Elektronen konnen longitudinale Anregungen des festen Korpers erzeugen. Sie ubertragen hierbei eine Energie ΔE=hω und einen Impuls ▄q auf die Kristallelektronen. Die Anregungswahrscheinlichkeit ist proportional zu Im \(\left( { - \frac{1}{{ \in (\omega )}}} \right)\), wobei e(ω) die Dielektrizitats-konstante des festen Korpers darstellt. Die Auswertung der Energieverlustspektren von Elektronen erlaubt daher die Bestimmung von e(ω) von isotropen sowie anisotropen Kristallen. Beispiele fur die Anwendbarkeit dieser Methode werden fur Metalle, Isolatoren und Halbleiter gegeben. Der q-Wert, der den Kristallelektronen ubertragen wird, kann mit der Ausdehnung der Brillouin Zone vergleichbar werden, so das die q-Abhangigkeit von e(ω, q) ins Spiel kommt. Dieser Effekt wird an Graphit gezeigt.

The influence of a sinusoidal surface corrugation of a thin silver film on the damping and the phase velocity of surface plasma oscillations is determined quantitatively. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations on the basis of a theory developed by Kretschmann and Kroger.

We investigated the phase velocity and the damping of guided light modes in wavy waveguides. A pronounced dependence of the damping on the angle α between the propagation direction of the mode and the groove lines was observed whereas the phase velocity remained unaffected within the accuracy of the measurement. Coupling processes between the various guided modes caused strong discontinuities in the dispersion curves.

The propagation velocity and damping of surface plasmons on sinusoidally modulated gold- and silver surfaces with different grating constants (ca. 4000 A, 8000 A and 15000 A) are measured at wavelengths of 6471 A and 5682 A as function of the amplitude of the grating (up to ca. 300 A). Earlier measurements of the changes of the dispersion relation produced by the sinusoidal profile could be improved by reducing the contribution of a second harmonic to the grating profile to less than about 0.06. Observed and calculated data, obtained with the Rayleigh method, show good agreement.

The light emitted during the different stages of the spark development in nitrogen has been observed with spectroscopic methods. The first detectable light is emitted with sufficient intensity just after the critical amplification. This type of radiation continues till the start of the heating of the plasma in the predischarge channel. It allows one to determine the electron density and to calculate the current in the predischarge channel. At about 170 ns after the start of the avalanche the dissociation of the molecules and the ionization of the atoms takes place near xcrit in times of a few ns. This causes a rapid increase of the current and the emission of a strong continuum intensity as well as the emission of atom and ion lines. Now the predischarge channel transforms into a plasma channel at a current of about 10 A. Applying plasma diagnostic methods in the spectral range of 3000-8600 AA the temperatures and the electron densities as function of time and radius of the channel can be derived in the plasma channel.

Experiments with surface plasmons on rough and sinusoidally corrugated surfaces of metals with quasi-free electrons are performed to study the changes of the dispersion relation. The result is that the eigenfrequency of the plasma oscillations is displaced and the damping is increased. The dependence of the displacement and of the damping on the height of the roughness is shown. The results are compared with calculated values.

Surface plasmons (SP) having the maximum of their intensity in the surface, are sensitive to geometric perturbations as roughness or gratings. This influence can be measured by the change of the dispersion relation of the SP. Whereas the results on sinusoidal gratings of Ag and Au can be calculated and agree with the observed results, the situation of statistically rough surfaces is less clear. An attempt is made to display the present situation. The experimental roughness data of “smooth” (natural roughness) surfaces of silver films and of surfaces with enhanced roughness are collected and their consistency is discussed. There is agreement between the values of the rms height, δ ∼5 , of “smooth” vaporised silver films (about 500thick) measured by different authors. The first-order theory describes the results in a satisfactory way. The situation of surfaces of Ag films of 500thickness with enhanced roughness (underlayer of CaF 2 ), however, is not satisfying since the calculated data of the displacement of the dispersion curve and of the increase of the damping using second-order approximations of the field above the rough metal surface are smaller than the observed data. The theoretical explanation is not yet settled, probably the approximation is not sufficient. The observed values of δ at thick films of silver (some 1000 ) are discussed in section 5.

