Melanoma is estimated to make up 4.6% of all new cancer cases (76,100) and is responsible for 1.7% of all cancer deaths annually (9710) [1]. The 5-year survival rate for melanoma is currently 91.3%. However, survival varies widely based on stage at diagnosis with a 5-year survival rate of 98.1%, 62.6%, and 16.1% for individuals with localized disease (stages 0–II), regional spread to lymph nodes (stage III), and distant cancer metastasis (stage IV), respectively [1]. Despite efforts to develop new therapies, the prognosis for individuals with advance disease remains poor [2].
