidence of post-depositional deformation. Specifically, the clustering of maximum AMS axes in the NW–SE direction for both formations, suggests the initial presence of a primary depositional fabric. However, prevalent tectonic activity during the Cenozoic appears to have overprinted and modified this fabric through deformation related to rifting of the Gulf of Suez region. Through this novel multi-proxy approach, we have resolved long-standing uncertainties regarding the formations' depositional ages. Our study thereby provides the first chronostratigraphic framework for these strategically important sedimentary units, significantly advancing understanding of regional Paleozoic geology. Suq Al-Shuyoukh is one of the Iraqi alluvial plain areas. Five farms were selected and a total of three samples were taken from each farm at depths of 50, 100, and 150 cm. All samples were subjected to a polarized light microscope to determine the mineral type in fine sand grains and determine the origin and the mechanism of their formation. The results showed two main mineral categories in the fine sand, light, and heavy minerals. The light minerals were Calcite, Quartz, Chert, Gypsum, Anhydrite, and Feldspar, in addition to rock pieces and some fossils. Calcite was dominant. The heavy minerals included the dark minerals (Opaque), Chlorite, Amphibole, Pyroxene,Apidot, Zircon, Muscovite, Garnet, Biotite, Rutile, Tourmaline, in addition to pieces of rocks or fossils, and the dominant mineral was Opaque. Weathering index values for heavy and light minerals ranged between (0.2 - 0.5%) and (4.5 - 9.6%), respectively. The weathering unit index values for light minerals showed an increase in the surface weathering decreased with depth, which indicates the climatic influences mainly. According to the heavy minerals'types and concentration, the proposed source for these minerals is the Arabian Shield due to the volcanic provenance of the parent rocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the characteristics of modern floodplain sediment (MFS) is important for geomorphological, paleoclimatic, sedimentation, and environmental investigations. We collected samples from present floodplain Nile sediments in Egypt's Sohag area and used mineralogical and geochemical (i.e., major and trace elements) proxies to investigate the characteristics and establish their provenances, climatic conditions during deposition, and weathering influence. The study revealed that the Nile floodplain sediments are composed mainly of silt (26–77%), clay fraction (7–44%), and sand content (3–63%), and their texture is classified as clayey silt. These sediments are classified geochemically as greywacke to shale. The mineralogical studies revealed two main assemblages of heavy minerals: the first assemblage represented by magnetite, goethite, zircon, epidote, and garnet and reflects the basement complex in the Eastern Desert and its surrounding rocks; and the second assemblage of goethite, pyroxene, hornblend, and mica of fooldplain deposits derived from the Ethiopian highlands. The geochemical studies indicate that the Nile sediments are immature and formed due to the moderate degree and nonsteady chemical weathering of the parent rocks. The geochemical studies show different mixed sources of sediments, where fine sediments are mostly mafic igneous with a partial contribution from siliscic sedimentary rocks, while the coarser ones are derived mainly from siliscic sedimentary and acidic igneous rocks. The sediments of the presented modern fooldplain reflected two different tectonic setting source areas (collision and continental rift tectonic setting for high silica and low silica samples, respectively) that were shared in supplying the sediments to the present basin. The study revealed that the investigated area may become desertified as a result of climate change and human activities such as salinity, fertiliser use, sand encroachment, and pollution. This study presents a thorough investigation into the concentration of heavy metals and mineral composition within four distinct coastal flora species: Cyperus conglomeratus, Halopyrum mucronatum, Sericostem pauciflorum, and Salvadora persica. Employing rigorous statistical methodologies such as Pearson coefficient correlation, principal component analysis (PCA), analysis of variance (ANOVA), and interclass correlation (ICC), we aimed to elucidate the bioavailability of heavy metals, minerals, and relevant physical characteristics. The analysis focused on essential elements including copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg2+), calcium (Ca2+), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and chloride (Cl–), all of which are known to play pivotal roles in the ecological dynamics of coastal ecosystems. Through PCA, we discerned distinctive patterns within PC1 to PC4, collectively explaining an impressive 99.65% of the variance observed in heavy metal composition across the studied flora species. These results underscore the profound influence of environmental factors on the mineral composition of coastal flora, offering critical insights into the ecological processes shaping these vital ecosystems. Furthermore, significant correlations among mineral contents in H. mucronatum; K+ with content of Na+ (r = 0.989) and Mg2+ (r = 0.984); as revealed by ICC analyses, contributed to a nuanced understanding of variations in electrical conductivity (EC), pH levels, and ash content among the diverse coastal flora species. The 2012 satellite ASTER geoscience maps of Australia were designed to provide public, web-accessible, and spatially comprehensive surface mineralogy for improved mapping and solutions to geoscience challenges. However, a number of the 2012 products were clearly compromised by variable green and/or dry vegetation cover. Here, we show a strategy to first estimate and then unmix the contributions of both these vegetation components to leave, as residual, the target surface mineralogy. The success of this unmixing process is validated by (i) visual suppression/removal of the regional climate and/or local fire-scar vegetation patterns; and (ii) pixel values more closely matching field sample data. In this process, we also found that the 2012 spectral indices used to gauge the AlOH content, AlOH composition, and water content can be improved. The updated (new indices and vegetation unmixed) maps reveal new geoscience information, including: (i) regional "wet" and "dry" zones that appear to express "deep" geological characters often expressed through thick regolith cover, with one zone over the Yilgarn Craton spatially anti-correlated with Archaean gold deposits; (ii) a ~1000 km wide circular feature over the Lake Eyre region defined by a rim of abundant "muscovite" that appears to coincide with opal deposits; (iii) a N–S zonation across the western half of the continent defined by abundant muscovite in the south and kaolinite in the north, which appears to reflect opposing E ↔ W aeolian sediment transport directions across the high-pressure belt; (iv) various paleo-drainage networks, including those over aeolian sand covered the "lowlands" of the Canning Basin, which are characterized by low AlOH content, as well as those over eroding "uplands", such as the Yilgarn Craton, which have complicated compositional patterns; and (v) a chronological history of Miocene barrier shorelines, back-beach lagoons, and alluvial fans across the Eucla Basin, which, to date, had proved elusive to map using other techniques, with potential implications for heavy mineral sand exploration. This study aimed to develop a geochemical database by thoroughly analyzing groundwater and sediments from coastal aquifers of southwest Bangladesh. Moreover, we investigated the source of sediment deposition and the mechanisms behind the presence of arsenic and salinity in groundwater. The seasonal distribution patterns of arsenic among the shallow and deep coastal aquifers were found to be 45.12 µg/l and 20.65 µg/l during dry and wet seasons, respectively. Moreover, the groundwater salinity distribution ranged from 3262.88 mg/l to 1930.88 mg/l during the dry and wet seasons. Cored sediment samples showed fine to medium sands of 92%, with silt and clay particles. The petrographic study of authigenic and heavy minerals revealed that the mineral grains were subangular to angular, indicating their textural immaturity of coastal sediments. The reactivity of goethite (FeOOH) and siderite (FeCO3) minerals suggests that the aquifers were subjected to slightly oxidized to moderately reducing conditions, with ORP values ranging from +50.40 mv to −149.5 mv. Such redox conditions could potentially result in the enrichment and mobility of arsenic in the groundwater. Although arsenic concentrations in deep aquifers are relatively low, higher salinity values are found in both shallow and intermediate coastal aquifers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The provenance of the Upper Miocene sandstones from the Sava and Drava depressions of the North Croatian Basin was investigated using petrographic, geochemical, and heavy mineral analyses, including Raman spectroscopy. The study of these sandstones, which represent important oil and gas reservoirs in Croatia, allowed reconstruction of the Late Miocene source-to-sink model of the Lake Pannon drainage system and the evolution of the southwestern Pannonian Basin. The studied feldspatho-litho-quartzose sandstones consist of a mixture of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous detritus. Heavy-mineral assemblages are dominated by almandine-rich garnet with apatite, epidote, tourmaline, rutile, zircon, staurolite, and zoisite, indicative of low to medium-grade metamorphic source rocks. Higher concentrations of Ca and Mg than in the Upper Continental Crust standard (UCC) additionally reflect the abundance of limestone and dolostone rock fragments as well as carbonate cement. Geochemical compositional variations between sandstone samples from the Sava and Drava depressions primarily stem from diagenetic processes. CIX and alpha values indicate only minor weathering. Compositional features indicate an orogenic source located in the Eastern Alps and primarily represented by Austroalpine and Penninic nappes. This research offers a novel perspective to distinguish the Upper Miocene reservoirs from other sedimentary units within the basin, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the regional geological dynamics and supporting future exploration projects also related to energy transition. Aridification of Central Asia in the Late Mesozoic led to drastic environmental changes characterized by widespread aeolian deposits. We systematically investigated fluvial‐aeolian deposits in the Middle Jurassic Toutunhe Formation, Upper Jurassic Kalazha Formation, and Lower Cretaceous Tugulu Group in the Junggar Basin to the north of the Tianshan Orogenic Belt via unmanned aerial vehicle‐based photogrammetry, scanning electron microscope, grain‐size analysis, and detrital zircon geochronology. Paludal and deltaic environments transitioned to a fluvial‐aeolian environment from the late Middle Jurassic to the Late Jurassic. Fan delta and incisive braided river deposits accumulated in the earliest Cretaceous and evolved into a lacustrine environment with aeolian deposits in the lakeshore. Aeolian deposits are characterized by moderate‐ to well‐sorted and subangular to subround sandstones with large‐scale, high‐dip cross‐bedding, inversely graded lamination, dominant saltation grains, crescent‐shaped, and dish‐shaped impact structures. Aeolian deposits contain heavy minerals including more ilmenite, zircon, garnet, and, tourmaline and less magnetite and epidote than the fluvial deposits. The preserved aeolian sediments of the Kalazha Formation extend west–east for more than 100 km, suggesting a wide desert area during the latest Jurassic. The detrital zircon age patterns indicate that the provenance of the aeolian deposits was similar to that of coeval fluvial deposits. The cooccurrence of fluvial and aeolian deposits and the similar provenances but orthogonal flow directions indicate that the aeolian deposits were mainly sourced from the nearby fluvial material within the basin. The evolution of the fluvial‐aeolian system responded to a complete base‐level cycle controlled by the aridification and tectonics. Due to decreased sediment supply caused by aridification, the base level rose, leading to the change from braided rivers to meandering rivers, along with the deposition of aeolian sediments. Due to the tectonic reactivation in the Late Jurassic, the base level fell, causing the occurrence of alluvial fans and the expansion of the aeolian sediments. Previous studies revealed that the Tianshan in the Jurassic exhibited low relief. The fluvial‐aeolian system played an important role in maintaining the limited relief