Pain, detected by nociceptors, is an integral part of injury, yet whether and how it can impact tissue physiology and recovery remain understudied. Here, we applied chemogenetics in mice to locally activate dermal TRPV1 innervations in naive skin and found that it triggered new regenerative cycling by dormant hair follicles (HFs). This was preceded by rapid apoptosis of dermal macrophages, mediated by the neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). TRPV1 activation also triggered a macrophage-dependent induction of osteopontin (Spp1)-expressing dermal fibroblasts. The neuropeptide CGRP and the extracellular matrix protein Spp1 were required for the nociceptor-triggered hair growth. Finally, we showed that epidermal abrasion injury induced Spp1-expressing dermal fibroblasts and hair growth via a TRPV1 neuron and CGRP-dependent mechanism. Collectively, these data demonstrated a role for TRPV1 nociceptors in orchestrating a macrophage and fibroblast-supported mechanism to promote hair growth and enabling the efficient restoration of this mechano- and thermo-protective barrier after wounding.

Introduction: Hair transplantation surgery requires the efficient completion of hair follicles and thus appropriate hair implantation needles. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of self-made hair implantation needles using injection needles and evaluate the speed of different hair implantation methods. Methods: Four patients were randomly assigned to four groups. A gem knife pre-punching planting method was used for the patient in Group A, while Group B received immediate implantation after punching with ordinary injection needles, Group C was treated with synchronized punching and planting using hair implanters, and Group D was treated with a self-made hair implantation needle. The speed of the different implantation methods for single and double hair follicles and the differences between the planting of single and double hair follicles were assessed. Results: Group D was found to have the fastest hair planting speed for both single and double hair follicles, followed by Groups C and A, with the slowest speed observed in Group B. Groups A and B were associated with significantly lower speeds of double hair planting than single hair planting, There was no significant difference between Groups C and D. Conclusions: The self-made hair implantation needle is a novel and efficient tool for synchronized punching and planting. It has a faster planting speed and does not require assistance. ABSTRACT Background Methods Results Conclusion The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of quercetin loaded on solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) in protecting human hair from ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B) light in vitro.In this study, solvent‐emulsified diffusion method was used to fabricate nanoparticle formulations and then particle size, loading, and drug release tests were performed from different formulations. Variables include oily part proportion, liquid to solid oil part ratio, and surfactant to lipid ratio. The optimal formulation was prepared by examining the eight formulations and optimizing them. Six groups of hair with different treatments were exposed to UV light for 600 h and the changes were investigated by examining four factors: RMS (root mean square average, the microscopic profile peaks and valleys), peak to valley roughness, the amount of chemical changes by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the amount of protein loss.The selected formulation had a suitable particle size, loading percent, and release rate for penetration to hair. Quercetin‐loaded SLN controlled RMS factor, peak to valley roughness, and reduced chemical changes and protein loss compared to other treatments.The optimize formulation showed positive effects in protecting the hair strands from UV‐B radiation. Although the technologies for auricular reconstruction in microtia have improved, issues such as low hairlines or excessive hair growth can still pose aesthetic problems for the reconstructed ear. Laser depilation has been reported as a solution for hair problems. However, few studies have discussed the appropriate region for hair removal. A retrospective analysis was performed on 276 patients with unilateral microtia who underwent the Nagata two-stage ear reconstruction. The gender ratio of male to female was 2.5 (198 males/78 females). Intense pulsed light depilation was used to remove hair. To determine the proper hair removal area, we measured the extent of hair removal. Before the first stage, the average vertical distance between the upper point (after localization) and hairline was 3.42 ± 4.75 mm (-10–20 mm). After the first stage, the average vertical distance between the upper point of the reconstructed ear and the hairline was 1.27 ± 2.41 mm (-10–15 mm). By using chi-square test to assess differences in hair removal success rates among various regions, we aimed to identify the suitable depilation region. Before the first stage, a depilation vertical distance ≥ 10 mm led to a 92.1% success rate. After the first stage surgery, among the patients needing additional hair removal, a vertical depilation distance ≥ 4 mm resulted in an 81.3% success rate. Based on our observation, we suggested that a depilation region of ≥ 10 mm (before the first surgery) or ≥ 4 mm (after the first surgery) would be the ideal range for laser hair removal. Sustainable structures are an important area of research, particularly for anticipated extended human presence on the Moon or Mars. Persistent human presence on the Moon will require building materials that are already present at the site to construct bases. The high cost associated with reinforcing metal (rebar) in mission payloads necessitates the exploration of alternative reinforcement methods for sustained lunar bases. Human hair is strong in tensile strength and will become available in any long-term mission. By using otherwise wasted hair instead of heavy metal, mission payloads and costs could be lowered. Concrete workability, compressive strength, and porosity were measured for a series of different cement compositions. These compositions consisted of combinations of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), lunar regolith, deionized (DI) water and human hair. Text‐based hair design (TBHD) represents an innovative approach that utilizes text instructions for crafting hairstyle and colour, renowned for its flexibility and scalability. However, enhancing TBHD algorithms to improve generation quality and editing accuracy remains a current research difficulty. One important reason is that existing models fall short in alignment and fusion designs. Therefore, we propose a new layered multimodal fusion network called ETBHD‐HMF, which decouples the input image and hair text information into layered hair colour and hairstyle representations. Within this network, the channel enhancement separation (CES) module is proposed to enhance important signals and suppress noise for text representation obtained from CLIP, thus improving generation quality. Based on this, we develop the weighted mapping fusion (WMF) sub‐networks for hair colour and hairstyle. This sub‐network applies the mapper operations to input image and text representations, acquiring joint information. The WMF then selectively merges image representation and joint information from various style layers using weighted operations, ultimately achieving fine‐grained hairstyle designs. Additionally, to enhance editing accuracy and quality, we design a modality alignment loss to refine and optimize the information transmission and integration of the network. The experimental results of applying the network to the CelebA‐HQ dataset demonstrate that our proposed model exhibits superior overall performance in terms of generation quality, visual realism, and