Abstract

Abstract A fast and reliable range monitoring method is required to take full advantage of the high linear energy transfer provided by therapeutic ion beams like carbon and oxygen while minimizing damage to healthy tissue due to range uncertainties. Quasi-real-time range monitoring using in-beam positron emission tomography (PET) with therapeutic beams of positron-emitters of carbon and oxygen is a promising approach. The number of implanted ions and the time required for an unambiguous range verification are decisive factors for choosing a candidate isotope. An experimental study was performed at the FRS fragment-separator of GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH, Germany, to investigate the evolution of positron annihilation activity profiles during the implantation of $$^{14}$$ 14 O and $$^{15}$$ 15 O ion beams in a PMMA phantom. The positron activity profile was imaged by a dual-panel version of a Siemens Biograph mCT PET scanner. Results from a similar experiment using ion beams of carbon positron-emitters $$^{11}$$ 11 C and $$^{10}$$ 10 C performed at the same experimental setup were used for comparison. Owing to their shorter half-lives, the number of implanted ions required for a precise positron annihilation activity peak determination is lower for $$^{10}$$ 10 C compared to $$^{11}$$ 11 C and likewise for $$^{14}$$ 14 O compared to $$^{15}$$ 15 O, but their lower production cross-sections make it difficult to produce them at therapeutically relevant intensities. With a similar production cross-section and a 10 times shorter half-life than $$^{11}$$ 11 C, $$^{15}$$ 15 O provides a faster conclusive positron annihilation activity peak position determination for a lower number of implanted ions compared to $$^{11}$$ 11 C. A figure of merit formulation was developed for the quantitative comparison of therapy-relevant positron-emitting beams in the context of quasi-real-time beam monitoring. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that among the positron emitters of carbon and oxygen, $$^{15}$$ 15 O is the most feasible candidate for quasi-real-time range monitoring by in-beam PET that can be produced at therapeutically relevant intensities. Additionally, this study demonstrated that the in-flight production and separation method can produce beams of therapeutic quality, in terms of purity, energy, and energy spread.

Abstract

Background: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD–Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. Methods and results: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012–2016). Os autores examinaram as lâminas de 264 casos preclassificados como Doença de Hodgkin, pertencendo 159 ao arquivo do Dep. de Patologia da Fac. de Medicina da UFRGS e 105 ao arquivo do Instituto de Patologia de Porto Alegre. Os casos foram classificados de acordo com as determinações da Conferência de Rye em Predominância Linfocitária, Esclerose Nodular, Celularidade Mista e Depleção Linfocitária. Destes 264 casos, 220 foram confirmados como Doença de Hodgkin e com a seguinte distribuição: 93 casos de CM; 55 casos de EN; 46 casos de DL; 11 casos de PL; e 15 casos não classificados. A incidência segundo a idade evidencia uma maior concentração da DH dos 05 aos 20 anos, sendo que 76% dos casos ocorrem antes dos 40 anos. Há uma predominância do sexo masculino, numa proporção de 2:1.91% dos casos pertencem a pessoas de cor branca. Em 66% dos casos a 1ª biópsia foi feita na região cervical, seguida das regiões axilar e ingüinal e cavidade abdominal. Por fim os autores comentam seus resultados em função de alguns aspectos epidemiológicos e metodológicos, comparando-os com os da literatura.

Abstract

Successful primary closure of classic bladder exstrophy (BE) is crucial for development of bladder capacity and voided continence. It is universally agreed that an intensive pain management including the use of caudal epidural anesthesia is an essential cornerstone for the outcome of this complex surgery. Whether and to what extent pain is caused by structural or functional changes is not yet known. The nerve growth factor (NGF) is regarded as a marker for pain in different bladder disorders. This prospective study investigated the role of histological alterations and NGF in patients with BE including 34 patients with BE and 6 patients with congenital vesicoureterorenal reflux (VUR) who served as controls. Between January 2015 and April 2020 transmural bladder biopsies were taken from the posterior bladder wall during delayed primary bladder closure. The samples were stained for histological evaluation and subjected to immunohistochemistry to analyze NGFR p75. Differences in histological alterations were examined with Fisher's exact test, and Mann-Whitney-U-test was used to compare the NGFR p75 staining intensity between patients with BE and controls. Patients with BE showed significantly more often acute inflammation (p < 0.001), squamous metaplasia (p = 0.002), and cystitis glandularis (p = 0.005) as well as NGFR p75 in the urothelium (p = 0.003) than patients with VUR. A limitation of this study is the small number of participants due to the rare disease entity. Similar to other painful bladder disorders, pain transmission in BE after intitial closure may in part be facilitated by elevated NGF signaling through its receptor.

