We report an Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) study of the fully deuterated molecular compound K6[V15As6O42].9(D2O) (V15). Due to geometrical frustration, the essential physics at low temperatures of the V15 cluster containing 15 coupled V4+ (S=1/2) is determined by three weakly coupled spin-1/2 on a triangle. The INS spectra at low-energy allow us to directly determine the effective exchange coupling J0 = 0.211 meV within the triangle and the gap 2 \Delta = 0.035(2)meV between the two spin-1/2 doublets of the ground state. Results are discussed in terms of deviations from trigonal symmetry and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. to appear in Europhysics Letters

Metal (4f)-ligand (Cl 3p) bonding in LnCl63- (Ln = Ce to Yb) complexes has been studied on the basis of 4f->4f and Cl,3p->4f charge-transfer spectra and on the analysis of these spectra within the valence bond configuration interaction model to show that mixing of Cl 3p into the Ln 4f ligand field orbitals does not exceed 1%. Contrary to this, Kohn-Sham formalism of density functional theory using currently available approximations to the exchange-correlation functional tends to strongly overestimate 4f-3p covalency, yielding, for YbCl63-, a much larger mixing of Cl 3p->4f charge transfer into the f13 ionic ground-state wave function. Thus, ligand field density functional theory, which was recently developed and applied with success to complexes of 3d metals in our group, yields anomalously large ligand field splittings for Ln, the discrepancy with experiment increasing from left to the right of the Ln 4f series. It is shown that eliminating artificial ligand-to-metal charge transfer in Kohn-Sham calculations by a procedure described in this work leads to energies of 4f-4f transitions in good agreement with experiment. We recall an earlier concept of Ballhausen and Dahl which describes ligand field in terms of a pseudopotential and give a thorough analysis of the contributions to the ligand field from electrostatics (crystal field) and exchange (Pauli) repulsion. The close relation of the present results with those obtained using the first-principles based and electron density dependent effective embedding potential is pointed out along with implications for applications to other systems.

The ground-state properties of a Co3II moiety encapsulated in a polyoxometalate anion were investigated by combining measurements of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and low-temperature magnetization with a detailed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on a fully deuterated polycrystalline sample of Na12[Co3W(D2O)2(ZnW9O34)2].40D2O (Co3). The ferromagnetic Co3O14 cluster core consists of three octahedrally oxo-coordinated CoII ions. According to the single-ion anisotropy and spin-orbit coupling of the octahedral CoII ions, the appropriate exchange Hamiltonian to describe the ground-state properties of the Co3 spin cluster is anisotropic and is expressed as H = -2 sigma a = x,y,z (Ja12 S1a S2a + Ja23 S2a S3a), where Ja are the components of the exchange interactions between the CoII ions. To reproduce the INS data, different orientations of the two anisotropic J tensors must be considered, and the following conditions had to be introduced: Jx12 = Jy23, Jy12 = Jx23, Jz12 = Jz23. This result was correlated with the molecular symmetry of the complex. The following set of parameters was obtained: Jx12 = Jy23 = 1.37, Jy12 = Jx23 = 0.218, and Jz12 = Jz23 = 1.24 meV. This set also reproduces in a satisfactory manner the specific heat, susceptibility, and magnetization properties of Co3.

We report an inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study under a magnetic field on the frustrated molecular spin cluster $V_{15}$. Several field-dependent transitions are observed and provide a comprehensive understanding of the low-energy quantum spin states. The energy gap $2 \Delta_{0}\approx 27(3)\mu$eV between the two lowest $S=1/2$ Kramers doublets is unambiguously attributed to a symmetry lowering of the cluster. The INS data are mapped onto an S=1/2 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg triangle with scalene distortion.
