Abstract

Abstract We used computational and experimental biology approaches to identify candidate mechanisms of action of aTraditional Chinese Medicine, Compound Kushen Injection (CKI), in a breast cancer cell line (MDA-MB-231). Because CKI is a complex mixture of plant secondary metabolites, we used a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fractionation and reconstitution approach to define chemical fractions required for CKI to induce apoptosis. The initial fractionation separated major from minor compounds, and it showed that major compounds accounted for little of the activity of CKI. Furthermore, removal of no single major compound altered the effect of CKI on cell viability and apoptosis. However, simultaneous removal of two major compounds identified oxymatrine and oxysophocarpine as critical with respect to CKI activity. Transcriptome analysis was used to correlate compound removal with gene expression and phenotype data. Many compounds in CKI are required to trigger apoptosis but significant modulation of its activity is conferred by a small number of compounds. In conclusion, CKI may be typical of many plant based extracts that contain many compounds in that no single compound is responsible for all of the bioactivity of the mixture and that many compounds interact in a complex fashion to influence a network containing many targets.

Abstract

Fullerene decorated by iron compound (C60-Fe) was fabricated via solution reaction and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectra and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. By a partial replacement of intumescent flame retardant (IFR) in flame retarded polyethylene (PE) by C60-Fe, the flame retardant properties of PE/IFR composites were increased dramatically. When 2 wt% IFR was substituted by C60-Fe, a compact and continuous char barrier was formed, resulting in the reduction of the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and the total heat released (THR). Also, the ignition time (tign) prolonged form 67 to 114 s and the time to PHRR (tPHRR) prolonged form 208 to 455 s. The improvement on flame retardancy of PE/IFR/C60-Fe composites was due to the synergistic influence between the catalytic charring ability of Fe and the free radical trapping effect of C60.

7. Correlation between presence of primary iris- and cilliary body cysts and intraocular pressure

Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between the presence of primary iris-ciliary cysts and the intraocular pressure.Sixty patients with short-sightedness undergoing routine examination for laser vision correction in our hospital in 2003 were enrolled. Patients with known high intraocular pressure and risk of glaucoma were excluded from the study. A total of 119 eyes were examined by the Ultrasound Biomicroscope (UBM), and the presence of the primary iris-ciliary cysts was confirmed. Intraocular pressure was measured by using a blowing tonometer for each eye in triplicate. Through Pentacam correction of intraocular pressure using the Ehlers formula, the influence of the thickness of central cornea on intraocular pressure was excluded.Among all participants, 62 eyes (52.1%) were with high myopia, 57 eyes (47.9%) with low and moderate myopia, 27 eyes (22.7%) with single cyst, 20 eyes (16.8%) with multiple cysts, and 72 eyes (60.5%) were free from cysts. Moreover, the intraocular pressure was found within the normal range in 72 eyes (60.5%), and abnormally high in 47 eyes (39.5%).Our results showed that the presence of primary iris-ciliary cysts and the intraocular pressure were positively correlated, with a correlation coefficient of 0.235 (p = 0.01). These findings may prove useful for prediction and screening of high intraocular pressure.

Abstract

MiRNAs are small, noncoding RNA molecules that serve as important regulators of cancer-related processes. Abnormal expression of miR-577 has been found in several tumors. However, the expression pattern and biological function of miR-577 in progression of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) remain unknown. This study is aimed to determine its expression pattern and explore the function underlying the mechanism of miR-577 in PTC.Using quantitative RT-PCR, we detected miR-577 expression in PTC cell lines and primary tumor tissues. MTT assay and colony formation were performed to measure the viabilities of tumor cells. Transwell invasion and migration assays were used to test the invasion and migration of PTC cells transfected with miR-577 mimic. TargetScan, miRanda and PicTar were used to analyze whether sphingosine kinase 2 (SphK2) was a potential target gene. Next, the direct target gene of miR-577 was also identified by luciferase reporter assays and Western blot analysis.The results showed that miR-577 was significantly downregulated in PTC tissues and cell lines. The up-regulation of miR-577 inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of PTC cells in vitro. Furthermore, bioinformatics analysis indicated that SphK2 was a putative target of miR-577. A luciferase reporter assay further confirmed that SphK2 was a direct target of miR-577. The results of Western blot indicated that the expression level of miR-577 was negatively correlated with the expression level of SphK2 in PTC tissues. In addition, knockdown of SphK2 significantly suppressed PTC cells proliferation, migration and invasion.Our findings indicate that miR-577 is a potential tumor suppressor in PTC by targeting SphK2, and may be a potential therapeutic target in PTC.

