This ethnographic case study investigates the professional, locational and cultural understandings teachers need when beginning regional, rural, and remote teaching and living. Drawing from the experiences of recently graduated early career teachers in regional, rural, and remote teaching positions, the study sought to identify key learnings and strategies for surviving and thriving in regional, rural, and remote communities with the aim of better preparing preservice teachers for placements and future employment in these locations. Most early career teachers in this study would recommend regional, rural, and remote teaching positions to preservice teachers, describing the experience as rewarding, challenging and professionally developing. The importance of building relationships and immersing oneself in community were salient in the data. Analysis revealed a need for pre-determinations in five areas when preparing for RRR teaching positions: social (building networks and making friends), geographical (exploring the local area and getting involved in community), emotional (positive mindset and getting out of your comfort zone), personal (healthy habits and resilience), and cultural (understanding community). There is an evident opportunity to help pre-service teachers prepare for regional, rural, and remote experiences by considering these five pre-determinations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: In case of soft tissue sarcomas (STS), an en-bloc resection with safe margins is recommended. To ensure safe removal without tumor rupture, STS of the groin area, retroperitoneal or pelvic mesenchymal tumors may require incision or resection of the inguinal ligament. Solid reconstruction is mandatory to prevent early and late postoperative femoral hernias. We present here a new technique of inguinal ligament reconstruction. Methods: Between September 2020 and September 2022, patients undergoing incision and/or resection of inguinal ligaments during a wide en-bloc resection of STS of the groin area in the Department of General Surgery in Strasbourg were included. All patients had an inguinal ligament reconstruction with biosynthetic slowly resorbable mesh shaped as a hammock, pre- or intraperitoneally, associated or not with loco-regional pedicled muscular flaps. Results: A total of 7 hammock mesh reconstructions were performed. One or several flaps were necessary in 57% of cases (4 patients): either for inguinal ligament reconstruction only (n = 1), for recovering of femoral vessels (n = 1), and for both ligament reconstruction and defect covering (n = 2). The major morbidity rate was 14.3% (n = 1), related to a thigh surgical site infection due to sartorius flap infarction. After a median follow-up of 17.8 months (range 7–31), there was neither early nor late occurrence of post-operative femoral hernia. Conclusions: This is a new surgical tool for inguinal ligament reconstruction with the implementation of a biosynthetic slowly resorbable mesh shaped as a hammock, which should be compared to other techniques. This article is a reflection on early colonial industries as caring labor rather than just commodity production or resistance. We draw on Indigenous philosophies of relations and Amazonian ontologies to foreground care and frame the Caribbean material record. We investigate how traditional things such as hammocks and cassava bread produced by a sixteenth‐century encomienda population on Mona Island, part of the Puerto Rican archipelago, quickly became part and parcel of free and unfree contexts, extending sensory environments and shaping conditions of interaction throughout the Caribbean. Consideration of traditional things and ways they are incorporated within new assemblages of people and places reveals alternative world‐making projects, a speculative rejoinder to singular narratives of exploitation. This article, titled "The 3Hs - home, hammocks and happiness," discusses the efforts of the University College Dublin's biomedical facility to improve the welfare and environment of the animals in their care. The facility has implemented an enrichment program that includes various forms of environmental enrichment such as hammocks, vet beds, climbing ropes, play balls, sand pits, and additional nesting material. They also use playpens for rats, which contain toys like ropes, balls, baths, sand pits, and hammocks. The article highlights the benefits of these initiatives, including a more relaxed environment for researchers, increased job satisfaction, and improved quality of life for the animals. Parallel Coordinate Plots (PCP) are a valuable tool for exploratory data analysis of high-dimensional numerical data. The use of PCPs is limited when working with categorical variables or a mix of categorical and continuous variables. In this article, we propose Generalized Parallel Coordinate Plots (GPCP) to extend the ability of PCPs from just numeric variables to dealing seamlessly with a mix of categorical and numeric variables in a single plot. In this process we find that existing solutions for categorical values only, such as hammock plots or parsets become edge cases in the new framework. By focusing on individual observations rather than a marginal frequency we gain additional flexibility. The establishment of a resistor network model has become a sharp edge to solve complex scientific problems. In this paper, we introduce Chebyshev polynomials to express the potential