Abstract

The FRS Ion Catcher setup at GSI is used for high precision measurements of slowed down exotic nuclei. The current setup consists of a gas-filled stopping cell, working at cryogenic temperatures for improved gas purity, coupled to a radio-frequency quadrupole beamline for bunching and pre-selection and a multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer for precise mass measurements. The setup with all its components is controlled by various control systems. The development of a new slow control system for monitoring, control, and logging of all components of this setup is presented. The slow control is based on the LabVIEW Actor Framework enhanced by the Control System++ libraries, a highly scalable and extendable platform which is a powerful tool to create complex messaging schemes from custom events. The implementation and testing of the control system at the FRS Ion Catcher setup is discussed.

Abstract

Zinner syndrome (ZS) is a rare congenital malformation associated with seminal vesicle cysts, ejaculatory duct obstruction, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. The main treatment focus so far has been on symptomatic patients. Therefore, surgery has been reserved for these patients, and surgical treatment is mainly aimed at pain relief. ZS seems to be frequently associated with infertility, but diagnosing is challenging, particularly during adolescence. This literature review of ZS and infertility is based on the medical report of one adolescent patient.

Abstract

Mass measurements of the $^{69}$As, $^{70,71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes, produced via fragmentation of a $^{124}$Xe primary beam at the FRS at GSI, have been performed with the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) of the FRS Ion Catcher with an unprecedented mass resolving power of almost 1,000,000. For the $^{69}$As isotope, this is the first direct mass measurement. A mass uncertainty of 22 keV was achieved with only 10 events. For the $^{70}$Se isotope, a mass uncertainty of 2.6 keV was obtained, corresponding to a relative accuracy of $\delta$m/m = 4.0$\times 10^{-8}$, with less than 500 events. The masses of the $^{71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes were measured with an uncertainty of 23 and 16 keV, respectively. Our results for the $^{70,71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes agree with the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation, and our result for the $^{69}$As isotope resolves the discrepancy between previous indirect measurements. We measured also the mass of $^{14}$N$^{15}$N$^{40}$Ar (A=69) with a relative accuracy of $\delta$m/m = 1.7$\times 10^{-8}$, the highest yet achieved with a MR-TOF-MS. Our results show that the measured restrengthening of the proton-neutron interaction ($\delta$V$_{pn}$) for odd-odd nuclei at the N=Z line above Z=29 (recently extended to Z=37) is hardly evident at N-Z=2, and not evident at N-Z=4. Nevertheless, detailed structure of $\delta$V$_{pn}$ along the N-Z=2 and N-Z=4 lines, confirmed by our mass measurements, may provide a hint regarding the ongoing $\approx$500 keV discrepancy in the mass value of the $^{70}$Br isotope, which prevents including it in the world average of ${Ft}$-value for superallowed 0$^+\rightarrow$ 0$^+$ $\beta$ decays. Abstract

Successful primary closure of classic bladder exstrophy (BE) is crucial for development of bladder capacity and voided continence. It is universally agreed that an intensive pain management including the use of caudal epidural anesthesia is an essential cornerstone for the outcome of this complex surgery. Whether and to what extent pain is caused by structural or functional changes is not yet known. The nerve growth factor (NGF) is regarded as a marker for pain in different bladder disorders. This prospective study investigated the role of histological alterations and NGF in patients with BE including 34 patients with BE and 6 patients with congenital vesicoureterorenal reflux (VUR) who served as controls. Between January 2015 and April 2020 transmural bladder biopsies were taken from the posterior bladder wall during delayed primary bladder closure. The samples were stained for histological evaluation and subjected to immunohistochemistry to analyze NGFR p75. Differences in histological alterations were examined with Fisher's exact test, and Mann-Whitney-U-test was used to compare the NGFR p75 staining intensity between patients with BE and controls. Patients with BE showed significantly more often acute inflammation (p < 0.001), squamous metaplasia (p = 0.002), and cystitis glandularis (p = 0.005) as well as NGFR p75 in the urothelium (p = 0.003) than patients with VUR. A limitation of this study is the small number of participants due to the rare disease entity. Similar to other painful bladder disorders, pain transmission in BE after intitial closure may in part be facilitated by elevated NGF signaling through its receptor.