Abstract

Screening genes in patients suffering clinically sporadic deafness, using DNA microarray, and evaluating the application value of the clinical detection.DNA extracted from patients' venous blood was amplified by PCR, and hybridization was carried out in a myriad class clean room. Nine mutation sites of four deaf genes commonly seen in Chinese people were tested.Among 24 patients, 7 cases with mutations were detected, with a positive rate of 29.17%. These include 4 cases with GJB2 gene mutation (16.67%), of which 1 case with 176 del 16 site heterozygous mutation; 1 with 235 del C site homozygous mutation; 2 with 299 del AT site heterozygous mutation; 1 with SLC26A4 gene IVS7-2AG site heterozygous mutation (4.17%), 2 with mitochondrion 12SrRNA gene1555AG site homogeneous mutation (8.33%). No GJB3 gene mutation was detected.Gene chip technology of hereditary hearing loss can detect related mutation sites of hearing loss rapidly and with high-throughput, which meets the demands of clinical deaf gene detection.

Abstract

Chinese physics / C 41(11), 113001 (2017). doi:10.1088/1674-1137/41/11/113001, To study the nature of the state $Y(2175)$, a dedicated data set of $e^+e^-$ collision data was collected at the center-of-mass energy of 2.125 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. By analyzing large-angle Bhabha scattering events, the integrated luminosity of this data set is determined to be $108.49\pm0.02\pm0.85$ pb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. In addition, the center-of-mass energy of the data set is determined with radiative dimuon events to be $2126.55\pm0.03\pm0.85$ MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic., Published by IOP Publ., Bristol [u.a.]

Abstract

The identification of the mutation status of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is important for the optimization of treatment in patients with pulmonary adenocarcinoma. The acquisition of adequate tissues for EGFR mutational analysis is sometimes not feasible, especially in advanced-stage patients. The aim of this study was to predict EGFR mutation status in patients with pulmonary adenocarcinoma based on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake and imaging features in positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), as well as on the serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level. We retrospectively reviewed 132 pulmonary adenocarcinoma patients who underwent EGFR mutation testing, pretreatment FDG PET/CT and serum CEA analysis. The associations between EGFR mutations and patient characteristics, maximal standard uptake value (SUVmax) of primary tumors, serum CEA level and CT imaging features were analyzed. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to quantify the predictive value of these factors. EGFR mutations were identified in 69 patients (52.2 %). Patients with SUVmax ≥6 (p = 0.002) and CEA level ≥5 (p = 0.013) were more likely to have EGFR mutations. The CT characteristics of larger tumors (≥3 cm) (p = 0.023) and tumors with a nonspiculated margin (p = 0.026) were also associated with EGFR mutations. Multivariate analysis showed that higher SUVmax and CEA level, never smoking and a nonspiculated tumor margin were the most significant predictors of EGFR mutation. The combined use of these four criteria yielded a higher area under the ROC curve (0.82), suggesting a good discrimination. The combined evaluation of FDG uptake, CEA level, smoking status and tumor margins may be helpful in predicting EGFR mutation status in patients with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, especially when the tumor sample is inadequate for genetic analysis or genetic testing is not available. Further large-scale prospective studies are needed to validate these results.

Abstract

Various types of artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been successfully applied in hydrological fields, but relatively scant on multistep-ahead flood inundation forecasting, which is very difficult to achieve, especially when dealing with forecasts without regular observed data. This study proposes a recurrent configuration of nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) network, called R-NARX, to forecast multistep-ahead inundation depths in an inundation area. The proposed R-NARX is constructed based on the recurrent neural network (RNN), which is commonly used for modeling nonlinear dynamical systems. The models were trained and tested based on a large number of inundation data generated by a well validated two-dimensional simulation model at thirteen inundation-prone sites in Yilan County, Taiwan. We demonstrate that the R-NARX model can effectively inhibit error growth and accumulation when being applied to online multistep-ahead inundation forecasts over a long lasting forecast period. For comparison, a feedforward time-delay and an online feedback configuration of NARX networks (T-NARX and O-NARX) were performed. The results show that (1) T-NARX networks cannot make online forecasts due to unavailable inputs in the constructed networks even though they provide the best performances for reference only; and (2) R-NARX networks consistently outperform O-NARX networks and can be adequately applied to online multistep-ahead forecasts of inundation depths in the study area during typhoon events.

Studies on the determination of multibrighteners in Ni plating bath, e.g. saccharin sodium, used as primary brightener, and 2-butyne-1,4-diol and its derivatives, e.g., 1,4-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-2-butyne, N,N′-diethyl-2-propyn-1-amine, used as secondary brighteners, by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD) and series wound evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) (HPLC-DAD-ELSD) method have been reported. The result showed that this novel method was fast and easy in its operation, with broad linear range, good reproducibility, low interference. Experimental laboratory investigations with a model of neurotrauma in Macaca rhesus.The present study evaluates whether intrathecal papaverine induces changes in spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) of injured spinal cord and prevents secondary injury.Institute of Spinal Cord Injury, Sun Yat-sen University, China.After laminectomy was performed and contusive spinal cord injuries were induced in adult female Macaca rhesus, three received intrathecal papaverine, and three received saline 0.9% for control. SCBF was registered by laser-Doppler recording technique continuously for 180 min after injection. Histological analyses and microvessel density (MVD) were used for evaluation of spinal cord injury, and the percentage of spared spinal cord area was calculated.Mean arterial blood pressure showed no significant change in both groups. In the papaverine group, SCBF recovered to 81.35+/-7.8% of baseline at 15 min, 75.24+/-6.3% at 30 min, 73.38+/-2.3% at 90 min and 72.57+/-4.1% at 180 min after the completion of infusion. SCBF was significantly higher than the control groups (P0.01). There was no occlusion of the arteries, but occluded veins were identified at the injured site. The MVD in the spinal cord of the control group was significantly lesser than the papaverine group (P0.01). Luxol Fast Blue staining showed that intrathecal papaverine reduced myelin loss in the lesion 2 weeks after injury (P0.05).Intrathecal administration of papaverine increased SCBF in non-human primates. It is likely that the effects of papaverine can reduce secondary injury in spinal cord injured Macaca rhesus.

