1. Investigation of modified platelet-rich plasma (mPRP) in promoting the proliferation and differentiation of dental pulp stem cells from deciduous teeth

Abstract

Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs) have great potential to treat various dental-related diseases in regenerative medicine. They are usually maintained with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) in vitro. Modified platelet-rich plasma (mPRP) would be a safe alternative to 10% FBS during SHEDs culture. Therefore, our study aimed to compare the proliferation and differentiation of SHEDs cultured in mPRP and FBS medium to explore an optimal concentration of mPRP for SHEDs maintenance. Platelets were harvested by automatic blood cell analyzer and activated by repeated liquid nitrogen freezing and thawing. The platelet-related cytokines were examined and analyzed by ELISA. SHEDs were extracted and cultured with different concentrations of mPRP or 10% FBS medium. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was measured. Mineralization factors, RUNX2 and OCN, were measured by real-time PCR. SHEDs were characterized with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) markers including vimentin, CD44, and CD105. mPRP at different concentrations (2, 5, 10, and 20%) enhanced the growth of SHEDs. Moreover, mPRP significantly stimulated ALP activity and promoted expression of RUNX2 and OCN compared with 10% FBS. mPRP could efficiently facilitate proliferation and differentiation of SHEDs, and 2% mPRP would be an optimal substitute for 10% FBS during SHEDs expansion and differentiation in clinical scale manufacturing.

2. Distributed parameter model and experimental validation of a compressive-mode energy harvester under harmonic excitations

Abstract

This paper presents the modeling and parametric analysis of the recently proposed nonlinear compressive-mode energy harvester (HC-PEH) under harmonic excitation. Both theoretical and experimental investigations are performed in this study over a range of excitation frequencies. Specially, a distributed parameter electro-elastic model is analytically developed by means of the energy-based method and the extended Hamilton’s principle. An analytical formulation of bending and stretching forces are derived to gain insight on the source of nonlinearity. Furthermore, the analytical model is validated against with experimental data and a good agreement is achieved. Both numerical simulations and experiment illustrate that the harvester exhibits a hardening nonlinearity and hence a broad frequency bandwidth, multiple coexisting solutions and a large-amplitude voltage response. Using the derived model, a parametric study is carried out to examine the effect of various parameters on the harvester voltage response. It is also shown from parametric analysis that the harvester’s performance can be further improved by selecting the proper length of elastic beams, proof mass and reducing the mechanical damping.

3. Effect of Lactation Environment on Behaviour of Suckling Piglets

Abstract

To investigate the effect of the pen on the welfare of suckling piglets by comparing the behaviours of piglets in either crates or straw enriched pens, sixteen litter piglets in crates or straw enriched pens were used in the present experiment. In the 2–5 weeks after birth, the behaviours of suckling piglets from 07:00 to 9:00 and 13:00 to 15:00 on the third and sixth day of each week were observed to compare between different environments. The results showed that a straw pen can significantly reduce piglets’ directed behaviour toward penmates and the pen (p < 0.01), while piglets in crates had more standing (p < 0.01) and manipulating (p < 0.05), and fewer walking (p < 0.01) and lying (p < 0.05) behaviours. In straw pens, social interaction, straw- manipulating, manipulating in general, and non-sucking activities of piglets reached a peak in W3 (p < 0.05). In the crate, walking in piglets decreased with age (p < 0.05). Moreover, in the crates, piglets performed more lying, and less standing and walking in the morning observation period (p < 0.01), and all activity increased (p< 0.01) except suckling behaviour in the afternoon observation period, but there was a significant difference in only suckling behaviour for straw pen piglets (p < 0.01). In conclusion, straw reduced manipulating in suckling piglets toward the pen or penmates. Adding straw in suitable periods for suckling piglets could improve the behaviours of piglets.

6. A preliminary study on the hollow anode of a 450 kV rod-pinch diode

Abstract

This paper proposes a hollow rod as the anode of a rod-pinch diode (RPD) at about 450 kV voltage. Two kinds of hollow rod anodes that may enhance the central radiation dose are obtained through PIC and Monte Carlo simulations. The experimental results show that the hollow anode made by Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) can effectively enhance the forward central dose of the 450 kV rod-pinch diode, which helps to improve the radiation imaging definition.