formula of the hammock resistor network and improve the general solution of the hammock resistor network. Moreover, through the change in different parameters, special potential formulas are proposed and displayed in 3D dynamic view. A fast algorithm of the calculating potential is given by using the matrix equation model, discrete cosine transform-II, and the fast matrix-vector multiplication. Finally, we show the advantages of our improved potential formula and fast algorithm by the calculation efficiency of the three methods. Introduction: The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), originally designed in the United States of America, contains items on dysphasia and dysarthria that are deemed culturally unsuitable for the Singapore context. We compared the error rates of dysphasia objects, dysphasia phrases and dysarthria words between the original and alternative items in a cohort of Singaporean subjects without dysphasia or dysarthria. Methods: In this prospective study, 140 English-speaking Singaporean subjects without impairments of dysphasia or dysarthria had an assessment of NIHSS items 9 and 10 using the original and alternative items. Paired analyses were conducted for comparison of error rates. Results: The error rates were high for four original dysphasia objects (Hammock: 62.9%, Cactus: 38.6%, Feather: 23.6%, Glove: 20.7%) and significantly lower for alternative items (Snail: 5%, Horse: 1.4%, Hanger: 1.4%, Car: 0%) (P < 0.001). For dysphasia phrases and dysarthria words, the error rates were low and there were no differences in error rates between the original and alternative items. Conclusion: There are cultural issues with several dysphasia objects in the original NIHSS as evidenced by the high error rates, which were lowered with more culturally suitable alternatives. Research has shown there are numerous welfare and scientific benefits to housing rats in more enriched and environmentally complex housing opposed to conventional housing. With the aim of increasing environmental complexity providing opportunities for climbing and exploring and providing additional cover, a hammock prototype was designed to implement into the double decker rat cages. The hammock was trialled in a group of female rats to assess durability, impact on behaviour and preference over other shelter enrichment items: • tunnels • rat corner homes The number of observed enrichment interactions indicated a strong preference for the bottom tier of the hammock, suggesting the hammock is a successful enrichment item. Many properties of a module can be expressed in terms of the dimension of the vector space obtained by applying a finitely presented functor to that module. For example, the dimension of the kernel, image or cokernel of the multiplication map given by an algebra element; or the number of summands of a certain type when the module is considered as a module over a subalgebra. When the indecomposable modules over the algebra are arranged in the Auslander-Reiten quiver, the support of the finitely presented functor typically has the shape of a hammock, spanned between sources and sinks. There may also be tangents which are meshes where the hammock function at the middle term exceeds the sum of the values at the start and end terms. We describe how sources, sinks and tangents of the hammock relate to the modules which define the projective resolution of the finitely presented functor. The key tool is the Cokernel Complex Lemma which links the values of the hammock function to the Auslander-Reiten structure of the category. We are also interested in exact subcategories of module categories which have Auslander-Reiten sequences. The study seeks to discuss the social, cultural, and economic organization and contact between indigenous Warao women and the buriti palm, from which they derive their sustenance, shelter and the way in which it portrays the mythical relationship with all appropriation to meet needs. Furthermore, buriti is a source of income, through handicrafts, clothing and hammocks, the construction of houses, and a source of food. The analysis of the geographical category will be based on the concept of territoriality, through the territorial markers in the related studies by Almeida Silva (2010). Finally, the study was guided by bibliographical research, with data collected through theses, articles, published in the scientific and academic environment, with a qualitative nature and phenomenological analysis, in order to highlight human events in the midst of migratory manifestations. Introduction: Mechanical forces provide critical biological signals to cells. Within the distal lung, tensile forces act across the basement membrane and epithelial cells atop. Stretching devices have supported studies of mechanical forces in distal lung epithelium to gain mechanistic insights into pulmonary diseases. However, the integration of curvature into devices applying mechanical forces onto lung epithelial cell monolayers has remained challenging. To address this, we developed a hammock-shaped platform that offers desired curvature and mechanical forces to lung epithelial monolayers.We developed hammocks using polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based membranes and magnetic-particle modified silicone elastomer films within a 48-well plate that mimic the alveolar curvature and tensile forces during breathing. These hammocks were engineered and characterized for