The transition to renewable energy sources comes along with the search for new energy storage solutions. Molecular solar thermal systems directly harvest and store solar energy in a chemical manner. By a suitable molecular design, a higher overall efficiency can be achieved. In this study, we investigate the surface chemistry of oxa-norbornadiene/quadricyclane derivatives on a Pt(111) surface. Specifically, we focus on the energy storage and release properties of molecules that are substituted with ester moieties of different sizes. For our model catalytic approach, synchrotron radiation-based x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were conducted in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and correlated with the catalytic behavior in the liquid phase monitored by photochemical infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. The differences in their spectral appearance enabled us to unambiguously differentiate the energy-lean and energy-rich isomers and decomposition products. Next to qualitative information on the adsorption motifs, temperature-programmed experiments allowed for the observation of thermally induced reactions and the deduction of the related reaction pathways. We analyzed the selectivity of the cycloreversion reaction from the energy-rich quadricyclane derivative to its energy-lean norbornadiene isomer and competing processes, such as desorption and decomposition. For the 2,3-bis(methylester)-substitution, the cycloreversion reaction was found to occur between 310 and 340 K, while the thermal stability limit of the compounds was determined to be 380 K. The larger 2,3-bis(benzylester) derivatives have a lower apparent adsorption energy and a decomposition onset already at 135 K. In the liquid phase (in acetonitrile), we determined the rate constants for the cycloreversion reaction on Pt(111) to k = 5.3 × 10−4 s−1 for the 2,3-bis(methylester)-substitution and k = 6.3 × 10−4 s−1 for the 2,3-bis(benzylester) derivative. The selectivities were of >99% and 98% for the two molecules, respectively. The difference in the catalytic behavior of Pt(111) for both derivatives is less pronounced in the liquid phase than in UHV, which we attribute to the passivation of the Pt(111) surface by carbonaceous species under ambient conditions. A novel fiber reinforced cementitious composites was developed by incorporating microencapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) and nanographene oxide (NGO) to enhance the composites' thermal properties without compromising the compressive strength. Regarding the thermo-mechanical properties, with the addition of NGO, while mechanical properties improve, thermal mass increases and the heat storage ability of the produced composite material enhances. In this situation; it can be interpreted that it will be possible to benefit more from the energy stored by PCMs, as the energy required to change the temperature of the unit mass of the material will decrease. The environmental impact assessment has also revealed that CO 2 emissions from production increase with the use of PCMs. However, it has been determined that the addition of NGOs will make a positive contribution to the life cycle, as CO 2 emissions resulting from cement will decrease. In conclusion, a novel fiber reinforced composite with enhanced thermal and mechanical properties by combining PCMs and NGO has shown a great potential for environmentally friendly buildings with the integration of structure, energy conservation and long term durability. Clean energy advances can drive solid heat storage technology. Because of their high-temperature, corrosion, and excellent thermal shock resistance properties, refractory oxides are widely used as solid heat storage materials. However, their applications are limited owing to their poor heat-transfer performance resulting from their multicomponent, multiphase, and complex nature and thus understanding their heat-transfer mechanism will be crucial for their performance optimization. In this study, the thermal properties and mechanisms of corundum, high-alumina, and magnesia bricks were characterized using heat-transfer theories and models. Macroscopic analysis of the bricks revealed that they are all "internal porosity" materials. By comparing the weighting parameter j , the multiphase high-alumina brick shows poor heat-transfer path patency and the measured thermal conductivity is the lowest at 3.55 W m−1 K−1. Microscopic analysis found that in contrast to the thermal conductivity of other materials, the thermal conductivity of high-alumina bricks was significantly affected by phonon intrinsic scattering. Moreover, corundum and magnesia bricks exhibited a wider range of ultimate heat-transfer performance than the high-alumina brick. Hence, the heat-transfer performance of refractory oxide can be enhanced by increasing their particle contact, reducing the negative effects of microcracks, phases, and impurities, and by reducing the number of defects on phonon heat transfer, thereby providing an optimization scheme for improving the heat-transfer performance of the materials. The demand for efficient applications of solar energy and nanomaterials has grown significantly in recent years due to industrial needs and the desire to minimize energy consumption and costs. However, the efficiency of photovoltaic cells and solar-powered ships is highly dependent on solar radiation. In this study, a model for the installation of a parabolic trough surface collector (PTSC) was developed to achieve high temperatures on solar-powered ships. The current study analyzed the thermal characterization function in solar-powered ships under the effect of heat radiation, magnetic field, and viscous dissipation by employing hybrid magnetite particles (Fe3O4) and silver (Ag). The Cattaneo–Christov model has been used to assess heat flux in the thermal boundary layer. The Galerkin weighted residual method (GWRM) has been employed to solve the ordinary differential equations using MATHEMATICA 11.3 software. The findings showed that the thermal efficiency of the hybrid nanofluid was significantly enhanced by 56.3% relative percentage. Phase change material (PCM) is an ideal heat storage material with huge latent heat and nearly constant phase change temperature, but there are serious problems in application such as leakage and low thermal conductivity. Porous ceramic is widely used in PCM packaging because of its advantages of controllable porosity and high thermal conductivity. Porous Al 2 O 3 ceramics were prepared by foaming injection coagulation method. In order to improve the thermal conductivity of porous ceramic matrix, Porous Al 2 O 3 @Graphite Ceramics (PAGC) were prepared by sucrose decomposition. Form-Stable Phase Change Materials (FSPCMs) were prepared by adsorption of Lauric Acid/Myristic Acid (LA/MA) in PAGC by vacuum impregnation method. SEM showed that the prepared PAGC had a three-dimensional interpenetrating structure and high porosity. TEM and XPS showed that alumina skeleton were uniformly coated with graphite. After PAGC impregnated by LA/MA, the maximum PCM storage reached 62.11 wt %. The maximum latent heat of FSPCMs reaches 83.33 J/g. Thermogravimetric analysis, thermal cycling test and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the prepared FSPCMs has good thermal stability, thermal reliability, chemical stability and compressive strength. More importantly, the thermal conductivity of the prepared FSPCMs is greatly improved, reaching up to 3.73 W/mK. It is 20.72 times the original PCM, mainly due to the synergistic effect of the Al 2 O 3 skeleton and the graphite coating to build a continuous highway for heat transfer. Summary: Apigenin (AP) is a natural flavonoid with multiple health benefits that can be used in functional foods. However, the hydrophobicity and poor aqueous solubility of AP have hindered its food application. With ethanol injection and spray drying, encapsulated AP in dried chitosan‐coated liposomes could be promising in delivering AP via foods. By comparing with the unencapsulated AP, this study examined the potential of spray‐dried chitosan‐coated apigenin liposomes (SCAL) in preserving the AP content and antioxidant capacity against food‐related heat, pH, light, oxygen and salt conditions. The moisture sorption isotherms and storage stability of SCAL were also investigated. The results show that the