in southern Central Asia. The Clarens Formation is a widespread aeolianite deposited over southern Gondwana and represents the final phase of erg evolution in the main Karoo Basin during the Early Jurassic. Previous age assessments of the formation hinge on limited detrital zircon data, supplemented by relative ages from the biostratigraphy and geochronology of the adjacent Karoo units. This study refines the depositional history of the Clarens Formation, including its sediment source dynamics as well as basin‐wide geochronological framework, based on U–Pb dating of detrital zircon grains, together with petrographic and sedimentological characterization. The abundant presence of heavy minerals like zircon, tourmaline and rutile suggests large‐scale detritus recycling, while the uniform sandstone composition on a regional scale is an indication of sediment homogenisation across the basin. Based on the prominent detrital zircon age fractions, the sediments are interpreted as having been reworked from pre‐existing rocks of the Karoo Supergroup (Permian), the Damara and Saldania Orogenic belts (650–490 Ma), whereas minor sources can be assigned to the Namaqua‐Natal Mobile Belt (1.35–1.1 Ga) and the western Sierras Pampeanas (1.30–1.33 Ga). Unstable minerals (hornblende, garnet, titanite, feldspar) provide evidence for a nearby granitic source east and southeast of the basin, related to likely Grenvillian rocks (1.0–1.3 Ga). An Early Jurassic zircon age fraction is linked to volcanic activity in the Chon Aike Magmatic Province that, at the time, was situated south and southwest of the study area. Maximum depositional ages derived from these detrital zircon dates suggest that the sedimentation of the Clarens Formation spanned an interval of ~10 Ma during the Pliensbachian and early Toarcian. More specifically, the lower part of the formation is of early Pliensbachian age or younger (~191–192), while the upper part is of early Toarcian age or younger (~181–183 Ma). Chlorite minerals, mainly in the form of clay coats, play a critical role in determining the reservoir quality of siliciclastic rocks. They can positively influence reservoir quality by preserving porosity during deep burial, but they can also play a negative role by reducing permeability through pore filling. The main aim of this research is to determine the optimal conditions for chlorite growth in sedimentary basins. This study investigates the Lower Cretaceous turbidite sandstone of the Agat Formation in the North Sea. We used a source‐to‐sink approach to investigate the impact of sediment source composition, chemical weathering and depositional environment on chlorite formation. Understanding the interplay between these processes can help refine exploration and exploitation strategies, optimise hydrocarbon recovery, and reduce exploration risks. Representative samples from two hydrocarbon fields (the Duva and Agat fields) were investigated using petrography, geochemistry, heavy mineral identification and quantification, and U–Pb geochronology of detrital zircons. Our results show a strong heterogeneity in the sediment provenance between the two turbidite systems. In the Duva field, the sandstone is derived from a mixture of mafic and felsic sources, producing Fe‐rich sediments. Intense chemical weathering generates fine fraction materials rich in kaolinite, vermiculite, and hydroxy‐interlayered clays, which are transported into shallow marine settings. Subsequent interaction with seawater results in the formation of glauconitic materials, Fe‐illite, and phosphatic concretions. These Fe‐rich materials are remobilised into deep marine settings, providing precursors for the development of authigenic Fe‐clays such as berthierine and chlorite. Conversely, in the Agat field, the sandstone is predominantly sourced from felsic rocks that underwent low chemical weathering, producing sediment rich in quartz and feldspar with a low amount of clays. With few Fe‐rich materials transported into the basin, the development of chlorite in the Agat field was less pervasive. Basin configuration and depositional environment exerted additional control on chlorite distribution. In the confined turbidite system (e.g. Duva field), chlorite is typically found as coating, whereas in less confined turbidite systems (e.g. Agat field) chlorite shows complex distribution related to depositional environment and dewatering processes. Our findings demonstrate the importance of considering the entire sediment routing system, from source to sink, when predicting chlorite occurrence and its impact on reservoir quality in deep marine settings. Assessing the past habitability of Mars and searching for evidence of ancient life at Jezero crater via the Perseverance rover are the key objectives of NASA's Mars 2020 mission. Onboard the rover, PIXL (Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry) is one of the best suited instruments to search for microbial biosignatures due to its ability to characterize chemical composition of fine scale textures in geological targets using a nondestructive technique. PIXL is also the first micro-X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer onboard a Mars rover. Here, we present guidelines for identifying and investigating a microbial biosignature in an aeolian environment using PIXL-analogous micro-XRF (μXRF) analyses. We collected samples from a modern wet aeolian environment at Padre Island, Texas, that contain buried microbial mats, and we analyzed them using μXRF techniques analogous to how PIXL is being operated on Mars. We show via μXRF technique and microscope images the geochemical and textural variations from the surface to ∼40 cm depth. Microbial mats are associated with heavy-mineral lags and show specific textural and geochemical characteristics that make them a distinct biosignature for this environment. Upon burial, they acquire a diffuse texture due to the expansion and contraction of gas-filled voids, and they present a geochemical signature rich in iron and titanium, which is due to the trapping of heavy minerals. We show that these intrinsic characteristics can be detected via μXRF analyses, and that they are distinct from buried abiotic facies such as cross-stratification and adhesion ripple laminations. We also designed and conducted an interactive survey using the Padre Island μXRF data to explore how different users chose to investigate a biosignature-bearing dataset via PIXL-like