editing accuracy. Introduction Auditory disabilities like tinnitus and hearing loss caused by exposure to blast overpressures are prevalent among military service members and veterans. The high-pressure fluctuations of blast waves induce hearing loss by injuring the tympanic membrane, ossicular chain, or sensory hair cells in the cochlea. The basilar membrane (BM) and organ of Corti (OC) behavior inside the cochlea during blast remain understudied. A computational finite element (FE) model of the full human ear was used by Bradshaw et al. (2023) to predict the motion of middle and inner ear tissues during blast exposure using a 3-chambered cochlea with Reissner's membrane and the BM. The inclusion of the OC in a blast transmission model would improve the model's anatomy and provide valuable insight into the inner ear response to blast exposure. Materials and Methods This study developed a microscale FE model of the OC, including the OC sensory hair cells, membranes, and structural cells, connected to a macroscale model of the ear to form a comprehensive multiscale model of the human peripheral auditory system. There are 5 rows of hair cells in the model, each row containing 3 outer hair cells (OHCs) and the corresponding Deiters' cells and stereociliary hair bundles. BM displacement 16.75 mm from the base induced by a 31 kPa blast overpressure waveform was derived from the macroscale human ear model reported by Bradshaw et al. (2023) and applied as input to the center of the BM in the OC. The simulation was run for 2 ms as a structural analysis in ANSYS Mechanical. Results The FE model results reported the displacement and principal strain of the OHCs, reticular lamina, and stereociliary hair bundles during blast transmission. The movement of the BM caused the rest of the OC to deform significantly. The reticular lamina displacement and strain amplitudes were highest where it connected to the OHCs, indicating that injury to this part of the OC may be likely due to blast exposure. Conclusions This microscale model is the first FE model of the OC to be connected to a macroscale model of the ear, forming a full multiscale ear model, and used to predict the OC's behavior under blast. Future work with this model will incorporate cochlear endolymphatic fluid, increase the number of OHC rows to 19 in total, and use the results of the model to reliably predict the sensorineural hearing loss resulting from blast exposure. Katingan River has been contaminated by mercury from ASGM activities since the early 2000s. This study aims to assess the risk of mercury exposure from Katingan fish consumption and analyze relationships between exposure variables. We proposed two risk assessment scenarios based on mercury analysis of 74 fish samples and fish consumption questionnaire. The risk assessment result revealed that estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of Scenario 2 were generally 3–4 times higher than Scenario 1. The statistical test results showed significant differences (p < 0.05) in EDI values between scenarios, indicating that variations in fish consumption influenced the mercury intake. Three different health reference-based values (HRVs) were applied in estimating the hazard quotient (HQ) and it influenced the HQ results (p < 0.05), for both scenarios. The relationship analysis between variables presented a strong non-linear correlation between EDI and hair mercury level for both scenarios, but a weak relationship between age and hair mercury level. Importance: Patients undergoing cancer treatment experience a multitude of skin, hair, and nail adverse events, prompting them to use non-evidence-based and often restrictive over-the-counter (OTC) recommendations to alleviate their symptoms. Comprehensively assessing evidence-based OTC modalities is crucial to enable cancer patients to comfortably resume their lives post-treatment and integrate clinically sound practices into their self-care routines. Objective: Perform a systematic review and assessment of evidence-based OTC skin, hair, and nail care recommendations for adult patients undergoing cancer treatment. Evidence review: PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Medline databases were searched in March 2023 to identify English articles addressing OTC skin, hair, and nail care recommendations for adult patients before, during, and after cancer chemotherapy or radiation therapy (RT). Quality was assessed with Oxford Centre for Evidence Based Medicine criteria. Findings: 2192 unique articles were screened, of which 77 met inclusion criteria consisting of 54 randomized controlled trials (RCT), 8 non-randomized controlled cohorts, 1 non-randomized controlled clinical trial, 3 controlled prospective cohorts, 4 prospective cohorts, 2 controlled clinical trials, 1 prospective comparative study, 2 case reports, and 2 case series discussing 9322 patients. An additional article outside of our database search was included for a total of 78 articles. OTC skin care treatments with the best quality of evidence included moisturizing creams. Our review revealed a paucity of evidence-based hair and nail care practices. Conclusions and relevance: This systematic review serves to highlight the efficacy of diverse OTC skin, hair, and nail care recommendations for adult cancer patients while encouraging further clinical trials to establish evidence-based management guidelines. Relatively more-apparent body parts are often used to name relatively less-apparent body parts. To explore this etymological phenomenon, this report assesses anatomical terminology derived from some of the most apparent structures of the human body—hairs. Hair-related anatomical terminology involves varied etymons, roots, and derivatives: calvus "bald," cilia "eyelashes," glaber "hairless," pilus "hair," pubes (historically referring to the developing beard), pudendum "modesty" (referring to hair growth that covers genitalia), tempus "time" (referring to the location where hair commonly grays, thus showing a person's age), and tragus "goat" (referring to the tuft of hair that resembles the beard of a goat). Also including lanugo, vibrissae, hirci, flocculus, and cauda equina, a systematic review of Terminologia Anatomica and Terminologia Neuroanatomica revealed 285 unique non-duplicate hair-related terms. Several anatomical terms allude to particular age groups or sexes, but are used indiscriminately (e.g., tragus alludes to the older male ear, though may describe the fetal female ear). Likewise, human-centric anatomical terminology influences non-human anatomical terminology— a turtle has a "temporal bone" only because some humans develop gray hair on the sides of their heads as they age. Accordingly, etymological recursion is common: The human ear has a tragus, named after the goat, and the goat ear has a tragus, named after the human tragus, that was named after the goat. The use of Latin as the foundation of anatomical and medical terminology may appear seriously supercilious; however, it is often simply super silly. Background: Data on dermatological manifestations of Costello syndrome (CS) remain heterogeneous and lack in validated description. Objectives: To describe the dermatological manifestations of CS; compare them with the literature findings; assess those discriminating CS from other RASopathies, including cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome (CFCS) and the main types of Noonan syndrome (NS); and test for dermatological phenotype–genotype correlations. Methods: We performed a 10‐year, large, prospective, multicentric, collaborative dermatological and genetic study. Results: Thirty‐one patients were enrolled. Hair abnormalities were ubiquitous, including wavy or curly hair and excessive eyebrows, respectively in 68% and 56%. Acral excessive skin (AES), papillomas and keratotic papules (PKP), acanthosis nigricans (AN), palmoplantar hyperkeratosis (PPHK) and 'cobblestone' papillomatous papules of the upper lip (CPPUL), were noted respectively in 84%, 61%, 65%, 55% and 32%. Excessive eyebrows, PKP, AN, CCPUL and AES best differentiated CS from CFCS and NS. Multiple melanocytic naevi (>50) may constitute a new marker of attenuated CS associated with intragenic duplication in HRAS. Oral acitretin may be highly beneficial for therapeutic management of PPHK. No significant dermatological phenotype–genotype correlation was determined between patients with and without HRAS c.34G>A (p.G12S). Conclusions and Relevance: This validated phenotypic characterization of a large number of patients with CS will allow future researchers to make a positive diagnosis, and to differentiate CS from CFCS and NS. Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent hair loss disorder with psychological repercussions. Traditional treatments have limitations, leading to the exploration of regenerative therapies such as exosomes derived from adipose tissue stem cells (ASC‐Exosomes). Methods: First, using human hair follicle (HF) dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) treated with ASC‐Exosomes, ALP, VCAN, β‐catenin, and LEF‐1 levels with RT‐PCR and p‐GSK3β, GSK3β, β‐catenin, ALP, and β‐actin levels with western blot analysis were assessed. Hair shaft elongation test and assay for ALP, Ki‐67, and β‐catenin were done using human HF organ culture. Patients with AGA had ASC‐Exosomes treatment and were evaluated for hair counts, photographic assessments, subjective satisfaction, and safety profiles. Results: ASC‐Exosomes impact hDPCs, increasing proliferation and the upregulation of hair growth‐related genes, including ALP, VCAN, β‐catenin, and LEF‐1. The Wnt/β‐catenin pathway was activated, indicating their role in promoting hair growth. ASC‐Exosomes also promoted hair shaft elongation and ALP activity, suggesting a potential for hair regeneration. Thirty participants with AGA enrolled and treated over 24 weeks. The subjects experienced a significant increase in total hair density, improved global photographic assessments, and reported higher subjective satisfaction without severe adverse reactions. Conclusion: This research contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of exosomes in hair loss treatment, offering a safe and effective alternative for individuals with AGA. At the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, South Korean archer An San received national attention for her short hair, when anti-feminists accused An of being a feminist. The anti-feminists' online assaults made national headlines and evoked a strong feminist countermovement. In this paper, we ground this incident in the context of Korean nationalism and its relation to sport, and South Korean feminist movements. Using social media and news sources as our data, we analyze the meanings of women athletes' hair length and styles, revealed in the case of An San. We explore meanings of hair in Korean women's elite sport, and within the context of the tal-corset feminist movement. We argue that the An incident sheds light on the complex interplay between nationalism, feminist movements, and physical cultures of hair, and see the An incident as one that drew increasing public attention and support for the feminist movement in South Korea. This qualitative study investigated the relationship between beauty standards and identity in the United States from the perspective of 20 self-identified millennial Black women. During semi-structured virtual interviews, participants defined Black, American, and millennial beauty standards distinctly. American beauty was associated with Eurocentrism and mainstream media representation. Interpretations of a millennial beauty standard were aligned with perceptions of the generation as tolerant and politically conscious. Black American beauty standards embraced the range of hair textures and skin tones present in the African diaspora. While participants were cognizant of the different beauty ideals present, their interaction with beauty standards was ambivalent. Interviewees found beauty knowledge accessible through social media. However, they remain confined to a restrictive beauty standard due to workplace expectations around professionalism. Participants negotiated where and when to express their intracultural beauty ideals but participated in the beauty industry through processes of learning how to care for their hair in its natural state. Even though they have autonomy and flexibility in expressing their cultural styles, personal and professional repercussions are still plausible. Based on qualitative data from a large study exploring Muslim experiences in the workplace, this chapter explains how Muslim dress standards inform identity and are influenced by US cultural ideals about self-presentation and perceived anti-Muslim hostility. Theoretical sampling was used to find 25 men and 59 women, 32 of whom are veiled. These individuals worked at major corporations as numerical minorities or held professions where they encountered non-Muslims regularly. Informed by theories of orientalism and social identity, findings examine hegemonic representations of organizational power and describe how men could employ masculine practices to navigate anti-Muslim discourse and foster a sense of belonging at work. Within immigrant-centered workplaces, women face cultural backlash for appropriating Western styles deemed immodest. While working outside their community, women who wore hijabs emphasized their femininity through softer colors, makeup, or "unpinning" their veil to offset the visceral reaction to their hijab. Thus, adapting to workplace dress expectations is structured by intersections of gender, religion, and workplace location. This chapter illustrates how Muslim dress strategies indirectly reflect how Western standards of dress, behavior, and self-expression determine qualifications and approachability within workplace structures, marginalizing Muslims and reproducing racial and gender hierarchies. Background Methods Results Conclusion Achieving successful outcomes in hair transplant surgery involves various critical factors, including donor area harvesting, graft survival, and minimizing post‐operative complications. This study investigates the differences in grafts obtained using the rotary and oscillatory punch methods during follicular unit extraction (FUE) surgery.The study involved 15 patients undergoing FUE. Four 4 × 6 cm2 areas in two rows were selected for each patient, with each row utilizing a different punch method (rotary or oscillatory). The grafts were extracted and examined under a microscope, classified into single, double single, double, and triple categories. The total yield rate and average number of hairs per graft were measured and compared.The average number of hair follicles per graft was 2.029 for the rotary method and 2.084 for the oscillatory method, indicating no statistically significant difference. However, the total yield rate was 88.3% for the rotary group and 90.5% for the oscillatory group, with the difference being statistically significant. In selected cases with soft scalps or deeper punch requirements, the oscillatory method showed significantly better results, with an average of 2.078 hairs per graft compared to 1.836 for the rotary method. The total yield rate in these cases was 91% for oscillatory and 86% for rotary.While the overall differences between rotary and oscillatory punches are minimal, the oscillatory punch is significantly more effective in cases with soft scalps or deeper punch requirements. Human hair cortisol concentration (HCC) has previously been found to be highly stable for a 1‐year interval (r = 0.73) in terms of a product–moment correlation. The present study aimed to replicate this finding and compare HCC stability regarding 1‐year and 2‐year test–retest intervals. Female university students (N = 39) provided hair strands twice (t1 and t2) at intervals of 1 (n = 21) or 2 years (n = 18). Multiple regression analysis predicting HCC at t2 revealed a significant interaction term (HCC at t1 × time interval condition). It was determined that HCCs were substantially related for the 1‐year interval but unrelated for the 2‐year interval. The findings were not attributable to potential influences, such as hair treatment. The product–moment correlation showed nearly identical consistency with previous research regarding the 1‐year test–retest interval. There was no significant product–moment correlation for the 2‐year interval. Overall, these findings indicate that within a temporal framework of 1 year, HCCs may be stable predictors in correlational studies where the focus is on the rank orders of measured values. Tessier number 10 cleft is one of the rarest facial clefts. Surgical treatment of this type of cleft is challenging due to the complexity of periorbital and temporal soft tissue deformities. A 23-year-old male patient presented with typical facial deformities of Tessier number 10 cleft. The surgical procedure involved using a free anterolateral thigh flap to reconstruct the eye socket, while the superficial temporal artery pedicle scalp flap was used to reconstruct the eyebrow deformity. The patient had no complications and 16 months after surgery, the patient had good aesthetic results. A hair-bearing scalp flap with a pedicle of the frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery combined with an anterolateral thigh-free flap can effectively resolve most soft tissue deformities of Tessier number 10 cleft and reconstruct the orbital socket in a single surgery. Background: Female‐pattern hair loss (FPHL) is characterized by decreased scalp hair density, thinning of hair shafts, and progressive miniaturization of hair follicles. Objective: To compare the safety and efficacy of spironolactone versus bicalutamide in female pattern hair loss [FPHL]. Methods: The study design was retrospective, and all eligible females aged between 18 years and 50 years with FPHL were included. We identified 120 patients from our database who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and patients were then categorized into two groups, Group A comprising patients who were taking 100 mg of spironolactone once daily and Group B comprising patients who were taking 50 mg of bicalutamide once daily along with topical minoxidil 2% in both groups. Patient were analysed at approximately at 24 weeks from the commencement of the treatment. Results: Mean reduction in hair loss severity score on Sinclair scale was 19.51% in spironolactone group compared to 28.20% in bicalutamide group at 24 weeks, which was statistically significant. On global photographic assessment, marked improvement was seen in bicalutamide group compared to spironolactone group (p = 0.139). Conclusions: Our study, though limited by its retrospective design and small sample size, showed that bicalutamide has greater efficacy and better safety profile in comparison to spironolactone in the treatment of FPHL. Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) reflects the long‐term activity of the hypothalamus‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis in response to stress. Brain‐derived neurotrophic factor DNA methylation (BDNF DNAM) may affect HCC, and sex and Val66Met may contribute to this association. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the associations between HCC and Brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) DNAM, and the moderating effects of Val66Met and sex. We recruited 191 healthy young participants (96 women, mean age 23.0 ± 2.6 years) and collected body samples to evaluate HCC, and to determine BDNF DNAM and Val66Met genotypes. We analyzed the effects of BDNF DNAM, sex, and Val66Met on HCC. We also evaluated the associations between BDNF DNAM and HCC in groups separated by sex and genotypes. We found a marked association of BDNF DNAM with HCC across men and women. After dividing the data by sex, a positive correlation of HCC with BDNF DNAM was found only in women. There was no substantial moderation effect of Val66Met genotypes on the association between BDNF DNAM and HCC. Therefore, BDNF DNAM was found to have positive association with HCC only in healthy young women, indicating that sex moderates the association of BDNF DNAM with long‐term HPA axis activity. Purpose: Maternal cortisol levels in pregnancy may support the growth of or adversely affect fetal organs, including the brain. While moderate cortisol levels are essential for fetal development, excessive or prolonged elevations may have negative health consequences for both the mother and the offspring. Little is known about predictors of altered hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis activity during pregnancy. This study examined maternal hair cortisol concentration (HCC) in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy in relation to severe psychopathology. Methods: Hair samples were collected from 69 women, 32 with a lifetime diagnosis of severe mental disorders (bipolar I or II disorder, moderate or severe depressive disorder, schizophrenic spectrum disorder), and 37 non-clinical controls. Hair samples were collected during the 3rd trimester, and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was used for cortisol assessment. Psychiatric diagnosis and current level of symptomatic functioning were assessed using the structured clinical interview from the DSM-5 and the global assessment of functioning scale. Results: Women with a lifetime diagnosis of severe mental illness had significantly elevated HCC compared to controls. Poorer current symptomatic functioning was also significantly associated with elevated HCC in pregnancy. Mylodon darwinii is an extinct terrestrial species of sloth with a wide fossil record in South America, the record of the skin and hairs found from "La Cueva del Milodón", Chile. More than a century after the first studies on its hair, we aimed to redescribe the morphological characteristics of the hairs of M. darwinii by applying modern protocols of trichology and microscopy. Hair patterns were also compared with those of two other extinct species of sloths available in the literature. Hairs from mummified specimen housed in Museo de La Plata (Argentina) were analyzed through light and scanning electron microscopy to identify their cuticular and medullary patterns. Guard hairs lack medulla and have a wavy cuticle with irregular scale orientation, while underhairs have an amorphous cuticle pattern and no medulla. Hence, the former ones help in the diagnosis of the hair morphology of the species, while the latter ones do not. Differences found in the final product of each microscopy technique are discussed and should be considered in future research. The outcomes presented herein are a step further toward the understanding of evolutionary processes within Xenarthra, providing important data for such a poorly studied group that has only been recorded in Central and South America. AbstractWhen Canadian broadcaster, Lisa LaFlamme, announced in August 2022 that CTV National News did not renew her contract, some observers suggested that the corporation’s decision resulted from LaFlamme’s choice to “let her hair go gray” during the pandemic. An international public outcry ensued on Twitter. Our study involved an examination of these tweets (n = 440). Analyses revealed that approximately 80 percent of tweets indicated opposition to LaFlamme’s dismissal, while only 2 percent indicated support and 18 percent indicated a neutral position. Among tweets expressing opposition, the most common justification, found in 79 percent of these tweets, centered on assessments of the employer’s decision as poor. The frequency of all other justifications for opposition was considerably lower, with