Abstract

TiB2–40 wt% TiC composites were prepared by pressureless sintering. Prior to the conventional heating at 2000 °C for 1 h for final densification, addition of a low temperature hold at 1500 °C for 4 h was found effective in densification of the composite, refining the microstructure and promoting the anisotropic growth of TiB2 grains. The TiB2-TiC composite prepared by two-step sintering had better mechanical properties with flexural strength of 776 MPa and fracture toughness of 7.43 MPa m1/2, in comparison with the values of 419 MPa and 4.81 MPa m1/2 for composite by conventional one-step sintering.

Abstract

A series of TiB2–TiC composites were successfully fabricated through one-step and two-step pressureless sintering using powders obtained by high-energy ball-milling. Effects of ball-milling time on crystal size and morphology of powders as well as microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of TiB2–TiC composites were investigated. The crystal size of TiB2–TiC powders decreases to 14.7 nm after ball milling for 30 h. Two-step pressureless sintering is beneficial to the densification process without obvious grain coarsening. The core-rim structure of carbides in TiB2–TiC composites is formed by nonuniform diffusion of W atoms from the outside to the interior of TiC grains. The phenomenon of selective solution of WC into TiC grains was carried out through experiments and verification of first-principles DFT calculations. An in-situ TiB2 plate toughened microstructure is developed for TiB2-40 wt %TiC composites two-step sintered at 1500 °C for 4 h and 2000 °C for 1 h with excellent comprehensive performances.

Abstract

This paper aims at investigating the nonlinear vibration characteristics of the piezoelectric elliptic thin plate under the combined action of external harmonic excitation and temperature field. Based on the Von-Karman plate theory of large deflection, the nonlinear governing equation is derived by using the Bubnov-Galerkin method. Then, the amplitude-frequency response equations are further obtained using the multi-scale method, and the stability conditions of the steady solution are determined according to the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. The effects of the temperature difference at the plate center, the effective damping coefficient, the external excitation amplitude, and the ratio of the semi-major axis to the semi-minor axis on superharmonic and subharmonic resonances behaviors of the piezoelectric elliptic thin plate are analyzed. It is found that the coexistence region of multiple solutions and the resonant amplitude decrease for superharmonic resonance, as the temperature difference at the plate center increases. For subharmonic resonance, with the increase in the temperature difference at the plate center, the response amplitude increases, while the distance between two branches of the amplitude-frequency response curve has no obvious change. The softened/hardened nonlinear characteristics of the system are determined by the ratio of the semi-major axis to the semi-minor axis of the piezoelectric elliptic thin plate.

13. High thermoelectric performance of Ge1−xPbxSe0.5Te0.5 due to (Pb, Se) co-doping

Abstract

Ge-rich Ge1−xPbxTe0.5Se0.5 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) alloys with high thermoelectric performance were prepared through a conventional melting, solutioning and quenching route, followed by a spark plasma sintering technique. Se doping extends the solid solubility of Pb in GeTe. The samples maintain the rhombohedral GeTe-based solid solution up to x = 0.3, while the samples with x = 0.4 and 0.5 are composites containing the major rhombohedral GeTe-based supersaturated solid solution and a mixture of the minor NaCl-type PbTe-based and rhombohedral GeTe-based phases separated from the supersaturated solid solution. All the samples show p-type conduction. The solute Pb and Se atoms in the GeTe lattice may modify the carrier concentration, leading to a significant increase in the Seebeck coefficient. The solute Pb and Se atoms, twinning microstructures and the grain boundaries or secondary phase may form broad-based phonon scattering centers, leading to alloys with extremely low thermal conductivity. In the results, the overall high thermoelectric properties were obtained in the alloys due to (Pb, Se) co-doping. A maximum ZT of 1.6 at 673 K was eventually achieved in Ge0.75Pb0.25Te0.5Se0.5; this value is higher than that of pure PbTe or GeTe compounds and any other reported PbTe–GeTe composites.

Abstract

Avian chimeras have been shown to be very useful tools for studying embryonic development. Blastodermal cells form stage X embryos and primordial germ cells (PGCs) are extensively used in chimera production. Intraspecies and interspecies germline chimeras have been successfully produced by transferring blastodermal cells or PGCs into recipient blastoderm at stage X or into the early embryonic blood. The long-term culture system established using pluripotent cells from birds provides an alternative method for preserving the endangered species source and facilitates the manipulation of avian transgenesis. A high rate of donor cell-derived progeny production has always been pursued by germline chimera studies. However, the rate of progeny production was unstable. Different methods have been used in an attempt to improve the efficiency of germline chimera production. Several methods have been shown to greatly enhance the efficiency of donor cell-derived progeny production. In this review, we focus on the strategies used for germline chimera production in birds and discuss the factors and measures affecting the efficiency of obtaining donor cell-derived progeny.