sampling strategies. We show that investigating biosignatures via PIXL-like analyses is heavily influenced by technical constraints (e.g., the XRF measurement characteristics) and by the variety of approaches chosen by different scientists. Lessons learned for accurately identifying and characterizing this biosignature in the context of rover-mission constraints include defining relative priorities among measurements, favoring a multidisciplinary approach to the decision-making process of XRF measurements selection, and considering abiotic results to support or discard a biosignature interpretation. Surface sediment characters and understanding the earth's surface processes are very interesting global research topics. The region in southeastern Tikrit city is characterized by the spread of large surface sediment from aeolian deposited types and dunes. These dunes were investigated to understand the origin of these dunes. For this purpose, grain size analysis, XRD, XRF, and heavy mineral analyses were conducted. Results indicate that these sand dunes in the study area are mainly composed of coarse particles such as sand (especially fine sand) with a percentage more than fine particles (mud), and the fine sand fraction is the predominant class. The sand grains are characterized by also negative value of skewness (strongly coarse skewed), moderately sorted, and leptokurtic. The normal distribution curve shows a unimodal type for most samples, reflecting one potential sediment source. Mineralogically, quartz is the main mineral composition of this sand, in addition to other minerals such as feldspar, clay minerals, calcite, dolomite, and gypsum. The identified heavy minerals in these samples were tourmaline, garnet, zircon, kyanite, chlorite, rutile, hornblende, and olivine. Regarding the geochemistry, the distribution of major oxides and trace elements in these samples area showed high SiO2 and TiO2 and low content of Na2O. Black sand is beach deposits that come from the headwaters of the Nile, which are rich in heavy minerals. The major economic mineral is ilmenite. It represents around 60 – 70 % of economic minerals quantity. To increase the adding value of the national resources, a series of experiments to study the smelting process for producing high Titania slag and cast iron. The effect of many factors such as time (20, 25 & 30 min), carbon content (15 %, 20 % & 30 %) and using a flux (1 %, 2 % & 3 %) were studied. The results revealed that time of the experiment has the most significant affecting on the iron yield among other factors. The maximum obtained iron yield was about 80.5 % and the assay of titanium dioxide in Titania slag was about 77.6 % for 30% carbon at 30 minutes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The topography of the Harlik Mountain has a strong impact on the formation of current arid climate in the Turpan-Hami Basin. However, it is still controversial if Harlik Mountain experienced significant exhumation during the Middle to Late Cenozoic according to the previous thermochronology studies. The features of the Oligocene to Miocene sediments in the foreland basin could provide productive information for resolving the debates. The peak ages of detrital apatite fission track analysis of the Oligocene–Miocene sandstone in the Turpan-Hami Basin are well comparable with the cooling age records of the Harlik Mountain rocks, indicating that the Oligocene–Miocene Taoshuyuanzi Formation in the basin was mostly derived from the Harlik Mountain. The stratigraphic sequence exhibits coarsening upward, reflecting that the source area was in a tectonically active period during the deposition process. Heavy mineral assemblages also suggest that the unstable minerals in the sediment increased significantly at the end of the deposition. Moreover, the proportion of apatite increased up-section, while the garnet content decreased significantly, indicating that the Carboniferous metamorphic rocks have been gradually eroded out and more intrusive rocks have been exposed to the surface. These observations suggest that the Harlik Mountain experienced exhumation during the Oligocene to Miocene, and the denudation depth afterward was probably less than 2.5 km according to the previously apatite (U-Th)/He data. The large-sized Tarangaole uranium deposit and its neighboring Daying and Nalinggou deposits, located in the northeastern margin of the Ordos Basin, constitutes a major uranium resource base in northern China. In order to further clarify the sedimentary material source, uranium source and regional sediment–tectonic setting of the uranium-fed clastic rocks (i.e., Zhiluo Formation(J2z)) in the district, this paper carried out whole-rock geochemistry, heavy minerals composition and in situ U-Pb dating of detrital zircons for sandstones from the lower section of the Zhiluo Formation. The results have shown that the average chemical differentiation index (CIA) for the host rocks is 73.16 and the chemical weathering degree is moderate. Heavy minerals are mainly composed of ilmenite, garnet, chlorpyrite, zircon, pyrite, apatite, hematite, etc. The U-Pb dating of detrital zircon generally indicates three age peaks, i.e., 260~Ma, 1850~Ma and 2450~Ma, respectively. In conclusion, the source rocks may have been formed at active continental margins, e.g., in a continental margin arc environment. The sedimentary materials mainly come from khondalite series, TTGs, granulite, and mafic–ultramafic intrusive rocks distributed among the Daqing–Ula Mountains and adjacent areas, etc. The Late Paleozoic U-rich intermediate and acidic magmatic rocks spreading over the eastern part of the Ula–Daqing and Wolf mountains have provided the main uranium sources for the formation of major U deposits in the northern Ordos Basin. Research on the provenance of sedimentary systems is key to better understanding the sedimentary framework and improving exploration-associated decision-making and deployment. With regard to the provenance of sedimentary systems, there is still poor understanding in the initial rifting stage due to imbalanced and insufficient exploration and a common lack of seismic data, which have seriously hindered oil exploration in the Qintong Sag, Subei Basin. This study aimed at investigating the provenance in the direction of the fault-terrace zone in the southeast part of the Qintong Sag and aimed to examine whether large-scale sedimentary systems are formed by these sediment