Although enormous effort has been made to further improve the operative techniques worldwide, the management of bladder exstrophy (BE) remains one of the most significant challenges in pediatric urology. Today it is universally agreed that successful and gentle initial bladder closure is decisive for favorable long-term outcome with regard to bladder capacity, renal function and continence. Due to a number of reasons, including a lack of comparable multicenter studies, a range of concepts is currently used to achieve successful primary closure. We review the literature of the last 15 years on the current concepts of bladder exstrophy repair with regard to the time of primary closure (initial vs. delayed closure), the concepts of primary closure (single-stage vs. staged approach; without osteotomy vs. osteotomy) and their outcomes. There is a worldwide lack of multicenter outcome studies with adequate patient numbers and precisely defined outcome parameters, based on the use of validated instruments. The modern staged repair (MRSE) in different variations, the complete primary reconstruction of exstrophy (CPRE), and the radical soft-tissue mobilization (RSTM) had been the most extensively studied and reported procedures. These major concepts are obligatory stable now for more than 20 years. Nevertheless, there are still a lot of open-ended questions e.g., on the potential for development of the bladder template, on continence, on long-term orthopedic outcome, on sexuality and fertility and on quality of life. Management of BE remains difficult and controversial. Further, clinical research should focus on multi-institutional collaborative trials to determine the optimal approach.

Infertility is sometimes more a man's problem than a woman's, failure of one or both of the testes to descend (cryptorchidism) being the most frequent genital malformation in boys. Untreated, the undescended testis impairs germ cell development and significantly reduces adult fertility. A-dark spermatogonia are the stem cells for all future spermatozoa, and their depletion can be reliably estimated in resin semithin sections. Additionally, there is an increased risk of testicular preneoplasia in the form of carcinoma in situ (CIS) cells. The authors report how the pathologic biopsy examination of juvenile cryptorchid testes can assess infertility and malignancy risk.

Abstract

We investigated bladder biopsies from patients with classic bladder exstrophy for the histological features and discuss the potential clinical significance of the findings.Bladder tissues were collected from patients with bladder exstrophy between 2004 and 2011. These specimens were obtained at primary bladder closure (group 1, 29 patients), during secondary reconstructive procedures (group 2, 27) or during cystectomy for failed reconstruction (group 3, 15). All tissue specimens were investigated for inflammatory, proliferative, metaplastic and dysplastic changes. Expression of urothelial differentiation markers CK13 and CK20 was determined by immunohistochemical analysis.Inflammatory, proliferative and metaplastic changes were found in bladder specimens of all subgroups. Neither dysplasia nor neoplasia was present. Severe epithelial changes such as cystitis glandularis and intestinal metaplasia were observed in up to 62% of bladders several years after primary closure. Aberrant expression patterns of CK13 and CK20 suggesting abnormal urothelial differentiation were shown to be present in the urothelium of all subgroups.Our findings provide prima facie evidence that the epithelial changes observed in the unclosed bladder template persist or even progress in a subset of bladders after primary closure. Although the malignant potential of cystitis glandularis and intestinal metaplasia is controversial, some patients may be at increased risk for dysplasia/neoplasia in the long term. Since the natural history of these lesions in the exstrophic bladder is unknown, these patients require lifelong surveillance.

Study results show most Minnesota dentists and staffs have not received formal training, but want to learn how to help their patients.

