1. The co-creation, initial piloting, and protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial of a coach-led positive body image intervention for girls in sport

Abstract

Abstract Background Globally, girls disengage from sports at an earlier age and higher rate than boys. This is, in part, due to the unique body image challenges that girls face, relative to their male peers. Existing intervention efforts that aim to reduce girls’ negative body image and movement experiences have proven marginally effective, if not ineffective. This paper outlines the co-creation, initial piloting and protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial of Body Confident Athletes (BCA); an in-person, coach-led intervention that aims to foster positive body image and sports enjoyment among girls. Methods Following co-creation and an initial pilot, a two-armed cluster randomised controlled trial will assess the immediate (post-intervention) and short-term (1-month and 3-month follow-up) impact of BCA on girls’ (N = 1,036; 11–17 years old) body image, sports enjoyment, and affect. Sport organisations will be randomly allocated (1:1) into either an intervention or waitlist control condition. Girls and coaches in the intervention condition will complete three 60-minute sessions over three consecutive weeks. The primary outcome will be the immediate change in girls’ body esteem, with secondary outcomes assessing the immediate and short-term changes in girls’ body appreciation, self-objectification, attuned self-care, sports enjoyment, and affect. Discussion This research is the first to utilise an international multi-stakeholder partnership to co-create and evaluate an intervention that addresses the intersection of girls’ body image and sport experiences. The theoretical and methodological considerations of this research have led to a feasible intervention and trial protocol, and if proven effective, BCA may assist in reducing the global gender disparity in sports participation. Introdução – A estimativa da função renal relativa (FRR) através de cintigrafia renal (CR) com ácido dimercaptossuccínico marcado com tecnécio-99 metastável (99mTc-DMSA) pode ser influenciada pela profundidade renal (PR), atendendo ao efeito de atenuação por parte dos tecidos moles que envolvem os rins. Dado que raramente é conhecida esta mesma PR, diferentes métodos de correção de atenuação (CA) foram desenvolvidos, nomeadamente os que utilizam fórmulas empíricas, como os de Raynaud, de Taylor ou de Tonnesen, ou recorrendo à aplicação direta da média geométrica (MG). Objetivos – Identificar a influência dos diferentes métodos de CA na quantificação da função renal relativa através da CR com 99mTc-DMSA e avaliar a respetiva variabilidade dos resultados de PR. Metodologia – Trinta e um pacientes com indicação para realização de CR com 99mTc-DMSA foram submetidos ao mesmo protocolo de aquisição. O processamento foi efetuado por dois operadores independentes, três vezes por exame, variando para o mesmo processamento o método de determinação da FRR: Raynaud, Taylor, Tonnesen, MG ou sem correção de atenuação (SCA). Aplicou-se o teste de Friedman para o estudo da influência dos diferentes métodos de CA e a correlação de Pearson para a associação e significância dos valores de PR com as variáveis idade, peso e altura. Resultados – Da aplicação do teste de Friedman verificaram-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os vários métodos (p=0,000), excetuando as comparações SCA/Raynaud, Tonnesen/MG e Taylor/MG (p=1,000) para ambos os rins. A correlação de Pearson demonstra que a variável peso apresenta uma correlação forte positiva com todos os métodos de cálculo da PR. Conclusões – O método de Taylor, entre os três métodos de cálculo de PR, é o que apresenta valores de FRR mais próximos da MG. A escolha do método de CA influencia significativamente os parâmetros quantitativos de FRR.

Abstract

The first record of Ophichthus rufus (Rafinesque, 1810) in Portuguese continental waters is reported. In February 2013 two specimens were caught by a commercial bottom trawler on the southwestern Portuguese coast and in August 2019 another specimen was caught at the same location. Analyses of diagnostic morphological characters and morphometric characteristics confirmed the specimens as Ophichthus rufus. The distribution of this species has been described in the literature as endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, however other references describe the presence of O. rufus in Principe Island, Morocco, and Gulf of Cádiz. The new finding described herewith represents the first record of O. rufus for the western Iberian coast and also constitutes the northernmost record of the species.