sources. Integrated analysis of heavy minerals, sandstone petrologic maturity, drilling cutting dates, 3D seismic data, and well logs was employed to identify the provenance. This study is the first time that large-scale provenance from the direction of the fault-terrace zone has been discovered in the third member of the Paleocene Funing Formation (referred to as the third Mbr of the Funing Fm in this paper) in the Subei Basin, east China. The documentation shows that sediments from the northwest Wubao Low Uplift and the southeast Taizhou Uplift can be distinguished in the Qintong Sag, with the large-scale delta system in the central and eastern part of the Qintong Sag comprising sediments from the Taizhou Uplift, improving upon previous understanding of the sedimentary framework. The deposition formed by the Taizhou Uplift provenance system was characterized by gradual weakening of the hydrodynamic forces, a decreasing sediment supply, and shrinking of the retrogradational delta depositional systems with good reservoir qualities, which are characterized by high-quality source–reservoir–cap combinations and are likely to develop into a hydrocarbon-rich belt. The discovery of the Taizhou Uplift provenance proves that there may be major provenance and large-scale sedimentary systems from the fault-terrace zone of the rift basins in the initial rifting stage. The experience of rapid retrogradation showed that these large-scale delta systems are likely to only flourish in the initial rifting stage. The Laurentide Ice Sheet's (LIS) interior had a dynamic polythermal base, but the spatiotemporal variations of subglacial processes related to ice divide migration and other transient changes remain largely unknown, limiting our understanding of regional glacial dynamics. Previous studies focused on the regional glacial landform record, while ice sheet models lacked detailed parameterization within these regions, leading to an overestimation of cold-based subglacial conditions' extent and duration. In this study, glacial sediment dispersal patterns as identified by heavy minerals, clasts, and multivariate statistics of till matrix geochemistry were used to assess ice sheet dynamics within the Quebec–Labrador sector of the LIS. The earliest ice-flow phase produced and transported till across the study area (>175 km). However, major oxide data from till matrix geochemistry show a correlation with underlying bedrock, and this relationship is relatively common in areas of thin till cover and resistant bedrock lithologies. These results suggest a switch from an early phase of widespread erosion and long, sustained sediment transport to one of more limited erosion, perhaps abrasion dominant and shorter transport. Till compositional data and related dispersal patterns add supporting evidence to earlier ice sheet reconstructions based on ice-flow indicators and 10Be data together suggesting a transition from widespread uniform warm-based conditions during the earliest ice flow, followed by the development of an ice divide, its migration, and more sporadic warm-based conditions. Gregory's diverticulum, a digestive tract structure unique to a derived group of sand dollars (Echinoidea: Scutelliformes), is filled with sand grains obtained from the substrate the animals inhabit. The simple methods of shining a bright light through a specimen or testing response to a magnet can reveal the presence of a mineral-filled diverticulum. Heavy minerals with a specific gravity of >2.9 g/cm3 are selectively concentrated inside the organ, usually at concentrations one order of magnitude, or more, greater than found in the substrate. Analyses of diverticulum content for thirteen species from nine genera, using optical mineralogy, powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, as well as micro-computed tomography shows the preference for selection of five major heavy minerals: magnetite (Fe3O4), hematite (Fe2O3), ilmenite (FeTiO3), rutile (TiO2), and zircon (ZrSiO4). Minor amounts of heavy or marginally heavy amphibole, pyroxene and garnet mineral grains may also be incorporated. In general, the animals exhibit a preference for mineral grains with a specific gravity of >4.0 g/ cm3, although the choice is opportunistic and the actual mix of mineral species depends on the mineral composition of the substrate. The animals also select for grain size, with mineral grains generally in the range of 50 to 150 mm, and do not appear to alter this preference during ontogeny. A comparison of analytical methods demonstrates that X-ray attenuation measured using micro-computed tomography is a reliable non-destructive method for heavy mineral quantification when supported by associated analyses of mineral grains extracted destructively from specimens or from substrate collected together with the specimens. Caves are unique sedimentary archives that may record the evolution of the surrounding landscape. In this study, we applied combination of mineralogical data on allochthonous sediments with digital modelling of isobase surfaces to reconstruct the multi‐phased geomorphological development of the karst of the Harmanecká dolina Valley. The allochthonous cave sediments contain quartz and translucent heavy minerals (HMs) such as tourmaline, garnet, rutile, apatite, zircon, pyroxene, amphibole, staurolite, spinel, monazite, corundum, epidote, xenotime and florencite. Rounded shape and surface microtextures preserved on quartz and most HM grains point to predominantly a fluvial transport of detritus and its multiple recycling history. Pyroxene and amphibole are exceptions that denoted a very close source and the first‐cycle sedimentation from the adjacent volcanic Kremnické vrchy Mts. corresponding to obtained SHRIMP U–Pb detrital zircon ages of ~13.8–12.8 Ma. Heavy‐mineral geochemistry (e.g., zoned grossular‐rich garnet) and wide range of the Palaeozoic ages (Ordovician to Permian) confirms that the studied detritus sourced dominantly in the Western‐Carpathian crystalline basement rocks of the Veporic/Tatric tectonic units initially distributed by the palaeo‐Hron River and its tributaries from the east. Rare cummingtonite, remarkable tourmaline with omphacite inclusions and florencite point to the mixture of recycled sediments of Neogene Danube Basin formations containing also Austroalpine pre‐Neogene basement detritus, and confirm the original widespread distribution of the Neogene sediments currently eroded. Geomorphometric