Abstract

We characterize the urothelium from patients with classic bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex for the expression of proteins associated with urothelial differentiation, and discuss a potential impact of urothelial phenotype on the structural and functional properties of the bladder template following bladder closure.From 2005 to 2010 bladder biopsies from 32 infants with bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex obtained at primary bladder closure were collected. After histological assessment immunochemistry was used to investigate the expression of uroplakin IIIa, cytokeratin differentiation restricted antigens CK13 and CK20, and tight junction protein claudin 4.Overall tissue morphology showed gross alterations with inflammatory, proliferative and metaplastic changes in most specimens. Sections of intact epithelium were present in 78% of biopsies. With respect to urothelial phenotype, CK13 was expressed in all specimens, whereas UPIIIa and CK20 were absent in 76% of the tissues examined. Of the biopsies 52% revealed an irregular expression pattern of tight junction protein Cl-4.This is the first study to our knowledge to characterize the urothelium from infants with bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex for the expression of urothelial differentiation associated antigens. Our findings suggest urothelial differentiation changes in a majority of exstrophic bladders, at least at primary bladder closure. Although the underlying etiology remains to be established, abnormal urothelial differentiation may result in a dysfunctional urothelial barrier with implications for the structural and functional properties of the bladder template. Despite the study limitations, our preliminary findings provide a platform for further investigation of the significance of the urothelium for the exstrophic bladder.

Purpose The undescended testis is one of the most common disease in paediatric urology. The aim of the present study was to analyse the testicular parenchymal blood flow as measured by the resistance index (RI) in relation to the patient's age and potential changes in RI following surgery. Material and Methods From 04/07 – 03/09 we prospectively studied 100 boys with uni- or bilateral undescended testes aged 1 to 14 using a high resolution linear ultrasound scanner. The RI was determined with simultaneous detection of B-mode and colour-flow Doppler before and 6 weeks after surgery. The obtained indices were compared with those of the descended contralateral testis. Results A total of 143 undescended testes (43 bilateral, 57 unilateral) and 57 descended contralateral testes were examined. In both groups the mean RI was 0,55 irrespecitve of the patient's age. Similarly, we did not observe any significant changes in RI following surgical correction of the undescended testis. Conclusions In contrast to progressive histo-pathological changes in untreated undescended testis over time, the time-point of surgery appears to have no relevant impact on the testicular parenchymal blood perfusion as measured by the RI. Therefore, the RI failed to show a predictive value with regard to both diagnosis and therapy of the undescended testis.

Purpose Early closure of bladder exstrophy (BE) within the first hours of life is often recommended to prevent further environmental injury of the bladder mucosa. However, the impact of early closure in respect of the incidence of malignant changes and inflammation remains unclear. Therefore we examined polyps excised during primary closure in delayed reconstruction. Material and Methods From January 2006 to September 2008, in 13 patients with classical BE a primary closure (10 single-stage repairs and 3 staged repairs) was performed at a median age of 8.5 weeks (7 th – 10 th week). Mucosal specimens and polyps were obtained during surgery. Tissue sections were assessed by two investigators (S.B.; F.H.) independently. Histological analysis included histomorphological examination regarding inflammation, fibrosis, edema, squamous metaplasia, presence of vonBrunn nests, cystitis cystica and cystitis glandularis of the intestinal type (CGIT). Immunohistochemical analysis included CDx-2 and CK 20. Results Squamous metaplasia was detected in 76.9%. 92.3% showed at least minimal active inflammation. Cystitis cystica was diagnosed in 84.6%, vonBrunn nests in 23.1%. Only one case showed intestinal metaplasia within changes of CGIT. Dysplastic urothelium was not found. Immunohistochemically nuclear staining for CDx-2 was found within only one case with CGIT. No abnormal CK20 staining was found but CK20-positivity within superficial cells of the urothelium was detected in 92.3%. Conclusions - Delayed primary bladder closure does not induce histologically or immunohistochemically detectable premalignant changes. - In comparison to early bladder closure cystitis cystica and inflammation seems to be not more frequent in delayed closure around the 8 th week.