15. Numerical simulation of thermal stratification in an elbow branch pipe of a tee junction with and without leakage

Abstract

Thermal stratification can cause thermal fatigue of the piping system of a nuclear power plant. One of the regions most at risk of suffering from thermal fatigue is a small elbow pipe branching off from the main pipe of the coolant loop for the drain or letdown system in the chemical and volume control system (CVCS). This work focuses on a fundamental description of the thermal stratification caused by turbulent penetration and buoyancy effects in the elbow branch pipe using large-eddy simulations (LESs). The LES results for the normalized temperature, mean temperature, and root-mean square (RMS) temperature were found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data which confirms that LES can predict the thermal stratification in a closed elbow branch pipe where cold fluids are stagnant. Subsequently, the flow and heat transfer were numerically predicted using LES when leakage occurred in the elbow branch pipe. The numerical results show that the thermal stratification region is pushed towards the horizontal part and may remain there for a long time for a leakage ratio of 1%. However, thermal stratification is quickly eliminated for a leakage ratio of 5%, although there is a higher power spectrum density (PSD) of the temperature in the early stages of the leakage. It may be concluded that a small leakage ratio can result in the elbow branch pipe being at high risk of thermal fatigue caused by thermal stratification.

It can be concluded that thermal stratification will last a long time in a straight pipe when the leakage is sufficiently small to maintain the thermal equilibrium between heat added from the main pipe and heat released to the environment, and the momentum balance between turbulence and buoyancy.

17. Effect of N and P codoping on ZnO properties

Abstract

Nitrogen and Phosphorus co-doped (N+P)- zinc oxide (ZnO) films were RF sputtered on corning glass substrates at 350 °C and comparatively studied with undoped, N-, and P- doped ZnO. X-ray diffraction spectra confirmed that the ZnO structure with a preferred orientation along direction. Scanning electron microscope analysis showed different microstructure for the N+P co-doping, and thus probably confirming the co-existence of both the dopants. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra revealed that the chemical composition in N+P co-doped ZnO are different from that found in undoped, N-, and P- doped ZnO. The atomic ratio of N and P in N+P co-doped ZnO is higher than that in single N or P doped ZnO. One broad ZnO emission peak around 420 nm is observed in photoluminescence spectra. The relative intensity of the strongest peak obtained from co-doped ZnO films is about twice than the P- doped and thrice than the pure and N- doped films.

Abstract

Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) techniques have become increasingly popular in recent years and are able to incorporate and develop ontology model within the classification process. They have been claimed to represent a paradigm shift in remote sensing interpretation. Nevertheless, it is lack of formal expression and objective modelling of the whole process of GEOBIA, and lack of the study of semantic classification method using ontology. A major reason is the complexity of the process of GEOBIA. The study has put forward an object-based semantic classification method of high resolution satellite imagery using ontology that aims to fully exploit the advantages of ontology to GEOBIA. A detailed workflow has been introduced that has three steps: ontology modelling, initial classification based on data-driven machine learning method, and semantic classification based on knowledge-driven expert rules method. The whole process of GEOBA is organized organically and expressed explicitly using ontology, and the semantic relations are expressed in the formal language that the computer could operate. Image objects are classified based on ontology model and using machine learning method and expert rules. From the result it is well understood that the method enhances the existing GEOBIA techniques with the help of the ontology, which expresses and organizes the whole process of GEOBIA, and establishes their relations, and provides semantic meaning for GEOBIA. In particular, we found that it provides an ontology model and method for further classifications and large scale applications, and the method using ontology is suitable for automatic classification.

Abstract

Zn4Sb3 bulk alloys with addition of Ag, Pb or In were prepared by high- frequency induction melting and post-annealing. X-ray powder diffraction analysis showed that the lattice of the compound was distorted by the additions. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis revealed that the phase transition from β to α or α to α′ was suppressed by the addition of In or Ag. A high carrier concentration and high thermal conductivity were found in the sample with Ag or In additions. However, lower electric resistivity, nearly the same Seebeck coefficient, and low thermal conductivity, as compared with the undoped sample, were found in the sample with Pb addition, leading to good thermoelectric performance. The highest ZT value of 1.12 at 605 K was achieved for the Pb0.02Zn4Sb3 sample in this work, which is about 30% larger than that for the undoped β-Zn4Sb3.