analyses of a LiDAR digital terrain model and derived isobase surface elevation models indicate the topographic development of wider area and support the findings about the transport direction of detritus. Presented multi‐method approach is suitable not only for the understanding of development of the surroundings of Harmanecká dolina Valley but also for the palaeogeographic and geomorphological reconstructions of similar karst and non‐karst areas. Heavy minerals (HM) are widely used in provenance studies, for example, for reconstructing source areas and quantifying sediment budgets. Source rock mineral fertility influences the composition and concentration of HM in sediments. The resulting bias is of particular interest when interpreting single-grain data such as detrital age distributions. However, the quantification of fertility is complex and there are no robust data for most HM, which prevents the routine implementation of fertility in many studies. In this study, we test whether mineral fertility can be assessed by quantifying mineral concentrations in detrital samples through point counting and quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN). The challenge is to transform the resulting area percentage into mass percentage, which is a prerequisite for comparing those data with grain size or geochemical data. We suggest overcoming this problem by recording grain-size and shape metrics of minerals using image analysis, and applying several transformation steps. We test our method by (a) using a series of detrital grain mixtures of known density and mass, and (b) applying it to a natural sediment from the European Alps. Our results agree with existing methods developed for apatite and zircon, that is, the quantification of fertility through geochemistry (with P2O5 and Zr concentrations as proxies for apatite and zircon) and the separation of pure apatite and zircon concentrates using additional separation steps. The advantage of our method is its applicability to all HM (not only apatite and zircon) and the redundancy of additional separation steps, which might create bias. Plain Language Summary Heavy minerals (HM) are minerals of high density that usually occur in low percentages in most sediments and sedimentary rocks. The type and frequency of HM in sediments can help reconstruct the origin of the grains and thus sediment pathways on the Earth's surface. However, the absolute amount and relative proportions of HM can vary substantially, depending, for example, on the availability of these minerals in their source rocks (fertility). For studies that aim to quantify the amount of sediment supplied by different sources, the mineral fertility of all the sources in question should be known. However, such quantitative estimates are usually unavailable, and the existing methods to calculate fertility do not apply to a range of HM. We therefore suggest a procedure based on counting minerals under a microscope and transforming the resulting area percentage to mass percentage using grain-size and shape estimates. We test this procedure on artificial sediments with known grain proportions, sizes, and shapes and then apply it to natural samples. We show that using simple size and shape estimates, the resulting mass percentages are in accordance with published fertility data. The geochemical and mineralogical investigations conducted on a core retrieved from a paleolake in Faiyum Depression, Egypt, reveal a variation in two precipitation patterns; these are the Ethiopian African Monsoon (EAM) at the Nile Headwaters and the Mediterranean winter rains. The heavy mineral assemblage, and the geochemical characteristics, exhibit significant shifts in clastic input to the paleolake. These variations suggest shifting in the sources of sediment, with an East African origin during the African Humid Period (AHP) and in the Late Holocene, and a White Nile source during the Late Pleistocene and Middle Holocene. Geochemical data is additionally utilized in the determination of variations in the properties of the paleo-water (paleo-salinity and paleo-productivity). The paleo-water of Faiyum Lake exhibited characteristics of a substantial freshwater body during the Early to Mid-Holocene. For the purpose of characterizing the chemical composition indices of ilmenites from the fluvial system in southwestern Cameroon, electron probe microanalysis of mineral chemistry was carried out on ilmenite grains selected from the collected sediment samples. Previously, various particle size parameters (mean size, standard deviation, kurtosis, and skewness) were applied to the sand fraction to describe textural characteristics and heavy minerals. The study reveals sands with a coarse to medium size trend, with a predominance of coarse, poorly to moderately sorted. These traits point to a high-energy setting. The 0.125–0.063 mm grain size fractions of the sands were used for the recovery of heavy minerals. The occurrence of unstable heavy minerals, such as hornblende, zoisite, garnet, and augite, in these sands denote immature sediments. According to a quantitative evaluation, the main accompanying opaque heavy minerals that may contain ilmenite are zircon and zoisite. The major and minor element compositions of ilmenite, TiO2 (43.75–56.98%; average 48.41%) and FeO (34.31–48.86% (average 43.89%), with MnO (3.06%), V2O5 (2.15%), and Nb2O5 (0.29%) including, indicate composite igneous rock. The Ti/(Ti + Fe) ratio values (0.42 to 0.52) of the samples are characteristic of ferri-ilmenites and hydrated ilmenites which have favorable to the sulfate process for the manufacture of ferrotitanium pigment. This study investigates mineralogy, geochemistry, and the origin of acidic volcanic rocks and stream sediments in the Central Eastern Desert of Egypt, focusing on the southeast G. El-Hadid area. Geological units comprise serpentinites, metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanics, older granites, acidic volcanic rocks, and younger granites. Notably, rhyolites and pyroclastics constitute the acidic volcanics. Early post-volcanic alteration is evident through quartz and fluorite veins, while the presence of common kaolinitization, sericitization, and hematitization indicates late-stage post-volcanic alteration. The mineralogical examination of the acidic volcanics and stream sediments reveals enrichment in thorite, xenotime, monazite, zircon, and fluorite. Pyroclastic composition shows higher