Measurements of the reflection of thin silver films are reported which have been performed with the ATR method at constant wavelength λ as well as at constant angle of incidence θ. The backbending of the reflection minimum as a function of θ at constant λ is discussed. The influence of the interband absorption determines the R (θ,λ) dependence. Surface roughness displaces the turning point in the backbending curve.

The plasma resonance radiation of thin silver films (radiative plasmon, λ about 3250 A) is studied by measuring the angular distribution, the spectral dependence and the thickness variation of the emitted radiation. It is shown that the light emission is caused by a variation of the dielectric function ϵ(ω) in the interior of the metal film and not by the surface roughness. The mean deviation of ϵ(ω) can be measured. The structure of the silver films could be changed by inserting additional disorder into the film; the influence on the imaginary part of ϵ(ω) can be measured.

The attenuated total reflection method was used to study the influence of dye monolayers on surface plasmons.

Using an ATR-arrangement guided modes are excited in a system of quartz/Ag/LiF/air layers. The excitation of the light modes is observed either by the reflection minimum at the resonance angle or by the maximum of the scattered light due to the coupling of light modes with photons via the roughness of the LiF film. The field distribution of the s-mode inside the LiF film allows to attribute the scattered light to the roughness of the LiF/air boundary. The evaluation of the measurements using the modes m s = 0−5 gives the roughness spectrum | s (Δ k )| 2 within the range of spatial frequencies 10 -4 A -1 ⩽ Δ k ⩽ 3 × 10 -3 A -1 . Assuming a gaussian correlation function a value of the r.m.s. height δ = 40−50 A is obtained. The observations show that the linear theory of plasmon scattering is valid at these r.m.s. heights if one probes with light modes m s ⩾ 0. Probing with the TM 0 ( m p = 0) mode (surface plasmon) which has its maximum field in the rough boundary and which has thus a stronger interaction with the roughness, the validity of the linear theory goes lost already beyond 20−30 A.

The electron energy loss spectra of volume plasmons near the forward direction are reported for silicon and germanium. The peak position ℏ ω p = 16.9 eV (16.2 eV), the linewidth ℏ γ = 3.2 eV (3.1eV) and the height h = 5.3 (5.2) of the loss function of silicon (germanium) are given and it is shown that the shape of the plasmon loss is well reproduced by a nearly free-electron-gas model.

Surface plasmons have been excited with the prism method at sinusoidally modulated silver surfaces. The scattered light intensity of the first diffraction order has been investigated for gratings with different modulation heights H. The scattered light intensity increases up to modulation heights H of ca. 70 A with the square of H. We discuss the limits for applying first order scattering theories to surface plasmon scattering experiments.

A short survey is given of some optical phenomena which are due to the roughness of surfaces and thin films. Recent experiments are described on the diffuse scattering of light produced by the decay of plasmons and on the displacement of the dispersion relation to higher K values, together with increased damping, on rough surfaces. Similar results on wavy boundaries (gratings) are found. Further, the guide light modes in dielectric films show the same behaviour under the influence of roughness.

The influence of superficial layers on the plasma resonance emission produced on silver surfaces is studied as function of the dielectric constant and thickness of the surface films. Very thin tarnishing films can be detected in this way.

Es werden die Ionisierungsvorgange, die beim Anlegen von Stosspannungen an Drahten und Spitzen in verschiedenen Gasen (H2, N2, Luft, CO2) entstehen, in der Nebelkammer sichtbar gemacht.

The energy spectrum of electrons scattered inelastically at cleavage surfaces of silicon and germanium into Bragg reflection spots differs from that obtained by transmission by low lying characteristic energy losses. The dependence of their intensity on the order of the diffraction spots, on the surface roughness, and on the angle near the diffraction spot shows that they are due to surface plasma oscillations. The transmission energy spectrum is mainly due to the excitation of volume plasma oscillations.