22. Theoretical Gasification Index Model for Actual Fuel Gasified with Air and Air/Steam

Abstract

Based on mass balance, energy balance and chemical equilibrium, a theoretical gasification index model for actual fuel gasified with air and air/steam was established considering the key reactions of ultimate compositions in the fuel. The model can be used to predict the gasification index, such as the syngas composition, the syngas calorific value, gasification efficiency and syngas yield. The theoretical gasification indexes of some coal and biomass were obtained by this model. The simulated results show that: For the actual fuel, the syngas calorific value for air gasification is lower than that for air/steam gasification, and the syngas calorific value from coal is lower than that from biomass, whereas the syngas yield from coal is higher than that from biomass.

Abstract

An integrated environmental accounting of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR) is presented, based on an emergy analysis using data on environmental and economic inputs and outputs within and without IMAR from 1987 to 2007. This includes an analysis of resource and economic structure and trade status. Using these metrics, IMAR is compared with other Chinese regions, as well as the nation as a whole, with respect to the performance and stainability of their respective ecological-economic systems. Results show that more than 85% of the emergy in IMAR was derived from home region sources, indicating a strong capacity for self-sufficiency, even if this amount as a percentage of the total declined from about 93 to 87 percent over the 20 year period. These results also show, that the value of the emergy-based stainability index (1.86 in 2007) indicates that IMAR is a sustainable system over medium length time periods. However, the imbalance of trade, the over-dependence on nonrenewable resources, and the high amounts of waste produced per unit of emergy expended, will all hinder the stainability of the system in the longer term context. Suggestions for public policy choices, relevant to these findings, are discussed.

Abstract

The present study aimed at detecting the association of ovine major histocompatibility complex class II (Ovar II) DRB1 gene second exon and susceptibility or resistance to hydatidosis in three sheep breeds of Sinkiang. The MHC-DRB1 second exon was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from DNA samples of healthy sheep and sheep with hydatidosis. PCR products were characterized by the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique. Five restriction enzymes, MvaI, HaeIII, SacI, SacII, Hin1I, were used, yielding 14 alleles and 31 restriction patterns. Frequencies of patterns MvaIbc, Hin1Iab, SacIIab, HaeIIIde, HaeIIIdf, HaeIIIdd (P < 0.01) in Kazakh sheep, SacIab (P < 0.05) in Duolang sheep, and HaeIIIab, HaeIIIce, HaeIIIde, HaeIIIee (P < 0.01) in Chinese Merino (Sinkiang Junken type) sheep, were significantly higher in healthy sheep compared with infected sheep. These results indicated a strong association between these patterns and hydatidosis resistance. In contrast, the frequencies of MvaIbb, SacIIaa, Hin1Ibb, HaeIIIef (P < 0.01) and HaeIIIab (P < 0.05) in Kazakh sheep, SacIbb, HaeIIIae, Hin1Iab (P < 0.05), HaeIIIaa, HaeIIIbe, HaeIIIef (P < 0.01) in Duolang sheep, SacIIaa (P < 0.05) and HaeIIIbd, Hin1Ibb, HaeIIIcf, HaeIIIef (P < 0.01) in Chinese Merino sheep (Sinkiang Junken type) were significantly lower in healthy sheep compared with infected sheep. This indicated a strong association between these patterns and hydatidosis susceptibility. In addition, sheep with the pattern of HaeIIIef demonstrated a high hydatidosis susceptibility (P < 0.01) in all three breeds, while sheep with the pattern HaeIIIde demonstrated significant hydatidosis resistance (P < 0.01) in Kazakh and Chinese Merino sheep (Sinkiang Junken type). These results suggest that the Ovar-DRB1 gene plays a role in resistance to hydatidosis infection in the three sheep breeds.

Abstract

In this paper, photorefractive properties of MnO and Fe 2 O 3 co-doped near stoichiometric LiNbO 3 (SLN) crystals are studied. The SLN crystals were co-doped with 0.005 wt.% Fe 2 O 3 and MnO at the concentration of 0, 0.003, 0.005, and 0.01 wt.%, respectively. The crystals have been grown by the top seeded solution growth (TSSG) method by adding K 2 O flux to Li 2 O–Nb 2 O 5 melt. Their structures are analyzed by the UV–vis spectra and IR spectra. The recording and erasure curves were measured by the two-wave coupling experiments with He–Ne laser. From the recording and erasure curves at the incident angle of 25° in the air, diffraction efficiency, writing time, erasure time, the dynamic range ( M /#), and sensitivity ( S ) of the crystals were measured and calculated.