concentrations of incompatible trace elements than rhyolite, with enriched large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and relatively depleted high field strength elements (HFSE). Pyroclastic samples notably exhibit higher rare earth element (REE) concentrations (up to 906 ppm) relative to associated rhyolite (up to 95 ppm). The rhyolitic samples are characterized by fairly fractionated patterns ((La/Lu)N = 2.45–3.56) and moderately fractionated HREE contents ((Gd/Lu)N = 0.93–1.06). The pyroclastic samples display relatively weak fractionated patterns ((La/Lu)N = 0.06–2.06) and weak to unfractionated fractionated HREE contents ((Gd/Lu)N = 0.04–0.43). Both the Na/Ta and Y/Nb ratios suggest crustal magma sources for both acidic melts. Stream sediment samples reveal significant REE abundances, and its geochemical maps indicate enrichment in U and Th correlating with anomalies in REEs, Hf, Sn, W, Zr, Y, and Nb. The presence of pyroclastics upstream of Wadi Khor Um Safi suggests potential as a REE resource. The geochemical characteristics resemble a continental-arc setting formed through an active margin. REE abundance patterns in pyroclastic rocks and associated stream sediments exhibit the M-type tetrad effect and strong Europium (Eu) depletion as a result of fluid–melt interaction during late-stage fractional crystallization. This study is focused on the evaluation of the geophagic characteristics of the sedimentary clay deposits at Share and Tshonga areas, northern Bida Basin, Nigeria. The methods used include particle size distribution, cation exchange capacity (CEC), acidity and alkalinity (pH), X-ray diffractometry, and bulk inorganic geochemical analysis (X-ray fluorescence and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrophotometer). The investigated clays are classified as dominantly clayey–silt with minor clayey–sand type, which conforms with the textural standard of geophagic clays obtained from different parts of the world. The whitish coloration of the clays with an occasional red stain also compares well with geophagic clays from Kenya and parts of South Africa and is therefore considered suitable for consumption. The observed low CEC (1.71–5.06 cmol(+)/kg) and acidic pH (4.54–6.87) values of the clay samples would make them effective against nausea and excessive salivation during pregnancy. The mineralogical compositions of these clay samples show the dominance of kaolinite with minor non-clay minerals, which makes it suitable not only for food detoxification but also as an alleviation of gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea. Chemical analysis shows a low percentage per weight of certain elements that are of nutritional value, though not in the present state but better as excipients in the pharmaceutical industry. It was observed, however, that consumption of more of the studied clay may lead to adverse health due to the presence of some heavy metals (Co, Cu, Ni, Cd, Ag, and Pb) with concentrations in excess of the permissible limit.

The water resource provided by lake basins in the western desert of Iraq is important for human occupation of areas outside the Tigris‐Euphrates floodplain, both in the past and into the future. This paper presents the first geomorphological and geochronological study of the date of formation of the Najaf Sea and the only such study of any lake basin to the west of Mesopotamia. Geomorphological shoreline features and a palaeochannel linking to the Euphrates were studied and dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dating. Provenance was determined using heavy mineral analysis. Past environments in the Najaf Sea were reconstructed by molluscan analysis. The earliest OSL ages date from c. 30 000 and 22 000 years ago and seem to predate lake formation. Younger OSL ages date the highest lake level at c. 19 m asl to between 1620–1760 AD (base) to 1906–1974 AD (near surface). The radiocarbon ages are affected by a freshwater reservoir effect, but the maximum ages recorded for either of the c. 15 m and c. 17 m asl shorelines are c. 800 cal. BC. This predates the first archaeological sites in the Najaf basin and is similar to maximum ages of c. 850 and c. 1100 cal. BC from the associated palaeochannel. This timing does not seem to be linked to a humid climate event. We therefore conclude that the establishment of the Najaf Sea in the Najaf basin occurred as a result of an avulsion event within the Euphrates system that diverted flow to the basin. The trigger for this avulsion event likely related to rapid sediment accumulation and may have been either autogenic or driven by human activity. This study therefore suggests that Najaf Sea formation facilitated human expansion beyond the Tigris‐ Euphrates floodplain and occurred due to avulsion of the Euphrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the late Permian and Triassic, the continental Mitu Group formed in extensional basins along the length of the Cordillera Oriental and Altiplano of present-day Peru. Given the presence of coeval arc systems only in northern Chile and southern Ecuador but not in Peru the tectonic setting of the Mitu basin has been interpreted variably as orthogonal continental rift, sinistral transtensional rift, aulacogen and back-arc basin. The Mitu Group comprises continental mass flow and alluvial fan, fluvial, aeolian and minor lacustrian facies and hosts thick piles of subalkaline and alkaline intermediate and felsic ignimbrites and mafic lavas. The age of the Mitu Group had originally been established as ranging from the Late Permian to the late Triassic on the basis of structural considerations and scarce biostratigraphic data. Recently, U-Pb zircon ages from ignimbrites and sedimentary rocks have been taken to constrain the Mitu Group to the Middle and Late Triassic. We performed a sedimentological, heavy mineral, and zircon geochronological and Lu-Hf isotope study of the Mitu Group in 14 sections mainly in southern and central Peru, and one section in northern Peru. Ten new U-Pb concordia ages on ignimbrites intercalated in the Mitu Group successions offer a new robust stratigraphic framework and constrain the stratigraphy of the Mitu Group between 260 and 205 Ma. In combination with maximum likelihood ages of deposition derived from detrital zircon, U-Pb geochronology places the deposition of the Mitu Group between ca. 270 and 194 Ma (lower Guadalupian into the Sinemurian). Detrital zircon U-Pb age