only 26 percent of these tweets mentioning ageism, 22 percent mentioning sexism, and 20 percent mentioning a general sense of unfairness to LaFlamme. These findings suggest the salience of capitalist logics in shaping how the public frames gendered ageism in the workplace. Our analyses also suggest a view of responses to this inequality as personal bodywork choices. Children now are facing an increasing risk of early life stress (ELS), which leads to detrimental psychosocial outcomes. Behavior studies suggested that positive parental interactions might moderate the negative impact of ELS, but the related biological alteration remains unclear. This study aims to investigate whether positive parent–child interactions moderate the association between maltreatment (as a severe form of ELS) and hair cortisol concentration (HCC), as well as between HCC and psychosocial outcomes in young children. Participants were 6-year-old Chinese children (N = 257, Mage = 6.2, 121 were male) selected by stratified cluster random sampling from a Shanghai population representative cohort. Proximal 3 cm hair strands were analyzed using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry for HCC. Children's psychosocial outcome was evaluated using the parental report Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Parents also reported the frequency of positive parent–child interactions using the Chinese Parent–Child Interaction Scale (CPCIS) as well as the history of maltreatment. Multi-level logistic regression models adjusting for individual, kindergarten, and district confounders were used to evaluate the associations between maltreatment, HCC, and psychosocial outcomes. Interactions terms tested whether more frequent positive parent–child interactions moderates the association between maltreatment and HCC, as well as between HCC and psychosocial outcomes. Maltreated children exhibited higher levels of HCC (B = 1.20, 95% CI: 0.38,2.02; p = 0.004), and children with higher HCC exhibited poorer psychosocial outcomes (B = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.18,0.51; p < 0.001). Positive parent–child interactions did not have a moderating effect on the association between maltreatment and HCC, but they demonstrated a moderating effect on the association between increased HCC and psychosocial outcomes (interaction term: B = −0.42, 95% CI: −0.75,−0.10; p = 0.01). These findings provide evidence that positive parental interaction may serve as a moderator between chronic cortisol exposure and psychosocial problems. Background: Chemical hair relaxers are widely utilized by black women, yet little research exists on the allergens present in these products. Objective: This study aims to investigate allergen prevalence in the most popular chemical hair relaxers. Methods: We analysed 41 products from five major retailers, identifying allergens through ingredient lists and comparing them to the 2020 American Contact Dermatitis Group Core allergen series. Results: The most common contact allergens in chemical relaxers include propylene glycol, cetyl steryl alcohol, fragrance, D/L‐a‐tocopherol, tea tree oil and cocamidopropyl betaine. Conclusion: Understanding allergen exposure in products used by individuals with textured hair is needed for managing contact dermatitis in diverse populations. Introduction: Diagnosis of persistent erythematous, scaly patches, or plaques can be complex since psoriasis (Ps), eczematous dermatitis (ED), and mycosis fungoides (MF) can be considered. Dermoscopy, which is a noninvasive diagnostic tool, is commonly used to examine blood vessels, scales, and background color; however, research on hair shaft evaluation in inflammatory dermatoses remains scarce. The aim of the study was dermoscopic evaluation of hair shafts in skin lesions localized on the non-scalp skin areas in patients diagnosed with MF, Ps, and ED. Methods: This was a retrospective evaluation of 55 patients diagnosed with MF, Ps, and ED. Photographic and dermoscopic documentation of these patients and detailed medical history were evaluated. Results: A total of 21 patients with MF, 21 patients with Ps, and 13 patients with ED were evaluated. The examination revealed the presence of various abnormalities of hair shafts (e.g., numerous pili torti, single pili torti, 8-shaped hairs, pigtail hairs, broken hairs, hair shafts rapidly tapered over long sections, hair shafts irregular in thickness, angulated hairs, branched hairs, the presence of trichorrhexis nodosa, and monilethrix-like hairs), yellow dots, and black dots. The presence of pili torti was found in 80% of patients with MF, compared with 16% of patients with Ps and 8% of patients with ED (p < 0.005), with multiple pili torti found only in MF patients (67%) (p < 0.005). Statistically significant differences also applied to hair shafts rapidly tapering over long sections and 8-shaped hairs, which occurred only in MF patients (p < 0.005 and p = 0.035, respectively). Conclusions: The presence of hair shaft abnormalities such as numerous pili torti, 8-shaped hairs, and hair shafts rapidly tapering over long sections is an important criterion that should be considered in the dermoscopic differentiation of the patchy/plaque mycosis fungoides and inflammatory dermatoses, such as psoriasis and eczematous dermatitis localized on the non-scalp skin areas. Since the launch of the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) in 2006, Health Canada has initiated screening-level risk assessments (RAs) of approximately 4300 priority substances under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act , 1999 (CEPA). With the availability of nationally representative human biomonitoring (HBM) data, over 300 of these substances were assessed using HBM-based RA approaches. Qualitative and quantitative HBM-based RA approaches for the regulatory risk assessment of the general population of Canada were developed to increase the efficiency of screening the potential health risk of CMP priority substances. To support HBM-based RAs, several biomonitoring equivalents (BE) were derived to interpret HBM data. For some CMP substances, Health Canada conducted cumulative risk assessments of chemical mixtures using HBM data as measures of exposure. In 2023, CEPA was amended to include the assessment of populations who may be disproportionately impacted (vulnerable populations) and the cumulative effects of multiple chemicals. Going forward, Health Canada is exploring modern approaches in HBM-based RAs, including biomarkers of effect and non-traditional biomarkers (e.g., hair, nails) to address CEPA amendments. This paper investigates the effect of fiber surface treatment on various properties of hair fiber reinforced composites. Human hair fiber reinforced modified epoxidized soybean oil based composites were prepared by compression molding technique. Acid treatment of hair fibers was carried out by using three different concentrations of HCl solution (0.25%, 0.75%, and 1%, respectively) in order to achieve improvement in adhesion between the fiber and the matrix. Epoxidized soybean oil was modified using methacrylic acid and methacrylic anhydride to form methacrylic anhydride modified epoxidized soybean oil. Rosin acid derivative (a rigid comonomer) was prepared and used as a crosslinker. Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy was carried out to study the interaction among the components of the composites. Various properties, namely, mechanical, thermal, flame resistance, and chemical resistance were checked. Scanning electron microscopy of the fractured surface of the composites was carried out to examine the morphologies. Hair fibers treated with 0.75% of HCl showed maximum improvement in all the properties and could be employed as reinforcement in various composites to be used for structural applications. Modern society's keen regard for aesthetics made hair products an integral part of a multi‐billion‐dollar cosmetic industry. Hair care products (e.g., shampoos and conditioners) and chemical treatments (e.g., bleaching and permanent waving) result in various effects on the morphological attributes of hair. Generally, water adsorbed on the hair surface is known to significantly dictate the hair's mechanical characteristics (smoothness and friction), and hair's macroscopic wettability has been commonly used to indicate its surface properties. However, an approach to selectively characterize the hydration water in the hair surface is required to accurately understand the intermolecular events between the hair and its vicinal water. In this paper, we successfully obtained the infrared (IR) absorption spectra of the hydration water of human hair. We employed the multivariate curve resolution‐alternating least square (MCR‐ALS) method to separate the hydration and bulk water spectra from the whole spectra. Comparing the IR spectra of the hydration water of chemically untreated and bleached hair samples, we conclude that water molecules form strong hydrogen bonds with the bleached hair surface due to the destruction of the hair's hydrophobic outer layer and the consequent formation of hydrophilic residues. Background: The structure and physiology of skin and hair in people of African ancestry are different from other ethnic categories and studies from other continents cannot necessarily be extrapolated to Sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) due to the differences in genetics, lifestyle, climate, cultures, and hair and skin care practices. The aim of this report is to highlight the recent advances in local skin and hair research in SSA from a grant program. Methods: African Hair and Skin Research Grants from an industrial sponsor were awarded between 2013 and 2022 on five main topics: acne, hair and scalp, keloid scars, atopic dermatitis, and air pollution. A literature search in Scopus identified publications on these topics in African or black skin in SSA and worldwide to provide insight into the impact of the program. Results: The number of publications from around the world on the skin and hair of people of African ancestry has increased significantly over the past 30 years on all five topics, especially as a result studies conducted in the United States. Fewer studies have been conducted in SSA but there has been an increasing number of publications over the past 10 years, especially from South Africa. Conclusions: Scientific and clinical partnerships between the industry, academia, and public healthcare sectors have contributed to a steady increase in hair and skin publications from SSA, which may be useful for the development of tailored products and public educational campaigns to raise awareness of the risks of using inappropriate products. Purpose: This study examined the impact, trends, and impact levels of factors affecting Pediculus capitis infestation in primary school students. Subject and methods: Among the papers reviewed, 226 were selected, as they contained information that suited the study objectives. Results: The factors whose trends have higher gradients have a higher impact on the infestation level. In order of impact, the gradients of hair washing frequency, health instructor involvement, bathing frequency, mother's and father's education, existence of bathing facility, family size, hairstyle, and family income trends are higher than hair length, and age and education trends. As a result, the factor impacts are diminished from the beginning to the end. The importance of the family size, father's and mother's education, bathing facility existence, health instructor involvement, and bathing and hair washing frequency factors, whose trends increased over time, is higher than family income, hairstyle and length, and age and education, whose trends remained constant or decreased. Based on the gradient of the factor level impact trends, it seems that hair washing frequency, father's and mother's education, and health instructor involvement are the factors with the greatest effects on infestation level, in that order. These are followed by the influence of family income and size, and hairstyle factors. The existence of bathing facilities, bathing frequency, hair length, and education factors have weaker effects. Conclusion: This work provides the importance and impact levels of factors affecting Pediculus capitis infestation levels in primary school students, which will help meet the needs of policymakers. Analysis of limescales, collected from the walls of kitchenware used to boil drinking water, were used as a surrogate for analysis of uranium in drinking water. Geological features of the territory mainly explained the spatial distribution of uranium concentrations in the samples. Furthermore, uranium was analysed in human hair samples from inhabitants of the region. The median concentration of U in drinking water limescale was 5.4 μg/g (range 0.01 to 61.0 μg/g), and in children's hair was 0.035 μg/g (range 0.001–0.179 μg/g). A significant correlation (R2 = 0.946) was detected between U in drinking water limescale and U concentration in human hair. Concentrations of uranium in limescales and human hair indicated that the current levels of exposure are in the range of values reported worldwide and are not particularly elevated. A novel, simple, fast and sensitive method for the simultaneous analysis of heavy metals such as Cd(II), Cr(III), Co(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) in hair samples based on complexometric method with EDTA and using solid-phase extraction with graphene oxide coupled with capillary electrophoresis has been developed. Under the optimised conditions, the proposed methodology had limits of detection from 5.7 to 16.8 µg kg−1 with intra- and inter-day repeatabilities <5% (in respect to relative standard deviation) in all cases. The proposed method was successfully employed for determination of heavy metals in the analysis of 20 hair samples. All samples were positive for at least one of the heavy metals studied with concentrations of 1.2 ± 1.0 mg kg−1 Cd(II), 7.2 ± 4.0 mg kg−1 Cr(III), 0.9 ± 0.8 mg kg−1 Co(II), 0.6 ± 0.2 mg kg−1 Pb(II) and 2.5 ± 0.3 mg kg−1 Cu(II). Hair is good bioindicator of exposure, due to its ability to store and retain trace elements for long periods of time. But it can be especially useful when hair dyes are used since they may contain potentially toxic salts in their composition. In this context, analytical methods for the determination of bismuth, cadmium, lead, and silver in scalp human hair by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry were successfully validated. A total of 60 samples obtained from women between 18 and 60 years were analyzed: 34 dyed hairs and 26 untreated hairs (control). Average results expressed in dry weight (dyed/control) for each element were 2.34/0.49 μg g−1 (silver), 0.142/0.139 μg g−1 (bismuth), 0.055/0.054 μg g−1 (cadmium), and 2.09/0.99 μg g−1 (lead), respectively. These results agreed with those previously reported for non-exposed populations. A statistically significant higher Ag concentration in dyed hairs was observed, suggesting the bioaccumulation of this element. The associations between metal concentration and variables of interest (age, education, smoking habit, dye brand, use of dietary supplements) were investigated. A strong Pearson correlation was found for the pair Ag/Pb (r = 0.494, p < 0.05). Also, strong associations between lead levels and all the selected variables were observed (p < 0.05), while strong associations between silver levels with age and dye brand and association between cadmium levels and smoking habit were found. Furthermore, several commercial hair dye brands were analyzed to verify compliance with cosmetic regulations. Intense infrared (IR) rays can heat matters and evaporate waters thermally. One of the possible applications