Abstract

Annealed and cold rolled pure copper targets were impacted by 4 mm diameter GCrl5 steel ball with a speed of 1.5 km/s. The microstructure near the crater and the influence of cold rolling on the homogeneity of deformation under impact were studied. The results show that the cold rolling deformation improves the homogeneity of bulk deformation near the crater. Abundant microbands (MBs) are observed near craters of the two types of target by transmission electron microscope (TEM), and no twins are found. Linear features are observed in grains 2–3 mm away from the crater. TEM observations show that these linear features are very fine microbands.

Abstract

Mg?:?Mn?:?Fe?:?LiNbO3 crystals were prepared with fixed concentrations of Fe2O3 and MnCO3, and differing concentrations of MgO. Their ultraviolet?visible absorption spectra were measured in order to investigate their defect structures and their optical damage resistance was characterized by the transmitted beam pattern distortion method. The optical damage resistance of Mg?:?Mn?:?Fe?:?LiNbO3 crystals increases remarkably when the concentration of MgO exceeds a threshold concentration. The photoinduced birefringence change was measured by the S?narmont method. It decreased with increasing MgO concentration. The dependence of the optical damage resistance on the defect structure of Mg?:?Mn?:?Fe?:?LiNbO3 crystals is discussed.

Abstract

A series of Zn:Er:LiNbO 3 crystals were grown by Czochralski technique with 0.75 mol% of Er 2 O 3 and with 0, 3.0, 5.5, and 7.0 mol% of ZnO, respectively, and were made into waveguides. The optical damage resistance of the Zn:Er:LiNbO 3 waveguides was characterized by measurement of the holographic method. The optical damage resistance of Zn (7.0 mol%):Er:LiNbO 3 is much higher than that of other Zn:Er:LiNbO 3 . The ultraviolet–visible (UV) absorption spectra and the infrared (IR) transmission spectra of Zn:Er:LiNbO 3 crystals were measured and investigated. The structure defects were discussed in this paper to explain the improve of the optical damage resistance in the Zn:Er:LiNbO 3 crystals.

Abstract

With severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) as an emergent human virus since December 2019, the world population is susceptible to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 has higher transmissibility than the previous coronaviruses, associated by the ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus nature with high mutation rate, caused SARS-CoV-2 variants to arise while circulating worldwide. Neutralizing antibodies are identified as immediate and direct-acting therapeutic against COVID-19. Single-domain antibodies (sdAbs), as small biomolecules with non-complex structure and intrinsic stability, can acquire antigen-binding capabilities comparable to conventional antibodies, which serve as an attractive neutralizing solution. SARS-CoV-2 spike protein attaches to human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor on lung epithelial cells to initiate viral infection, serves as potential therapeutic target. sdAbs have shown broad neutralization towards SARS-CoV-2 with various mutations, effectively stop and prevent infection while efficiently block mutational escape. In addition, sdAbs can be developed into multivalent antibodies or inhaled biotherapeutics against COVID-19.

Abstract

By optimizing temperature field and growth parameters, double-doped Zn:Fe:LiNbO 3 (LN) crystals are grown by Czochralski technique. Samples with oxidation/reduction treatments have been prepared. The holographic properties of the Zn:Fe:LiNbO 3 were experimentally investigated by using two-beam coupling experiment. It is found that the holographic properties of the Zn:Fe:LiNbO 3 crystals are improved compared with that of Fe/LiNbO 3 crystal. The holographic properties depend on the oxidation/reduction treatment. The doping mechanism is discussed simply.