The energy spectrum of electrons, inelastically scattered by solids, shows intensity maxima which are due to the excitation of plasma oscillations of the surface of the solid under examination. The study of this phenomenon thus gives information of the surface. The characteristic features of these surface energy losses are resumed (position, thickness- and angular dependence of the loss intensity, coupling dispersion). Recent experiments are described which show the influence of thin coating films on the position and intensity of the surface losses: e.g., oxide films on Mg and Al, Mg film on Al, carbon film on Ag. An appendix resumes the theoretical relations for evaluating the experimental results.

Startet eine Elektronenlawine an der Kathode einer Entladungsstrecke, so leitet sie eine Entladung ein, deren Entwicklung je nach der Grose des Produktes aus Druckp und Elektrodenabstandd in verschiedener Weise vor sich geht. Bei kleinenp ·d-Werten ( ∼ 1000 Torr · cm) vor sich gehendenKanalaufbau, fur den die Mitwirkung der „Eigenraumladung“ der Lawine charakteristisch ist. Diese Eigenraumladung bewirkt, das die Lawine von einer bestimmten „kritischen“ Verstarkung an, bei der das Feld der Eigenraumladung vergleichbar mit dem angelegten Feld wird, nicht mehr miteαx (α=const) weiterwachst, und das die Lawine ihre Geschwindigkeit betrachtlich erhoht (sogenannter „anodengerichteter“ Kanal). Das Zurucklaufen zur Kathode wird den Ionen dadurch erspart, das ihr starkes Raumladungsfeld die durch die gasionisierende Strahlung in der Umgebung gebildeten Photoelektronen hereinzieht und somit einen Entladungsschlauch zwischen Lawinenkopf und Kathode in Form des „kathodengerichteten“ Kanals herstellt, in einer Zeit, die erheblich kleiner als die Dauer eines Ionisierungsspieles ist. — Mit Hilfe dieser beiden typischen Aufbauarten, deren Auftreten von dem jeweiligenp ·d-Wert abhangig ist, wird das vorliegende Versuchsmaterial geordnet und diskutiert: Es lassen sich die Versuche bei kleinen Drucken sowie die Versuche bei Atmospharendruck und geringen Abstanden (∼ 0,1 cm) bei Feldstarken gleich und nur wenig groser als die statische Durchschlagfeldstarke eindeutig dem Townsend-Aufbau zuordnen (Fall I). Die Experimente bei Atmospharendruck und mehr sowie Abstanden von 1 cm und mehr dagegen verlaufen bereits im Gebiet des Kanalaufbaues (Fall II). Eine ausfuhrliche Betrachtung des Kanalaufbaues ergibt die Aufstellung einer Zundbedingung an Stelle der in diesem Gebiet ungultigen Townsendschen Zundbedingung, die die gemessenen statischen Durchschlagfeldstarken annahernd wiedergibt. Gleichzeitig ergibt sich im Bilde der Kanalentwicklungen eine Erklarung fur die gegenuber dem Townsend-Aufbau erheblich kurzeren Aufbauzeiten bei hohen Drucken (∼ 10−7 sec gegen 10−4 sec), da nureine Elektronenlawine den Elektrodenraum zu durchlaufen hat, um die auserst schnell verlaufende Kanalentladung einzuleiten. Bei Verwendung von Uberspannungen erreicht die Elektronenlawine schon vor der Ankunft an der Anode ihre „kritische“ Verstarkung, d. h. sie schlagt in kurzerer Zeit in die Kanalentwicklung um, so das die Aufbauzeit mit zunehmender Uberspannung abnimmt, wie die kathodenoszillographischen Untersuchungen ergeben hatten.