encapsulated AP in SCAL had better stability against pH (pH 2, pH 4, pH 6 and pH 7), light, oxygen and salt stress (0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 M NaCl) than the unencapsulated AP. The limits of relative humidity (RH) for SCAL storage were found to be <50% at 25 °C, <60% at 35 °C and <70% at 45 °C. SCAL could preserve AP over 90 days in room (86.55–95.42%) and chilled (91.54–95.79%) conditions. These findings suggest the potential of spray‐dried chitosan‐coated liposomes in improving the stability of AP, hence SCAL is promising for delivering AP in functional foods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aims to find the optimal fin length distribution for improved heat transfer during melting and solidification in a tubular phase change material (PCM) heat exchanger (HE) designed for heat storage. Three types of horizontal PCM tabular HEs, all with five longitudinal fins, were studied numerically. While maintaining a constant heat‐transfer area, each model depicts a unique fin length distribution design. The first model, which serves as the reference design, has a uniform fin length distribution and each fi\n is 30 mm long. The second model has shorter upper and side fins and longer lower fins. The third model has long lower fins but shorter than that of the second model, with short side fins and no change in upper fin length with reference design. The findings indicate that the second model exhibits the best heat‐transfer performance for the melting process, while the first model is most effective for solidification. Interestingly, the third design emerges as the optimum choice for both melting and solidification processes, where for 1 h of melting operation, results obtained 87%, 92%, and 90% for three models, respectively, from the first uniform model to the third model. The formation of shape-stabilized composite phase change materials (CPCMs) with special structure is an efficient strategy to prevent the leakage of phase change materials (PCMs) and improve the solar-thermal conversion ability. In this work, graphene and boron nitride nanosheets (BBNS) were prepared by the magnesiothermic reduction SHS method in CO 2 and N 2 atmosphere, respectively. Then, an anisotropic and hierarchical porous boron nitride/graphene aerogel with three-dimensional network was constructed by directional ice-freezing method using carboxymethyl cellulose as supporting framework and adhesive, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was impregnated to prepare novel CPCMs. The CPCMs had enthalpies of 150∼160 J/g, and a highest thermal conductivity of 0.390 W/(m·K), which was around 47% higher than that of pure PEG. The ability of the CPCMs to convert solar energy to thermal energy was significantly enhanced. Under a simulated light intensity of sunlight (100 mW/cm2), its solar-thermal conversion efficiency reaches 94.92%, and after 20 min of irradiation, the surface temperature can reach 72 °C. Phase change materials (PCMs) have attracted greater attention in battery thermal management systems (BTMS) applications due to their compact structure and excellent thermal storage performance. This work developed a BTMS model based on composite phase change material (CPCM) for a cylindrical lithium-ion battery pack. The initial state of the CPCM was set as a liquid phase, and the insulating performance of the BTMS was investigated numerically, considering the CPCM solidifying from liquid phase to solid phase in a low-temperature environment. The numerical model was built, and calculations were performed using Ansys Fluent 19.2. The research results showed that a CPCM effectively can extend the time that the battery pack remains above 0°C by releasing a large amount of latent heat during the solidification process in a low-temperature environment. As the convective heat transfer coefficient increased, the insulation effect provided by CPCM to lithium-ion battery packs decreased, exacerbating the temperature inhomogeneity inside the low-temperature thermal management system. Increasing the thermal conductivity of the CPCM ensured that the maximum temperature difference of the battery pack during operation remained within a safe range. Finally, the simulation results indicated that adding different thicknesses of insulation materials at the periphery of the low-temperature thermal management system effectively can improve the insulation effect. However, it also is necessary to select the appropriate thickness of insulation materials in combination with the actual demand. This paper establishes a model based on CPCM for the low-temperature thermal management system of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries. The thermal insulation and temperature homogenization performance of the CPCM-based BTMS were analyzed under various conditions, including different ambient temperatures, convective heat transfer coefficients, and thermophysical properties of materials, as well as the addition of insulation layers, considering time-dependent variations. Based on this analysis, the physical requirements of CPCM and the package structure for BTMS under different operating conditions were determined. The simulation results demonstrate that the liquid-phase CPCM solidifies and releases the stored heat through latent heat to warm and insulate the battery when the discharging process is stopped at lower temperatures. This effectively extends the battery's holding time in the high-temperature domain and above 0°C. As the external convective heat transfer coefficient increases, the effectiveness of CPCM in insulating the battery decreases, exacerbating the temperature nonuniformity within the low-temperature thermal management system. Increasing the thermal conductivity of the CPCM ensures that the maximum temperature difference during battery operation remains within safe limits. In addition, the results indicate that the insulation effect can be improved significantly by adding an appropriate thickness of insulation material to the periphery of the thermal management system, based on specific requirements. Phase change microcapsules are a type of energy storage material that can affect temperature changes by changing its material state and releasing or absorbing latent heat. In this paper, the temperature effect of phase change microcapsules on permeable concrete is investigated. Cooling, heating, and snow melting tests were performed on ordinary permeable concrete and test blocks with different contents of phase change microcapsules. The results indicate that the addition of phase change microcapsules to ordinary permeable concrete has several benefits. First, it effectively raises the internal temperature of concrete in cold conditions. Second, it prolongs the heating duration of concrete in high-temperature environments. Last, it helps in reducing the maximum temperature reached by the concrete. Moreover, the heat storage capacity of phase change microcapsules prevents the refreezing of melted snow water within the concrete. With the increase of the content of phase change microcapsules, the temperature-regulating effect of the test blocks is improved. To sum up, phase change materials can exhibit temperature-regulating effect on permeable concrete under different environmental conditions and have wide applications in the design, manufacture, and performance research of permeable concrete. In this work, alumina foam ceramics (AFC) were prepared by foaming method, and AFC/salt composite phase change materials were prepared by melt infiltration method using AFC as skeleton materials. The results showed that AFC had good chemical compatibility with Na 2 SO 4 and NaCl. The salt contents of AFC/Na 2 SO 4 and AFC/NaCl were 37.8 wt% and 31.7 wt%, respectively, with compressive strength of 100.1 MPa and 72.8 MPa, thermal conductivity of 5.53 W/m·K and 6.40 W/m·K, and energy density of 1129 J/g and 1019 J/g, respectively. Due to the better wettability, AFC and Na 2 SO 4 form a chimeric structure, which has better binding and bonding strength, and is not prone to molten salt leakage. The high-temperature composite phase change materials (HCPCMs) were prepared from solid waste blast furnace slag (BFS) and NaCl-KCl binary eutectic salt to achieve efficient and cost-effective utilization. To ensure good chemical compatibility with chlorine salt, modifier fly ash (FA) was incorporated and subjected to high-temperature treatment for the processing of industrial solid waste BFS, which possesses a complex chemical composition. The HCPCMs were synthesized through a three-step process involving static melting, solid waste modification, and mixing–cold pressing–sintering. Then, the influence of the modification method and the amount of SiC thermal conductivity reinforced material on chemical compatibility and thermodynamic performance was explored. The results demonstrate that the predominant phase of the modified solid waste is Ca2Al2SiO7, which exhibits excellent chemical compatibility with chlorine salt. HCPCMs containing less than 50 wt.