Abstract

Two technical approaches for keyhole closure were conducted. Workpieces of aluminium alloy 2219 were welded using variable polarity vertical up plasma arc welding technology. Effects of welding process parameters on keyhole closure were analysed. Appropriate technical criteria for keyhole closure in the welding of aluminium alloys (3 or 6 mm in thickness) via the variable polarity vertical up plasma arc welding technique were obtained. Experimental simulation of girth welding (overlap welding) was conducted using the appropriate process parameters for the keyhole closure stage of plate butt welding, and the feasibility of circumferential welding was verified. Accordingly, girth welding of the external tank of a carrier rocket was achieved using the appropriate parameters for the keyhole closure technique. In addition, the metallurgical process and mechanical performance for the single pass and overlap welds were analysed and compared.

The Na+/I- symporter (NIS) is a membrane glycoprotein that facilitates the uptake of iodine into thyroid follicular cells. Recently, we and others have demonstrated the feasibility of imaging subcutaneous xenografts expressing exogenous NIS, suggesting that NIS may serve as an imaging reporter gene to monitor vector delivery and therapeutic gene expression. In this study, we established NIS-expressing pulmonary tumors in nude mice to investigate the minimal tumor size required for in vivo detection of pulmonary tumors by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with pinhole collimation. In order to define the anatomic location of NIS-expressing tumor nodules detectable by SPECT, we performed simultaneous, dual-isotope imaging. We injected 1 mCi 99mTc-MAA via tail vein to image pulmonary perfusion and injected 1 mCi Na125I intraperitoneally to image NIS-expressing tumors. Fused images showed that 99mTc-MAA perfusion defects correlated with NIS-mediated 125I uptake. Post-mortem analysis revealed that tumors 3 mm in diameter could be detected by SPECT with pinhole collimation. These studies demonstrate the feasibility of SPECT to detect pulmonary tumors expressing exogenous NIS in mice.

Abstract

The main characteristics of spatial and temporal variability of dryness and wetness during the last 530 years (1470–1999) are classified over five centuries. They have been investigated by using 100-site dryness/wetness index data that has recorded the historical weather conditions that affect agriculture and living conditions in eastern China. A set of principal modes of spatial variability and time coefficient series describing the dominant temporal variability are extracted by a diagnostic method, the rotated empirical orthogonal function (REOF) analysis. The long-term precipitation around Beijing, north China and the long-term runoffs in the middle Yangtze River are used to confirm the dry/wet variability in north China and the mid-low Yangtze River over the last two centuries.

Abstract

The thermal conductivities of Nd:YAG, M(Y,Gd)VO4 crystals were measured at 298 K. The value of Nd:GdVO4 crystal along direction was 11.4 W/mK, which was higher than that of YAG crystal measured to be 10.7 W/mK. The principal refractive indices of Nd:GdVO4 crystal in the temperature range from 20 °C to 170 °C were determined by auto-collimation method. Based on the measured values of refractive indices, the Sellmeier equation and expression of temperature dependence of refractive indices have been obtained. The measured results show that the birefringence Δn is 0.22007 at 20 °C and temperature coefficient of birefringence is 4.33 × 10−6/°C for 1.064 μm. These results prove that the GdVO4 crystal is a laser crystal with excellent thermal and birefringence properties. (© 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Abstract

Radioactive iodide uptake (RAIU) in thyroid follicular epithelial cells, mediated by the sodium iodide symporter (NIS), is the first rate-limiting step in iodide accumulation which provides a mechanism for effective radioiodide treatment for patients with thyroid cancer. We hypothesize that NIS gene transfer to non-thyroid tumor cells will enhance intracellular radioiodide accumulation and result in better tumor control. Here, we performed non-invasive tumor imaging and (131)I therapy studies using rats bearing intracerebral F98 gliomas that have been retrovirally transduced with human NIS. Our results show that: (1) NIS is expressed in the intracerebral F98/NIS gliomas; (2) F98/NIS gliomas can be imaged by (99m)TcO(4) (whose uptake is also mediated by NIS) and (123)I scintigraphy; (3) significant amounts of radioiodide were retained in the tumors at 24 h after (123)I injection; (4) RAIU and NIS expression in the thyroid gland can be reduced by feeding a thyroxine-supplemented diet; and (5) survival time was increased in rats bearing F98/hNIS tumors by (131)I treatment. These studies warrant further investigating tumor imaging and therapeutic strategies based on NIS gene transfer followed by radioiodide administration in a variety of human cancers.