mechanical and cell-adhesive properties to facilitate cell culture. Using human small airway epithelial cells (SAECs), we measured monolayer formation and mechanosensing using F-Actin staining and immunofluorescence for cytokeratin to visualize intermediate filaments.We demonstrate a multi-functional design that facilitates a range of curvatures along with the incorporation of magnetic elements for dynamic actuation to induce mechanical forces. Using this system, we then showed that SAECs remain viable, proliferate, and form an epithelial cell monolayer across the entire hammock. By further applying mechanical stimulation via magnetic actuation, we observed an increase in proliferation and strengthening of the cytoskeleton, suggesting an increase in mechanosensing.This hammock strategy provides an easily accessible and tunable cell culture platform for mimicking distal lung mechanical forces in vitro. We anticipate the promise of this culture platform for mechanistic studies, multi-modal stimulation, and drug or small molecule testing, extendable to other cell types and organ systems.Methods: Mechanical forces provide critical biological signals to cells. In this paper, we develop a new method for evaluating the reliability polynomial of a hammock network. The method is based on a homogeneous absorbing Markov chain and provides the exact reliability for networks of width less than 5 and arbitrary length. Moreover, it produces a lower bound for the reliability polynomial for networks of width greater than or equal to 5. To investigate how sharp this lower bound is, we compare our method with other approximation methods and it proves to be the most accurate in terms of absolute as well as relative error. In the representation-theoretic study of finite dimensional associative algebras over an algebraically closed field, Brenner introduced certain partially ordered sets known as hammocks to encode factorizations of maps between indecomposable finitely generated modules. In the context of domestic string algebras, Schröer introduced a simpler version of hammocks in his doctoral thesis that are bounded discrete linear orders. In this paper, we characterize the class of order types(=order isomorphism classes) of hammock linear orders for domestic string algebras as the bounded discrete ones amongst the class L O fp of finitely presented linear orders –the smallest class of linear orders containing finite linear orders as well as ω , and that is closed under isomorphisms, order reversal, finite order sums and antilexicographic products. In fact, we provide a multi-step algorithm to compute the order type of any closed interval in the hammock, and prove the correctness of this algorithm. A major step of this algorithm is the construction of a variation, which we call the arch bridge quiver , of a finite combinatorial gadget called the bridge quiver introduced by Schröer. He utilised the graph-theoretic properties of the bridge quiver for the computation of some representation-theoretic numerical invariants of domestic string algebras. The vertices of the bridge quiver are (representatives of cyclic permutations of) bands and its arrows are certain band-free strings. There is a natural but ill-behaved partial binary operation, ∘, on a superset of the set of bridges consisting of weak bridges such that bridges are precisely the ∘-irreducibles. We equip an even larger yet finite set of weak arch bridges with another partial binary operation, ∘ H , to obtain a finite category. The binary operation ∘ H uses isomorphisms between hammocks and explicitly relies on the description of the domestic string algebra as a bound quiver algebra. Results after radical prostatectomy (RP) are generally judged by complete removal of the cancer, return of urinary control, and the ability to have intercourse. Given the complexity of the anatomy of the prostate and its relationship to the surrounding nerves, muscles, and fascia, RP is considered a challenging and technically demanding surgery. Background: Radical prostatectomy (RP) is the primary treatment of localized prostate cancer. Immediate urinary incontinence post-RP was still common and depressing without specific reason.Methods: A multicenter cohort of 154 consecutive patients from 2018 to 2020, who was diagnosed with localized prostate cancer underwent either modified mini-incision retropubic radical prostatectomy (Mmi-RRP) or laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) or robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Seventy-two patients with Denonvilliers' fascia (DF) spared were included in DFS (Denonvilliers' fascia sparing) group. Whereas eighty-two patients with DF completely or partially dissected were set as Group Control. The primary outcome was immediate continence (ImC). Continuous data and categorical data were analyzed with t-test and Chi-square test, respectively. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated with logistic regression.Results: Urinary continence of Group DFS was significantly better than that of Group Control at each time point within one year after operation. Incidence rate of continence in Group DFS and Group Control were 83.3% vs 13.4% (P < 0.01) for ImC, 90.3% vs 30.5% (P < 0.01) at 3 months, 91.7% vs 64.6% (P < 0.01) at 6 months, and 93.1% vs 80.5% (P = 0.02) at 1 year after operation, respectively. Positive surgical margin (PSM) showed no significant difference (20.8% vs 20.7%, P = 1.0). In multivariate analysis, DFS showed importance for ImC post RP (OR = 26.4, P < 0.01).Conclusions: Denonvilliers' fascia acted as the fulcrum and hammock for continence post RP. Preservation of DF contributed to better continence after RP without increase of PSM. The spider fauna of the Everglades National Park in southern Florida was surveyed over 2 widely separated time periods: 1966 to 1967 and 2008 to 2009. Samples were made in 4 of the typical Everglades habitats: sawgrass prairie, willowhead marsh, pineland, and tropical hardwood hammock, as well as several "disturbed" areas. A total of 201 spider species was identified. Twenty-three additional taxa were identified only to genus and included for general Everglades information. One species was documented as new and undescribed, and several others possibly may be new. The Everglades National Park is located at the northern border of the Neotropical ecozone and the southern border of the Nearctic ecozone. Forty-seven percent of the species were Nearctic, 37% Nearctic/Neotropical, 12% Cosmopolitan, and 3% Neotropical. The greatest number of species was collected in the hardwood hammock habitat. We tend to give less attention to the process of assembling things when analysing their social life or biography. There is a preconception of things being relatively stable, fixed and inert entities. In this paper, I suggest exploring the ordinary life of things, accounting for the interweaving of the human life with nonhuman materials. The mutual becomings of various entities, both humans and nonhumans, create assemblages that emerge from the interaction between their parts. Assembling things works to conceptualize how mutual entanglements create new possible worldings among a contemporary indigenous group in low land Latin-America. Ethnographically I trace the production process of hammocks and other types of items among the Warao of the Orinoco Delta, Venezuela, and how it entangles different 'others' like traders, tourists, missionaries and anthropologists and how these encounters affect the process of assembling things. Assembling things draws attention to how heterogenic component parts construe temporary but stable configurations that partake in people's worldmaking efforts. I use ethnography from the Warao and how their crafts, especially hammocks, become differently as they entangle various assemblages. I investigate three fields of assemblages in order to discern how the human/nonhuman entanglements unfold, namely household, market and museum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The low-lying Florida Everglades ecosystem maintains a delicate dynamic balance between freshwater and seawater. Hence, the Everglades is vulnerable to sharp salinity alterations induced by climate variations. The associated increase in surface seawater inundation and subsurface saltwater intrusion will reduce the availability of fresh groundwater. This would pose a risk to the Floridan surficial aquifer that provides potable water supply for millions of inhabitants in Florida. The increased salinity and decreased freshwater inputs will also alter coastal ecosystems by facilitating the establishment and encroachment of plants with higher salinity and flooding tolerance. In the Florida Everglades, coastal hardwood hammocks are particularly vulnerable to saltwater intrusion induced by sea level rise (SLR). This paper aims to project a possible change in the Coot Bay Hammock of Florida Everglades subject to gradually rising sea level. For this purpose, the simulation model MANTRA is enhanced to simulate the vegetation zonation pattern at a cross section of Coot Bay Hammock in this paper. MANTRA couples two USGS models MANHAM and SUTRA. Model simulation reveals SLR could cause a regime shift from the glycophytic hardwood hammocks to the halophytic mangroves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a systematic review of the literature on the effects of using hammocks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Hospitalization in the NICU exposes premature newborns to nociceptive stimuli that can affect their development. The use of positioning hammocks shows promise in mitigating the risks associated with NICU hospitalization, improving clinical outcomes and the well-being of premature newborns. Five clinical trials were found that investigated the impact of positioning hammocks on stabilizing vital signs and the sleep-wake states of premature newborns. The article discusses the influence of the use of the hammock network on the behavioral state, pain, and physiological variables of a premature newborn. The study was conducted in a hospital in Quixadá-CE and used the hammock network as an intervention, in addition to three assessment scales. The results showed that the use of the hammock network provided relaxation, deep sleep, and improved aspects such as saturation and heart rate of the premature baby. Work from home is one of the traditional forms of textile production that is still present in diverse regions of the world. The new local expressions connected to tourism have been able to position their products at a global scale. Also, in countries with cultural diversity there are regional markets where the population uses traditional clothing in their day-to-day life. This article offers a conceptual understanding of the novohispano proto-industry and the work activities at home. The case of an area of Southern Mexico is presented, the