Oszillographische Beobachtungen an einzelnen Elektronenlawinen groser Tragerzahlen (>108) zeigen, das nach Ablauf der Elektronenlawine ein Stromanstieg („Kanal“) erfolgt, der zum Durchschlag fuhrt. Diese Erscheinung ist deutlich verschieden von dem Prozes der Nachlieferung durch kathodischen Photoeffekt. Verwendet man Uberspannungen, so verkurzt sich die Zeit zwischen dem Ende der Elektronenkomponente und dem Kanaleinsatz („Kanalentwicklungszeit“). Die Erklarung dieser Oszillogramme erfolgt auf Grund der Vorstellungen vom Kanalaufbau.

Im Gegensatz zu Rontgenstrahlen treten bei Reflexion von monochromatischen Elektronenstrahlen an Einkristallflachen eine grosere Anzahl von Reflexionspunkten in Form eines Kreuzgitters auf, woraus zu schliesen ist, das das Auflosungsvermogen der Punktreihe parallel zum Strahl den Wert von etwa 10 fur Elektronenwellen nicht ubersteigen kann. Hier liegt ein Versagen der wellenkinematischen Theorie vor, welches in der starken Wechselwirkung der Elektronenstrahlen mit dem Kristallgitter begrundet ist. — Es ergibt sich eine genaue Methode zur Messung der inneren Potentiale; letztere haben in den bisherigen Fallen immer positive Werte gezeigt. Weiter werden Intensitaten verglichen und Abweichungen beobachtet, die sich mit Hilfe der dynamischen Theorie deuten lassen.

Es wird der Nachweis erbracht, das ein Funke (in H2, Luft oder O2) eine Strahlung aussendet, die das Gas (H2, Luft oder O2) zu ionisieren vermag. Die Beobachtung erfolgt in der Nebelkammer, in der die Photoelektronen, die durch die kurzwellige Strahlung (800 bis 1000 A) des Funkens im Gas ausgelost werden, durch Stosionisation zu einer Elektronenlawine verstarkt werden. Die Abnahme der Dichte der Nebelspuren mit wachsendem Abstand von der Funkenstrecke erlaubt die Messung der Absorptionskoeffizienten dieser Strahlung. Sie ergeben sich fur Luft zu μ760≅ 2 cm−1, fur H2 zu μ760≅ 0,8 cm−1 und fur O2 zu μ760≅ 5 cm−1. — Eine solche gasionisierende Strahlung wird ebenfalls von Gleitentladungen sowie im Vorstadium des Funkens von den sogenannten „Vorentladungskanalen“ erzeugt. Es wird auf die Bedeutung der gasionisierenden Strahlung fur den Ubergang der Elektronenlawine in den Funkenkanal hingewiesen. Die hier beobachtete Strahlung scheint, wie ein Vergleich der Absorptionskoeffizienten zeigt, mit der in einer Zahlrohrentladung entstehenden kurzwelligen Strahlung identisch zu sein. — Eine so kurzwellige Sonnenstrahlung wurde bis in die Ionosphare eindringen konnen, um deren Leitfahigkeit zu erzeugen.

Using a high-gain image intensifier and a pulsed discharge gap, electron avalanches are photographed by means of the light emitted as a result of excitation processes by electron impact accompanying ionisation. — Principle and sensitivity of the method are briefly discussed. Electron drift velocities in nitrogen are measured, and the range of mean energy of agitation of electrons is derived from the photographs taken. Preliminary data have also been obtained for argon.

Non radiative surface plasmons decay into photons on a rough surface. This light emission is studied with gold- and silver foils of different thicknesses. The surface plasmons are excited in this experiment by light. By this way a relatively accurate determination of the optical constants is possible.

The intensity of electrons (45 keV) scattered by Silicium cleavage surfaces (111) was measured by a Faraday cage. By means of an electrical retarding field the energy distribution of these electrons was determined: the Kikuchi lines and the Bragg maxima contain 95% resp. 80% of electrons with energy lossesΔE>5 eVolt. This high value of inelastically scattered electrons is theoretically unexplained. Applying plasma theory there is some difficulty to reconcile the presence of electrons with one energy loss in the Kikuchi lines with the small deflection which takes place in the elementary process of inelastic scattering.