Abstract

The ALMA North America Prototype Antenna was awarded to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) in 2011. SAO and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics (ASIAA), SAO's main partner for this project, are working jointly to relocate the antenna to Greenland to carry out millimeter and submillimeter VLBI observations. This paper presents the work carried out on upgrading the antenna to enable operation in the Arctic climate by the GLT Team to make this challenging project possible, with an emphasis on the unexpected telescope components that had to be either redesigned or changed. Five-years of inactivity, with the antenna laying idle in the desert of New Mexico, coupled with the extreme weather conditions of the selected site in Greenland have it necessary to significantly refurbish the antenna. We found that many components did need to be replaced, such as the antenna support cone, the azimuth bearing, the carbon fiber quadrupod, the hexapod, the HVAC, the tiltmeters, the antenna electronic enclosures housing servo and other drive components, and the cables. We selected Vertex, the original antenna manufacturer, for the main design work, which is in progress. The next coming months will see the major antenna components and subsystems shipped to a site of the US East Coast for test-fitting the major antenna components, which have been retrofitted. The following step will be to ship the components to Greenland to carry out VLBI and single dish observations. Abstract

Radioiodine-concentrating activity in thyroid tissues has allowed the use of radioiodine as a diagnostic and therapeutic agent for patients with thyroid disorders such as well-differentiated thyroid cancer. However, some extrathyroidal tissues also take up radioiodine, contributing to unwanted side effects of radioiodine therapy. Now that the molecule that mediates radioiodine uptake, the sodium iodide symporter (NIS), has been cloned and characterized, it may be possible to develop novel strategies to differentially modulate NIS expression and/or activity, enhancing it in target tissues and impeding it in others. In addition to restoring NIS expression/activity to ensure sufficient radioiodine uptake for the diagnosis and treatment of advanced thyroid cancers, we envision that it may be possible to selectively increase or confer NIS expression/activity in tumors of nonthyroidal tissues to facilitate the use of radioiodine in their diagnosis and treatment. We also consider the molecular basis of thyroid and nonthyroid disorders that may be complicated by NIS deregulation. Finally, we explore the use of NIS as an imaging reporter gene to monitor the expression profile of the transgene in transgenic mouse animal models and in patients undergoing gene therapy clinical trials.

In consideration of the hole-burning effects, based on the single longitudinal mode rate equation, the operating condition of continuous wave simultaneous dual wavelength laser (SDWL) in neodymium host crystals is studied. The relationship between the operating threshold of SDWL and thresholds of the single wavelength laser for both wavelengths is ascertained. The effect of multilongitudinal modes on the operation result has been discussed qualitatively. Taking Nd:YAlO3 crystal as an example, the experimental results agree well with our theoretical analysis.

Abstract

Steeped barley was germinated in laboratory scale solid-state fermentors at various oxygen partial pressures. Experiments were performed with sterile living barley and with barley colonized by the natural microflora. On line monitoring of CO 2 concentration in the off-gas of the reactors reflected the metabolic activity more accurately than heat production measurement. When colonized by micro-organisms, the respiratory activity of germinating barley increased with the oxygen level in the air. However, CO 2 profiles of sterile barley did not alter at different oxygen concentrations in the inlet air of the reactor. It is concluded that the germination phase of malting can be optimized by controlling the oxygen supply to the barley based on CO 2 production measurements and taking into account microbial aspects.

24. On-line multistep-ahead inundation depth forecasts by recurrent NARX networks

Abstract

Various types of artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been successfully applied in hydrological fields, but relatively scant on flood inundation forecast. This study proposes a recurrent configuration of nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) network, called R-NARX, to forecast multistep-ahead inundation depths in an inundation area. The proposed R-NARX is constructed based on the recurrent neural network (RNN), which is commonly used for modeling nonlinear dynamical systems. The models were trained and tested based on a large number of inundation data generated by a well validated two-dimensional simulation model at thirteen inundation-prone sites in Yilan County, Taiwan. We demonstrate that the R-NARX model can effectively inhibit error growth and accumulation when being applied to on-line multistep-ahead inundation forecasts over a long lasting forecast period. For comparison, a feedforward time-delay and an on-line feedback configuration of NARX networks (T-NARX and O-NARX) were performed. The results show that (1) T-NARX networks cannot make on-line forecasts due to unavailable inputs in the constructed networks even though they provide the best performances for reference only; and (2) R-NARX networks consistently outperform O-NARX networks and can be adequately applied to on-line multistep-ahead forecasts of inundation depths in the study area during typhoon events.