% chloride content exhibit good morphological stability without any cracks, with a melting temperature of 661.76 °C and an enthalpy value of 108.73 J/g. Even after undergoing 60 thermal cycles, they maintain good chemical compatibility, with leakage rates for melting and solidification enthalpies being only 6.3% and 0.23%, respectively. The equilibrium was achieved when 40 wt.% of chloride salt was encapsulated upon the addition of 10% of SiC, and the incorporation of SiC resulted in an enhancement of thermal conductivity for HCPCMs to 2.959 W/(m·K) at room temperature and 2.400 W/(m·K) at 200 °C, with an average increase of about 2 times. The cost of the prepared HCPCMs experienced a significant reduction of 81.3%, demonstrating favorable economic performance and promising prospects for application. To achieve sustainable development goals and meet the demand for clean and efficient energy utilization, it is imperative to advance the penetration of renewable energy in various sectors. Energy storage systems can mitigate the intermittent issues of renewable energy and enhance the efficiency and economic viability of existing energy facilities. Among various energy storage technologies, thermocline heat storage (THS) has garnered widespread attention from researchers due to its stability and economic advantages. Currently, there are only a few review articles focusing on THS, and there is a gap in the literature regarding the optimization design of THS systems. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the recent research progress in THS, elucidating its principles, thermal storage materials, applications, and optimization designs. The novelty of this work lies in the detailed classification and analysis of various optimization designs for THS, including tank shape, aspect ratio, inlet/outlet configuration, thermal energy storage materials arrangement, operating strategies, and numerical model optimization approaches. The limitations of existing research are also identified, and future perspectives are proposed, aiming to provide recommendations for THS research and contribute to the development and promotion of THS technology. Thermal energy storage (TES) is crucial in bridging the gap between energy demand and supply globally. Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants, employing molten salts for thermal storage, stand as an advanced TES technology. However, molten salts have drawbacks like corrosion, solidification at lower temperatures, and high costs. To overcome these limitations, research is focusing on alternative TES materials such as ceramic particles. These solids match molten salts in energy density and can withstand higher temperatures, making them well-suited for CSP systems. This study revolves around subjecting Solar Salt alone and Solar Salt alongside Volcanic Ash (VA) and Electric Arc Furnace Slag (EAFS) to a comprehensive thermal cycling test. This test is designed to assess the compatibility over the thermal cycles of the Solar Salt and the Solar Salt in contact with these solids in a CSP plant with a thermocline configuration. With a final thermal and chemical evaluation, our observations indicate that EAFS and VA demonstrate promising compatibility but an increase in the reduction rate of the Solar Salt due to a catalyst effect from EAFS in contact with the salt. The environmental impact caused by the intensive exploitation of fossil fuels to generate heat and electricity has already reached a critical level. Also, as the industrial sector is the largest energy consumer, mainly in the form of heat, it has then become compulsive to implement the use of renewable solar heat in industrial processes, such as those found in the food processing and beverages industries, which do not require high temperatures. Consequently, this study examines the viability of supplying heat as hot water at 80 °C and saturated steam at 160 °C to a medium-sized brewery factory through a hybrid solar plant composed of flat plate and parabolic trough collectors and sensible thermal energy storage. The study was conducted numerically using the meteorological conditions of a city different from that where the factory is located because it benefits from higher insolation levels. The mean annual solar fractions achieved were 49.9% for hot water production and 37.3% for steam generation, at a levelized cost of heat of 0.032 USD/kWh, which can be considered competitive if compared against the values reported in other similar solar projects. In light of global challenges such as the war in Ukraine and the depletion of fossil fuel resources, it is essential to explore sustainable energy solutions. Hybrid energy systems represent a potential solution, offering energy independence to urban housing estates and reducing CO2 emissions. This article aims to explore the feasibility of integrating photovoltaic systems (utilizing vacuum collectors) and combined utilities (system heat and electricity) in a hybrid setup, leveraging existing technical infrastructure with necessary modifications. A key aspect is to perform calculations on the amount of heat and electricity generated from these systems. The study analyzes the demand for heat and electricity among consumers compared to the estimated production from renewable sources. Calculations also include the potential energy savings and CO2 emission reductions achievable through the proposed solutions. The findings indicate that hybrid photovoltaic systems with heat storage could effectively address energy issues in urban housing estates, given adequate support and community involvement. This work is focused on a novel, promising low temperature phase change material (PCM), based on the eutectic Glauber's salt composition. To allow phase transition within the refrigeration range of temperatures of +5 °C to +12 °C, combined with a high repeatability of melting–freezing processes, and minimized subcooling, the application of three variants of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) with distinct molecular weights (700,000, 250,000, and 90,000) is considered. The primary objective is to optimize the stabilization of this eutectic PCM formulation, while maintaining the desired enthalpy level. Preparation methods are refined to ensure repeatability in mixing components, thereby optimizing performance and stability. Additionally, the influence of Na-CMC molecular weight on stabilization is examined through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), T-history, and rheology tests. The PCM formulation of interest builds upon prior research in which borax, ammonium chloride, and potassium chloride were used as additives to sodium sulfate decahydrate (Glauber's salt), prioritizing environmentally responsible materials. The results reveal that CMC with molecular weights of 250 kg/mol and 90 kg/mol effectively stabilize the PCM without phase separation issues, slowing crystallization kinetics. Conversely, CMC of 700 kg/mol proved ineffective due to the disruption of gel formation at its low gel point, hindering higher concentrations. Calculations of ionic concentration indicate higher Na ion content in PCM stabilized with 90 kg/mol CMC, suggesting increased ionic interactions and gel strength. A tradeoff is discovered between the faster crystallization in lower molecular weight CMC and the higher concentration required, which increases the amount of inert material that does not participate in the phase transition. After thermal cycling, the best formulation had a latent heat of 130 J/g with no supercooling, demonstrating excellent performance. This work advances PCM's reliability as a thermal energy storage solution for diverse applications and highlights the complex relationship between Na-CMC molecular weight and PCM