distributions and heavy mineral assemblages reflect a strongly recycled Precambrian Amazonian and Palaeozoic proto-Andean provenance. The Palaeozoic detrital age patterns are highly variable, and temporally and spatially random. A local provenance can generally not be identified. εHf(t) values in zircon obtained from ignimbrites and sedimentary rocks indicate variable degrees of crustal recycling. In the course of the Palaeozoic, εHf(t) values become on average progressively less negative, with a large proportion particularly of Mitu age zircons' εHf(t) values encompassing less evolved and moderately juvenile compositions. Along strike of the basin stratigraphic thicknesses, and rates and times of accumulation vary strongly with larger thicknesses and rates being registered in southern Peru. This suggests that the Mitu basin had been divided into a number of subbasins with individual histories of subsidence, accumulation, and volcanism. Absent a magmatic arc, late Permian-Triassic Peru evolved in a sinistral plate tectonic and regional framework expressed particularly in the sinistral Late Gondwanide orogeny predating the Mitu Group. We interpret that a sinistral transform fault linked the subduction zones in southern Ecuador and northern Chile and that the Mitu Group basin has formed by sinistral transtensional and transpressional movements along a related transcurrent fault inboard of the transform margin. In the broader framework of the accretionary Terra Australis orogen along the western Gondwana margin, this interpretation fits its evolution in the Andean segment in an internally consistent way. In the present study unconventional resources bearing rare earth mineral garnet and sillimanite have been attempted to recover using different alternate flowsheets. The best commercial grade garnet and sillimanite products are obtained from total heavy mineral concentrate recovered by using a spiral concentrator. The garnet product obtained after cleaning with spiral followed by a magnetic separator has a garnet grade of 98.8%, with a recovery of 97.2% and 4.13% overall yield from the bulk sample containing 4.5% garnet. In case of sillimanite also the spiral material is cleaned with a magnetic separator and followed by flotation yields a sillimanite material containing 98.6% sillimanite grade, with a recovery of 95.3% and an overall yield of 3.9% from most feed sample contain 4.0% sillimanite. Therefore, it is recommended to use gravity to remove the gangue ore before it enters the concentrator and to use magnetic equipment for garnet and flotation to obtain commercial grade sillimanite. The Levant Basin in the Eastern Mediterranean contains an ∼3-km-thick, predominantly siliciclastic section of Oligocene-Miocene age, which hosts large hydrocarbon reservoirs ("Tamar Sands Play"). Here, we present a provenance study of Oligocene-Miocene sandstones based on detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf and heavy mineral assemblages. Samples were retrieved from four boreholes across the Levant Basin: Myra-1, Dolphin-1, Leviathan-1, and Karish North-1. Our investigations revealed that the sediments are dominated by Neoproterozoic and older Precambrian zircons with variable Hf isotopic composition, indicating that they were mainly reworked from Paleozoic-Mesozoic sandstones of African-Arabian provenance, with minor derivation from the Neoproterozoic basement of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. Variations in the proportions of pre-900 Ma zircons were encountered in various levels of the siliciclastic section. These zircons were markedly enriched (44%-57%) in the Rupelian and Aquitanian-Burdigalian intervals, accompanied by abundant detrital apatite peloids in the heavy mineral fraction, and relatively sparse (21%-38%) in the Chattian-Aquitanian and Langhian-Tortonian intervals, alongside scarce Mesozoic-Cenozoic zircons. These findings allow us to associate the deep-basin detrital record with two sedimentary transport systems that reached the Levant Basin from both NE Africa and Arabia simultaneously until the late Miocene, when sediment transport from Arabia ceased. While Rupelian and Aquitanian-Burdigalian sediments, including the main section of the "Tamar Sands," were derived mainly from Arabian sources via the Levant continental margin, Chattian-Aquitanian and Langhian-Tortonian sediments were primarily sourced from NE Africa via the Nile Delta. Detrital contribution from the Eurasian side of the Eastern Mediterranean was not identified, suggesting that sand originating in the Arabia-Eurasia collision belt did not reach the Levant Basin. The study of rare earth elements (REEs) in marine sediments is a powerful geochemical tool for determining depositional processes and sediment provenance, as well as for understanding paleoenvironmental changes. In this context, we present REE, some major and trace elements, grain size, and mineralogy data on surface and core sediments, which were collected in different areas of the eastern Laptev Sea Shelf (LSS; Arctic Ocean). The primary objective of this paper was to assess the principal controlling factors influencing REE concentration and their vertical to lateral distribution. The total REE content (ΣREE) ranged from 139 ppm to 239 ppm within the studied sediment samples, predominantly consisting of silt. The normalized REE distribution patterns, based on North American Shale Composite (NASC) standard, exhibited an enrichment in light REE (LREE) when compared to heavy REE (HREE), which is similar to that in Lena River suspended particulate matter. The primary sources of REEs in the eastern LSS were both the suspended particulate matter from the Lena River and sediments originating from the coastal ice complex. The spatial distribution of REEs was primarily contingent upon the distance from sediment sources and prevailing hydrological conditions and was generally characterized by a decrease in REE concentration seaward. There was a moderate positive correlation between ΣREE and mean grain size in the studied surface sediment. However, this relationship was specific only for surface samples and was not found in the sediment cores, indicating that sediment grain size does not play a significant role in the REE vertical distribution. The strong positive correlation between ΣREE and Al, K, Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Hf, and Th suggests that REEs are hosted by not only heavy but also clay minerals.