will be hair dryer, although the irradiation effects of IR rays on the hair have not been fully explored. In this study, we first examined the interaction of IR rays at various wavelengths from 3.0 µm (near IR) to 90 µm (far IR) with the surface structure of human hair by using IR free electron lasers (FELs). IR-FEL is an accelerator-based pico-second pulse laser, and the feature is the wavelength-tunability with the high-photon density. When one thread of hair was irradiated by the FEL of 6–7 mJ energy at 60 µm, the cleavage occurred, and the morphological destruction was observed on scanning-electron microscopy images after the irradiations at 70 µm and 6.1 µm (amide I). Synchrotron-radiation infrared microspectroscopy showed that those FEL irradiations decreased a shoulder band at 1710 cm−1 that corresponds to carboxyl group in melanin or fatty acids and increased absorption intensity at 500–600 cm−1. On the contrary, the FEL at 90 µm little changed either the surface morphology or the infrared absorption spectra. Interestingly, near-IR FELs at 3.0–3.5 µm induced bending of a hair, and 2D mapping of protein secondary conformations revealed that β-sheet was more increased than the other conformations on the surface of the bending area even at low pulse energy (1–3 mJ). As a result, the structural damage of the hair was least at 90 µm, which implies an ideal wavelength for drying hair mildly.Article highlights: A unique assessment of hair structure is demonstrated by using accelerator-based infrared laser system. The hair coat and hair microstructure of an adult male Hydropotes inermis from the Primorsky Krai of Russia were studied for the first time by light and scanning electron microscopy. Lack of abundant underfur, sparse hair, and a weak layering are characteristic of the species, which inhabits the temperate monsoon and tropical zones and does not need an efficient thermal protection. An alveolar and lattice medulla of the hair is similar to that of other deer, is well developed, and increases the heat-protective properties of the hair because seasonal and daily fluctuations in temperature and humidity can be significant. The cuticle pattern is similar to that of the deer tribes Alceini and Capreolini. The hair thickness and length are substantial on the back, sides, and thighs, and the coat thus provides reliable protection from mechanical damage when the water deer moves through thickets of bushes and grasses along riverbanks and swamps in its habitats. Developing heteroatom-self-doped porous carbon electrode materials has been revealed to possess advanced electrochemical performances for supercapacitors. Herein, a facile two-step strategy is reported to prepare O-N-S self-doped porous fusiform carbon particles (FCPs) via carbonizing macroscopic-scale hair waste at an appropriate temperature. The as-prepared FCPs present a fusiform shape with a mean width of about 350 nm and a mean length of about 600 nm. Meanwhile, the as-obtained product possesses a typical hierarchical porous structure with a well level of O-N-S self-doped and a high specific surface area of 278 m2 g−1. These unique properties endow the as-obtained FCPs sample with a high specific capacitance of 253 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, the FCPs and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) respectively acted as negative/positive electrodes to assemble symmetrical supercapacitors. Finally, a high energy density of 14 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 533 W kg−1 in a cyclic reversibly voltage of 0–1.5 V is realized by the as-built FCPs//RGO supercapacitors, and connecting the two supercapacitors in series can power 38 LEDs. Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between the risk of contamination during aseptic procedures performed by nursing students and the hairstyle type of the student performing the procedure. Methods: This study employed an observational design. The participants were 139 nursing students recruited from two colleges. Participants with short hair were assigned to the short-hair group (Group 1) without randomization. The remaining participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: those who put their hair in a hairnet (Group 2), those who had their hair tied back (Group 3), and those who had their hair untied (Group 4). Raters used a checklist to assess participants' performance of aseptic procedures and contamination-related behaviors. Results: Compared to the group wearing a hairnet (Group 2), more contamination occurred in the group with long hair tied back (Group 3) or not tied up (Group 4) (p<.001). Hair-related contamination risk behaviors were significantly more common in students with untied long hair (Group 4) than in the other three groups (Group 1, 2, and 3) (p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that when performing aseptic procedures, measures are needed to prevent hair-related contamination by restraining the hair or using a hair cap. Current video face-swapping technologies face challenges such as poor facial fitting and the inability to handle obstructions. This paper introduces Amazing FaceSwap (AmazingFS), a novel framework for producing cinematic quality and realistic face swaps. Key innovations include the development of a Source-Target Attention Mechanism (STAM) to improve face-swap quality while preserving target face expressions and poses. We also enhanced the AdaIN style transfer module to better retain the identity features of the source face. To address obstructions like hair and glasses during face-swap synthesis, we created the AmazingSeg network and a small dataset AST. Objectives Methods Results Conclusion This paper aims to develop and validate a taxonomy for the assessment of the subjective experience of curly hair manageability. It represents the latter of two iterative stages of a mixed‐method design interdisciplinary project.The qualitative stage of the study incorporated thematic analysis of 14 interview transcripts generated using a video‐ethnographic method (SEBE). A survey‐based instrument assessing different elements of the construct of hair manageability designed during the first stage of this project was further developed following consultations with experts with extensive experience in hair research, product development, testing and trichology. The instrument was tested online with 506 female participants self‐reporting natural curly hair, types 3A and higher according to the Andre Walker Curl Classification.The initial construct of four groups of hair goals received positive content validity from the experts. High scale reliability was achieved for the aesthetic, haptic and emotive goals' scales as well as for hair esteem (Cronbach's alpha >0.75). Curl type was the only personal hair attribute that was correlated with hair goals and perceptions. From the demographic and lifestyle data, only age was correlated with goals and willingness to try new products. Common hair practices and product usage were also correlated with hair curl and goals.The appropriateness of the instrument for measuring the strength of different hair goals and perceptions relevant to hair curvature degree and hair esteem has been validated. The instrument will support the development and testing of products better aligned with the manageability needs of very curly and textured hair. The motivation for constructing a thin-shell wormhole from a (2+1)-dimensional rotating black hole arises from the desire to study the effects of a nonminimally coupled scalar field in this particular spacetime. By investigating the behavior of such a field in the presence of rotation, we can gain insights into the interplay between gravity and scalar fields in lower-dimensional systems. Additionally, this construction allows us to explore potential connections between black hole physics and exotic phenomena like traversable wormholes. The