Light modes are excited in thin polyurethane films (freely supported) and LiF films (bounded by a silver film). They are registered by the radiation which is emitted from the rough film surface. The dispersion relation together with the observed position of the s and p modes allows one to determine the refractive index and thickness of the polyurethane film whereas in the case of LiF one needs a small anisotropy of the optical properties (≈ 1%) of the film to fit the observed data. The refractive indices could be determined within an error of about 10 −4 .

Es wird das Verhalten einer Elektronenlawine im homogenen Feld bei ihrem Lauf auf die Anode diskutiert: Die Zahl der LadungstrAger nimmt exponentiell zu (n = eαx ) und die Geschwindigkeit ist die normale Lawinengeschwindigkeit (u= 1,25 · 107 cm/s [Luft,E/p ≈ 40]). Beim Erreichen einer gewissen kritischen VerstArkung beginnt sich eine zunehmende Feldverzerrung vor dem Lawinenkopf auszubilden und die Entwicklungsgeschwindigkeit nimmt zu („Instabilwerden“ der Lawinenentladung, ubergang in den „anodenseitigen Kanal“). Mit steigender Feldverzerrung bewirken auch die Photoelektronen, die durch die gasionisierende Strahlung vor der Kanalspitze entstehen, eine Erhohung der Vorwachsgeschwindigkeit. Ist eine hohe Feldverzerrung vorhanden, so wird die Entladung mit Hilfe der Photoelektronen auch zur Kathode zurucklaufen („kathodenseitiger Kanal“). Nach Abschlu\ dieses Ruckwachsens vom Lawinenkopf zur Kathode verbindet ein TrAgerschlauch beide Elektroden, der den spAteren „Funkenkanal“ darstellt. In einem solchen TrAgerschlauch kann sich infolge des Querfeldes mit Hilfe der gasionisierenden Strahlung, eine sehr rasch entwickelnde Entladung ausbilden, wie ihn der Funke, die „Haupt“-blitzentladungen sowie die „Haupt“ spitzenentladungen darstellen.

Electron-Energy loss spectra of Ge and Si (amorphous, polycristalline and monocristalline) are measured in the low energy region of the band-band transitions and in the energy region of the plasma losses. These spectra are compared with the loss curve calculated from optical data: Discrepancies in the absolute values of the height and in the width of the plasma losses are found; the structures of the region of the bandband excitations show an agreement in the positions of the maxima, but not in their height. Additional electron energy loss maxima are observed.

Calculations, within the SCF approximation, of the scattering cross section for the production of elementary excitations of the electron gas by high-energy photons are presented. The manner in which the cross section, dominated by plasmons at small momentum transfer, develops single-particle character with increasing momentum transfer is emphasized. It is shown that collective effects persist to wavevectors of the order of 6kF, where kF is the magnitude of the Fermi wavevector. This corresponds to a wavevector of about 9qc for a high electron-density gas (rs approximately 2) and 6qc for low electron-density gas (rs approximately 5), with qc the critical wavevector at which the onset of Landau damping occurs.

Es wurde der Abfall der Dichte thermischer Neutronen am Rand eines neutronenhaltigen Wasservolumens (H2O, D2O) untersucht. Die hierbei auftretenden Abweichungen der Meswerte vom theoretischen Dichteverlauf werden diskutiert, wobei zu ihrer Erklarung die unsymmetrische Winkelverteilung der thermischen Neutronen nach dem Stos mit dem Wasserstoffkern herangezogen wird. Der Mittelwert des cos ϑ (ϑ Streuwinkel) wird fur denD-Kern zu etwa 0,3 ermittelt.