Abstract

Hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) is a promising porphyrin-related photosensitize for photodynamic therapy (PDT). There still remains unknown changes regarding the mitochondrial in canine breast cancer cells treated with HMME-PDT. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of HMME-PDT on structure and dysfunction of mitochondrial in cancer cells. The experimental approach included an initial study on the uptake of HMME using microscopic observation of the HMME-treated cells, optimization of the PDT-induced cell death by the MTT assay. These cells were then treated with HMME and a He-Ne laser at the wavelength of 632.8 nm following our optimized condition. Examination of mitochondrial changes by observing the stained cells under light microscope, mitochjondrial membrane potential flow cytometry, measuring the Ca(2+), SOD/GSH activity, ATPase and MDA contents for the mitochondria functions. The kinetics of HMME uptake in CHMm cells was determined and its cytocolic instead of nuclear distribution was demonstrated. The dose of 16mM HMME-PDT combined with 2.8 J/cm(2) laser irradiation was had the maximal impact on cell viability. This treatment resulted in structural changes in mitochondria that were accompanied with the loss of mitochjondrial membrane potential. As a result, HMME-PDT increased mitochondrial ROS, inhibited the enzymatic activities of mitochondrial SOD and GSH-Px, abolished mitochondrial ability in the uptake and release of calcium, and decreased mitochondrial ATPase activity. The combination of these abnormalities led to accumulation of ROS in mitochondrial to high levels, which in turn contributed to HMME-PDT-induced damages of mitochondrial structure and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Abstract

The micro-damage of Ti–6Al–4V alloy under high velocity projectile impact was studied. The results show that adiabatic shear bands are very easy to form in the target material and primarily distribute in the area adjacent to the crater. The voids and micro-cracks are formed in the adiabatic shear bands during the impact process. The formation of adiabatic shear bands is discussed.

Abstract

This paper presents a new object-oriented classification method based on statistical region merging (SRM) for segmentation and support vector machine (SVM) for classification where polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data are used. The proposed approach makes use of polarimetric information of PolSAR data, and takes advantage of SRM and SVM. The SRM segmentation method not only considers spectral, shape, scale information, but also has the ability to cope with significant noise corruption, handle occlusions. The SVM used for classification takes its advantages of solving sparse sampling, non-linear, high-dimensional, and global optimum problems comparing with other classifiers. It is thus expected that the input vectors of SVM will include fully polarimetric information for image classification. A test image, acquired by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Airborne SAR (AIRSAR) system, is used to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method. It is shown that the proposed approach outperforms the traditional pixel-based SVM classification method for land cover classification with PolSAR data, and the integration of SRM and SVM makes the proposed algorithm an attractive and alternative method for polarimetric SAR classification.

Multi-scale segmentation is an essential step toward higher level image processing in remote sensing. This paper presents a new multi-scale segmentation method based on statistical region merging (SRM) for initial segmentation and minimum heterogeneity rule (MHR) for merging objects where high resolution (HR) QuickBird imageries are used. It synthesized the advantages of SRM and MHR. The SRM segmentation method not only considers spectral, shape, scale information, but also has the ability to cope with significant noise corruption, handle occlusions. The MHR used for merging objects takes advantages of its spectral, shape, scale information, and the local, global information. Compared with Fractal Net Evolution Approach (FNEA) eCognition adopted and SRM methods, the results showed that the proposed method overcame the disadvantages of them and was an effective multi-scale segmentation method for HR imagery.

Abstract

Recently, more and more high resolution remote sensing images appear, and they provide new data source for building extraction. Some building extraction methods are proposed to adapt to this trend. This paper addresses a semi-automatic method that combines segmentation and region selection. First, mean shift segmentation is applied to the image, and then the region extraction is implemented through the interactively selection of building parts. Edge detection is also involved to get the boundary of buildings. At last, the paper gives the contrast of the unsupervised classification ISODATA result and this extraction method.

Abstract

Conventional map-to-map comparison method is used frequently to land use change detection from remote sensing data. However, only the spectral information is used in the process of classification. The accuracy is very low. This paper applies object-oriented image analysis to the change detection and can overcome the limitation stated above. It classifies through selecting samples, using multi-scale image segmentation techniques, allowing the integration of a broad spectrum of different object features, such as spectral values, shape, texture and thematic information. In the study, it detects the land use change information of the test area during ten years through the method based on object-oriented analysis. The result is satisfying and can provide the foundation for sustaining development of land resource.

Abstract

We have observed B0-B0 mixing in Z0→bb decays using hadronic events containing dileptons. The data sample corresponds to 118 200 hadron events at √s≈Mz. From a fit to the dilepton p and p⊥ spectra, we determine the mixing parameter to be χB=0.178-0.040 +0.049. © 1990.