radial perturbation around the equilibrium throat radius is considered to explore the stable configuration for specific values of physical parameters. Then, the equations of state, specifically the phantom-like and generalized Chaplygin gas model for exotic matter is used to conduct an extensive investigation into the stability of the counter-rotating thin-shell wormholes. Phthalates used in the industry penetrate the environment and negatively affect humans and animals. Hair samples seem to be the best matrix for studies on long-term exposure to phthalates, but till now they were used only in investigations on humans. Moreover, the knowledge of the wild terrestrial animal exposure to phthalates is extremely limited. This study aimed to establish of concentration levels of selected phthalate metabolites (i.e. monomethyl phthalate—MMP, monoethyl phthalate—MEP, mono-isobutyl phthalate—MiBP, monobutyl phthalate—MBP, monobenzyl phthalate—MBzP, mono-cyclohexyl phthalate—MCHP, mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate—MEHP and mono-n-octyl phthalate—MOP) in wild boar hair samples using liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC–MS) analysis. MEHP was noted in 90.7% of samples with mean 66.17 ± 58.69 pg/mg (median 49.35 pg/mg), MMP in 59.3% with mean 145.1 ± 310.6 pg/mg (median 64.45 pg/mg), MiBP in 37.0% with mean 56.96 ± 119.4 pg/mg (median < limit of detection—LOD), MBP in 35.2% with mean 19.97 ± 34.38 pg/mg (median < LOD) and MBzP in 1.9% with concentration below limit of quantification. In the 1970s and 1980s, several Asian governments, including those of Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan, enacted varying measures to proscribe long hair on men. Singapore’s government was no exception in this regard, barring even longhaired global male celebrities from entry. Adopting a social semiotic perspective, this article traces the vicissitudes of the male hairscape in Singapore from the colonial period to contemporary times, with a view to uncovering its differential indexical meanings. It argues that the stigmatization of long hair was part of a moral-aesthetic regimen of hair hygiene that fashioned shorthaired men as poster boys of a young, disciplined, and aspirational nation, while longhaired men were discursively constructed as a bad influence and the archnemesis of a desired work culture and social life. Background: Hair characterization is critical for determining animal individuality throughout life. This study aimed to assess the morphological features of dromedary camel hair in relation to age. Materials and methods: Hair samples were obtained from the camel humps of 30 dromedary camels separated into three groups: G1 (n:10) aged one-year, G2 (n:10) aged 3–5 years, and G3 (n:10) at the age of 8–10 years. The hair was examined using light microscopy, SEM, and SEM-EDX. Results: The Maghrebi camel had varied medulla patterns and structures across the ages. In the G1 group 75% had continuous medulla patterns and amorphous medulla structures, compared to 70% in G2, and 90% in G3. The medulla index increased with age, rising from 0.3 to 0.77%. The shaft width grew in size from G1 to G2, then fell to approximately one-third of the G2 size at G3. The cortex and cuticle widths were also determined by age, and they increased in the G1 compared to G3 camels. The shape of the cuticle scales in G1 camels was wavy, like mountain tops with irregular edges, within G2 camels the scales were particularly long, oval-shaped scales with smooth, wavy borders. The scales of the older G3 camels were quite long and rectangular. SEM-EDX spectra recognized carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, calcium, aluminum, silicon, and potassium at the medulla and cortex. Sulfur levels were highest in the G2 samples but lowest in the G1 samples. Background Objective Methods Results Conclusion Collagen, a key protein in the body maintains hair, skin and bone health and its production tends to decrease in synthesis as humans age. The demand for vegan collagen‐builder has increased worldwide due to increased adaptability to vegan diet.This clinical study was designed aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of vegan collagen builder (VEGCOL™️) at different dosages (2.5, 5, and 10 g) in adult participants.Total 66 subjects (22 subjects/dose) aged 30 to 50 years were enrolled, and 63 subjects completed the study. Duration of study was 60 days. Evaluations included change in skin elasticity, hydration, crow's feet area wrinkles, fine lines, skin, Glogau skin age, change in pain scale score, muscle strength and subject perception assessment about test treatment use.After 60 days of treatment, there was significant improvement in hair growth rate by 45.01%, 38.54% and 50.37% with p < 0.01 for doses 2.5, 5, and 10 g respectively. Additionally, 19.64% (p < 0.0001) and 20.51% (p < 0.0001) increase in hair density and hair thickness respectively was observed with 10 g dose. 2.5 g dose resulted in 33.03% (p < 0.01) increase in skin smoothness and 49.94% (p < 0.0001) decrease in crow's feet area wrinkles, decreased retraction time by 21.71 milliseconds (p < 0.05). 52.54% reduction in pain score (p < 0.001). No any adverse events were reported.Vegan collagen‐builder effectively improved multiple age‐related concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, joint pain, muscle strength and hair growth. All respondents perceived the product as beneficial in improving the aesthetics of the skin, hair, and nails. This article explores the potential use of rose stem cell-derived exosomes for treating hair loss in individuals with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). AGA is a common type of hair loss characterized by shrinking hair follicles. Current treatments for AGA can have negative side effects, so researchers are investigating alternative options. In a case study, a 54-year-old man with AGA received treatment with rose stem cell-derived exosomes using a noninvasive method. The treatment resulted in noticeable improvements in hair density, thickness, and regrowth. However, it is important to note that further research is needed to validate these findings, including larger studies with control groups and exploration of long-term effects, mechanisms, and cost-effectiveness. Objectives: Mildred Trotter was an anatomist and physical anthropologist whose studies on hair morphology, growth, somatic distribution, and trait relationships to age and ethnogeographic population were foundational to the field of microscopical hair analysis. The collection of human hair samples she assembled for her research has been an underutilized resource for studies on human hair variation. We applied updated methods and reviewed Trotter's original data to reassess the relationship hair traits have to diverse population labels. Methods: Hair form and pigmentation patterns were measured from a subset of the hair samples accumulated by Trotter and we compared our data to Trotter's original results. Variability in hair traits were tested within individuals, within populations, and among ethnogeographic groups. Results: Measured hair cross‐section dimensions and melanosome density and distribution revealed substantial variability within individuals and ethnogeographic populations. Hair traits were found to not be distinctly separable by ancestry but instead showed continuous variation across human populations. Trotter's measurements were precise and the dataset she compiled remains valid, though the conclusions should be reviewed in light of our current understanding of human variation. Discussion: Our findings support moving away from categorical ancestry classifications and eliminating the use of outdated racial typologies in favor of more descriptive trait analysis. Detailed analysis of trait pattern distributions are presented that may be useful for future research on human variation.