To quantify spinal cord perfusion by using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in a porcine model with acute spinal cord injury.Microcirculatory changes of acute spinal cord injury were shown by CEUS in a porcine model with spinal cord contusion at three selected time points, coupling with conventional ultrasound (US) and Color Doppler US (CDFI). Time-intensity curves and perfusion parameters were also obtained by autotracking contrast quantification (ACQ) software in the epicenter of contusion site, adjacent region and distant region, respectively. Neurologic and histologic examinations were used to confirm the severity of injury.Conventional US revealed the spinal cord was hypoechoic and homogeneous, whereas the dura mater, pia mater and cerebral aqueduct were hyperechoic. On CDFI intramedullary blood vessels were displayed as segmental and columnar. It was homogeneous on CEUS. After spinal cord contusion, the injured region on gray scale US was hyperechoic. CDFI demonstrated intramedullary blood vessels of adjacent region had increased and dilated during the observation period. On CEUS the epicenter of contusion site was hypoperfusion, whereas its adjacent region was hyperperfusion compared with the distant region. Quantitative analysis showed that peak intensity decreased in epicenters of contusion but increased in adjacent regions significantly at all time points (P0.05). Evaluation of neurological function for post-contusion demonstrated significantly deterioration in comparison before injury (P0.05).CEUS is a practical technique that provides overall views for evaluating microcirculatory pattern in spinal cord injury. Quantitative analysis shows the efficacy in assessment of perfusion changes after spinal cord injury.

A female patient aged 75 years presented with an incidental pulmonary nodule without FDG uptake when undergoing FDG PET/CT. Without obtaining histologic diagnosis, the follow-up FDG PET/CT 2 years later demonstrated intense FDG avidity within previously FDG-negative tumor. After surgery, the pathologic diagnosis is pulmonary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC). LELCs are unique because of histologic similarities with undifferentiated nasopharyngeal lymphoepithelioma and with a better prognosis as compared with other lung malignancies. However, the expression of FDG uptake in LELC has never been discussed. Herein, we describe a pulmonary LELC manifesting as a slowly growing tumor displaying conversion from FDG-negative to -positive avidity.

In China the practice of emergency medicine includes patient management in the prehospital, emergency department and intensive care settings. In recent years, emergency medicine has emerged as an independent medical specialty in its own right, and has built up its own professional pool of clinicians, academicians and researchers. There is, however, still much room for improvement compared with developed countries, especially in the areas of clinical and prehospital care, teaching and scientific research. In this paper the current state of emergency medicine education in China is presented and further avenues for improvement are explored.

A 61-year-old uremic male under hemodialysis underwent Tc-99m sestamibi scintigraphy due to suspicious secondary hyperparathyroidism. The images showed increased uptake in the right forearm, left shoulder, right knee and, to a lesser extent, in the left hip and the right thigh. Subsequent Tc-99m MDP bone scintigraphy and x-ray studies revealed intense extraosseous uptake and calcified masses in areas corresponding to those found in Tc-99m sestamibi scintigraphy, suggesting tumoral calcinoses. We demonstrate the rare case in which Tc-99m sestamibi was taken up by tumoral calcinoses.

Abstract

To resolve the discrepancies of the superconducting order parameter in quasi-two-dimensional NbSe2, comprehensive specific-heat measurements have been carried out. By analyzing both the zero-field and mixed-state data with magnetic fields perpendicular (H perpendicular to c) to and parallel (H parallel to c) to the c axis of the crystal and using the two-gap model, we conclude that (1) more than one energy scale of the order parameter is required for superconducting NbSe2 due to the thermodynamic consistency; (2) Delta(L)=1.26 meV and Delta(S)=0.73 meV are obtained; (3) N-S(0)/N(0)=11%-20%; (4) the observation of the kink in gamma(H) curve suggests that the two-gap scenario is more favorable than the anisotropic s-wave model to describe the gap structure of NbSe2; and (5) Delta(S) is more isotropic and has a three-dimensional-like feature and is located either on the Se or the bonding Nb Fermi sheets.

31. Synthesis of dermorphin-(1-4) derivatives catalyzed by proteases in organic solvents

Abstract

In order to extend the use of proteases to organic synthesis and seek the rules of enzymatic reactions in organic media, we focused on unnatural substrates for proteases to form amide bonds. In this paper, the study of unnatural substrates containing D-amino acid residue, which act as acyl acceptors as well as acyl donors for proteases in organic media, is reported. Dermorphin is a heptapeptide (H-Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-Gly-Tyr-Pro-Ser-NH(2)) with potent analgesic activity. The N-terminal tetrapeptide is the minimum sequence that retains dermorphin activity, and is selected as the model compound in our study. Two dermorphin-(1-4) derivatives, Boc-Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-Gly-N(2)H(2)Ph and Boc-Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-Gly-NH(2), which contained a d-amino acid residue, were synthesized by proteases in organic media for the first time. The synthesis of these two dermorphin-(1-4) derivatives could be catalyzed by subtilisin with Boc-Tyr-D-Ala-OCH(2)CF(3) as an acyl donor substrate in AcOEt. The synthesis of dermorphin-(1-2) derivative Boc-Tyr-D-Ala-N(2)H(2)Ph was catalyzed by alpha-chymotrypsin in different organic solvents and D-Ala-N(2)H(2)Ph was used as an acyl acceptor substrate. Factors influencing the above enzymatic reactions were systematically studied.