19. Dental health care workers' response to the HIV epidemic

Random samples of Minnesota DHCWs were surveyed in late 1989 regarding HIV-related and infection control KAPs. Response rates were: dentists 69% (438/631); hygienists 73% (439/603); and assistants 56% (384/691). More than 50% of DHCWs said they did not have sufficient information to safely and effectively provide care for HIV-infected patients. Use of infection control techniques varied considerably. Parenteral injuries were relatively high, but only 5% of DHCWs believed they could have been exposed to HIV from these occurrences, and few DHCWs sought medical evaluation. Less than 45% of offices had a blood/body fluid exposure staff protocol, and few offices had a policy for HIV-infected staff. Nearly twice as many DHCWs said offices have an ethical versus a legal duty to treat HIV-infected persons. Low percentages of DHCWs believed the private practice dental office is the best place to treat HIV-infected patients, but approximately 50% said they would provide care. Twenty percent indicated that a diagnosed HIV-infected person had been seen at their office. Seventy-six percent said staff had been uncomfortable treating HIV-infected patients, 14% said staff had refused to treat, and 10% said referrals were difficult. DHCWs exhibited substantial improvements in their HIV-related KAPs compared to previous surveys. Nevertheless, additional cognitive and behavioral changes are necessary to ensure that all DHCWs provide care with the highest technical, legal, and ethical standards for all patients.

20. Comparative Pelvic Floor Imaging in the Bladder-Exstrophy-Epispadias-Complex (BEEC)

Purpose The congenital bony pelvis and pelvic floor defect highly predisposes females in the BEEC to uterine prolapse. There is a paucity of knowledge about pelvic floor anatomy after reconstruction of the BEEC in long-term follow-up. Material and Methods 19 female BEEC patients (mean age 27.3 years) and 5 controls were included in a cross-sectional study. The pubovisceral muscle was investigated with perineal three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound and MRI. Results 13 females had initial a functional bladder reconstruction, 6 patients got an urinary diversion. 12 patients had a closure of the pelvis either by traction bandage or osteotomy. In 7 patients symphysis was not approximated. 4 BEEC patients had complete uterine prolapse and one partial vaginal prolapse (26%). Symphyseal diastasis measured mean 5.0 cm after symphyseal approximation, 10.4 cm without symphyseal approximation in BEEC and 0.48 cm in controls. Levator hiatus was mean 4.5 cm in sonography and 4.4 cm in MRI after symphyseal approximation, 7.4 cm/5.9 cm without symphyseal approximation and 2.9 cm/4.2 cm in controls. Levator angle was median 85.7°/82.9° after symphyseal approximation, 108.6°/112.9° without symphyseal approximation and 45.1°/71.3° in controls. Prolapse was significant in symphysis >10 cm and levator hiatus > 6 cm. Conclusions This study shows that perineal 3D ultrasound is a useful diagnostic tool in the assessment of the levator ani muscle in BEEC. Established biometric pelvic floor parameter can predict the risk for uterine prolapse. Anterior symphyseal approximation and functional reconstruction allow deeper relocation of the bladder neck into the pelvis documented in a normal levator hiatus width and this might prevent uterine prolapse.

Abstract

To evaluate instrument sterilization procedures in Minnesota, biological indicators were used to monitor 406 sterilizers in 381 dental offices. Findings suggest a general improvement in instrument performance over that of a decade ago, but sterilization failure rates are still too high. Sterilizer operator errors are a major cause of sterilization failures. BIs are useful in monitoring sterilization performance only when sterilization procedures are performed consistently and competently by well-trained staff using adequately maintained equipment.

This study was conducted to determine whether Venturi Fluoride Saturator (VFS) systems could be used to fluoridate small community and school water supply systems with an acceptable level of maintenance. VFS systems were installed and operated at four school and six community well sites according to state and federal regulations and recommendations. School VFS systems were unable to maintain optimum fluoride residuals even with substantial maintenance. All six community well site VFS systems performed acceptably, with only a few short lapses. VFS system maintenance was labor intensive. Recurring problems were caused by lengthy equipment delivery delays, the unavailability of timely technical assistance to support the VFS system, and the inadequate quality of VFS equipment and design. Based upon these findings, further expansion of the use of VFS systems either for community or school fluoridation cannot be recommended. Additional study of and improvements in the VFS system are indicated. Three major recommendations appear appropriate: (1) extensive laboratory testing of the VFS system concept under controlled conditions should be performed to determine the functioning parameters of this equipment under different hydrody-namic conditions; (2) additional research and development of the VFS unit to improve the quality of operations and the quality control of manufacturing and assembly should be undertaken; and (3) a VFS equipment distribution network should be developed, with sufficient logistical and technical support to supply equipment parts and expertise for installation, monitoring, and maintenance in a timely and efficient manner.