Abstract

The L3 experiment is one of the six large detectors designed for the new generation of electron-positron accelerators. It is the only detector that concentrates its efforts on limited goals of measuring electrons, muons and photons. By not attempting to identify hadrons, L3 has been able to provide an order of magnitude better resolution for electrons, muons and photons. Vertices and hadron jets are also studied. The construction of L3 has involved much state of the art technology in new principles of vertex detection and in new crystals for large scale electromagnetic shower detection and ultraprecise muon detection. This paper presents a summary of the construction of L3.

Abstract

We have searched for charged and neutral leptons. We exclude stable Dirac neutrinos below 42.8 GeV and stable Majorana neutrinos below 34.8 GeV. From a search for unstable neutrinos we exclude masses below 46.4 GeV (Dirac) and below 45.1 GeV (Majorana). We exclude all masses of sequential charged and neutral leptons, except if both masses are larger than 42.8 GeV (for stable Dirac neutrinos). All mass limits correspond to 95% CL.

Abstract

The bispectral index (BIS) and the rapidly extracted auditory evoked potentials index (A-line ARX Index or AAI) have been proposed as methods to measure the depth of sedation. A prospective study was designed to assess the performance of both these methods for measuring the depth of sedation induced by propofol or midazolam under epidural block.Thirty-two ASA I and II adult patients undergoing elective gynaecological surgery under low-thoracolumbar epidural block were studied. Eighteen patients received propofol (Group P: 20 mg bolus every 3 min) and 14 received midazolam (Group M: 0.5 mg bolus every 5 min) until an observer's assessment of alertness/sedation (OAA/S) scale score of 1 was achieved. AAI and BIS were monitored for different OAA/S scores.AAI and BIS decreased and increased following the changes on the patients' OAA/S scores and correlated with sedation significantly. During the onset phase, the coefficients of Spearman's rank correlation for AAI and BIS were respectively 0.958 and 0.898 (P0.001) for Group P, and 0.973 and 0.945 (P0.001) for Group M. During the recovery phase in Group P, the coefficients were respectively 0.946 and 0.702 (P0.001). Linear regression analysis showed that both AAI and BIS were linearly related to the OAA/S scores. The coefficients of Spearman's rank correlation and linear regression for AAI were all greater than those for BIS (P0.05).Both AAI and BIS correlated well with the depth of sedation induced by propofol or midazolam under epidural block. AAI may be more valuable when monitoring depth of sedation.

Abstract

Salt stress is one of the most important stresses that affect coastal vegetation. A halophyte Carex pumila plays a crucial role in the maintenance of fragile ecosystems in coastal areas. Thus, understanding the mechanism of C. pumila responses to salt stress is a prerequisite for the conservation and utilization of this species. After treatment with 200, 300, 400, 500 mM NaCl for 60 h, C. pumila leaves displayed a decline in the relative water content and an increase in salt injury index. Osmolyte accumulation, as a function of osmotic adjustment, and antioxidant enzyme activities were maintained under salinity, even at a high NaCl concentration. High NaCl concentrations severely affected the photosystem II, the JIP-test indicated a significant decrease in performance indexes and quantum efficiencies and an increase in phenomenological fluxes. Metabolic analyses showed the changes of 39 metabolites, including 16 kinds of organic acids, 9 kinds of amino acids, 9 kinds of sugars, 3 kinds of sugar alcohols, and 2 amines. The identified metabolites were mainly involved in the glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway, and tricarboxylic acids cycle.

Abstract

The electromagnetic calorimeter of the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE j-factory is a lead-scintillating fibre sampling device. This calorimeter is arranged as a "barrel" closed at both ends with an "end-cap" consists in 24 modules defining a cylinder, 4,3 long, with 4 m inner diameter. Each end-caps consists of 32 modules running vertically along the chords of the circle inscribed into the barrel. In this paper the calorimeter construction techniques are described.

Abstract

Within a context of evolution and the rapid integration of digitization in university publishing, the fields of the humanities and social sciences, and in particular those of textbooks, do not appear to have found a satisfactory distribution model. In this article, we shall attempt to explain in what measure this sector is different from other areas of university publishing and what hypotheses can be put forward for its future development. Having suggested a carving up of the university publishing market, we would like to place it briefly in an international context. On the basis of this finding, we will present the hypothesis of aggregation: why this should be required, why it does not yet exist and which needs it will respond to. We shall conclude by summarizing these points which we believe are key to the development of a digital university offer in France for the humanities and social sciences.