type of work that has been produced through textile activity, as well as its geographical specialization. The point of view of weavers, embroiderers, and armadoras in 13 municipalities of Yucatan is examined. Through interviews it was possible to recompile the details of their activity, the commercial connections, the means and ways in which this work is developed. This research is complemented by analyzing the longitudinal data of surveys about work from home, narrowing down on the textile economic sector. The findings suggest there are a set of factors connected to the proto-industry theory, specifically the relationship between the urban and rural, the extraterritorial market that strengthens the labor relationship between works and the commercial capital in the economic expansion of the state of Yucatan, Mexico.

Synthesis, characterization, coordination, bonding and electronic behavior of an ONS pincer ligand with divalent iron, cobalt, copper and zinc are described. The ligand is synthesized by condensation of dihydroxybenzaldehyde with thiosemicarbazide. The reaction of the ligand with metal ions in 1:2 (M:L) stoichiometric in identical conditions resulted in two octahedral pincer type complexes with iron and cobalt in which two ligands extend a perpendicular shape-retaining the ligand's linearity, and one trigonal bipyramidal pincer complex with zinc. For copper, the ligand preferred a bidentate coordination mode forming a square planar geometry. The structure of the copper complex can be viewed as a molecular hammock. Quantum mechanical studies at DFT level were undertaken to confirm the geometry, spectroscopic and electronic properties of all the complexes. The ability of the compounds to possess biological activity is tested against various pathogenic bacterial strains. The results show that the copper complex displays higher antimicrobial activities as compared to the ligand and other complexes. A remarkable change in the electronic spectrum of the ligand in the presence of cobalt ion in highly aqueous medium demonstrates its use as a metal sensor among a wide range of biological important metal ions. Objective: To review the effects of the hammock positioning on clinical parameters of preterm newborn infants (PTNB) admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Data sources: This was a systematic review performed by searching the Pubmed, Lilacs, SciELO and PEDro databases. Intervention studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish that evaluated the effects of hammock positioning on clinical parameters of PTNB admitted to the NICU were selected. Three search strategies were used: 1) hammock positioning OR patient positioning AND intensive care units AND infant, newborn; 2) hammock positioning OR patient positioning AND intensive care units; 3) hammock positioning OR patient positioning AND intensive care units, neonatal. There was no restriction on the year of publication of the articles. Methodological quality was assessed by the PEDro scale. Data synthesis: Among 597 articles, only six were included and 139 neonates with gestational ages between 26 and 37 weeks and an average gestational weight <2240g were analyzed. Four studies included patients without any associated pathology and most of them placed the PTNB supine in hammock positioning. The duration of the intervention ranged from 15 to 180 minutes and most applied it at just one moment. There was an improvement in heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR) and pain (3/4 studies), as well as gains in peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) (2/4 studies). Only one study reported worsening of SpO2 with the intervention. The methodological quality of the studies was classified as low. Conclusions: Although this review suggests improvement with hammock positioning in HR, RR and pain in PTNB, the low methodological quality makes the results inconsistent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of the study was to describe a novel technique for reinforcement of salvage laryngectomy closure using a bipedicled musculofascial submental flap. Methods: A retrospective cohort study design identified patients who underwent salvage laryngectomy reinforcement with a bipedicled submental hammock flap between January 2008 and December 2016 were compared to salvage laryngectomy patients treated with primary closure of the neopharynx during the same time period. Pharyngocutaneous fistula rates were compared between groups. Results: Pharyngocutaneous fistula rate in the submental hammock group (2/31, 6.5%) was significantly lower compared to the primary closure group (14/45, 31%, P <.05). Conclusion: The bipedicled musculofascial submental hammock flap is a viable method for reinforcement of salvage laryngectomy defects. It has a favorable pharyngocutaneous fistula rate compared to primary closure alone and has unique advantages over conventional methods of reinforcement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To present a technical tip to be incorporated in the first stage of a 2-stage graft repair of proximal hypospadias associated with curvature, aiming at widening the graft bed and enhancing mobility of the lateral portions of the graft for subsequent urethroplasty.Methods: After penile straightening, the dorsal dartos layer, carefully preserved attached to the dorsal penile skin used for penile coverage, is anchored to the lateral edges of the denuded