stabilization. In recent years, there has been significant progress in the development and application of phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage. The new lauric acid (LA)/polyvinyl butyral (PVB)/graphene nanoplates (GNP) composite phase change materials (CPCM) are prepared using the solution blending method, in which LA acts as PCM, PVB serves as support material, and GNP is used as thermally conductive enhancer. The prepared CPCM with 80 wt% LA can retain stable shape without leakage. The Fourier‐transform infrared and X‐ray diffractometer results indicate that there is no chemical reaction among the various components of the CPCM. The differential scanning calorimeter results show the CPCM3 (with 80 wt% LA and 5 wt% GNP) has melting latent heat of 134.41 KJ Kg−1 with melting temperature of 41.73 °C. The thermal conductivity tests present that thermal conductivity of CPCM3 is 0.689 W (m K)−1, which is 3.83 times that of the PCM2. The thermogravimetric analyzer results verify that the CPCM possess good thermal stability within the operating temperature range of 35–45 °C without any degradation. The thermal cycling tests indicate that CPCM have good thermal reliability. In this study, novel tetradecylamine/MXene/cellulose nanocrystal composite phase change materials (TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs) were prepared using a vacuum impregnation method. For the first time, lightweight MXene/CNC composite aerogel was employed as a support material in energy storage, with TDA serving as the phase change material. The latent heat of TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs reached 221.5 J/g. Furthermore, the density of the MXene/CNC-2 composite aerogel was 0.0614 g/cm3, and its loading rate for TDA was as high as 90.6 wt%. Additionally, the thermal conductivity of TDA/MXene/CNC CPCM-5 was 0.491 W/(m·K), 1.87 times higher than that of pure TDA. The TDA/MXene/CNC CPCMs exhibited exceptional thermal stability up to 120 °C and maintained excellent shape stability at 60 °C. The composites exhibit a superior solar-thermal conversion ability with the conversion efficiency as high as 94.1%, The incorporation of MXene significantly enhances the photothermal conversion capability, providing an important avenue for the high-efficiency utilisation of solar energy. Thermal storage materials are typically made of materials with high thermal storage density, high thermal conductivity and high temperature stability. In this study, corundum-mullite composite thermal storage ceramics were prepared by solid-phase sintering using widely available and low-cost α-Al 2 O 3 , kaolin, and quartz as raw materials. The effects of silicon source and Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio on the physical properties and structural properties of corundum-mullite composite ceramics were investigated. The results showed that the A3 sample (α-Al 2 O 3 : 85.77 wt%, kaolin: 14.23 wt%) after sintering at 1650 °C had the excellent performance, with thermal conductivity of 15.01 W (m K)−1 (25 °C), thermal storage density of 965.15 kJ kg−1, and bending strength of 145.9 MPa. The multiple ions introduced by kaolin can effectively promote the liquid-phase mass transfer at high temperatures, accelerate the diffusion rate of Si4+, increase the growth rate of mullite, and accelerate the densification process of the samples, which in turn improves the physical properties of the samples. When used in a solar thermal storage system, the A3 sample per unit volume can provide 911.53 kW h of electricity to the grid, saving 112.12 kg of coal and reducing 358.78 kg of CO 2 emissions. The development of energy-dense, thermomechanically stable, and low-viscous phase change emulsions (PCMEs) is proposed as an alternative thermal energy storage solution for building air conditioning. A set of oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions with hexadecane concentration varied between 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 wt. % is prepared and characterized with respect to their physical, thermal, and rheological properties. The storage characteristics are evaluated in terms of storage density, phase transition behaviour, supercooling, and dynamic viscosity. A systematic comparison in terms of energy density between the PCMEs and water is carried out at different temperature conditions. For this purpose, the storage break-even temperature T BE is proposed as a novel parameter to determine suitable operating temperature ranges and cycling conditions. The cycle stability is evaluated by rheological measurements, applying thermomechanical loads to the samples for a high number of cycles. According to the results, the energy density of the PCMEs is always higher than that of water, when the minimum temperature used for the cycling is below the storage break-even temperature. The emulsion with 30 wt. % hexadecane fraction is considered particularly promising, thanks to its high stability when exposed to thermomechanical stress, relatively low viscosity between 10 and 22 mPa s (0–30°C), and a storage density of 98 MJ/m3 within a cycling temperature range of 12 K. Existing polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based phase change materials (PCMs) with recyclability are not chemically recyclable because the raw materials of the PCMs cannot be obtained after recycling. Herein, we used a facile method to prepare a PEG-based form-stable PCM (FSPCM) using mannitol as the supporting material. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding between mannitol and PEG is strong, which gives rise to a PCM solid state even at 90 °C and prevents the leakage that normally occurs with pure PEG. More importantly, the FSPCM can be chemically recycled using butyl acetate, which is a satisfactory solvent for PEG but cannot dissolve mannitol. Thus, PEG and mannitol are obtained, with recycling rates greater than 90% for each. Additionally, there are high latent heat values for this PEG-based FSPCM, as well as excellent thermal stability and thermal reliability, suggesting the remarkable ability for thermal energy storage and thermal management. In order to quench the thirst for efficient energy storage devices, a novel praseodymium-based state-ofthe-art three-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Pr(pdc)2]Me2NH2}n (YK-1), has been synthesized by using a simple solvothermal method employing a readily available ligand. YK-1 was characterised by single-crystal XRD and crystallographic analysis. The electrochemical measurements of YK-1 show that it exhibits a specific capacitance of 363.5 F g-1 at a current density of 1.5 A g-1 with 83.8% retention after 5000 cycles. In order to enhance its electrochemical performance for practical application, two composites of YK-1 with graphene oxide (GO) and functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotubes (FCNTs), namely YK-1@GO and YK-1@FCNT, were fabricated by employing a facile ultrasonication technique. The as-synthesized MOF and the composites were characterized by PXRD, FTIR, SEM, and TEM techniques. YK-1@GO and YK-1@FCNT offer enhanced specific capacitances of 488.2 F g-1 and 730.2 F g-1 at the same current density with 93.8% and 97.7% capacity retention after 5000 cycles, respectively (at 16 A g-1). Fascinated by the outstanding results shown by YK-1@FCNT, a symmetric supercapacitor device (SSC) based on it was fabricated. The assembled SSC achieved a remarkable energy density (87.6 W h kg-1) and power density (750.2 W kg-1) at a current density of 1 A g-1, along with very good cycling stability of 91.4% even after 5000 GCD cycles. The SSC device was able to power up several LED lights and even operated a DC brushless fan for a significant amount of time. The flexible mode of operation of coal-fired units can accommodate large-scale renewable power integration into the grid, providing more grid capacity. The flexibility transformation of coal-fired units in thermal power plants can be achieved through main steam extraction and reheated steam extraction. A 300 MW subcritical unit, 600 MW subcritical unit and 660 MW ultra-supercritical unit with six flexible operation modes were chosen as the research model to investigate the thermal adaptability for flexible operation. The results show that from the perspective of the source of steam extraction, the main steam extraction scheme is suitable for the flexible adjustment of peak load capacity, and the reheated extraction scheme is suitable for the flexible operation of low load and high thermal efficiency. Moreover, from the perspective of thermal performance adaptability, the 600 MW unit has a wider load regulation capacity than the 300 MW and 660 MW units, and is suitable as the peak shaving unit. Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) is one of the key technologies facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources and mitigating the climate crisis. Recently, Li4SiO4 has been reported to be a promising heat carrier material for TCES applications, owing to its moderate operation temperature and stability. During the synthetic processes, the properties of the Si source used directly influence the performance of derived Li4SiO4 materials; however, the internal relations and effects are not yet clear. Hence, in this work, six kinds of SiO2 sources with different phases, morphology, particle size, and surface area were selected to synthesize a Li4SiO4-based TCES heat carrier. The physicochemical properties of the SiO2 and the corresponding derived Li4SiO4 were characterized, and the comprehensive performance (e.g., heat storage/releasing capacity, rate, and cyclic stability) of the Li4SiO4 samples was systematically tested. It was found that the silica microspheres (SPs), which possess an amorphous phase, uniform micro-scale structure, and small particle size, could generate Li4SiO4 TCES materials with a highest initial capacity of 777.7 kJ/kg at 720 °C/900 °C under pure CO2. As a result, the SP-L showed an excellent cumulative heat storage amount of 5.84 MJ/kg within 10 heat-releasing/storage cycles, which was nearly 1.5 times greater than the value of Li4SiO4 derived from commonly used silicon dioxide. Furthermore, the effects of the utilized Si source on the performance of as-prepared Li4SiO4 and corresponding mechanisms were discussed, which offers guidance for the future selection of Si sources to produce high-performance Li4SiO4-based TCES heat carriers. Sewage sludge and red mud, as common industrial waste, have become a research hotspot in the field of achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, reducing carbon emissions, and solving environmental problems. However, their treatment and disposal have always been a difficult problem in the environmental field. Utilizing these two materials for thermal energy storage can not only improve energy utilization efficiency but also further reduce carbon emissions during their treatment process, providing a new approach for sustainable development in the industrial sector. This article summarizes the research progress for the resource recovery of sewage sludge and red mud for direct thermal energy recovery and composite phase change energy storage. After proper treatment, sludge and red mud can be directly used as energy storage materials. In addition, sludge and red mud can be combined with phase change materials to prepare composite materials with an excellent energy storage performance. This composite has broad application prospects in fields such as solar energy utilization and building energy efficiency. However, there are still some challenges and issues in this resource recovery and utilization, such as potential environmental pollution during the treatment process, the long-term stability of energy storage materials, and cost-effectiveness, which require further research and resolution. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the potential of sewage sludge and red mud as energy storage materials, to explore their feasibility and advantages in practical applications, and to reveal the research progress, technical challenges, and future development directions of these two materials in the field of thermal energy storage. The potential energy of compressed air represents a multi-application source of power. Historically employed to drive certain manufacturing or transportation systems, it became a source of vehicle propulsion in the late 19th century. During the second half of the 20th century, significant efforts were directed towards harnessing pressurized air for the storage of electrical energy. Today's systems, which are based on storing the air at a high pressure, are usually recognized as compressed air energy storage (CAES) installations. This paper aims to provide an overview of different technologies that take advantage of the energy accumulated in the compressed air. Particular attention is paid to the CAES installations that are working as electrical energy storage systems (EESs). These systems, developed originally as large capacity (>100 MWe) and fuel-based installations, may soon become fully scalable, highly efficient, and fuel-free electrical energy storage systems. To present this opportunity, a thorough review encompassing previous and up-to-date advancements in their development was carried out. In particular, CAES concepts, such as diabatic (D-CAES), adiabatic (A-CAES), and isothermal (I-CAES), are described in detail. This review also provides the detailed characteristics of the crucial elements of these configurations, including compressors, expanders, air storage chambers, and thermal storage tanks. Knowledge of these components and their role allows us to understand the main challenges behind the further development of the mentioned CAES setups. Apart from the CAES systems that are designed as EES systems, this paper describes other prospective technologies that utilize the energy of pressurized air. Accordingly, compressed air cars and their key elements are explained in detail. Moreover, the technology renowned as wave-driven compressed air energy storage (W-CAES) is described as well, indicating that the utilization of pressurized air represents a viable option for converting ocean energy into electrical power. This work proposes a pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) integrated into the power block of a concentrated solar power plant. The power block operates under a Hybrid Rankine–Brayton (HRB) cycle using propane as the working fluid. During PTES charging, some thermal energy is obtained from a dedicated compressor (additional to that of the HRB cycle), which is stored. During discharge, both compressors (HRB and PTES) are off, restoring the consumed energy and resulting in about a 13% increase in nominal power output. The system is also able to store thermal energy that would otherwise be rejected through the condenser if the PTES were turned off, leading to efficiency improvements in some cases. Considering the 2022 Spanish electricity market prices, the proposed PTES integration with 4 h of storage is feasible. The levelized cost of storage is calculated and compared to those of other PTES systems, achieving around a 40% reduction compared with an equivalent PTES Rankine. This manuscript details a comprehensive investigation into the synthesis, structural characterization, thermal stability, and optical properties of nickel-containing hybrid perovskites, namely CH3NH3NiCl3, CsNiCl3, and CH3NH3NiBrCl2. The focal point of this study is to unravel the intricate crystal structures, thermal behaviors, and optical characteristics of these materials, thereby elucidating their potential application in energy conversion and storage technologies. X-ray powder diffraction measurements confirm that CH3NH3NiCl3 adopts a crystal structure within the Cmcm space group, while CsNiCl3 is organized in the P63/mmc space group, as reported previously. Such structural diversity underscores the complex nature of these perovskites and their potential for tailored applications. Thermal analysis further reveals the stability of CH3NH3NiCl3 and CH3NH3NiBrCl2, which begin to decompose at 260 °C and 295 °C, respectively. The optical absorption properties of these perovskites studied by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy revealed the bands characteristic of Ni2+ ions in an octahedral environment. Notably, these absorption bands exhibit subtle shifts upon bromide substitution, suggesting that optical properties can be finely tuned through halide modification. Such tunability is paramount for the design and development of materials with specific optical requirements. By offering a detailed examination of these properties, the study lays the groundwork for future advancements in material science, particularly in the development of