Abstract

Abstract Using a sample of $$1.31\times 10^{9} ~J/\psi $$ 1.31×109J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a study of $$J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma K{\bar{K}}\eta '$$ J/ψ→γKK¯η′ . X(2370) is observed in the $$K{\bar{K}}\eta '$$ KK¯η′ invariant-mass distribution with a statistical significance of $$8.3\sigma $$ 8.3σ . Its resonance parameters are measured to be $$M=2341.6\pm 6.5 \, \text {(stat.)} \pm 5.7 \, \text {(syst.)}~ \hbox {MeV}/c^{2}$$ M=2341.6±6.5(stat.)±5.7(syst.)MeV/c2 and $$\Gamma = 117\pm 10 \, \text {(stat.)}\pm 8 \, \text {(syst.)}~\hbox {MeV}$$ Γ=117±10(stat.)±8(syst.)MeV . The product branching fractions for $$J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma X(2370),X(2370)\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}\eta '$$ J/ψ→γX(2370),X(2370)→K+K-η′ and $$J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma X(2370),X(2370)\rightarrow K_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}\eta '$$ J/ψ→γX(2370),X(2370)→KS0KS0η′ are determined to be $$(1.79\pm 0.23\, \text {(stat.)}\pm 0.65\,\text {(syst.)})\times 10^{-5}$$ (1.79±0.23(stat.)±0.65(syst.))×10-5 and $$(1.18\pm 0.32\, \text {(stat.)}\pm 0.39\, \text {(syst.)})\times 10^{-5}$$ (1.18±0.32(stat.)±0.39(syst.))×10-5 , respectively. No evident signal for X(2120) is observed in the $$K{\bar{K}}\eta '$$ KK¯η′ invariant-mass distribution. The upper limits for the product branching fractions of $${\mathcal {B}}(J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma X(2120)\rightarrow \gamma K^{+} K^{-} \eta ')$$ B(J/ψ→γX(2120)→γK+K-η′) and $${\mathcal {B}}(J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma X(2120)\rightarrow \gamma K_{S}^{0} K_{S}^{0} \eta ')$$ B(J/ψ→γX(2120)→γKS0KS0η′) are determined to be $$1.49\times 10^{-5}$$ 1.49×10-5 and $$6.38\times 10^{-6}$$ 6.38×10-6 at the 90% confidence level, respectively.

Abstract

Radiative decays of the radially excited charmonium resonance, \psi(2S), into \pi\pi, K Kbar and \eta\eta final states have been measured in a sample of 3.96 * 10^6 \psi(2S) events collected by the BES collaboration. The branching ratios B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma f_{2}(1270)) = (2.27 +- 0.26 +- 0.39) * 10^{-4} and B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma f_0(1710)) * B(f_0(1710) -> K^+ K^-) = (5.59 +- 1.12 +- 0.93) * 10^{-5} are obtained. When compared to the corresponding radiative J/\psi decays, the observed \psi(2S) radiative decay rates into \gamma f_2(1270) and \gamma f_0(1710) are consistent with the 15% rule., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The preparation, X-ray crystal structure, and magnetic properties of alternating 1,1- and 1,3-azido-bridged copper(II) complex [Cu(4,4'-dmbpy)(N3)2]n (1, 4,4'-dmbpy = 4,4'-dimethylbipyridine) have been reported. It crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P1, a = 7.9903(1) A, b = 9.3545(9) A, c = 10.754(2) A, alpha = 113.485(1) degrees, beta = 101.399(1) degrees, gamma = 101.897(1) degrees, Z = 2. The magnetic properties of 1 have been investigated in the temperature range 1.5-300 K. Alternating antiferromagnetic (-J = 191.0 cm(-1)) interaction through a 1,3-N3- bridge and ferromagnetic (J = 297.1 cm(-1)) interaction through a 1,1-N3- bridge are obtained for 1 by analyzing the magnetic susceptibility data with the Hamiltonian H = -Jsigma(S2iS2i-1--alphaS2iS2i+1). It's derivatives ([Mn(4,4'-dmbpy)(N3)2]n (2), [Ni(4,4'-dmbpy)(N3)2]n (3), and [Fe(4,4'-dmbpy)(N3)2]n (4) and the heterometallic derivatives [NiMn(4,4'-dmbpy)2(N3)4]n (5) and [CuMn(4,4'-dmbpy)2(N3)4]n (6) have also been synthesized and characterized by electronic and IR spectra. The X-ray powder diffraction and the magnetic properties of 6 have also been discussed.

