On the fringe of the city centre of Oulu, Finland, stands a peculiar memorial commemorating the last death sentence by hanging in Finland. Here people remembered the ill-fate of Taavetti Lukkarinen, a young man in his early 30s, who was hanged for high treason by Russian officers in 1916. In 2014, archaeological excavation at the hanging tree memorial revealed an interesting group of finds consisting of a deliberately fractured proximal end of a calf tibia with two shards of clear glass and an iron wire inserted into its marrow channel, in addition to a rubber shoe heel pad. These finds can be interpreted as a deposit hidden in the base of the memorial to tie the presumably restless soul to the monument. Examples of this kind of magical thinking with connections to, for example, concealed shoes, are known from different parts of the world. The memorial of Taavetti Lukkarinen may therefore be regarded as an example of a place where both individual people and the society tried to deal with a dark and shameful part of their past. The article describes the retelling of a story of rumrunning along the British Columbia-Alberta border in the Crowsnest Pass in the early 1920s in the opera "Filumena," by John Murrell, and the play "Whiskey Six Cadenza," by Sharon Pollock. The libretto for the opera captures the passion and pathos of the exceptional true-life story of Filumena, the last woman to be hanged for murder in Canada. The play, on the other hand, dramatizes the story as the consequence of personal choices complicated by socio-political forces.

The article reports that Indiana general assembly has enacted a large number of laws. One of the most important of these laws provides for the establishment of a state penal farm. It is to be known as the Indiana State Farm and is intended for the care and confinement of male prisoners over sixteen years of age, convicted of any violation of law formerly punished by jail or workhouse sentence. If the sentence is for sixty days or less, sentence to the state farm is optional. It is provided that the site shall be chosen by a commission with a view to furnishing employment for the inmates in various forms of industry, such as farming, fruit growing, stock raising, brick making and the preparation of road and paving material. By Senate Bill No.13, approved March 15, 1913 punishment by hanging is abolished and electrocution is substituted. By Senate Bill No. 203, approved March 5, 1913 it is provided that boards of county commissioners may arrange with the managers of the state prison and reformatory to secure prisoners for work on public highways, whenever there is no labor within the institutions named at which they can be employed.

We present a case where a 54-year-old man suffering from haemorrhoids, committed suicide by hanging. Gravitational forces due to the upright position of the body facilitated post-mortem per-rectal bleeding from the ulcerated haemorrhoids. The bleeding stained his under garment and wrap around cloth. Frank blood was also seen on the floor beneath the hanging body. The blood at the crime scene was wrongly interpreted by the investigating police as that due to self-inflicted injury or possibly case of homicide followed by post-mortem suspension of the body. Observation of the crime scene by forensic medicine experts and subsequent autopsy findings revealed that the bleeding was from the haemorrhoids. This case is reported for its rarity, for the awareness of the possible post-mortem haemorrhoidal bleeding artefact, to explain the circumstances of such a possibility, and to emphasize the importance of involving forensic medicine experts as a part of the crime scene investigation team.