4. Characterization of the high-affinity phosphate transporter PHT1;4 gene promoter of Arabidopsis thaliana in transgenic wheat

Abstract

The root specificity and phosphate (Pi) deficiency responsiveness of high-affinity phosphate transporter (PHT1) genes point to their promoters as a sustainable system to drive Pi acquisition-related transgenes in plants. In this study, a 3-kb promoter of the AtPHT1;4 gene from Arabidopsis thaliana fused to the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene was biolistically introduced into wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and functionally characterized in transgenic plants grown in hydroponics and in pots with soil under various Pi supply rates. From among 27 T1 progeny derived from 250 T0, four transgenic lines reached T3, with two of them showing detectable GUS activity in the roots of T4 plants. An unusually high number of transgene insertions characterized these transgenic lines, along with an irregular pattern of histochemical GUS staining and weak GUS activity. GUS expression driven by AtPHT1;4 was consistently higher under most assay conditions, as it was unaffected by 0 to 0.5 mM Pi in hydroponically grown plants, as well as by 16 to 20 mg(P) kg-1(soil) in potted plants. Raising the soil P up to or above 40 mg kg-1 significantly down-regulated the quantity of GUS transcripts. These results show that the responsiveness of the AtPHT1;4 promoter to Pi availability in transgenic wheat was restricted to soil-grown plants, which highlighted the relevance of the substrate and Pi supply rates in assessing molecular responses to Pi deficiency.

Introduction – The estimate of relative renal function (RRF) through scintigraphy with dimercaptosuccinic acid labelled with Technetium-99 metastable (99mTc-DMSA) may be influenced by kidney depth (KD), due to attenuation by soft tissue surrounding the kidneys. Considering that rarely this KD is known, several methods for attenuation correction (AC) have been developed, namely those using empirical formulae, such as Raynaud, Taylor or Tonnesen methods, or by direct calculation of the geometric mean (GM). Objectives – To identify the influence of different AC methods on RRF estimateby scintigraphy with 99mTc-DMSA and to evaluate the respective KD variability. Methods: Thirty-one patients were referred for 99mTc-DMSA scintigraphy and underwent the same acquisition protocol. Processing was performed by 2 independent operators, three times per exam, changing for the same processing the methods for the FRR determination: Raynaud’s method, Taylor’s method, Tonnesen´s method, GM and without AC (WAC). Friedman’s test was used to identify the influence of the different AC methods on RRF estimate and Pearson’s correlation test was used to evaluate the association and significance between KD and the variables age, weight and height. Results – Friedman’s test indicated that there were significant differences between methods (p=0.000), except for WAC/Raynaud, Tonnesen/GM and Taylor/GM (p=1.000) comparisons, for both kidneys. Pearson’s test showed a strong positive correlation between weight and the three methods of KD estimation. Conclusions – Taylor’s method, regarding the three methods of KD calculation, is the closest to GM. The choice of the attenuation correction method influences significantly the quantitative parameters of FRR.

Con la creciente demanda de aceros cada vez más bajos en fósforo (P), junto con el constante aumento en el contenido de este elemento en el mineral utilizado para producir arrabio, es necesario un proceso en constante evolución para la eliminación de fósforo del acero en los convertidores BOF. Este artículo tiene como objetivo mostrar el desarrollo para reducir el nivel de fósforo en el acero desoxidado con aluminio y silicio producido en los convertidores de Arcelor Mittal Tubarão (AMT), empresa ubicada en el municipio de Serra, Brasil. Este complejo produce 5 millones de toneladas pero tiene una capacidad instalada de 7,5 millones. El análisis de las variables del proceso tales como adición de fundentes, temperatura y el patrón de soplado, se basó en los modelos clásicos de la partición de fósforo. Los resultados presentados comparan los valores de fósforo obtenidos en el acero líquido antes y después de los cambios realizados, y analiza el desgaste de refractarios en los convertidores.