To obtain comprehensive information about the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Minnesota dental hygienists and registered dental assistants, a questionnaire was mailed to random samples of both groups in the fall of 1988. Most assistants and hygienists claimed to always wear gloves, but substantially fewer indicated always wearing a mask. Use of eye protection showed even lower compliance, with less than half of either group routinely using protective eyewear or a face shield. Assistants and hygienists reported incurring numerous needlesticks and instrument injuries. A contributing factor may be that many staff were still recapping needles with an unprotected hand. Most people who had not been vaccinated against hepatitis B said that they would be immunized if their employer or health insurance paid for it. Less than one-half of either group felt knowledgeable about infection control. Only one-third of assistants and less than one-half of hygienists claimed to be familiar with the Centers for Disease Control's "Recommended Infection Control Practices for Dentistry." This is consistent with assistants' and hygienists' reported infection control related behaviors. Other than gloving, many recommended infection control measures--masking, wearing protective eyewear and uniforms, hepatitis B immunization, and proper handling of sharps--were not employed by a substantial number of respondents. Many respondents indicated insufficient knowledge to safely and effectively care for patients with hepatitis B, hepatitis B carriers, or individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Abstract

Bei insgesamt 25 menschlichen Herzen und 3 Hundeherzen wurden vergleichende fermenthistochemische Untersuchungen mit Tetrazoliumsalzlosungen durchgefuhrt. Dabei zeigte sich, das nach Perfusion der ganzen Herzen mit Tetrazoliumlosungen ausgedehnte artefizielle helle Bezirke beobachtet wurden, die sich bei nachfolgender Inkubation der Grosschnitte positiv anfarbten. Die von Lichtig, Feldman, Glagov und Wissler (1973) vorgeschlagene Perfusionsmethode eignet sich daher nach unseren Ergebnissen nicht fur die gleichzeitige makroskopische und histologische Beurteilung von ischamischen Herzmuskelveranderungen oder Polgen agonaler Zirkulationsstorungen. Dagegen hat sich die einfache Inkubation von Herzmuskelgewebe zum makroskopischen Nachweis von frischen Infarkten bewahrt.

Abstract

Guinea pig hearts isolated by the Langendorff technique were perfused with a nitro-blue tetrazolium salt solution. In spite of a homogeneous dark-blue staining at the macroscopic examination, light-microscopic studies showed a spotty staining of the myocardial fibers. Since no microscopic alterations were found which could explain the unstained areas, ultramicroscopic studies were undertaken. At ultrastructural level, striking alterations of myocardial cells were observed. They consisted of mitochondrial lesions, alterations of the transversal tubuli, and intercalated discs. Arteriolar narrowing and capillary edema were found, suggesting that pathological changes in the microcirculation could be a possible reason for the spotty staining of the myocardial fibers. Some speculations on the nature and localization of the formazan granules are also reported.

Abstract

We show that ( o )-[ 82/77 Br]bromohippuran ([ 82/77 Br]-C 6 H 4 CONHCH 2 COONa) with unlabelled ( o )-iodohippuran (I-C 6 H 4 CONHCH 2 COONa) as carrier has in vivo properties analogous to ( o )-[ 131 I]iodohippuran in rabbits and mice, while 77 Br has some chemical, nuclidic and physiological advantages over 131 I. This particular study was sufficiently encouraging to warrant a separate follow up study, currently in progress, with more advanced investigations on animals, while the main objective is eventual clinical trials, including whole body dosimetry studies.

Abstract

A case of a term newborn infant with a congenital Wilm's tumor who developed sevece jaundice and consumption coagulopathy is reported. After the removal of the tumor, the clotting factors become normal and the jaundice resolved. It is suggested that there was an association between the presence of the tumor and hemolysis and consumption coagulopathy.

Abstract

Comparative histochemical studies with Tetrazolium salt solutions were performed on 25 human and 3 canine hearts. After perfusion of whole hearts with Tetrazolium solutions extensive unstained areas were observed which proved to be artefacts, since they reacted positively after incubation of the heart-slices. The perfusion method of Lichtig, Feldman, Glagov and Wissler (1973) which was proposed for macroscopic and microscopic diagnosis of ischemic cardiac lesions was not found to be suitable for the identification of microcirculatory disturbances. The usual incubation method, however, proved to be useful for the macroscopic localization of recent myocardial infarcts.