corpora cavernosa with 3 to 4 interrupted 6-0 resorbable stiches on each side. The dartos creates a sort of hammock in-between the corpora, on which the central portion of the graft is quilted as in standard staged graft repair, and the skin margins laterally. Therefore, it widens the graft bed by 3-4 mm on each side. The lateral portions of the graft, laying on dartos, also remain supple for subsequent tabularization.Results: Between 2017 and 2019, the technique was used in 16 cases (range 10-19 months). None of these patients required re-grafting because of severe longitudinal graft shrinkage.Conclusion: The described modification seems a simple tip to be incorporate in staged graft urethroplasty. Putative advantages include that a wider graft can compensate for some graft shrinkage occurring in-between stages; during the second stage, it can facilitate dissection and improve mobility of the lateral graft portions for tubularization, and make retrieval of a dartos flap for urethroplasty coverage easier. Feather-decorated hammocks from the Amazon have been documented in travel reports and incorporated into museum collections from the nineteenth up to the early twentieth century. Here we present an analysis of five of these hammocks, housed in European museums. Through an object-centered approach, combining data obtained by direct observation of museum objects and associated documentation, historic travel reports and ethnographic literature, new information was obtained on the hammocks, such as possible areas of origin and indigenous producer groups. Results show that the production of these hammocks occurred in an area larger than traditionally believed, and that indigenous peoples at times decorated these hammocks in such a way as to express elements of their culture, imprinting ethnic markers onto artifacts that were many times considered as non-indigenous due to their production in transcultural contexts. Background: This study revisits the previously described technique of inverted-T skin-reducing mastectomy and dermal-muscle pocket as a single-stage breast reconstruction using anatomical implants in large and ptotic breasts. Refinements have been added to enhance the quality of implant coverage, improve aesthetic outcome, and augment the implant volume than previously described in the literature. Subjects and methods: The study was performed in three centers in the UK, Egypt, and Libya. It included patients with large ptotic breasts with a breast cup size of D or larger. The areola-to-inframammary fold distance is of 8 cm or more, and a nipple-sternal notch distance is 25 cm or more. Modification of the dermal-muscle flap was made through dividing the medial and lateral ends of the de-epithelialized flap at a distance of one inch to create wings that could be sutured to the free edge of pectoralis major muscle to act as a hammock. Results: It included 42 patients, and the mean age of the patients was 44.4 years (range 28–62). The mean body mass index was 34.2 (range 24–42). The reconstruction was unilateral in 32 (76.2%) patients and bilateral in ten (23.8%) patients. The average implant volume was 498.5 CC (range 375–650). Seventeen (40.5%) patients had a symmetrizing breast reduction. The average follow-up time was 52 weeks. Major complications were noticed in four (7.7%) breasts: Three breasts had major skin necrosis and one breast had hematoma that necessitated surgical evacuation. There were no reported cases of implant extrusion. Minor complications were recorded in six (11.5%) breasts; two had wound infection, and three had minor skin necrosis. Conclusion: The hammock technique of dermal-muscle flap is safe and versatile in large and ptotic breasts. It also creates a natural-looking breast with bigger implants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on subjective and objective sleepiness of a stay above a large struck singing bowl compared to a relaxation period in a silent singing bowl. Methods: Fifty-eight healthy subjects were recruited for the study, 48 participated on two days, one week apart, during the same timeslot. The Karolinska sleepiness scale was used to evaluate current subjective sleepiness, and the relative pupillary unrest index to assess objective sleepiness. In this randomized cross-over study, the intervention consisted of a 20-minute stay in a hammock while the singing bowl, positioned beneath, was struck seven times. The controlled comparator was a 20-minute stay in the same hammock above the singing bowl, but without being struck. After these two interventions subjective and objective sleepiness were re-evaluated. Results: The mean relative pupillary unrest index values after relaxation in the struck and silent singing bowl groups were 0.74 and respectively 0.71 (p = 0.460). The median Karolinska sleepiness scale value after relaxation with the struck singing bowl was 3 compared with 4 (p = 0.041) for the silent singing bowl. Discussion: This study evaluated the influence of a struck singing bowl on sleepiness during daytime. Subjective sleepiness was significantly lower after relaxation above a struck singing bowl. After gender stratification, the difference was still significant in women. Objective sleepiness was not different in both groups. Finally, we can only speculate if women may be more susceptible to subjective improvements in case of sleepiness and show another perception of relaxation in a struck singing bowl compared to men.