innovative materials for sustainable energy technologies. In the selection and design of ionic liquids (ILs) for various applications, including heat transfer fluids, thermal energy storage materials, fuel cells, and solvents for chemical processes, heat capacity is a key thermodynamic property. While several attempts have been made to develop predictive models for the estimation of the heat capacity of ILs in their liquid phase, none so far have been reported for the ILs' solid crystal phase. This is particularly important for applications where ILs will be used for thermal energy storage in the solid phase. For the first time, a model has been developed and used for the prediction of crystal phase heat capacity based on extending and modifying a previously developed hybrid group contribution model (GCM) for liquid phase heat capacity. A comprehensive database of over 5000 data points with 71 unique crystal phase ILs, comprising 42 different cations and 23 different anions, was used for parameterization and testing. This hybrid model takes into account the effect of the anion core, cation core, and subgroups within cations and anions, in addition to the derived indirect parameters that reflect the effects of branching and distribution around the core of the IL. According to the results, the developed GCM can reliably predict the crystal phase heat capacity with a mean absolute percentage error of 6.78%. The Mn-Fe oxide material possesses the advantages of abundant availability, low cost, and non-toxicity as an energy storage material, particularly addressing the limitation of sluggish reoxidation kinetics observed in pure manganese oxide. However, scaling up the thermal energy storage (TCES) system poses challenges to the stability of the reactivities and mechanical strength of materials over long-term cycles, necessitating their resolution. In this study, Mn-Fe granules were fabricated with a diameter of approximately 2 mm using the feasible and scalable drop technique, and the effects of Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) and SiO2 doping, at various doping ratios ranging from 1–20 wt%, were investigated on both the anti-sintering behavior and mechanical strength. In a thermal gravimetric analyzer, the redox reaction tests showed that both the dopants led to an enhancement in the reoxidation rates when the doping ratios were in an appropriate range, while they also brought about a decrease in the reduction rate and energy storage density. In a packed-bed reactor, the results of five consecutive redox tests showed a similar pattern to that in a thermal gravimetric analyzer. Additionally, the doping led to the stable reduction/oxidation reaction rates during the cyclic tests. In the subsequent 120 cyclic tests, the Si-doped granules exhibited volume expansion with a decreased crushing strength, whereas the YSZ-doped granules experienced drastic shrinkage with an increase in the crushing strength. The 1 wt% Si and 2 wt% Si presented the best synthetic performance, which resulted from the milder sintering effects during the long-term cyclic tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molten nitrates or nitrate–nitrite mixtures have been used as heat transfer fluid as well as thermal energy storage medium in concentrated solar power plants and other industrial applications. However, containment materials in contact with these molten salts are subjected to molten salt corrosion, which has been a concern over the years. In this investigation, the corrosion behavior of pure Ni, Fe, Cr, and Fe‐5Cr alloy (in weight percent) has been examined at 400°C in molten nitrates using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and gravimetric tests. It is shown that Ni, Fe, and Fe‐5Cr exhibit mass gain, with the best corrosion resistance for Ni followed by Fe‐5Cr and Fe, while pure Cr goes through fast dissolution, forming hexavalent chromium product K3Na(CrO4)2. The increase of salt basicity from Solar Salt to Hitec could accelerate the dissolution of Cr. Nevertheless, the formation of an inner Cr‐containing scale could still offer the alloy good protection because the external insoluble Ni or Fe oxides can protect it from dissolution. This paper proposes a new correlation to evaluate the heat transfer coefficient between a vertical wall containing a phase change material (PCM) and air in a square enclosure. This correlation was determined in order to simulate the transient process during PCM discharge and its effect on the heat transfer inside the cavity without using complex CFD models. A 2D CFD model based on the resolution of Navier–Stokes and energy equations inside the air and the PCM was previously validated. It was used to generate numerical data in order to build the proposed heat transfer correlation. The new correlation is Nu = 0.186 · Ra 0.28 θ 0.271 Ste 0.022 valid for: 10 5 ≤ Ra ≤ 4.310 7 , 0.05 ≤ θ ≤ 1 and 0.05 ≤ ste ≤ 0.6 . The accuracy of the proposed correlation versus the correlations established without phase change is analysed through a simplified model considering only the PCM layer and replacing the air cavity by a flux condition with an appropriate heat transfer coefficient. Water/CeO2-MWCNTs hybrid (NF) is a novel type of NF that has potential applications in heat transfer and thermal energy storage. However, the thermal conductivity (ThC) of this NF is not well understood. In this study, we aim to estimate the stability and investigate the ThC of water/CeO2-MWCNTs hybrid NF experimentally. We prepared the NF by dispersing CeO2-MWCNTs nanoparticles in deionized water using ultrasonication spanning 5–30 min. We measured the ThC of the NF at different temperatures and concentrations using a transient hot-wire method. Assessment of hybrid NF stability involved measurements of zeta potential and particle size distribution through dynamic light scattering (DLS). Meanwhile, ThC assessments were conducted across different solid volume fractions (0.007 ≤ SVF ≤ 0.112%) and temperatures (20–50 °C). Results underscored the hybrid NF's impressive stability and notably enhanced ThC. Longer sonication times, particularly at 30 min, positively impacted both stability and ThC. SVF and temperature also exerted substantial effects, with the most significant enhancement occurring at 0.112% SVF and 50 °C. To forecast the hybrid NF's ThC, a novel correlation and artificial neural network model were developed with a commendable level of accuracy (R-squared = 0.9918 and maximum deviation of 0.438%). We compared our results with similar hybrid NFs reported in the literature and discussed the possible mechanisms of ThC enhancement. Due to the volatile nature of renewable energy sources (RES), energy storage systems (ESS) are the primary impetus for increased dependence on RES in current power networks. Because of their quick responsiveness and rapid transition from charge to discharge in less than 1 ms, batteries are necessary even in the presence of alternative storage devices. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have demonstrated their viability as ESS for RES. Given the significance of LIBs, it was vital to correctly and effectively quantify their costs in energy systems. Most studies did not offer a true real-world assessment of these batteries' aging but instead averaged their performance indices, which vary substantially depending on the system's working circumstances such as temperature, voltage, state of charge, and current level. Failure to use precise values for each charging/discharging operation might result in disastrous judgments and future techno-economic issues. This paper provides a novel and highly accurate piecewise modeling of LIBs for each charging and discharging operation based on real-world operational conditions. This novel aging model is used for calculating hourly aging and its impact on energy costs. The musical chair algorithm (MCA) is used to determine the optimal parameters' values of the LIB's model and the appropriate size of autonomous hybrid RES. When compared to other optimization techniques, the findings of optimal parameter determination using MCA revealed an 80% reduction in convergence time and better accuracy. The novel proposed aging model of the batteries predicts a 60% cost share of the battery, meanwhile, the existing strategy predicts 51% only. Zirconia‐corundum‐mullite composites were prepared from andalusite, ZrO2, and α‐Al2O3 and