Abstract

In a sample of 7.8 million J/{psi} decays collected in the Beijing Spectrometer, the process J/{psi}{yields}{gamma}{eta}{sub c} is observed for five different {eta}{sub c} decay channels: K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, K{sup {+-}}K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup {+-}} (with K{sub S}{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}), {phi}{phi} (with {phi}{yields}K{sup +}K{sup -}) and K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}. From these signals, we determine the mass of {eta}{sub c} to be 2976.6{+-}2.9{+-}1.3 MeV. Combining this result with a previously reported result from a similar study using {psi}(2S){yields}{gamma}{eta}{sub c} detected in the same spectrometer gives m{sub {eta}{sub c}}=2976.3{+-}2.3{+-}1.2 MeV. For the combined samples, we obtain {gamma}{sub {eta}{sub c}}=11.0{+-}8.1{+-}4.1 MeV. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

A sample of 3.95M $\psi(2S)$ decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for $\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}$, $\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$, $\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0$, $\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+$, $\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}$, $\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385)$, $\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530)$, and $\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+$. Abstract

In 1984-1990 longitudinal or sectional serological surveillance on filariasis by ELISA with Brugia malayi adult antigen was carried out in 6 villages, Yuhang County, Zhejiang Province, where malayan filariasis had been under control. During that period the microfilaraemia rate of inhabitants had been declining continuously till nil, the positive rate and mean optical density (OD) value in ELISA for positive inhabitants concurrently declined year by year, especially for children under age of 10. By the 5th year after control both the positive rate and mean OD value were close to those of healthy persons living in nonendemic areas of filariasis, no positivity was found in children. In the meantime, ELISA was used to detect serum antibodies in members of a family who were infected with bancroftian filariasis and inhabitants living around them in 1990. Positive rate of ELISA was higher in these inhabitants (8.33%) than in healthy persons (2.53%), and positive ones were detected from children under age of 10. The results suggest that the detection of antifilarial antibody by using ELISA is an effective method for the surveillance of filariasis.

Abstract

A new method to obtain 413.7‐nm violet coherent radiation by second‐order sum‐frequency mixing of the outputs (1341.4 and 1079.5 nm) of a double‐wavelength Nd:YALO3 (Nd:YAP) laser in two LiIO3 crystals is reported. First, a 598.1‐nm orange coherent radiation is obtained by sum‐frequency mixing (SFM) of 1341.4‐ and 1079.5‐nm radiations in a LiIO3 crystal, and then the 598.1‐ and 1341.4‐nm radiations are mixed again in a second LiIO3 crystal to get 413.7‐nm radiation. The phase‐matching angles are obtained for both SFM processes. The experimental results agree well with calculated results.

Abstract

The possibility of simultaneous multiple wavelength lasing in various neodymium host crystals such as Nd:YAG, Nd:YLF, Nd:BEL, and Nd:YAP has been analyzed by the ‘‘oscillation condition.’’ It is shown that this kind of laser can be realized in all the described crystals in pulsed state, but only achieved in the Nd:YAP crystal in continuous‐wave state. On the basis of the analyzed results, we have achieved cw simultaneous multiple wavelength lasing in Nd:YAP crystal for the first time at both 1.0795 and 1.3414 μm.

Abstract

In this study, the tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) functionalized, core-shell structured, nano magnetic polymer adsorbents (TEPA-NMPs) have been used for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution in the presence of Cu(II), or Ni(II), or Zn(II) ions. Batch adsorption studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of the co-existing ions on its adsorption properties to Cr(VI). The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of Cr(VI) was found to be 263 mg.g-1, 333 mg.g-1, 354 mg.g-1 at temperature of 35°C and pH value at 2.0, when 50 mg.L-1 Cu(II), or Ni(II), or Zn(II) was added to Cr(VI) solutions, which was ∼29%, ∼10%, and 4.4% decreased than that free of these ions (qm = 370.4 mg.g-1). The adsorption mechanism of adsorbents to Cr(VI) coexisted with Cu(II) was deeply studied via FTIR. Presumed mechanism of the competition of Cu(II), or Ni (II), or Zn(II) with Cr(VI) was proposed. 42. Temporal and spatial variability of dryness/wetness in China during the last 530 years.