Die Interferenzerscheinungen von Elektronenwellen lassen sich mit Hilfe des reziproken Gitters ubersichtlich zusammenfassen sowohl die an dunnen Schichten (eine Dimension gering) wie die kleiner Kristalle (drei Dimensionen gering). Gegenuber dem reziproken Gitter ausgedehnter Streukorper unterscheidet sich das reziproke Gitter kleiner und kleinster Kristalle dadurch., das bekanntlich der Intensitatsbereich um jeden Punkt des reziproken Gitters (Hauptmaximum) eine betrachtliche Ausdehnung hat (umgekehrt proportional der Kristallgrose) und das zwischen diesen Hauptmaxima Nebenmaxima auftreten, die infolge der geringen Kristalldimensionen nur wenige und daher gut beobachtbar sind. Die Verbreiterung der Hauptmaxima fuhrt bei Durchstrahlung einer dunnen Kristallplatte, z. B. Glimmer, zu dem gleichzeitigen Auftreten vieler Interferenzen, bei Bestrahlen eines Pulvers kleiner Kristalle zu der bekannten Verbreiterung der Interferenzringe. Die Nebenmaxima werden bei der Durchstrahlung einer dunnen Kristallplatte am besten im konvergenten Bundel beobachtet. Desgleichen treten sie bei Bestrahlen eines sehr kleinen Kristalles oder eines Pulvers kleinster Kristalle auf. In diesem Falle kommen im allgemeinen noch (ganzzahlige) Maxima hinzu (die Nebenmaxima haben gebrochene Indizes), die bei grosen Kristallen der Strukturfaktor verbietet, wahrend bei kleinen Kristallen die Intensitat dieser „verbotenen“ Interferenzen von der Gestalt und der Grose des Kristallchens abhangt. Ein Strukturfaktor ist im allgemeinen nicht mehr zu definieren. Weiterhin wird unter anderem diskutiert: Aus der Form und Grose der Interferenzflecke, vor allem der (000)-Interferenz (Primarfleck), kann man Form und Grose der streuenden Kristalle ermitteln. — Analog dem reziproken Gitter kleinster Kristalle last sich das der Molekule aufstellen und aus ihm wesentliche Zuge des Gasinterferenzbildes anschaulich ableiten. — Die Rolle der Nebenmaxima sowie der bei kleinen Winkeln gestreuten Elektronenstrahlung bei der elektronenmikroskopischen Abbildung wird besprochen.

Mit einer Nebelkammer, fur die Untersuchung der Stosionisierungsvorgange der Elektronen im elektrischen Feld besonders geeignet, werden die Elektronenlawinen sichtbar gemacht und ihre Eigenschaften untersucht. Aus der Lange der Nebelspur und der Dauer des Spannungsstoses wird die Vorwachsgeschwindigkeit der Lawine bestimmt (Luft 1,25 · 107 cm/sec, H2 0,75 · 107 cm/sec). Ein Vergleich mit den Beweglichkeitsformeln ergibt die thermische Energie der Elektronen. Diese kann unabhangig davon auch aus der Breite der Lawinenspur bestimmt werden, da die thermische Diffusion fur die Zerstreuung der Elektronen masgebend ist. Beide Werte der thermischen Energie stimmen fur Luft uberein, nicht fur H2, wofur Grunde angefuhrt werden. — Die Zundung einer Entladung bei hohen Drucken ist damit der Beobachtung zuganglich und stimmt im wesentlichen mit den bisherigen Vorstellungen uberein.

In the present paper the epitaxial growth of silver on rocksalt crystals cleaved in vacuum has been investigated. If one presumes, that the orientation of the metal foils is strongly influenced by gas layers growing on the crystal surface after cleavage, it is possible to predict the dependence of the crystal-orientation on the deposition conditions. Systematical investigations of silverfoils demonstrated the validity of this presumption. Beyond this it was possible to observe the gradual deposition of gas layers by varying the time between cleavage of the substrate and the beginning of silver-deposition.

Theoretical results are reported on the possibility to observe light emitted from the non radiative surface plasmons which are excited by fast electrons traversing a smooth vacuum-metal boundary. By covering the backside of the metal film with a medium of refractive indexn>1, light can be decoupled from the non radiative plasmons. In the angular intensity distribution this light has a strong characteristic peak exceeding the ordinary transition radiation by a factor of the order of 102.