evaluated for application as solar thermal storage materials in this study. The effects of ZrO2 concentration (0–25 wt%) and sintering temperature(1500–1650°C) on the bending strength, phase composition, microstructure, dimensional stability, and thermal shock resistance of the samples were investigated. The results showed that sample C2 (containing 10 wt% ZrO2) sintered at 1600°C exhibited the best properties. A portion of Y2O3 existed in ZrO2, which excited a small amount of t‐ZrO2 in the sample after sintering, while the other portion of Y2O3 was separated from ZrO2 and participated in the formation of a high‐temperature liquid phase. The liquid phase reduced the dimensional stability of the sample. However, the liquid phase could also promote sintering, reducing the optimal sintering temperature, with lower sintering temperatures increasing the dimensional stability of the sample. Once again, the C2 sample exhibited the highest thermal shock resistance, with a strength loss of 2.76 MPa after 30 thermal shock tests. The thermal storage density(25–1100°C) of C2 was 1121 kJ/kg. Using ethylene glycol solution as the base fluid has demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing the freezing point of the continuous phase in phase change emulsions. This, in turn, enhances the stability of the emulsion at low temperatures, which has significant implications for applications requiring emulsions in such conditions. However, there is a notable absence of comprehensive studies on this topic. In this study, we utilized the phase conversion method to prepare hexadecane emulsions with varying mass fractions, using ethylene glycol aqueous solution as the base fluid. The impact of the ratio of hexadecane to surfactant and the formulation of the surfactants on the dispersion stability of the emulsions were systematically investigated and optimized. Furthermore, the phase change and thermal properties of the emulsions were examined. Based on these results, the energy storage capacity and pumping power of the emulsions were calculated and compared with those of the base fluid. The results indicate that as the mass fraction of phase change material (PCM) increases, the energy storage capacity and viscosity of the emulsions also increase, while the thermal conductivity decreases. Additionally, the energy storage capacities of the emulsions surpass that of the base fluid, and the pumping power is reduced at relatively low PCM mass fractions and within the heat storage temperature range. This paper aims to study the influence of novel macro encapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) on the mechanical and thermal properties of concretes. Thermal energy storage aggregates (TESAs) were prepared using vacuum impregnation. The PCMs were a lauric-myristic acid (LA-MA) eutectic mixture and coconut oil, pure or mixed, and are impregnated in diatomite as a supporting material. Thermal energy storage concrete (TESC) was made by replacing gravel in ordinary concrete with TESAs. Thermal and mechanical properties of prepared TESC were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, compressive strength, and thermal performance analysis. The results showed that the melting temperature of coconut oil and the eutectic mixture of LA-MA were 25.2°C and 34.5°C, respectively. TESC with 80 wt.% of gravel replaced with TESA had a compressive strength of higher than 17 MPa, which indicates its usability as structural concrete. The results of thermal performance analysis also revealed that prepared TESC had the capability of storing thermal energy and can reduce energy consumption by damping temperature fluctuations caused by the outside environment. In this paper, a thermal energy storage concrete (TESC) was prepared by embedding phase change materials (PCMs) in diatomite used in TESC. Using this type of concrete in the building will reduce the energy consumption of the building and increase its thermal comfort. The produced concrete containing 80 wt.% of gravel replaced with diatomite saturated with PCM had a desirable 28-day cylindrical sample strength of 21 MPa. In the designed thermal test, the time required for this concrete to reach 40°C is almost twice that of concrete without PCM. Dielectric energy storage capacitors are promising avenues for high power density and fast charge/discharge applications. This study focused on the deposition of Bi 3.25 La 0.75 Ti 3 O 12 (BLT) films onto Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si substrates by a sol-gel technology. Through the synergistic strategy of interface engineering and the preferred orientation of BLT film, the residual polarization was minimized, and the breakdown field strength was enhanced. As a result, the recoverable energy density (U rec) was significantly improved to 62.97 J/cm3 with a high energy storage efficiency (η) of 85.88 %. Notably, the synthesized BLT film exhibited excellent temperature (25–150 °C) and frequency (100 Hz-10 kHz) stability of U rec (>30 J/cm3) and η (>75 %) at ∼2200 kV/cm. The finding demonstrates the potential of BLT thin film as a lead-free material for the next generation of pulse power capacitors. Overall, the synergistic approach of interface engineering and preferred orientation proves to be an effective way to improve the performance of dielectric energy storage capacitors. Dielectric capacitors with rapid discharge rates and high power density are the basis for advanced pulsed power systems. Sr 0.7 Bi 0.2 TiO 3 (SBT) is expected to be used in energy storage capacitors owing to the small hysteresis and high energy storage efficiency (η). Nevertheless, the low breakdown strength (BDS) limits the enhancement of energy storage density. This study explores the potential of Ho 2 O 3 -modified SBT to address this limitation. Introducing Ho reduces oxygen vacancies, decreases electrical conductivity, and increases thermal conductivity, thus enhancing BDS. The enhancement mechanism of electrical performance is studied through microscopic morphology analysis, structural refinement and numerical simulation. The Sr 0.7 Bi 0.15 Ho 0.05 TiO 3 exhibits remarkable properties, including ultra-low loss tanδ (0.1 %), ultra-high η (95.8 %), and outstanding thermal, frequency, and cycling stability in energy storage properties. Additionally, Sr 0.7 Bi 0.15 Ho 0.05 TiO 3 possesses a high power density (67.9 MW/cm3) and a rapid discharge rate (0.03 μs). This paper applies the phase-change cold storage technology to refrigerated transportation to reduce the energy consumption. Experiment data showed that the electronic expansion valve can be randomly adjusted to simulate the temperature within negative 25 °C to negative 5 °C, and a system for defrosting at low temperature and auxiliary refrigeration based on phase-change thermal energy storage of diethylene glycol were developed to guarantee the reliability of the cold chain system. Energy absorption and flow through a nest is an important aspect of embryonic development in many reptile species including turtles. To date, few studies have explicitly attempted to quantify the energy flow through turtle nests, opting instead for the simplified approach offered by temperature index models. However, the quantification of the energy can provide an explicit abiotic link that can link biological models to biometeorological and ecohydrological processes and models. We investigated the energy flow through turtle nests occupying different bedrock morphologies within a Canadian Shield Rock Barren landscape, in Ontario, Canada. The taxons studied were Spotted Turtle (Clemmys guttata), Midland Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta marginata), and Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii). Nest temperature and soil moisture were measured in 2018 and 2019 using sensors placed in the soil adjacent to 12 turtle nest cavities. Three main rock morphologies were identified for each nest location, Crevice, Ledge, and Flat types, that are in order of decreasing bedrock percentage contact with the nest site. Ground heat flux and change in heat storage were determined using the calorimetric method for each nest, while the direction of energy flux between the atmosphere and the underlying rock was also determined. The Crevice nest morphology experienced the lowest ground heat flux on average (1.56 × 10−1 W m−2) and lowest cumulative heat storage (230 MJ) compared to the Flat (440 MJ) and Ledge (331 MJ) nests. However, over the diurnal cycle, large heat gains by Flat nests were mostly balanced out by nighttime heat losses. While Crevice nests saw the lowest daily heat storage gains, they experienced much lower heat losses over the evening period compared to the other nest types. Furthermore, we found that 59% of the energy is directed from the underlying bedrock into the Crevice nest, highlighting the importance of the bedrock in controlling thermal dynamics in the turtle nesting habitat. The lower variability in energy parameters for Crevice nest types can be attributed to higher amounts of nest‐to‐bedrock contact, compared to the flat nest types. Our results indicate that Crevice morphology may be ideal for turtles nesting at their northern limits because minimal heat loss during the evening can result in a more stable thermal incubation environment. Future conservation and habitat restoration efforts should consider the importance of bedrock morphology and prioritize the protection of Crevice nest sites. Furthermore, this work highlights important opportunities for potential interdisciplinary work between ecologists, climatologists, biologists, and hydrologists, specifically the integration of ecohydrological and biological models. Evaluating uncertainties of geological features on fluid temperature and pressure changes in a reservoir plays a crucial role in the safe and sustainable operation of high-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES). This study introduces a new automated surface fitting function in the Python API (application programming interface) of Gmsh (v4.11) to simulate the impacts of structural barriers and variations of the reservoir geometries on thermohydraulic behaviour in heat storage applications. These structural features cannot always be detected by geophysical exploration but can be present due to geological complexities. A Python workflow is developed to implement an automated mesh generation routine for various geological scenarios. This way, complex geological models and their inherent uncertainties are transferred into reservoir simulations. The developed meshing workflow is applied to two case studies: (1) Greater Geneva Basin with the Upper Jurassic ("Malm") limestone reservoir and (2) the 5° eastward-tilted DeepStor sandstone reservoir in the Upper Rhine Graben with a uniform thickness of 10 m. In the Greater Geneva Basin example, the top and bottom surfaces of the reservoir are randomly varied by ± 10 and ± 15 m , generating a total variation of up to 25 % from the initially assumed 100 m reservoir thickness. The injected heat plume in this limestone reservoir is independent of the reservoir geometry variation, indicating the limited propagation of the induced thermal signal. In the DeepStor reservoir, a vertical sub-seismic fault juxtaposing the permeable sandstone layers against low permeable clay-marl units is added to the base case model. The fault is located in distances varying from 4 to 118 m to the well to quantify the possible thermohydraulic response within the model. The variation in the distance between the fault and the well resulted in an insignificant change in the thermal recovery (∼ 1.5 %) but up to a ∼ 10.0 % pressure increase for the (shortest) distance of 4 m from the injection well. Modelling the pressure and temperature distribution in the 5° tilted reservoir, with a well placed in the centre of the model, reveals that heat tends to accumulate in the updip direction, while pressure increases in the downdip direction. Phase change material (PCM) based thermal energy storage (TES) is an important solution to the waste of heat and intermittency of new energy sources. However, the thermal conductivity of most PCMs is low, which severely affects the thermal energy storage performance. Oscillation of the tube bundles in a TES unit can intensify the convection of liquid PCM and, therefore, enhance heat transfer. However, the energy storage performance of bundled-tube TES systems in response to oscillation at different amplitudes and frequencies has not been well understood yet, and the optimum time to apply the oscillation during phase transition remains unexplored. To address this issue, this present study was carried out. First, the melting behaviour of PCM with oscillation starting at different times was investigated. Then, the influences of oscillation frequency and amplitude on the melting performance were explored. Finally, the solidification behaviour of PCM with oscillation starting at different times was examined. Results show that the oscillation can accelerate the phase transition process by enhancing convective heat transfer. Compared to the case without oscillation, the complete melting and solidification times are reduced by 8.2 and 6.7% for the case with oscillation starting at 200 s, respectively. The effect of oscillation frequency on the melting enhancement is negligible, while the oscillation amplitude has an important effect on the melting enhancement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The intensive development of renewable energy sources and the decreasing efficiency of conventional energy sources are reducing the flexibility of the electric power system. It becomes necessary to develop energy storage systems that allow reducing the differences between generation and energy demand. This article presents a multivariant analysis of an adiabatic compressed air energy storage system. The system uses a post-mining shaft as a reservoir of compressed air and also as a location for the development of a heat storage tank. Consideration was given to the length of the discharge stage, which directly affects the capital expenditure and operating schedule of the system. The basis for the analyses was the in-house numerical model, which takes into account the variability of air parameters during system operation. The numerical model also includes calculations of Thermal Energy Storage's transient performance. The energy efficiency of the system operating on a daily cycle varies from 67.9% to 70.3%. Various mechanisms for economic support of energy storage systems were analyzed. The levelized cost of storage varies, depending on the variant, from 75.86 EUR/MWh for the most favorable case to 223.24 EUR/MWh for the least favorable case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nearly zero-emission buildings (nZEBs) are increasingly being constructed in Europe. There are also incentives to refurbish older buildings and transform them into nZEBs. However, permission is not always granted for their connection to the grid to infuse surplus photovoltaic electricity due to the grid being overloaded with a large number of renewables. In this study, the case of a refurbished school building in Central Greece is examined. After refurbishing it, a significant amount of photovoltaic electricity surplus is observed during the summer and neutral months, which cannot be exported to the grid. The absence of an adequate battery storage capacity resulted in the rejection of an application for exporting the school's surplus to the network and the photovoltaic installation staying idle. An alternative approach is proposed in this work, involving a shift in the export of the photovoltaic electricity surplus to the evening hours, in order for the school to be granted permission to export it to the network. To this end, an optimal battery storage size is sought by employing a building energy system simulation. The mode of operation of the battery designed for this application is set to discharge daily, in order to export the electricity surplus in the afternoon hours to the evening hours, when it is favorable for the network. Additionally, the optimal size of the thermal energy storage of the heating system is studied to further improve its energy efficiency. Our battery and storage tank size optimization study shows that a significant battery capacity is required, with 12 kWh/kWp photovoltaic panels being recommended for installation. The ever-decreasing cost of battery installations results in the net present value (NPV) of the additional investment for the battery installation becoming positive. The solution proposed forms an alternative path to further increase the penetration of renewables in saturated networks in Greece by optimizing battery storage capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