Abstract

IntroductionThe AAMC prioritizes promoting a diverse and culturally competent workforce which is thought to have a positive impact on the health of people living in the US. There is a lack of diversity in the current landscape of academic medicine and strategies are needed to effect change. This module introduced undergraduate and graduate medical trainees to leadership skills and opportunities in curriculum innovation and reform by learning about and interacting with the office of medical education (OME) at their institutions.MethodsWe implemented a workshop using small-group case discussions and didactics to help medical students and residents learn how to: (1) describe the structure and functions of an OME, (2) describe leadership competencies associated with various roles within the OME, and (3) identify opportunities for trainees to engage with the OME on curricular innovation and reform, especially advancing diversity and inclusion.ResultsAcross three sites, 45 learners completed partial or full workshop evaluations. Of learners, 22 (49%) were not knowledgeable and 13 (29%) were somewhat knowledgeable in identifying leadership opportunities for trainees to become engaged through the OME. There was a statistically significant increase in confidence after the workshop in "discussing an interdisciplinary approach to the creation of a medical education innovation," and, "assessing the need for curricula change." Over 90% of attendees agreed learning objectives were met.DiscussionThis workshop succeeded in promoting awareness of the structure and function of OMEs and confidence in seeking opportunities to become engaged in medical education, especially in advancing diversity and inclusion.

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by motor and non-motor signs, which are accompanied by progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Although the exact causes are unknown, evidence links this neuronal loss with neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. Repeated treatment with a low dose of reserpine—inhibitor of VMAT2—has been proposed as a progressive pharmacological model of PD. The aim of this study was to investigate whether this model replicates the neuroinflammation characteristic of this disease. Six-month-old Wistar rats received repeated subcutaneous injections of reserpine (0.1 mg/kg) or vehicle on alternate days. Animals were euthanized after 5, 10, or 15 injections, or 20 days after the 15th injection. Catalepsy tests (motor assessment) were conducted across treatment. Brains were collected at the end of each treatment period for immunohistochemical and RT-PCR analyzes. Reserpine induced a significant progressive increase in catalepsy duration. We also found decreased immunostaining for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and increased GFAP + cells in the SNpc and dorsal striatum after 10 and 15 reserpine injections. Phenotyping microglial M1 and M2 markers showed increased number of CD11b + cells and percentage of CD11b + /iNOS + cells in reserpine-treated animals after 15 injections, which is compatible with tissue damage and production of cytotoxic factors. In addition, increased CD11b + /ArgI + cells were found 20 days after the last reserpine injection, together with an increment in IL-10 gene expression in the dorsal striatum, which is indicative of tissue repair or regeneration. Reserpine also induced increases in striatal interleukin TNF-alpha mRNA levels in early stages. In view of these results, we conclude that reserpine-induced progressive parkinsonism model leads to neuroinflammation in regions involved in the pathophysiology of PD, which is reversed 20 days after the last injection. These findings reveal that withdrawal period, together with the shift of microglial phenotypes from the pro-inflammatory to the anti-inflammatory stage, may be important for the study of the mechanisms involved in reversing this condition, with potential clinical applicability.

Abstract

We evaluate the exposure during nadir observations with JEM-EUSO, the Extreme Universe Space Observatory, on-board the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station. Designed as a mission to explore the extreme energy Universe from space, JEM-EUSO will monitor the Earth's nighttime atmosphere to record the ultraviolet light from tracks generated by extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In the present work, we discuss the particularities of space-based observation and we compute the annual exposure in nadir observation. The results are based on studies of the expected trigger aperture and observational duty cycle, as well as, on the investigations of the effects of clouds and different types of background light. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is exploring the potential of the radio detection technique to study extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) addresses both technological and scientific aspects of the radio technique. A first phase of AERA has been operating since September 2010 with detector stations observing radio signals at frequencies between 30 and 80 MHz. In this paper we present comparative studies to identify and optimize the antenna design for the final configuration of AERA consisting of 160 individual radio detector stations. The transient nature of the air shower signal requires a detailed description of the antenna sensor. As the ultra-wideband reception of pulses is not widely discussed in antenna literature, we review the relevant antenna characteristics and enhance theoretical considerations towards the impulse response of antennas including polarization effects and multiple signal reflections. On the basis of the vector effective length we study the transient response characteristics of three candidate antennas in the time domain. Observing the variation of the continuous galactic background intensity we rank the antennas with respect to the noise level added to the galactic signal., Comment: Accepted for publication in JINST, 50 pages, 25 figures

Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a facility built to detect air showers produced by cosmic rays above 10^17 eV. During clear nights with a low illuminated moon fraction, the UV fluorescence light produced by air showers is recorded by optical telescopes at the Observatory. To correct the observations for variations in atmospheric conditions, atmospheric monitoring is performed at regular intervals ranging from several minutes (for cloud identification) to several hours (for aerosol conditions) to several days (for vertical profiles of temperature, pressure, and humidity). In 2009, the monitoring program was upgraded to allow for additional targeted measurements of atmospheric conditions shortly after the detection of air showers of special interest, e.g., showers produced by very high-energy cosmic rays or showers with atypical longitudinal profiles. The former events are of particular importance for the determination of the energy scale of the Observatory, and the latter are characteristic of unusual air shower physics or exotic primary particle types. The purpose of targeted (or "rapid") monitoring is to improve the resolution of the atmospheric measurements for such events. In this paper, we report on the implementation of the rapid monitoring program and its current status. The rapid monitoring data have been analyzed and applied to the reconstruction of air showers of high interest, and indicate that the air fluorescence measurements affected by clouds and aerosols are effectively corrected using measurements from the regular atmospheric monitoring program. We find that the rapid monitoring program has potential for supporting dedicated physics analyses beyond the standard event reconstruction.

Abstract

The Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to neutrinos of all flavours above 0.1 EeV. These interact through charged and neutral currents in the atmosphere giving rise to extensive air showers. When interacting deeply in the atmosphere at nearly horizontal incidence, neutrinos can be distinguished from regular hadronic cosmic rays by the broad time structure of their shower signals in the water-Cherenkov detectors. In this paper we present for the first time an analysis based on down-going neutrinos. We describe the search procedure, the possible sources of background, the method to compute the exposure and the associated systematic uncertainties. No candidate neutrinos have been found in data collected from 1 January 2004 to 31 May 2010. Assuming an E^-2 differential energy spectrum the limit on the single flavour neutrino is (E^2 * dN/dE) < 1.74x10^-7 GeV cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 at 90% C.L. in the energy range 1x10^17 eV < E < 1x10^20 eV., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, published 30 December 2011

Abstract

Atmospheric conditions at the site of a cosmic ray observatory must be known for reconstructing observed extensive air showers. The Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) is a global atmospheric model predicated on meteorological measurements and numerical weather predictions. GDAS provides altitude-dependent profiles of the main state variables of the atmosphere like temperature, pressure, and humidity. The original data and their application to the air shower reconstruction of the Pierre Auger Observatory are described. By comparisons with radiosonde and weather station measurements obtained on-site in Malarg\"ue and averaged monthly models, the utility of the GDAS data is shown.

Abstract

We present a comprehensive study of the influence of the geomagnetic field on the energy estimation of extensive air showers with a zenith angle smaller than $60^\circ$, detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory. The geomagnetic field induces an azimuthal modulation of the estimated energy of cosmic rays up to the ~2% level at large zenith angles. We present a method to account for this modulation of the reconstructed energy. We analyse the effect of the modulation on large scale anisotropy searches in the arrival direction distributions of cosmic rays. At a given energy, the geomagnetic effect is shown to induce a pseudo-dipolar pattern at the percent level in the declination distribution that needs to be accounted for., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

In this paper we introduce the concept of Lateral Trigger Probability (LTP) function, i.e., the probability for an extensive air shower (EAS) to trigger an individual detector of a ground based array as a function of distance to the shower axis, taking into account energy, mass and direction of the primary cosmic ray. We apply this concept to the surface array of the Pierre Auger Observatory consisting of a 1.5 km spaced grid of about 1600 water Cherenkov stations. Using Monte Carlo simulations of ultra-high energy showers the LTP functions are derived for energies in the range between 10^{17} and 10^{19} eV and zenith angles up to 65 degs. A parametrization combining a step function with an exponential is found to reproduce them very well in the considered range of energies and zenith angles. The LTP functions can also be obtained from data using events simultaneously observed by the fluorescence and the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory (hybrid events). We validate the Monte-Carlo results showing how LTP functions from data are in good agreement with simulations., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures. Published in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

We present the results of an analysis of data recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory in which we search for groups of directionally-aligned events (or `multiplets') which exhibit a correlation between arrival direction and the inverse of the energy. These signatures are expected from sets of events coming from the same source after having been deflected by intervening coherent magnetic fields. The observation of several events from the same source would open the possibility to accurately reconstruct the position of the source and also measure the integral of the component of the magnetic field orthogonal to the trajectory of the cosmic rays. We describe the largest multiplets found and compute the probability that they appeared by chance from an isotropic distribution. We find no statistically significant evidence for the presence of multiplets arising from magnetic deflections in the present data., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics
