Effects of family differences on survival, length, weight, growth, and pyloric caeca number for juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were analyzed in binary associations of families (sib-groups), using a genetic variant with “golden” phenotype as a marker. In such an association, the performance of a family i mixed with family j depends on its own ability (P1), on the influence of the associated family (AJ), and on possible effects specific to the ij association. Experimental results showed that specific effects were negligible, and that the AJ influence was significant on body length and weight (after 3 mo of age), and opposite to the PJ value of the same family. Growth showed the same feature, but short of significance. The genetic marker caused some detrimental pleiotropic effects on length, weight, and growth, and some limited interactions with the familial factors studied. Results suggest that, when practicing selection, aquaculturists should prevent early size differences from becoming enhanced by competition, and should consider periodic size grading and multi-step selection. Results also suggest that family interactions should be accounted for when analyzing mixed-family genetic evaluation data.

Selection of electronic resources should be integrated into existing collection development policies and procedures. Such selection is complicated by the number of options available, such as: multiple formats and access methods; pricing schemes; interface designs; differences in scope, timeliness and coverage; and technical support issues. At SIBL, the selection of electronic resources was done by an interdepartmental committee which drew upon subject specialists and which based selection on the existing collection development policy. The implementation of electronic resources at SIBL was accomplished in tandem with training for staff and for the public.

CD-ROM is having a growing impact on U. S. medical library operations and services. End-user searching of computerized databases has increased substantially since the introduction of CD-ROM. Professional searching on CD-ROM is starting to take hold, and promises to challenge the online industry. Specialized applications are becoming available such as full text and cataloging databases, and computerized training programs on interactive videodisks.Librarians need to make important choices on which CD-ROM products to acquire, and whether to access data in print, online, or on CD-ROM. The role and image of librarians are changing as they become computer specialists and teachers of end-user searching as well as performing traditional library duties. The future of CD-ROM will include networks and dial-access. The capacity of both disks and readers will increase. CD-ROM applications in medical libraries will expand as prices decrease and interfaces with other technologies become possible. An on-going dialog between librarians, vendors, and CD-ROM producers is necessary for this wonderful new technology to be used to best advantage.

A cell line was established from a portion of a 25-cm stromal sarcoma of the left breast of a 65-year-old woman. The clinical course was rapid with tumor recurrence on the chest wall less than 1 month after mastectomy. Other cutaneous and abdominal metastases occurred shortly thereafter, and death followed within 3 months despite chemotherapy. The cultured cells, designated RW-972, produced large amounts of acid mucopolysaccharides (hyaluronic acid) and mimicked the aggressive growth characteristics seen in the patient. After injection into nude mice, the tumor grew rapidly and occasionally produced metastases. This unique cell line, RW-972, presumably derived from the stromal component of a human malignant cystosarcoma phyllodes, might be useful in studies of experimental therapy of this rare tumor type and of lobular stromal cells of breast. It may also be used to investigate hyaluronic acid production by tumor cells.

The variability of parental origin in hatching and early survival rates of brown trout ♀ × brook trout ♂ hybrids was estimated, using factorial breeding plans, and monospecific control samples from each dam. Evidence was obtained of: • - sire effects bearing on eggs and alevins • - low sire × dam interaction effects • - important dam effects, some of which bear on eggs and are strongly correlated to those measured from control lots, while the other, uncorrelated effects, are observed on alevin survival. From these results it is concluded that genetic investigations of parental differences, especially maternal ones, operating on progeny survival should lead to improvement of hybridization techniques.

A mass flow analysis of the conventional double-heater false-twist process shows that the yarn thermal shrinkage over the first heater equals exactly the imposed first overfeed. A relationship is derived between the yarn " mechanical shrinkage," thermal shrinkage over the second heater, and the imposed second overfeed. Single-heater results are shown to result from a special case of the more general analysis. Some supporting experimental results are given.

Two cell lines, RW-2982 and RW-7213, have been established for the first time from the mucinous variant of human colorectal carcinoma, which is a distinctive and important subtype that has a worse prognosis than the more common nonmucogenic large bowel carcinoma. Methods of establishment and observations made during 7 and 3 years, respectively, of continuous culture are described. These cell lines required 4-9 months of adaptation to tissue culture conditions before noticeable growth occurred. Both cell lines have the following unique properties: (a) growth in vitro as delicate branching three-dimensional tumor particles within a wide gel of insoluble, often translucent mucus (proteoglycan); (b) production of large quantities of carcinoembryonic antigen; (c) ability to survive or adapt to growth in media free of serum, hormones, growth factors, and all protein; and (d) tumorigenicity in multiple sites in nude mice, including liver, with especially rapid growth in the peritoneal cavity as gelatinous material that is nonadherent and noninvasive and thus resembles pseudomyxoma peritonei. Unlike other reported colorectal cell lines, these mucus-coated particulate cell lines will not readily grow as monolayers and grow much more slowly with a doubling time of 2 weeks or more. A serially transplantable tumor from the RW-7213 surgical specimen has also been maintained in nude mice since August 8, 1984. This tumor retains properties of the original specimen. Observations made on the tumor biology of mucogenic colorectal carcinoma using these cell lines are discussed.

Investigation of end-user searching at the New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center (NYH-CUMC) revealed that 8% of the physicians surveyed were end users, 63% were interested in learning to search, and 29% were not interested. When training sessions were offered at the Burke Rehabilitation Center, an affiliated institution, 50% of the medical staff attended at least one class, but only 7% of the total staff became frequent searchers. Analysis of the precision and recall ratios of searches conducted by five end users at HYH-CUMC indicated that the best results were obtained by end users who had been taught to search by experienced librarian-searchers. The quality of end user searches did not appear to be affected by the "friendliness" of the systems used, the frequency of searching habits, or the length of time that an end user had been searching.

Two sires were selected, from each of four full-sib families, according to high (“sup”) and low (“inf”) caeca number. Pyloric caeca number, precocity and growth of offspring were studied in a factorial breeding plan of these eight sires crossbred with three dams. Compared with the progeny of sires “inf”, the progeny of sires “sup” exhibited (a) a higher caeca number, (b) slightly more precocious development (as shown by beginning of hatching, first feeding and degree of hydration during yolk resorption) and (c) a higher growth rate. Significant correlations were found, within dams, between fish length at 239 days and caeca number both within and between families of offspring. Although the physiological links between caeca number and growth are still obscure, the possibility of improving growth performance in rainbow trout by indirect selection on caeca number is discussed.

- Abstract
Objective: Black communities are increasingly concerned about psychosis, a worry echoed by provincial health-care systems across Canada. Responding to the lack of evidence on psychosis in Black communities, this scoping review examined the incidence and prevalence of psychosis, access to care (pathways to care, coercive referrals, interventions, etc.), treatments received, and stigma faced by individuals with psychosis., Method: To identify studies, a comprehensive search strategy was developed and executed in December 2021 across 10 databases, including APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, MEDLINE and Web of Science. Subject headings and keywords relating to Black communities, psychosis, health inequalities, Canada and its provinces and territories were used and combined. The scoping review was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping review (PRISMA-ScR) reporting standard., Results: A total of 15 studies met the inclusion criteria, all of them conducted in Ontario and Quebec. Results highlight different disparities in psychosis among Black communities. Compared to other Canadian ethnic groups, Black individuals are more likely to be diagnosed with psychosis. Black individuals with psychosis are more likely to have their first contact with health-care settings through emergency departments, to be referred by police and ambulance services, and to experience coercive referrals and interventions, and involuntary admission. Black individuals experience a lower quality of care and are the ethnic group most likely to disengage from treatment., Conclusion: This scoping review reveals many gaps in research, prevention, promotion and intervention on psychosis in Black individuals in Canada. Future studies should explore factors related to age, gender, social and economic factors, interpersonal, institutional and systemic racism, and psychosis-related stigma. Efforts should be directed toward developing trainings for health-care professionals and promotion and prevention programs within Black communities. Culturally adapted interventions, racially disaggregated data, and increased research funding are needed.

Background: In Canada, two of five individuals will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and one in four will die from this disease. Given the disparities observed in health research among Black individuals, we conducted a scoping review to analyze the state of cancer research in Canadian Black communities regarding prevalence, incidence, screening, mortality, and related factors to observe advances and identify gaps and disparities., Methods: A comprehensive search strategy was developed and executed in December 2021 across 10 databases (e.g., Embase). Of 3451 studies generated by the search, 19 were retained for extraction and included in this study., Results: Studies were focused on a variety of cancer types among Black individuals including anal, breast, cervical, colorectal, gastric, lung, and prostate cancers. They included data on incidence, stage of cancer at diagnosis, type of care received, diagnostic interval length, and screening. A few studies also demonstrated racial disparities among Black individuals. This research reveals disparities in screening, incidence, and quality of care among Black individuals in Canada., Conclusions: Given the gaps observed in cancer studies among Black individuals, federal and provincial governments and universities should consider creating special funds to generate research on this important health issue., Plain Language Summary: Important gaps were observed on research on cancer among Black communities in Canada. Studies included in the scoping review highlights disparities in screening, incidence, and quality of care among Black individuals in Canada., (© 2022 American Cancer Society.)

- Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted mental health, but the global evolution of mental health problems during the pandemic is unknown. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies to evaluate the global evolution of mental health problems during the pandemic., Methods: To conduct this systematic review, we searched for published articles from APA PsycInfo (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), Embase (Ovid), MEDLINE (Ovid), and Web of Science. Longitudinal (at least 2 waves during the COVID-19 pandemic) and peer-reviewed articles on mental health problems conducted as from 2020 and after were included in the current study. Of 394 eligible full texts, 64 articles were included in the analysis. We computed random effects, standardized mean differences, and log odds ratio (LOR) with 95 % CIs. The meta-analysis protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021273624)., Results: Results showed that anxiety (LOR = -0.33; 95 % CI, -0.54, -0.12) and depression symptoms (LOR = -0.12; 95 % CI, -0.21, -0.04) decreased from baseline to follow up. However, other mental health problems showed no change. Higher prevalence rates (40.9 %; 95 % CI, 16.1 %-65.8 %) of psychological distress were found in months after July 2020, respectively, while there were no significant month differences for the prevalence of other mental health problems. Higher means of anxiety (d = 3.63, 95 % CI, 1.66, 5.61), depression (d = 3.93; 95 % CI, 1.68, 6.17), and loneliness (d = 5.96; 95 % CI, 3.22, 8.70) were observed in May 2020. Higher prevalence of anxiety, depression, and PTSD and higher means of anxiety, depression and loneliness were observed in North America. The prevalence of psychological distress and insomnia was higher in Latin America and Europe, respectively., Limitations: There is a lack of longitudinal studies in some parts of the world, such as Africa, the Caribbean, India, the Middle East, in Latin America, and Asia., Conclusions: Results indicated that anxiety and depression symptoms decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic while other mental health problems showed no statistical change. The findings reveal that mental health problems peaked in April and May 2020. Prevalence of mental health problems remains high during the pandemic and mental health prevention, promotion and intervention programs should be implemented to mitigate the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global population., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
A blue variant of the rainbow trout, which appeared in a French fish farm, displayed an iridescent body color that was cobalt blue on the back, lighter on the undersides, and silvery on the belly and which held up to adult stage. This color was supposed to result from a Tyndall effect involving a structural arrangement of melanin pigments because it disappeared when it was associated with a depigmenting gene. This blue variant appeared to be governed by an autosomal recessive gene. Blue fry survival and body weight were about 25% less than those of wild-type sibs, but no major problem was observed in further breeding performances, including reproduction. These features do not correspond with those of the blue variants previously described in the rainbow trout.