Abstract

Summary The main characteristics of spatial and temporal variability of dryness and wetness during the last 530 years (1470?1999) are classified over five centuries. They have been investigated by using 100-site dryness/wetness index data that has recorded the historical weather conditions that affect agriculture and living conditions in eastern China. A set of principal modes of spatial variability and time coefficient series describing the dominant temporal variability are extracted by a diagnostic method, the rotated empirical orthogonal function (REOF) analysis. The long-term precipitation around Beijing, north China and the long-term runoffs in the middle Yangtze River are used to confirm the dry/wet variability in north China and the mid-low Yangtze River over the last two centuries. When considering the data from the last 530 years as a whole, the first two modes of dryness/wetness variability are found in the mid to low sections of two major valleys in eastern China, the Yellow and Yangtze River valleys. These valleys experienced the largest dryness/wetness variability in the history of eastern China. The third and fourth modes are located in northwest and northeast China. The fifth and sixth modes are situated in south and southwest China. However, over the last 500 years the strength and location of principal modes have experienced significant changes. During the 20th century, the first mode is found in the lower Yangtze River valley, the second mode in south China while the third mode is located in the mid-low Yellow River valley. During the 19 th century, the first three modes are situated in the mid-low Yellow River, the mid-low Yangtze River and south China, respectively. The first two modes in the 18 th century are located in the mid-low Yellow River and the mid-low Yangtze River valleys. The largest change of all modes occurred in the 17 th century with the first mode in northeast China, the second mode in northwest China, and the third mode in the mid-low Yangtze River valley. During the 16 th century, the first two modes are found in the mid-low Yangtze River and the mid-low Yellow River valleys. In each of the last five centuries, some special dryness/wetness processes are characterized in the mid-low Yangtze River and the mid-low Yellow River (north China). During the 20 th century, continuous and severe wetness is experienced in the mid-low Yangtze River in the last two decades. A two-decade wetness period in north China was followed by a severe dry period in the late 19 th century. Inter-annual variability, decade and two-decade oscillations of dryness/wetness are experienced in the series of different modes from one century to another. Abstract

This paper reports the clinical research conducted on the new synthetic protestogen 3-cyclopentyl propionate of megestrol acetate (Progestin No. 1) in the last 10 years. It has been synthesized in China as a new antifertility agent for women. It was given orally once a month in combination with small amounts of quinestrol (100 mg Progestin No. 1 and 0.5 mg quinestrol) administered on day 10 of the menstrual cycle before ovulation, and in another group, a 1/2 dose was repeated on day 16 for comparison. The clinical results of the latter group were better. In 1213 healthy volunteer women, 9651 (woman-months) treatment cycles were observed. The efficacy was 99.1% (calculated by woman-years) with very few side effects. During treatment, the duration and amount of menstruation were normal. In the recent follow-up, no abnormal findings were revealed through laboratory and physical examinations. Soon after drug discontinuation, menstruation recovered normally, and treatment did not interfere with another pregnancy. In light of clinical and laboratory studies, the contraceptive mechanism was discussed, and it was suggested that the antifertility effect was multiple. The drug has definite antiovulation and antiimplantation effects. A certain relationship exists between antiimplantation effectiveness and time of administration. It is concluded that progestogen 3-cyclopentyl propionate of megestrol acetate (Progestin No. 1) is a new effective antifertility agent. (author's modified)

Abstract

Various types of artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been successfully applied in hydrological fields, but relatively scant on multistep-ahead flood inundation forecasting, which is very difficult to achieve, especially when dealing with forecasts without regular observed data. This study proposes a recurrent configuration of nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) network, called R-NARX, to forecast multistep-ahead inundation depths in an inundation area. The proposed R-NARX is constructed based on the recurrent neural network (RNN), which is commonly used for modeling nonlinear dynamical systems. The models were trained and tested based on a large number of inundation data generated by a well validated two-dimensional simulation model at thirteen inundation-prone sites in Yilan County, Taiwan. We demonstrate that the R-NARX model can effectively inhibit error growth and accumulation when being applied to online multistep-ahead inundation forecasts over a long lasting forecast period. For comparison, a feedforward time-delay and an online feedback configuration of NARX networks (T-NARX and O-NARX) were performed. The results show that (1) T-NARX networks cannot make online forecasts due to unavailable inputs in the constructed networks even though they provide the best performances for reference only; and (2) R-NARX networks consistently outperform O-NARX networks and can be adequately applied to online multistep-ahead forecasts of inundation depths in the study area during typhoon events.

Abstract

WOS: 000349437800001, Using 482 pb(-1) of data taken at root s = 4.009 GeV, we measure the branching fractions of the decays of D*(0) into D-0 pi(0) and D-0 gamma to be B(D*(0) -> D-0 pi(0)) = (65.5 +/- 0.8 +/- 0.5)% and B(D*(0) -> D0 gamma) = (34.5 +/- 0.8 +/- 0.5)%, respectively, by assuming that the D*(0) decays only into these two modes. The ratio of the two branching fractions is B(D*(0) -> D-0 pi(0))/B(D*(0) -> D-0 gamma) = 1.90 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.05, which is independent of the assumption made above. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. Abstract

WOS: 000348360900003, Using a sample of 2.25 x 10(8) J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the J/psi semileptonic weak decay J/psi -> D-s(-) e(+)nu(e) +c.c. with a much higher sensitivity than previous searches. We also perform the first search for J/psi -> D-s(*-) e(+) nu(e) + c.c. No significant excess of a signal above background is observed in either channel. At the 90% confidence level, the upper limits are determined to be B(J/psi -> D-s(-) e(+) nu(e) + c.c.) < 1.3 x 10(-6) and B(J/psi -> D-s*(-) e(+) nu(e) + c.c.) < 1.8 x 10(-6), respectively.
